॥ sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ punardaityaM samAyAMtaM dRSTvA devAssavAsavAH ॥ bhayAtprakaMpitAssarve sahaivAdudruvurdrutam ॥1॥
Sanatkumāra said: On seeing the Asura coming again, the gods including Indra trembled with fear. They fled together.

With Brahmā at the head they went to Vaikuṇṭha. All of them including Prajāpati eulogised Viṣṇu after bowing down to him.

The gods said: O Hṛṣīkeśa of long arms, O lord, O slayer of Madhu, O lord of gods, Obeisance to you, O destroyer of all Asuras.

O Viṣṇu, of the form of fishwho redeemed the Vedas through king Satyavrata, obeisance to you who sport about in the ocean of Dissolution.

Obeisance to you of the form of Tortoise who bore the mountain Mandara of the gods who were attempting to churn the ocean.

Obeisance to you O holy lord, of the form of Boar. Obeisance to you who hold the earth, the support of people. Obeisance to Viṣṇu.

Obeisance to you, the Dwarf. Obeisance to Viṣṇu the younger brother of Indra, the lord who deceived the king of Asuras in the guise of a Brahmin.

Obeisance to Paraśurāma who exterminated the Kṣattriyas, who rendered help to your mother. Obeisance to you who are angry and inimical to the evil beings.

Obeisance to Rama who delighted the worlds and who set the limits of decent behaviour. Obeisance to you the destroyer of Rāvaṇa and the lord of Sītā.

Obeisance to you of the form of Kalki; the destroyer of outcastes Obeisance to him of infinite power and who establishes good virtue.

Obeisance to you of the form of Kapila of great soul and who expounded the doctrines of Sāṃkhya and Yoga to Devahūtī; O lord, obeisance to you the preceptor of Sāṃkhya.

Obeisance to great yogin and saint who expounds the great wisdom. Obeisance to the creator of the form of knowledge whereby the soul is delighted.

vedavyAsAya vedAnAM vibhAgaM kurvate namaH ॥ hitAya sarvalokAnAM purANaracanAya ca ॥ 15 ॥
Obeisance to you of the form of Vedavyāsa who classified the Vedas and who wrote the Purāṇas for the welfare of the worlds.

evaM matsyAditanubhirbhaktakAryodyatAya te ॥ sargasthitidhvaMsakartre namaste brahmaNe prabho ॥16॥
Obeisance to you who are ready to perform the task of the devotees through incarnations of Fish etc. O lord, obeisance to you of the form of Brahman, the cause of creation, sustenance and annihilation.

आर्तिहंत्रे स्वदासानां सुखदाय शुभाय च ॥ पीताम्बराय हरये तार्क्ष्ययानाय ते नमः॥ सर्वक्रियायैककर्त्रे शरण्याय नमोनमः ॥१७॥
ArtihaMtre svadAsAnAM sukhadAya zubhAya ca ॥ pItAmbarAya haraye tArkSyayAnAya te namaH॥ sarvakriyAyaikakartre zaraNyAya namonamaH ॥17॥
Obeisance to the destroyer of the distress of your servants; the bestower of auspicious happiness. Obeisance to you wearing yellow robes, having Garuḍa for your vehicle. Obeisance to the performer of all rites. Obeisance to the sole doer. Obeisance to the one worthy of being resorted to.

दैत्यसंतापितामर्त्य दुःखादिध्वंसवज्रक ॥ शेषतल्पशयायार्कचन्द्रनेत्राय ते नमः ॥१८॥
daityasaMtApitAmartya duHkhAdidhvaMsavajraka ॥ zeSatalpazayAyArkacandranetrAya te namaH ॥18॥
O thunderbolt for the destruction of misery etc. of the gods harassed by the Asuras. Obeisance to you lying on the Serpent-bed. Obeisance to the one who has sun and the moon for his eyes.

कृपासिन्धो रमानाथ पाहि नश्शरणागतान् ॥ जलंधरेण देवाश्च स्वर्गात्सर्वे निराकृताः ॥१९॥
kRpAsindho ramAnAtha pAhi nazzaraNAgatAn ॥ jalaMdhareNa devAzca svargAtsarve nirAkRtAH ॥19॥
O lord of Lakṣmī, O ocean of mercy, save us who have sought refuge in you. All the gods have been driven out of heaven by Jalandhara.

सूर्यो निस्सारितः स्थानाच्चन्द्रो वह्निस्तथैव च ॥ पातालान्नागराजश्च धर्मराजो निराकृतः ॥ 2-5-16-२० ॥
sUryo nissAritaH sthAnAccandro vahnistathaiva ca ॥ pAtAlAnnAgarAjazca dharmarAjo nirAkRtaH ॥ 2-5-16-20 ॥
The sun has been dislodged from his post. Similarly the moon and the fire too have been removed. The Serpent-king has been removed from Pātāla and Dharmarāja has been dispossessed.

विचरंति यथा मर्त्याश्शोभंते नैव ते सुराः ॥ शरणं ते वयं प्राप्ता वधस्तस्य विचिंत्यताम् ॥२१॥
vicaraMti yathA martyAzzobhaMte naiva te surAH ॥ zaraNaM te vayaM prAptA vadhastasya viciMtyatAm ॥21॥
While men freely move about, the gods do not shine. We have sought refuge in you. Let measures for his annihilation be thought of.

॥ sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ iti dInavacazzrutvA devAnAM madhusUdanaH ॥ jagAda karuNAsindhurme ghanirhrAdayA girA ॥22॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these piteous entreaties of the gods, Viṣṇu the slayer of Madhu, the ocean of mercy, spoke in a thundering voice.

॥ विष्णुरुवाच ॥ भयं त्यजत हे देवा गमिष्याम्यहमाहवम्॥ जलंधरेण दैत्येन करिष्यामि पराक्रमम् ॥२३॥
॥ viSNuruvAca ॥ bhayaM tyajata he devA gamiSyAmyahamAhavam॥ jalaMdhareNa daityena kariSyAmi parAkramam ॥23॥
Viṣṇu said: O gods, cast off your fear. I shall come to the battle-ground. I shall show my valour to Jalandhara.

इत्युक्त्वा सहसोत्थाय दैत्यारिः खिन्नमानसः ॥ आरोहद्गरुडं वेगात्कृपया भक्तवत्सलः ॥ २४ ॥
ityuktvA sahasotthAya daityAriH khinnamAnasaH ॥ ArohadgaruDaM vegAtkRpayA bhaktavatsalaH ॥ 24 ॥
Having said this with distressed mind, Viṣṇu the enemy of the Asuras got up quickly. The god Viṣṇu who is favourably disposed to his devotees immediately mounted his vehicle Garuḍa.

गच्छन्तं वल्लभं दृष्ट्वा देवैस्सार्द्धं समुद्रजा ॥ सांजलिर्बाष्पनयना लक्ष्मीर्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
gacchantaM vallabhaM dRSTvA devaissArddhaM samudrajA ॥ sAMjalirbASpanayanA lakSmIrvacanamabravIt ॥25॥
On seeing her lord departing along with the gods, Lakṣmī, the daughter of the ocean, spoke with palms joined in reverence and tears welling up in the eyes.

लक्ष्म्युवाच॥ अहं ते वल्लभा नाथ भक्ता यदि च सर्वदा॥ तत्कथं ते मम भ्राता युद्धे वध्यः कृपानिधे ॥२६॥
lakSmyuvAca॥ ahaM te vallabhA nAtha bhaktA yadi ca sarvadA॥ tatkathaM te mama bhrAtA yuddhe vadhyaH kRpAnidhe ॥26॥
O lord, I am your beloved. If I am always devoted to you, O storehouse of mercy, how does my brother’s death be at your hands.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ जलंधरेण दैत्येन करिष्यामि पराक्रमम्॥ तैस्संस्तुतो गमिष्यामि युद्धाय त्वरितान्वितः ॥२७॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ jalaMdhareNa daityena kariSyAmi parAkramam॥ taissaMstuto gamiSyAmi yuddhAya tvaritAnvitaH ॥27॥
Viṣṇu said: Since I have been eulogised by the gods I shall go to the battle ground immediately. I can only show my valour to the Asura Jalandhara.

रुद्रांशसंभवत्वाच्च ब्रह्मणो वचनादपि ॥ प्रीत्या च तव नैवायं मम वध्यो जलंधरः॥२८॥
rudrAMzasaMbhavatvAcca brahmaNo vacanAdapi ॥ prItyA ca tava naivAyaM mama vadhyo jalaMdharaH॥28॥
He cannot be slain by me because he is a part of Śiva. Moreover Brahmā has said so. Further, you love him too.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktvA garuDArUDhazzaMkhacakragadAsibhRt॥ viSNurvegAdyayau yoddhuM devaizzakrAdibhissaha॥29॥
Sanatkumāra said: Having said this and seating himself on Garuḍa with the conch, discus, mace and the sword held in his hands, Viṣṇu hastened to the fight along with Indra and other gods.

द्रुतं स प्राप तत्रैव यत्र दैत्यो जलंधरः॥ कुर्वन् सिंहरवं देवैर्ज्वलद्भिर्विष्णुतेजसा॥2-5-16-३०॥
drutaM sa prApa tatraiva yatra daityo jalaMdharaH॥ kurvan siMharavaM devairjvaladbhirviSNutejasA॥2-5-16-30॥
Roaring like a lion and accompanied by the gods who blazed with Viṣṇu’s splendour, he reached the place where Jalandhara was waiting.

अथारुणानुजजवपक्षवातप्रपीडिताः ॥ वात्याविवर्तिता दैत्या बभ्रमुः खे यथा घनाः ॥३१॥
athAruNAnujajavapakSavAtaprapIDitAH ॥ vAtyAvivartitA daityA babhramuH khe yathA ghanAH ॥31॥
Then the Daityas afflicted by the gusts of wind set in motion by the wings in the speedy flight of the younger brother of Aruṇa (i.e Garuḍa) were blown here and there like the clouds in the sky tossed about in a stormy whirlwind.

tato jalaMdharo dRSTvA daityAn vAtyAprapIDitAn॥ uddhRtya vacanaM krodhAddrutaM viSNuM samabhyagAt॥32॥
Then on seeing the Asuras afflicted by the gusts of wind, Jalandhara rushed against Viṣṇu shouting out cries of bravery angrily.

एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवाश्चक्रुर्युद्धं प्रहर्षिताः ॥ तेजसा च हरेः पुष्टा महाबलसमन्विताः ॥३३॥
etasminnaMtare devAzcakruryuddhaM praharSitAH ॥ tejasA ca hareH puSTA mahAbalasamanvitAH ॥33॥
In the meantime the delighted gods equipped with a vast army began to fight with their strength increased by the brilliance of Viṣṇu.

युद्धोद्यतं समालोक्य देवसैन्यमुपस्थितम्॥ दैत्यानाज्ञापयामास समरे चातिदुर्मदान् ॥३४॥
yuddhodyataM samAlokya devasainyamupasthitam॥ daityAnAjJApayAmAsa samare cAtidurmadAn ॥34॥
Seeing the army of the gods present there ready to fight Jalandhara commanded the invincible Asuras thus.

जलंधर उवाच ॥ भोभो दैत्यवरा यूयं युद्धं कुरुत दुस्तरम्॥ शक्राद्यैरमरैरद्य प्रबलैः कातरैस्सदा॥३५॥
jalaMdhara uvAca ॥ bhobho daityavarA yUyaM yuddhaM kuruta dustaram॥ zakrAdyairamarairadya prabalaiH kAtaraissadA॥35॥
Jalandhara said: O Excellent Asuras, put up a stiff fight with Indra and other gods who are always cowardly though they have a huge army.

मौर्यास्तु लक्षसंख्याता धौम्रा हि शतसंख्यकाः॥ असुराः कोटिसंख्याताः कालकेयास्तथैव च॥३६॥
mauryAstu lakSasaMkhyAtA dhaumrA hi zatasaMkhyakAH॥ asurAH koTisaMkhyAtAH kAlakeyAstathaiva ca॥36॥
t my bidding let all these come out with their entire army—the Mauryas numbering a hundred thousand, the Dhūmras in hundreds, the Asuras and the Kālakeyas in crores and the Kālakas, the Daurhṛdas and the Kaṅkas in lakhs.

kAlakAnAM daurhRdAnAM kaMkAnAM lakSasaMkhyayA ॥ anye'pi svabalairyuktA viniryAMtu mamAjJayA॥37॥
Let the Kālakas, the wicked-hearted, and the Kaṅkas—numbering in hundreds of thousands—along with others equipped with their own forces, march forth by my command.

sarve sajjA viniryAta bahusenAbhisaMyutAH ॥ nAnAzastrAstrasaMyuktA nirbhayAH gatasaMzayAH ॥ 38 ॥
All of you come out readily equipped with many divisions of the army and different kinds of weapons. Be fearless and free from hesitations.

bhobho zuMbhanizuMbhau ca devAnsamarakAtarAn ॥ kSaNena sumahAvIryau tucchAnnAzayataM yuvAm ॥ 39 ॥
O Śumbha, O Niśumbha, destroy in a trice the insignificant gods who feel nervous in the battle field. You are extremely valorous.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ दैत्या जलंधराज्ञप्ता इत्थं युद्धविशारदाः॥ युयुधुस्ते सुरास्सर्वे चतुरंगबलान्विताः॥2-5-16-४०॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ daityA jalaMdharAjJaptA itthaM yuddhavizAradAH॥ yuyudhuste surAssarve caturaMgabalAnvitAH॥2-5-16-40॥
Sanatkumāra said: Thus the Asuras clever and efficient in battle, commanded by Jalandhara on the one hand and gods equipped with the four sorts of fighting groups on the other fought one another with maces, arrows, javelins, spears etc.

गदाभिस्तीक्ष्णबाणैश्च शूलपट्टिशतोमरैः ॥ केचित्परशुशूलैश्च निजघ्नुस्ते परस्परम् ॥ ४१ ॥
gadAbhistIkSNabANaizca zUlapaTTizatomaraiH ॥ kecitparazuzUlaizca nijaghnuste parasparam ॥ 41 ॥
With maces, sharp arrows, spears, pikes, and javelins, some (warriors) struck each other; others fought with battle-axes and tridents, attacking one another.

नानायुधैश्च परैस्तत्र निजघ्नुस्ते बलान्विता ॥ देवास्तथा महावीरा हृषीकेशबलान्विताः ॥ युयुधुस्तीक्ष्णबाणाश्च क्षिपंतस्सिंहवद्रवाः ॥ ४२ ॥
nAnAyudhaizca paraistatra nijaghnuste balAnvitA ॥ devAstathA mahAvIrA hRSIkezabalAnvitAH ॥ yuyudhustIkSNabANAzca kSipaMtassiMhavadravAH ॥ 42 ॥
The strong ones hit and struck with different weapons. The heroic gods supported and invigorated by Hṛṣīkeśa roared like lions and discharged sharp arrows.

Some fought with arrows of very sharp points; some with pestles and iron clubs and some with axes and spears.

इत्थं सुराणां दैत्यानां संग्रामस्समभून्महान्॥ अत्युल्बणो मुनीनां हि सिद्धानां भय कारकः ॥ ४४ ॥
itthaM surANAM daityAnAM saMgrAmassamabhUnmahAn॥ atyulbaNo munInAM hi siddhAnAM bhaya kArakaH ॥ 44 ॥
Thus the fight between the gods and the Asuras was terrific. It was very fierce frightening the sages and the Siddhas.
