sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zRNu vyAsa susaMprItyA caritaM paramezituH ॥ yathAvadhItsvapriyayA daityamuddizya saMjJayA ॥ 1 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: O Vyāsa, listen with pleasure to the story of the great lord how he killed through his beloved a Daitya whom he indicated by a sign.

आस्तां पुरा महादैत्यो विदलोत्पलसंज्ञकौ ॥ अपुंवध्यौ महावीरौ सुदृप्तौ वरतो विधेः ॥२॥
AstAM purA mahAdaityo vidalotpalasaMjJakau ॥ apuMvadhyau mahAvIrau sudRptau varato vidheH ॥2॥
Formerly there were two great Daityas—Vidala and Utpala. They were great heroes, puffed up by the boon from Brahmā that they could not be slain by a man.

tRNIkRtatrijagatI puruSAbhyAM svadorba lAt ॥ tAbhyAM sarve surA brahman daityAbhyAM nirjitA raNe ॥3॥
O Brahmin, the gods had been defeated in the battle by the two Daityas who by the strength of their arms considered the people of the three worlds as insignificant as the blade of grass.

ताभ्यां पराजिता देवा विधेस्ते शरणं गताः ॥ नत्वा तं विधिवत्सर्वे कथयामासुरादरात ॥ ४ ॥
tAbhyAM parAjitA devA vidheste zaraNaM gatAH ॥ natvA taM vidhivatsarve kathayAmAsurAdarAta ॥ 4 ॥
Defeated by them, the gods sought refuge in Brahmā. After bowing to him duly they submitted to him respectfully.

iti brahmA hyavocattAn devyA vadhyau ca tau dhruvam ॥ dhairyyaM kuruta saMsmRtya sazivaM zivamAdarAt ॥ 5 ॥
On hearing their account Brahmā said : They will surely be slain by the goddess. Be bold. Remember Śiva and Pārvatī respectfully

भक्तवत्सलनामासौ सशिवश्शंकरश्शिवः ॥ शं करिष्यत्यदीर्घेण कालेन परमेश्वरः ॥ ६ ॥
bhaktavatsalanAmAsau sazivazzaMkarazzivaH ॥ zaM kariSyatyadIrgheNa kAlena paramezvaraH ॥ 6 ॥
Śiva is auspicious, benevolent favourably disposed to his devotees. The supreme god will bring about welfare ere long.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktvA tAMstato brahmA tUSNImAsIcchivaM smaran ॥ tepi devA mudaM prApya svaMsvaM dhAma yayustadA ॥7॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying this, Brahmā kept quiet remembering Śiva. The gods too returned to their respective abodes rejoicingly.

अथ नारददेवर्षिश्शिवप्रेरणया तदा ॥ गत्वा तदीयभवनं शिवासौंदर्यमाजगौ ॥८॥
atha nAradadevarSizzivapreraNayA tadA ॥ gatvA tadIyabhavanaM zivAsauMdaryamAjagau ॥8॥
Then at the behest of Śiva, the celestial sage Nārada went to the abode of the Daityas and sang the glory of the beauty of Pārvatī.

zrutvA tadvacanaM daityAvAstAM mAyAvimohitau ॥ devIM parijihIrSU tau viSameSu prapIDitau ॥9॥
On hearing his words the two Daityas were deluded by deception. Afflicted by the god of lust they desired to abduct the goddess.

vicArayAmAsatustau kadA kutra zivA ca sA ॥ bhaviSyati vidheH prAptodayAnnAviti sarvadA ॥ 2-5-59-10 ॥
They thought to themselves where and when they would obtain Pārvatī at the rise of their good fortune.

ekasminsamaye zaMbhurvijahAra sulIlayA ॥ kautukenaiva cikrIDe zivA kandukalIlayA ॥ 11 ॥
Once Śiva was engaged in sports. Pārvatī too was playing with a ball along with her friends in the presence of Śiva.

With his friends with great pleasure in the presence of Lord Shiva in curiosity.

At times she looked up. At times she displayed the lightness of limbs. At times when she took deep breaths, bees hovered round her enticed by the fragrance. At times the bees made her eyes agitated.

bhrazyaddhammillasanmAlyasvapurIkRtabhUmikA ॥ svidyatkapolapatrAlIsravadaMbukaNojjvalA ॥ 14 ॥
Flowers from her tresses fell on the ground in front of her. Her cheeks were perspiring. Drops of sweat dripping from the paintings on her cheek brightened up.

sphuTaccolAMzukapathatiryadaMgaprabhAvRtA ॥ ullasatkaMdukAsphAlAtizroNitakarAmbujA ॥ 15 ॥
The lustre of her body spread all round through the partings of her gown. By exerting her too much in beating the ball her red hand became redder than the red lotus.

कंदुकानुगसद्दृष्टिनर्तितभ्रूलतांचला ॥ मृडानी किल खेलंती ददृशे जगदम्बिका ॥ १६ ॥
kaMdukAnugasaddRSTinartitabhrUlatAMcalA ॥ mRDAnI kila khelaMtI dadRze jagadambikA ॥ 16 ॥
When the ball bounced, her eyes too followed it making the brows to dance thereby. As the goddess mother of the universe was playing, she was seen by the Daityas who were going by the aerial path.

aMtarikSacarAbhyAM ca ditijAbhyAM kaTA kSitA ॥ kroDIkRtAbhyAmiva vai samupasthitamRtyunA ॥17॥
The battlefield was shattered by the two sky-roaming Daityas (demons), as if death itself had appeared before them in the form of two enraged beings.

विदलोत्पलसंज्ञाभ्यां दृप्ताभ्यां वरतो विधेः ॥ तृणीकृतत्रिजगती पुरुषाभ्यां स्वदोर्बलात् ॥ १८ ॥
vidalotpalasaMjJAbhyAM dRptAbhyAM varato vidheH ॥ tRNIkRtatrijagatI puruSAbhyAM svadorbalAt ॥ 18 ॥
They were the Daityas Vidala and Uptala who had become haughty by the boon of Brahmā and by the might of their arms thought the people of the three worlds as insignificant as the blades of grass.

devIM tAM saMjihIrSaMtau viSameSu prapIDitau ॥ diva utteratuH kSipraM mAyAM svIkRtya zAMbarIm ॥ 19 ॥
Desirous of abducting the goddess as they were tormented by the god of lust, they descended from the sky quickly after adapting the Śāmbarī magic skill.

dhRtvA pAriSadIM mAyAmAyAtAvaMbikAMtikam ॥ tAvatyaMtaM sudurvRttAvaticaMcalamAnasau ॥2-5-59-20॥
The two wicked ones of fickle mind approached Pārvatī in the guise of Śiva’s attendants.

अथ दुष्टनिहंत्रा वै सावज्ञेन हरेण तौ ॥ विज्ञातौ च क्षणादास्तां चांचल्याल्लोचनोद्भवात् ॥ २१ ॥
atha duSTanihaMtrA vai sAvajJena hareNa tau ॥ vijJAtau ca kSaNAdAstAM cAMcalyAllocanodbhavAt ॥ 21 ॥
By the excessive tremulousness of their eyes they were in a trice recognized by Śiva, the chastiser of and contemptuous towards the wicked.

कटाक्षिताथ देवेन दुर्गा दुर्गतिघातिनी ॥ दैत्याविमामिति गणौ नेति सर्वस्वरूपिणा ॥ २२ ॥
kaTAkSitAtha devena durgA durgatighAtinI ॥ daityAvimAmiti gaNau neti sarvasvarUpiNA ॥ 22 ॥
The lord shot a significant glance at Pārvatī the destroyer of miseries denoting that they were Daityas and not Gaṇas. They could assume any form.

अथ सा नेत्रसंज्ञां स्वस्वामिनस्तां बुबोध ह ॥ महाकौतुकिनस्तात शंकरस्य परेशितुः ॥२३॥
atha sA netrasaMjJAM svasvAminastAM bubodha ha ॥ mahAkautukinastAta zaMkarasya parezituH ॥23॥
O dear, she understood the sign of the eyes of her lord Śiva, the great lord who indulges in fancies.

ततो विज्ञाय संज्ञां तां सर्वज्ञार्द्धशरीरिणी ॥ तेनैव कंदुकेनाथ युगपन्निर्जघान तौ ॥२४॥
tato vijJAya saMjJAM tAM sarvajJArddhazarIriNI ॥ tenaiva kaMdukenAtha yugapannirjaghAna tau ॥24॥
Realising the significant glance, the goddess, the sharer of half the body of Śiva hit both of them simultaneously with the ball.

महाबलौ महादेव्या कंदुकेन समाहतौ ॥ परिभ्रम्य परिभ्रम्य तौ दुष्टौ विनिपेततुः ॥ २५ ॥
mahAbalau mahAdevyA kaMdukena samAhatau ॥ paribhramya paribhramya tau duSTau vinipetatuH ॥ 25 ॥
The powerful wicked Daityas hit by the ball whirled and whirled and fell on the ground.

वृन्तादिव फले पक्वे तालेनानिललोलिते ॥ दंभोलिना परिहते शृंगे इव महागिरेः ॥२६॥
vRntAdiva phale pakve tAlenAnilalolite ॥ daMbholinA parihate zRMge iva mahAgireH ॥26॥
After making the two Daityas fall like two ripe fruits from the palmyra tree when shaken by the wind,or like the two peaks of a great mountain struck by the thunderbolt.

tau nipAtya mahAdaityAvakAryakaraNodyatau ॥ tataH pariNatiM yAto liMgarUpeNa kaMdukaH॥27॥
As they had attempted to do an evil action, the ball changed itself into the phallic image.

कंदुकेश्वरसंज्ञां च तल्लिंगमभवत्तदा॥ ज्येष्ठेश्वरसमीपे तु सर्वदुष्टनिवारणम्॥२८॥
kaMdukezvarasaMjJAM ca talliMgamabhavattadA॥ jyeSThezvarasamIpe tu sarvaduSTanivAraNam॥28॥
That phallic image came to be known as Kandukeśvara. It is very near Jyeṣṭheśvara. It removes all the wicked things.

एतस्मिन्नेव समये हरिब्रह्मादयस्सुराः ॥ शिवाविर्भावमाज्ञाय ऋषयश्च समाययुः॥२९॥
etasminneva samaye haribrahmAdayassurAH ॥ zivAvirbhAvamAjJAya RSayazca samAyayuH॥29॥
At the same time, knowing the manifestation of Śiva, Viṣṇu. Brahmā, other gods and the sages came there.

अथ सर्वे सुराश्शम्भोर्वरान्प्राप्य तदाज्ञया॥ स्वधामानि ययुः प्रीतास्तथा काशीनिवासिनः॥2-5-59-३०॥
atha sarve surAzzambhorvarAnprApya tadAjJayA॥ svadhAmAni yayuH prItAstathA kAzInivAsinaH॥2-5-59-30॥
Then all the gods received boons from Śiva and at his bidding returned to their respective abodes delightedly. So were the residents of Kāśī blessed with the boons.

सांबिकं शंकरं दृष्ट्वा कृतांजलिपुटाश्च ते॥ प्रणम्य तुष्टुवुर्भक्त्या वाग्भिरिष्टाभिरादरात् ॥३१॥
sAMbikaM zaMkaraM dRSTvA kRtAMjalipuTAzca te॥ praNamya tuSTuvurbhaktyA vAgbhiriSTAbhirAdarAt ॥31॥
On seeing Śiva with Pārvatī they bowed to him with palms joined in reverence and eulogised him with devotion and pleasing words.

सांबिकोऽपि शिवो व्यास क्रीडित्वा सुविहारवित्॥ जगाम स्वालयं प्रीतस्सगणो भक्तवत्सलः ॥३२॥
sAMbiko'pi zivo vyAsa krIDitvA suvihAravit॥ jagAma svAlayaM prItassagaNo bhaktavatsalaH ॥32॥
O Vyāsa, Śiva and Pārvatī too, went delightedly to their abode. The lord favourably disposed to his devotees, an expert in divine sports, had already had his game.

कंदुकेश्वरलिंगं च काश्यां दुष्टनिबर्हणम्॥ भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं सर्वकामदं सर्वदा सताम् ॥।३३॥
kaMdukezvaraliMgaM ca kAzyAM duSTanibarhaNam॥ bhuktimuktipradaM sarvakAmadaM sarvadA satAm ॥।33॥
The Kandukeśvara phallic image at Kāśī destroys the wicked, yields worldly pleasures and salvation. Upon the good it bestows desires always.

इदमाख्यानमतुलं शृणुयाद्यो मुदान्वितः ॥ श्रावयेद्वा पठेद्यश्च तस्य दुःखभयं कुतः ॥ ३४ ॥
idamAkhyAnamatulaM zRNuyAdyo mudAnvitaH ॥ zrAvayedvA paThedyazca tasya duHkhabhayaM kutaH ॥ 34 ॥
Where is the cause of fear to him who hears this incomparable narrative with joy, narrates or reads it?

इह सर्वसुखं भुक्त्वा नानाविधमनुत्तमम् ॥ परत्र लभते दिव्यां गतिं वै देवदुर्लभाम् ॥ ३५ ॥
iha sarvasukhaM bhuktvA nAnAvidhamanuttamam ॥ paratra labhate divyAM gatiM vai devadurlabhAm ॥ 35 ॥
He enjoys pleasures of various kinds and of excellent nature. Hereafter he attains the divine goal inaccessible even to the gods.

इति तं वर्णितं तात चरितं परमाद्भुतम् ॥ शिवयोर्भक्तवात्सल्यसूचकं शिवदं सताम् ॥ ३६ ॥
iti taM varNitaM tAta caritaM paramAdbhutam ॥ zivayorbhaktavAtsalyasUcakaM zivadaM satAm ॥ 36 ॥
O dear, I have thus narrated to you the wonderful story of Śiva and Pārvatī. It indicates their favouritism to the devotees. It bestows welfare to the good.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वामंत्र्य तं व्यासं तन्नुतो मद्वरात्मजः ॥ ययौ विहायसा काशीं चरितं शशिमौलिनः ॥३७॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityuktvAmaMtrya taM vyAsaM tannuto madvarAtmajaH ॥ yayau vihAyasA kAzIM caritaM zazimaulinaH ॥37॥
Brahmā said: After narrating the story of the moon-crested lord, my excellent son, Sanatkumāra took leave of Vyāsa. Duly honoured by him he then went to Kāśī by the aerial path.

युद्धखंडमिदं प्रोक्तं मया ते मुनिसत्तम ॥ रौद्रीयसंहितामध्ये सर्वकामफलप्रदम् ॥३८॥
yuddhakhaMDamidaM proktaM mayA te munisattama ॥ raudrIyasaMhitAmadhye sarvakAmaphalapradam ॥38॥
Thus the section called “Yuddha” has been narrated to you, O excellent sage. In the Compendium called Rudra, it bestows all cherished desires.

इयं हि संहिता रौद्री सम्पूर्णा वर्णिता मया ॥ सदाशिवप्रियतरा भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदा ॥३९॥
iyaM hi saMhitA raudrI sampUrNA varNitA mayA ॥ sadAzivapriyatarA bhuktimuktiphalapradA ॥39॥
Thus the whole of Rudrasaṃhitā has been explained by me. It is pleasing to Śiva always. It yields enjoyment here and liberation hereafter.

इमां यश्च पठेन्नित्यं शत्रुबाधानिवारिकाम् ॥ सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति ततो मुक्तिं लभेत ना ॥2-5-59-४०॥
imAM yazca paThennityaM zatrubAdhAnivArikAm ॥ sarvAnkAmAnavApnoti tato muktiM labheta nA ॥2-5-59-40॥
The man who reads this Saṃhitā that wards off harassment from enemies shall attain all desires. Thereafter he shall attain liberation.

sUta uvAca ॥ iti brahmasutazzrutvA pitrA zivayazaH param ॥ zatanAmApya zaMbhozca kRtArtho'bhUcchivAnugaH ॥41॥
Sūta said: Thus Brahmā’s son Nārada heard from his father the great glory of Śiva. Śatanāmā too was satisfied and became a follower of Śiva.

brahmanAradasamvAdaH sampUrNaH kathito mayA ॥ zivassarvapradhAno hi kiM bhUyazzrotumicchasi ॥42॥
