nandIzvara uvAca॥ sanatkumAra sarvvajJa zRNu tvaM bhairavIM kathAm ॥ yasyAH zravaNamAtreNa zaivI bhaktirdRDhA bhavet ॥ 1 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— O Sanatkumāra, O omniscient one, listen to the story of Bhairava by listening to which alone, devotion to Śiva becomes firm and steady.

भैरवः पूर्णरूपो हि शंकरस्य परात्मनः ॥ मूढास्तं वै न जानन्ति मोहिताश्शिवमायया ॥ २ ॥
bhairavaH pUrNarUpo hi zaMkarasya parAtmanaH ॥ mUDhAstaM vai na jAnanti mohitAzzivamAyayA ॥ 2 ॥
Bhairava is the prior form of Siva, the great soul. Fools who are deluded by Śiva’s Māyā do not know about it.

sanatkumAra no vetti mahimAnaM mahezituH॥ caturbhujo'pi viSNurvai caturvvaktro'pi vai vidhiH ॥ 3॥
O Sanatkumāra, neither Viṣṇu of four arms nor Brahmā of four faces knows the greatness of lord Śiva.

चित्रमत्र न किञ्चिद्वै दुर्ज्ञेया खलु शाम्भवी ॥ तया संमोहितास्सर्वे नार्चयन्त्यपि तम्परम् ॥ ४ ॥
citramatra na kiJcidvai durjJeyA khalu zAmbhavI ॥ tayA saMmohitAssarve nArcayantyapi tamparam ॥ 4 ॥
There is nothing to be surprised at in this. Siva’s Māyā is inscrutable. Deluded by it people do not even worship him, the great lord.

वेद चेद्यदि वात्मानं स एव परमेश्वरः ॥ तदा विहन्ति ते सर्व्वे स्वेच्छया न हि केऽपि तम्॥ ५॥
veda cedyadi vAtmAnaM sa eva paramezvaraH ॥ tadA vihanti te sarvve svecchayA na hi ke'pi tam॥ 5॥
If any one knows him the supreme soul, he alone is lord Śiva. But then, none of these people know him out of their own will.

सर्व्वगोऽपि महेशानो नेक्ष्यते मूढबुद्धिभिः॥ देववद् बुध्यते लोके योऽतीतो मनसां गिराम् ॥ ६॥
sarvvago'pi mahezAno nekSyate mUDhabuddhibhiH॥ devavad budhyate loke yo'tIto manasAM girAm ॥ 6॥
Although lord Śiva is omnipresent he is not seen by the people of deluded intellect. He is known as a mere lord, he who is beyond the reach of minds and words.

अत्रेतिहासं वक्ष्येऽहं परमर्षे पुरातनम् ॥ शृणु तं श्रद्धया तात परमं ज्ञानकारणम् ॥ ७ ॥
atretihAsaM vakSye'haM paramarSe purAtanam ॥ zRNu taM zraddhayA tAta paramaM jJAnakAraNam ॥ 7 ॥
O great sage, in this connection I shall narrate an ancient legend. O dear one, listen to it with faith. It is the great cause of perfect knowledge.

मेरुशृङ्गेऽद्भुते रम्ये स्थितम्ब्रह्माणमीश्वरम्॥ जग्मुर्देवर्षयः सर्व्वे सुतत्त्वं ज्ञातुमिच्छया ॥ ८॥
meruzRGge'dbhute ramye sthitambrahmANamIzvaram॥ jagmurdevarSayaH sarvve sutattvaM jJAtumicchayA ॥ 8॥
As Brahmā was stationed on the wonderful and beautiful summit of Meru, all the celestial sages approached him with a desire to know the real truth.

तत्रागत्य विधिन्नत्वा पप्रच्छुस्ते महादरात् ॥ कृताञ्जलिपुटास्सर्वे नतस्कन्धा मुनीश्वराः ॥ ९॥
tatrAgatya vidhinnatvA papracchuste mahAdarAt ॥ kRtAJjalipuTAssarve nataskandhA munIzvarAH ॥ 9॥
All the great sages with palms joined in reverence and shoulders drooping down came there and bowed to Brahmā. They asked him respectfully.

देवर्षय ऊचुः॥ देवदेव प्रजानाथ सृष्टिकृल्लोकनायक ॥ तत्त्वतो वद चास्मभ्यं किमेकं तत्त्वमव्ययम् ॥ १० ॥
devarSaya UcuH॥ devadeva prajAnAtha sRSTikRllokanAyaka ॥ tattvato vada cAsmabhyaM kimekaM tattvamavyayam ॥ 10 ॥
The celestial sages said:— O lord of gods, O lord of subjects, O Creator, O leader of the worlds, tell us the real fact. What is that sole unchanging entity?

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ sa mAyayA mahezasya mohitaH padmasambhavaH ॥ avijJAya parambhAvaM saMbhAvaM pratyuvAca ha ॥ 11॥
Nandīśvara said:— Deluded by the Māyā of great lord and not knowing the great fact the lotus-born Brahmā replied haughtily.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ हे सुरा ऋषयः सर्व्वे सुमत्या शृणुतादरात् ॥ वच्म्यहं परमं तत्त्वमव्ययं वै यथार्थतः ॥ १२ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ he surA RSayaH sarvve sumatyA zRNutAdarAt ॥ vacmyahaM paramaM tattvamavyayaM vai yathArthataH ॥ 12 ॥
Brahmā said:— O gods, O sages, all of you listen with attention and intelligence I shall describe the great unchanging entity as it really is.

जगद्योनिरहं धाता स्वयम्भूरज ईश्वरः ॥ अनादिभागहं ब्रह्म ह्येक आत्मा निरञ्जनः॥ १३॥
jagadyonirahaM dhAtA svayambhUraja IzvaraH ॥ anAdibhAgahaM brahma hyeka AtmA niraJjanaH॥ 13॥
I am the womb (material cause) of the universe, the creator, the self-born, the unborn, the lord, the primordial being, the Brahman, the sole unsullied soul.

प्रवर्तको हि जगतामहमेव निवर्त्तकः ॥ संवर्तको मदधिको नान्यः कश्चित्सुरोत्तमाः ॥ १४ ॥
pravartako hi jagatAmahameva nivarttakaH ॥ saMvartako madadhiko nAnyaH kazcitsurottamAH ॥ 14 ॥
O excellent gods, I am the instigator of the worlds, and the deterrent too. There is none greater than I or any other who causes their revolution.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ tasyaivaM vadato dhAturviSNustatra sthito mune ॥ provAca prahasanvAkyaM saMkruddho mohito'jayA ॥ 15॥
Nandīśvara said:— While the Creator was saying thus, O sage, Viṣṇu who was there became angry as he too was deluded by Māyā. He spoke these words derisively.

न चैतदुचिता ब्रह्मन्योगयुक्तस्य मूर्खता॥ अविज्ञाय परं तत्त्वं वृथैतत्ते निगद्यते॥ १६॥
na caitaducitA brahmanyogayuktasya mUrkhatA॥ avijJAya paraM tattvaM vRthaitatte nigadyate॥ 16॥
O Brahmā, this is not proper. It is sheer foolishness on the part of a practiser of Yoga. Without knowing the great reality, this is being mentioned in vain.

कर्ता वै सर्वलोकानां परमात्मा परः पुमान्॥ यज्ञो नारायणो देवो मायाधीशः परा गतिः॥ १७॥
kartA vai sarvalokAnAM paramAtmA paraH pumAn॥ yajJo nArAyaNo devo mAyAdhIzaH parA gatiH॥ 17॥
I am the Creator of all the worlds, the great Śtman, the greatest Puruṣa, the sacrifice, the lord Nārāyaṇa, the master of Māyā and the greatest goal.

ममाज्ञया त्वया ब्रह्मन्सृष्टिरेषा विधी यते ॥ जगतां जीवनं नैव मामनादृत्य चेश्वरम् ॥ १८॥
mamAjJayA tvayA brahmansRSTireSA vidhI yate ॥ jagatAM jIvanaM naiva mAmanAdRtya cezvaram ॥ 18॥
O Brahmā, it is at my behest that creation is carried on by you. Without regard for me, the lord, no life can exist in the worlds.

एवं त्रिप्रकृतौ मोहात्परस्परजयैषिणौ ॥ प्रोचतुर्निगमांश्चात्र प्रमाणे सर्वथा तनौ ॥ १९॥
evaM triprakRtau mohAtparasparajayaiSiNau ॥ procaturnigamAMzcAtra pramANe sarvathA tanau ॥ 19॥
O sage, thus starting a mutual clash due to delusion and desiring to conquer each other they asked the Vedas about truth.

प्रष्टव्यास्ते विशेषेण स्थिता मूर्तिधराश्च ते ॥ पप्रच्छतुः प्रमाणज्ञानित्युक्त्वा चतुरोऽपि तान्॥ २०॥
praSTavyAste vizeSeNa sthitA mUrtidharAzca te ॥ papracchatuH pramANajJAnityuktvA caturo'pi tAn॥ 20॥
The Vedas were there in embodied form. They shall be specifically asked. With this idea in mind they asked the four Vedas about the truth.

विधिविष्णू ऊचतुः॥ वेदाः प्रमाणं सर्व्वत्र प्रतिष्ठा परमामिताः॥ यूयं वदत विश्रब्धं किमेकं तत्त्वमव्ययम्॥ २१॥
vidhiviSNU UcatuH॥ vedAH pramANaM sarvvatra pratiSThA paramAmitAH॥ yUyaM vadata vizrabdhaM kimekaM tattvamavyayam॥ 21॥
Brahmā and Viṣṇu said:— Vedas are the authorities everywhere. They have been honoured everywhere. Hence you please say unreservedly. What is the sole unchanging entity?

nandIzvara uvAca॥ ityAkarNya tayorvAcaM punaste hi RgAdayaH॥ avadaMstattvataH sarvve saMsmarato paraM prabhum॥ 22॥
Nandīśvara said:— On hearing their words, the Vedas spoke in reality after remembering the lord.

yadi mAnyA vayandevau sRSTisthitikarau vibhU॥ tadA pramANaM vakSyAmo bhavatsandehabhedakam ॥ 23॥
“If we are honoured, O deities as the causes of creation and maintenance, we shall cite authorities that will dispel your doubts.

नन्दीश्वर उवाच॥ श्रुत्युक्तविधिमाकर्ण्य प्रोचतुस्तौ सुरौ श्रुतीः॥ युष्मदुक्तं प्रमाणं नौ किन्तत्त्वं सम्यगुच्यताम्॥ २४॥
nandIzvara uvAca॥ zrutyuktavidhimAkarNya procatustau surau zrutIH॥ yuSmaduktaM pramANaM nau kintattvaM samyagucyatAm॥ 24॥
Nandīśvara said:— On hearing the conditions mentioned by the Vedas the two deities told the Vedas—“What is mentioned by you is acceptable to us as authority. What is that entity? Please tell us that.

ऋग्वेद उवाच॥ यदन्तस्स्थानि भूतानि यतस्सर्व्वम्प्रवर्त्तते॥ यदाहुः परमन्तत्त्वं स रुद्रस्त्वेक एव हि ॥ २५ ॥
Rgveda uvAca॥ yadantassthAni bhUtAni yatassarvvampravarttate॥ yadAhuH paramantattvaM sa rudrastveka eva hi ॥ 25 ॥
Ṛgveda said:— That in which the Bhūtas stay, that from which everything comes out, what they call as the greatest entity—that is Rudra alone.

यजुर्वेद उवाच ॥ यो यज्ञैरखिलैरीशो योगेन च समिज्यते ॥ येन प्रमाणं खलु नस्स एकः सर्व्वदृक् छिवः ॥ २६॥
yajurveda uvAca ॥ yo yajJairakhilairIzo yogena ca samijyate ॥ yena pramANaM khalu nassa ekaH sarvvadRk chivaH ॥ 26॥
Yajurveda said:— The lord who is worshipped by means of all sacrifices and meditation, whereby we have an authority—that sole seer of all is Śiva.

सामवेद उवाच ॥ येनेदम्भ्रम्यते विश्वं योगिभिर्यो विचिन्त्यते ॥ यद्भासा भासते विश्वं स एकस्त्र्यम्बकः परः ॥ २७॥
sAmaveda uvAca ॥ yenedambhramyate vizvaM yogibhiryo vicintyate ॥ yadbhAsA bhAsate vizvaM sa ekastryambakaH paraH ॥ 27॥
Sāmaveda said:— That by which this universe whirls, that which is meditated upon by Yogins, the light whereby the universe Is illuminated—that Tryambaka alone is the greatest.

अथर्ववेद उवाच ॥ यं प्रपश्यन्ति देवेशम्भक्त्यनुग्रहिणो जनाः ॥ तमाहुरेकं कैवल्यं शंकरं दुःखतः परम् ॥ २८ ॥
atharvaveda uvAca ॥ yaM prapazyanti devezambhaktyanugrahiNo janAH ॥ tamAhurekaM kaivalyaM zaMkaraM duHkhataH param ॥ 28 ॥
Atharvaveda said:— They call that sole being Śiva who is beyond all misery who is the lord of gods whom the people who have the blessing of devotion see.

नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ श्रुत्युक्तमिदमाकर्ण्यातीवमायाविमोहितौ ॥ स्मित्वाहतुर्विधिहरी निगमांस्तान्विचेतनौ ॥ २९ ॥
nandIzvara uvAca ॥ zrutyuktamidamAkarNyAtIvamAyAvimohitau ॥ smitvAhaturvidhiharI nigamAMstAnvicetanau ॥ 29 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— After hearing what was thus said by the Vedas, Brahmā and Viṣṇu, deluded very much by the Māyā (and hence) crooked in consciousness smiled and said to the Vedas.

विधिहरी ऊचतुः ॥ हे वेदाः किमिदं यूयम्भाषन्ते गतचेतनाः ॥ किञ्जातं वोऽद्य सर्व्वं हि नष्टं सुवयुनं परम् ॥ ३० ॥
vidhiharI UcatuH ॥ he vedAH kimidaM yUyambhASante gatacetanAH ॥ kiJjAtaM vo'dya sarvvaM hi naSTaM suvayunaM param ॥ 30 ॥
Brahmā and Viṣṇu said:— O Vedas, what is this that you all speak without sense? What has happened to you? All wisdom is utterly lost now.

कथम्प्रमथनाथोऽसौ रममाणो निरन्तरम् ॥ दिगम्बरः पीतवर्णो शिवया धूलिधूसरः ॥ ३१ ॥
kathampramathanAtho'sau ramamANo nirantaram ॥ digambaraH pItavarNo zivayA dhUlidhUsaraH ॥ 31 ॥
How is it that the lord of Pramatha is constantly enjoying himself Digambara is yellow in color and dusty with Shiva.

विरूपवेषो जटिलो वृषगो व्यालभूषणः ॥ परं ब्रह्मत्वमापन्नः क्व च तत्संगवर्जितम् ॥ ३२ ॥
virUpaveSo jaTilo vRSago vyAlabhUSaNaH ॥ paraM brahmatvamApannaH kva ca tatsaMgavarjitam ॥ 32 ॥
He was dressed in disfigured clothes and had matted hair and was a bull adorned with serpents Where is he who has attained the Supreme Absolute Truth without association with Him?

इत्युदीरितमाकर्ण्य प्रणवः सर्वगस्तयोः ॥ अमूर्तो मूर्तिमान्प्रीत्या जृम्भमाण उवाच तौ ॥ ३३ ॥
ityudIritamAkarNya praNavaH sarvagastayoH ॥ amUrto mUrtimAnprItyA jRmbhamANa uvAca tau ॥ 33 ॥
On hearing their words, the all-pervasive Praṇava who though unembodied assumed an embodied, extensive form told them thus.

प्रणव उवाच ॥ न हीशो भगवाञ्छक्त्या ह्यात्मनो व्यतिरिक्तया ॥ कदाचिद्रमते रुद्रो लीलारूपधरो हरः ॥ ३४॥
praNava uvAca ॥ na hIzo bhagavAJchaktyA hyAtmano vyatiriktayA ॥ kadAcidramate rudro lIlArUpadharo haraH ॥ 34॥
Praṇava said: Lord Īśa, Rudra, Śiva indulging in sports and assuming various forms never sports about with the Śakti different from him.

असौ हि परमेशानस्स्वयंज्योतिस्सनातनः ॥ आनन्दरूपा तस्यैषा शक्तिर्नागन्तुकी शिवा ॥ ३५ ॥
asau hi paramezAnassvayaMjyotissanAtanaH ॥ AnandarUpA tasyaiSA zaktirnAgantukI zivA ॥ 35 ॥
The great lord, is self-luminous and eternal. Śivā is his Śakti in the form of Bliss, not a chance occurrence.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ ityevamukto'pi tadA vidherviSNozca vai tadA ॥ nAjJAnamagamannAzaM zrIkaNThasyaiva mAyayA ॥ 36 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— Even after this explanation the ignorance of Brahmā and Viṣṇu was not quelled. It was due to the Māyā of Śiva alone.

प्रादुरासीत्ततो ज्योतिरुभयोरन्तरे महत् ॥ पूरयन्निजया भासा द्यावाभूम्योर्यदन्तरम् ॥ ३७ ॥
prAdurAsIttato jyotirubhayorantare mahat ॥ pUrayannijayA bhAsA dyAvAbhUmyoryadantaram ॥ 37 ॥
Then a great flame manifested itself in their midst. It filled the space between the heaven and the sarth by means of its splendour.

ज्योतिर्मण्डलमध्यस्थो ददृशे पुरुषाकृतिः ॥ विधिक्रतुभ्यां तत्रैव महाद्भुततनुर्मुने ॥ ३८ ॥
jyotirmaNDalamadhyastho dadRze puruSAkRtiH ॥ vidhikratubhyAM tatraiva mahAdbhutatanurmune ॥ 38 ॥
O sage, then Brahma and Viṣṇu saw a shape in the form of a man in the middle of the mass of flame. Its body was huge and wonderful.

The fifth head of Brahmā burnt with rage (as. though saying) “who is this bearing a man’s outline and features in our midst?”

The method should be conceived as long as he is three-eyed. In an instant a great man of blue and red appeared.

He holds a trident in his hand and has eyes like a spear and is adorned with a serpent and the moon Seeing him Hiranyagarbha laughed and spoke bewildered.

brahmovAca ॥ nIlalohita jAne tvAM mA bhaiSIzcandrazekhara ॥ bhAlasthalAnmama purA rudraH prAdurabhUdbhavAn ॥ 42 ॥
Brahma said. I know you are blue and red, don't be afraid, Chandrashekhar. In the past you appeared as Rudra from the place of my forehead.

In the past I even gave you the name Rudra because of your crying Take refuge in Me alone, my son, for I will protect you.

Nandīśvara said: O sage, on hearing the haughty words of the lotus-born Brahmā, Śiva became angry as if out for destruction.

sa kopatassamutpAdya puruSaM bhairavaM kvacit ॥ prajvalantaM sumahasA prItyA ca paramezvaraH ॥ 45॥
Angrily, he created a Puruṣa Bhairava blazing in great brilliance. Then he spoke lovingly.

Izvara uvAca ॥ prAkca paMkajajanmAsau zAsyaste kAlabhairava ॥ kAlavadrAjase sAkSAtkAlarAjastato bhavAn ॥ 46 ॥
Śiva said:— O Kālabhairava, at the outset this lotus-born Brahmā shall be chastised by you. You shine like god of death, hence you are Kālarāja.

विश्वं भर्तुं समर्थोसि भीषणाद्भैरवः स्मृतः ॥ त्वत्तो भेष्यति कालोऽपि ततस्त्वं कालभैरवः ॥ ४७ ॥
vizvaM bhartuM samarthosi bhISaNAdbhairavaH smRtaH ॥ tvatto bheSyati kAlo'pi tatastvaM kAlabhairavaH ॥ 47 ॥
You are called Bhairava because you are of terrifying features and you are capable of supporting the universe. Since even Kāla is afraid of you, you are called Kālabhairava.

AmardayiSyati bhavAnruSTo duSTAtmano yataH ॥ Amardaka iti khyAtiM tatassarvatra yAsyasi ॥ 48॥
When you arc angry you will be suppressing the wicked souls. Hence you will be known everywhere as the suppressor of the wicked.

yataH pApAni bhaktAnAM bhakSayiSyasi tatkSaNAt ॥ pApabhakSaNa ityeva tava nAma bhaviSyati ॥ 49॥
Since you will be devouring the sins of devotees in a trice your name will be famous as sin-eater.

yA me muktipurI kAzI sarvvAbhyo'hi garIyasI ॥ AdhipatyaM ca tasyAste kAlarAja sadaiva hi ॥ 50॥
O Kālarāja, you will have forever the suzerainty over my city Kāśī, the city of liberation, which is greater than all other cities.

tatra ye pAtakinarAsteSAM zAstA tvameva hi ॥ zubhAzubhaM ca tatkarma citragupto likhiSyati ॥ 51॥
You alone will be the chastiser of those who commit sins there. Citragupta will write down their auspicious and inauspicious activities.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ etAnvarAnpragRhyAtha tatkSaNAtkAlabhairavaH ॥ vAmAMgulinakhAgreNa cakarta ca vidhezziraH ॥ 52॥
Nandīśvara said:— After receiving all these boons. Kāla-Bhairava, in a trice, cut off Brahmā’s head with the tip of the nails of the fingers of his left hand.

यदंगमपराध्नोति कार्यं तस्यैव शासनम् ॥ अतो येन कृता निन्दा तच्छिन्नम्पञ्चमं शिरः ॥ ५३॥
yadaMgamaparAdhnoti kAryaM tasyaiva zAsanam ॥ ato yena kRtA nindA tacchinnampaJcamaM ziraH ॥ 53॥
The limb that commits offence shall be chestísed. Hence the fifth head that censured was cut off.

atha cchinnaM vidhiziro dRSTvA bhItataro hariH ॥ zAtarudriyamantraizca bhaktyA tuSTAva zaGkaram ॥ 54॥
On seeing Brahma’s (Brahmā’s?) head cut off, Viṣṇu became terribly afraid. Devotedly he repeated the Śatarudriya mantras and eulogised Śiva.

bhIto hiraNyagarbho'pi jajApa zatarudriyam ॥ itthaM tau gatagarvau hi saMjAtau tatkSaNAnmune ॥ 55॥
The frightened golden-wombed Brahma (Brahmā?) too performed the Japa of Śatarudriya. O sage, thus, in an instant, both of them were divested of their pride.

परब्रह्म शिवः साक्षात्सच्चिदानन्दलक्षणः ॥ परमात्मा गुणातीत इति ज्ञानमवापतुः ॥ ५६ ॥
parabrahma zivaH sAkSAtsaccidAnandalakSaNaH ॥ paramAtmA guNAtIta iti jJAnamavApatuH ॥ 56 ॥
But they realised that Śiva is the Supreme Brahman with Sat (Existence) Cit (knowledge) and Ānanda (Bliss) as the characteristics. He is the great Ātman and transcends the attributes.

सनत्कुमार सर्वज्ञ शृणु मे परमं शुभम् ॥ यावद्गर्वो भवेत्तावज्ज्ञानगुप्तिर्विशेषतः ॥ ५७ ॥
sanatkumAra sarvajJa zRNu me paramaM zubham ॥ yAvadgarvo bhavettAvajjJAnaguptirvizeSataH ॥ 57 ॥
O omniscient Sanatkumāra, listen to my extremely auspicious advice. As long as there is pride, perfect knowledge lies excessively hidden.

tyaktvAbhi mAnaM puruSo jAnAti paramezvaram ॥ garviNaM hanti vizvezo jAto garvApahArakaH ॥ 58॥
Eschewing false prestige and pride, a man realises lord Śiva. Lord Śiva quells the arrogant because he is the destroyer of arrogance.

atha viSNuvidhI jJAtvA vigarvau paramezvaraH॥ prasanno'bhUnmahAdevo'karottAvabhayau prabhuH ॥ 59॥
Coming to know that Brahmā and Viṣṇu had been deprived of their pride, lord Śiva the great god became delighted and the lord assured them of his protection.

AzvAsya tau mahAdevaH prItaH praNatavatsalaH ॥ prAha svAM mUrtimaparAM bhairavantaM kapardinam ॥ 60॥
After consoling both of them, the delighted Śiva, favourably disposed towards his devotees, spoke to Bhairava—his own other form.

Lord Siva said:— This Viṣṇu shall be honoured by you as well as by Brahmā, O Nīlalohita, hold the skull of Brahmā as an atonement.

brahmahatyApanodAya vrataM lokAya darzaya ॥ cara tvaM satataM bhikSAM kapAlavratamAzritaH ॥ 62॥
Show to the world the rite of expiation for removing the sin of slaying brahmin. You beg for alms by resorting to “the rite of skull.”

After saying this and creating a virgin renowned as “Brahmahatyā” even as he was watching, Śiva, in the form of mass of flame, spoke thus.

yAvadvArANasIndivyAmpurImeSAM gamiSyati ॥ tAvattvaM bhISaNe kAlamanugacchograrUpiNam ॥ 64 ॥
Until she goes to the divine city of Vārāṇasī you too shall follow her for a terribly long period.

sarvatra te pravezo'sti tyaktvA vArANasIM purIm ॥ vArANasIM yadA gacchettanmuktAM bhava tatkSaNAt ॥ 65 ॥
You will have free access to everywhere except the city of Vārāṇasī. When she goes to Vārāṇasī you can be freed of her in a trice.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ niyojya tAmiti tadA brahmahatyAM ca tAmprabhuH ॥ mahAdbhutazca sa zivo'pyantardhAnamagAttataH ॥ 66 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— Thus directing the Brahmahatyā, the wonderful lord Śiva, vanished from the scene.
