नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ अथ लोके व्यवस्थाय धर्मस्य स्थापनेच्छया ॥ महालीलां चकारेशस्तामहो सन्मुने शृणु ॥ १ ॥
nandIzvara uvAca ॥ atha loke vyavasthAya dharmasya sthApanecchayA ॥ mahAlIlAM cakArezastAmaho sanmune zRNu ॥ 1 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— After arranging and establishing Dharma with a desire for its good foundation, lord Śiva performed great sports. O good sage, listen to that.

एकदा पुष्पभद्रायां स्नातुं गच्छन्मुनीश्वरः ॥ ददर्श पद्मां युवतीं शिवांशां सुमनोहराम् ॥ २॥
ekadA puSpabhadrAyAM snAtuM gacchanmunIzvaraH ॥ dadarza padmAM yuvatIM zivAMzAM sumanoharAm ॥ 2॥
Once while going to the river Puṣpabhadrā for his ablution, the great sage saw the beautiful youthful maiden Padmā, a part of Śivā herself.

तल्लिप्सुस्तत्पितुः स्थानमनरण्यस्य भूपतेः ॥ जगाम भुवनाचारी लोकतत्त्वविचक्षणः ॥ ३ ॥
tallipsustatpituH sthAnamanaraNyasya bhUpateH ॥ jagAma bhuvanAcArI lokatattvavicakSaNaH ॥ 3 ॥
Desirous of getting her, the sage traversing the world and an expert in following the established conventions went to the abode of king Anaraṇya, her father.

राजा नराणां तं दृष्ट्वा प्रणम्य च भयाकुलः ॥ मधुपर्कादिकं दत्त्वा पूजयामास भक्तितः ॥ ४ ॥
rAjA narANAM taM dRSTvA praNamya ca bhayAkulaH ॥ madhuparkAdikaM dattvA pUjayAmAsa bhaktitaH ॥ 4 ॥
On seeing him, the awe-struck king of men bowed to him. Offering him Madhuparka he worshipped him devotedly.

स्नेहात्सर्वं गृहीत्वा स ययाचे कन्यकां मुनिः ॥ मौनी बभूव नृपतिः किंचिन्निर्वक्तुमक्षमः ॥ ५ ॥
snehAtsarvaM gRhItvA sa yayAce kanyakAM muniH ॥ maunI babhUva nRpatiH kiMcinnirvaktumakSamaH ॥ 5 ॥
The sage accepted everything with regard and requested for the hand of his daughter. Thereupon the king was unable to say anything. He was silent.

मुनिः प्रोवाच नृपतिं कन्यां मे देहि भक्तितः ॥ अन्यथा भस्मसात्सर्वं करिष्येहं त्वया सह ॥ ६॥
muniH provAca nRpatiM kanyAM me dehi bhaktitaH ॥ anyathA bhasmasAtsarvaM kariSyehaM tvayA saha ॥ 6॥
The sage repeated the request, saying “Give me your daughter devoutly. Otherwise I will reduce everything to ashes along with you.”

अथो बभूवुराच्छन्नाः सर्वे राजजनास्तदा ॥ तेजसा पिप्पलादस्य दाधीचस्य महामुने ॥ ७ ॥
atho babhUvurAcchannAH sarve rAjajanAstadA ॥ tejasA pippalAdasya dAdhIcasya mahAmune ॥ 7 ॥
O great sage, then all the people of the king were enveloped by the brilliance of Pippalāda, son of Dadhīci.

अथ राजा महाभीतो विलप्य च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ कन्यामलंकृताम्पद्मां वृद्धाय मुनये ददौ ॥ ८ ॥
atha rAjA mahAbhIto vilapya ca muhurmuhuH ॥ kanyAmalaMkRtAmpadmAM vRddhAya munaye dadau ॥ 8 ॥
Then the king was much frightened and he lamented again and again. He gave his daughter Padmā, fully bedecked in ornaments to the old sage.

पद्मां विवाह्य स मुनिश्शिवांशाम्भूपतेः सुताम् ॥ पिप्पलादो गृहीत्वा तां मुदितः स्वाश्रमं ययौ ॥ ९ ॥
padmAM vivAhya sa munizzivAMzAmbhUpateH sutAm ॥ pippalAdo gRhItvA tAM muditaH svAzramaM yayau ॥ 9 ॥
After marrying Padmā, the daughter of the king and a part of Śivā, the sage Pippalāda joyously took her to his hermitage.

तत्र गत्वा मुनिवरो वयसा जर्जरोधिकः ॥ उवाच नार्या स तया तपस्वीनातिलम्पटः ॥ १०॥
tatra gatvA munivaro vayasA jarjarodhikaH ॥ uvAca nAryA sa tayA tapasvInAtilampaTaH ॥ 10॥
After going to the hermitage the aged excellent sage stayed there with that woman. The sage was not too indulgent.

अथोऽनरण्यकन्या सा सिषेवे भक्तितो मुनिम् ॥ कर्मणा मनसा वाचा लक्ष्मीर्नारायणं यथा ॥ ११॥
atho'naraNyakanyA sA siSeve bhaktito munim ॥ karmaNA manasA vAcA lakSmIrnArAyaNaM yathA ॥ 11॥
Then the daughter of Anaraṇya served the sage with devotion, in mind, word and deed, like Lakṣmī serving Viṣṇu.

इत्थं स पिप्पलादो हि शिवांशो मुनिसत्तमः ॥ रेमे तया युवत्या च युवाभूय स्वलीलया ॥ १२ ॥
itthaM sa pippalAdo hi zivAMzo munisattamaH ॥ reme tayA yuvatyA ca yuvAbhUya svalIlayA ॥ 12 ॥
Then the excellent sage Pippalāda, a part of Śiva, became a young man by means of his divine sport and sported with that young lady.

दश पुत्रा महात्मानो बभूवुस्सुतपस्विनः ॥ मुनेः पितुस्समाः सर्वे पद्मायाः सुखवर्द्धनाः ॥ १३॥
daza putrA mahAtmAno babhUvussutapasvinaH ॥ muneH pitussamAH sarve padmAyAH sukhavarddhanAH ॥ 13॥
Ten noble sons, all of them great sons, were born to the sage. They were equal to their father and increased the pleasure of Padmā.

एवं लीलावतारो हि शंकरस्य महाप्रभोः ॥ पिप्पलादो मुनिवरो नानालीलाकरः प्रभुः ॥ १४ ॥
evaM lIlAvatAro hi zaMkarasya mahAprabhoH ॥ pippalAdo munivaro nAnAlIlAkaraH prabhuH ॥ 14 ॥
This is the sportive incarnation of Śiva the great lord. The excellent sage Pippalāda was the lord indulgent in different kinds of divine sports.

येन दत्तो वरः प्रीत्या लोकेभ्यो हि दयालुना ॥ दृष्ट्वा लोके शनेः पीडां सर्वेषामनिवारिणीम् ॥ १५ ॥
yena datto varaH prItyA lokebhyo hi dayAlunA ॥ dRSTvA loke zaneH pIDAM sarveSAmanivAriNIm ॥ 15 ॥
On seeing the harassment by the planet Saturn of every one irremediably, the sympathetic lord lovingly granted a boon to all the world.

षोडशाब्दावधि नृणां जन्मतो न भवेच्च सा ॥ तथा च शिवभक्तानां सत्यमेतद्धि मे वचः ॥ १६ ॥
SoDazAbdAvadhi nRNAM janmato na bhavecca sA ॥ tathA ca zivabhaktAnAM satyametaddhi me vacaH ॥ 16 ॥
“For sixteen years from birth no man will have that affliction. Similarly to the devotees of Śiva too. This word of mine is true.

अथानादृत्य मद्वाक्यं कुर्यात्पीडां शनिः क्वचित् ॥ तेषां नृणां तदा स स्याद्भस्मसान्न हि संशयः ॥ १७ ॥
athAnAdRtya madvAkyaM kuryAtpIDAM zaniH kvacit ॥ teSAM nRNAM tadA sa syAdbhasmasAnna hi saMzayaH ॥ 17 ॥
If Saturn were to disregard my instruction and harass men, he will undoubtedly be reduced to ashes.”

इति तद्भयतस्तात विकृतोपि शनैश्चरः ॥ तेषां न कुरुते पीडां कदाचिद्ग्रहसत्तमः ॥ १८ ॥
iti tadbhayatastAta vikRtopi zanaizcaraH ॥ teSAM na kurute pIDAM kadAcidgrahasattamaH ॥ 18 ॥
O dear, thus, afraid of him the excellent planet Saturn, though in aberration, does not afflict men at anytime.

इति लीलामनुष्यस्य पिप्पलादस्य सन्मुने ॥ कथितं सुचरित्रन्ते सर्वकामफलप्रदम् ॥ १९ ॥
iti lIlAmanuSyasya pippalAdasya sanmune ॥ kathitaM sucaritrante sarvakAmaphalapradam ॥ 19 ॥
Thus I have narrated to you the good story of the great sage Pippalāda who bad assumed the form of a human being in the course of his divine sports. The story yields the fruit of all desires.

गाधिश्च कौशिकश्चैव पिप्पलादो महामुनिः ॥ शनैश्चरकृतां पीडां नाशयन्ति स्मृतास्त्रयः ॥ २० ॥
gAdhizca kauzikazcaiva pippalAdo mahAmuniH ॥ zanaizcarakRtAM pIDAM nAzayanti smRtAstrayaH ॥ 20 ॥
These three—Gādhi, Kauśika and the great sage Pippalāda quell the affliction of Śani on being remembered.

पिप्पलादस्य चरितं पद्माचरितसंयुतम् ॥ यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि सुभक्त्या भुवि मानवः ॥ २१ ॥
pippalAdasya caritaM padmAcaritasaMyutam ॥ yaH paThecchRNuyAdvApi subhaktyA bhuvi mAnavaH ॥ 21 ॥
The character of Pippalada is accompanied by the character of Padma Any human being on earth who reads or hears this with great devotion.

शनिपीडाविनाशार्थमेतच्चरितमुत्तमम् ॥ यः पठेच्छणुयाद्वापि सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् ॥ २२ ॥
zanipIDAvinAzArthametaccaritamuttamam ॥ yaH paThecchaNuyAdvApi sarvAnkAmAnavApnuyAt ॥ 22 ॥
This is an excellent character for the destruction of the pain of Saturn He who recites or hears this mantra attains all his desires.

धन्यो मुनिवरो ज्ञानी महाशैवः सताम्प्रियः ॥ अस्य पुत्रो महेशानः पिप्पलादाख्य आत्मवान् ॥ २३ ॥
dhanyo munivaro jJAnI mahAzaivaH satAmpriyaH ॥ asya putro mahezAnaH pippalAdAkhya AtmavAn ॥ 23 ॥
Blessed indeed is the great sage, who was wise and a great devotee of Śiva. He was a favourite of good men. Lord Śiva named Pippalāda was his noble son.

इदमाख्यानमनघं स्वर्ग्यं कुग्रहपोषहृत् ॥ सर्वकामप्रदन्तात शिवभक्तिविवर्द्धनम् ॥ २४ ॥
idamAkhyAnamanaghaM svargyaM kugrahapoSahRt ॥ sarvakAmapradantAta zivabhaktivivarddhanam ॥ 24 ॥
This pious narrative is conducive to the attainment of heaven. It quells the adverse effects of the evil planets. O dear, it yields all desires and enhances devotion to Śiva.
