sanatkumAra uvAca॥ evaM zAsati dharmeNa mahIM tasminmahAsure॥ babhUvurduHkhino devA bhrAtRbhAvAnmunIzvara ॥1॥
Sanatkumāra said: When the great Asura was ruling over the Earth virtuously, the gods were reduced to be mere slaves, O great sage.

The distressed gods mentally sought refuge in Śiva the benefactor, lord of gods and of everyone.

tuSTuvurvAgbhiriSTAbhirbhagavaMtaM mahezvaram ॥ nivRttaye svaduHkhasya sarvadaM bhaktavatsalam ॥ 3 ॥
They eulogised the great lord, the bestower of everything and favourably disposed to his devotees, by means of pleasant words.

AhUya sa mahAdevo bhaktAnAM sarvakAmadaH॥॥ nAradaM prerayAmAsa devakAryacikIrSayA ॥ 4 ॥
The great lord, the bestower of all desires to his devotees called Nārada and commissioned him with a desire to carry out the task of the gods.

Then the celestial sage, the wise devotee of Śiva, the goal of the good, went to the gods in the city of the Asuras at the bidding of Śiva.

On seeing the sage Nārada coming, the distressed gods, Indra and others, stood up.

After bowing to the sage, Indra and other gods, their anxiety apparently manifest in their faces, offered a seat to Nārada.

After bowing to Nārada the great sage who sat comfortably, the distressed gods, Indra and others spoke to him again.

devA UcuH ॥ bhobho munivarazreSTha duHkhaM zRNu kRpAkara ॥ zrutvA tannAzaya kSipraM prabhustvaM zaMkarapriyaH ॥9॥
The gods said: O excellent sage, listen to our misery. O merciful one, after listening to it, destroy it quickly. You are powerful and the favourite of Śiva.

jalaMdhareNa daityena surA vidrAvitA bhRzam॥ svasthAnAdbhartRbhAvAcca duHkhitA vayamAkulAH ॥2-5-18-10॥
The gods have been routed by the Asura Jalandhara from their abodes and positions of controlling authority. Hence we are miserable and distressed.

svasthAnAduSNarazmizca candro nissAritastathA ॥ vahnizca dharmarAjazca lokapAlAstathetare ॥ 11 ॥
The hot-rayed sun and the moon have been ousted from their positions. The fire-god and the god of death and guardians of the quarters have been expelled.

subaliSThena vai tena sarve devAH prapIDitAH ॥ duHkhaM prAptA vayaM cAtizaraNaM tvAM samAgatAH ॥12॥
The gods have been harassed by that powerful Asura. We who have been subjected to great grief now seek refuge in you.

saMgrAme sa hRSIkezaM svavazaM kRtavAn balI ॥ jalaMdharo mahAdaityaH sarvAmaravimardakaH ॥ 13 ॥
The great Asura Jalandhara who has suppressed the gods and who is very powerful has made Viṣṇu subservient to him in the battle.

तस्य वश्यो वराधीनोऽवात्सीत्तत्सदने हरिः ॥ सलक्ष्म्या सहितो विष्णुर्यो नस्सर्वार्थसाधकः ॥ १४ ॥
tasya vazyo varAdhIno'vAtsIttatsadane hariH ॥ salakSmyA sahito viSNuryo nassarvArthasAdhakaH ॥ 14 ॥
Becoming subservient because of helplessness occa. sioned by the boon granted to him, Viṣṇu who carried out our tasks has now begun to stay in his palace along with Lakṣmī.

जलंधरविनाशाय यत्नं कुरु महामते ॥ त्वं नो दैववशात्प्राप्तस्सदा सर्वार्थसाधकः ॥ १५ ॥
jalaMdharavinAzAya yatnaM kuru mahAmate ॥ tvaM no daivavazAtprAptassadA sarvArthasAdhakaH ॥ 15 ॥
O intelligent one, please exert yourself for the destruction of Jalandhara. You have fortunately come to us and you have always been the person who can achieve everything for us.

Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of the gods, the great sage Nārada, the merciful, consoled them and said.

nArada uvAca ॥ jAne'haM vai surA yUyaM daityarAjaparAjitAH॥ duHkha prAptAH pIDitAzca sthAnAnnissAritAH khaluH ॥ 17 ॥
Nārada said: O gods, I know that you have been defeated by the king of Asuras, that you are miserable and harassed and have been deposed.

स्वशक्त्या भवतां स्वार्थं करिष्ये नात्र संशयः॥ अनुकूलोऽहमिव वो दुःखं प्राप्ता यतो ऽमराः ॥१८॥
svazaktyA bhavatAM svArthaM kariSye nAtra saMzayaH॥ anukUlo'hamiva vo duHkhaM prAptA yato 'marAH ॥18॥
There is no doubt in this that I shall carry out your task according to my ability. O gods, since you are in misery I shall be favourable to you.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ evamuktvA munizreSTha draSTuM dAnavavallabham ॥ AzvAsya sakalAndevAJjalaMdharasabhAM yayau ॥19॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying so and consoling the gods, the excellent sage went to the assembly chamber of Jalandhara to see the favourite Asura.

अथागतं मुनिश्रेष्ठं दृष्ट्वा देवो जलंधरः ॥ उत्थाय परया भक्त्या ददौ श्रेष्ठासनं वरम् ॥ 2-5-18-२० ॥
athAgataM munizreSThaM dRSTvA devo jalaMdharaH ॥ utthAya parayA bhaktyA dadau zreSThAsanaM varam ॥ 2-5-18-20 ॥
On seeing the excellent sage, the king Jalandhara stood up and offered him a splendid seat with great devotion.

sa taM saMpUjya vidhivaddAnavendro'ti vismitaH ॥ suprahasya tadA vAkyaM jagAda munisattamam ॥21॥
After worshipping him duly the surprised king of the Asuras laughed loudly and spoke to the excellent sage.

जलंधर उवाच ॥ कुत आगम्यते ब्रह्मन्किं च दृष्टं त्वया क्वचित्॥ यदर्थमिह आयातस्तदाज्ञापय मां मुने ॥ २२ ॥
jalaMdhara uvAca ॥ kuta Agamyate brahmankiM ca dRSTaM tvayA kvacit॥ yadarthamiha AyAtastadAjJApaya mAM mune ॥ 22 ॥
Jalandhara said: O brahmin, whence do you come from? What did you see here? O sage, what is the aim of your present visit here?

Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of king Jalandhara the delighted great sage Nārada replied to him.

nArada uvAca ॥ sarvadAnavadaityendra jalaMdhara mahAmate ॥ dhanyastvaM sarvalokeza ratnabhoktA tvameva hi ॥24॥
Nārada said: O Jalandhara of great intellect, O lord of Dānavas and Daityas, O lord of all the worlds, you are blessed. You alone are the enjoyer of all jewels.

madAgamanahetuM vai zRNu daityendrasattama ॥ yadarthamiha cAyAtastvahaM vakSyekhilaM hi tat ॥25॥
O excellent king of Daityas, listen to the purpose for which I have come here. I shall explain it to you.

gataH kailAsazikharaM daityendrAhaM yadRcchayA ॥ yojanAyutavistIrNaM kalpadrumamahAvanam ॥ 26 ॥
O lord of Daityas, I had been to the summit of Kailāsa casually. It is ten thousand Yojanas wide. It has a grove of Kalpa trees.

कामधेनुशताकीर्णं चिंतामणिसुदीपितम् ॥ सर्वरुक्ममयं दिव्यं सर्वत्राद्भुतशोभितम् ॥ २७ ॥
kAmadhenuzatAkIrNaM ciMtAmaNisudIpitam ॥ sarvarukmamayaM divyaM sarvatrAdbhutazobhitam ॥ 27 ॥
Hundreds of Kāmadhenus are found there. It is illuminated by Cintāmaṇi gems. It abounds in gold. It is divine and wonderfully brilliant.

तत्रोमया सहासीनं दृष्टवानस्मि शंकरम् ॥ सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरं गौरं त्रिनेत्रं चन्द्रशेखरम् ॥२८॥
tatromayA sahAsInaM dRSTavAnasmi zaMkaram ॥ sarvAGgasundaraM gauraM trinetraM candrazekharam ॥28॥
There I saw Śiva seated along with Pārvatī. He is fair-complexioned and exquisitely handsome. He has three eyes and the moon for his crest.

taM dRSTvA mahadAzcaryaM vitarko me'bhavattadA॥ kvApIdRzI bhavedvRddhistrailokye vA na veti ca॥29॥
On seeing this wonderfully great thing, a doubt arose in my mind. Can there be anywhere in the three worlds such a splendour as this?

tAvattavApi daityendra samRddhissaMsmRtA mayA॥ tadvilokanakAmo'haM tvatsAMnidhyamihA gataH ॥2-5-18-30॥
O lord of Daityas then the idea of your prosperity struck into my mind. Now I have come to you to see it personally.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ iti nAradataH zrutvA sa daityendro jalaMdharaH ॥ svasamRddhiM samagrAM vai darzayAmAsa sAdaram ॥31॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of Nārada the lord of Daityas Jalandhara showed all his glory to Nārada.

dRSTvA sa nArado jJAnI devakAryasusAdhakaH ॥ prabhupreraNayA prAha daityendraM taM jalaMdharam ॥32॥
On seeing it, the wise Nārada, eager to realise the interests of the gods, spoke to the king of Daityas, Jalandhara, induced by the lord.

nArad uvAca ॥ tavAsti susamRddhirhi varavIra khilAdhunA ॥ trailokyasya patistvaM hi citraM kiM cAtra saMbhavam ॥ 33 ॥
Nārada said: O foremost among heroes, you have everything conducive to prosperity. You are the lord of the three worlds. What wonder that you possess this wealth.

maNayo ratnapuMjAzca gajAdyAzca samRddhayaH ॥ te gRhe'dya vibhAMtIha yAni ratnAni tAnyapi ॥34॥
Big jewels, heaps of gems, elephants and other adjuncts to prosperity flourish in your mansion. Whatever valuable thing there is in the worlds finds a place here.

गजरत्नं त्वयानीतं शक्रस्यैरावतस्तथा ॥ अश्वरत्नं महावीर सूर्यस्योच्चैःश्रवा हयः ॥ ३५॥
gajaratnaM tvayAnItaM zakrasyairAvatastathA ॥ azvaratnaM mahAvIra sUryasyoccaiHzravA hayaH ॥ 35॥
O great hero, the most excellent of all elephants, Airāvata of lndra has been brought by you. The most excellent of all horses, Uccaiḥśravas of the sun has been brought by you.

कल्पवृक्षस्त्वयानीतो निधयो धनदस्य च ॥ हंसयुक्तविमानं च त्वयानीतं हि वेधसः ॥ ३६ ॥
kalpavRkSastvayAnIto nidhayo dhanadasya ca ॥ haMsayuktavimAnaM ca tvayAnItaM hi vedhasaH ॥ 36 ॥
The celestial Kalpa tree has been brought by you; the treasures of Kubera and the aerial chariot of Brahmā yoked to swan have been brought by you.

ityevaM vararatnAni divi pRthvyAM rasAtale ॥ yAni daityendra te bhAMti gRhe tAni samastataH ॥ 37 ॥
Thus all excellent things available in heaven, earth and nether worlds, O great Daitya, flourish in your mansion in their entirety.

tvatsamRddhimimAM pazyansampUrNAM vividhAmaham ॥ prasanno'smi mahAvIra gajAzvAdisuzobhitAm ॥ 38 ॥
O great hero, I am highly delighted on seeing your great affluence consisting of diverse objects—elephant horse etc.

जायारत्नं महाश्रेष्ठं जलंधर न ते गृहे ॥ तदानेतुं विशेषेण स्त्रीरत्नं वै त्वमर्हसि ॥३९॥
jAyAratnaM mahAzreSThaM jalaMdhara na te gRhe ॥ tadAnetuM vizeSeNa strIratnaM vai tvamarhasi ॥39॥
But O Jalandhara, your mansion is deficient in the most excellent of all ladies. You deserve to bring that.

यस्य गेहे सुरत्नानि सर्वाणि हि जलंधर ॥ जायारत्नं न चेत्तानि न शोभंते वृथा ध्रुवम् ॥ 2-5-18-४० ॥
yasya gehe suratnAni sarvANi hi jalaMdhara ॥ jAyAratnaM na cettAni na zobhaMte vRthA dhruvam ॥ 2-5-18-40 ॥
O Jalandhara, one who possesses all excellent things but does not possess the most excellent of women does not shine. His life is rendered waste.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्येवं वचनं श्रुत्वा नारदस्य महात्मनः ॥ उवाच दैत्यराजो हि मदनाकुलमानसः ॥४१॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityevaM vacanaM zrutvA nAradasya mahAtmanaH ॥ uvAca daityarAjo hi madanAkulamAnasaH ॥41॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of Nārada the noble soul, the king of Daityas, with his mind excited by passion, spoke as follows:

जलंधर उवाच ॥ भो भो नारद देवर्षे नमस्तेस्तु महाप्रभो ॥ जायारत्नवरं कुत्र वर्तते तद्वदाधुना ॥४२॥
jalaMdhara uvAca ॥ bho bho nArada devarSe namastestu mahAprabho ॥ jAyAratnavaraM kutra vartate tadvadAdhunA ॥42॥
Jalandhara said: O celestial sage, O Nārada, obeisance be to you, O holy lord. Where is this most excellent of all ladies? Please tell me now.

ब्रह्मांडे यत्र कुत्रापि तद्रत्नं यदि वर्त्तते ॥ तदानेष्ये ततो ब्रह्मन्सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः ॥४३॥
brahmAMDe yatra kutrApi tadratnaM yadi varttate ॥ tadAneSye tato brahmansatyaM satyaM na saMzayaH ॥43॥
Wherever it may be in the whole of this universe, if such a lady exists anywhere, I will bring her here. Truth, it is certainly the truth.

नारद उवाच॥ कैलासे ह्यतिरम्ये च वर्वद्धिं सुसमाकुले ॥ योगिरूपधरश्शंभुरस्ति तत्र दिगम्बरः॥४४॥
nArada uvAca॥ kailAse hyatiramye ca varvaddhiM susamAkule ॥ yogirUpadharazzaMbhurasti tatra digambaraH॥44॥
Nārada said: Kailāsa is very beautiful and it possesses all sorts of things conducive to prosperity. Śiva lives there assuming the form of a naked Yogin.

तस्य भार्या सुरम्या हि सर्वलक्षणलक्षिता॥ सर्वांगसुन्दरी नाम्ना पार्वतीति मनोहरा॥४५॥
tasya bhAryA suramyA hi sarvalakSaNalakSitA॥ sarvAMgasundarI nAmnA pArvatIti manoharA॥45॥
His wife Pārvatī is exquisitely beautiful in every limb. She is charming and has all the characteristics of a beautiful lady.

तदीदृशं रूपमनन्यसंगतं दृष्टं न कुत्रापि कुतूहलाढ्यम् ॥ अत्यद्भुतं मोहनकृत्सुयोगिनां सुदर्शनीयं परमर्द्धिकारि ॥४६॥
tadIdRzaM rUpamananyasaMgataM dRSTaM na kutrApi kutUhalADhyam ॥ atyadbhutaM mohanakRtsuyoginAM sudarzanIyaM paramarddhikAri ॥46॥
Such an exquisite beauteous form has never been seen anywhere. It incites the enthusiasm of everybody. It is highly wonderful. It fascinates even the Yogins. It is worthy of being seen. It is conducive to great prosperity.

स्वचित्ते कल्पयाम्यद्य शिवादन्यस्समृद्धिवान् ॥ जायारत्नान्विताद्वीर त्रिलोक्या न जलंधर ॥४७॥
svacitte kalpayAmyadya zivAdanyassamRddhivAn ॥ jAyAratnAnvitAdvIra trilokyA na jalaMdhara ॥47॥
This occurs to my mind, O valiant Jalandhara that there is none more prosperous in the three worlds than Śiva who possesses the most excellent of all ladies.

यस्या लावण्यजलधौ निमग्नश्चतुराननः ॥ स्वधैर्य्यं मुमुचे पूर्वं तया कान्योपमीयते ॥ ४८ ॥
yasyA lAvaNyajaladhau nimagnazcaturAnanaH ॥ svadhairyyaM mumuce pUrvaM tayA kAnyopamIyate ॥ 48 ॥
Even the four-facedlord Brahmā, immersed in her ocean of beauty, lost his mental steadiness formerly. Who can be compared to such a beautiful lady?

गतरागोऽपि हि यया मदनारिस्स्वलीलया ॥ निजतंत्रोऽपि यतस्स स्वात्म वशगः कृतः ॥ ४९ ॥
gatarAgo'pi hi yayA madanArissvalIlayA ॥ nijataMtro'pi yatassa svAtma vazagaH kRtaH ॥ 49 ॥
Even Śiva reputed to be free from infatuation has been won over by her womanly sports. Śiva who is independent has been subjugated by her.

यथा स्त्रीरत्नसंभोक्तुस्समृद्धिस्तस्य साभवत् ॥ तथा न तव दैत्येन्द्र सर्वरत्नाधिपस्य च ॥ 2-5-18-५० ॥
yathA strIratnasaMbhoktussamRddhistasya sAbhavat ॥ tathA na tava daityendra sarvaratnAdhipasya ca ॥ 2-5-18-50 ॥
The prosperity that he enjoys inasmuch as he indulges in dalliance with the most excellent of all ladies has not come to you O lord of Daityas though you are the master of excellent gems and jewels.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा स तु देवर्षिर्नारदो लोकविश्रुतः॥ ययौ विहायसा देवोपकारकरणोद्यतः ॥५१॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktvA sa tu devarSirnArado lokavizrutaH॥ yayau vihAyasA devopakArakaraNodyataH ॥51॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying this, the world-renowned celestial sage, Nārada, pursuing his attempt to help the gods departed from there by the aerial path.
