Vyāsa said:— O holy lord, son of Brahmā, obeisance be to you. Please describe those living beings who are engaged in sins causing their fall into great hells.

Sanatkumāra said:— I describe to you in brief the living beings who are engaged in sins that cause their fall into great hells. Listen attentively.

parastrIdravyasaMkalpazcetasA'niSTaciMtanam ॥ akAryAbhinivezazca caturddhA karma mAnasam ॥ 3 ॥
Pondering over other men’s wives and wealth, wishing for the ill of others mentally, conception of various evil actions and ardent longing for various mean acts, these are the four types of mental activity.

Unconnected jabber, untruthful utterance, displeasing words and backbiting, these are the four types of verbal activity.

abhakSyabhakSaNaM hiMsA mithyAkAryya nivezanam ॥ parasvAnAmupAdAnaM caturddhA karma kAyikam ॥ 5 ॥
Eating forbidden food, violence, wild goose chase and pilfering of other’s property, these are the four types of physical activity.

ityetadvA dazavidhaM karma proktaM trisAdhanam ॥ asya bhedAnpunarvakSye yeSAM phalamanaMtakam ॥ 6 ॥
Thus there are twelve types of activity intended to achieve three aims. I shall explain their further subdivisions, the results of which are endless and manifold.

Very great is the sin of those who hate lord Śiva who enables people to cross the ocean of worldly existence. They are sure to be immersed in the ocean of hell.

ye zivajJAnavaktAraM nindaMti ca tapasvinam ॥ gurUnpitRRnathonmattAste yAMti nirayArNavam ॥ 8॥
Those who censure the propounder of Śiva’s perfect knowledge, ascetics, preceptors or parents are mad. They fall into the ocean of hell.

zivanindA gurornindA zivajJAnasya dUSaNam ॥ devadravyApaharaNaM dvijadravyavinAzanam ॥ 9 ॥
Blasphemy against Lord Śiva is blasphemy against the spiritual master and it is a corruption of knowledge of Lord Śiva stealing the property of gods and destroying the property of brahmins.

हरंति ये च संमूढाश्शिवज्ञानस्य पुस्तकम् ॥ महांति पातकान्याहुरनन्तफलदानि षट् ॥ १०॥
haraMti ye ca saMmUDhAzzivajJAnasya pustakam ॥ mahAMti pAtakAnyAhuranantaphaladAni SaT ॥ 10॥
And those who are deluded take away the book of knowledge of Lord Śiva They say that there are six great sins that yield infinite rewards.

nAbhinandaMti ye dRSTvA zivapUjAM prakalpitAm ॥ na namaMtyarcitaM dRSTvA zivaliMgaM stuvaMti na ॥ 11 ॥
Those who do not rejoice when they see the worship of Lord Śiva arranged for them They do not bow down or praise the linga of Lord Shiva when they see it worshiped.

yatheSTaceSTA nizzaMkAssaMtiSThaMte ramaMti ca ॥ upacAravinirmuktAzzivAgre gurusannidhau ॥ 12॥
They move as they please and enjoy themselves without hesitation They were freed from treatment and stood before Lord Shiva in the presence of their spiritual master.

स्थानसंस्कारपूजां च ये न कुर्वंति पर्वसु ॥ विधिवद्वा गुरूणां च कर्म्मयोगव्यवस्थिताः ॥ १३ ॥
sthAnasaMskArapUjAM ca ye na kurvaMti parvasu ॥ vidhivadvA gurUNAM ca karmmayogavyavasthitAH ॥ 13 ॥
Those who do not perform the rituals and worship of the places on the festivals Or according to the rituals of the teachers they are established in the yoga of karma.

ये त्यजंति शिवाचारं शिवभक्तान्द्विषंति च ॥ असंपूज्य शिवज्ञानं येऽधीयंते लिखंति च ॥ १४ ॥
ye tyajaMti zivAcAraM zivabhaktAndviSaMti ca ॥ asaMpUjya zivajJAnaM ye'dhIyaMte likhaMti ca ॥ 14 ॥
Those who abandon the conduct of Lord Śiva and hate the devotees of Lord Śiva Those who study and write without worshiping the knowledge of Lord Śiva.

अन्यायतः प्रयच्छंति शृण्वन्त्युच्चारयंति च ॥ विक्रीडंति च लोभेन कुज्ञाननियमेन च ॥ १५ ॥
anyAyataH prayacchaMti zRNvantyuccArayaMti ca ॥ vikrIDaMti ca lobhena kujJAnaniyamena ca ॥ 15 ॥
They give unjustly, they hear and they utter. They play with greed and the rules of evil knowledge.

असंस्कृतप्रदेशेषु यथेष्टं स्वापयंति च ॥ शिवज्ञानकथाऽऽक्षेपं यः कृत्वान्यत्प्रभाषते ॥ १६ ॥
asaMskRtapradezeSu yatheSTaM svApayaMti ca ॥ zivajJAnakathA''kSepaM yaH kRtvAnyatprabhASate ॥ 16 ॥
They sleep as they please in uncultivated areas He who makes an objection to the story of knowledge of Lord Shiva and speaks otherwise.

न ब्रवीति च यः सत्यं न प्रदानं करोति च ॥ अशुचिर्वाऽशुचिस्थाने यः प्रवक्ति शृणोति च ॥ १७ ॥
na bravIti ca yaH satyaM na pradAnaM karoti ca ॥ azucirvA'zucisthAne yaH pravakti zRNoti ca ॥ 17 ॥
He who does not speak and does not give the truth He who speaks and hears in an unclean or unclean place.

गुरुपूजामकृत्वैव यश्शास्त्रं श्रोतुमिच्छति ॥ न करोति च शुश्रूषामाज्ञां च भक्तिभावतः ॥ १८ ॥
gurupUjAmakRtvaiva yazzAstraM zrotumicchati ॥ na karoti ca zuzrUSAmAjJAM ca bhaktibhAvataH ॥ 18 ॥
He who wishes to hear the scriptures without worshiping the spiritual master He does not perform service or commands out of devotion.

नाभिनन्दंति तद्वाक्यमुत्तरं च प्रयच्छति ॥ गुरुकर्मण्यसाध्यं यत्तदुपेक्षां करोति च ॥ १९ ॥
nAbhinandaMti tadvAkyamuttaraM ca prayacchati ॥ gurukarmaNyasAdhyaM yattadupekSAM karoti ca ॥ 19 ॥
They do not welcome him and he gives them an answer He neglects what is impossible for the teacher to do.

गुरुमार्त्तमशक्तं च विदेशं प्रस्थितं तथा ॥ वैरिभिः परिभूतं वा यस्संत्यजति पापकृत् ॥ २० ॥
gurumArttamazaktaM ca videzaM prasthitaM tathA ॥ vairibhiH paribhUtaM vA yassaMtyajati pApakRt ॥ 20 ॥
Heavy and suffering and incapable and going abroad A sinner who abandons himself or is defeated by his enemies.

तद्भार्य्यापुत्रमित्रेषु यश्चावज्ञां करोति च ॥ एवं सुवाचकस्यापि गुरोर्धर्मानुदर्शिनः ॥ २१ ॥
tadbhAryyAputramitreSu yazcAvajJAM karoti ca ॥ evaM suvAcakasyApi gurordharmAnudarzinaH ॥ 21 ॥
He who despises his wife children and friends Thus even though he was a good speaker he was a teacher who followed the path of righteousness.

एतानि खलु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मुनिसत्तम ॥ सुमहत्पातकान्याहुश्शिवनिन्दासमानि च ॥ २२ ॥
etAni khalu sarvANi karmANi munisattama ॥ sumahatpAtakAnyAhuzzivanindAsamAni ca ॥ 22 ॥
O best of sages these are indeed all the actions They say that these are very serious sins and are equal to blasphemy against Lord Śiva.

ब्रह्मघ्नश्च सुरापश्च स्तेयी च गुरुतल्पगः ॥ महापातकिनस्त्वेते तत्संयोगी च पंचमः ॥ २३॥
brahmaghnazca surApazca steyI ca gurutalpagaH ॥ mahApAtakinastvete tatsaMyogI ca paMcamaH ॥ 23॥
The murderer of a brahmin, the addict to wine, the habitual thief, the defiler of the preceptor’s bed and he who associates with these is the great sinner fifth in all.

क्रोधाल्लोभाद्भयाद्द्वेषाद्ब्राह्मणस्य वधे तु यः ॥ मर्मांतिकं महादोषमुक्त्वा स ब्रह्महा भवेत् ॥ २४॥
krodhAllobhAdbhayAddveSAdbrAhmaNasya vadhe tu yaH ॥ marmAMtikaM mahAdoSamuktvA sa brahmahA bhavet ॥ 24॥
He who kills a brahmin out of fury, greed, fear or hatred or uses heart-rending taunts becomes the slayer of a brahmin.

ब्राह्मणं यः समाहूय दत्त्वा यश्चाददाति च ॥ निर्द्दोषं दूषयेद्यस्तु स नरो ब्रह्महा भवेत् ॥ २५ ॥
brAhmaNaM yaH samAhUya dattvA yazcAdadAti ca ॥ nirddoSaM dUSayedyastu sa naro brahmahA bhavet ॥ 25 ॥
He who invite? a brahmin and makes him some gift but later on takes it back and criticises him and rebukes him without any fault is the slayer of a brahmin.

यश्च विद्याभिमानेन निस्तेजयति सुद्विजम् ॥ उदासीनं सभामध्ये ब्रह्महा स प्रकीर्तितः ॥ २६ ॥
yazca vidyAbhimAnena nistejayati sudvijam ॥ udAsInaM sabhAmadhye brahmahA sa prakIrtitaH ॥ 26 ॥
He who, being arrogant of his gift of learning, puts to shame any good brahmin keeping silence and indifferent in the assembly is also a brahmin-slayer.

मिथ्यागुणैर्य आत्मानं नयत्युत्कर्षतां बलात् ॥ गुणानपि निरुद्वास्य स च वै ब्रह्महा भवेत् ॥ २७॥
mithyAguNairya AtmAnaM nayatyutkarSatAM balAt ॥ guNAnapi nirudvAsya sa ca vai brahmahA bhavet ॥ 27॥
He who pretends to have the qualities he does not have and gains recognition for the same and he who conceals his bad attributes is a brahmin-slayer.

गवां वृषाभिभूतानां द्विजानां गुरुपूर्वकम् ॥ यस्समाचरते विप्र तमाहुर्ब्रह्मघातकम् ॥ २८॥
gavAM vRSAbhibhUtAnAM dvijAnAM gurupUrvakam ॥ yassamAcarate vipra tamAhurbrahmaghAtakam ॥ 28॥
He who hinders cows when bulls mate with them or brahmins when they seek preceptors is called a brahmin-slayer.

देवद्विजगवां भूमिं प्रदत्तां हरते तु यः ॥ प्रनष्टामपि कालेन तमाहुर्ब्रह्मघातकम् ॥ २९ ॥
devadvijagavAM bhUmiM pradattAM harate tu yaH ॥ pranaSTAmapi kAlena tamAhurbrahmaghAtakam ॥ 29 ॥
He who forcibly occupies the land given in support of the temples, brahmins or cows, though the lease might have lapsed due to efflux of time, is called a brahmin-slayer.

देवद्विजस्वहरणमन्यायेनार्जितं तु यत् ॥ ब्रह्महत्यासमं ज्ञेयं पातकं नात्र संशयः ॥ ३० ॥
devadvijasvaharaNamanyAyenArjitaM tu yat ॥ brahmahatyAsamaM jJeyaM pAtakaM nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 30 ॥
The misappropriation of the wealth of the deity or a brahmin and wealth earned through injustice js no less than the sin of slaying a brahmin undoubtedly.

अधीत्य यो द्विजो वेदं ब्रह्मज्ञानं शिवात्मकम् ॥ यदि त्यजति यो मूढः सुरापानस्य तत्समम् ॥ ३१ ॥
adhItya yo dvijo vedaM brahmajJAnaM zivAtmakam ॥ yadi tyajati yo mUDhaH surApAnasya tatsamam ॥ 31 ॥
If a brahmin learns the Vedas and acquires knowledge of Brahman and Śiva, but eschews it later on he commits a sin equal to that of drinking wine.

यत्किंचिद्धि व्रतं गृह्य नियमं यजनं तथा ॥ संत्यागः पञ्चयज्ञानां सुरापानस्य तत्समम् ॥ ३२॥
yatkiMciddhi vrataM gRhya niyamaM yajanaM tathA ॥ saMtyAgaH paJcayajJAnAM surApAnasya tatsamam ॥ 32॥
The abandonment of sacred rites, worships and the five daily sacrifices, after performing the same for some time is attended with a sin equal to that of the drinking wine.

पितृमातृपरित्यागः कूटसाक्ष्यं द्विजानृतम् ॥ आमिषं शिवभक्तानामभक्ष्यस्य च भक्षणम् ॥ ३३॥
pitRmAtRparityAgaH kUTasAkSyaM dvijAnRtam ॥ AmiSaM zivabhaktAnAmabhakSyasya ca bhakSaNam ॥ 33॥
Abandonment of parents is false testimony and a lie to the twice-born. It is the food of the devotees of Lord Śiva and the eating of what is not edible.

वने निरपराधानां प्राणिनां चापघातनम् ॥ द्विजार्थं प्रक्षिपेत्साधुर्न धर्मार्थं नियोजयेत् ॥ ३४ ॥
vane niraparAdhAnAM prANinAM cApaghAtanam ॥ dvijArthaM prakSipetsAdhurna dharmArthaM niyojayet ॥ 34 ॥
Killing innocent animals in the forest with bows A saint should throw away for the sake of a brahmin and not engage for the sake of religion.

गवां मार्गे वने ग्रामे यैश्चैवाग्निः प्रदीयते ॥ इति पापानि घोराणि ब्रह्महत्यासमानि च ॥ ३५ ॥
gavAM mArge vane grAme yaizcaivAgniH pradIyate ॥ iti pApAni ghorANi brahmahatyAsamAni ca ॥ 35 ॥
They also offer fire to the cows on the road in the forest in the village Thus the sins are terrible and equal to the murder of a brahmin.

दीनसर्वस्वहरणं नरस्त्रीगजवाजिनाम् ॥ गोभूरजतवस्त्राणामौषधीनां रसस्य च ॥ ३६॥
dInasarvasvaharaNaM narastrIgajavAjinAm ॥ gobhUrajatavastrANAmauSadhInAM rasasya ca ॥ 36॥
The abduction of all the property of the poor men women elephants and horses of cows, land, silver, clothes, herbs and juice.

चन्दनागरुकर्पूरकस्तूरीपट्टवाससाम्॥ विक्रयस्त्वविपत्तौ यः कृतो ज्ञानाद् द्विजातिभिः ॥ ३७ ॥
candanAgarukarpUrakastUrIpaTTavAsasAm॥ vikrayastvavipattau yaH kRto jJAnAd dvijAtibhiH ॥ 37 ॥
sandalwood, agaru, camphor, musk, and clothes. A sale made by the brahmins out of knowledge in times of distress.

हस्तन्यासापहरणं रुक्मस्तेयसमं स्मृतम् ॥ कन्यानां वरयोग्यानामदानं सदृशे वरे ॥ ३८॥
hastanyAsApaharaNaM rukmasteyasamaM smRtam ॥ kanyAnAM varayogyAnAmadAnaM sadRze vare ॥ 38॥
Stealing from a hand is considered to be equal to stealing gold Giving away daughters worthy of a husband to a suitable husband.

पुत्रमित्रकलत्रेषु गमनं भगिनीषु च ॥ कुमारीसाहसं घोरमद्यपस्त्रीनिषेवणम् ॥ ३९ ॥
putramitrakalatreSu gamanaM bhaginISu ca ॥ kumArIsAhasaM ghoramadyapastrIniSevaNam ॥ 39 ॥
Visiting sons friends wives and sisters The audacity of a maiden is terrible and the service of a drunken woman.

सवर्णायाश्च गमनं गुरुभार्य्यासमं स्मृतम् ॥ महापापानि चोक्तानि शृणु त्वमुपपातकम् ॥ ४०॥
savarNAyAzca gamanaM gurubhAryyAsamaM smRtam ॥ mahApApAni coktAni zRNu tvamupapAtakam ॥ 40॥
It is considered equal to the wife of a preceptor to go to a woman of the same caste I have also described the great sins and hear the consequences.
