nArada uvAca ॥ brahman vada mahAprAjJa tadvRttAntekhile zrute ॥ kimakArSInmahAdevI zrotumicchAmi tattvataH ॥ 1 ॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, of great intellect, please narrate. When the entire news was heard what did the great goddess Pārvatī do? I wish to hear all in fact.

brahmovAca ॥ zrUyatAM munizArdUla kathayAmyadya taddhruvam ॥ caritaM jagadaMbAyA yajjAtaM tadanaMtaram ॥2॥
Brahmā said: O foremost among sages, listen. I shall mention the story of the mother of the universe in the manner that it happened afterwards.

mRdaMgAnpaTahAMzcaiva gaNAzcAvAdayaMstathA ॥ mahotsavaM tadA cakrurhate tasmingaNAdhipe ॥3॥
When Gaṇeśa was killed, the Gaṇas were very jubilant. They played on Mṛdaṅgas and Paṭahas.

zivopi tacchirazchitvA yAvadduHkhamupAdade ॥ tAvacca girijA devI cukrodhAti munIzvara ॥ 4 ॥
After cutting off the head of Gaṇeśa even as Śiva became sorry, goddess Pārvatī became furious, O great sage.

kiM karomi kva gacchAmi hAhAduHkhamupAgatam ॥ kathaM duHkhaM vinazyetAsyA'tidukhaM mamAdhunA ॥ 5 ॥
O what shall I do? Where shall I go? Alas, great misery has befallen me. How can this misery, this great misery be dispelled now?

matsuto nAzitazcAdya devessarvairgaNaistathA ॥ sarvAMstAnnAzayiSyAmi pralayaM vA karomyaham ॥ 6 ॥
My son has been killed by all the gods and the Gaṇas. I shall destroy them all or create a deluge.

ityevaM duHkhitA sA ca zaktIzzatasahasrazaH ॥ nirmame tatkSaNaM kruddhA sarvalokamahezvarI ॥7॥
Lamenting thus, the great goddess of all the worlds angrily created in a moment hundreds and thousands of Śaktis.

nirmitAstA namaskRtya jagadaMbAM zivAM tadA ॥ jAjvalyamAnA hyavadanmAtarAdizyatAmiti ॥ 8 ॥
Śaktis who were thus created, bowed to Pārvatī, the mother of the universe and blazing brilliantly spoke—“O mother, be pleased to command.”

tacchutvA zaMbhuzaktissA prakRtiH krodhatatparA ॥ pratyuvAca tu tAssarvA mahAmAyA munIzvara ॥ 9 ॥
O great sage, on hearing that, Pārvatī, the Śakti of Śiva, the Prakṛti, the great Māyā, spoke to them all in great fury.

देव्युवाच ॥ हे शक्तयोऽधुना देव्यो युष्माभिर्मन्निदेशतः ॥ प्रलयश्चात्र कर्त्तव्यो नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥ 2-4-17-१० ॥
devyuvAca ॥ he zaktayo'dhunA devyo yuSmAbhirmannidezataH ॥ pralayazcAtra karttavyo nAtra kAryA vicAraNA ॥ 2-4-17-10 ॥
The goddess said: O Śaktis, O goddesses, now a great deluge shall be created by you at my bidding. You need not hesitate in this regard.

devAMzcaiva RSIMzcaiva yakSarAkSasakAMstathA ॥ asmadIyAnparAMzcaiva sakhyo bhakSata vai haThAt ॥11॥
O friends, devour forcibly all these sages, gods, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas belonging to us and others.

brahmovAca ॥ tadAjJaptAzca tAssarvAzzaktayaH krodhatatparAH ॥ devAdInAM ca sarveSAM saMhAraM kartumudyatAH ॥ 12 ॥
Brahmā said: On being commanded by her, the infuriated Śaktis got ready to destroy the gods and others.

यथा च तृणसंहारमनलः कुरुते तथा ॥ एवं ताश्शक्तयस्सर्वास्संहारं कर्तुमुद्यताः ॥१३॥
yathA ca tRNasaMhAramanalaH kurute tathA ॥ evaM tAzzaktayassarvAssaMhAraM kartumudyatAH ॥13॥
Just as the fire consumes dry grass so also these Śaktis attempted to destroy.

गणपो वाथ विष्णुर्वा ब्रह्मा वा शंकरस्तथा ॥ इन्द्रो वा यक्षराजो वा स्कंदो वा सूर्य एव वा ॥१४॥
gaNapo vAtha viSNurvA brahmA vA zaMkarastathA ॥ indro vA yakSarAjo vA skaMdo vA sUrya eva vA ॥14॥
Whether it is Gaṇapati, or Viṣṇu, or Brahmā, or Śaṅkara (Śiva), or Indra, or the king of the Yakṣas, or Skanda, or even Sūrya (the Sun god).

सर्वेषां चैव संहारं कुर्वंति स्म निरंतरम् ॥ यत्रयत्र तु दृश्येत तत्रतत्रापि शक्तयः ॥१५॥
sarveSAM caiva saMhAraM kurvaMti sma niraMtaram ॥ yatrayatra tu dRzyeta tatratatrApi zaktayaH ॥15॥
They continuously carried out the destruction of all beings; wherever they appeared, the Śaktis (divine energies) were also present there.

कराली कुब्जका खंजा लंबशीर्षा ह्यनेकशः ॥ हस्ते धृत्वा तु देवांश्च मुखे चैवाक्षिपंस्तदा ॥१६॥
karAlI kubjakA khaMjA laMbazIrSA hyanekazaH ॥ haste dhRtvA tu devAMzca mukhe caivAkSipaMstadA ॥16॥
Karālīs (the Terrific), Kubjakās (the humpbacked), Khañjās (the lame), Lambaśīrṣās (the tall-headed) the innumerable Śaktis took up the gods with their hands and threw them in their own mouths.

तं संहारं तदा दृष्ट्वा हरो ब्रह्मा तथा हरिः ॥ इन्द्रादयोऽखिलाः देवा गणाश्च ऋषयस्तथा ॥ १७ ॥
taM saMhAraM tadA dRSTvA haro brahmA tathA hariH ॥ indrAdayo'khilAH devA gaNAzca RSayastathA ॥ 17 ॥
On seeing that Śiva, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Indra, the other gods, Gaṇas and the sages began to doubt what the Goddess Pārvatī would be doing, whether she would create an untimely dissolution.

किं करिष्यति सा देवी संहारं वाप्यकालतः ॥ इति संशयमापन्ना जीवनाशा हताऽभवत् ॥ १८ ॥
kiM kariSyati sA devI saMhAraM vApyakAlataH ॥ iti saMzayamApannA jIvanAzA hatA'bhavat ॥ 18 ॥
What will that Goddess do—will she bring destruction now or later? Thus falling into doubt, all hope for life was destroyed.

सर्वे च मिलिताश्चेमे कि कर्त्तव्यं विचिंत्यताम् ॥ एवं विचारयन्तस्ते तूर्णमूचुः परस्परम् ॥१९॥
sarve ca militAzceme ki karttavyaM viciMtyatAm ॥ evaM vicArayantaste tUrNamUcuH parasparam ॥19॥
They all gathered together and discussed—“What shall be done now? Let us ponder.” Discussing thus they spoke to one another.

यदा च गिरिजा देवी प्रसन्ना हि भवेदिह ॥ तदा चैव भवेत्स्वास्थ्यं नान्यथा कोटियत्नतः ॥ 2-4-17-२० ॥
yadA ca girijA devI prasannA hi bhavediha ॥ tadA caiva bhavetsvAsthyaM nAnyathA koTiyatnataH ॥ 2-4-17-20 ॥
Only when the goddess Pārvatī is pleased can there be a relief; not otherwise, even with our maximum efforts.

शिवोपि दुःखमापन्नो लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः ॥ मोहयन्सकलांस्तत्र नानालीलाविशारदः ॥२१॥
zivopi duHkhamApanno laukikIM gatimAzritaH ॥ mohayansakalAMstatra nAnAlIlAvizAradaH ॥21॥
Even Śiva who is an expert in different sports and is deluding us all, seems distressed like an ordinary man.

सर्वेषां चैव देवानां कटिर्भग्ना यदा तदा ॥ शिवा क्रोधमयी साक्षाद्गंतुं न पुर उत्सहेत् ॥। २२ ॥
sarveSAM caiva devAnAM kaTirbhagnA yadA tadA ॥ zivA krodhamayI sAkSAdgaMtuM na pura utsahet ॥। 22 ॥
When the hips of all the gods are broken and Pārvatī is fiery in rage, none of them dare stand before her.

स्वीयो वा परकीयो वा देवो वा दानवोपि वा ॥ गणो वापि च दिक्पालो यक्षो वा किन्नरो मुनिः ॥ २३ ॥
svIyo vA parakIyo vA devo vA dAnavopi vA ॥ gaNo vApi ca dikpAlo yakSo vA kinnaro muniH ॥ 23 ॥
Whether a person belonging to her or to others, whether a god, a demon, a Gaṇa, a guardian of the quarters, a Yakṣa, a Kinnara, a Sage, Brahmā, Viṣṇu or even lord Śiva himself, none could stand before Śiva.

विष्णुर्वापि तथा ब्रह्मा शंकरश्च तथा प्रभुः ॥ न कश्चिद्गिरिजाग्रे च स्थातुं शक्तोऽभवन्मुने ॥२४॥
viSNurvApi tathA brahmA zaMkarazca tathA prabhuH ॥ na kazcidgirijAgre ca sthAtuM zakto'bhavanmune ॥24॥
Neither Viṣṇu, nor Brahmā, nor even the mighty Śaṅkara himself, O Sage, was able to stand before Girijā (Pārvatī).

जाज्वल्यमानं तत्तेजस्सर्वतोदाहि तेऽखिलाः ॥ दृष्ट्वा भीततरा आसन् सर्वे दूरतरं स्थिताः ॥२५॥
jAjvalyamAnaM tattejassarvatodAhi te'khilAH ॥ dRSTvA bhItatarA Asan sarve dUrataraM sthitAH ॥25॥
On seeing her dazzling brilliance, burning all round, all of them were frightened and they stayed far away.

एतस्मिन्समये तत्र नारदो दिव्यदर्शनः ॥ आगतस्त्वं मुने देवगणानां सुखहेतवे ॥२६॥
etasminsamaye tatra nArado divyadarzanaH ॥ AgatastvaM mune devagaNAnAM sukhahetave ॥26॥
In the meantime, O sage Nārada, you of divine vision came there for the happiness of the gods and Gaṇas.

ब्रह्माणं मां भवं विष्णुं शंकरं च प्रणम्य साः ॥ समागत्य मिलित्वोचे विचार्य कार्यमेव वा ॥२७॥
brahmANaM mAM bhavaM viSNuM zaMkaraM ca praNamya sAH ॥ samAgatya militvoce vicArya kAryameva vA ॥27॥
After bowing to me, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva and discussing jointly, he said—“Let us think and act together.”

सर्वे संमंत्रयां चक्रुस्त्वया देवा महात्मना ॥ दुःखशांतिः कथं स्याद्वै समूचुस्तत एव ते ॥२८॥
sarve saMmaMtrayAM cakrustvayA devA mahAtmanA ॥ duHkhazAMtiH kathaM syAdvai samUcustata eva te ॥28॥
The gods then discussed with you of noble soul “How could our misery be quelled.” They then said.

यावच्च गिरिजा देवी कृपां नैव करिष्यति॥ तावन्नैव सुखं स्याद्वै नात्र कार्या विचारणा॥२९॥
yAvacca girijA devI kRpAM naiva kariSyati॥ tAvannaiva sukhaM syAdvai nAtra kAryA vicAraNA॥29॥
As long as the goddess Pārvatī does not favour us there will be no happiness. No suspicion need be entertained in this matter.

ऋषयो हि त्वदाद्याश्च गतास्ते वै शिवान्तिकम्॥ सर्वे प्रसादयामासुः क्रोधशान्त्यै तदा शिवाम् ॥2-4-17-३०॥
RSayo hi tvadAdyAzca gatAste vai zivAntikam॥ sarve prasAdayAmAsuH krodhazAntyai tadA zivAm ॥2-4-17-30॥
You and other sages went to Pārvatī in order to appease her anger. They then propitiated her.

पुनः पुनः प्रणेमुश्च स्तुत्वा स्तोत्रैरनेकशः ॥ सर्वे प्रसादयन्प्रीत्या प्रोचुर्देवगणाज्ञया॥३१॥
punaH punaH praNemuzca stutvA stotrairanekazaH ॥ sarve prasAdayanprItyA procurdevagaNAjJayA॥31॥
They bowed to her again and again. They eulogised her with many hymns. They tried to please her with devotion and at the behest of the gods and Gaṇas spoke thus.

सुरर्षय ऊचुः ॥ जगदम्ब नमस्तुभ्यं शिवायै ते नमोस्तु ते ॥ चंडिकायै नमस्तुभ्यं कल्याण्यै ते नमोस्तु ते ॥३२॥
surarSaya UcuH ॥ jagadamba namastubhyaM zivAyai te namostu te ॥ caMDikAyai namastubhyaM kalyANyai te namostu te ॥32॥
The celestial sages said: O Mother of the universe, obeisance to you. Obeisance to you, O Śivā. Obeisance to you. O Caṇḍikā. Obeisance to you, Kalyāṇī.

आदिशक्तिस्त्वमेवांब सर्वसृष्टिकरी सदा॥ त्वमेव पालिनी शक्तिस्त्वमेव प्रलयंकरी ॥३३॥
AdizaktistvamevAMba sarvasRSTikarI sadA॥ tvameva pAlinI zaktistvameva pralayaMkarI ॥33॥
O mother, you alone are the primordial Śakti. You are the eternal cause of creation. You alone are the sustaining power. You alone are the cause of dissolution.

प्रसन्ना भव देवेशि शांतिं कुरु नमोस्तु ते॥ सर्वं हि विकलं देवि त्रिजगत्तव कोपतः॥३४॥
prasannA bhava devezi zAMtiM kuru namostu te॥ sarvaM hi vikalaM devi trijagattava kopataH॥34॥
O goddess, be pleased. Spread peace. Obeisance be to you. O goddess, the three worlds are agitated by your fury.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ एवं स्तुता परा देवी ऋषिभिश्च त्वदादिभिः ॥ क्रुद्धदृष्ट्या तदा ताश्च किंचिन्नोवाच सा शिवा ॥३५॥
brahmovAca ॥ evaM stutA parA devI RSibhizca tvadAdibhiH ॥ kruddhadRSTyA tadA tAzca kiMcinnovAca sA zivA ॥35॥
Brahmā said: The great goddess Pārvatī thus eulogised by you and other sages glanced at them furiously. She did not say anything.

तदा च ऋषयस्सर्वे नत्वा तच्चरणांबुजम् ॥ पुनरूचुश्शिवां भक्त्या कृतांजलिपुटाश्शनैः ॥ ३६ ॥
tadA ca RSayassarve natvA taccaraNAMbujam ॥ punarUcuzzivAM bhaktyA kRtAMjalipuTAzzanaiH ॥ 36 ॥
Then the sages bowed at her lotus like feet and spoke to her in low voice with devotion joining their palms in reverence.

ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ क्षम्यतां देवि संहारो जाय तेऽधुना ॥ तव स्वामी स्थितश्चात्र पश्य पश्य तमंबिके ॥३७॥
RSaya UcuH ॥ kSamyatAM devi saMhAro jAya te'dhunA ॥ tava svAmI sthitazcAtra pazya pazya tamaMbike ॥37॥
The sages said: O goddess, forgive, forgive. The final dissolution seems near at hand. Your lord is standing here. O mother, you see him.

vayaM ke ca ime devA viSNubrahmAdayastathA ॥ prajAzca bhavadIyAzca kRtAMjalipuTAH sthitAH ॥38॥
What are we, the gods, Viṣṇu, Brahmā and others? We are only your subjects. We stand here with palms joined in reverence.

kSaMtavyazcAparAdho vai sarveSAM paramezvari ॥ sarve hi vikalAzcAdya zAMtiM teSAM zive kuru ॥ 39 ॥
O great goddess, our guilts shall be forgiven. We are agitated and distressed. O Pārvatī give us peace.

Brahmā said: After saying this, the agitated and distressed sages stood in front of her with palms joined in reverence.
