sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ tatra sthitvA dAnavendro mahAntaM dAnavezvaram ॥ dUtaM kRtvA mahAvijJaM preSayAmAsa zaMkaram ॥ 1 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Stationing himself there, the lord of Dānavas sent a leading Dānava of great knowledge as his emissary to Śiva.

The emissary went there and saw the moon-crested lord Śiva, of the refulgence of a crore suns, seated at the root of the Banyan tree.

kRtvA yogAsanaM dRSTyA mudrAyuktaM ca sasmitam ॥ zuddhasphaTikasaMkAzaM jvalaMtaM brahmatejasa ॥ 3 ॥
He saw him sitting in a yogic pose, showing the mystic gesture with his eyes, with a smiling face and body as pure as crystal and blazing with transcendent splendour.

trizUlapaTTizadharaM vyAghracarmAMbarAvRtam ॥ bhaktamRtyuharaM zAMtaM gaurIkAntaM trilocanam ॥ 4 ॥
He who holds a trident and spear, clothed in tiger skin, the remover of devotees’ death, peaceful, beloved of Gauri (Parvati), and three-eyed.

tapasAM phaladAtAraM karttAraM sarvasaMpadAm ॥ AzutoSaM prasannAsya bhaktAnugrahakArakam ॥5॥
The giver of the fruits of austerities, the creator of all wealth and prosperity, easily pleased (Āśutoṣa), with a smiling face, bestower of grace upon devotees.

Lord of the universe (Viśvanātha), the seed of the universe, the universal form and origin, the sustainer of the universe, its creator, and the cause of its dissolution.

kAraNaM kAraNAnAM ca narakArNavatAraNam ॥ jJAnapradaM jJAnabIjaM jJAnAnandaM sanAtanam ॥7॥
The cause of all causes, the savior from the ocean of worldly existence, the giver of knowledge, the seed of wisdom, the bliss of knowledge, and the eternal one.

avaruhya rathAd dUtastaM dRSTvA dAnavezvaraH॥ zaMkaraM sakumAraM ca zirasA praNanAma saH॥8॥
On seeing him, the messenger, the leader of Dānavas, descended from his chariot and bowed to him as well as to Kumāra.

वामतो भद्रकाली च स्कंदं तत्पुरतः स्थितम् ॥ लोकाशिषं ददौ तस्मै काली स्कंदश्च शंकरः ॥९॥
vAmato bhadrakAlI ca skaMdaM tatpurataH sthitam ॥ lokAziSaM dadau tasmai kAlI skaMdazca zaMkaraH ॥9॥
He saw Bhadrakālī to his left and Kārttikeya standing before him. Kālī, Kārttikeya and Śiva offered him the conventional benediction.

athAsau zaMkhacUDasya dUtaH paramazAstravit ॥ uvAca zaMkaraM natvA karau baddhvA zubhaM vacaH॥2-5-35-10॥
This emissary of Śaṅkhacūḍa, had full knowledge of the sacred texts. He joined his palms in reverence and bowing to him spoke the auspicious words.

॥ dUta uvAca ॥ zaMkhacUDasya dUto'haM tvatsakAzamihAgataH ॥ vartate te kimicchAdya tattvaM brUhi mahezvara ॥ 11 ॥
The Emissary said: O lord, I am the emissary of Śaṅkhacūḍa and have come to you. What is it that you desire? Please tell me.

On hearing these words of Śaṅkhacūḍa, lord Śiva became delighted and spoke.

mahAdeva uvAca ॥ zRNu dUta mahAprAjJa vaco mama sukhAvaham ॥ kathanIyamidaM tasmai nirvivAdaM vicArya ca ॥13॥
Lord Śiva said: O messenger of great intellect, listen to my words conducive to happiness. After pondering over this, without disputation, this shall be mentioned to him.

विधाता जगतां ब्रह्मा पिता धर्मस्य धर्मवित् ॥ मरीचिस्तस्य पुत्रश्च कश्यपस्तत्सुतः स्मृतः ॥ १४ ॥
vidhAtA jagatAM brahmA pitA dharmasya dharmavit ॥ marIcistasya putrazca kazyapastatsutaH smRtaH ॥ 14 ॥
Brahmā is the creator of the worlds and father of Dharma. He knows virtue. Marīci is his son. Kaśyapa is Marīci’s son.

dakSaH prItyA dadau tasmai nijakanyAstrayodaza ॥ tAsvekA ca danussAdhvI tatsaubhAgyavivarddhinI ॥15॥
Dakṣa gave him his thirteen daughters, with pleasure. Among them the chaste lady Danu increased his fortune to a great extent.

चत्वारस्ते दनोः पुत्रा दानवास्तेजसोल्बणाः ॥ तेष्वेको विप्रचित्तिस्तु महाबलपराक्रमः ॥१६॥
catvAraste danoH putrA dAnavAstejasolbaNAH ॥ teSveko vipracittistu mahAbalaparAkramaH ॥16॥
Danu gave birth to four sons called Dānavas. They were vigorous and powerful. Vipracitti of great strength and valour was one of them.

तत्पुत्रो धार्मिको दंभो दानवेन्द्रो महामतिः ॥ तस्य त्वं तनयः श्रेष्ठो धर्मात्मा दानवेश्वरः॥१७॥
tatputro dhArmiko daMbho dAnavendro mahAmatiH ॥ tasya tvaM tanayaH zreSTho dharmAtmA dAnavezvaraH॥17॥
His son, the virtuous Dambha of great intellect was the ruler of Dānavas. You are his excellent son, a pious soul, and the lord of Dānavas.

पुरा त्वं पाषर्दो गोपो गोपेष्वेव च धार्मिकः ॥ अधुना राधिकाशापाज्जातस्त्वं दानवेश्वरः ॥१८॥
purA tvaM pASardo gopo gopeSveva ca dhArmikaH ॥ adhunA rAdhikAzApAjjAtastvaM dAnavezvaraH ॥18॥
In previous birth you were a cowherd and an attendant of Kṛṣṇa. Among the cowherds you were virtuous. As a result of Rādhā’s curse, you are born as Dānava and have become the king of Dānavas.

दानवीं योनिमायातस्तत्त्वतो न हि दानवः ॥ निजवृतं पुरा ज्ञात्वा देववैरं त्यजाधुना ॥ १९ ॥
dAnavIM yonimAyAtastattvato na hi dAnavaH ॥ nijavRtaM purA jJAtvA devavairaM tyajAdhunA ॥ 19 ॥
You are casually born as a Dānava. You are really no Dānava. Realising your previous birth you leave off your inimical attitude to the gods.

द्रोहं न कुरु तैस्सार्द्धं स्वपदं भुंक्ष्व सादरम् ॥ नाधिकं सविकारं च कुरु राज्यं विचार्य च ॥ 2-5-35-२० ॥
drohaM na kuru taissArddhaM svapadaM bhuMkSva sAdaram ॥ nAdhikaM savikAraM ca kuru rAjyaM vicArya ca ॥ 2-5-35-20 ॥
Don’t be malicious towards them. You can enjoy your kingdom zealously. Do not try to expand your kingdom nor spoil it.

देहि राज्यं च देवानां मत्प्रीतिं रक्ष दानव ॥ निजराज्ये सुखं तिष्ठ तिष्ठंतु स्वपदे सुराः ॥ २१ ॥
dehi rAjyaM ca devAnAM matprItiM rakSa dAnava ॥ nijarAjye sukhaM tiSTha tiSThaMtu svapade surAH ॥ 21 ॥
O Dānava, return their kingdom to the gods. Maintain my affection. Stay in your kingdom happily. Let the gods stay in their region.

अलं भूतविरोधेन देवद्रोहेण किं पुनः ॥ कुलीनाश्शुद्धकर्माणः सर्वे कश्यपवंशजाः ॥ २२ ॥
alaM bhUtavirodhena devadroheNa kiM punaH ॥ kulInAzzuddhakarmANaH sarve kazyapavaMzajAH ॥ 22 ॥
Do not offend people. Don’t be malicious to the gods. The descendants of Kaśyapa are noble and indulge in pure activities.

यानि कानि च पापानि ब्रह्महत्या दिकानि च ॥ ज्ञातिद्रोहजपापस्य कलां नार्हंति षोडशीम् ॥ २३ ॥
yAni kAni ca pApAni brahmahatyA dikAni ca ॥ jJAtidrohajapApasya kalAM nArhaMti SoDazIm ॥ 23 ॥
Whatever sin is there in the world, even including that of slaughter of a brahmin, does not merit even a sixteenth part of the sin accruing from the offence towards kinsmen.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्यादिबहुवार्त्तां च श्रुतिस्मृतिपरां शुभाम् ॥ प्रोवाच शंकरस्तस्मै बोधयन् ज्ञानमुत्तमम् ॥ २४ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityAdibahuvArttAM ca zrutismRtiparAM zubhAm ॥ provAca zaMkarastasmai bodhayan jJAnamuttamam ॥ 24 ॥
These and many such words of advice, auspiciously based on injunctions of Śruti and Smṛti, Śiva said to him enlightening him in an excellent manner.

शिक्षितश्शंखचूडेन स दूतस्तर्कवित्तम ॥ उवाच वचनं नम्रो भवितव्यविमोहितः ॥ २५ ॥
zikSitazzaMkhacUDena sa dUtastarkavittama ॥ uvAca vacanaM namro bhavitavyavimohitaH ॥ 25 ॥
The emissary who had been well instructed by Śaṅkhacūḍa who knew his duties well but who had been deluded by destiny spoke these words humbly.

दूत उवाच ॥ त्वया यत्कथितं देव नान्यथा तत्तथा वचः ॥ तथ्यं किंचिद्यथार्थं च श्रूयतां मे निवेदनम् ॥ २६ ॥
dUta uvAca ॥ tvayA yatkathitaM deva nAnyathA tattathA vacaH ॥ tathyaM kiMcidyathArthaM ca zrUyatAM me nivedanam ॥ 26 ॥
The messenger said: O lord, what has been narrated by you is true. It cannot be otherwise. But let my submission based on certain factual elements be heard.

ज्ञातिद्रोहे महत्पापं त्वयोक्तमधुना च यत् ॥ तत्किमीशासुराणां च न सुराणां वद प्रभो ॥२७॥
jJAtidrohe mahatpApaM tvayoktamadhunA ca yat ॥ tatkimIzAsurANAM ca na surANAM vada prabho ॥27॥
O lord Śiva, verily a great sin has been cited as the result of offence to kinsmen by you now. But does it concern only Asuras and not the gods? Please tell me.

sarveSAmiti cettadvai tadA vacmi vicArya ca ॥ nirNayaM brUhi tatrAdya kuru saMdehabhaMjanam ॥ 28 ॥
If it applies to all alike, I shall consider it and let you know. Please tell me your decision at the outset and clear my doubts.

O lord Śiva, why did the discus-bearing lord Viṣṇu sever the heads of Madhu and Kaiṭabha the excellent Daityas in the ocean of dissolution?

tripuraissaha saMyuddhaM bhasmatvakaraNaM kutaH ॥ bhavAJcakAra giriza surapakSIti vizrutam ॥ 2-5-35-30 ॥
Your Majesty too, O Śiva, is famous as a partisan of the gods. Why did you fight with the Tripuras and reduce them to ashes?

gRhItvA tasya sarvasvaM kutaH prasthApito baliH ॥ sutalAdi samuddhartuM taddvAre ca gadAdharaH ॥ 31 ॥
After divesting him of every thing why was Bali packed off to Sutala and other regions? Did Viṣṇu go to his threshold as his uplifter?

sabhrAtRko hiraNyAkSaH kathaM devaizca hiMsitaH ॥ zuMbhAdayo'surAzcaiva kathaM devairnipAtitAH ॥ 32 ॥
Why was Hiraṇyākṣa harassed by the gods along with his brother? Why were Śumbha and other Asuras subjected to fall by the gods?

purA samudramathane pIyUSaM bhakSitaM suraiH ॥ klezabhAjo vayaM tatra te sarve phalabhoginaH॥33॥
Formerly when the ocean was churned, the nectar was drunk off by the gods.All the strain and stress was ours but the gods reaped the fruit of our endeavour.

क्रीडाभांडमिदं विश्वं कालस्य परमात्मनः॥ स ददाति यदा यस्मै तस्यै तस्यैश्वर्यं भवे त्तदा ॥३४॥
krIDAbhAMDamidaM vizvaM kAlasya paramAtmanaH॥ sa dadAti yadA yasmai tasyai tasyaizvaryaM bhave ttadA ॥34॥
The entire universe is but an object of sport of Kāla the supreme soul. Whomsoever and whensoever he pleases to bestow the riches he atttains them.

देवदानवयोर्वैरं शश्वनैमित्तिकं सदा ॥ पराजयो जयस्तेषां कालाधीनः क्रमेण च ॥ ३५ ॥
devadAnavayorvairaM zazvanaimittikaM sadA ॥ parAjayo jayasteSAM kAlAdhInaH krameNa ca ॥ 35 ॥
The enmity of the gods and the Dānavas is perpetual and sparked off due to some reason or other. By turns, subject to the whims of Kāla they enjoy victory or defeat.

तवानयोर्विरोधे च गमनं निष्फलं भवेत् ॥ समसंबंधिनां तद्वै रोचते नेश्वरस्य ते ॥ ३६ ॥
tavAnayorvirodhe ca gamanaM niSphalaM bhavet ॥ samasaMbaMdhinAM tadvai rocate nezvarasya te ॥ 36 ॥
Interference on your part in the dispute between the two is futile. This does not behove you, the lord who are equally in touch with both.

सुरासुराणां सर्वेषामीश्वरस्य महात्मनः ॥ इयं ते रहिता लज्जा स्पर्द्धास्माभिस्सहाधुना ॥ ३७ ॥
surAsurANAM sarveSAmIzvarasya mahAtmanaH ॥ iyaM te rahitA lajjA sparddhAsmAbhissahAdhunA ॥ 37 ॥
Your rivalry to us is excessively shameful since you are lord unto the gods as well as to the Asuras. You are the supreme soul.

यतोधिका चैव कीर्तिर्हानिश्चैव पराजये ॥ तवैतद्विपरीतं च मनसा संविचार्य ताम् ॥३८॥
yatodhikA caiva kIrtirhAnizcaiva parAjaye ॥ tavaitadviparItaM ca manasA saMvicArya tAm ॥38॥
In the event of your victory your fame is not enhanced. In the event of your defeat you suffer a great loss. Let this disadvantage be pondered over.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityetadvacanaM zrutvA saMprahasya trilocanaH॥ yathocitaM ca madhuramuvAca dAnavezvaram ॥39॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words, the three-eyed lord laughed and spoke sweetly to the leading Dānava what seemed proper.

महेश उवाच ॥ वयं भक्तपराधीना न स्वतंत्राः कदापि हि ॥ तदिच्छया तत्कर्माणो न कस्यापि च पक्षिणः ॥2-5-35-४०॥

Lord Śiva said: We are subservient to our devotees. We are never independent. We carry out their tasks at their wish. We are not the partisans of any one in particular.

Really you are the foremost of the comrades of Kṛṣṇa, the great soul. Those Daityas who had been formerly killed are not on a par with you.

Go to Śaṅkhacūḍa and tell him what I have said. Let him do what is proper. I shall carry out the taṣk of the gods.

Sanatkumāra said: On saying this, Śiva the great god, stopped. The emissary stood up and returned to Śaṅkhacñḍa.
