vyAsa uvAca ॥ brahmaputra namaste'stu dhanyastvaM zaivasattama ॥ yacchrAvitA mahAdivyA katheyaM zAMkarI zubhA ॥ 1 ॥
Vyāsa said: O son of Brahmā, obeisance be to you. O excellent devotee of Śiva, you are blessed, since you have narrated this highly divine and auspicious story of Siva.

idAnIM brUhi suprItyA caritaM vaiSNavaM mune ॥ sa vRndAM mohayitvA tu kimakArSItkuto gataH ॥ 2 ॥
O sage, now narrate lovingly the story of Viṣṇu. After enchanting Vṛndā what did he do? Where did he go?

॥ sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zRNu vyAsa mahAprAjJa zaivapravara sattama ॥ vaiSNavaM caritaM zaMbhucaritADhyaM sunirmalam ॥ 3 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: O Vyāsa, listen. O intelligent excellent devotee of Śiva, listen to the good story of Viṣṇu mingled with the story of Śiva.

maunIbhUteSu deveSu brahmAdiSu mahezvaraH ॥ suprasanno'vadacchaMbhuzzaraNAgata vatsalaH ॥ 4 ॥
When Brahmā and other gods became silent, lord Śiva, favourably disposed to those who seek refuge in him, was delighted and said.

zaMbhuruvAca ॥ brahmandevavarAssarve bhavadarthe mayA hataH ॥ jalaMdharo madaMzopi satyaM satyaM vadAmyaham ॥ 5 ॥
Śiva said: O Brahmā, O ye excellent gods, it is for you that Jalandhara has been killed by me although he was a part of myself. Truth. It is the truth that I say.

सुखमापुर्न वा तातास्सत्यं ब्रूतामराः खलु ॥ भवत्कृते हि मे लीला निर्विकारस्य सर्वदा ॥ ६ ॥
sukhamApurna vA tAtAssatyaM brUtAmarAH khalu ॥ bhavatkRte hi me lIlA nirvikArasya sarvadA ॥ 6 ॥
O dear gods, tell me the truth. Have or have not you attained happiness? It is for you that I indulge in sports though I am always free from all aberrations.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ atha brahmAdayo devA harSAdutphullalocanAH ॥ praNamya zirasA rudraM zazaMsurviSNuceSTitam ॥ 7 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Then Brahmā and other gods, with eyes blooming with delight, bowed to Śiva with bent heads and mentioned to him the activities of Viṣṇu.

॥ देवा ऊचुः ॥ महादेव त्वया देवा रक्षिता श्शत्रुजाद्भयात् ॥ किंचिदन्यत्समुद्भूतं तत्र किं करवामहै ॥ ८ ॥
॥ devA UcuH ॥ mahAdeva tvayA devA rakSitA zzatrujAdbhayAt ॥ kiMcidanyatsamudbhUtaM tatra kiM karavAmahai ॥ 8 ॥
The gods said: O great lord, all the gods have been saved by you from the danger of the enemy but another event has happened. What shall we do in that respect?

वृन्दां विमोहिता नाथ विष्णुना हि प्रयत्नतः ॥ भस्मीभूता द्रुतं वह्नौ परमां गतिमागता ॥ ९ ॥
vRndAM vimohitA nAtha viSNunA hi prayatnataH ॥ bhasmIbhUtA drutaM vahnau paramAM gatimAgatA ॥ 9 ॥
O lord, Vṛndā was fascinated by Viṣṇu. She burnt herself on the pyre and attained the great goal.

वृन्दालावण्यसंभ्रांतो विष्णुस्तिष्ठति मोहितः ॥ तच्चिताभस्म संधारी तव मायाविमोहितः ॥ 2-5-26-१० ॥
vRndAlAvaNyasaMbhrAMto viSNustiSThati mohitaH ॥ taccitAbhasma saMdhArI tava mAyAvimohitaH ॥ 2-5-26-10 ॥
But Viṣṇu deluded by your illusion is excessively agitated by the beauty of Vṛndā. He has smeared himself with the ashes from her pyre.

sa siddhamunisaMghaizca bodhito'smAbhirAdarAt ॥ na budhyate harissotha tava mAyAvimohitaH ॥ 11 ॥
Although advised and consoled by the Siddhas and sages, and pacified by us with respect, Viṣṇu deluded by your illusion does not come to his former self.

कृपां कुरु महेशान विष्णुं बोधय बोधय ॥ त्वदधीनमिदं सर्वं प्राकृतं सचराचरम् ॥ १२ ॥
kRpAM kuru mahezAna viSNuM bodhaya bodhaya ॥ tvadadhInamidaM sarvaM prAkRtaM sacarAcaram ॥ 12 ॥
O lord Śiva, be pleased. Restore Viṣṇu to his former self. This entire creation born of Prakṛti and consisting of the mobile and immobile beings, is subservient to you.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityAkarNya mahezo hi vacanaM tridivaukasAm ॥ pratyuvAca mahAlIlassvacchandastAnkRtAMjalIn ॥ 13 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of the gods, lord Śiva of great sports and free to act as he pleases replied to them as they stood with palms joined in reverence.

महेश उवाच ॥ हे ब्रह्मन्हे सुरास्सर्वे मद्वाक्यं शृणुतादरात् ॥ मोहिनी सर्वलोकानां मम माया दुरत्यया ॥१४॥
maheza uvAca ॥ he brahmanhe surAssarve madvAkyaM zRNutAdarAt ॥ mohinI sarvalokAnAM mama mAyA duratyayA ॥14॥
Lord Śiva said: O Brahmā, O gods, you listen to my words attentively. My illusion deludes all the worlds. It cannot be transgressed.

तदधीनं जगत्सर्वं यद्देवासुरमानुषम् ॥ तयैव मोहितो विष्णुः कामाधीनोऽभवद्धरिः ॥ १५ ॥
tadadhInaM jagatsarvaM yaddevAsuramAnuSam ॥ tayaiva mohito viSNuH kAmAdhIno'bhavaddhariH ॥ 15 ॥
The entire universe including gods and human beings is subservient to it. Viṣṇu too was deluded by that illusion and became a prey to the lustful love.

उमाख्या सा महादेवी त्रिदेवजननी परा ॥ मूलप्रकृतिराख्याता सुरामा गिरिजात्मिका ॥१६॥
umAkhyA sA mahAdevI tridevajananI parA ॥ mUlaprakRtirAkhyAtA surAmA girijAtmikA ॥16॥
That illusion is given various names: Umā, Mahādevī, the mother of the three deities, the greatest, primordial Mūlaprakṛti and the lovely woman Pārvatī.

गच्छध्वं शरणा देवा विष्णुमोहापनुत्तये ॥ शरण्यां मोहिनीमायां शिवाख्यां सर्वकामदाम् ॥ १७॥
gacchadhvaM zaraNA devA viSNumohApanuttaye ॥ zaraNyAM mohinImAyAM zivAkhyAM sarvakAmadAm ॥ 17॥
O gods, seek refuge in that fascinating goddess named illusion, for the removal of Viṣṇu’s delusion. She is the bestower of cherished desires and worthy of being sought refuge in.

स्तुतिं कुरुत तस्याश्च मच्छक्तेस्तोषकारिणीम् ॥ सुप्रसन्ना यदि च सा सर्वकार्यं करिष्यति ॥१८॥
stutiM kuruta tasyAzca macchaktestoSakAriNIm ॥ suprasannA yadi ca sA sarvakAryaM kariSyati ॥18॥
Sing the eulogy that satisfies my Śakti. If she is delighted, she will carry out your tasks.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा तान्सुराञ्शंभुः पञ्चास्यो भगवान्हरः ॥ अंतर्दधे द्रुतं व्यास सर्वैश्च स्वगणैस्सह ॥१९॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktvA tAnsurAJzaMbhuH paJcAsyo bhagavAnharaH ॥ aMtardadhe drutaM vyAsa sarvaizca svagaNaissaha ॥19॥
Sanatkumāra said: O Vyāsa, after saying this to the gods, the five-faced lord Śiva vanished suddenly along with his Gaṇas.

देवाश्च शासनाच्छंभोर्ब्रह्माद्या हि सवासवा ॥ मनसा तुष्टुवुर्मूलप्रकृतिं भक्तवत्सलाम्॥2-5-26-२०॥
devAzca zAsanAcchaMbhorbrahmAdyA hi savAsavA ॥ manasA tuSTuvurmUlaprakRtiM bhaktavatsalAm॥2-5-26-20॥
At the bidding of Śiva, Brahmā and other gods including Indra mentally eulogised to the primordial Prakṛti favourably disposed to her devotees.

देवा ऊचुः ॥ यदुद्भवास्सत्त्वरजस्तमोगुणाः सर्गस्थितिध्वंसविधान कारका ॥ यदिच्छया विश्वमिदं भवाभवौ तनोति मूलप्रकृतिं नताः स्म ताम् ॥२१॥
devA UcuH ॥ yadudbhavAssattvarajastamoguNAH sargasthitidhvaMsavidhAna kArakA ॥ yadicchayA vizvamidaM bhavAbhavau tanoti mUlaprakRtiM natAH sma tAm ॥21॥
The gods said: We bow to the primordial Prakṛti from which emanate the three attributes Sattva, Rajas and Tamas that cause creation, sustenance and annihilation, and by whose desire the universe is evolved and dissolved.

पाहि त्रयोविंशगुणान्सुशब्दिताञ्जगत्यशेषे समधिष्ठिता परा ॥ यद्रूपकर्माणिजगत्त्रयोऽपि ते विदुर्न मूलप्रकृतिं नताः स्म ताम् ॥२२॥
pAhi trayoviMzaguNAnsuzabditAJjagatyazeSe samadhiSThitA parA ॥ yadrUpakarmANijagattrayo'pi te vidurna mUlaprakRtiM natAH sma tAm ॥22॥
May the great illusion save us, the great Prakṛti that presides over the twentythree principles, well enunciated in the universe. We bow to the primordial Prakṛti whose forms and activities are not known to the three worlds.

यद्भक्तियुक्ताः पुरुषास्तु नित्यं दारिद्र्यमोहात्ययसंभवादीन् ॥ न प्राप्नुवंत्येव हि भक्तवत्सलां सदैव मूलप्रकृतिं नताः स्म ताम्॥२३॥
yadbhaktiyuktAH puruSAstu nityaM dAridryamohAtyayasaMbhavAdIn ॥ na prApnuvaMtyeva hi bhaktavatsalAM sadaiva mUlaprakRtiM natAH sma tAm॥23॥
We bow to the primordial Prakṛti favourably disposed to the devotees. Persons endowed with devotion to her are not bedevilled by poverty, delusion and destruction.

कुरु कार्यं महादेवि देवानां नः परेश्वरि ॥ विष्णुमोहं ह शिवे दुर्गे देवि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥२४॥
kuru kAryaM mahAdevi devAnAM naH parezvari ॥ viSNumohaM ha zive durge devi namo'stu te ॥24॥
O great goddess, please carry out our tasks. O Pārvatī, please remove the delusion of Viṣṇu. O goddess Durgā, obeisance be to you.

जलंधरस्य शंभोश्च रणे कैलासवासिनः ॥ प्रवृत्ते तद्वधार्थाय गौरीशासनतश्शिवे ॥ २५ ॥
jalaMdharasya zaMbhozca raNe kailAsavAsinaH ॥ pravRtte tadvadhArthAya gaurIzAsanatazzive ॥ 25 ॥
O Śivā, when the fight between Jalandhara and Śiva started, for killing Jalandhara, Vṛndā was deluded by Viṣṇu at the bidding of Gaurī.

वृन्दा विमोहिता देवि विष्णुना हि प्रयत्नतः ॥ स्ववृषात्त्याजिता वह्नौ भस्मीभूता गतिं गता ॥२६॥
vRndA vimohitA devi viSNunA hi prayatnataH ॥ svavRSAttyAjitA vahnau bhasmIbhUtA gatiM gatA ॥26॥
She was made to forsake her virtue and reduced to ashes in the fire. She attained salvation.

जलंधरो हतो युद्धे तद्भयान्मो चिता वयम् ॥ गिरिशेन कृपां कृत्वा भक्तानुग्रहकारिणा ॥ २७ ॥
jalaMdharo hato yuddhe tadbhayAnmo citA vayam ॥ girizena kRpAM kRtvA bhaktAnugrahakAriNA ॥ 27 ॥
Jalandhara was slain in the battle by Śiva who took pity on us and who always blesses his devotees. We have been relieved from his fear.

तदाज्ञया वयं सर्वे शरणं ते समागताः ॥ त्वं हि शंभुर्युवां देवि भक्तोद्धारपरायणौ ॥ २८ ॥
tadAjJayA vayaM sarve zaraNaM te samAgatAH ॥ tvaM hi zaMbhuryuvAM devi bhaktoddhAraparAyaNau ॥ 28 ॥
It is at his bidding that we all have sought refuge in you. You and Śiva, O goddess, are always engaged in uplifting your devotees.

vRndAlAvaNyasaMbhrAto viSNustiSThati tatra vai ॥ taccitAbhasmasaMdhArI jJAnabhraSTo vimohitaH ॥29॥
Infatuated by the beauty of Vṛndā, Viṣṇu is staying there itself. He has lost his balance. He is deluded. He has smeared himself with the ashes from her pyre.

संसिद्धसुरसंघैश्च बोधितोऽपि महेश्वरि ॥ न बुध्यते हरिस्सोथ तव मायाविमोहितः ॥2-5-26-३०॥
saMsiddhasurasaMghaizca bodhito'pi mahezvari ॥ na budhyate harissotha tava mAyAvimohitaH ॥2-5-26-30॥
O great goddess deluded by your illusion, Viṣṇu does not come to his own though advised and consoled by the gods and Siddhas.

कृपां कुरु महादेवि हरिं बोधय बोधय । यथा स्वलोकं पायात्स सुचित्तस्सुरकार्यकृत् ॥ ३१ ॥
kRpAM kuru mahAdevi hariM bodhaya bodhaya । yathA svalokaM pAyAtsa sucittassurakAryakRt ॥ 31 ॥
O great goddess, be merciful. Enlighten Viṣṇu so that he shall return to his region and carry out the task of the gods with a settled mind.

iti stuvaMtaste devAstejomaMDalamAsthitam ॥ dadRzurgagane tatra jvAlAvyAptA digaMtaram॥ 32 ॥
Eulogising thus, the gods saw a sphere of refulgence in the sky pervading all the quarters with its flames.

तन्मध्याद्भारतीं सर्वे ब्रह्माद्याश्च सवासवाः ॥ अमराश्शुश्रुवुर्व्यास कामदां व्योमचारिणीम् ॥३३ ॥
tanmadhyAdbhAratIM sarve brahmAdyAzca savAsavAH ॥ amarAzzuzruvurvyAsa kAmadAM vyomacAriNIm ॥33 ॥
O Vyāsa, Brahmā and other gods including Indra heard a celestial voice from the sky bestowing their desire.

आकाशवाण्युवाच ॥ अहमेव त्रिधा भिन्ना तिष्ठामि त्रिविधैर्गुणैः ॥ गौरी लक्ष्मीः सुरा ज्योती रजस्सत्त्वतमोगुणैः ॥ ३४ ॥
AkAzavANyuvAca ॥ ahameva tridhA bhinnA tiSThAmi trividhairguNaiH ॥ gaurI lakSmIH surA jyotI rajassattvatamoguNaiH ॥ 34 ॥
The celestial voice said: O gods, it is I who stand in three forms by the variety of the three attributes, Rajas, Sattva and Tamas. The three forms are Gaurī, Lakṣmī, and Sarasvatī.

तत्र गच्छत यूयं वै तासामंतिक आदरात्॥ मदाज्ञया प्रसन्नास्ता विधास्यंते तदीप्सितम् ॥३५॥
tatra gacchata yUyaM vai tAsAmaMtika AdarAt॥ madAjJayA prasannAstA vidhAsyaMte tadIpsitam ॥35॥
Hence you go to them respectfully at my bidding. If they are pleased they will fulfil your desire.

sanatkumAra uvAca॥ zRNvatAmiti tAM vAcamaMtarddhAnamagAnmahaH ॥ devAnAM vismayotphullanetrANAM tattadA mune॥36॥
Sanatkumāra said: Even as the gods were listening to this speech with eyes gaping with wonder, the refulgence vanished.

ततस्सवेंऽपि ते देवाः श्रुत्वा तद्वाक्यमादरात्॥ गौरीं लक्ष्मीं सुरां चैव नेमुस्तद्वाक्यचोदिताः॥३७॥
tatassaveM'pi te devAH zrutvA tadvAkyamAdarAt॥ gaurIM lakSmIM surAM caiva nemustadvAkyacoditAH॥37॥
On hearing the speech, the gods, urged by it bowed respectfully to Gaurī, Lakṣmī and Sarasvatī.

तुष्टुवुश्च महाभक्त्या देवीस्तास्सकलास्सुराः॥ नानाविधाभिर्वाग्भिस्ते ब्रह्माद्या नतमस्तकाः ॥३८॥
tuSTuvuzca mahAbhaktyA devIstAssakalAssurAH॥ nAnAvidhAbhirvAgbhiste brahmAdyA natamastakAH ॥38॥
Brahmā and other gods eulogised the goddesses with various speeches and bowed their heads.

ततोऽरं व्यास देव्यस्ता आविर्भूताश्च तत्पुरः ॥ महाद्भुतैस्स्वतेजोभिर्भासयंत्यो दिगंतरम् ॥३९॥
tato'raM vyAsa devyastA AvirbhUtAzca tatpuraH ॥ mahAdbhutaissvatejobhirbhAsayaMtyo digaMtaram ॥39॥
Then the goddesses appeared in front of them, suddenly, O Vyasa, illuminating the quarters with their wonderful brilliance.

atha tA amarA dRSTvA suprasannena cetasA॥ praNamya tuSTuvurbhaktyA svakAryaM ca nyavedayan॥2-5-26-40॥
On seeing them, the gods eulogised them with great devotion and delighted minds. They submitted what they wanted to be carried out.

tatazcaitAssurAndRSTvA praNatAnbhaktavatsalaH ॥ bIjAni pradadustebhyo vAkyamUcuzca sAdaram ॥41॥
Thus bowed and eulogised, the goddesses who are favourably disposed to the devotees, faced the gods and addressed them eagerly after giving them seeds.

devya UcuH॥ imAni tatra bIjAni viSNuryatrAvatiSThati॥ nirvapadhvaM tataH kAryaM bhavatAM siddhimeSyati ॥42॥
The goddesses said: Sow these seeds in the place where Viṣṇu is standing. Then your task will be fulfilled.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktvA tAstato devyoMtarhitA abhavanmune॥ rudraviSNuvidhInAM hi zaktayastriguNAtmikAH ॥43॥
Sanatkumāra said: O sage, after saying this, the goddesses, the Śaktis of Śiva, Viṣṇu and Brahmā, possessed of the three attributes, vanished.

tatastuSTAH surAssarve brahmAdyAzca savAsavAH ॥ tAni bIjAni saMgRhya yayuryatra hariH sthitaH॥44॥
Then Brahmā and other gods including Indra took the seeds and went to the place where Viṣṇu was standing.

vRndAcitAbhUmitale cikSipustAni te surAH॥ smRtvA tAssaMsthitAstatra zivazaktyaMzakA mune॥45॥
The gods sowed those seeds in the ground where the pyre of Vṛndā had been lit. O sage, they stayed there thinking these as parts of Śiva’s Śakti.

nikSiptebhyazca bIjebhyo vanaspatyastrayo'bhavan॥ dhAtrI ca mAlatI caiva tulasI ca munIzvara ॥ 46 ॥
Out of the seeds sown, O great sage, three plants shot up—the Myrobalan, the Jasmine and the holy basil.

dhAtryudbhavA smRtA dhAtrI mAbhavA mAlatI smRtA ॥ gaurIbhavA ca tulasI tamassattvarajoguNAH ॥47॥
The Myrobalan is born of the creator’s Śakti, the jasmine of Lakṣmī and holy basil of Gaurī, born of the attributes Tamas, Sattva and Rajas.

viSNurvanaspatIrdRSTvA tadA strIrUpiNIrmune ॥ udatiSThattadA tAsu rAgAtizayavibhramAt ॥ 48 ॥
O sage, on seeing the plants in the forms of ladies Viṣṇu stood up with excitement of infatuation over them.

dRSTvA sa yAcate mohAtkAmAsaktena cetasA ॥ taM cApi tulasI dhAtrI rAgeNaivAvalokatAm ॥ 49 ॥
On seeing them he was deluded and his mind became overwhelmed by lust. The two plants—the holy basil and Myrobalan looked at him lovingly.

yacca bIjaM purA lakSmyA mAyayaiva samarpitam ॥ tasmAttadudbhavA nArI tasminnIrSyAparAbhavat॥2-5-26-50॥
The womanlike plant born out of the seed by the Śakti of Lakṣmī became jealous of him.

अतस्सा बर्बरीत्याख्यामवापातीव गर्हिताम् ॥ धात्रीतुलस्यौ तद्रागात्तस्य प्रीतिप्रदे सदा ॥५१॥
atassA barbarItyAkhyAmavApAtIva garhitAm ॥ dhAtrItulasyau tadrAgAttasya prItiprade sadA ॥51॥
Hence the plant came to be called Varvarī(a kind of wild basil) and was despised by all. The Dhātrī and the Tulasī are always pleasing to him due to their love and affection.

ततो विस्मृतदुःखोऽसौ विष्णुस्ताभ्यां सहैव तु ॥ वैकुंठमगमत्तुष्टस्सर्वदेवैर्नमस्कृतः ॥ ५२॥
tato vismRtaduHkho'sau viSNustAbhyAM sahaiva tu ॥ vaikuMThamagamattuSTassarvadevairnamaskRtaH ॥ 52॥
Then Viṣṇu forgot his sorrow. Accompanied by them he went to Vaikuṇṭha fully satisfied. He was bowed to by all the gods.

कार्तिके मासि विप्रेन्द्र धात्री च तुलसी सदा ॥ सर्वदेवप्रियाज्ञेया विष्णोश्चैव विशेषतः ॥५३॥
kArtike mAsi viprendra dhAtrI ca tulasI sadA ॥ sarvadevapriyAjJeyA viSNozcaiva vizeSataH ॥53॥
O great brahmin, myrobolan and the holy basil shall be understood as the favourites of gods in the month of Kārttika, especially of Viṣṇu.

तत्रापि तुलसी धन्यातीव श्रेष्ठा महामुने ॥ त्यक्त्वा गणेशं सर्वेषां प्रीतिदा सर्वकामदा ॥५४॥
tatrApi tulasI dhanyAtIva zreSThA mahAmune ॥ tyaktvA gaNezaM sarveSAM prItidA sarvakAmadA ॥54॥
There too, O great sage, the holy basil is the most blessed and the most excellent. Except Gaṇeśa it delights every deity and bestows all desires.

vaikuNThasthaM hariM dRSTvA brahmendrAdyAzca te'marAH॥ natvA stutvA mahAviSNuM svasvadhAmAni vai yayuH ॥55॥
On seeing Viṣṇu settled again in Vaikuṇṭha, Brahmā, Indra and other gods bowed to and eulogised him and then left for their respective abodes.

vaikuNTho'pi svalokastho bhraSTamohassubodhavAn॥ sukhI cAbhUnmunizreSTha pUrvavatsaMsmaraJchivam ॥56॥
O excellent sage, Viṣṇu too, settled in his own world, freed from delusion and enlightened, became happy remembering Śiva as before.

इत्याख्यानमघोघघ्नं सर्वकामप्रदं नृणाम् ॥ सर्व कामविकारघ्नं सर्वविज्ञानवर्द्धनम्॥५७॥
ityAkhyAnamaghoghaghnaM sarvakAmapradaM nRNAm ॥ sarva kAmavikAraghnaM sarvavijJAnavarddhanam॥57॥
This is the narrative that destroys sins, bestows desires to all men. It increases perfect knowledge and quells all aberrations of base lust.

य इदं हि पठेन्नित्यं पाठयेद्वापि भक्तिमन्॥ शृणुयाच्छ्रावयेद्वापि स याति परमां गतिम् ॥५८॥
ya idaM hi paThennityaM pAThayedvApi bhaktiman॥ zRNuyAcchrAvayedvApi sa yAti paramAM gatim ॥58॥
He who reads or teaches this every day, he who hears or narrates this with devotion attains the greatest goal.

पठित्वा य इदं धीमानाख्यानं परमोत्तमम्॥ संग्रामं प्रविशेद्वीरो विजयी स्यान्न संशयः॥५९॥
paThitvA ya idaM dhImAnAkhyAnaM paramottamam॥ saMgrAmaM pravizedvIro vijayI syAnna saMzayaH॥59॥
The intelligent man who reads this most excellent narrative and goes to war will certainly be victorious. There is no doubt about it.

विप्राणां ब्रह्मविद्यादं सत्रियाणां जयप्रदम्॥ वैश्यानां सर्वधनदं शूद्राणां सुखदं त्विदम्॥2-5-26-६०॥
viprANAM brahmavidyAdaM satriyANAM jayapradam॥ vaizyAnAM sarvadhanadaM zUdrANAM sukhadaM tvidam॥2-5-26-60॥
This yields the knowledge of Vedas to the brahmins, victory to the Kṣatriyas, wealth to the Vaiśyas and happiness to the Śūdras.

शंभुभक्तिप्रदं व्यास सर्वेषां पापनाशनम्॥ इहलोके परत्रापि सदा सद्गतिदायकम्॥६१॥
zaMbhubhaktipradaM vyAsa sarveSAM pApanAzanam॥ ihaloke paratrApi sadA sadgatidAyakam॥61॥
O Vyāsa, it confers devotion to Śiva, it destroys the sins of all persons, it bestows the good goal here and hereafter.
