Nandīśvara said:— On hearing the revelation of Nārada, Viśvānara and his wife considered it a terrible bolt from the blue.

hA hatosmIti vacasA hRdayaM samatADayat ॥ mUrcchAmavApa mahatIM putrazokasamAkulaH ॥ 2 ॥
He shouted “O I am doomed!” He beat his chest. Excited by the grief about his son he fell into a great swoon.

The grief-stricken Śuciṣmatī too lamented much. Her senses were benumbed and she. lamented aloud.

श्रुत्वार्त्तनादमिति विश्वनरोपि मोहं हित्वोत्थितः किमिति किंत्विति किं किमेतत्॥ उच्चैर्वदन् गृहपतिः क्व स मे बहिस्थः प्राणोन्तरात्मनिलयस्सकलेंद्रियेशः ॥ ४ ॥
zrutvArttanAdamiti vizvanaropi mohaM hitvotthitaH kimiti kiMtviti kiM kimetat॥ uccairvadan gRhapatiH kva sa me bahisthaH prANontarAtmanilayassakaleMdriyezaH ॥ 4 ॥
On hearing her loud lamentation, Viśvānara woke up from his swoon. He cried aloud “What is this? What is this? Where is Gṛhapati my vital breath who stands outside and who is the lord of all the senses lodged within me.

On seeing his parents excessively grieved, the boy Gṛhapati, a part of Śiva, smiled and said.

gRhapatiruvAca ॥ he mAtastAta kiM jAtaM kAraNantadvadAdhunA ॥ kimarthaM rudito'tyarthaM trAsastAdRkkuto hi vAm ॥ 6 ॥
Gṛhapati said:— O Mother, O Father, what is the reason? Please tell me now. Why do both of you cry? What and whence is such a fright for you?

na mAM kRtavapustrANambhavaccaraNareNubhiH ॥ kAlaH kalayituM zakto varAkIM ciJcalAlpikA ॥ 7॥
Time and pitiable fickle existence cannot affect me, whose body is guarded by the dust-particles of your feet.

प्रतिज्ञां शृणुतान्तातौ यदि वान्तनयो ह्यहम् ॥ करिष्येहं तथा येन मृत्युस्त्रस्तो भविष्यति ॥ ८ ॥
pratijJAM zRNutAntAtau yadi vAntanayo hyaham ॥ kariSyehaM tathA yena mRtyustrasto bhaviSyati ॥ 8 ॥
O my parents, please listen to my vow. If I am your true son, I will do that whereby death itself will be terrified.

मृत्युंजयं समाराध्य गर्वज्ञं सर्वदं सताम् ॥ जपिष्यामि महाकालं सत्यं तातौ वदाम्यहम्॥ ९॥
mRtyuMjayaM samArAdhya garvajJaM sarvadaM satAm ॥ japiSyAmi mahAkAlaM satyaM tAtau vadAmyaham॥ 9॥
I shall propitiate lord Śiva, the conqueror of death, the omniscient and the bestower of all to the good. I shall perform the Japa of Mahākāla. O parents, I am telling you the truth.

Nandīśvara said:— On hearing his words the aged branmin couple were freed of their distress by the untimely showers of nectar. They then spoke.

dvijadampatI UcatuH ॥ punarbrUhi punarbrUhi kIdRkkIdRk punarvada ॥ kAlaH kalayitunnAlaM varAkI caJcalAsti kA॥ 11॥
The brahmin couple said:— Say again. Say again. What is it? What is it? Speak again. Time and pitiable fickle existence will not affect you?

आवयोस्तापनाशाय महोपायस्त्वयेरितः ॥ मृत्युंजयाख्यदेवस्य समाराधनलक्षणः॥ १२॥
AvayostApanAzAya mahopAyastvayeritaH ॥ mRtyuMjayAkhyadevasya samArAdhanalakSaNaH॥ 12॥
A great means has been suggested by you to dispel our distress, that of the propitiation of lord Śiva, the conqueror of death.

तद्वच्च शरणं शम्भोर्नातः परतरं हि तत्॥ मनोरथपथातीत कारिणः पापहारिणः ॥ १३॥
tadvacca zaraNaM zambhornAtaH parataraM hi tat॥ manorathapathAtIta kAriNaH pApahAriNaH ॥ 13॥
The same is the result for those who seek refuge in Śiva who dispels sins and does everything beyond the path of our desire. There is nothing better than this.

किन्न श्रुतन्त्वया तात श्वेतकेतुं यथा पुरा ॥ पाशितं कालपाशेन ररक्ष त्रिपुरान्तकः ॥ १४ ॥
kinna zrutantvayA tAta zvetaketuM yathA purA ॥ pAzitaM kAlapAzena rarakSa tripurAntakaH ॥ 14 ॥
O dear, haven’t you heard that the slayer of the Tripuras protected, in days of yore, Śvetaketu who was bound by the noose of Kāla?

शिलादतनयं मृत्युग्रस्तमष्टाब्दमात्रकम् ॥ शिवो निजजनञ्चक्रे नन्दिनं विश्वनंदिनम् ॥ १५ ॥
zilAdatanayaM mRtyugrastamaSTAbdamAtrakam ॥ zivo nijajanaJcakre nandinaM vizvanaMdinam ॥ 15 ॥
When Śilāda’s son was threatened by death, when he was only eight, Śiva saved him and made him his own attendant as Nandin, the delighter of the whole universe.

क्षीरोदमथनोद्भूतं प्रलयानलसन्निभम् ॥ पीत्वा हलाहलं घोरमरक्षद्भुवनत्रयम् ॥ १६ ॥
kSIrodamathanodbhUtaM pralayAnalasannibham ॥ pItvA halAhalaM ghoramarakSadbhuvanatrayam ॥ 16 ॥
He protected the three worlds by drinking off the terrible poison as fearful as the fire at the hour of dissolution, when it was produced at the churning of the milk-ocean.

जलंधरं महादर्पं हृतत्रैलोक्यसम्पदम् ॥ रुचिरांगुष्ठरेखोत्थ चक्रेण निजघान यः ॥ १७ ॥
jalaMdharaM mahAdarpaM hRtatrailokyasampadam ॥ rucirAMguSTharekhottha cakreNa nijaghAna yaH ॥ 17 ॥
With the wheel raised up by the line drawn with his beautiful toe he killed the haughty Jalandhara who had deprived the three worlds of their pleasure.

य एकेषु निपातोत्थज्वलनैस्त्रिपुरम्पुरा ॥ त्रैलोक्यैश्वर्यसम्मूढं शोषयामास भानुना ॥ १८ ॥
ya ekeSu nipAtotthajvalanaistripurampurA ॥ trailokyaizvaryasammUDhaM zoSayAmAsa bhAnunA ॥ 18 ॥
He burnt the Tripuras, who were haughty and deluded by their lordship of the three worlds, by means of the blazing fires emanating from the fall of a single arrow.

कामं दृष्टिनिपातेन त्रैलोक्यविजयोर्जितम् ॥ निनायानंगपदवीं वीक्ष्यमाणेष्वजादिषु ॥ १९॥
kAmaM dRSTinipAtena trailokyavijayorjitam ॥ ninAyAnaMgapadavIM vIkSyamANeSvajAdiSu ॥ 19॥
Even as Brahmā and others were watching, he reduced Kāma to ashes by a single glance, Kāma whose strength had been enhanced by his conquest of the three worlds.

तम्ब्रह्माद्यैककर्तारम्मेघवाहनमच्युतम् ॥ प्रयाहि पुत्र शरणं विश्वरक्षामणिं शिवम् ॥ २०॥
tambrahmAdyaikakartArammeghavAhanamacyutam ॥ prayAhi putra zaraNaM vizvarakSAmaNiM zivam ॥ 20॥
O son, seek refuge in that Śiva, the amulet of protection of the universe, the sole creator of Indra, Acyuta, Brahmā and others.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ pitroranujJAmprApyeti praNamya caraNau tayoH ॥ prAdakSiNyamupAvRtya bahvAzvAsya viniryayau ॥ 21 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— Thus he secured the permission of his parents. He bowed at their feet and circumambulated them. He then pacified them and started.

samprApya kAzIM duSprApAmbrahmanArAyaNAdibhiH ॥ mahAsaMvarttasantApahantrIM vizvezapAlitAm ॥ 22 ॥
Having reached Kāśī which is difficult to reach by Brahma Narayana and others She destroys the sorrows of the great cycle and is protected by the Lord of the universe.

स्वर्धुन्या हारयष्ट्येव राजिता कण्ठभूमिषु ॥ विचित्रगुणशालिन्या हरपत्न्या विराजिताम् ॥ २३॥
svardhunyA hArayaSTyeva rAjitA kaNThabhUmiSu ॥ vicitraguNazAlinyA harapatnyA virAjitAm ॥ 23॥
She was shining like a necklace stick on the ground around her neck She was illuminated by the wife of Lord Śiva endowed with wonderful virtues.

tatra prApya sa viprezaH prAgyayau maNikarNikAm ॥ tatra snAtvA vidhAnena dRSTvA vizvezvaramprabhum ॥ 24॥
Having reached there the lord of the brahmins proceeded eastwards to Manikarnika Having bathed there in accordance with the prescribed rituals he saw Lord Visvesvara.

साञ्जलिर्नतशीर्षोऽसौ महानन्दान्वितस्सुधीः ॥ त्रैलोक्यप्राणसन्त्राणकारिणम्प्रणनाम ह ॥ २५ ॥
sAJjalirnatazIrSo'sau mahAnandAnvitassudhIH ॥ trailokyaprANasantrANakAriNampraNanAma ha ॥ 25 ॥
He bowed his head with folded hands and was intelligent with great joy. He bowed down to him who saves the lives of the three worlds.

AlokyAlokya talliMgaM tutoSa hRdaye muhuH ॥ paramAnaMdakaMdADhyaM sphuTametanna saMzayaH ॥ 26 ॥
Seeing that phallic image of Śiva again and again he was delighted in his heart and thought—“Undoubtedly this is possessed of great bliss.”

aho na matto dhanyosti trailokye sacarAcare ॥ yadadrAkSiSamadyAhaM zrImadvizvezvaraM vibhum ॥ 27 ॥
Hā, there is none more blessed than I in the three worlds consisting of the mobile and immobile beings since today I have seen here the lord Viśveśvara.

मम भाग्योदयायैव नारदेन महर्षिणा ॥ पुरागत्य तथोक्तं यत्कृतकृत्योस्म्यहन्ततः ॥ २८ ॥
mama bhAgyodayAyaiva nAradena maharSiNA ॥ purAgatya tathoktaM yatkRtakRtyosmyahantataH ॥ 28 ॥
It is only to enhance my good fortune that sage Nārada formerly came and told me that. I am therefore very much contented.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityAnandAmRtarasairvidhAya sa hi pAraNam ॥ tatazzubhehni saMsthApya liMgaM sarvvahitapradam ॥ 29 ॥
Nandishwara said. Thus he performed the Parana with the nectar of bliss. Then on an auspicious day he installed the Linga which bestows all benefits.

jagrAha niyamAnghorAn duSkarAnakRtAtmabhiH ॥ aSTottarazataiH kumbhaiH pUrNairgaMgAmbhasA zubhaiH ॥ 30 ॥
opted dreadful regulations that were difficult for the ungrateful There were one hundred eighty pots filled with auspicious water from the Ganges.

संस्नाप्य वाससा पूतः पूतात्मा प्रत्यहं शिवम् ॥ नीलोत्पलमयीम्मालां समर्पयति सोऽन्वहम् ॥ ३१ ॥
saMsnApya vAsasA pUtaH pUtAtmA pratyahaM zivam ॥ nIlotpalamayImmAlAM samarpayati so'nvaham ॥ 31 ॥
He took a bath and purified himself with his clothes and purified himself every day in the auspicious place. He offers her a garland of blue lotuses every day.

अष्टाधिकसहस्रैस्तु सुमनोभिर्विनिर्मिताम् ॥ स पक्षे वाथ वा मासे कन्दमूलफलाशनः ॥ ३२ ॥
aSTAdhikasahasraistu sumanobhirvinirmitAm ॥ sa pakSe vAtha vA mAse kandamUlaphalAzanaH ॥ 32 ॥
He wreathed the garlands with a thousand and eight flowers. He ate fruits, roots and bulbous roots once in a fortnight or a month.

शीर्णपर्णाशनैर्धीरः षण्मासं सम्बभूव सः ॥ षण्मासं वायुभक्षोऽभूत्षण्मासं जल बिन्दुभुक् ॥ ३३ ॥
zIrNaparNAzanairdhIraH SaNmAsaM sambabhUva saH ॥ SaNmAsaM vAyubhakSo'bhUtSaNmAsaM jala bindubhuk ॥ 33 ॥
The courageous devotee spent six months by eating withered leaves. The remaining six months he spent drinking drops of water or simply breathing.

एवं वर्षवयस्तस्य व्यतिक्रान्तं महात्मनः ॥ शिवैकमनसो विप्रास्तप्यमानस्य नारद ॥ ३४ ॥
evaM varSavayastasya vyatikrAntaM mahAtmanaH ॥ zivaikamanaso viprAstapyamAnasya nArada ॥ 34 ॥
O Brahmins, thus a year in the life of that noble soul passed by, performing the penance with the devoted mind resting only in Śiva.

जन्मतो द्वादशे वर्षे तद्वचो नारदेरितम् ॥ सत्यं करिष्यन्निव तमभ्यगात्कुलिशायुधः ॥ ३५ ॥
janmato dvAdaze varSe tadvaco nAraderitam ॥ satyaM kariSyanniva tamabhyagAtkulizAyudhaH ॥ 35 ॥
In the twelfth year of his life, the thunderbolt, armed Indra approached him as if fulfilling the utterance of Nārada.

uvAca ca varaM brUhi dadmi tvanmanasi sthitam ॥ ahaM zatakraturvipra prasannosmi zubhavrataiH ॥ 36 ॥
He said—“O brahmin, I am Indra, I am delighted at your holy rites. Ask for the boon you wish to have. I shall give you whatever desire you have in your mind.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityAkarNya mahendrasya vAkyammunikumArakaH ॥ uvAca madhurandhIraH kIrtayanmadhurAkSaram ॥ 37 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— On hearing the words of lord Indra, the son of the sage spoke these words boldly and sweetly.

गृहपतिरुवाच ॥ मघवन् वृत्रशत्रो त्वां जाने कुलिशपाणिनम् ॥ नाहं वृणे वरन्त्वत्तश्शंकरो वरदोऽस्ति मे ॥ ३८ ॥
gRhapatiruvAca ॥ maghavan vRtrazatro tvAM jAne kulizapANinam ॥ nAhaM vRNe varantvattazzaMkaro varado'sti me ॥ 38 ॥
Gṛhapati said:— “O Indra, O enemy of Vṛtra, I know you as armed with the thunderbolt. I do not want a boon from you. Śiva is the granter of boon to me.”

इन्द्र उवाच ॥ न मत्तश्शङ्करस्त्वन्यो देवदेवोऽस्म्यहं शिशो ॥ विहाय बालिशत्वं त्वं वरं याचस्व मा चिरम् ॥ ३९॥

The fire is certainly the immanent soul of man. Even morsels of flesh it will digest in the stomach, but not the muscles of women.

The incense, the lights, the food offerings, milk, curd, ghee and sugarcane juice—all these go unto the dwellers of heaven when offered into the fire here.
