sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ nandIzvara mahAprAjJa vijJAtantadanantaram ॥ mamopari kRpAM kRtvA prItyA tvantadvadAdhunA ॥ 1॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O Nandīśvara, O intelligent one, this is understood. Take pity on me and tell me now lovingly what happened thereafter.

Nandīśvara said:— Thus admonished by Vīrabhadra, the Man-lion (Nṛsiṃha)be came furious. He roared and began to seize him with force.

अत्रान्तरे महाघोरं प्रत्यक्षभयकारणम् ॥ गगनव्यापि दुर्धर्षं शैवतेजस्समुद्भवम् ॥ ३॥
atrAntare mahAghoraM pratyakSabhayakAraNam ॥ gaganavyApi durdharSaM zaivatejassamudbhavam ॥ 3॥
In the meantime, the splendour of Śiva rose up unbearably enveloping the sky all around. It was terrible and cause for imminent fear.

वीरभद्रस्य तद्रूमदृश्यन्तु ततः क्षणात् ॥ तद्वै हिरण्मयं सौम्यं न सौरन्नाग्निसम्भवम् ॥ ४॥
vIrabhadrasya tadrUmadRzyantu tataH kSaNAt ॥ tadvai hiraNmayaM saumyaM na saurannAgnisambhavam ॥ 4॥
Let that room of Veerabhadra be visible from there instantly That is the golden, gentle, and not the sun’s food and fire.

न तडिच्चन्द्रसदृशमनौपम्यम्महेश्वरम् ॥ तदा तेजांसि सर्वाणि तस्मिँल्लीनानि शंकरे ॥ ५॥
na taDiccandrasadRzamanaupamyammahezvaram ॥ tadA tejAMsi sarvANi tasmi~llInAni zaMkare ॥ 5॥
There is no incomparable Lord like lightning or the moon. At that time all the luminaries were absorbed in that Lord Śiva.

न तद्व्योम महत्तेजो व्यक्तान्तश्चाभवत्ततः ॥ रुद्रसाधारणं चैव चिह्नितं विकृताकृति ॥ ६॥
na tadvyoma mahattejo vyaktAntazcAbhavattataH ॥ rudrasAdhAraNaM caiva cihnitaM vikRtAkRti ॥ 6॥
That great splendour was not of the sky too. Thereafter its middle became clearly manifested in the form characteristic of Rudra of deformed shape.

ततस्संहाररूपेण सुव्यक्तं परमेश्वरः ॥ पश्यतां सर्वदेवानां जयशब्दादिमंगलैः ॥ ७॥
tatassaMhArarUpeNa suvyaktaM paramezvaraH ॥ pazyatAM sarvadevAnAM jayazabdAdimaMgalaiH ॥ 7॥
Even as all the gods stood watching with the auspicious shouts of victory, Lord Śiva became manifest in the form the Annihilator.

सहस्रबाहुर्जटिलश्चन्द्रार्द्धकृतशेखरः ॥ समृद्धोग्रशरीरेण पक्षाभ्याञ्चञ्चुना द्विजः ॥ ८॥
sahasrabAhurjaTilazcandrArddhakRtazekharaH ॥ samRddhograzarIreNa pakSAbhyAJcaJcunA dvijaH ॥ 8॥
He had a thousand hands and wore matted hair. His head was adorned by the crescent moon. He appeared like a bird with wings and beak. His body was fierce and fully developed.

अतितीक्ष्णो महादंष्ट्रो वज्रतुल्यनखायुधः ॥ कण्ठे कालो महाबाहुश्चतुष्पाद्वह्निसन्निभः ॥ ९॥
atitIkSNo mahAdaMSTro vajratulyanakhAyudhaH ॥ kaNThe kAlo mahAbAhuzcatuSpAdvahnisannibhaH ॥ 9॥
His fangs were very sharp. Adamantine daws were his weapons. His neck was black in colour. He had huge arms and four legs. He was blazing like fire.

युगान्तोद्यतजीमूतभीमगम्भीरनिस्वनः॥ महाकुपितकृत्याग्निव्यावृत्तनयनत्रयः॥ १०॥
yugAntodyatajImUtabhImagambhIranisvanaH॥ mahAkupitakRtyAgnivyAvRttanayanatrayaH॥ 10॥
His voice was resonant and terrible like the rumbling sound of the clouds that gather at the end of a Yuga. His three eyes were as wide and blazing as the fire of the evil spirit of great fury.

spaSTadaMSTrAdharoSThazca huMkArasaMyuto haraH ॥ IdRgvidhasvarUpazca hyugra AvirbabhUva ha ॥ 11॥
His fangs and lips were clearly visible. He was producing a hissing sound of Huṃkāra. Śiva of such a form appeared in sight.

अरिस्तद्दर्शनादेव विनष्टबलविक्रमः ॥ बिभ्रद्धाम सहस्रांशोरधः खद्योतविभ्रमम् ॥ १२ ॥
aristaddarzanAdeva vinaSTabalavikramaH ॥ bibhraddhAma sahasrAMzoradhaH khadyotavibhramam ॥ 12 ॥
At his very vision Viṣṇu lost his strength and exploit. He assumed a lustre of the flickering glow-worm beneath the sun.

अथ विभ्रम्य पक्षाभ्यां नाभिपादान्विदारयन् ॥ पादान्बबंध पुच्छेन बाहुभ्याम्बाहु मण्डलम् ॥ १३॥
atha vibhramya pakSAbhyAM nAbhipAdAnvidArayan ॥ pAdAnbabaMdha pucchena bAhubhyAmbAhu maNDalam ॥ 13॥
Then he turned around and tore his navel and legs with his wings. He tied his legs with his tail and circled his arms with his arms.

भिन्दन्नुरसि बाहुभ्यान्निजग्राह हरो हरिम् ॥ ततो जगाम गगनन्देवैस्सह महर्षिभिः ॥ १४॥
bhindannurasi bAhubhyAnnijagrAha haro harim ॥ tato jagAma gaganandevaissaha maharSibhiH ॥ 14॥
Piercing his chest with his arms, Lord Hari seized him. Then he went to the sky with the gods and great sages.

sahasaivAbhayAdviSNuM sa hi zyena ivoragam ॥ utkSipyotkSipya saMgRhya nipAtya ca nipAtya ca ॥ 15 ॥
Suddenly out of fear he led Visnu like a hawk to a snake He threw it up, held it up, he threw it down, and he threw it down.

उड्डीयोड्डीय भगवान्पक्षघातविमोहितम् ॥ हरीं हरस्तं वृषभं विवेशानन्त ईश्वरः ॥ १६॥
uDDIyoDDIya bhagavAnpakSaghAtavimohitam ॥ harIM harastaM vRSabhaM vivezAnanta IzvaraH ॥ 16॥
The Lord flew and flew, bewildered by the blow of his wings. The infinite Supreme Personality of Godhead entered the bull’s body.

अनुयान्तं सुरास्सर्वे नमोवाक्येन तुष्टुवुः ॥ प्रणेमुस्सादरं प्रीत्या ब्रह्माद्याश्च मुनीश्वराः ॥ १७ ॥
anuyAntaM surAssarve namovAkyena tuSTuvuH ॥ praNemussAdaraM prItyA brahmAdyAzca munIzvarAH ॥ 17 ॥
All the gods followed him eulogising him with the words of obeisance. Brahmā and other sages bowed to him with reverence and love.

नीयमानः परवशो दीनवक्त्रः कृताञ्जलिः ॥ तुष्टाव परमेशानं हरिस्तं ललिताक्षरैः ॥ १८ ॥
nIyamAnaH paravazo dInavaktraH kRtAJjaliH ॥ tuSTAva paramezAnaM haristaM lalitAkSaraiH ॥ 18 ॥
Being led thus Viṣṇu was helpless. His face was pallid and sorrowful. With palms joined in reverence he eulogised Lord Śiva with prayers of simple words.

नाम्नामष्टशतेनैव स्तुत्वा ताम्मृडमेव च ॥ पुनश्च प्रार्थयामास नृसिंहः शरभेश्वरम् ॥ १९॥
nAmnAmaSTazatenaiva stutvA tAmmRDameva ca ॥ punazca prArthayAmAsa nRsiMhaH zarabhezvaram ॥ 19॥
After eulogising Mṛḍa with the hundred and eight names of the lord, Nṛsiṃha requested lord Śarabha again.

यदायदा ममाज्ञेयं मतिस्स्याद्गर्वदूषिता ॥ तदातदाऽपनेतव्या त्वयैव परमेश्वर ॥ २०॥
yadAyadA mamAjJeyaM matissyAdgarvadUSitA ॥ tadAtadA'panetavyA tvayaiva paramezvara ॥ 20॥
“O great lord, whenever my ignorant mind becomes defiled by arrogance, it shall be removed by you alone.”

nandIzvara uvAca॥ evaM vijJApayanprItyA zaGkaraM narakesarI॥ natvA'zakto'bhavadviSNu jIvitAnta parAjitaH ॥ 21॥
Nandīśvara said:— Thus saying with love to Śiva, the Man-lion turned submissive and bowed to him. Viṣṇu was utterly defeated and came to the end of his life

तद्वक्त्रं शेषगात्रान्तं कृत्वा सर्वस्वविग्रहम्॥ शक्तियुक्तं तदीयांगं वीरभद्रः क्षणात्ततः ॥ २२॥
tadvaktraM zeSagAtrAntaM kRtvA sarvasvavigraham॥ zaktiyuktaM tadIyAMgaM vIrabhadraH kSaNAttataH ॥ 22॥
Within a trice Vīrabhadra made his powerful body powerless and dead.

नन्दीश्वर उवाच॥ अथ ब्रह्मादयो देवाश्शारभं रूपमास्थितम्॥ तुष्टुवुः शंकरं देवं सर्वलोकैकशंकरम् ॥ २३॥
nandIzvara uvAca॥ atha brahmAdayo devAzzArabhaM rUpamAsthitam॥ tuSTuvuH zaMkaraM devaM sarvalokaikazaMkaram ॥ 23॥
Nandīśvara said:— Then Brahmā and other gods eulogised lord Śiva who had assumed the form of a Śarabha and who was the sole benefactor of all the worlds.

॥ देवा ऊचुः ॥ ब्रह्मविष्ण्विन्द्रचन्द्रादिसुराः सर्वे महर्षयः ॥ दितिजाद्याः सम्प्रसूतास्त्वत्तस्सर्वे महेश्वर ॥ २४॥
॥ devA UcuH ॥ brahmaviSNvindracandrAdisurAH sarve maharSayaH ॥ ditijAdyAH samprasUtAstvattassarve mahezvara ॥ 24॥
The gods said:— O lord Śiva, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Indra, the Moon, the gods, the sages, and the Daityas are born of you.

ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेन्द्राश्च सूर्याद्यानसुरान्सुराम् ॥ त्वं वै सृजसि पास्यत्सि त्वमेव सकलेश्वरः ॥ २५॥
brahmaviSNumahendrAzca sUryAdyAnasurAnsurAm ॥ tvaM vai sRjasi pAsyatsi tvameva sakalezvaraH ॥ 25॥
O lord of all, you alone create and protect Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Indra, the sun and others, the gods and Asuras and you alone devour them.

यतो हरसि संसारं हर इत्युच्यते बुधैः॥ निगृहीतो हरिर्यस्माद्धर इत्युच्यते बुधैः॥ २६॥
yato harasi saMsAraM hara ityucyate budhaiH॥ nigRhIto hariryasmAddhara ityucyate budhaiH॥ 26॥
Since you annihilate the world, you are called Hara by the learned. Since Viṣṇu was curbed and caught hold of by you, you are called Hara by the learned.

यतो बिभर्षि सकलं विभज्य तनुमष्टधा॥ अतोऽस्मान्पाहि भगवन् सुरादानैरभीप्सितैः॥ २७॥
yato bibharSi sakalaM vibhajya tanumaSTadhA॥ ato'smAnpAhi bhagavan surAdAnairabhIpsitaiH॥ 27॥
Since you support and hold every thing after dividing your body into eight, O lord, protect us, the gods, by means of the desired gifts.

त्वं महापुरुषः शम्भुः सर्वेशस्सुरनायकः ॥ निःस्वात्मा निर्विकारात्मा परब्रह्म सतां गतिः॥ २८॥
tvaM mahApuruSaH zambhuH sarvezassuranAyakaH ॥ niHsvAtmA nirvikArAtmA parabrahma satAM gatiH॥ 28॥
You are the great Puruṣa, Śiva, lord of all, leader of the gods, the soul of the indigent, of a mind without aberrations. You are the great Brahman, the goal of the good.

दीनबन्धुर्दया सिन्धुऽरद्भुतोतिः परात्मदृक्॥ प्राज्ञो विराट्विभुस्सत्यः सच्चिदानन्दलक्षणः॥ २९॥
dInabandhurdayA sindhu'radbhutotiH parAtmadRk॥ prAjJo virATvibhussatyaH saccidAnandalakSaNaH॥ 29॥
You are the kinsman of the distressed, the ocean of mercy, of wonderful sports, the vision of the great soul, the intelligent, the Immense Cosmic Being, the all-pervasive, the truth, the Existence, knowledge and Bliss as the characteristics.

॥ nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacaH zambhurdevAnAM paramezvaraH ॥ uvAca tAn surAndevamaharSIMzca purAtanAn ॥ 30 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— On hearing these words of the gods, Śiva, the great God, spoke to the gods and the great ancient sages.

यथा जलं जले क्षिप्तं क्षीरे क्षीरं घृते घृतम् ॥ एक एव तदा विष्णुः शिवे लीनो न चान्यथा ॥ ३१ ॥
yathA jalaM jale kSiptaM kSIre kSIraM ghRte ghRtam ॥ eka eva tadA viSNuH zive lIno na cAnyathA ॥ 31 ॥
Just as water poured into water, or milk poured into milk, or ghee poured into ghee becomes one with those things, so also Viṣṇu is merged into Śiva, not otherwise.

एको विष्णुर्नृसिंहात्मा सदर्पश्च महाबलः ॥ जगत्संहारकरणे प्रवृत्तो नरकेसरी ॥ ३२ ॥
eko viSNurnRsiMhAtmA sadarpazca mahAbalaH ॥ jagatsaMhArakaraNe pravRtto narakesarI ॥ 32 ॥
It was Viṣṇu alone in the form of the Man-lion, haughty and strong, engaged in the activity of annihilating the universe.

प्रार्थनीयो नमस्तस्मै मद्भक्तैस्सिद्धिकारिभिः ॥ मद्भक्तप्रवरश्चैव मद्भक्तवर दायकः ॥ ३३ ॥
prArthanIyo namastasmai madbhaktaissiddhikAribhiH ॥ madbhaktapravarazcaiva madbhaktavara dAyakaH ॥ 33 ॥
He shall be prayed and bowed by my devotees aspiring achievements. He is the foremost of my devotees and the granter of boons.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ etAvaduktvA bhagavAn pakSirAjo mahAbalaH ॥ pazyatAM sarvadevAnAntatraivAntaradhIyata ॥ 34 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— After saying this, the lordly king of birds of great strength, vanished there itself even as all the gods were watching.

वीरभद्रोऽपि भगवान्गणाध्यक्षो महाबलः ॥ नृसिंहकृत्तिं निष्कृष्य समादाय ययौ गिरिम् ॥ ३५ ॥
vIrabhadro'pi bhagavAngaNAdhyakSo mahAbalaH ॥ nRsiMhakRttiM niSkRSya samAdAya yayau girim ॥ 35 ॥
Lord Vīrabhadra, the leader of the Gaṇas, of great strength, peeled off the hide of the Man-lion and went to the mountain taking it with him.

नृसिंहकृत्तिवसनस्तदाप्रभृति शंकरः ॥ तद्वक्त्रं मुण्डमालायां नायकत्वेन कल्पितम् ॥ ३६ ॥
nRsiMhakRttivasanastadAprabhRti zaMkaraH ॥ tadvaktraM muNDamAlAyAM nAyakatvena kalpitam ॥ 36 ॥
From that time Śiva began to wear the hide of the Man-lion. His head was the leading bead in his necklace of skulls.

ततो देवा निरातङ्का कीर्त्तयन्तः कथामिमाम् ॥ विस्मयोत्फुल्लनयना जग्मुः सर्वे यथागतम् ॥ ३७ ॥
tato devA nirAtaGkA kIrttayantaH kathAmimAm ॥ vismayotphullanayanA jagmuH sarve yathAgatam ॥ 37 ॥
Then the gods freed from their distress began to sing the glory of this story. With their eyes blooming with wonder they returned the way they came.

य इदम्परमाख्यानं पुण्यं वेदरसान्वितम् ॥ पठति शृणुयाच्चैव सर्व्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् ॥ ३८ ॥
ya idamparamAkhyAnaM puNyaM vedarasAnvitam ॥ paThati zRNuyAccaiva sarvvAnkAmAnavApnuyAt ॥ 38 ॥
He who reads or listens to the great narrative, which being sacred has the flavour of the Vedas, will realise all his desires.

धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यमारोग्यम्पुष्टिवर्द्धनम् ॥ सर्वविघ्रप्रशमनं सर्वव्याधिविनाशनम् ॥ ३९ ॥
dhanyaM yazasyamAyuSyamArogyampuSTivarddhanam ॥ sarvavighraprazamanaM sarvavyAdhivinAzanam ॥ 39 ॥
This narrative is conducive to wealth, fame, longevity and health. It increases prosperity, subdues obstacles and quells ailments.

दुःखप्रशमनं वाञ्छासिद्धिदं मंगलालयम् ॥ अपमृत्युहरं बुद्धिप्रदं शत्रुविनाशनम् ॥ ४०॥
duHkhaprazamanaM vAJchAsiddhidaM maMgalAlayam ॥ apamRtyuharaM buddhipradaM zatruvinAzanam ॥ 40॥
It subdues misery, yields the fruits of desires and is the abode of auspicious features. It removes premature death, confers intelligence and destroys enemies.

idantu zarabhAkAraM paraM rUpampinAkinaH ॥ prakAzanIyaM bhakteSu zaMkarasya careSu vai ॥ 41 ॥
This great form of Śiva in the form of Śarabha shall be made public only among the leading devotees of Śiva.

taireva paThitavyaM ca zrotavyaM ca zivAtmabhiH ॥ navadhA bhaktidaM divyamantaHkaraNabuddhidam ॥ 42॥
This shall be read and listened to only by them with their soul dedicated to Śiva. It then confers the ninefold devotion. It is divine. It purifies the inner mind and sense.

zivotsaveSu sarveSu caturdazyaSTamISu ca ॥ paThetpratiSThAkAle tu zivasannidhikAraNam ॥ 43 ॥
This shall be read during the festivals of Śiva, during the eighth and fourteenth Tithis, and at the installation of the idol. It then causes the presence of Śiva.

Thieves, tigers, men and lions are afraid of kings. In other calamities, earthquakes, floods and other rains of dust.

ulkApAte mahAvAte vinAvRSTyativRSTiSu ॥ paThedyaH prayato vidvAJ zivabhakto dRDhavrataH ॥ 45 ॥
In the event of a meteor shower in a strong wind without rain or in heavy rains He who recites this mantra with attention, learned, devoted to Lord Śiva and firm in his vows.

यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि निष्कामो व्रतमैश्वरम् ॥ रुद्रलोकं समासाद्य रुद्रस्यानुचरो भवेत् ॥ ४६ ॥
yaH paThecchRNuyAdvApi niSkAmo vratamaizvaram ॥ rudralokaM samAsAdya rudrasyAnucaro bhavet ॥ 46 ॥
He who reads or listens to this without any specific desire and performs the rites of Śiva attains Rudra’s region and becomes a follower of Rudra.

रुद्रलोकमनुप्राप्य रुद्रेण सह मोदते ॥ ततस्सायुज्यमाप्नोति शिवस्य कृपया मुने ॥ ४७ ॥
rudralokamanuprApya rudreNa saha modate ॥ tatassAyujyamApnoti zivasya kRpayA mune ॥ 47 ॥
O sage, after attaining Rudra’s region he rejoices with Rudra. Then he becomes one with Rudra by the mercy of Śiva.
