sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zRNu vyAsa mahApremNA caritaM zazimaulinaH ॥ yathA'vadhIttrizUlena dAnavendraM gajAsuram ॥1॥
Sanatkumāra said: O Vyāsa, listen with great devotion to the story of moon-crested lord, how he killed Gajāsura, the lord of Dānavas, by means of his trident.

dAnave nihate devyA samare mahiSAsure ॥ devAnAM ca hitArthAya purA devAH sukhaM yayuH ॥ 2 ॥
Formerly when the Asura Mahiṣa was killed in battle by the goddess for the welfare of the gods, they became very happy.

tasya putro mahAvIro munIzvara gajAsuraH ॥ piturvadhaM hi saMsmRtya kRtaM devyA surArthanAt ॥ 3 ॥
O great sage, his son the great hero Gajāsura could not forget the slaying of his father by the goddess at the request of the gods and hence remembered that enmity.

स तद्वैरमनुस्मृत्य तपोर्थं गतवान्वने ॥ समुद्दिश्य विधिं प्रीत्या तताप परमं तपः ॥ ४ ॥
sa tadvairamanusmRtya taporthaM gatavAnvane ॥ samuddizya vidhiM prItyA tatApa paramaM tapaH ॥ 4 ॥
He therefore went to the forest for undertaking penance. Interestingly he performed penance meditating on Brahma.

avadhyohaM bhaviSyAmi strIpuMsaiH kAmanirjitaH ॥ saMvicAryeti manasA'bhUttaporatamAnasaH ॥5॥
I shall not be killed by men or women overwhelmed by lust. Thinking thus in his mind he directed his attention to austerities.

sa tepe himavaddroNyAM tapaH paramadAru Nam ॥ UrddhvabAhurnabhodRSTiH pAdAMguSThAzritAvaniH ॥ 6 ॥
He performed a severe penance in a valley on the Himālaya mountain. He kept his arms lifted. He fixed his eyes at the sky. He stood on the ground on the two big toes.

jaTAbhAraissa vai reje pralayArka ivAMzubhiH ॥ mahiSAsuraputro'sau gajAsura udAradhIH ॥ 7 ॥
With plenty of matted tresses of hair the benevolent Gajāsura, the son of Mahiṣa shone with his refulgence like the sun at the time of dissolution.

tasya mUrdhnaH samudbhUtassadhUmognistapomayaH ॥ tiryagUrdhvamadholokAstApayanviSvagIritaH ॥ 8 ॥
The fire in the form of penance originating from his head filled with smoke spread all round to the worlds above, below and on the sides scorching them.

cukSubhurnadyudanvaMtazcAgnermUrddhasamudbhavAt ॥ nipetussagrahAstArA jajvaluzca dizo daza ॥ 9 ॥
The rivers and the seas were agitated by the fire originating from his head. The stars fell along with the planets. The ten quarters blazed.

tena taptAsturAssarve divaM tyaktvA savAsavAH ॥ brahmalokaM yayurvijJApayAmAsuzcacAla bhUH ॥2-5-57-10॥
The gods scorched by the fire left heaven and went to Brahma’s world along with Indra and submitted to him. The earth quaked.

devA UcuH ॥ vidhe gajAsuratapastaptA vayamathAkulAH ॥ na zaknumo divi sthAtumataste zaraNaM gatAH ॥ 11 ॥
The gods said: O Brahmā, we are agitated on being scorched by the penance of Gajāsura. We are unable to stay in heaven. Hence we seek refuge in you.

विधेह्युपशमं तस्य चान्याञ्जीवयितुं कृपा ॥ लोका नंक्ष्यत्यन्यथा हि सत्यंसत्यं ब्रुवामहे ॥१२॥
vidhehyupazamaM tasya cAnyAJjIvayituM kRpA ॥ lokA naMkSyatyanyathA hi satyaMsatyaM bruvAmahe ॥12॥
Make it subside and find out a merciful remedy to enliven others. Otherwise the worlds will perish. Truth. It is the truth that we speak.

इति विज्ञापितो देवैर्वासवाद्यैस्स आत्मभूः ॥ भृगुदक्षादिभिर्ब्रह्मा ययौ दैत्यवराश्रमम् ॥ १३ ॥
iti vijJApito devairvAsavAdyaissa AtmabhUH ॥ bhRgudakSAdibhirbrahmA yayau daityavarAzramam ॥ 13 ॥
Thus informed by the gods including Indra and others the selfborn deity Brahmā went to the hermitage of the excellent Daitya along with Bhṛgu, Dakṣa and others.

tapaMtaM tapasA lokA nyathA'bhrApihitaM divi ॥ vilakSya vismitaH prAha vihasansRSTikArakaH ॥ 14 ॥
On seeing him scorching the heaven and the worlds by his penance, the surprised creator laughed and said.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ दैत्येन्द्र तपस्सिद्धोसि माहिषे ॥ प्राप्तोऽहं वरदस्तात वरं वृणु यथेप्सितम्॥१५॥
brahmovAca ॥ uttiSThottiSTha daityendra tapassiddhosi mAhiSe ॥ prApto'haM varadastAta varaM vRNu yathepsitam॥15॥
Brahmā said: O lord of Daityas, stand up, stand up. O son of Mahiṣa, you have achieved perfection in penance. O dear one, I, the granter of boons, have come. Choose your boon as you wish.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ उत्थायोत्थाय दैत्येन्द्र ईक्षमाणो दृशा विभुम्॥ गिरा गद्गदया प्रीतोऽगृणाद्देवं स माहिषिः ॥।१६ ।
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ utthAyotthAya daityendra IkSamANo dRzA vibhum॥ girA gadgadayA prIto'gRNAddevaM sa mAhiSiH ॥।16 ।
Sanatkumāra said: Getting up in a hurry, the son of Mahiṣa, the lord of Daityas glanced at the lord and praised him lovingly with choking words.

गजासुर उवाच ॥ नमस्ते देवदेवेश यदि दास्यसि मे वरम्॥ अवध्योऽहं भवेयं वै स्त्रीपुंसैः कामनिर्जितैः ॥१७॥ महाबलो महावीर्योऽजेयो देवादिभिस्सदा ॥
gajAsura uvAca ॥ namaste devadeveza yadi dAsyasi me varam॥ avadhyo'haM bhaveyaM vai strIpuMsaiH kAmanirjitaiH ॥17॥ mahAbalo mahAvIryo'jeyo devAdibhissadA ॥
Gajāsura said: O lord, O lord of the gods, if you are going to grant me a boon let me be immune from death by men or women overwhelmed by lust.

महाबलो महावीर्योऽजेयो देवादिभिस्सदा ॥ सर्वेषां लोकपालानां निखिलर्द्धिसुभुग्विभो ॥१८॥
mahAbalo mahAvIryo'jeyo devAdibhissadA ॥ sarveSAM lokapAlAnAM nikhilarddhisubhugvibho ॥18॥
Let me be very powerful, valorous and invincible to the gods, the guardians of the worlds and others for ever. Let me enjoy all prosperities.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ एवं वृतश्शतधृतिर्दानवेन स तेन वै ॥ प्रादात्तत्तपसा प्रीतो वरं तस्य सुदुर्लभम् ॥१९॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ evaM vRtazzatadhRtirdAnavena sa tena vai ॥ prAdAttattapasA prIto varaM tasya sudurlabham ॥19॥
Thus requested by the Dānava, Brahmā who was delighted by his penance granted him the rare boon.

evaM labdhavaro daityo mAhiSizca gajAsuraH ॥ suprasannamanAsso'tha svadhAma pratyapadyata ॥2-5-57-20 ॥
Securing the boons thus, the Daitya Gajāsura the son of Mahiṣa, returned to his abode with a happy mind.

स विजित्य दिशस्सर्वा लोकांश्च त्रीन्महासुरः ॥ देवासुरमनुष्येन्द्रान्गंधर्वगरुडोरगान् ॥ २१ ॥
sa vijitya dizassarvA lokAMzca trInmahAsuraH ॥ devAsuramanuSyendrAngaMdharvagaruDoragAn ॥ 21 ॥
he great Asura conquered all the quarters, the three worlds, the gods, Asuras, human beings, kings, Gandharvas, Garuḍa, serpents and others. He made them subservient to him.

इत्यादीन्निखिलाञ्जित्वा वशमानीय विश्वजित् ॥ जहार लोकपालानां स्थानानि सह तेजसा ॥ २२ ॥
ityAdInnikhilAJjitvA vazamAnIya vizvajit ॥ jahAra lokapAlAnAM sthAnAni saha tejasA ॥ 22 ॥
He became the conqueror of the universe. He usurped the places of the guardians of the worlds and took away their glory.

devodyAnazriyA juSTamadhyAste sma triviSTapam ॥ mahendrabhavanaM sAkSAnnirmitaM vizvakarmaNA ॥ 23 ॥
He occupied heaven possessing the glory of the celestial garden and the palace of lord Indra built by Viśvakarman.

tasminmahendrasya gRhe mahAbalo mahAmanA nirjitaloka ekarAT॥ reme'bhivaMdyAMghriyugaH surAdibhiH pratApitairUrjitacaMDazAsanaH॥24॥
The powerful Daitya of a lofty mind who reigned as the sole ruler after conquering all the worlds sported in the palace of lord Indra. The gods and others who were overwhelmed by his power worshipped the pair of his feet. He exercised a stern and fierce authority.

स इत्थं निर्जितककुबेकराड् विषयान्प्रियान् ॥ यथोपजोषं भुंजानो नातृप्यदजितेन्द्रियः ॥ २५ ॥
sa itthaM nirjitakakubekarAD viSayAnpriyAn ॥ yathopajoSaM bhuMjAno nAtRpyadajitendriyaH ॥ 25 ॥
Thus conquering the quarters and reigning as the supreme overlord he enjoyed pleasures to the maximum extent. Since he had not conquered his senses he was never satiated in his enjoyment of pleasures.

evamaizvaryamattasya dRptasyocchAstravartinaH ॥ kAle vyatIte mahati pApabuddhirabhUttataH ॥ 26 ॥
He was haughty, puffed up with prosperity. He slighted and transgressed the injunctions of the sacred scriptures. After the lapse of some time he became evil-minded.

mahiSAsuraputro'sau saMcikleza dvijAnvarAn ॥ tApasAnnitarAM pRthvyAM dAnavassukhamardanaH ॥ 27 ॥
The Dānava, the suppressor of the gods, the son of Mahiṣāsura harassed the excellent brahmins and the sages on the earth very much.

surAnnarAMzca pramathAnsarvAJcikleza durmatiH ॥ dharmAnvitAnvizeSeNa pUrvavairamanusmaran ॥ 28 ॥
The wicked Daitya harassed the gods, the human beings, and all the Pramathas. He tortured all righteous people particularly recollecting the previous enmity.

ekasminsamaye tAta dAnavo'sau mahAbalaH ॥ agacchadrAjadhAnIM va zaMkarasya gajAsuraH ॥ 29 ॥
O dear, once this Dānava of great strength, Gajāsura came to the capital city of Śiva.

samAgate'surendre hi mahAnkalakalo mune ॥ trAtatrAteti tatrAsIdAnaMdanavAsinAm ॥ 2-5-57-30 ॥
O sage, when the lord of Asuras came there, there was a great tumult among the residents of Ānandavana, They shouted “Protect, Protect.”

महिषाऽसुरपुत्रोऽसौ यदा पुर्यां समागतः ॥ प्रमथन्प्रमथान्सर्वान्निजवीर्यमदोद्धतः॥३१॥
mahiSA'suraputro'sau yadA puryAM samAgataH ॥ pramathanpramathAnsarvAnnijavIryamadoddhataH॥31॥
When this son of Mahiṣāsura haughty of his valour entered the city suppressing the Pramathas, Indra and other gods previously vanquished by him sought refuge in Śiva.

तस्मिन्नवसरे देवाश्शक्राद्यास्तत्पराजिताः ॥ शिवस्य शरणं जग्मुर्नत्वा तुष्टुवुरादरात् ॥ ३२ ॥
tasminnavasare devAzzakrAdyAstatparAjitAH ॥ zivasya zaraNaM jagmurnatvA tuSTuvurAdarAt ॥ 32 ॥
On that occasion the gods, Indra and others were defeated. They took refuge in Lord Shiva and bowed down and praised him with respect.

न्यवेदयन्दानवस्य तस्य काश्यां समागमम् ॥ क्लेशाधिक्यं तत्रत्यानां तन्नाथानां विशेषतः ॥ ३३ ॥
nyavedayandAnavasya tasya kAzyAM samAgamam ॥ klezAdhikyaM tatratyAnAM tannAthAnAM vizeSataH ॥ 33 ॥
They mentioned to him the arrival of the Dānava at Kāśī, the height of distress of the people there, especially of the rulers.

devA UcuH ॥ devadeva mahAdeva tava puryAM gatosuraH ॥ kaSTaM datte tvajjanAnAM taM jahi tvaM kRpAnidhe ॥ 34 ॥
The gods said: O great gods, O lord of gods, the Asura has gone to your city. He is inflicting pain on your people. O storehouse of benignity, please slay him.

यत्रयत्र धरायां च चरणं प्रमिणोति हि ॥ अचलां सचलां तत्र करोति निज भारतः ॥ ३५ ॥

Wherever he sets foot on the earth he shakes the ground there by his great weight.

Uruvegena taravaH pataMti zikharaissaha ॥ yasya dordaMDaghAtena cUrNA syuzca ziloccayAH ॥ 36 ॥
By his great velocity trees fall down with roots and branches. Hit by his brawny arms, big mountains are reduced to powder.

यस्य मौलिजसंघर्षाद्घना व्योम त्यजंत्यपि ॥ नीलिमानं न चाद्यापि जह्युस्तत्केशसंगजम् ॥ ३७ ॥
yasya maulijasaMgharSAdghanA vyoma tyajaMtyapi ॥ nIlimAnaM na cAdyApi jahyustatkezasaMgajam ॥ 37 ॥
The clouds leave the sky hit by his head. Still they do not lose their blueness due to the contact with his hair.

यस्य विश्वाससंभारैरुत्तरंगा महाब्धयः ॥ नद्योप्यमन्दकल्लोला भवंति तिमिभिस्सह ॥ ३८ ॥
yasya vizvAsasaMbhArairuttaraMgA mahAbdhayaH ॥ nadyopyamandakallolA bhavaMti timibhissaha ॥ 38 ॥
When he breathes out, the mighty oceans surge up with their billows. Even the rivers are filled with waves as though with whales.

योजनानां सहस्राणि नव यस्य समुच्छ्रयः ॥ तावानेव हि विस्तारस्तनोर्मायाविनोऽस्य हि ॥ ३९ ॥
yojanAnAM sahasrANi nava yasya samucchrayaH ॥ tAvAneva hi vistArastanormAyAvino'sya hi ॥ 39 ॥
His height is nine thousand Yojanas. The girth of this Asura who wields Māyā is also of that proportion.

Lord Śiva said: In this holy place, a means to the achievement of liberation, let your meritorious body become phallic image yielding liberation to all.

Viṣṇu, Brahmā and other gods were delighted in their minds. With palms joined in reverence they bowed to lord Śiva and eulogised him.

When Gajāsura the lord of the Dānavas, and the son of Mahiṣa was killed, the gods returned to their original place and the universe attained normalcy.

Thus I have narrated to you the story of Śiva which shows his affection to his devotees, which is conducive to the attainment of heaven, fame and longevity and which increases wealth and food-grains.

He who listens to this with devotion, or narrates this observing pure rites, enjoys great happiness and attains salvation, the greatest bliss hereafter.
