Vyāsa said: O omniscient Sanatkumāra, a wonderfully excellent story has been narrated with love and blessings by you.

idAnIM zrotumicchAmi caritaM zazimaulinaH ॥ gANapatyaM dadau prItyA yathA bANAsurAya vai ॥ 2 ॥
It is full of Śiva’s benediction. I wish to know more of the story of the moon-crested lord wherein he gave the Asura Bāṇa the position of the chieftain of his Gaṇas.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zRNu vyAsAdarAttAM vai kathAM zaMbhoH parAtmanaH ॥ gANapatyaM yathA prItyA dadau bANA surAya hi ॥ 3 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: O Vyāsa, listen with reverence to the story of Śiva, the great Ātman wherein it is explained how he bestowed the chieftainship of his Gaṇas on the Asura Bāṇa.

atraiva sucaritraM ca zaMkarasya mahAprabhoH ॥ kRSNena samaropyatra zaMbhorbANAnugRhNataH ॥ 4 ॥
Here is the good story of Śiva, the great lord. Here too is the story of Śiva’s fight with Kṛṣṇa when the former blessed Bāṇa.

atrAnurUpaM zRNu me zivalIlAnvitaM param ॥ itihAsaM mahApuNyaM manaHzrotrasukhAvaham ॥ 5 ॥
Listen from me the most befitting and the highly meritorious legend of the sports of Śiva. It is pleasing to the mind and to the ears.

brahmaputro marIciryo munirAsInmahAmatiH ॥ mAnasassarvaputreSu jyeSThaH zreSThaH prajApatiH ॥ 6 ॥
Marīci, the sage of great intellect, was the mentally created eldest son of Brahmā. He was a Prajāpati too.

His son Kaśyapa was a noble soul. He was the most excellent of all sages. He made the creation flourish well. He was devoted to his father and to Brahmā.

स्वस्य त्रयोदशमितादक्षकन्या स्सुशीलिकाः ॥ कश्यपस्य मुनेर्व्यास पत्न्यश्चासन्पतिव्रताः ॥८॥
svasya trayodazamitAdakSakanyA ssuzIlikAH ॥ kazyapasya munervyAsa patnyazcAsanpativratAH ॥8॥
O Vyāsa, thirteen daughters of Dakṣa were his wives. They were of good conduct and very faithful to their husband, the sage Kaśyapa.

tatra jyeSThA ditizcAsIddaityAstattanayAssmRtAH ॥ anyAsAM ca sutA jAtA devAdyAssacarAcarAH ॥ 9 ॥
The eldest of the wives was Diti. The Daityas were her sons. The gods and others including the mobile and immobile beings were born to others.

The eldest Diti had the heroic sons Hiraṇyakaśipu the elder and Hiraṇyākṣa the younger.

hiraNyakazipoH putrAzcatvAro daityasattamAH॥ hrAdAnuhrAdasaMhrAdA prahrAdazcetyanukramAt॥11॥
Hiraṇyakaśipu had four sons. They were in order Hrāda, Anuhrāda, Saṃhrāda and Prahlāda.

प्रह्रादस्तत्र हि महान्विष्णुभक्तो जितेन्द्रियः ॥ यं नाशितुं न शक्तास्तेऽभवन्दैत्याश्च केपि ह ॥ १२ ॥
prahrAdastatra hi mahAnviSNubhakto jitendriyaH ॥ yaM nAzituM na zaktAste'bhavandaityAzca kepi ha ॥ 12 ॥
Prahlāda was a great devotee of Viṣṇu. He had full control of his sense-organs. The Daityas were unable to destroy him.

हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्राश्चत्वारो दैत्यसत्तमाः॥ ह्रादानुह्रादसंह्रादा प्रह्रादश्चेत्यनुक्रमात्॥११॥ विरोचनः सुतस्तस्य महा दातृवरोऽभवत् ॥ शक्राय स्वशिरो योऽदाद्याचमानाय विप्रतः ॥ १३ ॥
hiraNyakazipoH putrAzcatvAro daityasattamAH॥ hrAdAnuhrAdasaMhrAdA prahrAdazcetyanukramAt॥11॥ virocanaH sutastasya mahA dAtRvaro'bhavat ॥ zakrAya svaziro yo'dAdyAcamAnAya viprataH ॥ 13 ॥
His son Virocana was the most excellent of donors. He gave even his head to Indra who requested for the same in the guise of a brahmin.

तस्य पुत्रो बलिश्चासीन्महादानी शिवप्रियः ॥ येन वामनरूपाय हरयेऽदायि मेदिनी ॥ १४ ॥
tasya putro balizcAsInmahAdAnI zivapriyaH ॥ yena vAmanarUpAya haraye'dAyi medinI ॥ 14 ॥
His son was Bali who was a favourite of Śiva and a liberal donor. The earth was given by him to Viṣṇu who assumed the form of a dwarf.

तस्यौरसः सुतो बाणश्शिवभक्तो बभूव ह ॥ मान्यो वदान्यो धीमांश्च सत्यसंधस्स हस्रदः ॥ १५ ॥
tasyaurasaH suto bANazzivabhakto babhUva ha ॥ mAnyo vadAnyo dhImAMzca satyasaMdhassa hasradaH ॥ 15 ॥
His son Bāṇa became a devotee of Śiva. He was highly respected and intelligent. He was truthful and a liberal donor making thousands of charitable gifts.

शोणिताख्ये पुरे स्थित्वा स राज्यमकरोत्पुरा ॥ त्रैलोक्यं च बलाञ्ज्जित्वा तन्नाथानसुरेश्वरः ॥ १६ ॥
zoNitAkhye pure sthitvA sa rAjyamakarotpurA ॥ trailokyaM ca balAJjjitvA tannAthAnasurezvaraH ॥ 16 ॥
Staying in the Śoṇita town he ruled over the three worlds after defeating several rulers forcefully.

तस्य बाणासुरस्यैव शिवभक्तस्य चामराः ॥ शंकरस्य प्रसादेन किंकरा इव तेऽभवन् ॥१७॥
tasya bANAsurasyaiva zivabhaktasya cAmarAH ॥ zaMkarasya prasAdena kiMkarA iva te'bhavan ॥17॥
As a result of the grace of Śiva, the gods became the virtual servants of Bāṇa, the devotee of Śiva.

तस्य राज्येऽमरान्हित्वा नाभवन्दुःखिताः प्रजाः ॥ सापत्न्यादुःखितास्ते हि परधर्मप्रवर्तिनः॥१८॥
tasya rAjye'marAnhitvA nAbhavanduHkhitAH prajAH ॥ sApatnyAduHkhitAste hi paradharmapravartinaH॥18॥
They were distressed by his enmity although he practised high virtues. In accompaniment of the instrumental music played by his thousand arms, by means of the Tāṇḍava dance he propitiated Śiva.

सहस्रबाहुवाद्येन स कदाचिन्महासुरः॥ तांडवेन हि नृत्येनातोषयत्तं महेश्वरम् ॥ १९ ॥
sahasrabAhuvAdyena sa kadAcinmahAsuraH॥ tAMDavena hi nRtyenAtoSayattaM mahezvaram ॥ 19 ॥
Once, that mighty demon (mahāsura), using his thousand arms as instruments, Performed a fierce Tāṇḍava dance, through which he greatly pleased Lord Maheshvara (Shiva).

तेन नृत्येन संतुष्टस्सुप्रसन्नो बभूव ह ॥ ददर्श कृपया दृष्ट्या शंकरो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ 2-5-51-२० ॥
tena nRtyena saMtuSTassuprasanno babhUva ha ॥ dadarza kRpayA dRSTyA zaMkaro bhaktavatsalaH ॥ 2-5-51-20 ॥
Śiva favourably disposed to his devotees was highly delighted and satisfied by his dance and he glanced at him with sympathetic eyes.

भगवान्सर्वलोकेश्शशरण्यो भक्तकामदः ॥ वरेण च्छंदयामास बालेयं तं महासुरम् ॥२१॥
bhagavAnsarvalokezzazaraNyo bhaktakAmadaH ॥ vareNa cchaMdayAmAsa bAleyaM taM mahAsuram ॥21॥
The lord of the worlds, worthy of being sought refuge in, the bestower of the desires of the devotees asked the great demon, the son of Bali, to choose a boon he liked.

शंकर उवाच॥ बालेयः स महादैत्यो बाणो भक्तवरस्सुधीः॥ प्रणम्य शंकरं भक्त्या नुनाव परमेश्वरम् ॥२२॥
zaMkara uvAca॥ bAleyaH sa mahAdaityo bANo bhaktavarassudhIH॥ praNamya zaMkaraM bhaktyA nunAva paramezvaram ॥22॥
Śiva said: The great Daitya Bāṇa, son of Bali, the foremost among the devotees and highly intelligent, bowed to lord Śiva with devotion and eulogised him.

बाणासुर उवाच ॥ देवदेव महादेव शरणागतवत्सल ॥ संतुष्टोऽसि महेशान ममोपरि विभो यदि ॥ २३ ॥
bANAsura uvAca ॥ devadeva mahAdeva zaraNAgatavatsala ॥ saMtuSTo'si mahezAna mamopari vibho yadi ॥ 23 ॥
The Asura Bāṇa said: O great god, lord of the gods, favourably disposed to those who seek refuge in you, O great Śiva, if you are pleased with me, be my guardian for ever.

मद्रक्षको भव सदा मदुपस्थः पुराधिपः ॥ सर्वथा प्रीतिकृन्मे हि ससुतस्सगणः प्रभो ॥ २४ ॥
madrakSako bhava sadA madupasthaH purAdhipaH ॥ sarvathA prItikRnme hi sasutassagaNaH prabho ॥ 24 ॥
Be present with me as the lord of my city along with your sons and Gaṇas. O lord, be delightfulto me in every respect.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ बलिपुत्रस्स वै बाणो मोहितश्शिवमायया ॥ मुक्तिप्रदं महेशानं दुराराध्यमपि ध्रुवम् ॥ २५ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ baliputrassa vai bANo mohitazzivamAyayA ॥ muktipradaM mahezAnaM durArAdhyamapi dhruvam ॥ 25 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Bāṇa son of Bali, deluded by Śiva’s deception, did not request anything else from lord Śiva who would have bestowed even salvation if asked though he is hard to please.

स भक्तवत्सलः शंभुर्दत्त्वा तस्मै वरांश्च तान् ॥ तत्रोवास तथा प्रीत्या सगणस्ससुतः प्रभुः ॥ २६ ॥
sa bhaktavatsalaH zaMbhurdattvA tasmai varAMzca tAn ॥ tatrovAsa tathA prItyA sagaNassasutaH prabhuH ॥ 26 ॥
Śiva, who is favourably disposed to his devotees, granted boons to him and stayed there lovingly along with his sons and his Gaṇas.

sa kadAcidbANapure cakre devAsuraissaha ॥ nadItIre haraH krIDAM ramye zoNitakAhvaye ॥ 27 ॥
Once Śiva performed divine sports in Śoṇita, the beautiful city of Bāṇa, in the company of the gods and Asuras, on the banks of a river.

nanRturjahasuzcApi gaMdharvAsarasastathA ॥ jeyuH praNemurmunaya AnarcustuSTuvuzca tam ॥28॥
The Gandharvas and the celestial damsels danced and laughed. The sages performed Japas, bowed to, worshipped and eulogised him.

ववल्गुः प्रथमास्सर्वे ऋषयो जुहुवुस्तथा ॥ आययुः सिद्धसंघाश्च दृदृशुश्शांकरी रतिम् ॥ २९ ॥
vavalguH prathamAssarve RSayo juhuvustathA ॥ AyayuH siddhasaMghAzca dRdRzuzzAMkarI ratim ॥ 29 ॥
The Pramathas jumped and shouted; the sages performed sacrifices. The groups of Siddhas came and saw the divine sport of Śiva.

कुतर्किका विनेशुश्च म्लेच्छाश्च परिपंथिनः ॥ मातरोभिमुखास्तस्थुर्विनेशुश्च विभीषिका ॥ 2-5-51-३० ॥
kutarkikA vinezuzca mlecchAzca paripaMthinaH ॥ mAtarobhimukhAstasthurvinezuzca vibhISikA ॥ 2-5-51-30 ॥
Mlecchas, adversaries and evil-intentioned wranglers perished. The mothers (Brāhmi etc.) sat facing him. The terrifying imps perished.

The worldly faults of those who had the good conception of devotion to Śiva were forgotten.

ववल्गुर्मुनयस्सिद्धाः स्त्रीणां दृष्ट्वा विचेष्टितम् ॥ पुपुषुश्चापि ऋतवस्स्वप्रभावं तु तत्र च ॥३२॥
vavalgurmunayassiddhAH strINAM dRSTvA viceSTitam ॥ pupuSuzcApi RtavassvaprabhAvaM tu tatra ca ॥32॥
The sages and the Siddhas leapt and bounced on seeing the activities of the women. The seasons displayed their power and nourished it.

ववुर्वाताश्च मृदवः पुष्पकेसरधूसराः ॥ चुकूजुः पक्षिसंघाश्च शाखिनां मधुलम्पटाः ॥३३॥
vavurvAtAzca mRdavaH puSpakesaradhUsarAH ॥ cukUjuH pakSisaMghAzca zAkhinAM madhulampaTAH ॥33॥
Gentle winds blew wafting the grey pollen dust. The flocks of birds eager after honey chirped on the trees.

पुष्पभारावनद्धानां रारट्येरंश्च कोकिलाः ॥ मधुरं कामजननं वनेषूपवनेषु च ॥३४॥
puSpabhArAvanaddhAnAM rAraTyeraMzca kokilAH ॥ madhuraM kAmajananaM vaneSUpavaneSu ca ॥34॥
The cuckoo cooed sweetly in the forests and parks, generating love, on the branches heavily laden with flowers.

ततः क्रीडाविहारे तु मत्तो बालेन्दुशेखरः ॥ अनिर्जितेन कामेन दृष्टाः प्रोवाच नन्दिनम् ॥३५॥
tataH krIDAvihAre tu matto bAlenduzekharaH ॥ anirjitena kAmena dRSTAH provAca nandinam ॥35॥
Then being glanced at by Kāma who was not vanquished, the crescent-crested lord Śiva highly indulgent in sports spoke to Nandin.

चन्द्रशेखर उवाच ॥ वामामानय गौरीं त्वं कैलासात्कृतमंडनाम् ॥ शीघ्रमस्माद्वनाद्गत्वा ह्युक्त्वाऽकृष्णामिहानय ॥ ३६ ॥
candrazekhara uvAca ॥ vAmAmAnaya gaurIM tvaM kailAsAtkRtamaMDanAm ॥ zIghramasmAdvanAdgatvA hyuktvA'kRSNAmihAnaya ॥ 36 ॥
The crescent-crested Śiva said: Go quickly from this forest and tell the dark-complexioned Pārvatī everything and bring her here from Kailāsa after she has bedecked herself.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ sa tatheti pratijJAya gatvA tatrAha pArvatIm ॥ supraNamya raho dUtazzaMkarasya kRtAMjaliH ॥ 37 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: “So be it” answered the secret messenger of Śiva who started on journey. Reaching there, with palms joined in reverence he bowed to Pārvatī and said.

॥ नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ द्रष्टुमिच्छति देवि त्वां देवदेवो महेश्वरः ॥ स्ववल्लभां रूपकृतां मयोक्तं तन्निदेशतः ॥ ३८ ॥
॥ nandIzvara uvAca ॥ draSTumicchati devi tvAM devadevo mahezvaraH ॥ svavallabhAM rUpakRtAM mayoktaM tannidezataH ॥ 38 ॥
Nandīśvara said: O goddess, the great lord of the gods wishes to see you, his beloved, well-dressed. It is at his bidding that I say this.

Seeing that she (Gauri, the goddess) was playfully sporting in a charming form with the hosts of Love’s attendants (like Kāma), They said to one another with joy, "This is Kāma (the god of love) himself who will now conquer even Kāmaripu (the enemy of desire — Lord Shiva)."
