zaunaka uvAca ॥ vyAsaziSyamahAbhAga sUta jJAnadayAnidhe ॥ vada zaMbhvavatArAMzca yairakArSItsatAM zivam ॥1॥
Śaunaka said:— O Sūta, O great fortunate disciple of Vyāsa, O storehouse of wisdom and mercy; please narrate the incarnations of lord Śiva by means of which the lord enhanced the welfare of the good.

sUta uvAca ॥ mune zaunaka sadbhaktyA dattacitto jitendriyaH ॥ avatArAJchivasyAhaM vacmi te munaye zRNu ॥2॥
Sūta said:— O sage Śaunaka, with great devotion I shall narrate the incarnations of Śiva to you a sage. Listen to it with attention and control over the senses.

etatpRSTaH purA nandI zivamUrtissatAM gatiH ॥ sanatkumAreNa mune tamuvAca zivaM smaran ॥3॥
O sage, formerly, Nandin, a form of Śiva and of the good, when asked by Sanatkumāra, told him the narrative with devotion to Siva.

nandIzvara uvAca ॥ asaMkhyAtA hi kalpeSu vibhoH sarvvezvarasya vai॥ avatArAstathApIha vacmyahaM tAnyathAmati ॥ 4 ॥
Nandīśvara said:— The incarnations of the omnipresent lord Śiva are countless in the different aeons. Yet I shall narrate them as far as I know.

ekonaviMzakaH kalpo vijJeyaH zveta lohitaH ॥ sadyojAtAvatArastu prathamaH parikIrtitaH ॥5॥
The nineteenth Kalpa is known as Śvetalohita. The first incarnation is glorified as the incarnation of Sadyojāta.

tasmiMstatparamaM brahma dhyAyato brahmaNastathA॥ utpannastu zikhAyuktaH kumAraH zvetalohitaH ॥ 6 ॥
In that Kalpa, Śvetalohita, endowed with a tuft, was born as the son of Brahmā as he meditated upon the supreme Brahman.

taM dRSTvA puruSaM brahmA brahmarUpiNamIzvaram ॥ jJAtvA dhyAtvA sa hRdaye vavande prayatAJjaliH। 7 ॥ ।
. On seeing that Being in the form of Brahman and realising that to be Īśvara, Brahmā meditated on in his heart and saluted him with palms joined in reverence.

सद्योजातं शिवं बुद्ध्वा जहर्ष भुवनेश्वरः ॥ मुहुर्मुहुश्च सद्बुद्ध्या परं तं समचिन्तयत्॥८॥
sadyojAtaM zivaM buddhvA jaharSa bhuvanezvaraH ॥ muhurmuhuzca sadbuddhyA paraM taM samacintayat॥8॥
Knowing that Sadyojāta to be Śiva, Brahmā, the lord of the worlds became delighted. With pure intelligence he pondered over that great Being again and again.

tato'sya dhyAyataH zvetAH prAdurbhUtA yazasvinaH ॥ kumArAH paravijJAnaparabrahmasvarUpiNaH ॥9॥
As he thus meditated, sons white in colour and famous for valour, were born to him. They were of great wisdom and had the form of the Supreme Brahman.

सुनन्दो नन्दनश्चैव विश्वनन्दोपनन्दनौ ॥ शिष्यास्तस्य महात्मानो यैस्तद्ब्रह्म समावृतम्॥१०॥
sunando nandanazcaiva vizvanandopanandanau ॥ ziSyAstasya mahAtmAno yaistadbrahma samAvRtam॥10॥
They were Sunanda, Nandana, Viśvananda and Upanandana. They were the disciples of that noble soul. By them the Brahman was encircled.

sadyojAtazca vai zambhurdadau jJAnaM ca vedhase ॥ sargazaktimapi prItyA prasannaH paramezvaraH ॥11॥
The delighted great lord, the Sadyojāta incarnation of Śiva, lovingly bestowed on Brahmā the perfect wisdom and the power of creation.

ततो विंशतिमः कल्पो रक्तो नाम प्रकीर्तितः ॥ ब्रह्मा यत्र महातेजा रक्तवर्णमधारयत् ॥१२॥
tato viMzatimaH kalpo rakto nAma prakIrtitaH ॥ brahmA yatra mahAtejA raktavarNamadhArayat ॥12॥
The next Kalpa, the twentieth one is named and glorified as Rakta (red) wherein Brahmā assumed a great splendour red in hue.

dhyAyataH putrakAmasya prAdurbhU to vidhessutaH ॥ raktamAlyAmbaradharo raktAkSo raktabhUSaNaH॥13॥
As Brahmā desirous of sons meditated, a son appeared in front of him wearing red garments and garlands. His eyes were red and his ornaments too were red.

स तं दृष्ट्वा महात्मानं कुमारं ध्यानमाश्रितः॥ वामदेवं शिवं ज्ञात्वा प्रणनाम कृतांजलिः ॥ १४ ॥
sa taM dRSTvA mahAtmAnaM kumAraM dhyAnamAzritaH॥ vAmadevaM zivaM jJAtvA praNanAma kRtAMjaliH ॥ 14 ॥
On seeing that noble-souled son, he resorting to meditation knew him as the Vāmadeva incarnation of Śiva and so bowed to him with palms joined in reverence.

tatastasya sutA hyAsaMzcatvAro raktavAsasaH ॥ virajAzca vivAhazca vizoko vizvabhAvanaH ॥ 15 ॥
Your sons wearing red garments were born of him Viz. Virajas, Vivāha, Viśoka and Viśvabhāvana.

vAmadevaH sa vai zambhurdadau jJAnaM ca vedhase ॥ sargazaktimapi prItyA prasannaH paramezvaraH ॥ 16 ॥
The delighted Parameśvara, the Vāmadeva incarnation of Śiva bestowed on Brahmā lovingly, the power of cation and perfect wisdom.

ekaviMzatimaH kalpaH pItavAsA iti smRtaH ॥ brahmA yatra mahAbhAgaH pItavAsA babhUva ha ॥17॥
The twenty-first Kalpa is said to be Pītavāsas wherein Brahmā of great achievement became yellow-robed.

dhyAyataH putrakAmasya vidherjAtaH kumArakaH॥ pItavastrAdika prauDho mahAtejA mahAbhujaH॥18॥
As Brahmā desirous of sons meditated, a son born unto him mature, of great arms and great splendour and wearing yellow garments.

तं दृष्ट्वा ध्यानसंयुक्तं ज्ञात्वा तत्पुरुषं शिवम्॥ प्रणनाम ततो बुद्ध्या गायत्रीं शांकरीं विधिः॥१९॥
taM dRSTvA dhyAnasaMyuktaM jJAtvA tatpuruSaM zivam॥ praNanAma tato buddhyA gAyatrIM zAMkarIM vidhiH॥19॥
Seeing Him engaged in meditation, I knew that person to be auspicious. Then Vidhi bowed down to Gayatri Shankari with his intellect.

जपित्वा तु महादेवीं सर्वलोकनमस्कृताम्॥ प्रसन्नस्तु महादेवो ध्यानयुक्तेन चेतसा॥२०॥
japitvA tu mahAdevIM sarvalokanamaskRtAm॥ prasannastu mahAdevo dhyAnayuktena cetasA॥20॥
On seeing him engrossed in meditation and realising that Being as Śiva, the Creator bowed to him after performing the Japa of Śiva-Gāyatrī, who is the great goddess, bowed to by all the worlds. The great god was delighted with the mind in contemplation.

ततोऽस्य पार्श्वतो दिव्याः प्रादुर्भूताः कुमारकाः ॥ पीतवस्त्रा हि सकला योगमार्गप्रवर्तकाः ॥२१॥
tato'sya pArzvato divyAH prAdurbhUtAH kumArakAH ॥ pItavastrA hi sakalA yogamArgapravartakAH ॥21॥
Then from his sides sons of divine features issued forth. All of them had yellow garments and they were the instigators of the Yogic path.

tatastasmingate kalpe pItavarNe svayaMbhuvaH। punaranyaH pravRttastu kalpo nAmnA zivastu sa ॥22॥
When that Kalpa of yellow colour of the self-born lord elapsed, another Kalpa set in and it was named Śiva.

एकार्णवे संव्यतीते दिव्यवर्षसहस्रके ॥ स्रष्टुकामः प्रजा ब्रह्मा चिन्तयामास दुःखितः ॥२३॥
ekArNave saMvyatIte divyavarSasahasrake ॥ sraSTukAmaH prajA brahmA cintayAmAsa duHkhitaH ॥23॥
After a thousand divine years had elapsed and the entire universe had become one vast ocean, Brahmā desirous of creating subjects thought in sorrow.

ततोऽपश्यन्महातेजा प्रादुर्भूतं कुमारकम्॥ कृष्णवर्णं महावीर्यं दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा॥२४॥
tato'pazyanmahAtejA prAdurbhUtaM kumArakam॥ kRSNavarNaM mahAvIryaM dIpyamAnaM svatejasA॥24॥
That lord of great splendour saw a son coming into view. He was black in colour, possessed of great strength. He was shining in his own splendour.

धृतकृष्णाम्बरोष्णीषं कृष्णयज्ञोपवीतिनम्॥ कृष्णेन मौलिनायुक्तं कृष्णस्नानानुलेपनम्॥२५॥
dhRtakRSNAmbaroSNISaM kRSNayajJopavItinam॥ kRSNena maulinAyuktaM kRSNasnAnAnulepanam॥25॥
He was clad in black clothes and a black turban. He wore a black sacred thread. He had a black coronet, black toilet and unguent articles.

sa taM dRSTvA mahAtmAnamaghoraM ghoravikramam ॥ vavande devadevezamadbhutaM kRSNapiMgalam ॥26॥
On seeing that noble soul of terrible exploits, (named) Aghora (non-terrible), he worshipped him—the lord of god, of wonderful black and tawny colour.

aghoraM tu tato brahmA brahmarUpaM vyaciMtayat ॥ tuSTAva vAgbhiriSTAbhirbhaktavatsalamavyayam ॥ 27 ॥
Brahmā then contemplated on Aghora in the form of Brahman. He eulogised that unperishing Being favourably disposed towards his devotees, by means of pleasing words.

athAsya pArzvataH kRSNAH kRSNasnAnAnulepanAH॥ catvArastu mahAtmAnaH saMbabhUvuH kumArakAH॥28॥
Then from his sides sprang up four noble-souled sons all of whom were black in colour and had black toilet and unguent articles.

kRSNa kRSNazikhazcaiva kRSNA syaH kRSNakaNThadhRk ॥ iti te'vyaktanAmAnaH zivarUpAH sutejasaH ॥29॥
These brilliant beings in the form of Śiva had the clear names Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇaśikḥa, Kṛṣṇāsya and Kṛṣṇakaṇṭha-dhṛk.

एवंभूता महात्मानो ब्रह्मणः सृष्टिहेतवे ॥ योगं प्रवर्त्तया मासुर्घोराख्यं महदद्भुतम् ॥ ३० ॥
evaMbhUtA mahAtmAno brahmaNaH sRSTihetave ॥ yogaM pravarttayA mAsurghorAkhyaM mahadadbhutam ॥ 30 ॥
The noble-souled beings of this nature initiated the great and wonderful Yoga called Ghora for the purpose of Brahmā’s creation.

अथान्यो ब्रह्मणः कल्पः प्रावर्त्तत मुनीश्वराः ॥ विश्वरूप इति ख्यातो नामतः परमाद्भुतः॥३१॥
athAnyo brahmaNaH kalpaH prAvarttata munIzvarAH ॥ vizvarUpa iti khyAto nAmataH paramAdbhutaH॥31॥
O great sages, then another extremely wonderful Kalpa of Brahmā, named Viśvarūpa began to function.

brahmaNaH putrakAmasya dhyAyato manasA zivam ॥ prAdurbhUtA mahAnAdA vizvarUpA sarasvatI ॥32॥
As Brahmā, desirous of sons, meditated on Śiva mentally, Sarasvatī (Goddess of speech) of great sound manifested herself. She was Viśvarūpā (Universe-formed).

tathAvidhaH sa bhagavAnIzAnaH paramezvaraH ॥ zuddhasphaTikasaMkAzaH sarvAbharaNabhUSitaH ॥ 33 ॥
Īśāna of such renowned features, supreme lord of crystal-like pure brilliance and bedecked in all ornaments manifested himself.

taM dRSTvA praNanAmAsau brahmezAnamajaM vibhum ॥ sarvagaM sarvadaM sarvaM surUpaM rUpavarjitam ॥34॥
On seeing Īśāna the unborn lord, all pervading, all-bestowing, the all-in-all, of good forms as well as formless, Brahmā bowed to him.

IzAno'pi tathAdizya sanmArgaM brahmaNe vibhuH ॥ sazaktiH kalpayAMcakre sa bAlAMzcaturaH zubhAn ॥ 35 ॥
Lord Īśāna after instructing the path of the ॥ good॥ to Brahmā, created four auspicious sons in collaboration with his Energy.

जटीमुण्डी शिखण्डी च अर्द्धमुण्डश्च जज्ञिरे ॥ योगेनादिश्य सद्धर्मं कृत्वा योगगतिं गताः ॥३६॥
jaTImuNDI zikhaNDI ca arddhamuNDazca jajJire ॥ yogenAdizya saddharmaM kRtvA yogagatiM gatAH ॥36॥
There were born Jaṭin, Muṇḍin, Sikhaṇḍin ॥ Śikhaṇḍin॥ and Ardhamuṇḍa. By means of Yoga they imparted good virtue and attained the goal of Yoga.

evaM saMkSepataH proktaH sadyAdInAM samudbhavaH ॥ sanatkumAra sarvajJa lokAnAM hitakAmyayA ॥37॥
Thus I have succinctly narrated the origin of Sadyojāta and others, O Sanatkumāra, O omniscient one, being desirous of the welfare of all the worlds.

atha teSAM mahAprAjJa vyavahAraM yathAyatham ॥ trilokahitakAraM hi sarvaM brahmANDasaMsthitam॥38॥
Then, O intelligent one, their dealings are beneficial to the three worlds and everything that is existent in the universe.

IzAnaH puruSo ghoro vAmasaMjJastathaiva ca ॥ brahmasaMjJo mahezasya mUrtayaH paMca vizrutAH ॥39॥
The five famous forms of Maheśa are thus named Īśāna, Puruṣa, Aghora, Vāma and Brahman. (also see Appendix on the five faces of Śiva)

He who reads and listens to the origin of Sadyojāta and others, enjoys all desires and attains the ultimate goal.
