ziva uvAca ॥ ayaM vai tripurAdhyakSa puNyavAnvartate'dhunA ॥ yatra puNyaM pravarteta na haMtavyo budhaiH kvacit ॥1॥
Śiva said: A meritorious person is the presiding ruler of the Tripuras now. He who practises meritorious deeds should not be killed by sensible persons.

jAnAmi devakaSTaM ca vibudhAssakalaM mahat॥ daityAste prabalA haMtumazakyAstu surAsuraiH ॥2॥
O gods, I know the misery of the gods completely. It is great. Those Asuras are very strong. They cannot be killed by the gods or demons.

The sons of Tāraka and Maya are equally meritorious. O sensible ones, they are invincible to all the citizens.

मित्रद्रोहं कथं जानन्करोमि रणकर्कशः ॥ सुहृद्द्रोहे महत्पापं पूर्वमुक्तं स्वयंभुवा ॥ ४ ॥
mitradrohaM kathaM jAnankaromi raNakarkazaH ॥ suhRddrohe mahatpApaM pUrvamuktaM svayaMbhuvA ॥ 4 ॥
How can I knowingly commit malicious deeds to my friends though I am hardy and powerful in battles? Even Brahmā has said that there is a great sin attending on even casual malicious actions.

brahmaghnaM ca surApe ca steye bhagnavrate tathA ॥ niSkRtirvihitA sadbhiH kRtaghne nAsti niSkRtiH ॥ 5 ॥
There are ways of atonement and amends for a brahmin slayer, a wine addict, a thief or a person who violates sacred rites. But there is no expiation for ungrateful men.

मम भक्तास्तु ते दैत्या मया वध्या कथं सुराः ॥ विचार्यतां भवद्भिश्च धर्मज्ञैरेव धर्मतः ॥ ६ ॥
mama bhaktAstu te daityA mayA vadhyA kathaM surAH ॥ vicAryatAM bhavadbhizca dharmajJaireva dharmataH ॥ 6 ॥
Those Asuras are my devotees. O Gods, how can they be slain by us? Let this aspect be thought over by you who know what is virtue. You must consider this virtuously.

तावत्ते नैव हंतव्या यावद्भक्तिकृतश्च मे ॥ तथापि विष्णवे देवा निवेद्यं कारणं त्विदम् ॥ ७ ॥
tAvatte naiva haMtavyA yAvadbhaktikRtazca me ॥ tathApi viSNave devA nivedyaM kAraNaM tvidam ॥ 7 ॥
They should not be slain as long as they continue their devotion to me. Yet, this reason may very well be intimated to Viṣṇu.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्येवं तद्वचः श्रुत्वा देवाश्शक्रपुरोगमाः ॥ न्यवेदयन् द्रुतं सर्वे ब्रह्मणे प्रथमं मुने ॥ ८ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityevaM tadvacaH zrutvA devAzzakrapurogamAH ॥ nyavedayan drutaM sarve brahmaNe prathamaM mune ॥ 8 ॥
Samtkumāra said: O sage, thus when they heard these words Indra and other gods immediately intimated this to Brahmā in the first instance.

ततो विधिं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वे देवास्सवासवाः॥ वैकुंठं प्रययुश्शीघ्रं सर्वे शोभासमन्वितम्॥९॥
tato vidhiM puraskRtya sarve devAssavAsavAH॥ vaikuMThaM prayayuzzIghraM sarve zobhAsamanvitam॥9॥
Then, with Brahmā at their head, the gods including Indra quickly went to Vaikuṇṭha in all glory.

tatra gatvA hariM dRSTvA praNemurjAtasaMbhramAH॥ tuSTuvuzca mahAbhaktyA kRtAMjalipuTAssurAH ॥2-5-3-10॥
On going there and seeing Viṣṇu, the gods bowed to him in agitation, and with their palms joined in reverence they eulogised him with great devotion.

svaduHkhakAraNaM sarvaM pUrvavattadanaMtaram ॥ nyavedayandrutaM tasmai viSNave prabhaviSNave ॥ 11 ॥
They intimated to Viṣṇu the powerful, the reasons for their misery, the earlier ones as well as the later.

devaduHkhaM tataH zrutvA dattaM ca tripurAlaye ॥ jJAtvA vrataM ca teSAM tadviSNurvacanamabravIt ॥12॥
On hearing the distress of the gods as well as the vows observed by the Tripuras, Viṣṇu spoke as follows.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ इदं सत्यं वचश्चैव यत्र धर्मस्सनातनः ॥ तत्र दुःखं न जायेत सूर्ये दृष्टे यथा तमः ॥१३॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ idaM satyaM vacazcaiva yatra dharmassanAtanaH ॥ tatra duHkhaM na jAyeta sUrye dRSTe yathA tamaH ॥13॥
Viṣṇu said: This is true that where the eternal virtue reigns supreme, no misery raises its head like darkness when the sun is seen.

॥ सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्येतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा देवा दुःखमुपागताः ॥ पुनरूचुस्तथा विष्णुं परिम्लानमुखाम्बुजाः ॥ १४ ॥
॥ sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityetadvacanaM zrutvA devA duHkhamupAgatAH ॥ punarUcustathA viSNuM parimlAnamukhAmbujAH ॥ 14 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing these words the gods became miserable and dejected. They spoke to Viṣṇu with their lotus-like faces depressed.

देवा ऊचुः ॥ कथं चैव प्रकर्त्तव्यं कथं दुःखं निरस्यते॥ कथं भवेम सुखिनः कथं स्थास्यामहे वयम् ॥ १५ ॥
devA UcuH ॥ kathaM caiva prakarttavyaM kathaM duHkhaM nirasyate॥ kathaM bhavema sukhinaH kathaM sthAsyAmahe vayam ॥ 15 ॥
The gods said: How are we to go about our activities. How can our misery be dispelled? How can we be happy? How are we to remain firm?

कथं धर्मा भविष्यंति त्रिपुरे जीविते सति ॥ देवदुःखप्रदा नूनं सर्वे त्रिपुरवासिनः ॥ १६ ॥
kathaM dharmA bhaviSyaMti tripure jIvite sati ॥ devaduHkhapradA nUnaM sarve tripuravAsinaH ॥ 16 ॥
As long as the Tripuras are alive, how can we observe virtuous activities? All the residents of the three cities give troubles to us.

किं वा ते त्रिपुरस्येह वधश्चैव विधीयताम् ॥ नोचेदकालिकी देवसंहतिः क्रियतां ध्रुवम् ॥ १७ ॥
kiM vA te tripurasyeha vadhazcaiva vidhIyatAm ॥ nocedakAlikI devasaMhatiH kriyatAM dhruvam ॥ 17 ॥
What else can we say to you? Either the annihilation of the Tripuras shall be made or the untimely destruction of the gods shall be proceeded with.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा ते तदा देवा दुःखं कृत्वा पुनः पुनः ॥ स्थितिं नैव गतिं ते वै चक्रुर्देववरादिह ॥ १८ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ityuktvA te tadA devA duHkhaM kRtvA punaH punaH ॥ sthitiM naiva gatiM te vai cakrurdevavarAdiha ॥ 18 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: After saying this and lamenting frequently, the gods were in a fix and could neither stay nor leave the proximity of Viṣṇu.

तान्वै तथाविधान्दृष्ट्वा हीनान्विनयसंयुतान् ॥ सोपि नारायणः श्रीमांश्चिंतयेच्चेतसा तथा॥१९॥
tAnvai tathAvidhAndRSTvA hInAnvinayasaMyutAn ॥ sopi nArAyaNaH zrImAMzciMtayeccetasA tathA॥19॥
On seeing them in that plight, distressed and humiliated, Viṣṇu thought within himself, “I am the benefactor of the gods.

किं कार्यं देवकार्येषु मया देवसहा यिना ॥ शिवभक्तास्तु ते दैत्यास्तारकस्य सुता इति॥2-5-3-२०॥
kiM kAryaM devakAryeSu mayA devasahA yinA ॥ zivabhaktAstu te daityAstArakasya sutA iti॥2-5-3-20॥
But what can I do in this affair? The sons of Tāraka are the devotees of Śiva.

इति संचिन्त्य तत्काले विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ॥ ततो यज्ञास्स्मृतास्तेन देवकार्यार्थमक्षयाः ॥ २१ ॥
iti saMcintya tatkAle viSNunA prabhaviSNunA ॥ tato yajJAssmRtAstena devakAryArthamakSayAH ॥ 21 ॥
After thinking like this, he thought upon the Supreme Viṣṇu, the lord of sacrifices, the primordial Puruṣa.

तद्विष्णुस्मृतिमात्रेण यज्ञास्ते तत्क्षणं द्रुतम् ॥ आगतास्तत्र यत्रास्ते श्रीपतिः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥ २२ ॥
tadviSNusmRtimAtreNa yajJAste tatkSaNaM drutam ॥ AgatAstatra yatrAste zrIpatiH puruSottamaH ॥ 22 ॥
Immediately on being thought upon by Viṣṇu all the sacrifices came where Viṣṇu was stationed.

ततो विष्णुं यज्ञपतिं पुराणं पुरुषं हरिम् ॥ प्रणम्य तुष्टुवुस्ते वै कृतांजलिपुटास्तदा ॥२३॥
tato viSNuM yajJapatiM purANaM puruSaM harim ॥ praNamya tuSTuvuste vai kRtAMjalipuTAstadA ॥23॥
With palms joined in reverence they bowed to and eulogised Viṣṇu, the lord of sacrifices and the primordial Puruṣa.

भगवानपि तान्दृष्ट्वा यज्ञान्प्राह सनातनम् ॥ सनातनस्तदा सेंद्रान्देवानालोक्य चाच्युतः ॥ २४ ॥
bhagavAnapi tAndRSTvA yajJAnprAha sanAtanam ॥ sanAtanastadA seMdrAndevAnAlokya cAcyutaH ॥ 24 ॥
The eternal lord Viṣṇu saw the eternal sacrifices and told them looking at the gods too including Indra.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ अनेनैव सदा देवा यजध्वं परमेश्वरम् ॥ पुरत्रयविनाशाय जगत्त्रयविभूतये ॥२५॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ anenaiva sadA devA yajadhvaM paramezvaram ॥ puratrayavinAzAya jagattrayavibhUtaye ॥25॥
Viṣṇu said: In order to destroy the three cities and to bring about prosperity in the three worlds, O gods perform the worship of lord Śiva along with the lord of sacrifices.

सनत्कुमार उवाच॥ अच्युतस्य वचः श्रुत्वा देवदेवस्य धीमतः ॥ प्रेम्णा ते प्रणतिं कृत्वा यज्ञेशं तेऽस्तुवन्सुराः ॥२६॥
sanatkumAra uvAca॥ acyutasya vacaH zrutvA devadevasya dhImataH ॥ premNA te praNatiM kRtvA yajJezaM te'stuvansurAH ॥26॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing the words of Viṣṇu, the intelligent lord of the gods and bowing to him lovingly, the gods eulogised the lord of sacrifices.

एवं स्तुत्वा ततो देवा अजयन्यज्ञपूरुषम् ॥ यज्ञोक्तेन विधानेन संपूर्णविधयो मुने ॥ २७ ॥
evaM stutvA tato devA ajayanyajJapUruSam ॥ yajJoktena vidhAnena saMpUrNavidhayo mune ॥ 27 ॥
O sage, eulogising thus, the gods worshipped the Sacrificial Being in accordance with the rules governing the same with the complete rites.

ततस्तस्माद्यज्ञकुंडात्समुत्पेतुस्सहस्रशः ॥ भूतसंघा महाकायाः शूलशक्तिगदायुधाः ॥२८॥
tatastasmAdyajJakuMDAtsamutpetussahasrazaH ॥ bhUtasaMghA mahAkAyAH zUlazaktigadAyudhAH ॥28॥
Then from the sacrificial pit rose up thousands of Bhūtas of huge size and armed with tridents, spears, iron clubs and other weapons.

ददृशुस्ते सुरास्तान् वै भूतसंघान्सहस्रशः ॥ शूल शक्तिगदाहस्तान्दण्डचापशिलायुधान्॥२९॥
dadRzuste surAstAn vai bhUtasaMghAnsahasrazaH ॥ zUla zaktigadAhastAndaNDacApazilAyudhAn॥29॥
The gods saw thousands of Bhūtasaṅghas armed with tridents and spears and possessing various weapons such as staffs, bows, stones, etc. They had various missiles to strike with.

नानाप्रहरणोपेतान् नानावेषधराँस्तथा॥ कालाग्निरुद्रसदृशान्कालसूर्योपमाँस्तदा॥2-5-3-३०॥
nAnApraharaNopetAn nAnAveSadharA~stathA॥ kAlAgnirudrasadRzAnkAlasUryopamA~stadA॥2-5-3-30॥
They were in different guises. They resembled the destructive fire and Rudra. They were on a par with the destructive Sun.

दृष्ट्वा तानब्रवीद्विष्णुः प्रणिपत्य पुरःस्थितान् ॥ भूतान्यज्ञपतिः श्रीमानुद्राज्ञाप्रतिपालकः ॥ ३१ ॥
dRSTvA tAnabravIdviSNuH praNipatya puraHsthitAn ॥ bhUtAnyajJapatiH zrImAnudrAjJApratipAlakaH ॥ 31 ॥
When they bowed to him and stood waiting in front, Viṣṇu saw them. The glorious lord of sacrifices who carried out the behests of Rudra, spoke to them.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ भूताः शृणुत मद्वाक्यं देवकार्यार्थमुद्यताः ॥ गच्छन्तु त्रिपुरं सद्यस्सर्वे हि बलवत्तराः ॥ ३२ ॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ bhUtAH zRNuta madvAkyaM devakAryArthamudyatAH ॥ gacchantu tripuraM sadyassarve hi balavattarAH ॥ 32 ॥
Viṣṇu said—“O Bhūtas, listen to my statement. You are all very powerful and have risen up for fulfilling the task of the gods. All of you go immediately to the three cities.

गत्वा दग्ध्वा च भित्त्वा च भङ्क्त्वा दैत्यपुरत्रयम् ॥ पुनर्यथागता भूतागंतुमर्हथ भूतये ॥३३॥
gatvA dagdhvA ca bhittvA ca bhaGktvA daityapuratrayam ॥ punaryathAgatA bhUtAgaMtumarhatha bhUtaye ॥33॥
Go there, strike at, break and burn the three cities of the Asuras. O Bhūtas, thereafter you can go away as you please for prosperity.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवद्वाक्यं ततो भूतगणाश्च ते ॥ प्रणम्य देवदेवं तं ययुर्दैत्यपुरत्रयम् ॥३४॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ tacchrutvA bhagavadvAkyaM tato bhUtagaNAzca te ॥ praNamya devadevaM taM yayurdaityapuratrayam ॥34॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing the words of the lord, the hosts of Bhūtas bowed to the lord of the gods and went to the three cities of the Asuras.

गत्वा तत्प्रविशंतश्च त्रिपुराधिपतेजसि ॥ भस्मसादभवन्सद्यश्शलभा इव पावके ॥३५॥
gatvA tatpravizaMtazca tripurAdhipatejasi ॥ bhasmasAdabhavansadyazzalabhA iva pAvake ॥35॥
Immediately after their entry into the cities they were reduced to ashes like moths in the fire.

अवशिष्टाश्च ये केचित्पलायनपरायणाः ॥ निस्सृत्यारं समायाता हरेर्निकटमाकुलाः ॥३६॥
avaziSTAzca ye kecitpalAyanaparAyaNAH ॥ nissRtyAraM samAyAtA harernikaTamAkulAH ॥36॥
Those who escaped fled out of the cities and came grief-stricken to Viṣṇu.

tAndRSTvA sa hariH zrutvA tacca vRttamazeSataH॥ ciMtayAmAsa bhagavAnmanasA puruSottamaH ॥ 37 ॥
On seeing them and hearing the incidents in detail, lord Viṣṇu pondered over this.

किं कृत्यमधुना कार्यमिति संतप्तमानसः ॥ संतप्तानमरान्सर्वानाज्ञाय च सवासवान् ॥ ३८ ॥
kiM kRtyamadhunA kAryamiti saMtaptamAnasaH ॥ saMtaptAnamarAnsarvAnAjJAya ca savAsavAn ॥ 38 ॥
On realising that all the gods were distressed and dejected in the mind, he too was extremely grieved.

कथं तेषां च दैत्यानां बलाद्धत्वा पुरत्रयम् ॥ देवकार्यं करिष्यामीत्यासीच्चिंतासमाकुलः ॥३९॥
kathaM teSAM ca daityAnAM balAddhatvA puratrayam ॥ devakAryaM kariSyAmItyAsIcciMtAsamAkulaH ॥39॥
He became much worried at the thought “How can I destroy the three cities of the Asuras, with force and carry out the task of the gods?”

नाशोऽभिचारतो नास्ति धर्मिष्ठानां न संशयः ॥ इति प्राह स्वयं चेशः श्रुत्याचारप्रमाणकृत् ॥ 2-5-3-४० ॥

O good gods, these Asuras and the other residents of the three cities are virtuous. Hence they have become invincible. Not in any other manner.

After perpetrating great sins they worship Śiva and so they are freed of all sins even as the leaves of the lotus from water.

O gods, thanks to the worship of Śiva, their cherished desires are realised. Different means of enjoyment in the world are brought under their control.

Then putting obstacles in their activities of virtuous rites, by means of magic art I shall destroy the three cities of the Asuras quickly for accomplishing the task of the Asuras.

After thinking thus, lord Viṣṇu set himself to the task of interfering with the sacred rites of the Asuras.

yAvacca veda dharmAstu yAvadvai zaMkarArcanam ॥ yAvacca zucikRtyAdi tAvannAzo bhavenna hi ॥ 47॥
As long as the worship of Śiva is continued and as long as the pure activities are strictly adhered to, there is no question of their ruin at all.

tasmAdevaM prakartavyaM vedadharmastato vrajet ॥ tyaktaliMgArcanA daityA bhaviSyaMti na saMzayaH ॥ 48 ॥
Hence such means shall be followed as will make Vedic Dharma disappear thence. Undoubtedly the Asuras will foresake their worship of the phallic emblem of Siva.

Deciding thus, Viṣṇu started ridiculing the Vedas for putting up obstacles in the virtuous activities of the Asuras.

At the bidding of Śiva, Viṣṇu who was commanded to protect the three worlds, and who renders help to the gods spoke to them.

Viṣṇu said: O gods, you go to your own abodes. Undoubtedly I shall carry on the task of the gods to the extent of my intellect.

tAnrudrAdvimukhAnnUnaM kariSyAmi suyatnataH ॥ svabhaktirahitAJjJAtvA tAnkariSyati bhasmasAt ॥ 52 ॥
Strenuously I shall make them averse to Śiva. Coming to know that they are devoid of devotion to him he will reduce them to ashes.

॥ sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ tadAjJAM zirasAdhAyazvAsitAste'marA mune ॥ svasvadhAmAni vizvastA yayurbrahmApi moditAH ॥ 53 ॥
Sanatkumāra said: O sage, accepting his behest with bent head, the gods and Brahmā felt satisfied and with faith in their hearts returned to their abodes.

Thereafter Viṣṇu performed deeds conducive to the welfare of the gods. Listen to those excellent deeds destructive of all sins.
