sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ atha zambhurmahAdevo rathasthassarvasaMyutaH ॥ tripuraM sakalaM dagdhumudyato'bhUtsuradviSAm।1।
Sanatkumāra said: Then Śiva, the great lord, seated in the chariot and equipped with everything, got ready to burn the three cities completely, the cities of the enemies of the gods.

शीर्षं स्थानकमास्थाय संधाय च शरोत्तमम् ॥ सज्जं तत्कार्मुकं कृत्वा प्रत्यालीढं महाद्भुतम् ॥२॥
zIrSaM sthAnakamAsthAya saMdhAya ca zarottamam ॥ sajjaM tatkArmukaM kRtvA pratyAlIDhaM mahAdbhutam ॥2॥
The lord stood in the wonderful posture of Pratyālīḍha for a hundred thousand years. The bow was well strung and kept near the head.

nivezya dRDhamuSTau ca dRSTiM dRSTau nivezya ca॥ atiSThannizcalastatra zataM varSasahasrakam ॥3॥
The arrow was fixed. The fingers clenched at the bow firmly. The eyes were fixed.

ततोङ्गुष्ठे गणाध्यक्षस्स तु दैत्यनिशंस्थितः॥ न लक्ष्यं विविशुस्तानि पुराण्यस्य त्रिशूलिनः ॥४॥
tatoGguSThe gaNAdhyakSassa tu daityanizaMsthitaH॥ na lakSyaM vivizustAni purANyasya trizUlinaH ॥4॥
Gaṇeśa was stationed on the thumb. During this time the three cities did not come within the target path of the trident-bearing lord.

Then from the firmament, the odd-eyed Śiva who was standing there holding the bow and the arrow heard an auspicious voice.

bho bho na yAvadbhagavannarcito'sau vinAyakaH॥ purANi jagadIzeza sAMprataM na haniSyati ॥ 6 ॥
O lord of the master of the universe, you will not kill the Tripuras as long as the lord Gaṇeśa is not adored.

etacchrutvA tu vacanaM gajavaktramapUjayat ॥ bhadrakAlIM samAhUya tatoMdhakaniSUdanaH ॥ 7 ॥
On hearing these words, Śiva the destroyer of Andhaka called Bhadrakālī and worshipped the elephant-faced god Ganesa.

tasmin saMpUjite harSAtparituSTe purassare ॥ vinAyake tato vyomni dadarza bhagavAnharaH ॥ 8 ॥
When Gaṇeśa was worshipped, when he standing ahead was pleased, lord Śiva saw the three cities of the powerful Asuras, sons of Tāraka, joined together.

purANi trINi daityAnAM tArakANAM mahAtmanAm ॥ yathAtathaM hi yuktAni keciditthaM vadaMti ha ॥ 9 ॥
"The three ancient forts (cities) of the noble Daityas, the sons of Tāraka, were somehow constructed; some people indeed describe them in this way.

परब्रह्मणि देवेश सर्वोपास्ये महेश्वरे ॥ अन्यप्रसादतः कार्यं सिद्धिर्घटति नेति हि ॥ 2-5-10-१० ॥
parabrahmaNi deveza sarvopAsye mahezvare ॥ anyaprasAdataH kAryaM siddhirghaTati neti hi ॥ 2-5-10-10 ॥
It is said that when the great lord Śiva, the lord of the Gods, the supreme Brahman, worshipped by all is there, it is not proper -to say that he achieved success by another God’s grace.

स स्वतंत्रः परं ब्रह्म सगुणो निर्गुणोऽपि ह ॥ अलक्ष्यः सकलैस्स्वामी परमात्मा निरंजनः ॥ ११ ॥
sa svataMtraH paraM brahma saguNo nirguNo'pi ha ॥ alakSyaH sakalaissvAmI paramAtmA niraMjanaH ॥ 11 ॥
He is independent, the great Brahman, both possessed and devoid of attributes. He is invisible, the supreme soul and unsullied.

पंचदेवात्मकः पंचदेवोपास्यः परः प्रभुः ॥ तस्योपास्यो न कोप्यस्ति स एवोपास्य आलयम् ॥ १२ ॥
paMcadevAtmakaH paMcadevopAsyaH paraH prabhuH ॥ tasyopAsyo na kopyasti sa evopAsya Alayam ॥ 12 ॥
He is the soul of five divinities. He is worshipped by the five deitiesHe is the great lord. There is none else worthy of worship. He is the ultimate abode of all.

अथ वा लीलया तस्य सर्वं संघटते मुने ॥ चरितं देवदेवस्य वरदातुर्महेशितुः ॥ १३ ॥
atha vA lIlayA tasya sarvaM saMghaTate mune ॥ caritaM devadevasya varadAturmahezituH ॥ 13 ॥
Or, O sage, the activities of Śiva, the lord of the Gods, the granter of boons are but proper inasmuch as they constitute his divine sports.

तस्मिस्थिते महादेवे पूजयित्वा गणाधिपम् ॥ पुराणि तत्र कालेन जग्मुरेकत्वमाशु वै ॥ १४॥
tasmisthite mahAdeve pUjayitvA gaNAdhipam ॥ purANi tatra kAlena jagmurekatvamAzu vai ॥ 14॥
When the great God stood up after woeshipping Śiva, the three cities joined together into one unit.

एकीभावं मुने तत्र त्रिपुरे समुपागते ॥ बभूव तुमुलो हर्षो देवादीनां महात्मनाम् ॥ १५ ॥
ekIbhAvaM mune tatra tripure samupAgate ॥ babhUva tumulo harSo devAdInAM mahAtmanAm ॥ 15 ॥
O sage, when the three cities came to a unified whole, a tumultuous shout of joy rose up among the noble Gods and others.

ततो देवगणास्सर्वे सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ॥ जयेति वाचो मुमुचुः स्तुवंतश्चाष्टमूर्तिनम् ॥ १६ ॥
tato devagaNAssarve siddhAzca paramarSayaH ॥ jayeti vAco mumucuH stuvaMtazcASTamUrtinam ॥ 16 ॥
Then all the Gods, Siddhas and the sages shouted out “Victory” and eulogised Śiva who has eight cosmic bodies.

अथाहेति तदा ब्रह्मा विष्णुश्च जगतां पतिः ॥ समयोऽपि समायातो दैत्यानां वधकर्मणः ॥१७॥
athAheti tadA brahmA viSNuzca jagatAM patiH ॥ samayo'pi samAyAto daityAnAM vadhakarmaNaH ॥17॥
hen Brahmā and Viṣṇu, the lord of the worlds said—“The time for killing the Asuras has arrived, O great God. The three cities of the sons of Tāraka have come into one unified whole.

तेषां तारकपुत्राणां त्रिपुराणां महेश्वर ॥ देवकार्यं कुरु विभो एकत्वमपि चागतम् ॥ १८ ॥
teSAM tArakaputrANAM tripurANAM mahezvara ॥ devakAryaM kuru vibho ekatvamapi cAgatam ॥ 18 ॥
O Maheśvara (Great Lord), perform the divine task concerning the sons of Tāraka, the rulers of the three cities (Tripuras), for even their unity has now occurred.

यावन्न यान्ति देवेश विप्रयोगं पुराणि वै ॥ तावद्बाणं विमुंचश्च त्रिपुरं भस्मसात्कुरु॥।१९॥
yAvanna yAnti deveza viprayogaM purANi vai ॥ tAvadbANaM vimuMcazca tripuraM bhasmasAtkuru॥।19॥
O lord of the gods please discharge the arrow and reduce the three cities to ashes lest they should be separated again.

अथ सज्यं धनुः कृत्वा शर्वस्संधाय तं शरम् ॥ पूज्य पाशुपतास्त्रं स त्रिपुरं समचिंतयत् ॥2-5-10-२०॥
atha sajyaM dhanuH kRtvA zarvassaMdhAya taM zaram ॥ pUjya pAzupatAstraM sa tripuraM samaciMtayat ॥2-5-10-20॥
Then stringing the bow tight and fixing the arrow Pāśupata worthy of worship, he thought of the Tripuras.

अथ देवो महादेवो वरलीलाविशारदः ॥ केनापि कारणेनात्र सावज्ञं तदवैक्षत ॥ २१ ॥
atha devo mahAdevo varalIlAvizAradaH ॥ kenApi kAraNenAtra sAvajJaM tadavaikSata ॥ 21 ॥
Then lord Śiva, an expert in excellent divine sports for some reason looked at it with contempt.

पुरत्रयं विरूपाक्षः कर्तुं तद्भस्मसात्क्षणात् ॥ समर्थः परमेशानो मीनातु च सतां गतिः ॥२२॥
puratrayaM virUpAkSaH kartuM tadbhasmasAtkSaNAt ॥ samarthaH paramezAno mInAtu ca satAM gatiH ॥22॥
Śiva is capable of reducing the three cities to ashes in a trice, Still lord Śiva, the goal of the good bides his time.

दग्धुं समर्थो देवेशो वीक्षणेन जगत्त्रयम् ॥ अस्मद्यशो विवृद्ध्यर्थं शरं मोक्तुमिहार्हसि ॥२३॥
dagdhuM samartho devezo vIkSaNena jagattrayam ॥ asmadyazo vivRddhyarthaM zaraM moktumihArhasi ॥23॥
The lord of gods is capable of burning the three worlds by a single glance. O lord, for the flourish of our fame you shall discharge the arrow.

इति स्तुतोऽमरैस्सर्वैविष्ण्वादिविधिभिस्तदा ॥ दग्धुं पुरत्रयं तद्वै बाणेनैच्छन्महेश्वरः ॥ २४ ॥
iti stuto'maraissarvaiviSNvAdividhibhistadA ॥ dagdhuM puratrayaM tadvai bANenaicchanmahezvaraH ॥ 24 ॥
On being eulogised by Viṣṇu, Brahmā and other gods, lord Śiva desired to reduce the three cities to ashes with his arrow.

अभिलाख्यमुहूर्ते तु विकृष्य धनुरद्भुतम् ॥ कृत्वा ज्यातलनिर्घोषं नादमत्यंतदुस्सहम् ॥ २५ ॥
abhilAkhyamuhUrte tu vikRSya dhanuradbhutam ॥ kRtvA jyAtalanirghoSaM nAdamatyaMtadussaham ॥ 25 ॥
In the auspicious moment called Abhilāṣa he drew the bow and made a wonderful and unbearable twanging sound.

आत्मनो नाम विश्राव्य समाभाष्य महासुरान् ॥ मार्तंडकोटिवपुषं कांडमुग्रो मुमोच ह ॥२६॥
Atmano nAma vizrAvya samAbhASya mahAsurAn ॥ mArtaMDakoTivapuSaM kAMDamugro mumoca ha ॥26॥
He addressed the great Asuras and proclaimed his own name. Śiva discharged an arrow that had the refulgence of countless suns.

ददाह त्रिपुरस्थास्तान्दैत्यांस्त्रीन्विमलापहः ॥ स आशुगो विष्णुमयो वह्निशल्यो महाज्वलन् ॥ २७ ॥
dadAha tripurasthAstAndaityAMstrInvimalApahaH ॥ sa Azugo viSNumayo vahnizalyo mahAjvalan ॥ 27 ॥
The arrow which was constituted by Viṣṇu and whose steel head was fire god blazed forth and burnt the three Asuras who lived in the three cities. It thereby removed their sins.

ततः पुराणि दग्धानि चतुर्जलधिमेखलाम् ॥ गतानि युगपद्भूमिं त्रीणि दग्धानि भस्मशः ॥ २८ ॥
tataH purANi dagdhAni caturjaladhimekhalAm ॥ gatAni yugapadbhUmiM trINi dagdhAni bhasmazaH ॥ 28 ॥
The three cities reduced to ashes fell on the earth girt by the four oceans.

दैत्यास्तु शतशो दग्धास्तस्य बाणस्थवह्निना ॥ हाहाकारं प्रकुर्वंतश्शिवपूजाव्यतिक्रमात् ॥ २९ ॥
daityAstu zatazo dagdhAstasya bANasthavahninA ॥ hAhAkAraM prakurvaMtazzivapUjAvyatikramAt ॥ 29 ॥
Since they had refrained from the worship of Śiva, hundreds of Asuras were burnt by the fire generated by the arrow. They cried “Hā Hā” in distress.

तारकाक्षस्तु निर्दग्धो भ्रातृभ्यां सहितोऽभवत् ॥ सस्मार स्वप्रभुं देवं शंकरं भक्तवत्सलम् ॥ 2-5-10-३० ॥
tArakAkSastu nirdagdho bhrAtRbhyAM sahito'bhavat ॥ sasmAra svaprabhuM devaM zaMkaraM bhaktavatsalam ॥ 2-5-10-30 ॥
Tārakākṣa was burnt along with his two brothers. He remembered his lord Śiva who is favourably disposed to his devotees.

भक्त्या परमया युक्तः प्रलपन् विविधा गिरः ॥ महादेवं समुद्वीक्ष्य मनसा तमुवाच सः ॥ ३१ ॥
bhaktyA paramayA yuktaH pralapan vividhA giraH ॥ mahAdevaM samudvIkSya manasA tamuvAca saH ॥ 31 ॥
Lamenting in diverse ways and looking up to lord Śiva, he mentally appealed to him.

तारकाक्ष उवाच ॥ भव ज्ञातोसि तुष्टोऽसि यद्यस्मान् सह बंधुभिः ॥ तेन सत्येन भूयोऽपि कदा त्वं प्रदहिष्यसि ॥ ३२ ॥
tArakAkSa uvAca ॥ bhava jJAtosi tuSTo'si yadyasmAn saha baMdhubhiH ॥ tena satyena bhUyo'pi kadA tvaM pradahiSyasi ॥ 32 ॥
Tārakākṣa said: O Śiva, you are known to be pleased with us, if at any future hour you burn us, you will do so along with our kinsfolk. Let it be in accordance with this truth.

दुर्लभं लब्धमस्माभिर्यदप्राप्यं सुरासुरैः ॥ त्वद्भावभाविता बुद्धिर्जातेजाते भवत्विति ॥३३॥
durlabhaM labdhamasmAbhiryadaprApyaM surAsuraiH ॥ tvadbhAvabhAvitA buddhirjAtejAte bhavatviti ॥33॥
What is difficult and inaccessible to the gods and Asuras has been secured by us. Let our intellect be purified by our thoughts on you in every birth.

इत्येवं विब्रुवंतस्ते दानवास्तेन वह्निना ॥ शिवाज्ञयाद्भुतं दग्धा भस्मसादभवन्मुने ॥ ३४ ॥
ityevaM vibruvaMtaste dAnavAstena vahninA ॥ zivAjJayAdbhutaM dagdhA bhasmasAdabhavanmune ॥ 34 ॥
O sage, at the bidding of Śiva, those Asuras were burnt and reduced to ashes by the fire even as they were muttering thus.

अन्येऽपि बाला वृद्धाश्च दानवास्तेन वह्निना ॥ शिवाज्ञया द्रुतं व्यास निर्दग्धा भस्मसात्कृताः ॥ ३५ ॥
anye'pi bAlA vRddhAzca dAnavAstena vahninA ॥ zivAjJayA drutaM vyAsa nirdagdhA bhasmasAtkRtAH ॥ 35 ॥
Other Asuras too, children and old men were completely burnt out, O Vyāsa, at the bidding of Śiva and speedily reduced to ashes.

स्त्रियो वा पुरुषा वापि वाहनानि च तत्र ये ॥ सर्वे तेनाग्निना दग्धाः कल्पान्ते तु जगद्यथा ॥ ३६ ॥
striyo vA puruSA vApi vAhanAni ca tatra ye ॥ sarve tenAgninA dagdhAH kalpAnte tu jagadyathA ॥ 36 ॥
Just as the universe is burnt at the end of a Kalpa so also every thing and every one there, whether woman or man or vehicles, was reduced to ashes by that fire.

भर्तॄन्कंठगतान्हित्वा काश्चिद्दग्धा वरस्त्रियः ॥ काश्चित्सुप्ताः प्रमत्ताश्च रतिश्रांताश्च योषितः ॥ ३७ ॥
bhartRRnkaMThagatAnhitvA kAzciddagdhA varastriyaH ॥ kAzcitsuptAH pramattAzca ratizrAMtAzca yoSitaH ॥ 37 ॥
Some women were forced to leave their husbands necking them and were burnt by the fire. Some were sleeping, some were intoxicated and some were exhausted after their sexual dalliance. All were burnt.

अर्द्धदग्धा विबुद्धाश्च बभ्रमुर्मोहमूर्च्छिताः ॥ तेन नासीत्सुसूक्ष्मोऽपि घोरत्रिपुरवह्निना ॥३८॥
arddhadagdhA vibuddhAzca babhramurmohamUrcchitAH ॥ tena nAsItsusUkSmo'pi ghoratripuravahninA ॥38॥
Some who were partially burnt woke up and rushed here and there. They fell unconscious and fainted.

अविदग्धो विनिर्मुक्तः स्थावरो जंगमोपि वा ॥ वर्जयित्वा मयं दैत्यं विश्वकर्माणमव्ययम् ॥३९॥
avidagdho vinirmuktaH sthAvaro jaMgamopi vA ॥ varjayitvA mayaM daityaM vizvakarmANamavyayam ॥39॥
There was not even a minute particle whether mobile or immobile which escaped unscathed by that terrible Tripura fire excepting Maya, the imperishable Viśvakarman of the Asuras.

अविरुद्धं तु देवानां रक्षितं शंभुतेजसा ॥ विपत्कालेपि सद्भक्तं महेशशरणागतम् ॥2-5-10-४०॥
aviruddhaM tu devAnAM rakSitaM zaMbhutejasA ॥ vipatkAlepi sadbhaktaM mahezazaraNAgatam ॥2-5-10-40॥
Those who were not opposed to the Gods were saved by Śiva’s brilliance, those who devoutly sought refuge in lord Śiva at the time of adversity.

सन्निपातो हि येषां नो विद्यते नाशकारकः ॥ दैत्यानामन्यसत्त्वानां भावाभावे कृताकृते ॥ ४१ ॥
sannipAto hi yeSAM no vidyate nAzakArakaH ॥ daityAnAmanyasattvAnAM bhAvAbhAve kRtAkRte ॥ 41 ॥
Whether Asuras or other beings those whose collective activities were not destructive were saved; others of contrary activities were burnt in fire.

Hence, all possible efforts shall be made by good men to avoid despicable activities whereby people waste away themselves.

na saMyogo yathA teSAM bhUyAttripuravAsinAm ॥ matametaddhi sarveSAM daivAdyadi yato bhavet ॥43॥
Let there be no predicament to any as it happened in regard to the residents of the three cities. This is the opinion of all. By chance if it happens, let it.

ye pUjayaMtastatrApi daityA rudraM sabAMdhavAH ॥ gANapatyaM yayussarve zivapUjAvi dherbalAt ॥44॥
Those who worshipped Śiva along with their family attained Gaṇapati’s region, thanks to the worship of Siva.
