vyAsa uvAca ॥ yenaikena hi dattena sarveSAM prApyate phalam ॥ dAnAnAM tanmamAkhyA hi mAnuSANAM hitArthataH॥ 1॥
Vyāsa said:— For the benefit of human beings tell me that which when given as gift makes it possible to derive the benefit of all gifts.

sanatkumAra uvAca॥ zRNu kAleH pradattAdvai phalaM viMdaMti mAnavAH॥ ekasmAdapi sarveSAM dAnAnAM tadvadAmi te ॥ 2 ॥
Sanatkumāra said:— Listen. I shall mention that gift on giving which, at the proper time, men obtain the benefit of all the gifts.

दानानामुत्तमं दानं ब्रह्माण्डं खलु मानवैः ॥ दातव्यं मुक्तिकामैस्तु संसारोत्तारणाय वै ॥ ३ ॥
dAnAnAmuttamaM dAnaM brahmANDaM khalu mAnavaiH ॥ dAtavyaM muktikAmaistu saMsArottAraNAya vai ॥ 3 ॥
This is the most excellent of all gifts. The whole universe shall be given as gift by those who desire salvation for crossing the ocean of worldly existence.

ब्रह्मांडे सकलं दत्तं यत्फलं लभते नरः ॥ तदेकभावादाप्नोति सप्तलोकाधिपो भवेत् ॥ ४ ॥
brahmAMDe sakalaM dattaM yatphalaM labhate naraH ॥ tadekabhAvAdApnoti saptalokAdhipo bhavet ॥ 4 ॥
A man becomes the lord of the seven worlds, with a fraction of the benefit that he obtains when the whole universe is given as a gift.

यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ नभसि वै यावत्स्थिरा मेदिनी तावत्सोऽपि नरः स्वबांधवयुतस्स्ववर्गौकसामोकसि॥ सर्वेष्वेव मनोनुगेषु ककुभिर्ब्रह्माण्डदः क्रीडते पश्चाद्याति पदं सुदुर्लभतरं देवैर्मुदे माधवम् ॥ ५ ॥
yAvaccandradivAkarau nabhasi vai yAvatsthirA medinI tAvatso'pi naraH svabAMdhavayutassvavargaukasAmokasi॥ sarveSveva manonugeSu kakubhirbrahmANDadaH krIDate pazcAdyAti padaM sudurlabhataraM devairmude mAdhavam ॥ 5 ॥
The man who gifts away the universe sports in the abode of the gods along with his kinsmen as long as the moon and the sun are in the sky or the earth is steady or every one in the abode of the heaven-dwellers is favourable. Afterwards, for rejoicing, he attains the region of Viṣṇu which is difficult of access even to the gods.

व्यास उवाच ॥ भगवन्ब्रूहि ब्राह्माण्डं यत्प्रमाणं यदात्मकम् ॥ यदाधारं यथाभूतं येन मे प्रत्ययो भवेत् ॥ ६ ॥
vyAsa uvAca ॥ bhagavanbrUhi brAhmANDaM yatpramANaM yadAtmakam ॥ yadAdhAraM yathAbhUtaM yena me pratyayo bhavet ॥ 6 ॥
Vyāsa said:— O holy lord, please explain the universe, its extent, its main soul, its support and its structure so that I can have a full idea.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ मुने शृणु प्रवक्ष्यामि यदुत्सेधं तु विस्तरम् ॥ ब्रह्माण्डं तत्तु संक्षेपाच्छ्रुत्वा पापात्प्रमुच्यते ॥ ७॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ mune zRNu pravakSyAmi yadutsedhaM tu vistaram ॥ brahmANDaM tattu saMkSepAcchrutvA pApAtpramucyate ॥ 7॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O sage, listen. I shall explain how high and how extensive is the universe. On hearing it succinctly one gets rid of sins.

यत्तत्कारणमव्यक्तं व्यक्तं शिवमनामयम् ॥ तस्मात्संजायते ब्रह्मा द्विधाभूताद्धि कालतः ॥ ८॥
yattatkAraNamavyaktaM vyaktaM zivamanAmayam ॥ tasmAtsaMjAyate brahmA dvidhAbhUtAddhi kAlataH ॥ 8॥
That which is the unmanifest ultimate cause becomes manifest as Śiva, free from ailment. When that becomes dichotomised, Brahma is born of that in due course.

ब्राह्माण्डं सृजति ब्रह्मा चतुर्द्दशभवात्मकम् ॥ तद्वच्मि क्रमतस्तात समासाच्छृणु यत्नतः ॥ ९॥
brAhmANDaM sRjati brahmA caturddazabhavAtmakam ॥ tadvacmi kramatastAta samAsAcchRNu yatnataH ॥ 9॥
Brahmā creates the universe consisting of the fourteen worlds. O dear, I shall succinctly explain that in proper order. Listen to it assiduously.

पातालानि तु सप्तैव भुवनानि तथोर्द्ध्वतः ॥ उच्छ्रायो द्विगुणस्तस्य जलमध्ये स्थितस्य च ॥ १० ॥
pAtAlAni tu saptaiva bhuvanAni tathorddhvataH ॥ ucchrAyo dviguNastasya jalamadhye sthitasya ca ॥ 10 ॥
The nether worlds (pātāla) are seven only. The upper worlds are also seven (bhuvana). The height of the universe is twice as such and it stands in the middle of water.

तस्याधारः स्थितो नागस्स च विष्णुः प्रकीर्तितः ॥ ब्रह्मणो वचसो हेतोर्बिभर्ति सकलं त्विदम् ॥ ११ ॥
tasyAdhAraH sthito nAgassa ca viSNuH prakIrtitaH ॥ brahmaNo vacaso hetorbibharti sakalaM tvidam ॥ 11 ॥
Its support is the serpent Śeṣa. He is glorified as Viṣṇu. At the instance of Brahmā he supports all this.

शेषस्यास्य गुणान् वक्तुं न शक्ता देवदानवाः ॥ योनंतः पठ्यते सिद्धैर्देवर्षिगणपूजितः ॥ १२ ॥
zeSasyAsya guNAn vaktuM na zaktA devadAnavAH ॥ yonaMtaH paThyate siddhairdevarSigaNapUjitaH ॥ 12 ॥
Even the gods and the Asuras are incompetent to describe the attributes of Śeṣa who is worshipped by the gods, sages and the Gaṇas and who is called as Anante by the Siddhas.

शिरःसाहस्रयुक्तस्स सर्वा विद्योतयन्दिशः ॥ फणामणिसहस्रेण स्वस्तिकामलभूषणः ॥ १३ ॥
ziraHsAhasrayuktassa sarvA vidyotayandizaH ॥ phaNAmaNisahasreNa svastikAmalabhUSaNaH ॥ 13 ॥
He has a thousand hoods. By means of the thousand jewels on his hoods, he illuminates all the quarters. He has the brilliant ornament Svastika.

मदाघूर्णितनेत्रोऽसौ साग्निश्श्वेत इवाचलः ॥ स्रग्वी किरीटी ह्याभाति यस्सदैवैक कुंडलः ॥ १४ ॥
madAghUrNitanetro'sau sAgnizzveta ivAcalaH ॥ sragvI kirITI hyAbhAti yassadaivaika kuMDalaH ॥ 14 ॥
He has only a single ear-ring. He has a crown and wears garlands. His eyes are rolling due to inebriation. He shines like a white fiery mountain.

सायं गंगाप्रवाहेण श्वेतशैलोपशोभितः ॥ नीलवासा मदोद्रिक्तः कैलासाद्रिरिवापरः ॥ १५ ॥
sAyaM gaMgApravAheNa zvetazailopazobhitaH ॥ nIlavAsA madodriktaH kailAsAdririvAparaH ॥ 15 ॥
He is like a Kailāsa mountain which shines white due to the flow of the Gaṅgā. But he wears a blue cloth and is inebriated.

लांगलासक्तहस्ताग्रो बिभ्रन्मुसलमुत्तमम्॥ योऽर्च्यते नागकन्याभिस्स्वर्णवर्णाभिरादरात् ॥ १६॥
lAMgalAsaktahastAgro bibhranmusalamuttamam॥ yo'rcyate nAgakanyAbhissvarNavarNAbhirAdarAt ॥ 16॥
He carried an excellent club with the tip of his hand attached to a stick He is worshiped with reverence by the daughters of serpents who are of golden complexion.

संकर्षणात्मको रुद्रो विषानलशिखोज्ज्वलः ॥ कल्पांते निष्क्रमन्ते यद्वक्त्रेभ्योऽग्निशिखा मुहुः ॥ दग्ध्वा जगत्त्रयं शान्ता भवंतीत्यनुशुश्रुम ॥ १७ ॥
saMkarSaNAtmako rudro viSAnalazikhojjvalaH ॥ kalpAMte niSkramante yadvaktrebhyo'gnizikhA muhuH ॥ dagdhvA jagattrayaM zAntA bhavaMtItyanuzuzruma ॥ 17 ॥
Rudra in the form of Sankarshana is shining with the tip of a poisonous fire At the end of the kalpa flames of fire come out of his mouth again and again We have heard that after burning the three worlds they become peaceful.

आस्ते पातालमूलस्थस्स शेषः क्षितिमण्डलम् ॥ बिभ्रत्स्वपृष्ठे भूतेशश्शेषोऽशेषगुणार्चितः ॥ १८॥
Aste pAtAlamUlasthassa zeSaH kSitimaNDalam ॥ bibhratsvapRSThe bhUtezazzeSo'zeSaguNArcitaH ॥ 18॥
Holding the sphere of the earth on his back, Śeṣa, the lord of Bhūtas stands at the root of Pātāla. He is worshipped for his endless attributes.

तस्य वीर्यप्रभावश्च साकांक्षैस्त्रिदशैरपि ॥ न हि वर्णयितुं शक्यः स्वरूपं ज्ञातुमेव वा ॥ १९ ॥
tasya vIryaprabhAvazca sAkAMkSaistridazairapi ॥ na hi varNayituM zakyaH svarUpaM jJAtumeva vA ॥ 19 ॥
The power of his virility cannot be adequately described even by the ambitious gods nor can his form be known.

आस्ते कुसुममालेव फणामणिशिलारुणा ॥ यस्यैषा सकला पृथ्वी कस्तद्वीर्यं वदिष्यति ॥ २०॥
Aste kusumamAleva phaNAmaNizilAruNA ॥ yasyaiSA sakalA pRthvI kastadvIryaM vadiSyati ॥ 20॥
Who will adequately express his prowess? The series of his hoods, pink with the jewels go round the entire earth like a garland of flowers.

यदा विजृम्भतेऽनंतो मदाघूर्णितलोचनः ॥ तदा चलति भूरेषा साद्रितोयाधिकानना ॥ २१॥
yadA vijRmbhate'naMto madAghUrNitalocanaH ॥ tadA calati bhUreSA sAdritoyAdhikAnanA ॥ 21॥
With his eyes rolling due to inebriation when Śeṣa stretches himself, the earth quakes along with all its mountains, oceans and forests.

दशसाहस्रमेकैकं पातालं मुनि सत्तम ॥ अतलं वितलं चैव सुतलं च रसातलम् ॥ २२ ॥
dazasAhasramekaikaM pAtAlaM muni sattama ॥ atalaM vitalaM caiva sutalaM ca rasAtalam ॥ 22 ॥
O best of sages each of the ten thousand nether worlds Atala Vitala and Sutala and Rasatala.

तलं तलातलं चाग्र्यं पातालं सप्तमं मतम् ॥ भूमेरधस्सप्त लोका इमे ज्ञेया विचक्षणैः॥ २३॥
talaM talAtalaM cAgryaM pAtAlaM saptamaM matam ॥ bhUmeradhassapta lokA ime jJeyA vicakSaNaiH॥ 23॥
The bottom of the bottom and the top of the bottom are considered to be the seventh nether world. These seven worlds under the earth are to be known by the wise.

उच्छ्रायो द्विगुणश्चैषां सर्वेषां रत्नभूमयः ॥ रत्नवन्तोऽथ प्रासादा भूमयो हेमसंभवाः॥ २४॥
ucchrAyo dviguNazcaiSAM sarveSAM ratnabhUmayaH ॥ ratnavanto'tha prAsAdA bhUmayo hemasaMbhavAH॥ 24॥
The height of each of these is twice its extent. The surfaces of all are grounds of gems. The palaces are full of gems and their terraces are made of gold.

तेषु दानवदैतेया नागानां जातयस्तथा ॥ निवसंति महानागा राक्षसा दैत्यसंभवाः ॥ २५॥
teSu dAnavadaiteyA nAgAnAM jAtayastathA ॥ nivasaMti mahAnAgA rAkSasA daityasaMbhavAH ॥ 25॥
Dānavas, Daiteyas, Serpents, and Rākṣasas of the Daitya origin reside there.

प्राह स्वर्गसदोमध्ये पातालानीति नारदः ॥ स्वर्लोकादति रम्याणि तेभ्योऽसावागतो दिवि॥ २६॥
prAha svargasadomadhye pAtAlAnIti nAradaH ॥ svarlokAdati ramyANi tebhyo'sAvAgato divi॥ 26॥
Nārada who came to heaven from the nether region announced in the middle of the celestial assembly that the nether worlds (pātāla) are more beautiful than heaven.

नानाभूषणभूषासु मणयो यत्र सुप्रभाः ॥ आह्लादकानि शुभ्राणि पातालं केन तत्समम्॥ २७॥
nAnAbhUSaNabhUSAsu maNayo yatra suprabhAH ॥ AhlAdakAni zubhrANi pAtAlaM kena tatsamam॥ 27॥
There, in all sorts of ornaments, lustrous jewels are present. They are white and delightful. What is there equal to it?

पाताले कस्य न प्रीतिरितश्चेतश्च शोभितम् ॥ देवदानवकन्याभिर्विमुक्तस्याभिजायते ॥ २८ ॥
pAtAle kasya na prItiritazcetazca zobhitam ॥ devadAnavakanyAbhirvimuktasyAbhijAyate ॥ 28 ॥
The nether region is here and there brightened up by the daughters of Daityas and Dānavas. Even to the liberated soul, the nether region is pleasing. Which liberated soul does not like it?

दिवार्करश्मयो यत्र न भवंति विधो निशि ॥ न शीतमातपो यत्र मणितेजोऽत्र केवलम् ॥ २९ ॥
divArkarazmayo yatra na bhavaMti vidho nizi ॥ na zItamAtapo yatra maNitejo'tra kevalam ॥ 29 ॥
There during (he daytime there are no sun’s rays, nor the moon’s rays during the night. There is neither chillness nor bright sunlight. There is only the lustre of the jewels.

भक्ष्यभोज्यान्नपानानि भुज्यंते मुदितैर्भृशम् ॥ यत्र न जायते कालो गतोऽपि मुनिसत्तम ॥ ३०॥
bhakSyabhojyAnnapAnAni bhujyaMte muditairbhRzam ॥ yatra na jAyate kAlo gato'pi munisattama ॥ 30॥
O excellent sage, all sorts of foodstuffs and drinks are consumed there by extremely joyous persons. The time that passes by is not known there at all.

पुंस्कोकिलरुतं यत्र पद्मानि कमलाकराः ॥ नद्यस्सरांसि रम्याणि ह्यन्योन्यविचराणि च ॥ ३१॥
puMskokilarutaM yatra padmAni kamalAkarAH ॥ nadyassarAMsi ramyANi hyanyonyavicarANi ca ॥ 31॥
The cooings of the male cuckoo are there. Lotuses are there. There are lotus-ponds. There are rivers and lakes. Each of them is more excellent than the other.

भूषणान्यतिशुभ्राणि गंधाढ्यं चानुलेपनम् ॥ वीणावेणुमृदंगानां स्वना गेयानि च द्विज॥ ३२॥
bhUSaNAnyatizubhrANi gaMdhADhyaM cAnulepanam ॥ vINAveNumRdaMgAnAM svanA geyAni ca dvija॥ 32॥
There the ornaments are very brilliant. The unguents are sweet-smelling. O brahmin, the sound of Vīṇās, flutes and Mṛdaṅgas can be heard there. There are songs everywhere.

दैत्योरगैश्च भुज्यंते पाताले वै सुखानि च ॥ तपसा समवाप्नोति दानवैस्सिद्धमानवैः॥ ३३॥
daityoragaizca bhujyaMte pAtAle vai sukhAni ca ॥ tapasA samavApnoti dAnavaissiddhamAnavaiH॥ 33॥
There the Daityas and serpents rejoice and enjoy pleasures. It is by performing penances that Dānavas and Siddha beings attain the same.
