vyAsa uvAca ॥ vidhitAta mahAbuddhe mune jIva ciraM samAH ॥ kathitaM sumahaccitraM caritaM candramaulinaH ॥1॥
Vyāsa said: O dear son of Brahmā, O sage of great intellect, live long for many years. You have narrated the great story of the mooncrested lord.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ atha dUte gate tatra zaMkhacUDaH pratApavAn ॥ uvAca tulasIM vArtAM gatvAbhyaMtarameva tAm ॥ 3 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: When the messenger returned, the valorous Śaṅkhacūḍa went in and told his wife Tulasī all the details.

शङ्खचूड उवाच ॥ शम्भुदूतमुखाद्देवि युद्धायाहं समुद्यतः ॥ तेन गच्छाम्यहं योद्धुं शासनं कुरु मे ध्रुवम् ॥ ४ ॥
zaGkhacUDa uvAca ॥ zambhudUtamukhAddevi yuddhAyAhaM samudyataH ॥ tena gacchAmyahaM yoddhuM zAsanaM kuru me dhruvam ॥ 4 ॥
O dear lady, infuriated by the words of Śiva’s messenger I have prepared for a war. Hence I am going to fight. You carry out my directions.

ityevamuktvA sa jJAnI nAnAbodhanataH priyAm॥ krIDAM cakAra harSeNa tamanAdRtya zaMkaram ॥ 5 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying this and slighting Śiva, that demon professing to be wise advised his wife in various ways and sported with her with delight.

tau dampatI cikrIDAte nimagnau sukhasAgare ॥ nAnAkAmakalAbhizca nizi cATuzutairapi ॥ 6 ॥
Throughout that night, the couple indulged in sexual dalliance. Uttering coaxing and cajoling words, practising various erotic arts, they immersed themselves in the ocean of happiness.

ब्राह्मे मुहूर्त उत्थाय प्रातःकृत्यं विधाय च ॥ नित्यकार्यं च कृत्वादौ ददौ दानमनंतकम् ॥ ७ ॥
brAhme muhUrta utthAya prAtaHkRtyaM vidhAya ca ॥ nityakAryaM ca kRtvAdau dadau dAnamanaMtakam ॥ 7 ॥
He got up in the Brāhma Muhūrta,and finished his daily routine in the morning. He then performed the offering of charitable gifts.

पुत्रं कृत्वा च राजेन्द्रं सर्वेषु दान वेषु च ॥ पुत्रे समर्प्य भार्यां च स राज्यं सर्वसंपदम् ॥ ८ ॥
putraM kRtvA ca rAjendraM sarveSu dAna veSu ca ॥ putre samarpya bhAryAM ca sa rAjyaM sarvasaMpadam ॥ 8 ॥
He crowned his son as the lord of Dānavas. He entrusted his wife, his kingdom and his riches to the care of his son.

प्रियामाश्वासयामास स राजा रुदतीं पुनः ॥ निषेधतीं च गमनं नाना वार्तां प्रकथ्य च ॥ ९ ।
priyAmAzvAsayAmAsa sa rAjA rudatIM punaH ॥ niSedhatIM ca gamanaM nAnA vArtAM prakathya ca ॥ 9 ।
When his wife cried and dissuaded him from going to the war he consoled her by various words of appeasement.

निजसेनापतिं वीरं समाहूय समादृतः ॥ आदिदेश स सनद्धस्संग्रामं कर्तुऽमुद्यतः ॥ 2-5-34-१० ॥
nijasenApatiM vIraM samAhUya samAdRtaH ॥ Adideza sa sanaddhassaMgrAmaM kartu'mudyataH ॥ 2-5-34-10 ॥
He called his general and ordered him to be ready for the war.

शंखचूड उवाच॥ अद्य सेनापते वीरास्सर्वे समरशालिनः ॥ संनद्धाखिलकर्माणो निर्गच्छंतु रणाय च ॥ ११ ॥
zaMkhacUDa uvAca॥ adya senApate vIrAssarve samarazAlinaH ॥ saMnaddhAkhilakarmANo nirgacchaMtu raNAya ca ॥ 11 ॥
Śaṅkhacūḍa said: O general, let the heroic warriors start for the war. Let them be ready for action; they have been trained well for the war.

दैत्याश्च दानवाः शूरा षडशीतिरुदा युधाः ॥ कंकानां बलिनां शीघ्रं सेना निर्यांतु निर्भयाः ॥ १२ ॥
daityAzca dAnavAH zUrA SaDazItirudA yudhAH ॥ kaMkAnAM balinAM zIghraM senA niryAMtu nirbhayAH ॥ 12 ॥
Let the heroic Dānavas and Daityas, the armies of the powerful Kaṅkas of eighty-six divisions well-equipped in arms set out fearlessly.

पञ्चाशदसुराणां हि निर्गच्छंतु कुलानि वै ॥ कोटिवीर्याणि युद्धार्थं शम्भुना देवपक्षिणा ॥ १३ ॥
paJcAzadasurANAM hi nirgacchaMtu kulAni vai ॥ koTivIryANi yuddhArthaM zambhunA devapakSiNA ॥ 13 ॥
Let the fifty families of Asuras, having the heroism and prowess of a crore set out to fight with Śiva, the partisan of the gods.

संनद्धानि च धौम्राणां कुलानि च शतं द्रुतम् ॥ निर्गच्छंतु रणार्थं हि शम्भुना मम शासनात् ॥ १४ ॥
saMnaddhAni ca dhaumrANAM kulAni ca zataM drutam ॥ nirgacchaMtu raNArthaM hi zambhunA mama zAsanAt ॥ 14 ॥
At my bidding, let the hundred armed families of Dhaumras speedily set out to fight with Śiva.

कालकेयाश्च मौर्याश्च दौर्हृदाः कालकास्तथा ॥ सज्जा निर्यान्तु युद्धाय रुद्रेण मम शासनात् ॥ १५ ॥
kAlakeyAzca mauryAzca daurhRdAH kAlakAstathA ॥ sajjA niryAntu yuddhAya rudreNa mama zAsanAt ॥ 15 ॥
At my behest, let the Kālakeyas Mauryas, Dauhṛdas and the Kālakas set out ready for the fight with Śiva.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityAjJApyAsurapatirdAnavendro mahAbalaH ॥ nirjagAma mahAsainyaH sahasraibahubhirvRtaH ॥ 16 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: After ordering thus, the powerful lord of Asuras and the Emperor of the Dānavas set out surrounded by thousands of warriors and great armies.

तस्य सेनापतिश्चैव युद्धशास्त्रविशारदः ॥ महारथो महावीरो रथिनां प्रवरो रणे ॥ १७ ॥
tasya senApatizcaiva yuddhazAstravizAradaH ॥ mahAratho mahAvIro rathinAM pravaro raNe ॥ 17 ॥
His general was an expert in the science and technique of warfare. He was the best of charioteers a great hero and skilled in warfare.

त्रिलक्षाक्षौहिणीयुक्तो मांडल्यं च चकार ह ॥ बहिर्बभूव शिबिराद्रणे वीरभयङ्करः ॥१८॥
trilakSAkSauhiNIyukto mAMDalyaM ca cakAra ha ॥ bahirbabhUva zibirAdraNe vIrabhayaGkaraH ॥18॥
He had three hundred thousand Akṣauhiṇī armies. He performed the rites of auspicious beginning and came out of the camp. He was terrible to the watching heroes.

रत्नेन्द्रं सारनिर्माणं विमानमभिरुह्य सः ॥ गुरुवर्गं पुरस्कृत्य रणार्थं प्रययौ किल॥१९ ॥
ratnendraM sAranirmANaM vimAnamabhiruhya saH ॥ guruvargaM puraskRtya raNArthaM prayayau kila॥19 ॥
Mounting on an aerial chariot of exquisite build and inlaid with gems, and making obeisance to the elders and preceptors he set out for the battle.

पुष्पभद्रानदीतीरे यत्राक्षयवटः शुभः ॥ सिद्धाश्रमे च सिद्धानां सिद्धिक्षेत्रं सुसिद्धिदम्॥2-5-34-२०॥
puSpabhadrAnadItIre yatrAkSayavaTaH zubhaH ॥ siddhAzrame ca siddhAnAM siddhikSetraM susiddhidam॥2-5-34-20॥
In the holy land of Bhārata, to the east of the western ocean and to the west of Malaya mountain, on the banks of river Puṣpabhadrā there is a hermitage of Kapila with an auspicious holy Banyan tree.

कपिलस्य ततः स्थानं पुण्यक्षेत्रे च भारते ॥ पश्चिमोदधिपूर्वे च मलयस्य हि पश्चिमे॥२१॥
kapilasya tataH sthAnaM puNyakSetre ca bhArate ॥ pazcimodadhipUrve ca malayasya hi pazcime॥21॥
It is called Siddhāśrama. It is the place where holy men achieve the result of their action.

श्रीशैलोत्तरभागे च गंधमादनदक्षिणे ॥ पंचयोजनविस्तीर्णं दैर्घ्ये शतगुणस्तथा॥२२॥
zrIzailottarabhAge ca gaMdhamAdanadakSiNe ॥ paMcayojanavistIrNaM dairghye zataguNastathA॥22॥
It is to the north of Śrīśaila and to the south of Gaṇḍhamādana. It is five Yojanas in width and a hundred times as much in length.

शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशा भारते च सुपुण्यदा॥ पुष्पभद्रा नदी रम्या जलपूर्णा सरस्वती॥२३॥
zuddhasphaTikasaMkAzA bhArate ca supuNyadA॥ puSpabhadrA nadI ramyA jalapUrNA sarasvatI॥23॥
The river Puṣpabhadrā is very beautiful and full of transparent water. It confers merits on everyone in Bhārata, like the river Sarasvatī.

लवणोदधिप्रिया भार्या शश्वत्सौभाग्यसं युता ॥ सरस्वतीसंश्रिता च निर्गता सा हिमालयात् ॥२४॥
lavaNodadhipriyA bhAryA zazvatsaubhAgyasaM yutA ॥ sarasvatIsaMzritA ca nirgatA sA himAlayAt ॥24॥
It starts from Himālaya, has its confluence with Sarasvatī. It is the beloved of the briny sea and blessess people with good fortune.

गोमंतं वामतः कृत्वा प्रविष्टा पश्चिमोदधौ ॥ तत्र गत्वा शंखचूडः शिव सेनां ददर्श ह ॥२५॥
gomaMtaM vAmataH kRtvA praviSTA pazcimodadhau ॥ tatra gatvA zaMkhacUDaH ziva senAM dadarza ha ॥25॥
It enters the western ocean where Gomanta is on its left. Śaṅkhacūḍa went there and saw the army of Śiva.
