sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ bhavAnkathamanuprApto mahAdevAMzajaH zivam ॥ zrotumicchAmi tatsarvaM vaktumarhasi me prabho ॥ 1 ॥
Sanatktumāra said:— O lord, how did you happen to be born of Mahādeva and gain access to Śiva I wish to hear. Please narrate everything in detail.

Nandīśvara said:— O sage Sanatkumāra, O omniscient one, listen with attention as to how I was born of Mahādeva and how I gained access to Śiva.

prajAkAmaH zilAdo'bhUduktaH pitRbhirAdarAt ॥ taduddhartumanA bhaktyA samuddhAramabhIpsubhiH ॥ 3 ॥
Desiring progeny, Shilada was respectfully addressed by his ancestors. Those who wish to lift it up with devotion.

adhodRSTiH sudharmAtmA zilAdo nAma vIryavAn ॥ tasyAsInmunikairvRttiH zivaloke ca sogamat ॥ 4 ॥
There was a mighty man named Shilada who was a righteous man of low vision He had a livelihood with the sages and was attracted to the world of Lord Shiva.

zakramuddizya sa munistapastepe suduH saham ॥ nizcalAtmA zilAdAkhyo bahukAlaM dRDhavrataH ॥ 5 ॥
That sage Śilāda performed a severe penance with Indra in view, for a long time. His mind was steady and he was stead-fast in his activities.

तपतस्तस्य तपसा संतुष्टोऽभूच्छतक्रतुः ॥ जगाम च वरं दातुं सर्वदेवप्रभुस्तदा ॥ ६ ॥
tapatastasya tapasA saMtuSTo'bhUcchatakratuH ॥ jagAma ca varaM dAtuM sarvadevaprabhustadA ॥ 6 ॥
Indra was delighted at his penance. He, the lord of gods, went to him in order to grant him the boon.

zilAdamAha suprItyA zakrastuSTo'smi te'nagha ॥ tena tvaM munizArdUla varayasva varAniti ॥ 7 ॥
Indra lovingly spoke to Śilāda—“O excellent sage, O sinless one, I am delighted with you. Therefore choose your boons.”

ततः प्रणम्य देवेशं स्तुत्वा स्तुतिभिरादरात् ॥ शिलादो मुनिशार्दूलस्तमाह सुकृताञ्जलिः ॥ ८॥
tataH praNamya devezaM stutvA stutibhirAdarAt ॥ zilAdo munizArdUlastamAha sukRtAJjaliH ॥ 8॥
Bowing to the lord of the gods and eulogising him with holy hymns, Śilāda, the most excellent sage, told him with palms joined in reverence.

zilAda uvAca ॥ zatakrato surezAna santuSTo yadi me prabho॥ ayonijaM mutyuhInaM putramicchAmi suvratam॥ 9॥
Śilāda said:— O lord of gods, O Indra, if you are pleased with me, I wish to have a son of holy rites free of death and not born of a womb.

zakra uvAca॥ putraM dAsyAmi putrArthinyonijaM mRtyusaMyutam ॥ anyathA te na dAsyAmi mRtyuhInA na santi vai ॥ 10॥
Indra said:— O desirer of a son, I can give you only a son born of a womb and sure to die. I cannot give it to you otherwise. There are no persons who can escape death.

na dAsyAmi sutaM te'haM mRtyuhInamayonijam ॥ harirvidhizca bhagavAnkimutAnyo mahAmune ॥ 11॥
I shall not give you a son devoid of death and not born of a womb. O great sage, even lord Viṣṇu and Brahmā die. Not to speak of others then?

tAvapi tripurAryaMgasambhAvau maraNAnvitau ॥ tayorapyAyuSA mAnaM kathitaM nigame pRthak ॥ 12॥
Even these two, born of Śiva, the destroyer of the Tripuras, die. The extent of their longevity has been mentioned separately in. the sacred lore.

tasmAdayonije putre mRtyuhIne prayatnataH ॥ parityajAzAM viprendra gRhANAtmakSamaM sutam॥ 13॥
Hence O great brahmin, abandon your desire of deathless son who is not born of a womb. Accept a son befitting your mortal nature.

kintu devezvaro rudraH prasIdati mahezvaraH ॥ sudurlabho mRtyuhInastava putro hyayonijaH ॥ 14 ॥
But if Śiva, the lord of the gods, becomes delighted, even an immortal son not born of a womb, though hard to get, may be obtained.

ahaM ca viSNurbhagavAndruhiNazca mahAmune ॥ ayonijaM mRtyuhInaM putraM dAtuM na zaknumaH ॥ 15 ॥
Neither I, nor lord Viṣṇu, nor Brahmā, O, great sage, can give an immortal son not born of a womb.

आराधय महादेवं तत्पुत्रविनिकाम्यया ॥ सर्वेश्वरो महाशक्तः स ते पुत्रं प्रदास्यति ॥ १६ ॥
ArAdhaya mahAdevaM tatputravinikAmyayA ॥ sarvezvaro mahAzaktaH sa te putraM pradAsyati ॥ 16 ॥
Propitiate lord Śiva therefore, for tḥe fulfilment of your desire for such a son. The great lord of all is very powerful. He will give you a son.

नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ एवं व्याहृत्य विप्रेन्द्रमनुगृह्य च तं घृणी॥ देवैर्वृतः सुरेशानस्स्वलोकं समगान्मुने ॥ १७ ॥
nandIzvara uvAca ॥ evaM vyAhRtya viprendramanugRhya ca taM ghRNI॥ devairvRtaH surezAnassvalokaM samagAnmune ॥ 17 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— O sage, after speaking thus to the great brahmin and blessing him, the compassionate lord of the gods returned to his region surrounded by the gods.

गते तस्मिंश्च वरदे सहस्राक्षे शिलाशनः ॥ आराधयन्महादेवं तपसातोषयद्भवम्॥ १८॥
gate tasmiMzca varade sahasrAkSe zilAzanaH ॥ ArAdhayanmahAdevaM tapasAtoSayadbhavam॥ 18॥
When the granter of boons, the thousand-eyed lord Indra had gone away, Śilāda propitiated lord Śiva. He delighted Śiva by means of his penance.

अथ तस्यैवमनिशन्तत्परस्य द्विजस्त वै ॥ दिव्यम्वर्षसहस्रं तु गतं क्षणमिवाद्भुतम् ॥ १९॥
atha tasyaivamanizantatparasya dvijasta vai ॥ divyamvarSasahasraM tu gataM kSaNamivAdbhutam ॥ 19॥
As the brahmin was engrossed in penance day and night, a thousand divine years elapsed like a moment.

वल्मीकेन वृतांगश्च लक्षकोटगणैर्मुनिः ॥ सूचीमुखैश्चान्यै रक्तभुग्भिश्च सर्वतः ॥ २०॥
valmIkena vRtAMgazca lakSakoTagaNairmuniH ॥ sUcImukhaizcAnyai raktabhugbhizca sarvataH ॥ 20॥
The sage was covered with ants and hundreds of thousands of crores of ants List faces and other red-eaters everywhere.

निर्मांसरुधिर त्वग्वै बिले तस्मिन्नवस्थितः ॥ अस्थिशेषोभवत्पश्चाच्छिलादो मुनिसत्तमः ॥ २१ ॥
nirmAMsarudhira tvagvai bile tasminnavasthitaH ॥ asthizeSobhavatpazcAcchilAdo munisattamaH ॥ 21 ॥
The skin without flesh and blood remained in the cave The remains of the bones were later recovered by the great sage Shilada.

तुष्टः प्रभुस्तदा तस्मै दर्शयामास स्वां तनुम् ॥ दिव्यां दिव्यगुणैर्युक्तामलभ्यां वामबुद्धिभिः ॥ २२॥
tuSTaH prabhustadA tasmai darzayAmAsa svAM tanum ॥ divyAM divyaguNairyuktAmalabhyAM vAmabuddhibhiH ॥ 22॥
The delighted lord showed him his divine body endowed with all divine qualities and inaccessible to people of crooked intellect.

दिव्यवर्षसहस्रेण तप्यमानाय शूलधृक् ॥ सर्वदेवाधिपस्तस्मै वरदोस्मीत्यभाषत ॥ २३॥
divyavarSasahasreNa tapyamAnAya zUladhRk ॥ sarvadevAdhipastasmai varadosmItyabhASata ॥ 23॥
As he continued the penance for a thousand divine years, the trident-bewaring lord of all the spoke to him “I am here, the granter of boons.”

महासमाधिसंलीनस्स शिलादो महामुनिः ॥ नाशृणोत्तद्गिरं शम्भोर्भक्त्यधीनरतस्य वै॥ २४॥
mahAsamAdhisaMlInassa zilAdo mahAmuniH ॥ nAzRNottadgiraM zambhorbhaktyadhInaratasya vai॥ 24॥
The great sage Śilāda engrossed in the trance did not hear those words of Śiva who is subservient to the devotees.

yadA spRSTo munistena kareNa tripurAriNA ॥ tadaiva munizArdUla utsasarja? tapaHkramam ॥ 25॥
Only when the great sage was touched by the slayer of the Tripuras did he leave off his penance.

athonmIlya munirnetre somaM zaMbhuM vilokayan ॥ drutaM praNamya sa mudA pAdayornyapatanmune॥ 26॥
O sage, on seeing Śiva accompanied by Pārvatī after opening his eyes, he immediately bowed to him and fell at his feet with joy.

harSagadgadayA vAcA nataskaMdhaH kRtAJjaliH॥ prasannAtmA zilAdassa tuSTAva paramezvaram ॥ 27॥
The delighted Śilāda, drooping down his shoulders, with palms joined in reverence eulogised lord Śiva with words choked with pleasure.

Then the delighted lord of gods, the three-eyed deity told the great sage “I am the granter of boons.”

tapasAnena kiM kAryaM bhavate hi mahA mate॥ dadAmi putraM sarvajJaM sarvazAstrArthapAragam॥ 29॥
O intelligent one, what shall be done with this penance? I shall give you a son who will be omniscient and a master of all sacred lore.

On hearing that, the sage Śilāda bowed to the moon-crested lord and spoke in words choked with pleasure.

zilAda uvAca ॥ maheza yadi tuSTo'si yadi vA varadazca me ॥ icchAmi tvatsamaM putraM mRtyuhInamayonijam ॥ 31॥
Śilāda said:— O lord Śiva, if you are delighted, if you are ready to grant boons, I wish for a son equal to you, devoid of death and not born of a womb.

naMdIzvara uvAca ॥ evamuktastato devastryambakastena zaGkaraH ॥ pratyuvAca prasannAtmA zilAdaM munisattamam॥ 32॥
Nandīśvara said:— When thus requested by him, the three-eyed lord Śiva delightedly replied to the excellent sage Śilāda.

॥ शिव उवाच ॥ पूर्वमाराधितो विप्र ब्रह्मणाहं तपोधन ॥ तपसा चावतारार्थं मुनिभिश्च सुरोत्तमैः॥ ३३॥
॥ ziva uvAca ॥ pUrvamArAdhito vipra brahmaNAhaM tapodhana ॥ tapasA cAvatArArthaM munibhizca surottamaiH॥ 33॥
Śiva said:— O brahmin, O sage, formerly I have been propitiated by means of penance by Brahmā, by sages and by leading gods and urged to take an incarnation.

तव पुत्रो भविष्यामि नन्दी नाम्ना त्वयोनिजः ॥ पिता भविष्यसि मम पितुर्वै जगतां मुने ॥ ३४ ॥
tava putro bhaviSyAmi nandI nAmnA tvayonijaH ॥ pitA bhaviSyasi mama piturvai jagatAM mune ॥ 34 ॥
O sage, I shall become your son by the name of Nandin. I shall not be born of a womb. Thus you shall be my father, of me who am the father of the worlds.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ evamuktvA muniM prekSya praNipatyAsthitaM ghRNI ॥ somastUrNaM tamAdizya tatraivAntardadhe haraH ॥ 35॥
Nandīśvara said:— After addressing these words to the sage who stood waiting after bowing, the merciful lord Śiva gave him his directions and vanished there itself along with Pārvatī.

gate tasminmahAdeve sa zilAdo mahAmuniH॥ svamAzrayamupAgamya RSibhyo'kathayattataH ॥ 36॥
After lord Śiva had disappeared, the great sage Śilāda returned to his hermitage and mentioned the tidings to the sages.

kiyatA caiva kAlena tadAsau janakaH sa me॥ yajJAMgaNaM cakarSAzu yajJArthaM yajJavittamaH॥ 37॥
After a short while, my father, the foremost among those who knew the sacrificial rites, ordered for the construction of the sacrificial altar for the performance of sacrifice.

ततः क्षणादहं शंभोस्तनुजस्तस्य चाज्ञया॥ स जातः पूर्व्वमेवाहं युगान्ताग्निसमप्रभः ॥ ३८ ॥
tataH kSaNAdahaM zaMbhostanujastasya cAjJayA॥ sa jAtaH pUrvvamevAhaM yugAntAgnisamaprabhaH ॥ 38 ॥
But before the beginning of sacrifice I was born as Śiva’s son at his bidding, with a lustre as brilliant as the fire at the end of a Yuga.

अवर्षंस्तदा पुष्करावर्तकाद्या जगुः खेचराः किन्नराः सिद्धसाध्या ॥ शिलादात्मजत्वं गते मय्यृषीन्द्रास्समन्ताच्च वृष्टिं व्यधुः कौसुमीं ते॥ ३९॥
avarSaMstadA puSkarAvartakAdyA jaguH khecarAH kinnarAH siddhasAdhyA ॥ zilAdAtmajatvaM gate mayyRSIndrAssamantAcca vRSTiM vyadhuH kausumIM te॥ 39॥
Then Puṣkarāvartaka and other clouds showered. When I was born as the son of Śilāda, the Kinnaras, Siddhas, Sādhyas and other beings walked through the sky and the great sages made showers of flowers all round.

अथ ब्रह्मादयो देवा देवपल्यश्च सर्वशः ॥ तत्राजग्मुश्च सुप्रीत्या हरिश्चैव शिवोऽम्बिका॥ ४०॥

After praising Śilāda and eulogising Śiva and Pārvatī by reciting good hymn all of them returned to their respective abodes. Śiva and Śivā, the lord and goddess of all, went away too.
