vyAsa uvAca ॥ sanatkumAra sarvajJa nArade hi gate divi ॥ daityarAT kimakArSItsa tanme vada suvistarAt ॥ 1 ॥
Vyāsa said: O omniscient Sanatkumāra, what did the king of Daityas do after the departure of Nārada to heaven? Please narrate to me in detail.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ tamAmaMtrya gate daityaM nArade divi daityarAT ॥ tadrUpazravaNAdAsIdanaMgajvarapIDitaH ॥2॥
Sanatkumāra said: When Nārada departed to heaven after taking leave of the Daitya, the king of Daityas who had heard of the exquisite beauty of Pārvatī became harassed with pangs of love.

The deluded Daitya, Jalandhara, who had lost clear thinking, being swayed by Time (the annihilator) called his messenger Rāhu.

AgataM taM samAlokya kAmAkrAMtamanAssa hi ॥ susaMbodhya samAcaSTa siMdhuputro jalaMdharaH ॥4॥
The infatuated son of the ocean, Jalandhara, addressed him politely with these words.

jalaMdhara uvAca ॥ bhobho dUtavarazreSTha sarvakAryaprasAdhaka ॥ saiMhikeya mahAprAjJa kailAsaM gaccha parvatam ॥ 5 ॥
Jalandhara said: O Rāhu of great intellect, most excellent of my emissaries, go to the mountain Kailāsa, O accomplisher of all activities.

tatrAsti yogI zaMbhvAkhya stapasvI ca jaTAdharaH ॥ bhasmabhUSitasarvAGgo virakto vijitendriyaH॥5॥
A sage and a Yogin named Śiva lives there. He has matted locks of hair. He is detached. He has controlled his senses. His body is smeared with ashes.

तत्र गत्वेति वक्तव्यं योगिनं दूत शंकरम् ॥ जटाधरं विरक्तं तं निर्भयेन हृदा त्वया ॥ ७ ॥
tatra gatveti vaktavyaM yoginaM dUta zaMkaram ॥ jaTAdharaM viraktaM taM nirbhayena hRdA tvayA ॥ 7 ॥
O messenger, you shall go there and tell the detached Yogin Śiva with matted locks of hair, fearlessly.

he yogiMste dayAsindho jAyAratnena kiM bhavet ॥ bhUtapretapizAcAdisevitena vanaukasA ॥ 8 ॥
O Yogin, ocean of mercy, of what avail is an exquisitely beautiful wife to you who stay in the jungle attended by ghosts, goblins, spirits and other beings?

mannAthe bhuvane yoginnocitA gatirIdRzI ॥ jAyAratnamatastvaM me dehi ratnabhuje nijam ॥9॥
O Yogin, this state of affairs is no good in a world with me as the Ruler. Hence you give up your wife, the most excellent lady, to me, the enjoyer of all excellent things.

yAniyAni suratnAni trailokye tAni saMti me ॥ madadhInaM jagatsarvaM viddhi tvaM sacarAcaram ॥2-5-19-10॥
Know that the whole universe including the mobile and immobile beings is under my suzerainty. All the excellent things of the three worlds have come into my possession.

I have forcibly seized the most excellent elephant of Indra, the most excellent horse, Uccaiḥśravas and the celestial tree pārijāta.

vimAnaM haMsasaMyuktamaMgaNe mama tiSThati ॥ ratnabhUtaM mahAdivyamuttamaM vedhasodbhutam ॥ 12 ॥
The wonderfully excellent and the most divine aerial chariot fitted with the swan, belonging to Brahmā is now standing in my court-yard.

महापद्मादिकं दिव्यं निधिरत्नं स्वदस्य च ॥ छत्रं मे वारुणं गेहे कांचनस्रावि तिष्ठति ॥१३॥
mahApadmAdikaM divyaM nidhiratnaM svadasya ca ॥ chatraM me vAruNaM gehe kAMcanasrAvi tiSThati ॥13॥
The divine and excellent treasure Mahāpadma etc. of Kubera is in my custody. The umbrella of Varuṇa stands in my house shedding its golden brilliance.

kiJjalkinI mahAmAlA sarvadA'mlAnapaMkajA ॥ matpitussA mamaivAsti pAzazca kaMpatestathA ॥14॥
The great garland of never-fading lotuses of fine filaments belonging to my father is as good as mine. The noose of Varuṇa lord of waters is also mine.

मृत्योरुत्क्रांतिदा शक्तिर्मया नीता बलाद्वरा॥ ददौ मह्यं शुचिर्दिव्ये शुचिशौचे च वाससी ॥।१५॥
mRtyorutkrAMtidA zaktirmayA nItA balAdvarA॥ dadau mahyaM zucirdivye zucizauce ca vAsasI ॥।15॥
The excellent Javelin of Mṛtyu has been seized by me with force. The god of fire has surrendered to me two clothes purified in fire.

एवं योगीन्द्र रत्नानि सर्वाणि विलसंति मे ॥ अतस्त्वमपि मे देहि स्वस्त्रीरत्नं जटाधर ॥ १६ ॥
evaM yogIndra ratnAni sarvANi vilasaMti me ॥ atastvamapi me dehi svastrIratnaM jaTAdhara ॥ 16 ॥
hus, O great Yogin, all excellent things shine in my possession. Hence O ascetic (wearing matted hair) you too surrender your wife the most excellent of all ladies to me.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य नन्दिना स प्रवेशितः॥ जगामोग्रसभां राहुर्विस्मयोद्भुतलोचनः॥१७॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ iti zrutvA vacastasya nandinA sa pravezitaH॥ jagAmograsabhAM rAhurvismayodbhutalocanaH॥17॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing his words Rāhu went to Kailāsa and was allowed to enter by Nandin. With surprise and mystery manifest in his eyes, he went to the assembly chamber of Śiva.

तत्र गत्वा शिवं साक्षाद्देवदेवं महाप्रभुम्॥ स्वतेजोध्वस्ततमसं भस्मलेपविराजितम्॥१८॥
tatra gatvA zivaM sAkSAddevadevaM mahAprabhum॥ svatejodhvastatamasaM bhasmalepavirAjitam॥18॥
On entering it, he saw Śiva, the lord of the gods, the great lord, quelling darkness with his refulgence, shining with ashes smeared (over his body), adorned with all Royal paraphernalia, of wonderful features, exquisite in every limb and embellished with divine ornaments.

महाराजोपचारे विलसंतं महाद्भुतम्॥ सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरं दिव्यभूषणैर्भूषितं हरम्॥१९॥
mahArAjopacAre vilasaMtaM mahAdbhutam॥ sarvAGgasundaraM divyabhUSaNairbhUSitaM haram॥19॥
Resplendent with royal offerings, wonderfully radiant, Lord Hara (Shiva), beautiful in every limb, adorned with divine ornaments.

प्रणनाम च तं गर्वात्तत्तेजः क्रांतविग्रहः॥ निकटं गतवाञ्छंभोस्स दूतो राहुसंज्ञकः॥2-5-19-२०॥
praNanAma ca taM garvAttattejaH krAMtavigrahaH॥ nikaTaM gatavAJchaMbhossa dUto rAhusaMjJakaH॥2-5-19-20॥
The emissary named Rāhu bowed to Śiva. His haughtiness subsided by the brilliance of his body. He went near Śiva.

अथो तदग्र आसीनो वक्तुकामो हि सैंहिकः॥ त्र्यंबकं स तदा संज्ञाप्रेरितो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
atho tadagra AsIno vaktukAmo hi saiMhikaH॥ tryaMbakaM sa tadA saMjJAprerito vAkyamabravIt ॥21॥
Rāhu was desirous of speaking to him. He sat in front of Śiva. Urged by his gesture Rāhu spoke to the three-eyed god Śiva.

दैत्यपन्नगसेव्यस्य त्रैलोक्याधिपतेस्सदा ॥ दूतोऽहं प्रेषितस्तेन त्वत्सकाशमिहागतः ॥२२॥
daityapannagasevyasya trailokyAdhipatessadA ॥ dUto'haM preSitastena tvatsakAzamihAgataH ॥22॥
Rāhu said: I am the messenger of the lord of the three worlds, worthy of being served for ever by Daityas and serpents. I have come here to you on being sent by him.

॥ राहुरुवाच ॥ जलंधरोब्धितनयस्सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरः ॥ त्रैलोक्यस्येश्वरस्सोथाभवत्सर्वाधिनायकः ॥२३॥
॥ rAhuruvAca ॥ jalaMdharobdhitanayassarvadaityajanezvaraH ॥ trailokyasyezvarassothAbhavatsarvAdhinAyakaH ॥23॥
The son of the ocean Jalandhara became the lord of all Daityas and now he is the lord of the three worlds. He is the emperor of all.

स दैत्यराजो बलवान्देवानामंतकोपमः ॥ योगिनं त्वां समुद्दिश्य स यदाह शृणुष्व तत् ॥ २४ ॥
sa daityarAjo balavAndevAnAmaMtakopamaH ॥ yoginaM tvAM samuddizya sa yadAha zRNuSva tat ॥ 24 ॥
That powerful king of Daityas is like the god of death to the gods. Listen to what he says addressing you the Yogin.

महादिव्यप्रभावस्य तस्य दैत्यपतेः प्रभोः ॥ सर्वरत्नेश्वरस्य त्वमाज्ञां शृणु वृषध्वज ॥ २५ ॥
mahAdivyaprabhAvasya tasya daityapateH prabhoH ॥ sarvaratnezvarasya tvamAjJAM zRNu vRSadhvaja ॥ 25 ॥
O bull-bannered god, listen to the behest of the lord of Daityas who has divine power and who is the master of all excellent things.

zmazAnavAsino nityamasthimAlAdharasya ca ॥ digaMbarasya te bhAryA kathaM haimavatI zubham ॥26॥
How can the auspicious daughter of Himavat be a wife unto you who habitually stay in the cremation ground wearing garlands of bones and assuming the form of a naked ascetic.

अहं रत्नाधिनाथोस्मि सा च स्त्रीरत्नसंज्ञिता ॥ तस्मान्ममैव सा योग्या नैव भिक्षाशिनस्तव ॥२७॥
ahaM ratnAdhinAthosmi sA ca strIratnasaMjJitA ॥ tasmAnmamaiva sA yogyA naiva bhikSAzinastava ॥27॥
I am the possessor of all excellent things. She is the most excellent of all ladies. She deserves me better than you who live on alms.

मम वश्यास्त्रयो लोका भुंजेऽहं मखभागकान् ॥ यानि संति त्रिलोकेस्मिन्रत्नानि मम सद्मनि ॥ २८ ॥
mama vazyAstrayo lokA bhuMje'haM makhabhAgakAn ॥ yAni saMti trilokesminratnAni mama sadmani ॥ 28 ॥
The three worlds are under my control. I partake of shares in sacrifices. The excellent things of the three worlds are found in my palace.

वयं रत्नभुजस्त्वं तु योगी खलु दिगम्बरः ॥ स्वस्त्रीरत्नं देहि मह्यं राज्ञस्सुखकराः प्रजाः ॥२९॥
vayaM ratnabhujastvaM tu yogI khalu digambaraH ॥ svastrIratnaM dehi mahyaM rAjJassukhakarAH prajAH ॥29॥
We are the enjoyers of excellent things. You are a mere naked ascetic and a Yogin. Surrender your wife unto me. Subjects shall always keep their king happy.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ vadatyevaM tathA rAhau bhrUmadhyAcchUlapANinaH ॥ abhavatpuruSo raudrastIvrAzanisamasvanaH ॥ 2-5-19-30 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: When Rāhu spoke thus, a terrific being resonant like the thunder came out from the space between the eyebrows of the trident-bearing deity.

सिंहास्यप्रचलजिह्वस्सज्ज्वालनयनो महान् ॥ ऊर्द्ध्वकेशश्शुष्कतनुर्नृसिंह इव चापरः ॥ ३१ ॥
siMhAsyapracalajihvassajjvAlanayano mahAn ॥ UrddhvakezazzuSkatanurnRsiMha iva cAparaH ॥ 31 ॥
He had a leonine mouth with a moving tongue; his eyes shed fiery flames; his hair stood at its end; his body was dry and rough. He appeared to be the man-lion incarnation of Viṣṇu.

महातनुर्महाबाहुस्तालजंघो भयंकरः ॥ अभिदुद्राव वेगेन राहुं स पुरुषो द्रुतम् ॥३२॥
mahAtanurmahAbAhustAlajaMgho bhayaMkaraH ॥ abhidudrAva vegena rAhuM sa puruSo drutam ॥32॥
He was huge in size. He had long arms. His calves were as stout and huge as the palmyra tree. He was very terrible. He immediately rushed at Rāhu.

स तं खादितु मायान्तं दृष्ट्वा राहुर्भयातुरः ॥ अधावदात वेगेन बहिस्तस्य च दधार तम् ॥३३॥
sa taM khAditu mAyAntaM dRSTvA rAhurbhayAturaH ॥ adhAvadAta vegena bahistasya ca dadhAra tam ॥33॥
On seeing him rushing to devour, Rāhu was terrified. He ran out when he was caught by the terrible being.

राहुरुवाच ॥ देवदेव महेशान पाहि मां शरणा गतम् ॥ सुराऽसुरैस्सदा वन्द्यः परमैश्वर्यवान् प्रभुः ॥३४॥
rAhuruvAca ॥ devadeva mahezAna pAhi mAM zaraNA gatam ॥ surA'suraissadA vandyaH paramaizvaryavAn prabhuH ॥34॥
Rāhu said: O great lord, O lord of the gods, save me who have sought refuge in you. You are always worthy of being worshipped by the gods and Asuras. You are the lord endowed with all riches and accomplishments.

ब्राह्मणं मां महादेव खादितुं समुपागतः ॥ पुरुषोयं तवेशान सेवकोतिभयंकरः ॥ ३५ ॥
brAhmaNaM mAM mahAdeva khAdituM samupAgataH ॥ puruSoyaM tavezAna sevakotibhayaMkaraH ॥ 35 ॥
O great lord, your terrible servant has come here to swallow me, a brahmin.

एतस्माद्रक्ष देवेश शरणागतवत्सलः ॥ न खादेत यथायं मां नमस्तेऽस्तु मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ ३६ ॥
etasmAdrakSa deveza zaraNAgatavatsalaH ॥ na khAdeta yathAyaM mAM namaste'stu muhurmuhuH ॥ 36 ॥
O lord of gods, favourably disposed to your devotees, save me lest he should devour me. Obeisance be to you again and again.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ mahAdevo vacaH zrutvA brAhmaNasya tadA mune ॥ abravItsvagaNaM taM vai dInAnAthapriyaH prabhuH ॥ 37 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: O sage, on hearing the words of the brahmin, the great lord, favourite of the distressed and helpless, spoke to his Gaṇa.

महादेव उवाच ॥ प्रभुं च ब्राह्मणं दूतं राह्वाख्यं शरणागतम् ॥ शरण्या रक्षणीया हि न दण्ड्या गणसत्तम ॥३८॥
mahAdeva uvAca ॥ prabhuM ca brAhmaNaM dUtaM rAhvAkhyaM zaraNAgatam ॥ zaraNyA rakSaNIyA hi na daNDyA gaNasattama ॥38॥
The great lord said: Leave off this brahmin Rāhu, the emissary who has sought refuge. O excellent Gaṇa, those who seek shelter shall be protected, not punished.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktau girijezena sagaNaH karuNAtmanA ॥ rAhuM tatyAja sahasA brAhmaNeti zrutAkSaraH ॥ 39 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Commanded thus by the lord of Pārvatī, of sympathetic temperament, the Gaṇa set Rāhu free, immediately on hearing the word brahmin.

राहुं त्यक्त्वाम्बरे सोथ पुरुषो दीनया गिरा ॥ शिवोपकंठमागत्य महादेवं व्यजिज्ञपत् ॥ 2-5-19-४० ॥
rAhuM tyaktvAmbare sotha puruSo dInayA girA ॥ zivopakaMThamAgatya mahAdevaM vyajijJapat ॥ 2-5-19-40 ॥
After leaving off Rāhu, the gaṇa came near Śiva and pleaded to the great lord in piteous words.

The gaṇa said: O great lord, O lord of the gods, O Śiva the merciful, O deity favourable to the devotees, my prey has been taken away.

O lord, I am tormented by hunger. So I am utterly emaciated. O lord of the gods, what shall be eaten by me? Please command me, O lord.

Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of the being, the great lord of wonderful sports, eager to help his own persons, replied.

mahezvara uvAca ॥ bubhukSA yadi te'tIva kSudhA tvAM bAdhate yadi ॥ saMbhakSayAtmanazzIghraM mAMsaM tvaM hastapAdayoH ॥ 44 ॥
The great lord said: If you are badly in need of food, if hunger torments you, eat up immediately the flesh of your own hands and feet.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zivenaivamAjJaptazcakhAda puruSassvakam ॥ hastapAdodbhavaM mAMsaM zirazzeSo' bhavadyathA ॥ 45 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On being commanded thus by Śiva, the being ate up the flesh from his limbs. He was then left only with his head.

On seeing that being of terrible activities, left only with his head, the delighted Sadāśiva spoke smilingly.

ziva uvAca ॥ he mahAgaNa dhanyastvaM madAjJApratipAlakaH ॥ saMtuSTazcAsmi te'tIva karmaNAnena sattama ॥ 47 ॥
Śiva said: O great Gaṇa, you are blessed since you carried out my behest to the very letter. O excellent one, I am pleased with this action of yours.

त्वं कीर्तिमुखसंज्ञो हि भव मद्द्वारकस्सदा ॥ महागणो महावीरस्सर्वदुष्टभयंकरः ॥४८॥
tvaM kIrtimukhasaMjJo hi bhava maddvArakassadA ॥ mahAgaNo mahAvIrassarvaduSTabhayaMkaraH ॥48॥
You shall hereafter be known by the title Kīrtimukha. You shall be my door-keeper. You shall be one of my great Gaṇas, very heroic and terrible to all wicked persons.

मत्प्रियस्त्वं मदर्चायां सदा पूज्योऽहि मज्जनैः ॥ त्वदर्चां ये न कुर्वंति नैव ते मत्प्रियंकराः ॥ ४९ ॥
matpriyastvaM madarcAyAM sadA pUjyo'hi majjanaiH ॥ tvadarcAM ye na kurvaMti naiva te matpriyaMkarAH ॥ 49 ॥
You are my favourite. In the course of my worship, you too shall be worshipped always by my devotees. Those who do not worship you cannot be pleasing to me.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ iti zaMbhorvaraM prApya puruSaH prajaharSa saH ॥ tadAprabhRti deveza dvAre kIrtimukhaH sthitaH ॥2-5-19-50॥
Sanatkumāra said: With this excellent blessing from Śiva, he became delighted. From that time onwards Kīrtimukha was stationed at the entrance of the lord of the gods.

पूजनीयो विशेषेण स गणश्शिवपूजने ॥ नार्चयंतीह ये पूर्वं तेषामर्चा वृथा भवेत् ॥५१॥
pUjanIyo vizeSeNa sa gaNazzivapUjane ॥ nArcayaMtIha ye pUrvaM teSAmarcA vRthA bhavet ॥51॥
This Gaṇa shall be specially worshipped in the course of the adoration of Śiva. Those who do not worship him at the outset will find their worship in vain.
