sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zRNuSvAnyaccaritraM ca zivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ bhaktavAtsalyasaMgarbhi paramAnandadAyakam ॥ 1 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Listen to another story of Śiva the great soul which bestows the highest pleasure and wherein his endearment to his devotees can be seen.

Formerly the Asura Bāṇa had pleased Śiva by performing the Tāṇḍava dance. By adverse fate he became haughty.

jJAtvA saMtuSTamanasaM pArvatIvallabhaM zivam ॥ uvAca cAsuro bANo nataskandhaH kRtAMjaliH॥3॥
On realising that Śiva, the lover of Pārvatī, was delighted in mind, the Asura Bāṇa joined his palms in reverence, bent his shoulders and spoke.

bANa uvAca॥ devadeva mahAdeva sarvadevaziromaNe ॥ tvatprasAdAdbalI cAhaM zRNu me paramaM vacaH ॥ 4 ॥
Bāṇa said: O great god, lord of the gods and crest-jewel of all the gods, I am very strong, thanks to your favour.

dossahasraM tvayA dattaM paraM bhArAya me'bhavet ॥ trilokyAM pratiyoddhAraM na labhe tvadRte samam ॥5॥
A thousand hands have been given to me by you. They are only a burden to me, since except you I do not find any match to oppose me having an equal strength.

O bull-bannered lord, what can I do with these thousand mountain-like hands without a fight.

kaDUMtyA nibhRtaidoMrbhiryuyutsurdiggajAnaham ॥ purANyAcUrNayannadrInbhItAstepi pradudruvuH॥7॥
When my hands itch for war I desire to fight the elephants of the quarters. By hitting the cities and mountains I reduced them to powder. Being frightened they fled away.

Yama has been made a combatant with me and the great fire-god too, similarly. Varuṇa has been made a cowherd looking after my cows.

gajAdhyakSaH kuberastu sairandhrI cApi nirRtiH॥ jitazcAkhaMDalo loke karadAyI sadA kRtaH ॥9॥
Kubera has been made the in-charge of couches, Nirṛti a chaperon. Indra has been defeated and forced to pay tribute.

yuddhasyAgamanaM brUhi yatraite bAhavo mama ॥ zatruhastaprayuktazca zastrAstrairjarjarIkRtAH॥2-5-52-10॥
Please suggest a fight unto me wherein my hands may fall shattered by the weapons hurled by the enemy or cause him to fall in thousand pieces.

pataMtu zatruhastAdvA pAtayantu sahasradhA ॥ etanmanorathaM me hi pUrNaM kuru mahezvara ॥11॥
Even if I fall by the hand of the enemy, or be shattered into a thousand pieces, O Maheshvara (Great Lord Shiva), please fulfill this one heartfelt desire of mine.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ tacchrutvA kupito rudrastvaTTahAsaM mahAdbhutam॥ kRtvA'bravInmahAmanyurbhaktabAdhA'pahArakaH ॥12॥
Sanatkumāra said: Becoming furious on hearing that, Śiva laughed boisterously and in a wonderful manner; Śiva the remover of the distress of devotees became very angry and said.

rudra uvAca ॥ dhigdhiktvAM sarvato garvinsarvadaityakulAdhama ॥ baliputrasya bhaktasya nocitaM vaca IdRzam ॥13॥
Śiva said : Fie upon you, O haughty base Daitya, such a talk as this does not behove the son of Bali and a devotee.

दर्पस्यास्य प्रशमनं लप्स्यसे चाशु दारुणम् ॥ महायुद्धमकस्माद्वै बलिना मत्समेन हि ॥१४॥
darpasyAsya prazamanaM lapsyase cAzu dAruNam ॥ mahAyuddhamakasmAdvai balinA matsamena hi ॥14॥
Very soon, you will meet a terrible challenge to your bluff by fighting a great battle against person equal to me in strength. The battle will be sudden.

तत्र ते गिरिसंकाशा बाहवोऽनलकाष्ठवत् ॥ छिन्ना भूमौ पतिष्यंति शस्त्रास्त्रैः कदलीकृताः॥१५॥
tatra te girisaMkAzA bAhavo'nalakASThavat ॥ chinnA bhUmau patiSyaMti zastrAstraiH kadalIkRtAH॥15॥
Therein your mountain-like hands will be cut off by weapons and missiles. They will fall off like reeds or stumps of plantain trees.

यदेष मानुषशिरो मयूरसहितो ध्वजः॥ विद्यते तव दुष्टात्मंस्तस्य स्यात्पतनं यदा ॥ १६ ॥
yadeSa mAnuSaziro mayUrasahito dhvajaH॥ vidyate tava duSTAtmaMstasya syAtpatanaM yadA ॥ 16 ॥
“O wicked soul, when this flagstaff of yours, with the emblem of a peacock with a human head, which is installed in your armoury, falls without being blown off by a gust of wind, you can decide within your mind that a terrible battle is at hand.

स्थापितस्यायुधागारे विना वातकृतं भयम् ॥ तदा युद्धं महाघोरं संप्राप्तमिति चेतसि ॥१७॥
sthApitasyAyudhAgAre vinA vAtakRtaM bhayam ॥ tadA yuddhaM mahAghoraM saMprAptamiti cetasi ॥17॥
Although the armory was well-secured, a fear not caused by wind arose without warning. At that moment, the mind perceived that a great and terrible battle had arrived.

निधाय घोरं संग्रामं गच्छेथाः सर्वसैन्यवान् ॥ सांप्रतं गच्छ तद्वेश्म यतस्तद्विद्यते शिवः॥१८॥
nidhAya ghoraM saMgrAmaM gacchethAH sarvasainyavAn ॥ sAMprataM gaccha tadvezma yatastadvidyate zivaH॥18॥
Go to that terrible war accompanied by all your generals. Now return to your abode where Śiva is present.

तथा तान्स्वमहोत्पातांस्तत्र द्रष्टासि दुर्मते ॥ इत्युक्त्वा विररामाथ गर्वहृद्भक्तवत्सलः ॥१९॥
tathA tAnsvamahotpAtAMstatra draSTAsi durmate ॥ ityuktvA virarAmAtha garvahRdbhaktavatsalaH ॥19॥
O wicked one, you will see the great evil portents.” After saying this, the lord who is favourably disposed to the devotees and is the dispeller of pride stopped.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा रुद्रमभ्यर्च्य दिव्यैरजंलिकुड्मलैः॥ प्रणम्य च महादेवं बाणश्च स्वगृहं गतः ॥ 2-5-52-२० ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ tacchrutvA rudramabhyarcya divyairajaMlikuDmalaiH॥ praNamya ca mahAdevaM bANazca svagRhaM gataH ॥ 2-5-52-20 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: After hearing that, Bāṇa worshiped Śiva with palms joined in reverence in the form of buds and bowed to lord Śiva. He then went to his abode.

कुंभाण्डाय यथावृत्तं पृष्टः प्रोवाच हर्षितः ॥ पर्यैक्षिष्टासुरो बाणस्तं योगं ह्युत्सुकस्सदा ॥ २१ ॥
kuMbhANDAya yathAvRttaM pRSTaH provAca harSitaH ॥ paryaikSiSTAsuro bANastaM yogaM hyutsukassadA ॥ 21 ॥
On being asked, the delighted Asura mentioned everything to Kumbhāṇḍa in the manner it had happened. The Asura Bāṇa awaited the particular conjunction of circumstances eagerly.

अथ दैवात्कदाचित्स स्वयं भग्नं ध्वजं च तम् ॥ दृष्ट्वा तत्रासुरो बाणो हृष्टो युद्धाय निर्ययौ ॥ २२ ॥
atha daivAtkadAcitsa svayaM bhagnaM dhvajaM ca tam ॥ dRSTvA tatrAsuro bANo hRSTo yuddhAya niryayau ॥ 22 ॥
Once, by chance he saw the flagstaff broken and fallen. On seeing it, he was delighted and he set out for war.

स स्वसैन्यं समाहूय संयुक्तः साष्टभिर्गणैः ॥ इष्टिं सांग्रामिकां कृत्वा दृष्ट्वा सांग्रामिकं मधु ॥ २३ ॥
sa svasainyaM samAhUya saMyuktaH sASTabhirgaNaiH ॥ iSTiM sAMgrAmikAM kRtvA dRSTvA sAMgrAmikaM madhu ॥ 23 ॥
He called together his entire army. He was accompanied by his eight lieutenants. He performed the sacrifice for success in war. He surveyed the wine prepared for use in the course of war.

ककुभां मंगलं सर्वं संप्रेक्ष्य प्रस्थितोऽभवत् ॥ महोत्साहो महावीरो बलिपुत्रो महारथः ॥ २४ ॥
kakubhAM maMgalaM sarvaM saMprekSya prasthito'bhavat ॥ mahotsAho mahAvIro baliputro mahArathaH ॥ 24 ॥
He observed the auspicious signs in the quarters and set off. He, the son of Bali, the heroic warrior capable of fighting with ten thousand persons, was very enthusiastic.

इति हृत्कमले कृत्वा कः कस्मादागमिष्यति ॥ योद्धा रणप्रियो यस्तु नानाशस्त्रास्त्रपारगः ॥ २५ ॥
iti hRtkamale kRtvA kaH kasmAdAgamiSyati ॥ yoddhA raNapriyo yastu nAnAzastrAstrapAragaH ॥ 25 ॥
He thought within himself—“Who can be that warrior fond of battle, a master of the art of using weapons and missiles who will cut off my thousand hands like reeds or whom I shall cut into hundred pieces?”

यस्तु बाहुसहस्रं मे छिनत्त्वनलकाष्ठवत् ॥ तथा शस्त्रैर्महातीक्ष्णैश्च्छिनद्मि शतशस्त्विह ॥ २६ ॥
yastu bAhusahasraM me chinattvanalakASThavat ॥ tathA zastrairmahAtIkSNaizcchinadmi zatazastviha ॥ 26 ॥
He who cut off my thousand arms as if they were nothing more than dry sticks of wood, Now I shall, in turn, cut him into hundreds of pieces here with extremely sharp weapons.

In the meantime, in the month of Vaiśākha after her monthly course, the daughter of Bāṇa had her auspicious bath and auspicious rites after worshipping lord Śiva.

mAdhavaM mAdhave mAsi pUjayitvA mahAnizi ॥ suptA cAMtaH pure gupte strIbhAvamupalaMbhitA ॥ 28 ॥
At night she lay asleep in the well-guarded harem. It was then that Kāma entered the place with lord Śiva.

gauryA saMpreSitenApi vyAkRSTA divyamAyayA ॥ kRSNAtmajAtmajenAtha rudaMtI sA hyanAthavat ॥ 29 ॥
She was seized by Kṛṣṇa’s grandson sent by Pārvatī of divine Māyā. She began to cry helplessly. He enjoyed her forcibly.

sa cApi tAM balAdbhuktvA pArvatyAH sakhibhiH punaH ॥ nItastu divyayogena dvArakAM nimiSAMtarAt ॥ 2-5-52-30 ॥
Within a moment he was carried to Dvārakā by Pārvatī’s attendants by means of their divine Yogic power.

mRditA sA tadotthAya rudaMtI vividhA giraH ॥ sakhIbhyaH kathayitvA tu dehatyAge kRtakSaNA ॥31॥
Rubbed and squeezed thus, she got up crying. She mumbled various words to her female attendants. She even decided to give up her life.

sakhyA kRtAtmano doSaM sA vyAsa smAritA punaH॥ sarvaM tatpUrvavRttAMtaM tato dRSTvA ca sA bhavat॥32॥
O Vyāsa, she was then reminded by her friend of the fault she had committed previously. She then came to realise the entire incident that had occurred formerly.

abravIccitralekhAM ca tato madhurayA girA ॥ USA bANasya tanayA kuMbhAMDatanayAM mune ॥33॥
O sage, Ūṣā, daughter of Bāṇa, spoke sweetly to Citralekhā, daughter of Kumbhāṇḍa.

USovAca ॥ sakhi yadyeSa me bhartA pArvatyA vihitaH purA ॥ kenopAyena te guptaH prApyate vidhivanmayA ॥ 34 ॥
Ūṣā said: Dear friend, if he is the person ordained as my husband by Pārvatī, how can I obtain him duly?

kasminkule sa vA jAto mama yena hRtaM manaH ॥ ityuSAvacanaM zrutvA sakhI provAca tAM tadA ॥ 35 ॥
In what family is he born who has fascinated my mind thus? On hearing the words of Ūṣā, the friend told her then.

चित्रलेखोवाच ॥ त्वया स्वप्ने च यो दृष्टः पुरुषो देवि तं कथम् ॥ अहं संमानयिष्यामि न विज्ञातस्तु यो मम ॥३६॥
citralekhovAca ॥ tvayA svapne ca yo dRSTaH puruSo devi taM katham ॥ ahaM saMmAnayiSyAmi na vijJAtastu yo mama ॥36॥
Citralekhā said: O gentle lady, how shall I bring that man who was seen by you in the dream and whom I do not know.

दैत्यकन्या तदुक्ते तु रागांधा मरणोत्सुका ॥ रक्षिता च तया सख्या प्रथमे दिवसे ततः ॥३७॥
daityakanyA tadukte tu rAgAMdhA maraNotsukA ॥ rakSitA ca tayA sakhyA prathame divase tataH ॥37॥
Thus said by her, the daughter of the Daitya blinded by passion was ready to end her life. She was saved thus by her friend on the first day.

punaH provAca soSA vai citralekhA mahAmatiH ॥ kuMbhAMDasya sutA bANatanayAM munisattama ।38॥
O excellent sage, again that daughter of Kumbhāṇḍa, Citralekhā, of great intellect spoke to Ūṣā the daughter of Bāṇa.

citralekhovAca ॥ vyasanaM te'pakarSAmi trilokyAM yadi bhASyate॥ samAneSye naraM yaste manohartA tamAdiza ॥39॥
I can dispel your grief if such a man could be anywhere in the three worlds. I shall bring him who has captivated your mind. Please mention the details of his features.

Sanatkumāra said: After saying this, she painted all the gods on a canvas together with the Daityas, Dānavas, Gandharvas, Siddhas, Nāgas, Yakṣas and others.

The gatekeepers said: O lord, no one knows how this was done. Indra has entered your harem in secret and forcibly. He has outraged the modesty of your daughter by seizing her himself.

Sanatkumāra said: O excellent sage, on hearing their words, on hearing of the defilement of his daughter, the lord of Dānavas of great strength, became surprised.
