॥ vyAsa uvAca ॥ sanatkumAra sarvajJa brahmaputra namostu te ॥ zruteyamadbhutA me'dya kathA zaMbhormahAtmanaH ॥ 1 ॥
Vyāsa said: O omniscient Sanatkumāra, son of Brahmā, obeisance be to you. This wonderful story of Śiva, the great soul, has been heard.

kSipte svatejasi brahmanbhAlanetrasamudbhave ॥ lavaNAMbhasi kiM tAtAbhavattatra vadAzu tat ॥ 2 ॥
O sage, when the brilliance born of the eye in the forehead had been cast off into the briny ocean, O dear sir, what happened? Please narrate it quickly.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zRNu tAta mahAprAjJa zivalIlAM mahAdbhutAm ॥ yacchrutvA zraddhayA bhakto yoginAM gatimApnuyAt ॥3॥
Sanatkumāra said: O dear one of great intellect, listen to the extremely wonderful sport of Śiva, on hearing which with faith a devotee attains the goal of Yogins.

atho zivasya tattejo bhAlanetrasamudbhavam॥ kSiptaM ca lavaNAmbhodhau sadyo bAlatvamApa ha ॥ 4 ॥
The brilliance of Śiva born of the eye in the forehead and cast off into the briny sea immediately assumed the form of a boy.

At the confluence of the river Gaṅgā and the ocean, the boy of terrific features cried loudly.

rudatastasya zabdena prAkaMpaddharaNI muhuH ॥ svargazca satyalokazca tatsvanAdbadhirIkRtaH ॥ 6 ॥
At the sound of the crying boy, the earth quaked frequently. The heaven and the Satyaloka became deafened at the noise.

bAlasya rodanenaiva sarve lokAzca tatrasuH ॥ sarvato lokapAlAzca vihvalIkRtamAnasAH ॥ 7 ॥
All the worlds were frightened. The guardians of the quarters became agitated in the mind.

kiM bahUktena viprendra cacAla sacarAcaram ॥ bhuvanaM nikhilaM tAta rodanAttacchizorvibho ॥ 8 ॥
O dear holy one, O great brahmin, the entire world including the mobile and immobile quaked at the cries of the boy.

अथ ते व्याकुलास्सर्वे देवास्समुनयो द्रुतम् ॥ पितामहं लोकगुरुं ब्रह्माणं शरणं ययुः ॥ ९ ॥
atha te vyAkulAssarve devAssamunayo drutam ॥ pitAmahaM lokaguruM brahmANaM zaraNaM yayuH ॥ 9 ॥
Then the distressed gods and the sages immediately sought refuge in Brahmā the grandfather and preceptor of the worlds.

तत्र गत्वा च ते देवा सुनयश्च सवासवाः ॥ प्रणम्य च सुसंस्तुत्य प्रोचुस्तं परमेष्ठिनम् ॥ 2-5-14-१० ॥
tatra gatvA ca te devA sunayazca savAsavAH ॥ praNamya ca susaMstutya procustaM parameSThinam ॥ 2-5-14-10 ॥
After going there, those sages and the gods including Indra bowed to and eulogised Brahmā and spoke these words.

devA UcuH ॥ lokAdhIza surAdhIza bhayannassamupasthitam ॥ tannAzaya mahAyogiJjAtoyaM hyadbhuto ravaH ॥11॥
The gods said: This mysterious sound has arisen. O lord of worlds, O lord of gods, we are frightened. O great Yogin please quell it.

॥ sanatkumAra uvAca॥ ॥ ityAkarNya vacasteSAM brahmA lokapitAmahaH ॥ gaMtumaicchattatastatra kimetaditi vismitaH ॥ 12 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing their words, Brahmā the grandfather of the worlds wished to go there. He was perplexed as to what it was.

ततो ब्रह्मा सुरैस्तातावतरत्सत्यलोकतः ॥ रसां तज्ज्ञातुमिच्छन्स समुद्रमगमत्तदा ॥१३॥
tato brahmA suraistAtAvataratsatyalokataH ॥ rasAM tajjJAtumicchansa samudramagamattadA ॥13॥
Then Brahmā descended from Satyaloka to the Earth along with the gods. Then he went to the ocean desirous of knowing what it was.

yAvattatrAgato brahmA sarvalokapitAmahaH ॥ tAvatsamudrasyotsaMge taM bAlaM sa dadarza ha॥14॥
When Brahmā the grandfather of the worlds came there, he saw the boy in the lap of the ocean.

आगतं विधिमालोक्य देवरूप्यथ सागरः॥ प्रणम्य शिरसा बालं तस्योत्संगे न्यवेशयत्॥१५॥
AgataM vidhimAlokya devarUpyatha sAgaraH॥ praNamya zirasA bAlaM tasyotsaMge nyavezayat॥15॥
On seeing Brahmā coming, the ocean assuming the form of a god bowed to him and placed the boy in his lap.

ततो ब्रह्माब्रवीद्वाक्यं सागरं विस्मयान्वितः ॥ जलराशे द्रुतं ब्रूहि कस्यायं शिशुरद्भुतः ॥१६॥
tato brahmAbravIdvAkyaM sAgaraM vismayAnvitaH ॥ jalarAze drutaM brUhi kasyAyaM zizuradbhutaH ॥16॥
Then the surprised Brahmā spoke these words to the ocean—“O ocean, tell me quickly about the parentage of this boy.”

॥ sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ brahmaNo vAkyamAkarNya muditassAgarastadA ॥ pratyuvAca prajezaM sa natvA stutvA kRtAMjaliH ॥ 17 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing the words of Brahmā, the ocean was delighted. After bowing to and eulogising him with palms joined in reverence he replied to Prajāpati Brahmā.

समुद्र उवाच ॥ भो भो ब्रह्मन्मया प्राप्तो बालकोऽयमजानता ॥ प्रभवं सिंधुगंगायामकस्मात्सर्वलोकप ॥ १८ ॥
samudra uvAca ॥ bho bho brahmanmayA prApto bAlako'yamajAnatA ॥ prabhavaM siMdhugaMgAyAmakasmAtsarvalokapa ॥ 18 ॥
The ocean said: O Brahmā, O lord of the worlds, this boy was suddenly seen in the confluence of the river Gaṅgā. I do not know about the origin of this boy.

जातकर्मादिसंस्कारान्कुरुष्वास्य जगद्गुरो ॥ जातकोक्तफलं सर्वं विधातर्वक्तुमर्हसि ॥ १९ ॥
jAtakarmAdisaMskArAnkuruSvAsya jagadguro ॥ jAtakoktaphalaM sarvaM vidhAtarvaktumarhasi ॥ 19 ॥
O preceptor of the universe, you perform the postnatal rites for this boy. O creator, let me know your predictions about his future according to his horoscope.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ एवं वदति पाथोधौ स बालस्सागरात्मजः ॥ ब्रह्माणमग्रहीत्कण्ठे विधुन्वंतं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ 2-5-14-२० ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ evaM vadati pAthodhau sa bAlassAgarAtmajaH ॥ brahmANamagrahItkaNThe vidhunvaMtaM muhurmuhuH ॥ 2-5-14-20 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Even as the ocean said these words, the son of the ocean caught hold of the neck of Brahmā and shook it several times.

विधूननं च तस्यैवं सर्वलोककृतो विधेः ॥ पीडितस्य च कालेय नेत्राभ्यामगमज्जलम् ॥ २१ ॥
vidhUnanaM ca tasyaivaM sarvalokakRto vidheH ॥ pIDitasya ca kAleya netrAbhyAmagamajjalam ॥ 21 ॥
In due course tears came out of the eyes of Brahmā, the creator of all the worlds, afflicted by the joggling and jolting.

कराभ्यामब्धिजातस्य तत्सुतस्य महौजसः ॥ कथंचिन्मुक्तकण्ठस्तु ब्रह्मा प्रोवाच सादरम् ॥ २२ ॥
karAbhyAmabdhijAtasya tatsutasya mahaujasaH ॥ kathaMcinmuktakaNThastu brahmA provAca sAdaram ॥ 22 ॥
Brahmā somehow extricated himself from the grip of the son of the ocean by means of his hands and spoke to the ocean.

विधूननं च तस्यैवं सर्वलोककृतो विधेः ॥ पीडितस्य च कालेय नेत्राभ्यामगमज्जलम् ॥ २१ ॥
vidhUnanaM ca tasyaivaM sarvalokakRto vidheH ॥ pIDitasya ca kAleya netrAbhyAmagamajjalam ॥ 21 ॥
Brahmā said: O ocean, listen, I shall narrate the future as predicted from the horoscope, entirely. Be attentive please.

नेत्राभ्यां विधृतं यस्मादनेनैव जलं मम॥ तस्माज्जलंधरेतीह ख्यातो नाम्ना भवत्वसौ ॥ ॥२४॥
netrAbhyAM vidhRtaM yasmAdanenaiva jalaM mama॥ tasmAjjalaMdharetIha khyAto nAmnA bhavatvasau ॥ ॥24॥
Since he was able to make my eyes water let him be famous in the name of Jalandhara.

अधुनैवैष तरुणस्सर्वशास्त्रार्थपारगः ॥ महापराक्रमो धीरो योद्धा च रणदुर्मदः ॥२५॥
adhunaivaiSa taruNassarvazAstrArthapAragaH ॥ mahAparAkramo dhIro yoddhA ca raNadurmadaH ॥25॥
He will become a youth now itself. He will become a master of all sacred lores, very valorous, courageous, heroic, invincible and majestic like you.

भविष्यति च गंभीरस्त्वं यथा समरे गुहः ॥ सर्वजेता च संग्रामे सर्वसंपद्विराजितः ॥ २६ ॥
bhaviSyati ca gaMbhIrastvaM yathA samare guhaH ॥ sarvajetA ca saMgrAme sarvasaMpadvirAjitaH ॥ 26 ॥
Like Kārttikeya he will be the conqueror of all in battles. He will shine with all sorts of prosperity.

दैत्यानामधिपो बालः सर्वेषां च भविष्यति ॥ विष्णोरपि भवेज्जेता न कुत श्चित्पराभवः ॥ २७ ॥
daityAnAmadhipo bAlaH sarveSAM ca bhaviSyati ॥ viSNorapi bhavejjetA na kuta zcitparAbhavaH ॥ 27 ॥
This boy will become the emperor of Asuras. He will conquer even Viṣṇu. He will face defeat from no quarter.

अवध्यस्सर्वभूतानां विना रुद्रं भविष्यति ॥ यत एष समुद्भूतस्तत्रेदानीं गमिष्यति ॥२८॥
avadhyassarvabhUtAnAM vinA rudraM bhaviSyati ॥ yata eSa samudbhUtastatredAnIM gamiSyati ॥28॥
He cannot be slain by any one except Śiva. He will return to the place from where he sprang up.

भविष्यति च गंभीरस्त्वं यथा समरे गुहः ॥ सर्वजेता च संग्रामे सर्वसंपद्विराजितः ॥ २६ ॥
bhaviSyati ca gaMbhIrastvaM yathA samare guhaH ॥ sarvajetA ca saMgrAme sarvasaMpadvirAjitaH ॥ 26 ॥
His wife will be a chaste lady who will increase good fortune. She will be exquisitely beautiful in every limb. She will be an ocean of good conduct and will speak pleasing words.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा शुक्रमाहूय राज्ये तं चाभ्यषेचयत् ॥ आमंत्र्य सरितान्नाथं ब्रह्मांतर्द्धानमन्वगात् ॥2-5-14-३०॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktvA zukramAhUya rAjye taM cAbhyaSecayat ॥ AmaMtrya saritAnnAthaM brahmAMtarddhAnamanvagAt ॥2-5-14-30॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying so he called Śukra and performed his coronation. Brahmā then took leave of the ocean and disappeared.

अथ तद्दर्शनोत्फुल्लनयनस्सागरस्तदा ॥ तमात्मजं समादाय स्वगेहमगमन्मुदा ॥ ३१ ॥
atha taddarzanotphullanayanassAgarastadA ॥ tamAtmajaM samAdAya svagehamagamanmudA ॥ 31 ॥
Thereafter the ocean with blooming eyes saw the son, took him to his abode joyously.

अपोषयन्महोपायैस्स्वबालं मुदितात्मकः ॥ सर्वांगसुन्दरं रम्यं महाद्भुतसुतेजसम् ॥३२॥
apoSayanmahopAyaissvabAlaM muditAtmakaH ॥ sarvAMgasundaraM ramyaM mahAdbhutasutejasam ॥32॥
With a joyous heart he nurtured the boy with diverse great means. The boy grew into a beautiful youth of exquisite limbs and wonderful splendour.

अथाम्बुधिस्समाहूय कालनेमिं महासुरम् ॥ वृन्दाभिधां सुतां तस्य तद्भार्यार्थमयाचत ॥३३॥
athAmbudhissamAhUya kAlanemiM mahAsuram ॥ vRndAbhidhAM sutAM tasya tadbhAryArthamayAcata ॥33॥
Then the ocean invited the great Asura Kālanemi and requested him to give his daughter named Vṛndā in marriage to his son.

कालनेम्यसुरो वीरोऽसुराणां प्रवरस्सुधीः ॥ साधु येनेम्बुधेर्याञ्चां स्वकर्मनिपुणो मुने ॥३४॥
kAlanemyasuro vIro'surANAM pravarassudhIH ॥ sAdhu yenembudheryAJcAM svakarmanipuNo mune ॥34॥
O sage, the heroic Asura Kālanemi,foremost among the Asuras, intelligent and efficient in his activities, welcomed the request of the ocean.

जलंधराय वीराय सागरप्रभवाय च ॥ ददौ ब्रह्मविधानेन स्वसुतां प्राणवल्लभाम् ॥३५॥
jalaMdharAya vIrAya sAgaraprabhavAya ca ॥ dadau brahmavidhAnena svasutAM prANavallabhAm ॥35॥
He gave his beloved daughter to Jalandhara, the brave son of the ocean, in marriage performing the nuptial rites according to the Brāhma style.

तदोत्सवो महानासीद्विवाहे च तयोस्तदा ॥ सुखं प्रापुर्नदा नद्योऽसुराश्चैवाखिला मुने ॥३६ ॥
tadotsavo mahAnAsIdvivAhe ca tayostadA ॥ sukhaM prApurnadA nadyo'surAzcaivAkhilA mune ॥36 ॥
O sage, great festivities were held in the marriage. The rivers and Asuras were happy.

समुद्रोऽति सुखं प्राप सुतं दृष्ट्वा हि सस्त्रियम् ॥ दानं ददौ द्विजातिभ्योऽप्यन्येभ्यश्च यथाविधि ॥ ३७ ॥
samudro'ti sukhaM prApa sutaM dRSTvA hi sastriyam ॥ dAnaM dadau dvijAtibhyo'pyanyebhyazca yathAvidhi ॥ 37 ॥
The ocean too became extremely happy seeing his son united to a bride. In accordance with the rules he made charitable gifts to the brahmins and others.

ये देवैर्निर्जिताः पूर्वं दैत्याः पाताल संस्थिताः ॥ ते हि भूमंडलं याता निर्भयास्तमुपाश्रिताः ॥ ३८ ॥
ye devairnirjitAH pUrvaM daityAH pAtAla saMsthitAH ॥ te hi bhUmaMDalaM yAtA nirbhayAstamupAzritAH ॥ 38 ॥
Those Asuras who had been formerly defeated by the gods and had sought shelter in Pātāla came fearlessly to the Earth and resorted to him.

ते कालनेमिप्रमुखास्ततोऽसुरास्तस्मै सुतां सिंधुसुताय दत्त्वा ॥ बभूवुरत्यन्तमुदान्विता हि तमाश्रिता देव विनिर्जयाय॥३९॥
te kAlanemipramukhAstato'surAstasmai sutAM siMdhusutAya dattvA ॥ babhUvuratyantamudAnvitA hi tamAzritA deva vinirjayAya॥39॥
Kālanemi and other Asuras were pleased after giving the daughter in marriage to the son of the ocean. In order to defeat the gods they resorted to him.

sa cApi vIrombudhibAlako'sau jalaMdharAkhyo'suravIravIraH ॥ saMprApya bhAryAmatisundarI vazI cakAra rAjyaM hi kaviprabhAvAt॥2-5-14-40॥
The heroic son of the ocean, Jalandhara, foremost among the Asura warriors, received a very beautiful lady as his wife and he ruled over the kingdom with the support of Śukra.
