Sanatkumāra said: The king of Daityas, skilled in interpreting what he hinted at, seized his mace and hastened along with his army to the entrance of the cavern. The terrible demon Gila who could not be overwhelmed even by the foremost among the gods, was placed ahead.

guhAmukhaM prApya mahezvarasya bibheda zastrairazaniprakAzaiH॥ anye tato vIrakameva zastrairavAkiraJchaila sutAM tathAnye ॥ 2 ॥
After reaching the cavern of the lord Śiva, the Daitya attacked with his weapons as refulgent as thunderbolt. The others showered weapons on Vīraka and yet others on Pārvatī, the daughter of the mountain.

द्वारं हि केचिद्रुचिरं बभंजुः पुष्पाणि पत्राणि विनाशयेयुः ॥ फलानि मूलानि जलं च हृद्यमुद्यानमार्गानपि खंडयेयुः ॥ ३ ॥
dvAraM hi kecidruciraM babhaMjuH puSpANi patrANi vinAzayeyuH ॥ phalAni mUlAni jalaM ca hRdyamudyAnamArgAnapi khaMDayeyuH ॥ 3 ॥
Some smashed the beautiful entrance, some destroyed the flowers, leaves, fruits and roots, the hearty water sheds and the garden paths. A few stirred up joyously the sunny peaks of the mountain.

Then Śiva collected his army. The infuriated trident-bearing deity called them together, the terrible living beings, the gods with their armies including Viṣṇu and others.

bhUtAni cAnyAni sudAruNAni devAnsasainyAnsaha viSNumukhyAn॥ AhUtamAtrAnugaNAssasainyA rathairgajairvAjivRSaizca gobhiH ॥ 5 ॥
Other fierce beings (bhūtas), along with the gods and their armies : including the foremost, Vishnu — as soon as they were summoned, arrived with their own forces, riding in chariots, on elephants, on horses, bulls, and even cows.

The gods, along with hosts of spirits (bhūtas), came riding on camels, donkeys, noble birds, and lions; on tigers, deer, boars, cranes, and even on fish, aquatic creatures, and great dolphins (or water beasts like crocodiles).

anyaizca nAnA vidhajIvasaMghairvizIrNadaMzAH sphuTitaissmazAnaiH ॥ bhujaMgamaiH pretazataiH pizAcairdivyairvimAnaiH kamalAkaraizca ॥ 7 ॥
Along with many other kinds of beings — of various forms and species — with broken teeth, shattered bodies, and emerging from cremation grounds; with serpents, hundreds of corpses, and flesh-eating spirits (piśācas), they arrived in celestial chariots and with lotus-filled vehicles.

nadInadaiH parvatavAhanaizca samAgatAH prAMjalayaH praNamya ॥ kapardinaM tasthuradInasattvAssenApatiM vIrakameva kRtvA ॥ 8 ॥
They arrived on rivers, streams, and mountain-like vehicles, offering salutations with folded hands (añjali), bowing in reverence. They stood before Kapardin (Lord Shiva), their spirits undaunted, accepting him as their general, the embodiment of heroism.

When the gods had taken adequate rest along with their vehicles, the trident-bearing lord Śiva sent them to the battle ground with the steady and chief resolve on victory.

चक्रुर्युगांतप्रतिमं च युद्धं मर्य्यादहीनं सगिलेन सर्वे ॥ दैत्येन्द्रसैन्येन सदैव घोरं क्रोधान्निगीर्णास्त्रिदशास्तु संख्ये ॥ 2-5-46-१० ॥
cakruryugAMtapratimaM ca yuddhaM maryyAdahInaM sagilena sarve ॥ daityendrasainyena sadaiva ghoraM krodhAnnigIrNAstridazAstu saMkhye ॥ 2-5-46-10 ॥
They fought with the army of the lord of Daityas including Gila terribly and unrestrainedly as if the end of Yugas had come but they were all devoured in the battlefield angrily.

तस्मिन्क्षणे युध्यमानाश्च सर्वे ब्रह्मेन्द्रविष्ण्वर्कशशांकमुख्याः॥ आसन्निगीर्णा विधसेन तेन सैन्ये निगीर्णेऽस्ति तु वीरको हि ॥११॥
tasminkSaNe yudhyamAnAzca sarve brahmendraviSNvarkazazAMkamukhyAH॥ AsannigIrNA vidhasena tena sainye nigIrNe'sti tu vIrako hi ॥11॥
In a trice all of them including Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu, the sun and the moon were swallowed by Vighasa. When the armies were devoured, only Vīraka was left behind.

विहाय संग्रामशिरोगुहां तां प्रविश्य शर्वं प्रणिपत्य मूर्ध्ना ॥ प्रोवाच दुःखाभिहतः स्मरारिं सुवीरको वाग्ग्मिवरोऽथ वृत्तम् ॥१२॥
vihAya saMgrAmaziroguhAM tAM pravizya zarvaM praNipatya mUrdhnA ॥ provAca duHkhAbhihataH smarAriM suvIrako vAggmivaro'tha vRttam ॥12॥
Leaving off the battle front Vīraka entered the cavern, bowed to Śiva. The eloquent but distressed Vīraka then acquainted the destroyer of Kāma with all the details.

निगीर्णैते सैन्यं विधसदितिजेनाद्य भगवन्निगीर्णोऽसौ विष्णुस्त्रिभुवनगुरुर्दैत्यदलनः ॥ निगीर्णौ चन्द्रार्कौद्रुहिणमघवानौ च वरदौ निगीर्णास्ते सर्वे यमवरुणवाताश्च धनदः ॥ १३ ॥
nigIrNaite sainyaM vidhasaditijenAdya bhagavannigIrNo'sau viSNustribhuvanagururdaityadalanaH ॥ nigIrNau candrArkaudruhiNamaghavAnau ca varadau nigIrNAste sarve yamavaruNavAtAzca dhanadaH ॥ 13 ॥
O lord, your army has been devoured by the Daitya Vighasa. Viṣṇu, the preceptor and elder to the three worlds and the destroyer of Daityas, has been devoured. The moon and the sun, Brahmā and Indra, the bestowers of boons, have been devoured. All these, Yama, Varuṇa, Vāyu and Kubera have been devoured.

स्थितोस्म्येकः प्रह्वः किमिह करणीयं भवतु मे अजेयो दैत्येन्द्रः प्रमुदितमना दैत्यसहितः ॥ १४ ॥
sthitosmyekaH prahvaH kimiha karaNIyaM bhavatu me ajeyo daityendraH pramuditamanA daityasahitaH ॥ 14 ॥
I, the humble one, alone am left behind. What is it that I have to do now? The lord of Daityas along with the Daityas is invincible and hence rejoiced.

अजेयं त्वां प्राप्तः प्रतिभयमना मारुतगतिस्स्वयं विष्णुर्देवः कनककशिपुं कश्यपसुतम् ॥ नखैस्तीक्ष्णैर्भक्त्या तदपिभगवञ्छिष्टवशगः प्रवृत्तस्त्रैलोक्य विधमतु मलं व्यात्तवदनः ॥ १५ ॥
ajeyaM tvAM prAptaH pratibhayamanA mArutagatissvayaM viSNurdevaH kanakakazipuM kazyapasutam ॥ nakhaistIkSNairbhaktyA tadapibhagavaJchiSTavazagaH pravRttastrailokya vidhamatu malaM vyAttavadanaH ॥ 15 ॥
Viṣṇu the lord who became invincible after tearing off Hiraṇyakaśipu the son of Kaśyapa with his claws, had the speed of wind and a terrifying demeanour. He opened his mouth wide and began to blow of the three worlds although the lord was subservient to the good.

वसिष्ठाद्यैश्शप्तो भुवनपतिभिस्सप्तमुनिभिस्तथाभूते भूयस्त्वमिति सुचिरं दैत्यसहितः ॥ १६ ॥
vasiSThAdyaizzapto bhuvanapatibhissaptamunibhistathAbhUte bhUyastvamiti suciraM daityasahitaH ॥ 16 ॥
When the matter stood thus, he was cursed by the seven sages,the virtual lords of the worlds—“You will be crushed by the Daityas for a long time.

ततस्तेनोक्तास्ते प्रणयवचनैरात्मनि हितैः कदास्माद्वै घोराद्भवति मम मोक्षो मुनिवराः॥ यतः क्रुद्धैरुक्तो विधसहरणाद्युद्धसमये ततो घोरैर्बाणैर्विदलितमुखे मुष्टिभिरलम् ॥१७॥
tatastenoktAste praNayavacanairAtmani hitaiH kadAsmAdvai ghorAdbhavati mama mokSo munivarAH॥ yataH kruddhairukto vidhasaharaNAdyuddhasamaye tato ghorairbANairvidalitamukhe muSTibhiralam ॥17॥
Then they were requested by Viṣṇu through loving words conducive to his benefit—“O great sages, when will I get rid of this terrible curse?” Thereupon the infuriated sages said—“At the time of war you will be hit with fists and struck with terrible arrows.

बदर्याख्यारण्ये ननु हरिगृहापुण्यवसतौ निसंस्तभ्यात्मानं विगतकलुषो यास्यसि परम् ॥ ततस्तेषां वाक्यात्प्रतिदिनमसौ दैत्यगिलनः क्षुधार्तस्संग्रामाद्भ्रमति पुनरामोदमुदितः ॥१८॥
badaryAkhyAraNye nanu harigRhApuNyavasatau nisaMstabhyAtmAnaM vigatakaluSo yAsyasi param ॥ tatasteSAM vAkyAtpratidinamasau daityagilanaH kSudhArtassaMgrAmAdbhramati punarAmodamuditaH ॥18॥
When swallowed by Vighasa with wide open mouth, you shall stabilise yourself in the Badarī forest in the holy residence of Śiva, the cavern and shall then be freed from sins. Thereafter in accordance with the curse of the sages he roams everyday in the battle ground, very hungry and swallows the Daityas and becomes delighted.

तमस्वेदं घोरं जगदुदितयोस्सूर्यशशिनोर्यथाशुक्रस्तुभ्यं परमरिपुरत्यंतविकरः । हतान्देवैर्देत्यान्पुनरमृतविद्यास्तुतिपदैस्सवीर्यान्संदृष्टान्व्रणशतवियुक्तान्प्रकुरुते॥१९॥
tamasvedaM ghoraM jagaduditayossUryazazinoryathAzukrastubhyaM paramaripuratyaMtavikaraH । hatAndevairdetyAnpunaramRtavidyAstutipadaissavIryAnsaMdRSTAnvraNazataviyuktAnprakurute॥19॥
By using the science of reviving the dead to life and chanting verses of hymns, Śukra revives the Daityas killed by the gods, with full vigour and joy and cures them of their hundreds of wounds.

वरं प्राणास्त्याज्यास्तव मम तु संग्रामसमये भवान्साक्षीभूतः क्षणमपि वृतः कार्यकरणे ॥2-5-46-२०॥
varaM prANAstyAjyAstava mama tu saMgrAmasamaye bhavAnsAkSIbhUtaH kSaNamapi vRtaH kAryakaraNe ॥2-5-46-20॥
It would rather be better to give upour lives at the battle than yield. You, the witness of everything, have been chosen by us as the guide in the accomplishment of our task.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इतीदं सत्पुत्रात्प्रमथपतिराकर्ण्य कुपितश्चिरं ध्यात्वा चक्रे त्रिभुवनपतिः प्रागनुपमम् ॥ प्रगायत्सामाख्यं दिनकरकराकारवपुषा प्रहासात्तन्नाम्ना तदनु निहतं तेन च तमः॥२१॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ itIdaM satputrAtpramathapatirAkarNya kupitazciraM dhyAtvA cakre tribhuvanapatiH prAganupamam ॥ pragAyatsAmAkhyaM dinakarakarAkAravapuSA prahAsAttannAmnA tadanu nihataM tena ca tamaH॥21॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing this from his excellent son, the lord of Pramathas, the lord of the three worlds meditated for a long time. He performed an incomparable miracle by chanting Sāman songs. He laughed assuming a body as resplendent as the sun and thereby dispelled the darkness.

प्रकाशेस्मिंल्लोके पुनरपि महायुद्धमकरोद्रणे दैत्यैस्सार्द्धं विकृतवदनैर्वीरकमुनिः॥ शिलाचूर्णं भुक्त्वा प्रवरमुनिना यस्तु जनितस्स कृत्वा संग्रामं पुरमपि पुरा यश्च जितवान्॥२२॥
prakAzesmiMlloke punarapi mahAyuddhamakarodraNe daityaissArddhaM vikRtavadanairvIrakamuniH॥ zilAcUrNaM bhuktvA pravaramuninA yastu janitassa kRtvA saMgrAmaM puramapi purA yazca jitavAn॥22॥
When the light spread, the sage Vīraka fought again with the Daityas of deformed features. He who was created by the excellent sage after swallowing powdered rock and who had fought the battle and even conquered the Pura Asura previously was immediately swallowed by the Daitya together with Nandin who carried sharp arrows, spear and swords, who was the chief of warriors and hundreds of excellent sages, the great receptacle of lores, possessed of mental and physical restraint and great courage.

महारुद्रस्सद्यः स खलु दितिजेनातिगिलितस्ततश्चासौ नन्दी निशितशरशूलासिसहितः ॥ प्रधानो योधानां मुनिवरशतानामपि महान्निवासो विद्यानां शमदममहाधैर्यसहितः॥२३॥
mahArudrassadyaH sa khalu ditijenAtigilitastatazcAsau nandI nizitazarazUlAsisahitaH ॥ pradhAno yodhAnAM munivarazatAnAmapi mahAnnivAso vidyAnAM zamadamamahAdhairyasahitaH॥23॥
That great Rudra (Mahārudra) was at once swallowed by the Daitya (demon); Then Nandī, armed with sharp arrows, spears, and swords, arose. He was the chief among warriors and even among hundreds of great sages, the abode of all knowledge, endowed with tranquility, self-control, and supreme courage.

निरीक्ष्यैवं पश्चाद्वृषभवरमारुह्य भगवान्कपर्द्दी युद्धार्थी विधसदितिजं सम्मुखमुखः॥ जपन्दिव्यं मन्त्रं निगलनविधानोद्गिलनकं स्थितस्सज्जं कृत्वा धनुरशनिकल्पानपि शरान्॥२४॥
nirIkSyaivaM pazcAdvRSabhavaramAruhya bhagavAnkaparddI yuddhArthI vidhasaditijaM sammukhamukhaH॥ japandivyaM mantraM nigalanavidhAnodgilanakaM sthitassajjaM kRtvA dhanurazanikalpAnapi zarAn॥24॥
Having witnessed this, the Lord Kapardī (Shiva), desiring battle, mounted his divine bull (Vṛṣabha) and faced the Daitya (demon) directly. Chanting a divine mantra, which had the power to counter swallowing and binding, he stood firm, ready — having strung his bow and prepared arrows as powerful as thunderbolts.

ततौ निष्कांतोऽसौ विधसवदनाद्वीरकमुनिर्गृहीत्वा तत्सर्वे स्वबलमतुलं विष्णुसहितः॥ समुद्गीर्णास्सर्वे कमलजबलारीन्दुदिनपाः प्रहृष्टं तसैन्यं पुनरपि महायुद्धमकरोत् ॥२५॥
tatau niSkAMto'sau vidhasavadanAdvIrakamunirgRhItvA tatsarve svabalamatulaM viSNusahitaH॥ samudgIrNAssarve kamalajabalArIndudinapAH prahRSTaM tasainyaM punarapi mahAyuddhamakarot ॥25॥
Then the sage Vīraka came out of the mouth of Vighasa accompanied by Viṣṇu and his army. The lotus born Brahmā, Indra—the enemy of Bala, the moon and the sun were also disgorged. Thus disgorged the delighted army fought a great battle again.

जिते तस्मिञ्छुक्रस्तदनु दितिजान्युद्धविहतान् यदा विद्यावीर्यात्पुनरपि सजीवान्प्रकुरुते ॥ तदा बद्ध्वानीतः पशुरिव गणैभूतपतये निगीर्णस्तेनासौ त्रिपुररिपुणा दानवगुरुः॥२६॥
jite tasmiJchukrastadanu ditijAnyuddhavihatAn yadA vidyAvIryAtpunarapi sajIvAnprakurute ॥ tadA baddhvAnItaH pazuriva gaNaibhUtapataye nigIrNastenAsau tripuraripuNA dAnavaguruH॥26॥
Thus the army of the Daityas was conquered. But Śukra revived the Daityas slain in the battle by the virtue of his science. The preceptor of Dānavas was then bound like an animal and brought by the Gaṇas before lord Śiva, the destroyer of Tripuras, who swallowed him.

विनष्टे शुक्राख्यो सुररिपुनिवासस्तदखिलो जितो ध्वस्तो भग्नो भृशमपि सुरैश्चापि दलितम्॥ प्रभूतैर्भूतौघैर्दितिजकुणपग्रासरसिकैस्सरुंडैर्नृत्यद्भिर्निशितशरशक्त्युद्धृतकरैः ॥२७॥
vinaSTe zukrAkhyo suraripunivAsastadakhilo jito dhvasto bhagno bhRzamapi suraizcApi dalitam॥ prabhUtairbhUtaughairditijakuNapagrAsarasikaissaruMDairnRtyadbhirnizitazarazaktyuddhRtakaraiH ॥27॥
When Śukra (the preceptor of the demons) was vanquished, the entire abode of the enemies of the gods was conquered, destroyed, and thoroughly shattered by the Devas. It was overrun by countless hordes of spirits (bhūtas), eager to devour the corpses of the Daityas, dancing wildly with severed trunks, their hands torn off by sharp arrows and spears.

प्रमत्तैर्वेतालैस्सुदृढकरतुंडैरपि खगैवृकैर्नानाभेदैश्शवकुणपपूर्णास्यकवलैः॥ विकीर्णे संग्रामे कनककशिपोर्वंशजनकश्चिरं युद्धं कृत्वा हरिहरमहेन्द्रैश्च विजितः ॥२८॥

In that scattered battlefield, frenzied vetaalas (ghouls), birds with strong beaks, wolves of various kinds, feasted on gobbets of flesh, their mouths stuffed with corpse-remains. There, the king descended from Kanaka-Kashipu’s lineage, after fighting a long and fierce war, was finally conquered by Hari (Viṣṇu), Hara (Śiva), and Mahendra (Indra).

When the exhausted army entered the nether worlds, nooks and corners in hills and seas, Andhaka the foremost of the Daityas who in his height of fury had harassed the gods and who could split the universe was divested of his haughtiness by Viṣṇu by terrible blows from his mace.

Since he had secured boons he did not leave the battle ground although his body had been afflicted much by the lord of the gods by terrible blows and hits. Then by means of weapons and missiles, trees, mountains and waters he defeated the gods. Then he challenged the lord of Pramathas roaring loudly.

Fighting steadily by means of various weapons that fell on the battle ground, they were exhausted. Then the Asura inflicted pain on Pārvatī and Śiva by means of uprooted trees, serpents, thunderbolts and other weapons and by indulging in deceptive practices.

In order to conquer Śiva, the Daitya of as great strength and intelligence as the destroyer of Tripuras, created another juggler, a cheat. The Daitya whose madness had helplessly been aggravated by hundreds of boons, could not be killed by the gods, though his body had been shattered by plenty of weapons and missiles.

Many Andhakas originating from the exudations of his body, with hideous faces resembling his, pervaded the surface of the earth. He was terribly pierced with the Trident by Śiva, the enemy of the Tripuras, the lord of Bhūtas whose body blazed like fire at the end of a Kalpa.

When fresh army cropped up from the army slain by Śiva from the hot drops of blood and cut pieces of flesh from the wounds of those killed, Viṣṇu called away the lord of Pramathas and intelligently assumed a fierce form of a hideous woman employing his Yogic knowledge.

It had a very terrible and hard aspect characterised by several arms. Angrily the lord Viṣṇu projected from the wings of the army and stood ahead of the Gaṇas.

The goddess stood high in the battle field covering up the entire ground by her pair of feet. She was eulogised by the gods. Induced by the lord, the hungry female form devoured the army, drank the hot blood of the Daityas and made the battle ground marshy.

Then, only the chief of the Daityas was left. Still he fought on with Śiva, heating terribly with his palms, knees, legs, nails, face, arms and head. Although his blood had been sucked dry he remembered the traditional heroism of his race.

Afterwards he was quietened by the lord of Pramathas. His heart was pierced. He was staked to the trident. He was held aloft in the sky like a long pole. Half of his body, the lower one, was dried up by the rays of the sun. The other half was drenched by clouds attended with gusts of wind and heavy downpour. His body was subjected to all sorts of torture.

vizIrNastigmAMzostuhinazakalAkArazakalastathAbhUtaH prANAMstadapi na jahau daitya vRSabhaH ॥ tadA tuSTazzaMbhuH paramakaruNAvAridhirasau dadau tasmai prItyA gaNapatipadaM tena vinutaH ॥39।
Shattered and scattered like flakes of snow in the rays of the sun, his limbs were torn asunder. Yet the foremost of the Daityas did not die. He eulogised Śiva. The delighted Śiva, ocean of great mercy, joyously gave him the position of the chieftain of his Gaṇas.

harastaistaissArddhaM girivaraguhAyAM pramudito visRjyaikAnaMzAn vividhabalinA pUjyasunagAn ॥ cakArAjJAM krIDAM girivara sutAM prApya muditAM tathA putraM ghorAdvidhasavadanAnmuktamanagham ॥41॥
Śiva spent the time rejoicingly in the mountain cavern in their company. Honouring the great and excellent mountains by the bestowal of gifts he dismissed a few of his Aṃśas (parts). Regaining the delighted daughter of the lord of mountains and the sinless son from the terrible jaw of Vighasa, he sported.
