॥ नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ शृणु तात महेशस्यावतारान्परमान्प्रभो ॥ सर्वकार्यकराँल्लोके सर्वस्य सुखदान्मुने ॥१॥
॥ nandIzvara uvAca ॥ zRNu tAta mahezasyAvatArAnparamAnprabho ॥ sarvakAryakarA~lloke sarvasya sukhadAnmune ॥1॥
Nandīśvara said:— O dear sage, listen to the great incarnations of lord Śiva that carry out all worldly activities and bestow happiness on all.

तस्य शंभोः परेशस्य मूर्त्यष्टकमयं जगत् ॥ तस्मिन्व्याप्य स्थितं विश्वं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥२॥
tasya zaMbhoH parezasya mUrtyaSTakamayaM jagat ॥ tasminvyApya sthitaM vizvaM sUtre maNigaNA iva ॥2॥
The universe consists of the eight forms of lord Śiva. Pervading that the universe subsists like the pearls in the string.

शर्वो भवस्तथा रुद्र उग्रो भीमः पशो पतिः ॥ ईशानश्च महादेवो मूर्तयश्चाष्ट विश्रुताः ॥ ३ ॥
zarvo bhavastathA rudra ugro bhImaH pazo patiH ॥ IzAnazca mahAdevo mUrtayazcASTa vizrutAH ॥ 3 ॥
The eight presiding deities are Śarva, Bhava, Rudra, Ugra, Bhīma, Paśupati, Īśāna and Mahādeva. They are well known.

भूम्यंभोग्निमरुद्व्योमक्षेत्रज्ञार्कनिशाकराः ॥ अधिष्ठिताश्च शर्वाद्यैरष्टरूपैः शिवस्य हि ॥४॥
bhUmyaMbhognimarudvyomakSetrajJArkanizAkarAH ॥ adhiSThitAzca zarvAdyairaSTarUpaiH zivasya hi ॥4॥
By these eight forms of Śiva, viz. Śarva etc, the earth, the waters, the fire, the wind, the sky, the individual soul, the sun and the moon are presided over.

धत्ते चराचरं विश्वं रूपं विश्वंभरात्मकम् ॥ शंकरस्य महेशस्य शास्त्रस्यैवेति निश्चयः ॥ ५ ॥
dhatte carAcaraM vizvaM rUpaM vizvaMbharAtmakam ॥ zaMkarasya mahezasya zAstrasyaiveti nizcayaH ॥ 5 ॥
The conclusion of all sacred lore is that the form of lord Śiva consisting of the earth that holds the entire universe of the mobile and immobile beings is called Śarva.

संजीवनं समस्तस्य जगतः सलिलात्मकम् ॥ भव इत्युच्यते रूपं भवस्य परमात्मनः ॥६॥
saMjIvanaM samastasya jagataH salilAtmakam ॥ bhava ityucyate rUpaM bhavasya paramAtmanaH ॥6॥
The form of the Supreme Soul, consisting of water that enlivens the entire world, is called Bhava.

बहिरंतर्जगद्विश्वं बिभर्ति स्पन्दतेस्य यम् ॥ उग्र इत्युच्यते सद्भी रूपमुग्रस्य सत्प्रभो ॥७॥
bahiraMtarjagadvizvaM bibharti spandatesya yam ॥ ugra ityucyate sadbhI rUpamugrasya satprabho ॥7॥
The form of the great lord Śiva that holds the outer and inner universe and throbs by itself is called Ugra by the noble.

सर्वावकाशदं सर्वव्यापकं गगनात्मकम् ॥ रूपं भीमस्य भीमाख्यं भूपवृन्दस्व भेदकम् ॥ ८ ॥
sarvAvakAzadaM sarvavyApakaM gaganAtmakam ॥ rUpaM bhImasya bhImAkhyaM bhUpavRndasva bhedakam ॥ 8 ॥
That form of lord Śiva consisting of the firmament that pervades everything and affords space to all is scaled Bhīma and it splits and differentiates the group of elements.

सर्वात्मनामधिष्ठानं सर्वक्षेत्रनिवासकम् ॥ रूपं पशुपतेर्ज्ञेयं पशुपाशनिकृन्तनम् ॥९॥
sarvAtmanAmadhiSThAnaM sarvakSetranivAsakam ॥ rUpaM pazupaterjJeyaM pazupAzanikRntanam ॥9॥
That form of Śiva shall be known as Paśupati which is the support of individual souls, and abiding therein splits the bondage that encircles them.

सन्दीपयञ्जगत्सर्वं दिवाकरसमाह्वयम् ॥ ईशानाख्यं महेशस्य रूपं दिवि विसर्पति ॥ १०॥
sandIpayaJjagatsarvaM divAkarasamAhvayam ॥ IzAnAkhyaM mahezasya rUpaM divi visarpati ॥ 10॥
Brightening the entire universe in the form of the sun, the form of Śiva, Īśāna, moves about in the heaven.

आप्याययति यो विश्वममृतांशुर्निशाकरः ॥ महादेवस्य तद्रूपं महादेवस्य चाह्वयम् ॥ ११ ॥
ApyAyayati yo vizvamamRtAMzurnizAkaraH ॥ mahAdevasya tadrUpaM mahAdevasya cAhvayam ॥ 11 ॥
The moon of nectarlike rays that strengthens and fattens the universe to satiety, is the form of lord Śiva called Mahādeva.

आत्मा तस्याष्टमं रूपं शिवस्य परमात्मनः ॥ व्यापिकेतरमूर्तीनां विश्वं तस्माच्छिवात्मकम् ॥ १२ ॥
AtmA tasyASTamaM rUpaM zivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ vyApiketaramUrtInAM vizvaM tasmAcchivAtmakam ॥ 12 ॥
The eighth form of Śiva, the great soul, is the Ātman, more pervasive than the other forms. The universe is pervaded by that form.

शाखाः पुष्यन्ति वृक्षस्य वृक्षमूलस्य सेचनात् ॥ तद्वदस्य वपुर्विश्वं पुष्यते च शिवार्चनात ॥१३॥
zAkhAH puSyanti vRkSasya vRkSamUlasya secanAt ॥ tadvadasya vapurvizvaM puSyate ca zivArcanAta ॥13॥
By watering the root of a tree the branches of the tree blossom. Similarly the body of the universe develops by means of worshipping Śiva.

यथेह पुत्रपौत्रादेः प्रीत्या प्रीतो भवेत्पिता ॥ तथा विश्वस्य सम्प्रीत्या प्रीतो भवति शंकरः ॥ १४ ॥
yatheha putrapautrAdeH prItyA prIto bhavetpitA ॥ tathA vizvasya samprItyA prIto bhavati zaMkaraH ॥ 14 ॥
Just as a father is delighted at the pleasures of sons, grandsons and others, so also Śiva is delighted at the pleasures of the universe.

क्रियते यस्य कस्यापि देहिनो यदि निग्रहः ॥ अष्टमूर्त्तेरनिष्टं तत्कृतमेव न संशयः ॥ १५ ॥
kriyate yasya kasyApi dehino yadi nigrahaH ॥ aSTamUrtteraniSTaM tatkRtameva na saMzayaH ॥ 15 ॥
Should the slaughter or captivity of a person be carried out, undoubtedly it is an offence committed against the eight-formed lord Śiva.

अष्टमूर्त्यात्मना विश्वमधिष्ठायास्थितं शिवम् ॥ भजस्व सर्वभावेन रुद्रं परमकारणम् ॥ १६ ॥
aSTamUrtyAtmanA vizvamadhiSThAyAsthitaM zivam ॥ bhajasva sarvabhAvena rudraM paramakAraNam ॥ 16 ॥
Worship Śiva who presides over the universe in the eightfold forms with all devotion. Worship Rudra, the great cause.

इति प्रोक्ताः स्वरूपास्ते विधिपुत्राष्टविश्रुताः ॥ सर्वोपकारनिरताः सेव्याः श्रेयोर्थिभिर्नरैः ॥ १७ ॥
iti proktAH svarUpAste vidhiputrASTavizrutAH ॥ sarvopakAraniratAH sevyAH zreyorthibhirnaraiH ॥ 17 ॥
O son of Brahmā, thus the well known eight forms have been explained to you. These forms engaged in helping everyone shall be resorted to by those who seek glory.
