vyAsa uvAca ॥ nArAyaNazca bhagavAn vIryAdhAnaM cakAra ha ॥ tulasyAH kena yatnena yonau tadvaktumarhasi ॥ 1 ॥
Vyāsa said: How did the lord Nārāyaṇa manage to deposit his semen in the vaginal passage of Tulasī? Please narrate the same.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ नारायणो हि देवानां कार्यकर्ता सतां गतिः ॥ शंखचूडस्य रूपेण रेमे तद्रमया सह ॥२॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ nArAyaNo hi devAnAM kAryakartA satAM gatiH ॥ zaMkhacUDasya rUpeNa reme tadramayA saha ॥2॥
Sanatkumāra said: Nārāyaṇa is the person who carries on the task of the gods. He is the goal of the good. It was in the guise of Śaṅkhacūḍa that he indulged in sexual dalliance with his wife.

Listen to the story of Viṣṇu that causes delight, the story of Viṣṇu who acts at the behest of Śiva and Pārvatī, the mother of the worlds.

raNamadhye vyomavacaH zrutvA devena zaMbhunA॥ preritazzaMkhacUDasya gRhItvA kavacaM param॥4॥
On hearing the aerial voice in the course of the war and urged by lord Śiva, Viṣṇu carried off the excellent armour of Śaṅkhacūḍa assuming the guise of a brahmin, rapidly, by having recourse to his Māyā.

viprarUpeNa tvaritaM mAyayA nijayA hariH॥ jagAma zaMkhacUDasya rUpeNa tulasIgRham ॥5॥
Hari (Lord Vishnu), swiftly assuming the form of a Brāhmaṇa through his own Māyā (divine illusion), went to the house of Tulasī, taking on the appearance of Śaṅkhachūḍa.

दुन्दुभिं वादयामास तुलसी द्वारसन्निधौ ॥ जयशब्दं च तत्रैव बोधयामास सुन्दरीम्॥६॥
dundubhiM vAdayAmAsa tulasI dvArasannidhau ॥ jayazabdaM ca tatraiva bodhayAmAsa sundarIm॥6॥
Very near the entrance to Tulasī’s palace he caused the drum Dundubhi to be beaten and cries of victory to be raised. He thus made the beautiful woman wake up.

tacchrutvA caiva sA sAdhvI paramAnandasaMyutA॥ rAjamArgaM gavAkSeNa dadarza paramAdarAt॥7॥
On hearing it that chaste lady was highly delighted. Eagerly she peeped through the window into the high way.

ब्राह्मणेभ्यो धनं दत्त्वा कारयामास मंगलम्॥ द्रुतं चकार शृंगारं ज्ञात्वाऽऽयातं निजं पतिम् ॥८॥
brAhmaNebhyo dhanaM dattvA kArayAmAsa maMgalam॥ drutaM cakAra zRMgAraM jJAtvA''yAtaM nijaM patim ॥8॥
Knowing that her husband had returned she observed all auspicious rites and offered monetary gifts to the brahmins. She then beautified herself.

अवरुह्य रथाद्विष्णुस्तद्देव्याभवनं ययौ ॥ शंखचूडस्वरूपः स मायावी देवकार्यकृत् ॥ ९ ॥
avaruhya rathAdviSNustaddevyAbhavanaM yayau ॥ zaMkhacUDasvarUpaH sa mAyAvI devakAryakRt ॥ 9 ॥
After decending from the chariot, Viṣṇu who assumed the guise of Śaṅkhacūḍa by deceptive art for the sake of carrying out the task of the gods went to the apartment of the queen.

dRSTvA taM ca puraH prAptaM svakAMtaM sA mudAnvitA ॥ tatpAdau kSAlayAmAsa nanAma ca ruroda ca ॥ 2-5-41-10 ॥
On seeing her husband come before her she became delighted. She washed his feet, bowed to him and cried.

रत्नसिंहासने रम्ये वासयामास मंगलम् ॥ ताम्बूलं च ददौ तस्मै कर्पूरादिसुवासितम् ॥ ११ ॥
ratnasiMhAsane ramye vAsayAmAsa maMgalam ॥ tAmbUlaM ca dadau tasmai karpUrAdisuvAsitam ॥ 11 ॥
She made him sit on the gemset throne of great beauty. She handed him the auspicious betel leaf rendered fragrant with camphor.

adya me saphalaM janma jIvanaM saMbabhUva ha ॥ raNe gataM ca prANezaM pazyaMtyAzca punargRhe॥12॥
It is today that my life has become fruitful since I see my beloved lover who had gone to fight back in the abode again.

इत्युक्त्वा सकटाक्षं सा निरीक्ष्य सस्मितं मुदा ॥ पप्रच्छ रणवृत्तांतं कांतं मधुरया गिरा ॥१३॥
ityuktvA sakaTAkSaM sA nirIkSya sasmitaM mudA ॥ papraccha raNavRttAMtaM kAMtaM madhurayA girA ॥13॥
Saying so glancing at him with ogling eyes and smiling face she sweetly asked him about the events at the battlefield.

तुलस्युवाच ॥ असंख्यविश्वसंहर्ता स देवप्रवरः प्रभुः ॥ यस्याज्ञावर्त्तिनो देवा विष्णुब्रह्मादयस्सदा ॥ १४ ॥
tulasyuvAca ॥ asaMkhyavizvasaMhartA sa devapravaraH prabhuH ॥ yasyAjJAvarttino devA viSNubrahmAdayassadA ॥ 14 ॥
Tulasī said: O lord, how did you fare in the battle with Śiva who renders help to the gods? You had gone to fight Śiva who is the foremost of the gods, who is the annihilator of innumerable universes, whose behests are strictly adhered to and carried out by Viṣṇu.

त्रिदेवजनकस्सोत्र त्रिगुणात्मा च निर्गुणः ॥ भक्तेच्छया च सगुणो हरिब्रह्मप्रवर्तकः ॥१५॥
tridevajanakassotra triguNAtmA ca nirguNaH ॥ bhaktecchayA ca saguNo haribrahmapravartakaH ॥15॥
He, the creator of the three deities (Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva), is both composed of the three guṇas and yet beyond them. By the will of his devotees, he assumes a form with attributes, and is the originator of Hari (Viṣṇu) and Brahmā.

कुबेरस्य प्रार्थनया गुणरूपधरो हरः ॥ कैलासवासी गणपः परब्रह्म सतां गतिः ॥ १६ ॥
kuberasya prArthanayA guNarUpadharo haraH ॥ kailAsavAsI gaNapaH parabrahma satAM gatiH ॥ 16 ॥
By the prayer of Kubera, Hara (Shiva) assumed a form with qualities (guṇa-rūpa). He, the lord of the gaṇas, dwells on Mount Kailāsa, and is the Supreme Brahman — the ultimate refuge of the righteous.

यस्यैकपलमात्रेण कोटिब्रह्मांडसंक्षयः ॥ विष्णुब्रह्मादयोऽतीता बहवः क्षणमात्रतः ॥१७॥
yasyaikapalamAtreNa koTibrahmAMDasaMkSayaH ॥ viSNubrahmAdayo'tItA bahavaH kSaNamAtrataH ॥17॥
By just a fraction of a moment of His time, countless universes are dissolved. Vishnu, Brahmā, and others have passed away many times in but a moment before Him.

कर्तुं सार्द्धं च तेनैव समरं त्वं गतः प्रभो ॥ कथं बभूव संग्रामस्तेन देवसहायिना ॥१८॥
kartuM sArddhaM ca tenaiva samaraM tvaM gataH prabho ॥ kathaM babhUva saMgrAmastena devasahAyinA ॥18॥
O Lord! Yet you went to battle along with Him — Tell me, how did that war occur, with even the gods as His allies?

कुशली त्वमिहायातस्तं जित्वा परमेश्वरम् ॥ कथं बभूव विजयस्तव ब्रूहि तदेव मे ॥१९॥
kuzalI tvamihAyAtastaM jitvA paramezvaram ॥ kathaM babhUva vijayastava brUhi tadeva me ॥19॥
You have happily returned after defeating him, the great lord. How did you win? Please mention that to me.

श्रुत्वेत्थं तुलसीवाक्यं स विहस्य रमापतिः ॥ शंखचूडरूपधरस्तामुवाचामृतं वचः ॥2-5-41-२०॥
zrutvetthaM tulasIvAkyaM sa vihasya ramApatiH ॥ zaMkhacUDarUpadharastAmuvAcAmRtaM vacaH ॥2-5-41-20॥
On hearing these words of Tulasī, Viṣṇu, the lord of Lakṣmī who had assumed the guise of Śaṅkhacūḍa, laughed and spoke sweet words to her.

भगवानुवाच ॥ यदाहं रणभूमौ च जगाम समरप्रियः ॥ कोलाहलो महान् जातः प्रवृत्तोऽभून्महारणः ॥ २१ ॥
bhagavAnuvAca ॥ yadAhaM raNabhUmau ca jagAma samarapriyaH ॥ kolAhalo mahAn jAtaH pravRtto'bhUnmahAraNaH ॥ 21 ॥
Lord Viṣṇu said: When I, fond of war, reached the battle ground there was a great tumult. A great battle ensued.

देवदानवयोर्युद्धं संबभूव जयैषिणोः ॥ दैत्याः पराजितास्तत्र निर्जरैर्बलगर्वितैः ॥ २२ ॥
devadAnavayoryuddhaM saMbabhUva jayaiSiNoH ॥ daityAH parAjitAstatra nirjarairbalagarvitaiH ॥ 22 ॥
There ensued the battle between the gods and the Dānavas both desiring victory. The daityas were defeated by the gods who were proud of their strength.

तदाहं समरं तत्राकार्षं देवैर्बलोत्कटैः ॥ पराजिताश्च ते देवाश्शंकरं शरणं ययुः ॥२३॥
tadAhaM samaraM tatrAkArSaM devairbalotkaTaiH ॥ parAjitAzca te devAzzaMkaraM zaraNaM yayuH ॥23॥
Then I fought with the powerful gods. The gods defeated by me sought refuge in Śiva.

रुद्रोऽपि तत्सहायार्थमाजगाम रणं प्रति॥ तेनाहं वै चिरं कालमयौत्संबलदर्पित ॥२४॥
rudro'pi tatsahAyArthamAjagAma raNaM prati॥ tenAhaM vai ciraM kAlamayautsaMbaladarpita ॥24॥
In order to help them Śiva came to fight. Proud of strength I fought with him for a long time.

आवयोस्समरः कान्ते पूर्णमब्दं बभूव ह ॥ नाशो बभूव सर्वेषामसुराणां च कामिनि ॥२५॥
AvayossamaraH kAnte pUrNamabdaM babhUva ha ॥ nAzo babhUva sarveSAmasurANAM ca kAmini ॥25॥
My dear wife, we fought continuously for a year. O lovely woman, all the Asuras were destroyed.

प्रीतिं च कारयामास ब्रह्मा च स्वयमावयोः ॥ देवानामधिकाराश्च प्रदत्ता ब्रह्मशासनात् ॥२६॥
prItiM ca kArayAmAsa brahmA ca svayamAvayoH ॥ devAnAmadhikArAzca pradattA brahmazAsanAt ॥26॥
Brahmā made us come to a peace. At the bidding of Brahmā the powers of authority were re-assigned to the gods.

मयागतं स्वभवनं शिवलोकं शिवो गतः ॥ सर्वस्वास्थ्यमतीवाप दूरीभूतो ह्युपद्रवः ॥२७॥
mayAgataM svabhavanaM zivalokaM zivo gataH ॥ sarvasvAsthyamatIvApa dUrIbhUto hyupadravaH ॥27॥
I have returned home. Śiva has returned to Śivaloka. Every one has resumed health and normalcy. The torment has receded.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा जगतां नाथः शयनं च चकार ह ॥ रेमे रमापतिस्तत्र रमया स तया मुदा ॥२८॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktvA jagatAM nAthaH zayanaM ca cakAra ha ॥ reme ramApatistatra ramayA sa tayA mudA ॥28॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying this the lord of the worlds lay down on his bed. Then out of joy Viṣṇu indulged in sexual intercourse.

सा साध्वी सुखसंभावकर्षणस्य व्यतिक्रमात् ॥ सर्वं वितर्कयामास कस्त्वमेवेत्युवाच सा ॥ २९ ॥
sA sAdhvI sukhasaMbhAvakarSaNasya vyatikramAt ॥ sarvaM vitarkayAmAsa kastvamevetyuvAca sA ॥ 29 ॥
That lady began to suspect on observing a change in her happiness, endearment and attraction and asked him : who are you?

तुलस्युवाच ॥ को वा त्वं वद मामाशु भुक्ताहं मायया त्वया ॥ दूरीकृतं यत्सतीत्वमथ त्वां वै शपाम्यहम्॥2-5-41-३०॥
tulasyuvAca ॥ ko vA tvaM vada mAmAzu bhuktAhaM mAyayA tvayA ॥ dUrIkRtaM yatsatItvamatha tvAM vai zapAmyaham॥2-5-41-30॥
Tulasī said: Who are you? Tell me quickly. I have been enjoyed by you deceptively. My modesty has been outraged. Hence I am going to curse you.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ तुलसीवचनं श्रुत्वा हरिश्शापभयेन च॥ दधार लीलया ब्रह्मन्स्वमूर्तिं सुमनोहराम्॥३१॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ tulasIvacanaM zrutvA harizzApabhayena ca॥ dadhAra lIlayA brahmansvamUrtiM sumanoharAm॥31॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing the words of Tulasī, Viṣṇu became afraid of the curse. O Brahmin, sportively he re-assumed his own real beautiful form.

तद्दृष्ट्वा तुलसीरूपं ज्ञात्वा विष्णुं तु चिह्नतः ॥ पातिव्रत्यपरित्यागात् क्रुद्धा सा तमुवाच ह ॥३२॥
taddRSTvA tulasIrUpaM jJAtvA viSNuM tu cihnataH ॥ pAtivratyaparityAgAt kruddhA sA tamuvAca ha ॥32॥
On seeing the characteristic signs she guessed that it was Viṣṇu. Infuriated by the violation of her chastity she said.

तुलस्युवाच ॥ हे विष्णो ते दया नास्ति पाषाणसदृशं मनः ॥ पतिधर्मस्य भंगेन मम स्वामी हतः खलु ॥३३॥
tulasyuvAca ॥ he viSNo te dayA nAsti pASANasadRzaM manaH ॥ patidharmasya bhaMgena mama svAmI hataH khalu ॥33॥
Tulasī said: O Viṣṇu, you are ruthless. Your mind is likea rock. Since my chastity has been outraged my husband is doomed.

पाषाणसदृशस्त्वं च दयाहीनो यतः खलः ॥ तस्मात्पाषाणरूपस्त्वं मच्छापेन भवाधुना ॥ ३४ ॥
pASANasadRzastvaM ca dayAhIno yataH khalaH ॥ tasmAtpASANarUpastvaM macchApena bhavAdhunA ॥ 34 ॥
O wicked one, being ruthless you are like a rock. Hence due to my curse you will become a rock.

ये वदंति दयासिन्धुं त्वां भ्रांतास्ते न संशयः ॥ भक्तो विनापराधेन परार्थे च कथं हतः ॥३५॥
ye vadaMti dayAsindhuM tvAM bhrAMtAste na saMzayaH ॥ bhakto vinAparAdhena parArthe ca kathaM hataH ॥35॥
Those who call you ocean of mercy are erring. There is no doubt. How was a devotee killed for another man’s sake, even without any offence?

सनत्कुमार उवाच॥ इत्युक्त्वा तुलसी सा वै शंखचूडप्रिया सती ॥ भृशं रुरोद शोकार्ता विललाप भृशं मुहुः॥३६॥
sanatkumAra uvAca॥ ityuktvA tulasI sA vai zaMkhacUDapriyA satI ॥ bhRzaM ruroda zokArtA vilalApa bhRzaM muhuH॥36॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying this, the chaste beloved of Śaṅkhacūḍa, Tulasī lamented again and again in the excess of her grief.

ततस्तां रुदतीं दृष्ट्वा स विष्णुः परमेश्वरः ॥ सस्मार शंकरं देवं येन संमोहितं जगत् ॥३७॥
tatastAM rudatIM dRSTvA sa viSNuH paramezvaraH ॥ sasmAra zaMkaraM devaM yena saMmohitaM jagat ॥37॥
On seeing her crying, Viṣṇu remembered lord Śaṅkara, Parameśvara, by whom the universe is deluded.

ततः प्रादुर्बभूवाथ शंकरो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ हरिणा प्रणतश्चासीत्संनुतो विनयेन सः ॥ ३८ ॥
tataH prAdurbabhUvAtha zaMkaro bhaktavatsalaH ॥ hariNA praNatazcAsItsaMnuto vinayena saH ॥ 38 ॥
Then Śaṅkara, favourably disposed to his devotees appeared in front of them. He was bowed to and eulogised humbly by Viṣṇu.

शोकाकुलं हरिं दृष्ट्वा विलपंतीं च तत्प्रियाम् ॥ नयेन बोधयामास तं तां कृपणवत्सलाम् ॥ ३९ ॥
zokAkulaM hariM dRSTvA vilapaMtIM ca tatpriyAm ॥ nayena bodhayAmAsa taM tAM kRpaNavatsalAm ॥ 39 ॥
On seeing Viṣṇu distressed and the beloved lady lamenting, Śiva kind to the poor tactfully enlightened both of them.

शंकर उवाच ॥ मा रोदीस्तुलसि त्वं हि भुंक्ते कर्मफलं जनः ॥ सुखदुःखदो न कोप्यस्ति संसारे कर्मसागरे ॥ 2-5-41-४० ॥
zaMkara uvAca ॥ mA rodIstulasi tvaM hi bhuMkte karmaphalaM janaH ॥ sukhaduHkhado na kopyasti saMsAre karmasAgare ॥ 2-5-41-40 ॥
Śiva said: O Tulasī, do not cry. Every one reaps the fruit of his actions. In the world that is an ocean of actions and rites there is no external entity that bestows happiness and sorrow.

Listen to what is relevant to the context to get rid of misery. Let Viṣṇu of good intentions too, listen. I shall mention what is beneficent to both and conducive to happiness.

Sanatkumāra said: After saying so, Śiva narrated the greatness of Śālagrāma stone and Tulasī, that is highly meritorious.
