nandIzvara uvAca ॥ zRNu prAjJa pravakSyAmi zivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ avatAraM purAnandaM yAtinAthAhvayaM mune ॥ 1॥
Nandīśvara said:— O intelligent sage, listen. I shall explain the incarnation of great bliss named Yatinātha, of Śiva the supreme soul.

अर्बुदाचलसंज्ञे तु पर्वते भिल्लवंशजः ॥ आहुकश्च तदभ्याशे वसतिस्म मुनीश्वर ॥ २ ॥
arbudAcalasaMjJe tu parvate bhillavaMzajaH ॥ Ahukazca tadabhyAze vasatisma munIzvara ॥ 2 ॥
O great sage, on the mountain Arbuda there lived a hunter Āhuka of Bhilla tribe.

tatpatnI hyAhukA nAma babhUva kila suvratA ॥ ubhAvapi mahAzaivAvAstAntau zivapUjakau ॥ 3॥
His wife Āhukā observed some good rites. Both of them were great devotees of Śiva and worshipped Śiva.

कस्मिंश्चित्समये भिल्लः शिवभक्तिरतः सदा ॥ आहारार्थं स्वपत्न्याश्च सुदूरं स गतो मुने ॥ ४॥
kasmiMzcitsamaye bhillaH zivabhaktirataH sadA ॥ AhArArthaM svapatnyAzca sudUraM sa gato mune ॥ 4॥
O sage, once this Bhilla who was always devoted to Śiva went far into the forest for fetching food for his wife.

In. the meantime towards the evening, Śiva assumed the guise of an ascetic and came to his house to test him

tasminnavasare tatrAjagAma sa gRhAdhipaH ॥ pUjanaM ca yatIzasya cakAra premataH sudhIH ॥ 6॥
The lord of the house that intelligent man too came back then and lovingly worshipped the leading ascetic.

तद्भावस्य परीक्षार्थं यतिरूपस्स शंकरः॥ महालीलातरः प्रीत्या भीतं प्रोवाच दीनगीः ॥ ७॥
tadbhAvasya parIkSArthaM yatirUpassa zaMkaraH॥ mahAlIlAtaraH prItyA bhItaM provAca dInagIH ॥ 7॥
In order to test his feelings, Śiva in the guise of an ascetic, indulging in great sports lovingly said to him in a piteous tone.

यतिनाथ उवाच ॥ अद्य स्थलं निवासार्थं देहि मे प्रातरेव हि ॥ यास्यामि सर्वथा भिल्ल स्वस्ति स्यात्तव सर्वदा ॥ ८॥
yatinAtha uvAca ॥ adya sthalaM nivAsArthaM dehi me prAtareva hi ॥ yAsyAmi sarvathA bhilla svasti syAttava sarvadA ॥ 8॥
Yatinātha said:— O Bhilla, give me some place here to stay today. I shall by all means leave in the next morning, you will be blessed for ever.

भिल्ल उवाच ॥ त्यम्प्रोक्तं त्वया स्वामिञ्शृणु मद्वचनं च ते ॥ अति स्वल्पं स्थलं मे हि स्यान्निवासः कथन्तव॥ ९॥
bhilla uvAca ॥ tyamproktaM tvayA svAmiJzRNu madvacanaM ca te ॥ ati svalpaM sthalaM me hi syAnnivAsaH kathantava॥ 9॥
Bhilla said:— O lord, what you say is true. But please listen to me. The room is not spacious enough to hold us all together.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityuktassa yatistena gamanAya matindadhe ॥ tAvadbhillyA vacaH proktaM svAminaM saMvicAryya vai ॥ 10॥
Nandīśvara said:— Thus addressed, the ascetic wanted to leave. By that time, considering the trend of thought of her husband the Bhillī said.

भिल्ल्युवाच॥ स्वामिन्देहि यतेःस्थानं विमुखं कुरु मातिथिम् ॥ गृहधर्मं विचार्य्य त्वमन्यथा धर्मसंक्षयः ॥ ११ ॥
bhillyuvAca॥ svAmindehi yateHsthAnaM vimukhaM kuru mAtithim ॥ gRhadharmaM vicAryya tvamanyathA dharmasaMkSayaH ॥ 11 ॥
Bhillyuvach. O lord give me a place for the saint and turn my guest away Consider the duties of the household otherwise you will be destroyed.

स्थीयतान्ते गृहाभ्यंतः सुखेन यतिना सह ॥ अहं बहिः स्थितिं कुर्य्यामायुधानि बृहन्त्यपि॥ १२॥
sthIyatAnte gRhAbhyaMtaH sukhena yatinA saha ॥ ahaM bahiH sthitiM kuryyAmAyudhAni bRhantyapi॥ 12॥
You stay in the house along with the ascetic. I shall remain outside with immense weapons.

nandIzvara uvAca॥ tasyAstadvacanaM zrutvA bhillyA dharmAnvitaM zivam ॥ svapatnyA manasA tena bhillena ca vicAritam ॥ 13॥
Nandīśvara said:— On hearing the virtuous and auspicious words of his wife, the Bhilla thought thus.

स्त्रियं बहिश्च निष्कास्य कथं स्थेयं मया बहे ॥ यतेरन्यत्र गमनमधर्म्मकरमात्मनः ॥ १४ ॥
striyaM bahizca niSkAsya kathaM stheyaM mayA bahe ॥ yateranyatra gamanamadharmmakaramAtmanaH ॥ 14 ॥
“How can I stay in the house after keeping my wife out. It will be sinful on my part if the ascetic goes elsewhere.

द्वयमप्युचितं नैव सर्वथा गृहमेधिनः ॥ यद्भावि तद्भवेदेव मया स्थेयं गृहाद्बहिः ॥ १५॥
dvayamapyucitaM naiva sarvathA gRhamedhinaH ॥ yadbhAvi tadbhavedeva mayA stheyaM gRhAdbahiH ॥ 15॥
Neither of the two courses is proper for a householder. What is destined to happen will surely happen. I shall stay outside.”

इत्याग्रहन्तदा कृत्वा गृहान्तः स्थाय तौ मुदा ॥ स्वायुधानि च संस्थाप्य भिल्लोऽतिष्ठद्गृहाद्बहिः ॥ १६ ॥
ityAgrahantadA kRtvA gRhAntaH sthAya tau mudA ॥ svAyudhAni ca saMsthApya bhillo'tiSThadgRhAdbahiH ॥ 16 ॥
After thinking thus and insisting on it, he kept both of them within the house joyously, himself stayed outside the house keeping all the weapons beside him.

रात्रौ तम्पशवः क्रूरा हिंसकाः समपीडयन् ॥ तेनापि च यथाशक्ति कृतो यत्नो महांस्तदा ॥ १७॥
rAtrau tampazavaH krUrA hiMsakAH samapIDayan ॥ tenApi ca yathAzakti kRto yatno mahAMstadA ॥ 17॥
During the night the cruel beasts of prey tormented him. He too strenuously withstood them to the extent of his ability.

एवं यत्नं प्रकुर्वाण स भिल्लो बलवानपि ॥ प्रारब्धात्प्रेरितैर्हिंस्रैर्बलादासीच्च भक्षितः ॥ १८॥
evaM yatnaM prakurvANa sa bhillo balavAnapi ॥ prArabdhAtpreritairhiMsrairbalAdAsIcca bhakSitaH ॥ 18॥
Thus fighting strenuously and although very strong, the Bhilla was devoured by the beasts of prey which seized him forcibly, as though indeed by his own adverse fate.

प्रातरुत्थाय स यतिर्दृष्ट्वा हिंस्रैश्च भक्षितम् ॥ भिल्लं वने चरंतं वै दुःखितोऽभूदतीव हि॥ १९॥
prAtarutthAya sa yatirdRSTvA hiMsraizca bhakSitam ॥ bhillaM vane caraMtaM vai duHkhito'bhUdatIva hi॥ 19॥
Getting up in the morning the ascetic saw the Bhilla of the forest devoured by the beasts of prey. He felt much dejected at it.

दुखितं तं यतिन्दृष्ट्वा भिल्ली सा दुःखितापि हि ॥ धैर्यात्स्वदुःखं संहृत्य वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥ २० ॥
dukhitaM taM yatindRSTvA bhillI sA duHkhitApi hi ॥ dhairyAtsvaduHkhaM saMhRtya vacanaM cedamabravIt ॥ 20 ॥
Although the Bhilli too was distressed, she suppressed her sorrow on seeing the ascetic miserable and spoke thus.

भिल्ल्युवाच ॥ किमर्थं क्रियते दुःखं भद्रं जातं यतेऽधुना ॥ धन्योयं कृतकृत्यश्च यज्जातो मृत्युरीदृशः ॥ २१ ॥
bhillyuvAca ॥ kimarthaM kriyate duHkhaM bhadraM jAtaM yate'dhunA ॥ dhanyoyaM kRtakRtyazca yajjAto mRtyurIdRzaH ॥ 21 ॥
Bhilli said:— O ascetic, why are you sorry? What has happened is for good. Blessed and contented is he since the death has happened in this manner.

अहं चैनं गमिष्यामि भस्म भूत्वानले यते ॥ चितां कारय सुप्रीत्या स्त्रीणां धर्मः सनातनः ॥ २२ ॥
ahaM cainaM gamiSyAmi bhasma bhUtvAnale yate ॥ citAM kAraya suprItyA strINAM dharmaH sanAtanaH ॥ 22 ॥
O ascetic, reducing myself to ashes, I too shall follow him. Be pleased to arrange for the pyre. This is the eternal duty of women.

इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा हितं मत्वा स्वयं यतिः ॥ चितां व्यरचयत्सा हि प्रविवेश स्वधर्मतः ॥ २३ ॥
iti tadvacanaM zrutvA hitaM matvA svayaM yatiH ॥ citAM vyaracayatsA hi praviveza svadharmataH ॥ 23 ॥
On hearing her words which he thought to be proper, the ascetic arranged the pyre. She entered the pyre dutifully.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे साक्षात्पुरः प्रादुरभूच्छिवः ॥ धन्ये धन्ये इति प्रीत्या प्रशंसस्तां हरोऽब्रवीत् ॥ २४ ॥
etasminnantare sAkSAtpuraH prAdurabhUcchivaH ॥ dhanye dhanye iti prItyA prazaMsastAM haro'bravIt ॥ 24 ॥
In the meantime Śiva himself appeared before her and spoke praising her lovingly “O blessed lady, O blessed lady.”

हर उवाच ॥ वरं ब्रूहि प्रसन्नोस्मि त्वदाचरणतोऽनघे ॥ तवादेयं न वै किंचिद्वश्योऽहं ते विशेषतः ॥ २५॥
hara uvAca ॥ varaM brUhi prasannosmi tvadAcaraNato'naghe ॥ tavAdeyaM na vai kiMcidvazyo'haM te vizeSataH ॥ 25॥
Śiva said:— O sinless lady, mention the boon you wish to have. I am pleased with your conduct. There is nothing which cannot be granted to you. I am utterly subservient to you.

नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ तच्छुत्वा शम्भुवचनं परमानन्ददायकम् ॥ सुखं प्राप्तं विशेषेण न किंचित्स्मरणं ययौ॥ २६॥
nandIzvara uvAca ॥ tacchutvA zambhuvacanaM paramAnandadAyakam ॥ sukhaM prAptaM vizeSeNa na kiMcitsmaraNaM yayau॥ 26॥
Nandīśvara said:— On hearing the words of Śiva yielding the greatest bliss she felt the highest pleasure. She did not remember anything.

तस्यास्तद्गतिमालक्ष्य सुप्रसन्नो हरोऽभवत् ॥ उवाच च पुनः शम्भुर्वरं ब्रूहीति ताम्प्रभुः ॥ २७॥
tasyAstadgatimAlakSya suprasanno haro'bhavat ॥ uvAca ca punaH zambhurvaraM brUhIti tAmprabhuH ॥ 27॥
On seeing her in that state, Śiva was much delighted. He asked her again to mention the boon she wished to have.

शिव उवाच ॥ अयं यतिश्च मद्रूपो हंसरूपो भविष्यति ॥ परजन्मनि वां प्रीत्या संयोग कारयिष्यति ॥ २८ ।
ziva uvAca ॥ ayaM yatizca madrUpo haMsarUpo bhaviSyati ॥ parajanmani vAM prItyA saMyoga kArayiSyati ॥ 28 ।
Śiva said:— This ascetic who is in my own form will assume the form of a swan in the next birth. He will lovingly unite both of you.

भिल्लश्च वीरसेनस्य नैषधे नगरे वरे ॥ महान्पुत्रो नलो नाम भविष्यति न संशयः ॥ २९ ॥
bhillazca vIrasenasya naiSadhe nagare vare ॥ mahAnputro nalo nAma bhaviSyati na saMzayaH ॥ 29 ॥
This Bhilla will be born as Nala, the son of Vīrasena, in the excellent city of Niṣadha. There is no doubt in this.

त्वं सुता भीमराजस्य वैदर्भे नगरेऽनघे॥ दमयन्ती च विख्याता भविष्यसि गुणान्विता ॥ ३० ॥
tvaM sutA bhImarAjasya vaidarbhe nagare'naghe॥ damayantI ca vikhyAtA bhaviSyasi guNAnvitA ॥ 30 ॥
You will be born in the illustrious city of Vidarbha as the daughter of king Bhīma. You will be famous as Damayantī endowed with all good qualities.

युवां चोभौ मिलित्वा च राजभोगं सुविस्तरम् ॥ भुक्त्वा मुक्तिं च योगीन्द्रेर्लप्स्येथे दुर्लभां ध्रुवम् ॥ ३१ ॥
yuvAM cobhau militvA ca rAjabhogaM suvistaram ॥ bhuktvA muktiM ca yogIndrerlapsyethe durlabhAM dhruvam ॥ 31 ॥
After coming together you will enjoy royal pleasures. You will attain salvation too, inaccessible even to leading Yogins.

नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा च स्वयं शम्भुर्लिङ्गरूपोऽभवत्तदा ॥ तस्मान्न चलितो धर्मादचलेश इति स्मृतः ॥ ३२ ॥
nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityuktvA ca svayaM zambhurliGgarUpo'bhavattadA ॥ tasmAnna calito dharmAdacaleza iti smRtaH ॥ 32 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— After saying this, Śiva assumed the form of phallic image. He became stationary. He is thereafter remembered as Acaleśa.

स भिल्ल आहुकश्चापि वीरसेनसुतोऽभवत् ॥ नैषधे नगरे तात नलनामा महानृपः ॥ ३३॥
sa bhilla AhukazcApi vIrasenasuto'bhavat ॥ naiSadhe nagare tAta nalanAmA mahAnRpaH ॥ 33॥
O dear, the Bhilla Āhuka was born as the son of Vīrasena in the city of Niṣadha. He was the great king Nala.

आहुका सा महाभिल्ली भीमस्य तनयाऽभवत् ॥ वैदर्भे नगरे राज्ञो दमयन्तीति विश्रुता ॥ ३४ ॥
AhukA sA mahAbhillI bhImasya tanayA'bhavat ॥ vaidarbhe nagare rAjJo damayantIti vizrutA ॥ 34 ॥
That great Bhillī, Āhukā was born as the daughter of king Bhīma in the city of Vidarbha. She became famous as Damayantī.

यतिनाथाह्वयस्सोपि हंसरूपोऽभवच्छिवः ॥ विवाहं कारयामास दमयन्त्या नलेन वै ॥ ३५ ॥
yatinAthAhvayassopi haMsarUpo'bhavacchivaH ॥ vivAhaM kArayAmAsa damayantyA nalena vai ॥ 35 ॥
Śiva in the form of Yatinātha was born as a swan. He managed the marriage of Damayantī with Nala.

पूर्वसत्काररूपेण महापुण्येन शंकरः ॥ हंसरूपं विधायैव ताभ्यां सुखमदात्प्रभुः ॥ ३६ ॥
pUrvasatkArarUpeNa mahApuNyena zaMkaraH ॥ haMsarUpaM vidhAyaiva tAbhyAM sukhamadAtprabhuH ॥ 36 ॥
It was due to the merit accruing from hospitality that lord Śiva gave them pleasure after assuming the form of a swan.

शिवो हंसावतारो हि नानावार्ताविचक्षणः ॥ दमयन्त्या नलस्यापि परमानन्ददायकः ॥ ३७ ॥
zivo haMsAvatAro hi nAnAvArtAvicakSaNaH ॥ damayantyA nalasyApi paramAnandadAyakaH ॥ 37 ॥
The incarnation of Śiva as the swan adept in the art of intelligence, was the bestower of great bliss to Damayantī as well as to Nala.

इदं चरितं परमं पवित्रं शिवावतारस्य पवित्रकीर्तेः ॥ यतीशसंज्ञस्य महाद्भुतं हि हंसाह्वयस्यापि विमुक्तिदं हि ॥ ३८ ॥
idaM caritaM paramaM pavitraM zivAvatArasya pavitrakIrteH ॥ yatIzasaMjJasya mahAdbhutaM hi haMsAhvayasyApi vimuktidaM hi ॥ 38 ॥
This great and holy narrative of Śiva’s incarnation of illustrious fame as swan is wonderful and indeed the bestower of salvation.

यतीशब्रह्महंसाख्यावतारचरितं शुभम् ॥ शृणुयाच्छ्रावयेद्यो हि स लभेत परां गतिम्॥ ३९॥
yatIzabrahmahaMsAkhyAvatAracaritaM zubham ॥ zRNuyAcchrAvayedyo hi sa labheta parAM gatim॥ 39॥
He who narrates or listens to the auspicious story of incarnation of Yatinatha haṃsa, attains the greatest goal.

इदमाख्यानमनघं सर्वकामफलप्रदम् ॥ स्वर्ग्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं भक्तिवर्धनमुत्तमम्॥ ४०॥

The story is faultless, bestower of the fruits of all desires and very excellent. It is conducive to the attainment of heaven, fame and longevity. It enhances devotion.

श्रुत्वैतच्चचरितं शम्भोर्यतिहंसस्वरूपयोः ॥ इह सर्वसुखम्भुक्त्वा सोऽन्ते शिवपुरं व्रजेत् ॥ ४१ ॥
zrutvaitaccacaritaM zambhoryatihaMsasvarUpayoH ॥ iha sarvasukhambhuktvA so'nte zivapuraM vrajet ॥ 41 ॥
After hearing this narrative of Śiva in the forms of an ascetic and a swan, the hearer enjoys all pleasures here and goes to Śiva’s abode hereafter.
