nandIzvara uvAca ॥ zRNu prAjJa kirAtAkhyamavatArampinAkinaH ॥ mUkaM ca hatavAnprIto yo'rjunAya varandadau ॥ 1॥
Nandīśvara said:— O intelligent one, listen to the incarnation of the Pināka-bearing lord Śiva as Kirāta who killed Mūka and delightedly granted the boon to Arjuna.

suyodhanajitAste vai pANDavAH pravarAzca te॥ draupadyA ca tayA sAdhvyA dvaitAkhyaM vanamAyayuH ॥ 2 ॥
Defeated by Suyodhana, the excellent Pāṇḍavas went to the forest Dvaita accompanied by their chaste wife Draupadī.

tatraiva sUryyadattAM vai sthAlIM cAzritya te tadA ॥ kAlaM ca vAhayAmAsussukhena kila pANDavAH ॥ 3 ॥
Depending upon the cooking-pot given by the sun, the Pāṇḍavas spent their time happily.

chalArthaM preritastena durvAsA munipuGgavaH ॥ suyodhanena viprendra pANDavAntikamAdarAt ॥ 4 ॥
O leading brahmin, Durvāsas the leading sage was induced by Suyodhana to go to the Pāṇḍavas in order to deceive them.

chAtraiH svairvAyutaissArddhaM yayAce tatra tAnmudA ॥ bhojyaM cittepsitaM vai sa tebhyazcaiva samAgataH ॥ 5॥
Accompanied by his ten thousand disciples he approached them and asked for foodstuffs and other things for his disciples.

svIkRtya pANDavaistaistaiH snAnArthaM preSitAstadA ॥ durvAsaHpramukhAzcaiva munayazca tapasvinaH ॥ 6॥
After accepting it, Durvāsas and other sages and saints were sent by the Pāṇḍavas for their ablution.

atha te pANDavAH sarve annAbhAvAnmunIzvara ॥ duHkhitAzca tadA prANAMstyaktuM citte samAdadhuH ॥ 7॥
O great sage, by want of food, all the Pāṇḍavas were sad and resolved to cast off their lives.

द्रौपद्या च स्मृतः कृष्ण आगतस्तत्क्षणादपि ॥ शाकं च भक्षयित्वा तु तेषां तृप्तिं समादधत्॥ ८॥
draupadyA ca smRtaH kRSNa AgatastatkSaNAdapi ॥ zAkaM ca bhakSayitvA tu teSAM tRptiM samAdadhat॥ 8॥
Kṛṣṇa appeared on being remembered by Draupadī Draupadī. After eating a bit of vegetable he made them satiated at the very moment.

दुर्वासाश्च तदा शिष्यांस्तृप्ताञ्ज्ञात्वा ययौ पुनः ॥ पाण्डवाः कृच्छ्रनिर्मुक्ताः कृष्णस्य कृपया तदा ॥ ९॥
durvAsAzca tadA ziSyAMstRptAJjJAtvA yayau punaH ॥ pANDavAH kRcchranirmuktAH kRSNasya kRpayA tadA ॥ 9॥
On coming to know that the disciples were fully satisfied Durvāsas went away. By the grace of Kṛṣṇa, the Pāṇḍavas were freed from a difficult situation.

अथ ते पाण्डवाः कृष्णं पप्रच्छुः किम्भविष्यति ॥ बलवाञ्छत्रुरुत्पन्नः किं कार्य्यन्तद्वद प्रभो ॥ १०॥
atha te pANDavAH kRSNaM papracchuH kimbhaviSyati ॥ balavAJchatrurutpannaH kiM kAryyantadvada prabho ॥ 10॥
Then they asked Kṛṣṇa “O lord, what will happen now? A very powerful enemy has arisen. What shall be done at this moment.”

Nandīśvara. said:— O sage, on being asked thus by the Pāṇḍavas, lord Kṛṣṇa remembered the lotus-like feet of Śiva and spoke to them.

zrIkRSNa uvAca ॥ zrUyatAM pANDavAH zreSThAH zrutvA kartavyameva hi ॥ madvRttAntaM vizeSeNa zivasevAsamanvitam ॥ 12॥
Lord Kṛṣṇa said:— O excellent Pāṇḍavas, now listen to the details of my experience involving service to Śiva. After hearing you shall act accordingly.

द्वारकां च मया गत्वा शत्रूणां विजिगीषया॥ विचार्य्य चोपदेशांश्च उपमन्योर्महात्मनः ॥ १३ ॥
dvArakAM ca mayA gatvA zatrUNAM vijigISayA॥ vicAryya copadezAMzca upamanyormahAtmanaH ॥ 13 ॥
I also went to Dwarka with the intention of conquering the enemies Considering the advice of the great sage Upamanyu.

मया ह्याराधितः शम्भुः प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः ॥ बटुके पर्वतश्रेष्ठे सप्तमासं सुसेवितः ॥ १४ ॥
mayA hyArAdhitaH zambhuH prasannaH paramezvaraH ॥ baTuke parvatazreSThe saptamAsaM susevitaH ॥ 14 ॥
I have worshiped Lord Śambhu who is pleased with me He was well served for seven months in a wallet on the best of mountains.

इष्टान्कामानदान्मह्यं विश्वेशश्च स्वयं स्थितः ॥ तत्प्रभावान्मया सर्वसामर्थ्यं लब्धमुत्तमम् ॥ १५॥
iSTAnkAmAnadAnmahyaM vizvezazca svayaM sthitaH ॥ tatprabhAvAnmayA sarvasAmarthyaM labdhamuttamam ॥ 15॥
Standing there himself he fulfilled all my desires. By his power I acquired excellent efficiency in everything.

इदानीं सेव्यते देवो भुक्तिमुक्ति फलप्रदः ॥ यूयं सेवत तं शम्भुमपि सर्वसुखावहम् ॥ १६॥
idAnIM sevyate devo bhuktimukti phalapradaH ॥ yUyaM sevata taM zambhumapi sarvasukhAvaham ॥ 16॥
The lord, the bestower of worldly pleasures and salvation is propitiated by me even now. You too serve Śiva who is the bestower of happiness to all.

नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वान्तर्दधे कृष्ण आश्वास्याथ च पाण्डवान् ॥ द्वारकामगमच्छीघ्रं स्मरच्छिवपदाम्बुजम् ॥ १७ ॥
nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityuktvAntardadhe kRSNa AzvAsyAtha ca pANDavAn ॥ dvArakAmagamacchIghraM smaracchivapadAmbujam ॥ 17 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— After saying thus and cheering the Pāṇḍavas, Kṛṣna vanished from there and remembering the lotus feet of Śiva he hastened to Dvārakā.

पाण्डवा अथ भिल्लं च प्रेषयामासुरोजसा ॥ गुणानां च परीक्षार्थं तस्य दुर्योधनस्य च॥ १८ ॥
pANDavA atha bhillaM ca preSayAmAsurojasA ॥ guNAnAM ca parIkSArthaM tasya duryodhanasya ca॥ 18 ॥
Pāṇḍavas then sent a Bhilla to test the virtues and the strength of Duryodhana.

सोपि सर्वं च तत्रत्यन्दुर्योधनगुणोदयम् ॥ समीचीनं च तज्ज्ञात्वापुनः प्राप प्रभून्प्रति॥ १९ ॥
sopi sarvaM ca tatratyanduryodhanaguNodayam ॥ samIcInaM ca tajjJAtvApunaH prApa prabhUnprati॥ 19 ॥
He understood the prosperity, rise and the virtues of Duryodhana and returned to the Pāṇḍavas again.

तदुक्तन्ते निशम्यैवं दुखम्प्रापुर्मुनीश्वर ॥ परस्परं समूचुस्ते पाण्डवा अतिदुःखिताः ॥ २०॥
taduktante nizamyaivaM dukhamprApurmunIzvara ॥ parasparaM samUcuste pANDavA atiduHkhitAH ॥ 20॥
On hearing what he had said, O great sāge, the Pāṇḍavas were very sad and in their distress spoke to one another.

किङ्कर्तव्यं क्व गन्तव्यमस्माभिरधुना युधि॥ समर्था अपि वै सर्वे सत्यपाशेन यन्त्रिताः ॥ २१॥
kiGkartavyaM kva gantavyamasmAbhiradhunA yudhi॥ samarthA api vai sarve satyapAzena yantritAH ॥ 21॥
What shall be done now? Where shall we go? Though we can fight now we have been restrained by the bonds of truth.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ etasminsamaye vyAso bhasmabhUSitamastakaH ॥ rudrAkSAbharaNazcAyAjjaTAjUTavibhUSitaH ॥ 22॥
Nandīśvara said:— In the meantime Vyāsa came there with the ashes decorating his forehead, with Rudrākṣa as an ornament and well bedecked in matted hair.

पञ्चाक्षरं जपन्मंत्रं शिवप्रेमसमाकुलः ॥ तेजसां च स्वयंराशिस्साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः ॥ २३॥
paJcAkSaraM japanmaMtraM zivapremasamAkulaH ॥ tejasAM ca svayaMrAzissAkSAddharma ivAparaH ॥ 23॥
He was repeating the five-syllabled mantra. He was fully engrossed in the love of Śiva. He was a heap of lustrous brilliance, a manifestation of virtue itself.

तन्दृष्ट्वा ते तदा प्रीता उत्थाय पुरतः स्थिताः ॥ दत्त्वासनं तदा तस्मै कुशाजिनसुशोभितम् ॥ २४॥
tandRSTvA te tadA prItA utthAya purataH sthitAH ॥ dattvAsanaM tadA tasmai kuzAjinasuzobhitam ॥ 24॥
When they saw him they were delighted and they stood up to welcome him. Offering him a seat of deer-hide brightened by Kuśa grass they waited in front of him.

तत्रोपविष्टं तं व्यासं पूजयन्ति स्म हर्षिताः॥ स्तुतिं च विविधां कृत्वा धन्याः स्म इति वादिनः ॥ २५ ॥
tatropaviSTaM taM vyAsaM pUjayanti sma harSitAH॥ stutiM ca vividhAM kRtvA dhanyAH sma iti vAdinaH ॥ 25 ॥
When he was duly seated they honoured him with great delight after eulogising him in various ways and saying “Ah! we are blessed”.

तपश्चैव सुसन्तप्तं दानानि विविधानि च ॥ तत्सर्वं सफलं जातं तृप्तास्ते दर्शनात्प्रभो ॥ २६॥
tapazcaiva susantaptaM dAnAni vividhAni ca ॥ tatsarvaM saphalaM jAtaM tRptAste darzanAtprabho ॥ 26॥
“O holy lord, by seeing you, we are all satisfied. We have attained the fruits of our austerities and our diverse charitable gifts.

दुःखं च दूरतो जातन्दर्शनात्ते पितामह ॥ दुष्टैश्चैव महादुःखं दत्तं नः क्रूरकर्मभिः ॥ २७ ॥
duHkhaM ca dUrato jAtandarzanAtte pitAmaha ॥ duSTaizcaiva mahAduHkhaM dattaM naH krUrakarmabhiH ॥ 27 ॥
O grandfather, by seeing you, all our misery has disappeared, the misery that had been inflicted on us by the wicked people of ruthless activities.

श्रीमतान्दर्शने जाते दुःखं चैव गमिष्यति ॥ कदाचिन्न गतं तत्र निश्चयोयं विचारितः ॥ २८ ॥
zrImatAndarzane jAte duHkhaM caiva gamiSyati ॥ kadAcinna gataM tatra nizcayoyaM vicAritaH ॥ 28 ॥
Misery disappears at your sight. Was there ever a time when it did not disappear? We know it truly.

महतामाश्रमे प्राप्ते समर्थे सर्वकर्मणि ॥ यदि दुःखं न गच्छेतु दैवमेवात्र कारणम्॥ २९ ॥
mahatAmAzrame prApte samarthe sarvakarmaNi ॥ yadi duHkhaM na gacchetu daivamevAtra kAraNam॥ 29 ॥
When a person reaches the hermitage of a sage efficient in all activities, if misery is not dispelled, fate alone is the cause there.

निश्चयेनैव गच्छेतु दारिद्यं दुःखकारणम् ॥ महतां च स्वभावोयं कल्पवृक्षसमो मतः ॥ ३० ॥
nizcayenaiva gacchetu dAridyaM duHkhakAraNam ॥ mahatAM ca svabhAvoyaM kalpavRkSasamo mataH ॥ 30 ॥
Poverty, the cause of misery, will surely be dispelled. Such is the nature of great men. In the fulfilment of desires they are equal to the wish-yielding Kalpa tree.

तद्गुणानेव गणयेन्महतो वस्तुमात्रतः ॥ आश्रयस्य वशादेव पुंसो वै जायते प्रभो ॥ ३१॥
tadguNAneva gaNayenmahato vastumAtrataH ॥ Azrayasya vazAdeva puMso vai jAyate prabho ॥ 31॥
Thus the qualities of the great shall be observed objectively. A person becomes famous by merely resorting to them.

लघुत्वं च महत्त्वं च नात्र कार्य्या विचारणा ॥ उत्तमानां स्वभावोयं यद्दीनप्रतिपालनम् ॥ ३२ ॥
laghutvaM ca mahattvaM ca nAtra kAryyA vicAraNA ॥ uttamAnAM svabhAvoyaM yaddInapratipAlanam ॥ 32 ॥
The difference between the small and the great shall not be thought of. This is the nature of the great that they will always protect the distressed.

रंकस्य लक्षणं लोके ह्यतिश्रेयस्करं मतम् ॥ पुरोऽस्य परयत्नो वै सुजनानां च सेवनम् ॥ ३३ ॥
raMkasya lakSaNaM loke hyatizreyaskaraM matam ॥ puro'sya parayatno vai sujanAnAM ca sevanam ॥ 33 ॥
The characteristics of the wretched and the miserable are conducive to his glory, for there lies before him an opportunity for strenuous efforts and for serving the good people.

अतः परं च भाग्यं वै दोषश्चैव न दीयताम् ॥ एतस्मात्कारणात्स्वामिंस्त्वयि दृष्टो शुभन्तदा ॥ ३४ ॥
ataH paraM ca bhAgyaM vai doSazcaiva na dIyatAm ॥ etasmAtkAraNAtsvAmiMstvayi dRSTo zubhantadA ॥ 34 ॥
Thereafter it is one’s own destiny. No one is to blame for it. Hence O lord, when you are seen, everything auspicious takes place.

त्वदागमनमात्रेण सन्तुष्टानि मनांसि नः ॥ दिशोपदेशं येनाशु दुःखं नष्टम्भवेच्च नः ॥ ३५॥
tvadAgamanamAtreNa santuSTAni manAMsi naH ॥ dizopadezaM yenAzu duHkhaM naSTambhavecca naH ॥ 35॥
By your mere arrival our minds are satisfied. Give us instructions whereby our misery can be dispelled.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityetadvacanaM zrutvA pANDavAnAM mahAmuniH ॥ prasannamAnaso bhUtvA vyAsazcaivAbravIdidam ॥ 36 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— On hearing the words of the Pāṇḍavas the great sage Vyāsa was delighted in the mind and said thus.

हे पाण्डवाश्च यूयं वै न कष्टं कर्तुमर्हथ ॥ धन्याः स्थ कृतकृत्याः स्थ सत्यं नैव विलोपितम्॥ ३७॥
he pANDavAzca yUyaM vai na kaSTaM kartumarhatha ॥ dhanyAH stha kRtakRtyAH stha satyaM naiva vilopitam॥ 37॥
O Pāṇḍavas, you need not be over-anxious. You are all blessed and contented. You have not let truth slip by.

सुजनानां स्वभावोयं प्राणान्तेऽपि सुशोभनः ॥ धर्मं त्यजन्ति नैवात्र सत्यं सफलभाजनम् ॥ ३८ ॥
sujanAnAM svabhAvoyaM prANAnte'pi suzobhanaH ॥ dharmaM tyajanti naivAtra satyaM saphalabhAjanam ॥ 38 ॥
The noble nature of the good remains unchanged even at death. They do not forsake virtue. They fruitfully resort to Truth.

अस्माकं चैव यूयं च ते चापि समताङ्गताः ॥ तथापि पक्षपातो वै धर्मिष्ठानां मतो बुधैः ॥ ३९ ॥
asmAkaM caiva yUyaM ca te cApi samatAGgatAH ॥ tathApi pakSapAto vai dharmiSThAnAM mato budhaiH ॥ 39 ॥
As far as we are concerned, you and the Kauravas ought to be equal. Still our partiality is towards the virtuous. This partiality is approved by the learned.

dhRtarASTrena duSTena prathamaM ca hyacakSuSA ॥ dharmastyaktaH svayaM lobhAdyuSmAkaM rAjyamAhRtam ॥ 40॥
Virtue was at the outset abandoned by the wicked and blind Dhṛtarāṣṭra due to greed. Your kingdom was seized.

The Pāṇḍavas said:— O lord, I have mentioned the truth. Even in the forest misery is being inflicted on us incessantly by the wicked and the evil-minded Kauravas again and again.

O holy lord, please dispel our distress. Something auspicious shall be bestowed upon us. We have been advised by Kṛṣṇa that Śiva shall be propitiated always.

Let him be served by you with pleasure. Unequalled happiness shall always follow. It is only by not serving Śiva that miseries crop up.

brahmAditriparArddhAntaM yatkiMciddRzyate jagat ॥ tatsarvaM zivarUpaM ca pUjyandhyeyaM ca tatpunaH ॥ 56 ॥
Whatever is seen in the universe, beginning with Brahma and ending with the three and a half. That whole form of Lord Shiva should be worshiped and meditated upon again.

Śiva, the dispeller of all misery shall be served by all. Due to devotion, Śiva becomes pleased in a short time.

It is certain that the delighted Śiva bestows everything on his devotees. He gives worldly pleasures here and salvation hereafter.

Hence Śiva shall be always served by those who desire the fruits of worldly pleasures here and salvation hereafter. Śiva, the divine Puruṣa himself, is the slayer of the wicked and the goal of the good.

But one shall repeat the lore of Indra at the outset with steady mind. For a Kṣatriya of great lustre this alone is conducive to welfare.

Hence let Arjuna repeat the lore of Indra at first, steadily. In the beginning the lord will test him and will like to be satisfied with the test.

If he is delighted he will remove all obstacles. The lore will yield the granting of the boon by Śiva.

Nandīśvara said:— After saying this he called Arjuna and instructed him in the lore of Indra. Arjuna had his ceremonial bath and facing the east, he, of powerful intellect, received the lore.

Vyāsa said:— O Arjuna, start from here and go this way to the beautiful mountain Indrakīla. There standing beside the river Gaṅgā perform the penance well.

The invisible lore will be beneficial to you. He gave him the blessings thus. The sage then spoke to all.

May all the excellent kings stand by virtue. The result will be excellent in every respect. No doubt need be entertained in this respect.

Nandīśvara said:— Blessing the Pāṇḍavas thus and remembering the lotus-like feet of Śiva, the great sage Vyāsa vanished in a moment.
