sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ atha bANAsuraH kruddhastatra gatvA dadarza tam ॥ divyalIlAttavapuSaM prathame vayasi sthitam ॥ 1 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: The infuriated Asura Bāṇa went there and saw Aniruddha who was in the fresh years of youth and who seemed to have been born especially for divine sports.

The infuriated Bāṇa, very efficient in war, was a bit surprised on seeing him and wondered why he had done like that and therefore said mockingly.

aho manuSyo rUpADhyassAhasI dhairyavAniti ॥ koyamAgatakAlazca duSTabhAgyo vimUDhadhIH॥3॥
Oh this man is really handsome, bold and daring. Who can this unfortunate deluded person be? His death is imminent.

yena me kulacAritraM dUSitaM duhitA hitA ॥ taM mArayadhvaM kupitAzzIghraM zastraissudAruNaiH ॥ 4 ॥
O angry ones, with terrible weapons immediately kill the fellow who has outraged the traditional purity of my family and defiled my dear daughter.

durAcAraM ca taM baddhvA ghore kArA gRhe tataH ॥ rakSadhvaM vikaTe vIrA bahukAlaM vizeSataH ॥ 5 ॥
O heroic ones, bind the terrible fellow of evil conduct. Put him in a frightful prison for a long time.

न जाने कोयमभयः को वा घोरपराक्रमः ॥ विचार्येति महाबुद्धिस्सं दिग्धोऽभूच्छरासुरः ॥ ६ ॥
na jAne koyamabhayaH ko vA ghoraparAkramaH ॥ vicAryeti mahAbuddhissaM digdho'bhUccharAsuraH ॥ 6 ॥
After saying this, the Asura Bāṇa thought within himself intelligently. “It is not known who this fearless fellow is. Certainly he is a man of terrible exploit”. Thinking thus Bāṇa hesitated to act.

tato daityena sainyaM tu dazasAhasrakaM zanaiH ॥ vadhAya tasya vIrasya vyAdiSTaM pApabuddhinA ॥ 7 ॥
Then gradually the evil-minded Daitya ordered ten thousand men from his army for slaying him.

tadAdiSTAstu te vIrAH sarvatontaHpuraM drutam ॥ chAdayAmAsuratyugrAzchiMdi bhiMdIti vAdinaH ॥ 8 ॥
Commanded by him those heroic terrible fellows encircled the harem saying. “Cut him, pierce him”.

शत्रुसैन्यं ततो दृष्ट्वा गर्जमानः स यादवः ॥ अंतःपुरं द्वारगतं परिघं गृह्य चातुलम् ॥ ९ ॥
zatrusainyaM tato dRSTvA garjamAnaH sa yAdavaH ॥ aMtaHpuraM dvAragataM parighaM gRhya cAtulam ॥ 9 ॥
On seeing the army of the enemy, Aniruddha the scion of the Yādava family, roared. He seized the big iron club from the harem-gate and came out of the apartment like the god of death armed with thunderbolt.

निष्क्रांतो भवनात्तस्माद्वज्रहस्त इवांतकः ॥ तेन तान्किंकरान् हत्वा पुनश्चांतःपुरं ययौ ॥ 2-5-53-१० ॥
niSkrAMto bhavanAttasmAdvajrahasta ivAMtakaH ॥ tena tAnkiMkarAn hatvA punazcAMtaHpuraM yayau ॥ 2-5-53-10 ॥
With that iron club he killed the servants and returned to the harem.

evaM dazasahasrANi sainyAni munisattama ॥ jaghAna roSaraktAkSo varddhitazzivatejasA ॥ 11 ॥
O excellent sage, thus Aniruddha strengthened by Śiva’s splendour, with eyes turned red by anger, killed all the ten thousand men of the army.

लक्षे हतेऽथ योधानां ततो बाणासुरो रुषा ॥ कुभांडं स गृहीत्वा तु युद्धे शौंडं समाह्वयत् ॥ १२ ॥
lakSe hate'tha yodhAnAM tato bANAsuro ruSA ॥ kubhAMDaM sa gRhItvA tu yuddhe zauMDaM samAhvayat ॥ 12 ॥
With the sword captured in the course of the battle he killed ten thousands of horses and charioteers of the lord of Daityas.

अनिरुद्धं महाबुद्धिं द्वन्द्वयुद्धे महा हवे ॥ प्राद्युम्निं रक्षितं शैवतेजसा प्रज्वलत्तनुम् ॥ १३ ॥
aniruddhaM mahAbuddhiM dvandvayuddhe mahA have ॥ prAdyumniM rakSitaM zaivatejasA prajvalattanum ॥ 13 ॥
When a hundred thousand soldiers had been killed, the Asura Bāṇa furiously entered the fray taking with him Kumbhāṇḍa, expert in war.

ततो दशसहस्राणि तुरगाणां रथोत्तमान् ॥ युद्धप्राप्तेन खड्गेन दैत्येन्द्रस्य जघान सः ॥ १४ ॥
tato dazasahasrANi turagANAM rathottamAn ॥ yuddhaprAptena khaDgena daityendrasya jaghAna saH ॥ 14 ॥
He then challenged Aniruddha for a duel in the course of that war—Aniruddha the highly intelligent son of Pradyumna, of refulgent body and protected by Śiva’s brilliance.

तद्वधाय ततश्शक्तिं कालवैश्वानरोपमाम् ॥ अनिरुद्धो गृहीत्वा तां तया तं निजघान हि ॥ १५ ॥
tadvadhAya tatazzaktiM kAlavaizvAnaropamAm ॥ aniruddho gRhItvA tAM tayA taM nijaghAna hi ॥ 15 ॥
Aniruddha then seized a spear blazing like the fire of death, for killing him and hit him with that.

रथोपस्थे ततो बाणस्तेन शक्त्याहतो दृढम् ॥ स साश्वस्तत्क्षणं वीरस्तत्रैवांतरधीयत ॥ १६ ॥
rathopasthe tato bANastena zaktyAhato dRDham ॥ sa sAzvastatkSaNaM vIrastatraivAMtaradhIyata ॥ 16 ॥
Bāṇa was hit with the spear even as he was seated in a chariot. In a trice the heroic demon vanished along with his horse.

तस्मिंस्त्वदर्शनं प्राप्ते प्राद्युम्निरपराजितम् ॥ आलोक्य ककुभस्सर्वास्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥ १७ ॥
tasmiMstvadarzanaM prApte prAdyumniraparAjitam ॥ Alokya kakubhassarvAstasthau giririvAcalaH ॥ 17 ॥
When he vanished, Aniruddha, the unvanquished son of Pradyumna, stood steady like a mountain observing all the quarters.

अदृश्यमानस्तु तदा कूटयोधस्स दानवः ॥ नानाशस्त्रसहस्रैस्तं जघान हि पुनः पुनः ॥ १८॥
adRzyamAnastu tadA kUTayodhassa dAnavaH ॥ nAnAzastrasahasraistaM jaghAna hi punaH punaH ॥ 18॥
Remaining invisible, that Dānava Bāṇa, practising deceptive fight, hit him again and again with thousands of weapons.

छद्मनां नागपाशैस्तं बबंध स महाबलः ॥ बलिपुत्रो महावीरश्शिवभक्तश्शरासुरः ॥१९॥
chadmanAM nAgapAzaistaM babaMdha sa mahAbalaH ॥ baliputro mahAvIrazzivabhaktazzarAsuraH ॥19॥
That powerful son of Bali, the heroic devotee of Śiva, the Asura Bāṇa deceitfully bound him with Serpent-nooses.

तं बद्ध्वा पंजरांतःस्थं कृत्वा युद्धादुपारमत्॥ उवाच बाणः संकुद्धस्सूतपुत्रं महाबलम् ॥2-5-53-२० ॥
taM baddhvA paMjarAMtaHsthaM kRtvA yuddhAdupAramat॥ uvAca bANaH saMkuddhassUtaputraM mahAbalam ॥2-5-53-20 ॥
After binding him and putting him in a cage he stopped the battle. The infuriated Bāṇa then spoke to the very powerful son of the charioteer.

बाणासुर उवाच॥ सूतपुत्र शिरश्छिंधि पुरुषस्यास्य वै लघु ॥ येन मे दूषितं पूतं बलाद्दुष्टेन सत्कुलम् ॥ २१ ॥
bANAsura uvAca॥ sUtaputra zirazchiMdhi puruSasyAsya vai laghu ॥ yena me dUSitaM pUtaM balAdduSTena satkulam ॥ 21 ॥
The Asura Bāṇa said: O son of the charioteer, cut off the head of this wicked fellow who has defiled my family.

छित्वा तु सर्वगात्राणि राक्षसेभ्यः प्रयच्छ भोः ॥ अथास्य रक्तमांसानि क्रव्यादा अपि भुंजताम् ॥२२॥
chitvA tu sarvagAtrANi rAkSasebhyaH prayaccha bhoH ॥ athAsya raktamAMsAni kravyAdA api bhuMjatAm ॥22॥
After chopping off the limbs, give them to the Rākṣasas. Or let the beasts of prey swallow his flesh and blood.

अगाधे तृणसंकीर्णे कूपे पातकिनं जहि ॥ किं बहूक्त्या सूतपुत्र मारणीयो हि सर्वथा ॥२३॥
agAdhe tRNasaMkIrNe kUpe pAtakinaM jahi ॥ kiM bahUktyA sUtaputra mAraNIyo hi sarvathA ॥23॥
Or kill this sinner and put him in a grassy well. O son of the charioteer, what more shall I say? By all means he must be slain.

सनत्कु मार उवाच॥ तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मबुद्धिर्निशाचरः ॥ कुंभांडस्त्वब्रवीद्वाक्यं बाणं सन्मंत्रिसत्तमम् ॥२४॥
sanatku mAra uvAca॥ tasya tadvacanaM zrutvA dharmabuddhirnizAcaraH ॥ kuMbhAMDastvabravIdvAkyaM bANaM sanmaMtrisattamam ॥24॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing his words, the Asura Kumbhāṇḍa, the most excellent of the ministers and righteous in thought, spoke to Bāṇa.

कुंभांड उवाच ॥ नैतत्कर्तुं समुचितं कर्म देव विचार्यताम्॥ अस्मिन्हते हतो ह्यात्मा भवेदिति मतिर्मम॥२५॥
kuMbhAMDa uvAca ॥ naitatkartuM samucitaM karma deva vicAryatAm॥ asminhate hato hyAtmA bhavediti matirmama॥25॥
Kumbhāṇḍa said: O lord, this is not a proper thing to do. Please consider. I think by killing him we will be killing ourselves.

अयं तु दृश्यते देव तुल्यो विष्णोः पराक्रमैः॥ वर्धितश्चन्द्र चूडस्य त्वद्दुष्टस्य सुतेचसा ॥२६॥
ayaM tu dRzyate deva tulyo viSNoH parAkramaiH॥ vardhitazcandra cUDasya tvadduSTasya sutecasA ॥26॥
O lord, he seems to be equal to Viṣṇu in exploits. His strength has been increased by the brilliance of the moon-crested lord, your favourite.

अथ चन्द्रललाटस्य साहसेन समत्स्वयम् ॥ इमामवस्थां प्राप्तोसि पौरुषे संव्यवस्थितः ॥२७॥
atha candralalATasya sAhasena samatsvayam ॥ imAmavasthAM prAptosi pauruSe saMvyavasthitaH ॥27॥
Moreover, in daring he is equal to the moon-crested lord; though he is reduced to this plight he maintains his manliness.

अयं शिवप्रसादाद्वै कृष्णपौत्रो महाबलः ॥ अस्मांस्तृणोपमान् वेत्ति दष्टोपि भुजगैर्बलात् ॥ २८ ॥
ayaM zivaprasAdAdvai kRSNapautro mahAbalaH ॥ asmAMstRNopamAn vetti daSTopi bhujagairbalAt ॥ 28 ॥
It is by the grace of Śiva that he, the grandson of Kṛṣṇa, considers us insignificant as the blades of grass. Although he is bitten by serpents cruelly he is still very strong.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ etadvAkyaM tu bANAya kathayitvA sa dAnavaH ॥ aniruddhamuvAcedaM rAjanItividuttamaH ॥ 29 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying thus to Bāṇa, the Dānava, the most excellent among statesmen, spoke to Aniruddha.

कुंभांड उवाच ॥ कोसि कस्यासि रे वीर सत्यं वद ममाग्रतः ॥ केन वा त्वमिहानीतो दुराचार नराधम ॥2-5-53-३०॥
kuMbhAMDa uvAca ॥ kosi kasyAsi re vIra satyaM vada mamAgrataH ॥ kena vA tvamihAnIto durAcAra narAdhama ॥2-5-53-30॥
Kumbhāṇḍa said: O hero, who are you? Whose son are you? Tell us the truth. O meanest of men, of evil conduct, by whom have you been brought here?

दैत्येन्द्रं स्तुहि वीरं त्वं नमस्कुरु कृताजलिः ॥ जितोस्मीति वचो दीनं कथयित्वा पुनःपुनः ॥ ३१ ॥
daityendraM stuhi vIraM tvaM namaskuru kRtAjaliH ॥ jitosmIti vaco dInaM kathayitvA punaHpunaH ॥ 31 ॥
Repeat piteously ‘I am vanquished’. Eulogise the heroic lord of the Daityas. Join your palms in reverence and bow to him.

एवं कृते तु मोक्षस्स्यादन्यथा बंधनादि च ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य प्रतिवाक्यमुवाच सः ॥३२॥
evaM kRte tu mokSassyAdanyathA baMdhanAdi ca ॥ tacchrutvA vacanaM tasya prativAkyamuvAca saH ॥32॥
If you do like this, you may get release. Otherwise this captivity and tortures will continue. On hearing this Aniruddha replied.

अनिरुद्ध उवाच ॥ दैत्याऽधमसखे करर्पिडोपजीवक ॥ निशाचर दुराचार शत्रुधर्मं न वेत्सि भोः ॥३३॥
aniruddha uvAca ॥ daityA'dhamasakhe kararpiDopajIvaka ॥ nizAcara durAcAra zatrudharmaM na vetsi bhoH ॥33॥
Aniruddha said: O friend of the basest of Daityas, O you that sustain yourself with the balls of rice offered in the hands, O demon of evil conduct, you do not know the laws of adversaries.

दैन्यं पलायनं चाथ शूरस्य मरणाधिकम्॥ विरुद्धं चोपशल्यं च भवेदिति मतिर्मम ॥३४॥
dainyaM palAyanaM cAtha zUrasya maraNAdhikam॥ viruddhaM copazalyaM ca bhavediti matirmama ॥34॥
I think that for the valorous person humble supplications and running away from the battlefield are worse than death. These are adverse and painful to him like a dart.

क्षत्रियस्य रणे श्रेयो मरणं सन्मुखे सदा ॥ न वीरमानिनो भूमौ दीनस्येव कृतांजलिः ॥ ३५ ॥
kSatriyasya raNe zreyo maraNaM sanmukhe sadA ॥ na vIramAnino bhUmau dInasyeva kRtAMjaliH ॥ 35 ॥
For a Kṣatriya, death while fighting face to face with the enemy is commendable rather than joining the palms in reverence like a man in humble condition professing to be valorous.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्यादि वीरवाक्यानि बहूनि स जगाद तम् ॥ तदाकर्ण्य सबाणोऽसौ विस्मितोऽभूच्चुकोप च ॥ ३६ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityAdi vIravAkyAni bahUni sa jagAda tam ॥ tadAkarNya sabANo'sau vismito'bhUccukopa ca ॥ 36 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: These and many other heroic words he uttered, on hearing which Bāṇa was surprised and angry too.

तदोवाच नभोवाणी बाणस्याश्वासनाय हि ॥ शृण्वतां सर्ववीराणामनिरुद्धस्य मंत्रिणः ॥ ३७ ॥
tadovAca nabhovANI bANasyAzvAsanAya hi ॥ zRNvatAM sarvavIrANAmaniruddhasya maMtriNaH ॥ 37 ॥
Then a celestial voice was heard for the pacification of Bāṇa which all the heroes, Aniruddha and the minister, stood listening to.

व्योमवाण्युवाच ॥ भो भो बाण महावीर न क्रोधं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥ बलिपुत्रोसि सुमते शिवभक्त विचार्यताम् ॥ ३८ ॥
vyomavANyuvAca ॥ bho bho bANa mahAvIra na krodhaM kartumarhasi ॥ baliputrosi sumate zivabhakta vicAryatAm ॥ 38 ॥
The celestial voice said: O Bāṇa, O great hero, you shall not be angry. O devotee of Śiva, O intelligent one, you are the son of Bali. Ponder over this.

शिवस्सर्वेश्वरस्साक्षी कर्मणां परमेश्वरः ॥ तदधीनमिदं सर्वं जगद्वै सचराचरम् ॥३९॥
zivassarvezvarassAkSI karmaNAM paramezvaraH ॥ tadadhInamidaM sarvaM jagadvai sacarAcaram ॥39॥
Śiva, the lord of all, the supreme lord, is the witness of all activities. This entire universe including the mobile and immobile beings is subservient to him.

He alone is the creator, maintainer and the destroyer of the worlds, always taking up the attributes of Rajas, Sattva and Tamas in the form of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva.
