nandIzvara uvAca ॥ athAnyaccaritaM zambho zzRNu prItyA mahAmune ॥ yathA babhUva durvAsAzzaMkaro dharmahetave ॥ 1 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— O great sage, now listen lovingly to another story of Śiva, how Śiva was born as Durvāsas for the maintenance of virtue.

ब्रह्मपुत्रो बभूवातितपस्वी ब्रह्मवित्प्रभुः ॥ अनसूयापतिर्धीमान्ब्रह्माज्ञाप्रतिपालकः ॥ २ ॥
brahmaputro babhUvAtitapasvI brahmavitprabhuH ॥ anasUyApatirdhImAnbrahmAjJApratipAlakaH ॥ 2 ॥
Atri, son of Brahmā, was a great sage. He was holy and a knower of Brahman. He was the husband of Anasūyā. He was intelligent and he strictly followed the orders of Brahmā.

सुनिर्देशाद्ब्रह्मणो हि सस्त्रीकः पुत्रकाम्यया ॥ स त्र्यक्षकुलनामानं ययौ च तपसे गिरिम् ॥ ३ ॥
sunirdezAdbrahmaNo hi sastrIkaH putrakAmyayA ॥ sa tryakSakulanAmAnaM yayau ca tapase girim ॥ 3 ॥
At the direction of Brahmā he went to the mountain Ṛkṣakula accompanied by his wife in order to perform penance there, with the desire to get son.

प्राणानायम्य विधिवन्निर्विन्ध्यातटिनीतटे ॥ तपश्चचार सुमहदद्वन्द्वोऽब्दशतम्मुनिः ॥ ४ ॥
prANAnAyamya vidhivannirvindhyAtaTinItaTe ॥ tapazcacAra sumahadadvandvo'bdazatammuniH ॥ 4 ॥
On the banks of the river Nirvindhyā, the sage who had controlled his breath and had freed himself from mutually clashing emotions performed a great penance for a hundred years.

ya eka IzvaraH kazcidavikAro mahAprabhuH ॥ sa me putravaraM dadyAditi nizcitamAnasaH ॥ 5 ॥
He decided in his mind thus—, “let that sole great lord, whoever he is, who is free from aberrations, grant me the boon of a son.”

बहुकालो व्यतीयाय तस्मिंस्तपति सत्तपः ॥ आविर्बभूव तत्कात्तु शुचिर्ज्वाला महीयसी ॥ ६ ॥
bahukAlo vyatIyAya tasmiMstapati sattapaH ॥ AvirbabhUva tatkAttu zucirjvAlA mahIyasI ॥ 6 ॥
A long time elapsed while he performed the holy penance. A holy flame of fire came out of him.

तया सन्निखिला लोका दग्धप्राया मुनीश्वराः ॥ तथा सुरर्षयः सर्वे पीडिता वासवादयः ॥ ७ ॥
tayA sannikhilA lokA dagdhaprAyA munIzvarAH ॥ tathA surarSayaH sarve pIDitA vAsavAdayaH ॥ 7 ॥
O great sage, the worlds were almost burnt by that flame. Indra and other gods and the celestial sages too were afflicted by it.

अथ सर्वे वासवाद्या सुराश्च मुनयो मुने ॥ ब्रह्मस्थानं ययुश्शीघ्रं तज्ज्वालातिप्रपीडिताः ॥ ८ ॥
atha sarve vAsavAdyA surAzca munayo mune ॥ brahmasthAnaM yayuzzIghraM tajjvAlAtiprapIDitAH ॥ 8 ॥
Then, highly distressed by that flame, O sage, Indra and other gods and the sages hastened to the abode of Brahmā.

नत्वा नुत्वा विधिन्देवास्तत्स्वदुःखन्न्यवेदयन् ॥ ब्रह्मा सह सुरैस्तात विष्णुलोकं ययावरम् ॥ ९॥
natvA nutvA vidhindevAstatsvaduHkhannyavedayan ॥ brahmA saha suraistAta viSNulokaM yayAvaram ॥ 9॥
After bowing to and eulogising Brahmā the gods mentioned to him their grief. O dear, Brahmā immediately went to Viṣṇu’s region along with the god.

तत्र गत्वा रमानाथं नत्वा नुत्वा विधिस्सुरैः ॥ स्वदुःखन्तत्समाचख्यौ विष्णवेऽनन्तकं मुने ॥ १० ॥
tatra gatvA ramAnAthaM natvA nutvA vidhissuraiH ॥ svaduHkhantatsamAcakhyau viSNave'nantakaM mune ॥ 10 ॥
O sage, after reaching there along with the gods Brahmā bowed to and eulogised Viṣṇu and mentioned his endless grief to him.

viSNuzca vidhinA devai rudrasthAnaM yayau drutam ॥ haraM praNamya tatretya tuSTAva paramezvaram ॥ 11॥
Viṣṇu too, accompanied by Brahmā and the gods hastened to Rudra’s abode. After reaching it he bowed to and eulogised lord Śiva.

stutvA bahutayA viSNuM svaduHkhaM ca nyavedayat ॥ zarvaM jvAlAsamudbhUtamatrezca tapasaH param ॥ 12॥
After eulogising him Viṣṇu mentioned to Śiva his grief caused by the flame due to the penance of Atri.

अथ तत्र समेस्तास्तु ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वराः ॥ मुने संमन्त्रयाञ्चक्रुरन्योन्यं जगतां हितम् ॥ १३ ॥
atha tatra samestAstu brahmaviSNumahezvarAH ॥ mune saMmantrayAJcakruranyonyaM jagatAM hitam ॥ 13 ॥
O sage, thus gathering there, together, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva consulted one another about the welfare of the worlds.

तदा ब्रह्मादयो देवास्त्रयस्ते वरदर्षभाः ॥ जग्मुस्तदाश्रमं शीघ्रं वरन्दातुन्तदर्षये ॥ १४ ॥
tadA brahmAdayo devAstrayaste varadarSabhAH ॥ jagmustadAzramaM zIghraM varandAtuntadarSaye ॥ 14 ॥
The three deities Brahmā and others, foremost among the bestowers of boons, went to the hermitage of Atri immediately to grant him the boon.

स्वचिह्नचिह्नितांस्तान्स दृष्ट्वात्रिर्मुनिसत्तमः ॥ प्रणनाम च तुष्टाव वाग्भिरिष्टाभिरादरात् ॥ १५ ॥
svacihnacihnitAMstAnsa dRSTvAtrirmunisattamaH ॥ praNanAma ca tuSTAva vAgbhiriSTAbhirAdarAt ॥ 15 ॥
On seeing them marked by their respective characteristic signs, the excellent sage Atri bowed to and eulogised them respectfully by uttering pleasing words.

ततस्स विस्मितो विप्रस्तानुवाच कृताञ्जलिः ॥ ब्रह्मपुत्रो विनीतात्मा ब्रह्मविष्णुहराभिधान् ॥ १६ ॥
tatassa vismito viprastAnuvAca kRtAJjaliH ॥ brahmaputro vinItAtmA brahmaviSNuharAbhidhAn ॥ 16 ॥
The surprised brahmin, the humble son of Brahmā spoke to those deities Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva, with palms joined in reverence.

अत्रिरुवाच ॥ हे ब्रह्मन् हे हरे रुद्र पूज्यास्त्रिजगताम्मताः ॥ प्रभवश्चेश्वराः सृष्टिरक्षासंहारकारकाः ॥ १७ ॥
atriruvAca ॥ he brahman he hare rudra pUjyAstrijagatAmmatAH ॥ prabhavazcezvarAH sRSTirakSAsaMhArakArakAH ॥ 17 ॥
Atri said:— O Brahmā, O Viṣṇu, O Śiva, you are worthy of being worshipped by the three worlds. You are lords and masters and the cause of creation, maintenance and annihilation.

एक एव मया ध्यात ईश्वरः पुत्रहेतवे ॥ यः कश्चिदीश्वरः ख्यातो जगतां स्वस्त्रिया सह ॥ १८ ॥
eka eva mayA dhyAta IzvaraH putrahetave ॥ yaH kazcidIzvaraH khyAto jagatAM svastriyA saha ॥ 18 ॥
Accompanied by my wife, I meditated only on a single lord for obtaining a son, that lord whoever he may be, who is famous as Īśvara.

यूयं त्रयस्तुराः कस्मादागता वरदर्षभाः ॥ एतन्मे संशयं छित्त्वा ततो दत्तेप्सितं वरम् ॥ १९ ॥
yUyaM trayasturAH kasmAdAgatA varadarSabhAH ॥ etanme saMzayaM chittvA tato dattepsitaM varam ॥ 19 ॥
How is it that you three deities, the foremost among the bestowers of boons have come here? Please dispel my doubt and then grant me the desired boon.

iti zrutvA vacastasya pratyUcuste surAstrayaH ॥ yAdRkkRtaste saMkalpastathaivAbhUnmunIzvara ॥ 20 ॥
On hearing his words, the three deities replied “O great sage, what has occurred is in accordance with what you have conceived.

वयं त्रयो भवेशानास्समाना वरदर्षभाः ॥ अस्मदंशभवास्तस्माद्भविष्यन्ति सुतास्त्रयः ॥ २१ ॥
vayaM trayo bhavezAnAssamAnA varadarSabhAH ॥ asmadaMzabhavAstasmAdbhaviSyanti sutAstrayaH ॥ 21 ॥
We three are great lords and equally leading among the granters of boons. Hence three sons originating from our parts will be born to you.

विदिता भुवने सर्वे पित्रोः कीर्तिविवर्द्धनाः ॥ इत्युक्तास्ते त्रयो देवास्स्वधामानि ययुर्मुदा ॥ २२ ॥
viditA bhuvane sarve pitroH kIrtivivarddhanAH ॥ ityuktAste trayo devAssvadhAmAni yayurmudA ॥ 22 ॥
They will be known in the world as enhancers of their parent’s reputation.” After saying this, the three deities returned to their abodes joyously.

वरं लब्ध्वा मुनिस्सोऽथ जगाम स्वाश्रमं मुदा ॥ युतोऽनुसूयया प्रीतो ब्रह्मानंदप्रदो मुने ॥ २३ ॥
varaM labdhvA munisso'tha jagAma svAzramaM mudA ॥ yuto'nusUyayA prIto brahmAnaMdaprado mune ॥ 23 ॥
After securing the boon, the sage joyously returned to his hermitage accompanied by Anasūyā. O sage, he was delighted and he experienced the bliss of the supreme Brahman.

अथ ब्रह्मा हरिश्शम्भुरवतेरुः स्त्रियां ततः ॥ पुत्ररूपैः प्रसन्नात्मनानालीला प्रकाशकाः ॥ २४ ॥
atha brahmA harizzambhuravateruH striyAM tataH ॥ putrarUpaiH prasannAtmanAnAlIlA prakAzakAH ॥ 24 ॥
Then Brahma, Viṣṇu and Śiva, the delighted exponents of different kinds of sports, took their incarnations as the sons of his wife.

विधेरंशाद्विधुर्जज्ञेऽनसूयायां मुनीश्वरात् ॥ आविर्बभूवोदधितः शिप्तो देवेस्स एव हि ॥ २५ ॥
vidheraMzAdvidhurjajJe'nasUyAyAM munIzvarAt ॥ AvirbabhUvodadhitaH zipto devessa eva hi ॥ 25 ॥
The part of Brahmā was born as the moon in Anasūyā from the great sage. Hurled by the gods into the ocean he alone could come out of it.

विष्णोरंशात्स्त्रियान्तस्यामत्रेर्दत्तो व्यजायत ॥ संन्यासपद्धतिर्येन वर्द्धिता परमा मुने ॥ २६ ॥
viSNoraMzAtstriyAntasyAmatrerdatto vyajAyata ॥ saMnyAsapaddhatiryena varddhitA paramA mune ॥ 26 ॥
O sage, the part of Viṣṇu was born of that lady, wife of Atri, as Datta by whom the great path of renunciation was expanded.

durvAsA munizArdUlaH zivAMzAnmunisattamaH ॥ jajJe tasyAM striyAmatrervaradharmapravartakaH ॥ 27 ॥
The part of Śiva was born of that wife of Atri as the excellent and leading sage Durvāsas who propagated excellent virtue.

भूत्वा रुद्रश्च दुर्वासा ब्रह्मतेजोविवर्द्धनः ॥ चक्रे धर्मपरीक्षाञ्च बहूनां स दयापरः ॥ २८ ॥
bhUtvA rudrazca durvAsA brahmatejovivarddhanaH ॥ cakre dharmaparIkSAJca bahUnAM sa dayAparaH ॥ 28 ॥
Siva by becoming Durvāsas, the enhancer of Brahminical splendour, tested the piety of many people. He was merciful.

सूर्यवंशे समुत्पन्नो योऽम्बरीषो नृपोऽभवत् ॥ तत्परीक्षामकार्षीत्स तां शृणु त्वं मुनीश्वर। ॥ २९ ॥
sUryavaMze samutpanno yo'mbarISo nRpo'bhavat ॥ tatparIkSAmakArSItsa tAM zRNu tvaM munIzvara। ॥ 29 ॥
The king Ambarīṣa, a scion of the solar dynasty, was tested by him. O great sage, listen to that story.

सोऽम्बरीषो नृपवरः सप्तद्वीपरसापतिः ॥ नियमं हि चकारासावेकादश्या व्रते दृढम् ॥ ३० ॥
so'mbarISo nRpavaraH saptadvIparasApatiH ॥ niyamaM hi cakArAsAvekAdazyA vrate dRDham ॥ 30 ॥
The king Ambarīṣa was the lord of the earth consisting of seven continents. He observed the rite of Ekādaśī regularly with steady restraint.

एकादश्या व्रतं कृत्वा द्वादश्यां चैव पारणाम् ॥ करिष्यामीति सुदृढसंकल्पस्तु नराधिपः ॥ ३१॥
ekAdazyA vrataM kRtvA dvAdazyAM caiva pAraNAm ॥ kariSyAmIti sudRDhasaMkalpastu narAdhipaH ॥ 31॥
The king had the firm resolve that he would perform the rite of breaking fast on the Dvādaśī day.

jJAtvA tanniyamantasya durvAsA munisattamaH॥ tadantikaM gatazziSyairbahubhizzaMkarAMzajaH ॥ 32॥
Coming to know of his regular observance the excellent sage Durvāsas, born of Śiva’s part approached him with many disciples.

पारणे द्वादशीं स्वल्पां ज्ञात्वा यावत्स भोजनम् ॥ कर्त्तुं व्यवसितस्तावदागतं स न्यमन्त्रयत् ॥ ३३ ॥
pAraNe dvAdazIM svalpAM jJAtvA yAvatsa bhojanam ॥ karttuM vyavasitastAvadAgataM sa nyamantrayat ॥ 33 ॥
The king was about to take his breakfast realising that very little of Dvādaśī was left on that day when the sage came there. The king invited him for food.

ततः स्नानार्थमगमद्दुर्वासाः शिष्यसंयुतः ॥ विलम्बं कृतवांस्तत्र परीक्षार्थं मुनिर्बहु ॥ ३४॥
tataH snAnArthamagamaddurvAsAH ziSyasaMyutaH ॥ vilambaM kRtavAMstatra parIkSArthaM munirbahu ॥ 34॥
Then the sage Durvāsas went away for his ceremonial ablution, accompanied by his disciples In order to test the king, the sage purposely delayed there.

धर्मविघ्नं तदा ज्ञात्वा स नृपः शास्त्रशासनात् ॥ जलम्प्राश्यास्थितस्तत्र तदागमनकांक्षया ॥ ३५॥
dharmavighnaM tadA jJAtvA sa nRpaH zAstrazAsanAt ॥ jalamprAzyAsthitastatra tadAgamanakAMkSayA ॥ 35॥
Realising that there would be violation of sacred injunction otherwise, the king took in a small quantity of water and waited for the arrival of the sage.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र दुर्वासा मुनिरागतः ॥ कृताशनं नृपं ज्ञात्वा परीक्षार्थं धृताकृतिः ॥ ३६ ॥
etasminnantare tatra durvAsA munirAgataH ॥ kRtAzanaM nRpaM jJAtvA parIkSArthaM dhRtAkRtiH ॥ 36 ॥
Meanwhile the sage Durvasa arrived there Knowing that the king had eaten he assumed a form to test him.

चुक्रोधाति नृपे तस्मिन्परीक्षार्थं वृषस्य सः ॥ प्रोवाच वचनन्तूग्रं स मुनिश्शंकरांशजः ॥ ३७ ॥
cukrodhAti nRpe tasminparIkSArthaM vRSasya saH ॥ provAca vacanantUgraM sa munizzaMkarAMzajaH ॥ 37 ॥
He became angry with the king for testing the bull The sage born of Lord Śiva spoke in harsh words.

durvAsA uvAca ॥ mAM nimantrya nRpAbhojya jalaM pItantvayAdhama ॥ darzayAmi phalaM tasya duSTadaNDadharo hyaham ॥ 38॥
Durvāsas said:— O base king, after inviting but without feeding me you have taken in water. I shall show you the fruit thereof. For I am the chastiser of the wicked.

इत्युक्त्वा क्रोधताम्राक्षो नृपं दग्धुं समुद्यतः ॥ समुत्तस्थौ द्रुतं चक्रं तत्स्थं रक्षार्थमैश्वरम् ॥ ३९॥
ityuktvA krodhatAmrAkSo nRpaM dagdhuM samudyataH ॥ samuttasthau drutaM cakraM tatsthaM rakSArthamaizvaram ॥ 39॥
Having said this Rama with red eyes in anger prepared to burn the king The wheel quickly rose up to protect the lord who was standing there.

प्रजज्वालाति तं चक्रं मुनिं दग्धुं सुदर्शनम्॥ शिवरूपं तमज्ञात्वा शिवमायाविमोहितम्॥ ४०॥
prajajvAlAti taM cakraM muniM dagdhuM sudarzanam॥ zivarUpaM tamajJAtvA zivamAyAvimohitam॥ 40॥
The Sudarsana wheel flared up to burn the sage. Knowing him to be the form of Siva he was deluded by the illusion of Siva.

Ambarīṣa said:— If I possess the merit of charity and sacrifice, if my spiritual duty has been well performed by me, and if our family considers brahmins godly, let the weapon of Viṣṇu turn calm.

Nandishwara said. Thus he praises the Sudarsana wheel of Shiva on the top of Rudra. He was not at all calm knowing that he was a part of Shiva and had a good intellect.
