nandIzvara uvAca ॥ yakSezvarAvatAraM ca zRNu zaMbhormunIzvara ॥ garviNaM garvahantAraM satAmbhaktivivarddhanam ॥ 1 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— O great sage, listen to the Yakṣeśvara incarnation of Śiva, that dispels the arrogance of the arrogant and lets the devotion of the good flourish.

purA devAzca daityAzca pIyUSArthammahAbalAH ॥ kSIrodadhiM mamanthuste sukRta svArtha sandhayaH ॥ 2 ॥
Formerly, the powerful gods and the Daityas motivated by the desire to gain their selfish ends churned the milk ocean for achieving nectar.

mathyamAne'mRte pUrvaM kSIrAbdhessuradAnavaiH ॥ agneH samutthitaM tasmAdviSaM kAlAnalaprabham ॥ 3 ॥
When the churning of the milk ocean started as the gods and demons wanted nectar, poison blazing as the fire of dissolution came out at first.

taM dRSTvA nikhilA devA daityAzca bhayavihvalAH ॥ vidrutya tarasA tAta zaMbhoste zaraNaM yayuH ॥ 4 ॥
O dear, at the sight of it, the gods and the daityas were highly agitated and frightened. They fled from there immediately and sought refuge in Śiva.

dRSTvA taM zaMkaraM sarve sarvadevazikhAmaNim ॥ praNamya tuSTuvurbhaktyA sAcyutA natamastakAH ॥ 5 ॥
After seeing Śiva, the crestjewel of all the gods, all of them including Viṣṇu devoutly bent their heads and bowed to Viṣṇu with devotion.

tataH prasanno bhagavAcchaGkaro bhaktavatsalaH ॥ papau viSaM mahAghoraM surAsuragaNArdanam ॥ 6 ॥
Then the delighted lord Śiva favourably disposed to the devotees, quaffed off the terrible poison afflicting gods and Asuras.

पतिं तं विषमं कण्ठे निदधे विषमुल्बणम् ॥ रेजेतेनाति स विभुर्नीलकण्ठो बभूव ह ॥ ७ ॥
patiM taM viSamaM kaNThe nidadhe viSamulbaNam ॥ rejetenAti sa vibhurnIlakaNTho babhUva ha ॥ 7 ॥
The lord retained obliquely the acute poison that he drank, in his neck. He shone much thereby and became Blue-necked.

ततः सुरा सुरगणा ममन्थुः पुनरेव तम् ॥ विषदाहविनिर्मुक्ताः शिवानुग्रहतोऽखिलाः ॥ ८ ॥
tataH surA suragaNA mamanthuH punareva tam ॥ viSadAhavinirmuktAH zivAnugrahato'khilAH ॥ 8 ॥
Released from the burning sensation of the poison thanks to the blessings of Śiva, the gods and the Asuras began to churn again.

तातो बहूनि रत्नानि निस्सृतानि ततो मुने ॥ अमृतं च पदार्थं हि सुरदानवयोर्मुने ॥ ९ ॥
tAto bahUni ratnAni nissRtAni tato mune ॥ amRtaM ca padArthaM hi suradAnavayormune ॥ 9 ॥
O sage, many gems came out of it, but O sage, it was the nectar that the gods and the Dānavas prized much.

तत्पपुः केवलन्देवा नासुराः कृपया हरेः ॥ ततो बभूव सुमहद्रत्नं तेषां मिथोऽकदम् ॥ १० ॥
tatpapuH kevalandevA nAsurAH kRpayA hareH ॥ tato babhUva sumahadratnaM teSAM mitho'kadam ॥ 10 ॥
Not the Asuras, but the gods drank the nectar, thanks to the favour of Viṣṇu. Then a great battle ensued between them inflicting pain on both.

dvandvayuddhambabhUvAtha devadAnavayormune ॥ tatra rAhubhayAccandro vidudrAva tadarditaH ॥ 11 ॥
A mutual clash occurred between the gods and the Dānavas, O sage. The moon was eclipsed by Rāhu and fled in terror of Rāhu.

जगाम सदनं शंभोः शरणम्भय विह्वलः ॥ सुप्रणम्य च तुष्टाव पाहिपाहीति संवदन् ॥ १२ ॥
jagAma sadanaM zaMbhoH zaraNambhaya vihvalaH ॥ supraNamya ca tuSTAva pAhipAhIti saMvadan ॥ 12 ॥
He went to the abode of Śiva extremely agitated by fear and sought Śiva’s protection. Saying “Protect me O Lord, protect me” he bowed to the lord and eulogised him.

ततस्सतामभयदः शंकरो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ दध्रे शिरसि चन्द्रं स विभुश्शरणमागतम् ॥ १३ ॥
tatassatAmabhayadaH zaMkaro bhaktavatsalaH ॥ dadhre zirasi candraM sa vibhuzzaraNamAgatam ॥ 13 ॥
Lord Śiva, the bestower of protection to the good, and favourably disposed to his devotees, wore the moon on his head as the latter had sought refuge.

अथागतस्तदा राहुस्तुष्टाव सुप्रणम्य तम् ॥ शंकरं सकलाधीशं वाग्भिरिष्टाभिरादरात् ॥ १४ ॥
athAgatastadA rAhustuSTAva supraNamya tam ॥ zaMkaraM sakalAdhIzaM vAgbhiriSTAbhirAdarAt ॥ 14 ॥
Then Rāhu too, came there. He bowed to and eulogised lord Śiva with reverence by means of sweet words.

शंभुस्तन्मतमाज्ञाय तच्छिरांस्यच्युतेन ह ॥ पुरा छिन्नानि वै केतुसंज्ञानि निदधे गले ॥ १५॥
zaMbhustanmatamAjJAya tacchirAMsyacyutena ha ॥ purA chinnAni vai ketusaMjJAni nidadhe gale ॥ 15॥
Realising his desire, Śiva fixed on to his neck his head that had been formerly cut off by Viṣṇu, and that was known as Ketu.

ततो युद्धेऽसुराः सर्वे देवैश्चैव पराजिताः ॥ पीत्वाऽमृतं सुरास्सर्व्वे जयम्प्रापुर्महाबलाः ॥ १६॥
tato yuddhe'surAH sarve devaizcaiva parAjitAH ॥ pItvA'mRtaM surAssarvve jayamprApurmahAbalAH ॥ 16॥
Then the Asuras were defeated by the gods in the battle. By drinking nectar the gods had become powerful and gained victory.

विष्णुप्रभृतयः सर्व्वे बभूवुश्चातिगर्विताः ॥ बलानि चांकुरंतोन्तश्शिवमायाविमोहिताः ॥ १७॥
viSNuprabhRtayaH sarvve babhUvuzcAtigarvitAH ॥ balAni cAMkuraMtontazzivamAyAvimohitAH ॥ 17॥
Deluded by Śiva’s Māyā, Viṣṇu and others became very haughty. Their strength began to take root and sprout within them.

ततस्स शंकरो देवः सर्वाधीशोथ गर्वहा ॥ यक्षो भूत्वा जगामाशु यत्र देवाः स्थिता मुने ॥ १८॥
tatassa zaMkaro devaH sarvAdhIzotha garvahA ॥ yakSo bhUtvA jagAmAzu yatra devAH sthitA mune ॥ 18॥
O sage, then Lord Śiva, the suppressor of arrogance, became a Yakṣa. He hastened to the place, O sage, where the gods were stationed.

सर्वान्दृष्ट्वाच्युतमुखान्देवान्यक्षपतिस्स वै ॥ महागर्वाढ्यमनसा महेशाः प्राह गर्वहा ॥ १९॥
sarvAndRSTvAcyutamukhAndevAnyakSapatissa vai ॥ mahAgarvADhyamanasA mahezAH prAha garvahA ॥ 19॥
On seeing Viṣṇu and all other gods arrogant in their minds, lord Śiva, the lord of Yakṣas and the suppressor of arrogance spoke.

यक्षेश्वर उवाच ॥ किमर्थं संस्थिता यूयमत्र सर्वे सुरा मिथः ॥ किमु काष्ठाखिलम्ब्रूत कारणं मेनुपृच्छते ॥ २०॥
yakSezvara uvAca ॥ kimarthaM saMsthitA yUyamatra sarve surA mithaH ॥ kimu kASThAkhilambrUta kAraNaM menupRcchate ॥ 20॥
Yakṣeśvara said:— O ye gods, why have you all assembled here. What is your goal? Tell me the reason as I ask unto you.

देवा ऊचुः ॥ अभूदत्र महान्देव रणः परमदारुणः ॥ असुरा नाशितास्सर्वेऽवशिष्टा विद्रुता गताः ॥ २१॥
devA UcuH ॥ abhUdatra mahAndeva raNaH paramadAruNaH ॥ asurA nAzitAssarve'vaziSTA vidrutA gatAH ॥ 21॥
The gods said— O lord, a terrible battle took place here wherein all the Asuras were killed. The few that remained fled away.

वयं सर्वे महावीरा दैत्यघ्ना बलवत्तराः ॥ अग्रेस्माकं कियन्तस्ते दैत्य क्षुद्रबलास्सदा ॥ २२ ॥
vayaM sarve mahAvIrA daityaghnA balavattarAH ॥ agresmAkaM kiyantaste daitya kSudrabalAssadA ॥ 22 ॥
We are great heroes and powerful slayers of the Daityas. How insignificant in strength are those Daityas in front of us!

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ iti zrutvA vacasteSAM surANAM garvagarbhitam ॥ garvahAsau mahAdevo yakSarUpo vaco'bravIt ॥ 23 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— On hearing the arrogant words of those gods, lord Śiva, the suppressor of arrogance, in the form of Yakṣa said.

यक्षेश्वर उवाच ॥ हे सुरा निखिला यूयं मद्वचश्शृणुतादरात् ॥ यथार्थं वच्मि नासत्यं सर्वगर्वापहारकम् ॥ २४ ॥
yakSezvara uvAca ॥ he surA nikhilA yUyaM madvacazzRNutAdarAt ॥ yathArthaM vacmi nAsatyaM sarvagarvApahArakam ॥ 24 ॥
Yakṣeśvara said:— O ye gods, you listen to my words with attention. I shall tell you the truth that will dispel arrogance.

गर्व्वमेनं न कुरुत कर्त्ता हर्त्ताऽपरः प्रभुः ॥ विस्मृताश्च महेशानं कथयध्वम्वृथाबलाः ॥ २५ ॥
garvvamenaM na kuruta karttA harttA'paraH prabhuH ॥ vismRtAzca mahezAnaM kathayadhvamvRthAbalAH ॥ 25 ॥
Do not be arrogant. There is another lord who is the creator and annihilator. You have forgotten the great lord. You boast too much but you are devoid of strength.

युष्माकञ्चेत्स हि मदो जानतां स्वबलम्महत् ॥ मत्स्थापितं तृणमिदं छिन्त स्वास्त्रैश्च तैस्सुराः ॥ २६ ॥
yuSmAkaJcetsa hi mado jAnatAM svabalammahat ॥ matsthApitaM tRNamidaM chinta svAstraizca taissurAH ॥ 26 ॥
If you are proud and think that you know your strength to be great, O gods, split this blade of grass placed by me, with your own weapons.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityuktvaikatRNanteSAM nicikSepa purastataH ॥ jahre sarvamadaM yakSarUpa IzassatAMgatiH ॥ 27॥
Nandīśvara said:— Saying this, śiva in the form of Yakṣa, the goal of the good, placed a blade of grass before them and dispelled their arrogance.

अथ सर्वे सुरा विष्णुप्रमुखा वीरमानिनः ॥ कृत्वा स्वपौरुषन्तत्र स्वायुधानि विचिक्षिपुः ॥ २८॥
atha sarve surA viSNupramukhA vIramAninaH ॥ kRtvA svapauruSantatra svAyudhAni vicikSipuH ॥ 28॥
Then Viṣṇu and other gods professing to be heroic exerted their manliness and hurled their respective weapons.

तत्रासन् विफलान्याशु तान्यस्त्राणि दिवौकसाम् ॥ शिवप्रभावतस्तेषां मूढगर्वापहारिणः ॥ २९ ॥
tatrAsan viphalAnyAzu tAnyastrANi divaukasAm ॥ zivaprabhAvatasteSAM mUDhagarvApahAriNaH ॥ 29 ॥
But the weapons of the gods, were rendered fruitless before the power of Śiva, the destroyer of the arrogance of the deluded.

अथासीत्तु नभोवाणी देवविस्मयहारिणी ॥ यक्षोऽयं शंकरो देवाः सर्वगर्वापहारकः ॥ ३०॥
athAsIttu nabhovANI devavismayahAriNI ॥ yakSo'yaM zaMkaro devAH sarvagarvApahArakaH ॥ 30॥
Then a celestial voice arose that dispelled the surprise of the gods—“O gods this Yakṣa is Śiva who removes the arrogance of the arrogant.

कर्ता हर्त्ता तथा भर्त्ताऽयमेव परमेश्वरः ॥ एतद्बलेन वलिनो जीवाः सर्वेऽन्यथा न हि ॥ ३१ ॥
kartA harttA tathA bharttA'yameva paramezvaraH ॥ etadbalena valino jIvAH sarve'nyathA na hi ॥ 31 ॥
The lord himself is the creator, sustainer and annihilator. The living beings are powerful thanks only to his power. Otherwise they are not powerful.

अस्य मायाप्रभावाद्वै मोहिताः स्वप्रभुं शिवम् ॥ मदतो बुबुधु नैवाद्यापि बोधतनुम्प्रभुम् ॥ ३२ ॥
asya mAyAprabhAvAdvai mohitAH svaprabhuM zivam ॥ madato bubudhu naivAdyApi bodhatanumprabhum ॥ 32 ॥
Deluded by the power of his illusion you have become arrogant and have not realised lord śiva, who is the very knowledge embodied.

इति श्रुत्वा नभोवाणीं बुबुधुस्ते गतस्मयाः ॥ यक्षेश्वरम्प्रणेमुश्च तुष्टुवुश्च तमीश्वरम् ॥ ३३ ॥
iti zrutvA nabhovANIM bubudhuste gatasmayAH ॥ yakSezvarampraNemuzca tuSTuvuzca tamIzvaram ॥ 33 ॥
O hearing the celestial voice they became divested of their arrogance. They had realised Yakṣeśvara. They bowed to and eulogised him.

देवा ऊचुः ॥ देवदेव महादेव सर्वगर्वापहारक॥ यक्षेश्वरमहालील माया तेत्यद्भुता प्रभो॥ ३४॥
devA UcuH ॥ devadeva mahAdeva sarvagarvApahAraka॥ yakSezvaramahAlIla mAyA tetyadbhutA prabho॥ 34॥
The gods said:— O lord of the gods, the dispeller of arrogance, O Yakṣeśvara of great sports, O lord, your Māyā is wonderful.

मोहिता माययाद्यापि तव यक्षस्वरूपिणः ॥ सगर्वमभिभाषन्तस्त्वत्पुरो हि पृथङ्मयाः॥ ३५॥
mohitA mAyayAdyApi tava yakSasvarUpiNaH ॥ sagarvamabhibhASantastvatpuro hi pRthaGmayAH॥ 35॥
Even now we are deluded by this Māyā of yours in the form of Yakṣa. Hence, separated from you we began to speak arrogantly before you.

इदानीं ज्ञानमायातन्तवैव कृपया प्रभो॥ कर्ता हर्ता च भर्ता च त्वमेवान्यो न शंकर ॥ ३६॥
idAnIM jJAnamAyAtantavaiva kRpayA prabho॥ kartA hartA ca bhartA ca tvamevAnyo na zaMkara ॥ 36॥
O lord, thanks to your grace, alone, knowledge has dawned on us. O Śiva, you alone are the creator, sustainer and annihilator, none else.

त्वमेव सर्वशक्तीनां सर्वेषां हि प्रवर्तकः ॥ निवर्तकश्च सर्वेशः परमात्माव्ययोऽद्वयः ॥ ३७ ॥
tvameva sarvazaktInAM sarveSAM hi pravartakaH ॥ nivartakazca sarvezaH paramAtmAvyayo'dvayaH ॥ 37 ॥
You alone are the initiator and the withdrawer of all powers. You are lord of all, the great soul, the unchanging, the unrivalled.

यक्षेश्वरस्वरूपेण सर्वेषां नो मदो हृतः ॥ इतो मन्यामहे तत्तेनुग्रहो हि कृपालुना ॥ ३८ ॥
yakSezvarasvarUpeNa sarveSAM no mado hRtaH ॥ ito manyAmahe tattenugraho hi kRpAlunA ॥ 38 ॥
In the form of Yakṣeśvara you have removed our arrogance. With sympathy and kindness we think we have been blessed by you.

अथो स यक्षनाथोऽनुगृह्य वै सकलान् सुरान् ॥ विबोध्य विविधैर्वाक्यैस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥ ३९ ॥
atho sa yakSanAtho'nugRhya vai sakalAn surAn ॥ vibodhya vividhairvAkyaistatraivAntaradhIyata ॥ 39 ॥
Then the Yakṣanātha blessed the gods enlightened them with various instructions and vanished there itself.

इत्थं स वर्णितः शम्भोरवतारः सुखावहः ॥ यक्षेश्वराख्यस्सुखदस्सतान्तुष्टोऽभयंकरः ॥ ४० ॥
itthaM sa varNitaH zambhoravatAraH sukhAvahaH ॥ yakSezvarAkhyassukhadassatAntuSTo'bhayaMkaraH ॥ 40 ॥
Thus has been described the pleasant incarnation of Śiva called Yakṣeśvara that bestows pleasure, satisfaction and protection of the good.

इदमाख्यानममलं सर्वगर्वापहारकम् ॥ सतां सुशान्तिदन्नित्यं भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं नृणाम् ॥ ४१ ॥
idamAkhyAnamamalaM sarvagarvApahArakam ॥ satAM suzAntidannityaM bhuktimuktipradaM nRNAm ॥ 41 ॥
The narrative is sacred; it dispels all arrogance; it bestows peace, worldly pleasure and salvation upon all good men.

य इदं शृणुयाद्भक्त्या श्रावयेद्वा सुधीः पुमान् ॥ सर्वकामानवाप्नोति ततश्च लभते गतिम् ॥ ४२॥
ya idaM zRNuyAdbhaktyA zrAvayedvA sudhIH pumAn ॥ sarvakAmAnavApnoti tatazca labhate gatim ॥ 42॥
The intelligent man who listens to or narrates this with devotion attains all desires. Then he attains salvation.
