sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zRNu vyAsa pravakSyAmi caritaM zazimaulinaH ॥ yathA duMdubhinirhrAdamavadhIdditijaM haraH ॥ 1 ॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O Vyāsa, listen. I shall narrate the story of the moon-crested lord Śiva how he slew the Daitya Dundubhinirhrāda.

hiraNyAkSe hate daitye ditiputre mahAbale ॥ viSNudevena kAlena prApa dukhaM pahadditiH? ॥2 ॥
When the Daitya Hiraṇyākṣa, son of Diti, of great strength was killed by Viṣṇu, Diti remained griefstricken for a long time.

daityo duMdubhinirhrAdo duSTaH prahlAdamAtulaH ॥ sAMtvayAmAsa tAM vAgbhirduHkhitAM devaduHkhadaH ॥3॥
The wicked Daitya named Dundubhinirhrāda, the uncle of Prahlāda, the oppressor of the gods, consoled the dejected mother with the words.

atha daityassa mAyAvI ditimAzvAsya daityarAT ॥ devAH kathaM sujeyAH syurityupAyamarcitayat ॥ 4 ॥
After consoling Diti, the king of Daityas, an expert in using Māyā began to think of the ways and means of conquering the gods easily.

devaizca ghAtito vIro hiraNyAkSo mahAsuraH ॥ viSNunA ca saha bhrAtrA sacchalairdetyavairibhiH ॥ 5 ॥
The great Asura Hiraṇyākṣa along with his brother has been killed through Viṣṇu by the gods, the enemies of Daityas, employing deceitful means.

kiMbalAzca kimAhArA kimAdhArA hi nirjarAH ॥ mayA kathaM sujeyAssyurityupAyamaciMtayat ॥ 6 ॥
What is the strength of the gods? What is their diet? What is their support? How can the gods be easily vanquished by me?” Thinking like this he tried to find out the ways and means.

विचार्य बहुशो दैत्यस्तत्त्वं विज्ञाय निश्चितम् ॥ अवश्यमग्रजन्मानो हेतवोऽत्र विचारतः ॥ ७ ॥
vicArya bahuzo daityastattvaM vijJAya nizcitam ॥ avazyamagrajanmAno hetavo'tra vicArataH ॥ 7 ॥
Thinking deeply in diverse ways the Daitya came to the conclusion that the brāhmaṇas were the cause of the trouble.

brAhmaNAnhaMtumasakRdanvadhAvata vai tataH ॥ daityo dundubhinirhrAdo devavairI mahAkhalaH ॥8॥
The Daitya Dundubhinirhrāda, the most wicked enemy of the gods, ran after the brahmins to kill them.

यतः क्रतुभुजो देवाः क्रतवो वेदसंभवाः॥ ते वेदा ब्राह्मणाधारास्ततो देवबलं द्विजाः॥९॥
yataH kratubhujo devAH kratavo vedasaMbhavAH॥ te vedA brAhmaNAdhArAstato devabalaM dvijAH॥9॥
Since the gods maintain themselves on sacrifices, sacrifices are born of the Vedas and the Vedas are the custody of the brāhmaṇas, so the brāhmaṇas constitute the strength of the gods.

निश्चितं ब्राह्मणाधारास्सर्वे वेदास्सवासवाः॥ गीर्वाणा ब्राह्मणबला नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥2-5-58-१०॥
nizcitaM brAhmaNAdhArAssarve vedAssavAsavAH॥ gIrvANA brAhmaNabalA nAtra kAryA vicAraNA ॥2-5-58-10॥
Certainly the gods including Indra are supported by the brāhmaṇas. The gods gain their strength from the brāhmaṇas. There is no doubt about this.

ब्राह्मणा यदि नष्टास्स्युर्वेदा नष्टास्ततस्त्वयम्॥ अतस्तेषु प्रणष्टेषु विनष्टाः सततं सुराः॥११॥
brAhmaNA yadi naSTAssyurvedA naSTAstatastvayam॥ atasteSu praNaSTeSu vinaSTAH satataM surAH॥11॥
If the brāhmaṇas are destroyed the Vedas will perish. If they are destroyed the gods will also perish.

यज्ञेषु नाशं गच्छत्सु हताहारास्ततस्सुराः॥ निर्बलास्सुखजय्याः स्युर्निर्जितेषु सुरेष्वथ।१२॥
yajJeSu nAzaM gacchatsu hatAhArAstatassurAH॥ nirbalAssukhajayyAH syurnirjiteSu sureSvatha।12॥
If the sacrifices are destroyed, the gods will lose their food. They will grow weaker and be easily conquered.

अहमेव भविष्यामि मान्यस्त्रिजगतीपतिः ॥ अहरिष्यामि देवा नामक्षयास्सर्वसंपदः ॥ १३ ॥
ahameva bhaviSyAmi mAnyastrijagatIpatiH ॥ ahariSyAmi devA nAmakSayAssarvasaMpadaH ॥ 13 ॥
When the gods are conquered I shall become the sole honourable lord of the three worlds. I shall then confiscate the everlasting riches of the gods.

निर्वेक्ष्यामि सुखान्येव राज्ये निहतकंटके ॥ इति निश्चित्य दुर्बुद्धिः पुनश्चिंतितवान्खलः ॥१४॥
nirvekSyAmi sukhAnyeva rAjye nihatakaMTake ॥ iti nizcitya durbuddhiH punazciMtitavAnkhalaH ॥14॥
I shall enjoy happiness in my kingdom freed of thorns. After thinking like this the wicked Daitya thought again.

द्विजाः क्व संति भूयांसो ब्रह्मतेजोतिबृंहिता॥ श्रुत्यध्यनसंपन्नास्तपोबलसमन्विताः॥१५॥
dvijAH kva saMti bhUyAMso brahmatejotibRMhitA॥ zrutyadhyanasaMpannAstapobalasamanvitAH॥15॥
Where are these brāhmaṇas in plenty—the brāhmaṇas strengthened by the splendour of the Brahman, well versed in the study of the Vedas and possessing the strength of penance?

भूयसां ब्राह्मणानां तु स्थानं वाराणसी खलु ॥ तामादावुपसंहृत्य यायां तीर्थांतरं ततः ॥१६॥
bhUyasAM brAhmaNAnAM tu sthAnaM vArANasI khalu ॥ tAmAdAvupasaMhRtya yAyAM tIrthAMtaraM tataH ॥16॥
It is Vārāṇasī indeed that is the place of many brāhmaṇas. I shall finish that first and then go to other holy centres.

यत्र यत्र हि तीर्थेषु यत्र यत्राश्रमेषु च ॥ संति सर्वेऽग्रजन्मानस्ते मयाद्यास्समंततः ॥ १७ ॥
yatra yatra hi tIrtheSu yatra yatrAzrameSu ca ॥ saMti sarve'grajanmAnaste mayAdyAssamaMtataH ॥ 17 ॥
In holy centres or hermitages wherever these brāhmaṇas live they shall be devoured by me.

इति दुंदुभिनिर्ह्रादो मतिं कृत्वा कुलोचिताम् ॥ प्राप्यापि काशीं दुर्वृत्तो मायावी न्यवधीद्द्विजान् ॥ १८ ॥
iti duMdubhinirhrAdo matiM kRtvA kulocitAm ॥ prApyApi kAzIM durvRtto mAyAvI nyavadhIddvijAn ॥ 18 ॥
After thinking thus in accordance with the nature of his race, Dundubhinirhrāda went to Kāśī and he, the wicked wielder of Māyas, killed the brāhmaṇas.

समित्कुशान्समादातुं यत्र यांति द्विजोत्तमाः ॥ अरण्ये तत्र तान्सर्वान्स भक्षयति दुर्मतिः ॥ १९ ॥
samitkuzAnsamAdAtuM yatra yAMti dvijottamAH ॥ araNye tatra tAnsarvAnsa bhakSayati durmatiH ॥ 19 ॥
When the excellent brāhmaṇas went to the forest to fetch sacrificial twigs and the Darbha grass, the wicked Dānava used to eat them there.

यथा कोऽपि न वेत्त्येवं तथाऽच्छन्नोऽभवत्पुनः ॥ वने वनेचरो भूत्वा यादोरूपो जलाशये ॥2-5-58-२०॥
yathA ko'pi na vettyevaM tathA'cchanno'bhavatpunaH ॥ vane vanecaro bhUtvA yAdorUpo jalAzaye ॥2-5-58-20॥
After that he used to lie hidden so that nobody could detect him. In the forest he used to roam about like a forest-dweller and in the waters he used to take the form of an aquatic animal.

अदृश्यरूपी मायावी देवानामप्यगोचरः ॥ दिवा ध्यानपरस्तिष्ठेन्मुनिवन्मुनिमध्यगः ॥ २१ ॥
adRzyarUpI mAyAvI devAnAmapyagocaraH ॥ divA dhyAnaparastiSThenmunivanmunimadhyagaH ॥ 21 ॥
He was invisible in form. He wielded the art of deception. He could not be seen even by the gods.

प्रवेशमुटजानां च निर्गमं हि विलोकयन् ॥ यामिन्यां व्याघ्ररूपेणाभक्षयद्ब्राह्मणान्बहून् ॥ २२ ॥
pravezamuTajAnAM ca nirgamaM hi vilokayan ॥ yAminyAM vyAghrarUpeNAbhakSayadbrAhmaNAnbahUn ॥ 22 ॥
During the day he stood in the midst of sages engaged in meditation but observing the ingress and egress of persons in the hut. But at night he took the form of a tiger and ate many of them.

निश्शंकम्भक्षयत्येवं न त्यजत्यपि कीकशम् ॥ इत्थं निपातितास्तेन विप्रा दुष्टेन भूरिशः ॥ २३ ॥
nizzaMkambhakSayatyevaM na tyajatyapi kIkazam ॥ itthaM nipAtitAstena viprA duSTena bhUrizaH ॥ 23 ॥

ekadA zivarAtrau tu bhaktastveko nijoTaje ॥ saparyAM devadevasya kRtvA dhyAnasthito'bhavat ॥ 24 ॥
He used to eat unhesitatingly never leaving even a bone behind. Thus many brāhmaṇas were annihilated by him in this way.

स च दुंदुभिनिर्ह्रादो दैत्येन्द्रो बलदर्पितः ॥ व्याघ्ररूपं समास्थाय तमादातुं मतिं दधे ॥ २५ ॥
sa ca duMdubhinirhrAdo daityendro baladarpitaH ॥ vyAghrarUpaM samAsthAya tamAdAtuM matiM dadhe ॥ 25 ॥
The lord of Daityas Dundubhinirhrāda, proud of his strength, assumed the form of a tiger and wanted to seize him.

तं भक्तं ध्यानमापन्नं दृढचित्तं शिवेक्षणे ॥ कृतास्त्रमन्त्रविन्यासं तं क्रांतुमशकन्न सः ॥ २६ ॥
taM bhaktaM dhyAnamApannaM dRDhacittaM zivekSaNe ॥ kRtAstramantravinyAsaM taM krAMtumazakanna saH ॥ 26 ॥
As the devotee was in meditation with a mind concentrated on Śiva and as he had fixed the Astramantra, the Daitya could not attack him.

अथ सर्वं गतश्शम्भुर्ज्ञात्वा तस्याशयं हरः ॥ दैत्यस्य दुष्टरूपस्य वधाय विदधे धियम् ॥ २७ ॥
atha sarvaM gatazzambhurjJAtvA tasyAzayaM haraH ॥ daityasya duSTarUpasya vadhAya vidadhe dhiyam ॥ 27 ॥
Śiva, the omnipresent lord, knew his evil intention and decided to slay the Daitya.

यावदादित्सति व्याघ्रस्तावदाविरभूद्धरः ॥ जगद्रक्षामणिस्त्र्यक्षो भक्तरक्षणदक्षधीः ॥ २८ ॥
yAvadAditsati vyAghrastAvadAvirabhUddharaH ॥ jagadrakSAmaNistryakSo bhaktarakSaNadakSadhIH ॥ 28 ॥
While the Daitya in the form of the tiger was about to snatch the devotee, Śiva appeared before him. The three-eyed lord Śiva is very keen in intellect in saving the devotees, nay in protecting the universe.

रुद्रमायांतमालोक्य तद्भक्तार्चितलिंगतः ॥ दैत्यस्तेनैव रूपेण ववृधे भूधरोपमः ॥ २९ ॥
rudramAyAMtamAlokya tadbhaktArcitaliMgataH ॥ daityastenaiva rUpeNa vavRdhe bhUdharopamaH ॥ 29 ॥
On seeing Śiva coming out of the phallic image worshipped by the devotee, the Daitya in the form of a tiger increased in size like a big mountain.

सावज्ञमथ सर्वज्ञं यावत्पश्यति दानवः ॥ तावदायातमादाय कक्षायंत्रे न्यपीडयत् ॥ 2-5-58-३० ॥
sAvajJamatha sarvajJaM yAvatpazyati dAnavaH ॥ tAvadAyAtamAdAya kakSAyaMtre nyapIDayat ॥ 2-5-58-30 ॥
The Dānava glanced with a contemptuous look at Śiva but the lord caught him and pressed him under his armpit.

पंचास्यस्त्वथ पंचास्यं मुष्ट्या मूर्द्धन्यताडयत॥ भक्तवत्सलनामासौ वज्रादपि कठोरया॥३१॥
paMcAsyastvatha paMcAsyaM muSTyA mUrddhanyatADayata॥ bhaktavatsalanAmAsau vajrAdapi kaThorayA॥31॥
The five-faced lord favourably disposd to his devotees hit the tiger on its head with his fist harder than thunderbolt.

स तेन मुष्टिघातेन कक्षानिष्पेषणेन च ॥ अत्यार्तमारटद्व्याघ्रो रोदसीं पूरयन्मृतः ॥ ३२ ॥
sa tena muSTighAtena kakSAniSpeSaNena ca ॥ atyArtamAraTadvyAghro rodasIM pUrayanmRtaH ॥ 32 ॥
By the blow of the fist and the pressure at the armpit the tiger groaned aloud in great distress filling heaven and earth with the sound and died.

तेन नादेन महता संप्रवेपितमानसाः ॥ तपोधनास्समाजग्मुर्निशि शब्दानुसारतः ॥३३॥
tena nAdena mahatA saMpravepitamAnasAH ॥ tapodhanAssamAjagmurnizi zabdAnusArataH ॥33॥
Agitated in their minds by the loud sound, the ascetics came there in the night itself following the track of the sound.

अत्रेश्वरं समालोक्य कक्षीकृतमृगेश्वरम् ॥ तुष्टुवुः प्रणतास्सर्वे शर्वं जयजयाक्षरैः ॥३४॥
atrezvaraM samAlokya kakSIkRtamRgezvaram ॥ tuSTuvuH praNatAssarve zarvaM jayajayAkSaraiH ॥34॥
On seeing the lord there with the lord of the beasts in his armpit they bowed to him. They eulogised him with the words of “Victory, Victory.”

ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः ॥ परित्राताः परित्राताः प्रत्यूहाद्दारुणादितः ॥ अनुग्रहं कुरुष्वेश तिष्ठात्रैव जगद्गुरो ॥३५॥
brAhmaNA UcuH ॥ paritrAtAH paritrAtAH pratyUhAddAruNAditaH ॥ anugrahaM kuruSveza tiSThAtraiva jagadguro ॥35॥
The brahmins said: We are saved, O, we are saved from this terrible obstacle. O lord, please bless us. O preceptor of the universe stay here alone.

अनेनैव स्वरूपेण व्याघ्रेश इति नामतः ॥ कुरु रक्षां महादेव ज्येष्ठस्थानस्य सर्वदा ॥३६॥
anenaiva svarUpeNa vyAghreza iti nAmataH ॥ kuru rakSAM mahAdeva jyeSThasthAnasya sarvadA ॥36॥
O great lord, in this self-same form in the name of the lord of the tiger offer protection. Let this place remain sacred always.

अन्येभ्यो ह्युपसर्गेभ्यो रक्ष नस्तीर्थवासिनः ॥ दुष्टानष्टास्य? गौरीश भक्तेभ्यो देहि चाभयम् ॥ ॥ ३७ ॥
anyebhyo hyupasargebhyo rakSa nastIrthavAsinaH ॥ duSTAnaSTAsya? gaurIza bhaktebhyo dehi cAbhayam ॥ ॥ 37 ॥
Save us the dwellers in this holy centre from other mishaps too. O lord of Pārvatī, leaving the wicked ones offer fearlessness to your devotees.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां भक्तानां चन्द्रशेखरः ॥ तथेत्युक्त्वा पुनः प्राह स भक्तान्भक्तवत्सलः ॥ ३८ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacasteSAM bhaktAnAM candrazekharaH ॥ tathetyuktvA punaH prAha sa bhaktAnbhaktavatsalaH ॥ 38 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing the words of the devotees, the moon-crested lord who is favourably disposed to the devotees said affirmatively and told the devotees again.

महेश्वर उवाच ॥ यो मामनेन रूपेण द्रक्ष्यति श्रद्धयात्र वै ॥ तस्योपसर्गसंधानं पातयिष्याम्यसंशयम् ॥ ३९ ॥
mahezvara uvAca ॥ yo mAmanena rUpeNa drakSyati zraddhayAtra vai ॥ tasyopasargasaMdhAnaM pAtayiSyAmyasaMzayam ॥ 39 ॥
Lord Śiva said: If any one sees me here in this form with faith, I will undoubtedly remove his torments and mishaps.

मच्चरित्रमिदं श्रुत्वा स्मृत्वा लिंगमिदं हृदि ॥ संग्रामे प्रविशन्मर्त्यो जयमाप्नोत्यसंशयम् ॥2-5-58-४०॥

The gods said: O lord Śiva, lord of the gods, remover of the distress of your devotees, be victorious. We the gods have been saved by killing this demon.

O fond of devotees, you shall protect them always. O lord of the gods, wicked men shall be slain by you, O lord of all.

On hearing these words of the gods, lord Śiva became delighted. After saying ‘yes’ he merged into the phallic image.

The gods, thus surprised returned to their respective abodes and rejoiced. The brahmins too in great delight returned the way they came.

This narrative is incomparable as it contains the nectar-like words of the divine sports of Śiva. It is conducive to the attainment of heaven, fame and longevity. It increases sons and grandsons.

paraM bhaktipradaM dhanyaM zivaprItikaraM zivam॥ paramajJAnadaM ramyaM vikAraharaNaM param ॥ 2-5-58-50 ॥
It yields great devotion and bliss. It is auspicious and increases the pleasure of Śiva. It yields supreme know ledge. It is beautiful and removes all aberrations.
