sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ IdRgvidhaM mahAdivyaM nAnAzcaryamayaM ratham ॥ saMnahya nigamAnazvAMstaM brahmA prArpayacchivam ॥ 1 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Brahmā handed over that divine chariot of various wonderful features to Śiva after yoking the Vedas as the horses.

zaMbhave'sau nivedyAdhiropayAmAsa zUlinam ॥ bahuzaH prArthya devezaM viSNvAdisurasamatam ॥ 2 ॥
After dedicating the same to Śiva, he requested Śiva the lord of the gods, approved by Viṣṇu and other gods to mount the chariot.

The great lord Śiva identifying himself with all the gods got into that chariot that had various scaffoldings attached to it.

RSibhiH stUyamAnazca devagaMdharvapannagaiH ॥ viSNunA brahmaNA cApi lokapAlairbabhUva ha ॥4॥
He was then eulogised by the gods, Gandharvas, serpents, sages, Viṣṇu, Brahmā and the guardians of the quarters.

Śiva, the granter of boons, surrounded by the groups of damsels, experts in music, shone well.

tasminnAro'hatirathaM kalpitaM lokasaMbhRtam ॥ zirobhiH patitA bhUmau turagA vedasaMbhavAH ॥6॥
Glancing at the charioteer when he mounted the chariot concocted with everything in the world, the horses constituted by the Vedas fell headlong to the ground.

cacAla vasudhA celussakalAzca mahIdharAH ॥ cakaMpe sahasA zeSo'soDhA tadbhAramAturaH ।7॥
The earth quaked. The mountains became tremulous. Śeṣa, unable to bear his weight, became distressed and soon began to tremble.

athAdhaH sa rathasyAsya bhagavAndharaNIdharaH ॥ vRSendrarUpI cotthAya sthApayAmAsa vai kSaNam ॥ 8 ॥
Lord Viṣṇu assumed the form of a lordly bull and went under the chariot. He lifted it up and steadied it for a short while.

kSaNAMtare vRSendro'pi jAnubhyAmagamaddharAm ॥ rathArUDhamahezasya sutejassoDhumakSamaH ॥ 9 ॥
But in another instant, unable to bear the weighty splendour of lord Śiva seated in the chariot, the lordly bull had to kneel down and crawl on the ground.

abhISuhasto bhagavAnudyamya ca hayAMstadA ॥ sthApayAmAsa devasya pacanAdvairathaM varam॥2-5-9-10॥
The Lord, holding the reins in His skilled hands, then controlled the horses and positioned the divine, excellent chariot of Arjuna (the godly one) in front of the army.

tato'sau nodayAmAsa manomArutaraMhasaH ॥ brahmA hayAnvedamayAnnaddhAnrathavare sthitaH ॥11॥
Then he (Brahmā), standing on the magnificent chariot, caused the Veda-composed horses—swift as the mind and wind—to move forward.

purANyuddizya vai trINi teSAM khasthAni tAni hi॥ adhiSThite maheze tu dAnavAnAM tarasvinAm॥12॥
Indeed, targeting the three ancient (forts) that were situated in the sky—those ruled by the powerful Danavas—(and) with Mahesha (Shiva) presiding.

अथाह भगवान्रुद्रो देवानालोक्य शंकरः॥ पशूनामाधिपत्यं मे धद्ध्वं हन्मि ततोऽसुरान्॥१३॥
athAha bhagavAnrudro devAnAlokya zaMkaraH॥ pazUnAmAdhipatyaM me dhaddhvaM hanmi tato'surAn॥13॥
Then lord Śiva looked at the gods and said: Give me the lordship of the animals. Then I shall kill the Asuras.

pRthakpazutvaM devAnAM tathAnyeSAM surottamAH॥ kalpayitvaiva vadhyAste nAnyathA daityasattamAH ॥ 14 ॥
O excellent gods, the excellent Asuras can be killed only after assigning separate animalhood to the gods and others. Not otherwise

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ iti zrutvA vacastasya devadevasya dhImataH ॥ viSAdamagamansarve pazutvaM pratizaMkitAH ॥ 15 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of the intelligent lord of the gods, they became dispirited growing suspicious of animalhood.

teSAM bhAvamatha jJAtvA devadevo'mbikApatiH ॥ vihasya kRpayA devAJchaMbhustAnidamabravIt ॥ 16 ॥
On knowing what was passing through their minds, Śiva, the lord of the gods, the consort of Pārvatī sympathised with the gods and laughingly said.

शंभुरुवाच ॥ मा वोऽस्तु पशुभावेऽपि पातो विबुधसत्तमाः ॥ श्रूयतां पशुभावस्य विमोक्षः क्रियतां च सः ॥ १७ ॥
zaMbhuruvAca ॥ mA vo'stu pazubhAve'pi pAto vibudhasattamAH ॥ zrUyatAM pazubhAvasya vimokSaH kriyatAM ca saH ॥ 17 ॥
Śiva said: O excellent gods, you will not fall even in your animalhood. Let it be heard, and let the process of release from animalhood be practised.

यौ वै पाशुपतं दिव्यं चरिष्यति स मोक्ष्यति ॥ पशुत्वादिति सत्यं वः प्रतिज्ञातं समाहिताः ॥ १८ ॥
yau vai pAzupataM divyaM cariSyati sa mokSyati ॥ pazutvAditi satyaM vaH pratijJAtaM samAhitAH ॥ 18 ॥
He who performs the divine rite of Pāśupata will be released from animalhood. I promise this to you. Be attentive.

ये चाप्यन्ये करिष्यंति व्रतं पाशुपतं मम ॥ मोक्ष्यंति ते न संदेहः पशुत्वात्सुरसत्तमाः ॥ १९ ॥
ye cApyanye kariSyaMti vrataM pAzupataM mama ॥ mokSyaMti te na saMdehaH pazutvAtsurasattamAH ॥ 19 ॥
O excellent gods, there is no doubt about it that those who perform my Pāśupata rite will become liberated.

नैष्ठिकं द्वादशाब्दं वा तदर्थं वर्षकत्रयम् ॥ शुश्रूषां कारयेद्यस्तु स पशुत्वाद्विमुच्यते ॥ 2-5-9-२० ॥
naiSThikaM dvAdazAbdaM vA tadarthaM varSakatrayam ॥ zuzrUSAM kArayedyastu sa pazutvAdvimucyate ॥ 2-5-9-20 ॥
He who renders service perpetually or for twelve years, becomes relieved of animalhood.

तस्मात्परमिदं दिव्यं चरिष्यथ सुरोत्तमाः ॥ पशुत्वान्मोक्ष्यथ तदा यूयमत्र न संशयः ॥२१॥
tasmAtparamidaM divyaM cariSyatha surottamAH ॥ pazutvAnmokSyatha tadA yUyamatra na saMzayaH ॥21॥
Hence O excellent gods, perform this divine rite. You will be released from animalhood. There is no doubt about this.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य महेशस्य परात्मनः ॥ तथेति चाब्रुवन्देवा हरिब्रह्मादयस्तथा ॥ २२ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacastasya mahezasya parAtmanaH ॥ tatheti cAbruvandevA haribrahmAdayastathA ॥ 22 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of lord Śiva, the great soul, Viṣṇu, Brahmā and other gods said. “So be it.”

तस्माद्वै पशवस्सर्वे देवासुरवराः प्रभोः ॥ रुद्रः पशुपतिश्चैव पशुपाशविमोचकः ॥ २३ ॥
tasmAdvai pazavassarve devAsuravarAH prabhoH ॥ rudraH pazupatizcaiva pazupAzavimocakaH ॥ 23 ॥
Hence all the gods and Asuras became the animals of the lord. Śiva became the lord of animals. He is the person who unties the nooses of the animals.

तदा पक्षुपतीत्येतत्तस्य नाम महेशितुः ॥ प्रसिद्धमभवद्वध्वा सर्वलोकेषु शर्मदम् ॥ २४ ॥
tadA pakSupatItyetattasya nAma mahezituH ॥ prasiddhamabhavadvadhvA sarvalokeSu zarmadam ॥ 24 ॥
Then the name Paśupati, that bestows welfare, spread in all the worlds and became renowned.

मुदा जयेति भाषंतस्सर्वे देवर्षयस्तदा ॥ अमुदंश्चाति देवेशो ब्रह्मा विष्णुः परेऽपि च ॥२५॥
mudA jayeti bhASaMtassarve devarSayastadA ॥ amudaMzcAti devezo brahmA viSNuH pare'pi ca ॥25॥
Then the celestial sage, Indra, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and others rejoiced shouting “Victory.”

तस्मिंश्च समये यच्च रूपं तस्य महात्मनः ॥ जातं तद्वर्णितुं शक्यं न हि वर्षशतैरपि ॥२६॥
tasmiMzca samaye yacca rUpaM tasya mahAtmanaH ॥ jAtaM tadvarNituM zakyaM na hi varSazatairapi ॥26॥
Even in hundreds of years it is impossible to describe adequately the form of the great soul which he assumed then.

एवं विधो महेशानो महेशान्यखिलेश्वरः ॥ जगाम त्रिपुरं हंतुं सर्वेषां सुखदायकः ॥ २७ ॥
evaM vidho mahezAno mahezAnyakhilezvaraH ॥ jagAma tripuraM haMtuM sarveSAM sukhadAyakaH ॥ 27 ॥
Śiva the lord of Pārvatī and everyone, the bestower of happiness to all, went ahead to destroy the three cities.

तं देवदेवं त्रिपुरं निहंतुं तदानु सर्वे तु रविप्रकाशाः ॥ गजैर्हयैस्सिंहवरै रथैश्च वृषैर्ययुस्तेऽमरराजमुख्याः॥२८॥
taM devadevaM tripuraM nihaMtuM tadAnu sarve tu raviprakAzAH ॥ gajairhayaissiMhavarai rathaizca vRSairyayuste'mararAjamukhyAH॥28॥
Then all the gods, resplendent like the sun, under the lord of the gods and others went on elephants, horses, lions, bulls and chariots to kill Tripuras, leaders of the Asuras.

हलैश्च शालैर्मुशलैर्भुशुण्डैर्गिरीन्द्रकल्पैर्गिरिसंनिभाश्च॥ नानायुधैस्संयुतबाहवस्ते ततो नु हृष्टाः प्रययुस्सुरेशाः ॥ २९ ॥
halaizca zAlairmuzalairbhuzuNDairgirIndrakalpairgirisaMnibhAzca॥ nAnAyudhaissaMyutabAhavaste tato nu hRSTAH prayayussurezAH ॥ 29 ॥
The leading gods as huge as mountains went ahead delighted and well-armed with all sorts of missiles, plough-shares, mortars, iron clubs and uprooted trees as huge as mountains.

नानायुधाढ्याः परमप्रकाशा महोत्सवश्शंभुजयं वदंतः ॥ ययुः पुरस्तस्य महेश्वरस्य तदेन्द्रपद्मोद्भवविष्णुमुख्याः॥2-5-9-३०॥
nAnAyudhADhyAH paramaprakAzA mahotsavazzaMbhujayaM vadaMtaH ॥ yayuH purastasya mahezvarasya tadendrapadmodbhavaviSNumukhyAH॥2-5-9-30॥
Then Indra, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and others went ahead of lord Śiva jubilantly shouting cries of victory to Śiva, well-armed with various weapons and shining brilliantly.

जहृषुर्मुनयस्सर्वे दंडहस्ता जटाधराः ॥ ववृषुः पुष्पवर्षाणि खेचरा सिद्धचारणाः ॥ ३१ ॥
jahRSurmunayassarve daMDahastA jaTAdharAH ॥ vavRSuH puSpavarSANi khecarA siddhacAraNAH ॥ 31 ॥
Sages with matted hair and staffs in the hands rejoiced. Siddhas and Cāraṇas moving about in the sky showered flowers.

पुत्रत्रयं च विप्रेन्द्रा व्रजन्सर्वे गणेश्वराः ॥ तेषां संख्या च कः कर्तुं समर्थो वच्मि कांश्चन ॥ ३२ ॥
putratrayaM ca viprendrA vrajansarve gaNezvarAH ॥ teSAM saMkhyA ca kaH kartuM samartho vacmi kAMzcana ॥ 32 ॥
O great brahmins, all the Gaṇeśvaras went to the three cities. Who can enumerate them fully? I shall mention a few.

गणेश्वरैर्देवगणैश्च भृङ्गी समावृतस्सर्वगणेन्द्रवर्यः ॥ जगाम योगांस्त्रिपुरं निहंतुं विमानमारुह्य यथा महेन्द्रः ॥३३॥।
gaNezvarairdevagaNaizca bhRGgI samAvRtassarvagaNendravaryaH ॥ jagAma yogAMstripuraM nihaMtuM vimAnamAruhya yathA mahendraH ॥33॥।
Bhṛṅgin, the chief of all Gaṇeśas, surrounded by lord of Gaṇas and gods went speedily to destroy the three cities like Mahendra seated in an aerial chariot.

केशो विगतवासश्च महाकेशो महाज्वरः ॥ सोमवल्लीसवर्णश्च सोमदस्सनकस्तथा ॥ ३४ ॥
kezo vigatavAsazca mahAkezo mahAjvaraH ॥ somavallIsavarNazca somadassanakastathA ॥ 34 ॥
Keśa, the unclothed one, Mahākeśa with great locks, the personified Great Fever, one resembling the Soma creeper in color, the giver of Soma, and Sanaka—all these were present.

सोमधृक् सूर्यवर्चाश्च सूर्यप्रेषणकस्तथा ॥ सूर्याक्षस्सूरिनामा च सुरस्सुन्दर एव च॥३५॥
somadhRk sUryavarcAzca sUryapreSaNakastathA ॥ sUryAkSassUrinAmA ca surassundara eva ca॥35॥
The bearer of Soma, the radiant one like the Sun, the sender of the Sun, the sun-eyed one, the wise-named, the divine, and the beautiful one were also there.

प्रस्कंदः कुन्दरश्चंडः कंपनश्चातिकंपनः ॥ इन्द्रश्चेन्द्रजवश्चैव यंता हिमकरस्तथा॥३६॥
praskaMdaH kundarazcaMDaH kaMpanazcAtikaMpanaH ॥ indrazcendrajavazcaiva yaMtA himakarastathA॥36॥
Praskanda, Kundara, the fierce Caṇḍa, Kampana and the greatly shaking Atikampana, Indra and the swift Indrajava, the charioteer, and the Moon were present.

zatAkSazcaiva paMcAkSaH sahasrAkSo mahodaraH ॥ satIjahuzzatAsyazca raMkaH karpUrapUtanaH ॥37॥
The hundred-eyed, five-eyed, and thousand-eyed beings; the great-bellied one; Satījahu; the hundred-mouthed one; Ranka and Karpura-Putana were also among them.

dvizikhastrizikhazcaiva tathAhaMkArakArakaH॥ ajavaktro'STavaktrazca hayavaktro'rddhavaktrakaH ॥38॥
The two-crested and three-crested ones, the creator of ego, the goat-faced, the eight-faced, the horse-faced, and the half-faced beings were all there.

ityAdyA gaNapA vIrA bahavo'parimeyakAH ॥ prayayuH parivAryezaM lakSyalakSaNavarjitAH॥39॥
Thus, innumerable heroic Gaṇas (attendants of Shiva), formless and without attributes, went forth, surrounding the Lord (Īśa).

samAvRtya mahAdevaM tadApuste pinAkinam ॥ dagdhuM samarthA manasA kSaNena sacarAcaram ॥ 2-5-9-40 ॥
They were capable of burning the entire world including the mobile and immobile beings, within a trice by their very thought. Surrounding Śiva, the great lord, they went ahead.

dagdhuM jagatsarvamidaM samarthAH kiMtvatra dagdhuM tripuraM pinAkI ॥ rathena kiM cAtra zareNa tasya gaNaizca kiM devagaNaizca zambhoH ॥41॥
Śiva is capable of burning the entire world. Of what avail are the Gaṇas, gods, chariot, and arrows to Śiva in order to burn the three cities?

sa eva dagdhuM tripurANi tAni devadviSAM vyAsa pinAkapANiH ॥ svayaM gatastatra gaNaizca sArddhaM nijaissurANAmapi so'dbhutotiH ॥42॥
O Vyāsa, that trident-bearing lord, of wonderful power of causing enjoyment and protection, himself went there with his own Gaṇas and the gods to burn the three cities of the enemies of gods.

किं तत्र कारणं चान्यद्वच्मि ते ऋषिसत्तम ॥ लोकेषु ख्यापनार्थं वै यशः परमलापहम् ॥४३॥
kiM tatra kAraNaM cAnyadvacmi te RSisattama ॥ lokeSu khyApanArthaM vai yazaH paramalApaham ॥43॥
What the reason was, I shall tell you, O excellent sage. It was to make his glory known to all the worlds, the glory that dispels all sins and dirt.

anyacca kAraNaM hyetadduSTAnAM pratyayAya vai॥ sarveSvapi ca deveSu yasmAnnAnyo viziSyate॥44॥
Another reason was to convince the wicked, since there is none to excel him among the gods.
