sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ etacchutvA tu sarveSAM devAdInAM vaco haraH ॥ aMgIcakAra suprItyA zaraNyo bhaktavatsalaH॥1॥
Samtkumāra said: On hearing the words of the gods and others, Śiva accepted the proposal. The lord is worthy of being sought refuge and is also favourably disposed to his devotees.

O sage, in the meantime the goddess Pārvatī arrived there with the two sons where Śiva was in conversation with the gods.

On seeing Pārvatī come there, Viṣṇu and others were surprised but without agitation they bowed to her in great humility.

O sage, they shouted cries of “Victory”. But unable to know the cause of her arrival, they remained silent.

On being eulogised by the gods, the goddess Pārvatī full of wonderful enthusiasm spoke lovingly to her lord, an expert in different kinds of sports.

devyuvAca ॥ krIDamAnaM vibho pazya SaNmukhaM ravisaMnibham ॥ putraM putravatAM zreSTha bhUSitaM bhUSaNairvaraiH ॥6॥
The goddess said: O lord, see the sportive six-faced Kārttikeya, refulgent like the sun our excellent son embellished by excellent ornaments.

ityevaM lokamAtrA ca vAgbhissaMbodhitazzivaH ॥ na yayau tRptimIzAnaH piban skaMdAnanAmRtam ॥ 7 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Thus addressed by the mother of the worlds with pleasing words, Lord Śiva was never satiated in drinking nectar of the beauty of Skanda’s face.

न सस्मारागतान्दैत्यान्निजतेजोनिपीडितान् ॥ स्कंदमालिंग्य चाघ्राय मुगोदाति महेश्वरः ॥८॥
na sasmArAgatAndaityAnnijatejonipIDitAn ॥ skaMdamAliMgya cAghrAya mugodAti mahezvaraH ॥8॥
He recollected the Asuras who had come (to fight and) pounded by his splendrous valour. Embracing and kissing Skanda on the head lord Śiva rejoiced much.

जगदम्बाथ तत्रैव संमंत्र्य प्रभुणा च सा ॥ स्थित्वा किञ्चित्समुत्तस्थौ नानालीलाविशारदा ॥९॥
jagadambAtha tatraiva saMmaMtrya prabhuNA ca sA ॥ sthitvA kiJcitsamuttasthau nAnAlIlAvizAradA ॥9॥
Then the mother of the universe stayed there for a while and held conversation with the lord. Afterwards the goddess, an expert in different kinds of sports stood up.

ततस्सनंदी सह षण्मुखेन तया च सार्द्धं गिरिराजपुत्र्या ॥ विवेश शम्भुर्भवनं सुलीलः सुरैस्समस्तैरभिवंद्यमानः ॥2-5-7-१०॥
tatassanaMdI saha SaNmukhena tayA ca sArddhaM girirAjaputryA ॥ viveza zambhurbhavanaM sulIlaH suraissamastairabhivaMdyamAnaH ॥2-5-7-10॥
Then Śiva of good sports entered his apartment accompanied by Nandin and Pārvatī. He was then saluted by all the gods.

dvArasya pArzvataH tasthurdevadevasya dhImataH ॥ te'tha devA mahAvyagrA vimanaskA mune'khilaH ॥ 11 ॥
O sage, all the gods dispirited and worried stood on either side of the doorway of mansion of Śiva, the intelligent lord of the gods.

किं कर्तव्यं क्व गंतव्यं कः स्यादस्मत्सुखप्रदः ॥ किं तु किंत्विति संजातं हा हताः स्मेति वादिनम् ॥ १२ ॥
kiM kartavyaM kva gaMtavyaM kaH syAdasmatsukhapradaH ॥ kiM tu kiMtviti saMjAtaM hA hatAH smeti vAdinam ॥ 12 ॥
They began to mutter “What shall we do? Where shall we go? Who will make us happy? Everything has happened with a “but.” We are doomed.”

अन्योन्यं प्रेक्ष्य शक्राद्या बभूवुश्चातिविह्वलाः ॥ प्रोचुर्विकलवाक्यं ते धिक्कुर्वन्तो निजं विधिम् ॥ १३ ॥
anyonyaM prekSya zakrAdyA babhUvuzcAtivihvalAH ॥ procurvikalavAkyaM te dhikkurvanto nijaM vidhim ॥ 13 ॥
Indra and others looked at one another’s face. They were much agitated. They spoke in faltering words. They cursed their fate.

पापा वयमिहेत्यन्ये ह्यभाग्याश्चेति चापरे ॥ ते भाग्यवंतो दैत्येन्द्रा इति चान्येऽब्रुवन् सुराः ॥ १४ ॥
pApA vayamihetyanye hyabhAgyAzceti cApare ॥ te bhAgyavaMto daityendrA iti cAnye'bruvan surAH ॥ 14 ॥
Some gods said “We are sinners.” Others said “We are unfortunate.” Still others said “The great Asuras are very fortunate.”

तस्मिन्नेवांतरे तेषां श्रुत्वा शब्दाननेकशः ॥ कुंभोदरो महातेजा दंडेनाताडयत्सुरान् ॥ १५ ॥
tasminnevAMtare teSAM zrutvA zabdAnanekazaH ॥ kuMbhodaro mahAtejA daMDenAtADayatsurAn ॥ 15 ॥
In the meantime on hearing their multifarious voices, Kumbhodara of excessive refulgence beat the gods with a baton.

दुद्रुवुस्ते भयाविष्टा देवा हाहेति वादिनः ॥ अपतन्मुनयश्चान्ये विह्वलत्वं बभूव ह ॥ १६ ॥
dudruvuste bhayAviSTA devA hAheti vAdinaH ॥ apatanmunayazcAnye vihvalatvaM babhUva ha ॥ 16 ॥
The terrified gods shouting “Hā Hā” fled from there. The sages faltered and fell on the ground. There was excitement and great confusion.

इन्द्रस्तु विकलोतीव जानुभ्यामवनीं गतः ॥ अन्ये देवर्षयोतीव विकलाः पतिता भुवि ॥ १७ ॥
indrastu vikalotIva jAnubhyAmavanIM gataH ॥ anye devarSayotIva vikalAH patitA bhuvi ॥ 17 ॥
Unnerved and languid, Indra crawled on his knees. The celestial sages dropped to the ground.

सर्वे मिलित्वा मुनयस्सुराश्च सममाकुलाः ॥ संगता विधिहर्योस्तु समीपं मित्रचेतसोः ॥ १८ ॥
sarve militvA munayassurAzca samamAkulAH ॥ saMgatA vidhiharyostu samIpaM mitracetasoH ॥ 18 ॥
The excessively agitated sages and gods gathered together and approached Brahmā and Viṣṇu of friendly tamperament.

अहो विधिबलं चैतन्मुनयः कश्यपादयः ॥ वदंति स्म तदा सर्वे हरि लोकभयापदम् ॥१९॥
aho vidhibalaM caitanmunayaH kazyapAdayaH ॥ vadaMti sma tadA sarve hari lokabhayApadam ॥19॥
The sages Kaśyapa and others said to Viṣṇu who removes the fear of all the worlds “O this is due to our ill luck."

अभाग्यान्न समाप्तं तु कार्यमित्यपरे द्विजाः ॥ कस्माद्विघ्नमिदं जातमित्यन्ये ह्यति विस्मिताः ॥ 2-5-7-२० ॥
abhAgyAnna samAptaM tu kAryamityapare dvijAH ॥ kasmAdvighnamidaM jAtamityanye hyati vismitAH ॥ 2-5-7-20 ॥
The other brahmins said—“Our task is not completed due to our ill luck.” Still others who were greatly surprised said—“How did this obstacle happen?”

इत्येवं वचनं श्रुत्वा कश्यपाद्युदितं मुने ॥ आश्वासयन्मुनीन्देवान् हरिर्वाक्यमुपाददे ॥ २१ ॥
ityevaM vacanaM zrutvA kazyapAdyuditaM mune ॥ AzvAsayanmunIndevAn harirvAkyamupAdade ॥ 21 ॥
O sage, on hearing these words of Kaśyapa and others, Viṣṇu consoled the sages and the gods and spoke thus.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ हे देवा मुनयस्सर्वे मद्वचः शृणुतादरात् ॥ किमर्थं दुःखमापन्ना दुखं तु त्यजताखिलम् ॥ २२ ॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ he devA munayassarve madvacaH zRNutAdarAt ॥ kimarthaM duHkhamApannA dukhaM tu tyajatAkhilam ॥ 22 ॥
Viṣṇu said: O gods, O sages, you listen to my words with attention. Why are you distressed? Eschew your sorrows.

महदाराधनं देवा न सुसाध्यं विचार्य्यताम् ॥ महदाराधने पूर्वं भवेद्दुःखमिति श्रुतम् ॥ विज्ञाय दृढतां देवाः प्रसन्नो भवति ध्रुवम् ॥ २३ ॥
mahadArAdhanaM devA na susAdhyaM vicAryyatAm ॥ mahadArAdhane pUrvaM bhavedduHkhamiti zrutam ॥ vijJAya dRDhatAM devAH prasanno bhavati dhruvam ॥ 23 ॥
O gods ponder over this. This propitiation of the great is not an easy task. It is heard that there is great difficulty at first in propitiating the great. The lord will certainly be pleased after coming to know of your resolute nature.

शिवस्सर्वगणायक्षस्सहसा परमेश्वरः ॥ विचार्यतां हृदा सर्वैः कथं वश्यो भवेदिति ॥२४॥
zivassarvagaNAyakSassahasA paramezvaraH ॥ vicAryatAM hRdA sarvaiH kathaM vazyo bhavediti ॥24॥
Let this be pondered over well by all of you, how can lord Śiva, the presiding deity of the Gaṇas be made favourable immediately.

प्रणवं पूर्वमुच्चार्य्य नमः पश्चादुदाहरेत् ॥ शिवायेति ततः पश्चाच्छुभद्वयमतः परम् ॥ २५ ॥
praNavaM pUrvamuccAryya namaH pazcAdudAharet ॥ zivAyeti tataH pazcAcchubhadvayamataH param ॥ 25 ॥
O scholars, the following mantra shall be repeated—Utter the syllable Oṃkāra first, then repeat the word Namaḥ (obeisance).

कुरुद्वयं ततः प्रोक्तं शिवाय च ततः पुनः ॥ नमश्च प्रणवश्चैव मंत्रमेवं सदा बुधाः ॥ २६ ॥
kurudvayaM tataH proktaM zivAya ca tataH punaH ॥ namazca praNavazcaiva maMtramevaM sadA budhAH ॥ 26 ॥
Then say Śivāya (to Śiva). Then repeat “Śubham” twice and “Kuru” twice. Afterwards say “Śivāya Namaḥ Om.”

अवर्तध्वं पुनर्यूयं यदि शंभुकृते तदा ॥ कोटिमेकं तथा जप्त्वा शिवः कार्यं करिष्यति ॥ २७ ॥
avartadhvaM punaryUyaM yadi zaMbhukRte tadA ॥ koTimekaM tathA japtvA zivaH kAryaM kariSyati ॥ 27 ॥
If you repeat this mantra a crore times thinking of Śiva, Śiva will carry out the task.

इत्युक्ते च तदा तेन हरिणा प्रभविष्णुना ॥ तथा देवाः पुनश्चक्रुर्हरस्याराधनं मुने ॥ २८ ॥
ityukte ca tadA tena hariNA prabhaviSNunA ॥ tathA devAH punazcakrurharasyArAdhanaM mune ॥ 28 ॥
O sage, when this was mentioned by Viṣṇu the powerful, the gods began to propitiate Śiva.

saMjajApa harizcApi savidhizzivamAnasaH ॥ devAnAM kAryasiddhyarthaM munInAM ca vizeSataH ॥29॥
For the fulfilment of the task of the gods and the sages, Viṣṇu and Brahmā, with minds fixed in Śiva performed the Japa.

मुहुः शिवेति भाषंतो देवा धैर्यसमन्विताः ॥ कोटिसंख्यं तदा कृत्वा स्थितास्ते मुनिसत्तम ॥ 2-5-7-३० ॥
muhuH ziveti bhASaMto devA dhairyasamanvitAH ॥ koTisaMkhyaM tadA kRtvA sthitAste munisattama ॥ 2-5-7-30 ॥
O excellent sage, they stood there steady and repeated the mantra a crore times uttering the name “Śiva” several times.

एतस्मिन्नंतरे साक्षाच्छिवः प्रादुरभूत्स्वयम् ॥ यथोक्तेन स्वरूपेण वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥ ३१ ॥
etasminnaMtare sAkSAcchivaH prAdurabhUtsvayam ॥ yathoktena svarUpeNa vacanaM cedamabravIt ॥ 31 ॥
In the meantime Śiva came into direct view assuming his real form and spoke.

श्रीशिव उवाच ॥ हे हरे हे विधे देवा मुनयश्च शुभव्रताः ॥ प्रसन्नोऽस्मि वरं ब्रूत जयेनानेन चेप्सितम् ॥ ३२ ॥
zrIziva uvAca ॥ he hare he vidhe devA munayazca zubhavratAH ॥ prasanno'smi varaM brUta jayenAnena cepsitam ॥ 32 ॥
Lord Śiva said: O Viṣṇu, O Brahmā, O gods and O sages of auspicious rites, I am delighted by your Japa. Speak out the desired boon.

॥ देवा ऊचुः ॥ यदि प्रसन्नो देवेश जगदीश्वर शंकर ॥ सुरान् विज्ञाय विकलान् हन्यंतां त्रिपुराणि च ॥३३॥
॥ devA UcuH ॥ yadi prasanno deveza jagadIzvara zaMkara ॥ surAn vijJAya vikalAn hanyaMtAM tripurANi ca ॥33॥
The gods said: O Śiva, lord of the gods, lord of the universe, if you are pleased, realising that the gods are unnerved, let the Tripuras be destroyed.

रक्षास्मान्परमेशान दीनबंधो कृपाकर ॥ त्वयैव रक्षिता देवास्सदापद्भ्यो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ ३४ ॥
rakSAsmAnparamezAna dInabaMdho kRpAkara ॥ tvayaiva rakSitA devAssadApadbhyo muhurmuhuH ॥ 34 ॥
O lord Śiva, O merciful one, O kinsman of the distressed, save us. We, gods, have always been saved from adversities by you alone.

॥ सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्युक्तं वचनं तेषां श्रुत्वा सहरिवेधसाम् ॥ विहस्यांतस्तदा ब्रह्मन्महेशः पुनरब्रवीत् ॥ ३५ ॥
॥ sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktaM vacanaM teSAM zrutvA saharivedhasAm ॥ vihasyAMtastadA brahmanmahezaH punarabravIt ॥ 35 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: O brahmin, on hearing these words uttered by them including Viṣṇu and Brahmā, lord Śiva laughed to himself and spoke again.

॥ महेश उवाच ॥ हे हरे हे विधे देवा मुनयश्चाखिला वचः ॥ मदीयं शृणुतादृत्य नष्टं मत्वा पुरत्रयम् ॥३६॥
॥ maheza uvAca ॥ he hare he vidhe devA munayazcAkhilA vacaH ॥ madIyaM zRNutAdRtya naSTaM matvA puratrayam ॥36॥
Lord Śiva said: Viṣṇu, O Brahmā, O gods, O sages all of you listen to my words with attention considering that the three cities have been already destroyed.

रथं च सारथिं दिव्यं कार्मुकं शरमुत्तमम् ॥ पूर्वमंगीकृतं सर्वमुपपादयताचिरम् ॥ ३७ ॥
rathaM ca sArathiM divyaM kArmukaM zaramuttamam ॥ pUrvamaMgIkRtaM sarvamupapAdayatAciram ॥ 37 ॥
Hence make arrangements for the chariot, charioteer, divine bow and excellent arrows as agreed to by you all. Do not delay.

हे विष्णो हे विधे त्वं हि त्रिलोकाधिपतिर्ध्रुवम् ॥ सर्वसम्राट्प्रकारं मे कर्तुमर्हसि यत्नतः ॥ ३८ ॥
he viSNo he vidhe tvaM hi trilokAdhipatirdhruvam ॥ sarvasamrATprakAraM me kartumarhasi yatnataH ॥ 38 ॥
O Brahmā, O Viṣṇu, you are the lord of the three worlds, to be sure. Hence provide me with the paraphernalia of an emperor.

नष्टं पुरत्रयं मत्वा देवसाहाय्यमित्युत ॥ करिष्यथः प्रयत्नेनाधिकृतौ सर्गपालने ॥ ३९ ॥
naSTaM puratrayaM matvA devasAhAyyamityuta ॥ kariSyathaH prayatnenAdhikRtau sargapAlane ॥ 39 ॥
You too had been entrusted with the tasks of creation and sustenance. You shall make all efforts, considering the destruction of the three cities an act of help to the gods.

ayaM maMtro mahApuNyo matprItijanakazzubhaH ॥ bhuktimuktipradassarvakAmadazzaivakAvaha ॥2-5-7-40॥
This mantra is highly meritorious and auspicious. It generates the pleasure of the gods. It yields both worlds by enjoyment and salvation, confers cherished desires and brings about the happiness of the devotees of Śiva.

धन्यो यशस्य आयुष्यः स्वर्गकामार्थिनां नृणाम् ॥ अपवर्गो ह्यकामानां मुक्तानां भुक्तिमुक्तिदः ॥ ४१ ॥
dhanyo yazasya AyuSyaH svargakAmArthinAM nRNAm ॥ apavargo hyakAmAnAM muktAnAM bhuktimuktidaH ॥ 41 ॥
It is conducive to blessedness, fame, longevity to those who seek heaven. Those who are free from desires derive the benefit of salvation.

The man who repeats this mantra in purity, hears or narrates this to anyone, shall attain all desires.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ iti zrutvA vacastasya zivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ sarve devA mudaM prApurharirbrahmAdhikaM tathA ॥ 43 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words of Śiva, the great Ātman, the gods derived more pleasure than Viṣṇu and Brahmā.

sarvadevamayaM divyaM rathaM paramazobhanam॥ racayAmAsa vizvArthe vizvakarmA tadAjJayA ॥ 44 ॥
At his bidding, Viśvakarman made a splendid chariot of good features, consisting of all the gods, for the welfare of the people.
