Brahmā said: O Nārada, on hearing your words, the great lord who grants benediction to his devotees became desirous of fighting with the boy.

viSNumAhUya saMmaMtrya balena mahatA yutaH ॥ sAmarassammukhastasyApyabhUddevastrilocanaH ॥ 2 ॥
He called Viṣṇu and consulted him. Then with a great army and the gods, He, the three-eyed lord, stood face to face with him.

After remembering the lotuslike feet of Śiva, the gods possessing great strength, kindly glanced at by Śiva and highly jubilant, fought with him.

Viṣṇu of great strength, valour and skill and possessing great divine weapons and Śiva’s form fought with him.

yaSTyA gaNAdhipassotha jaghAnAmarapuGgavAn॥ hariM ca sahasA vIrazzaktidattamahAbalaH ॥ 5 ॥
Gaṇeśa hit all the chief gods with his staff. He hit Viṣṇu too, all of a sudden. The hero had been conferred great strength by the Śaktis.

सर्वेऽमरगणास्तत्र विकुंठितबला मुने ॥ अभूवन् विष्णुना तेन हता यष्ट्या पराङ्मुखाः ॥ ६ ॥
sarve'maragaNAstatra vikuMThitabalA mune ॥ abhUvan viSNunA tena hatA yaSTyA parAGmukhAH ॥ 6 ॥
O sage, all the gods including Viṣṇu were hit by him with the stick. They were turned back with their strength sapped.

zivopi saha sainyena yuddhaM kRtvA ciraM mune ॥ vikarAlaM ca taM dRSTvA vismayaM paramaM gataH ॥7॥
O sage, after fighting for a long time along with the army and seeing him terrific, even Śiva was greatly surprised.

छलेनैव च हंतव्यो नान्यथा हन्यते पुनः ॥ इति बुद्धिं समास्थाय सैन्यमध्ये व्यवस्थितः॥ ८॥
chalenaiva ca haMtavyo nAnyathA hanyate punaH ॥ iti buddhiM samAsthAya sainyamadhye vyavasthitaH॥ 8॥
Thinking within himself “He has to be killed only by deception and not otherwise” he stayed in the midst of the army.

शिवे दृष्टे तदा देवे निर्गुणे गुणरूपिणि॥ विष्णौ चैवाथ संग्रामे आयाते सर्वदेवताः॥९॥
zive dRSTe tadA deve nirguNe guNarUpiNi॥ viSNau caivAtha saMgrAme AyAte sarvadevatAH॥9॥
When lord Śiva who though devoid of attributes had assumed the attributive form was seen in the battle, when Viṣṇu too had come thither, the gods and Gaṇas of Śiva were highly delighted.

गणाश्चैव महेशस्य महाहर्षं तदा ययुः॥ सर्वे परस्परं प्रीत्या मिलित्वा चक्रुरुत्सवम्॥2-4-16-१०॥
gaNAzcaiva mahezasya mahAharSaM tadA yayuH॥ sarve parasparaM prItyA militvA cakrurutsavam॥2-4-16-10॥
At that time, the Gaṇas of Mahesha (Lord Shiva) were filled with great joy. All of them, coming together with mutual affection, celebrated a grand festival.

अथ शक्तिसुतो वीरो वीरगत्या स्वयष्टितः ॥ प्रथम पूजयामास विष्णुं सर्वसुखावहम् ॥ ११ ॥
atha zaktisuto vIro vIragatyA svayaSTitaH ॥ prathama pUjayAmAsa viSNuM sarvasukhAvaham ॥ 11 ॥
Then Gaṇeśa the heroic son of Śakti following the course of heroes, at first worshipped (i.e struck) Viṣṇu with his staff, Viṣṇu who confers happiness to all.

अहं च मोहयिष्यामि हन्यतां च त्वया विभो ॥ छलं विना न वध्योऽयं तामसोयं दुरासदः ॥१२॥
ahaM ca mohayiSyAmi hanyatAM ca tvayA vibho ॥ chalaM vinA na vadhyo'yaM tAmasoyaM durAsadaH ॥12॥
I shall cause him delusion. Then let him be killed by you, O lord. Without deception he cannot be killed. He is of Tāmasika nature and inaccessible.

iti kRtvA matiM tatra susaMmaMtrya ca zaMbhunA ॥ AjJAM prApyA'bhavacchaivI viSNurmohaparAyaNaH॥13॥
hinking thus and consulting Śiva, Viṣṇu secured Śiva’s permission and was engaged in the activities of delusion.

शक्तिद्वयं तथा लीनं हरिं दृष्ट्वा तथाविधम् ॥ दत्त्वा शक्तिबलं तस्मै गणेशायाभवन्मुने॥१४॥
zaktidvayaM tathA lInaM hariM dRSTvA tathAvidham ॥ dattvA zaktibalaM tasmai gaNezAyAbhavanmune॥14॥
O sage, on seeing Viṣṇu in that manner, the two Śaktis handed over their power to Gaṇeśa and became submerged.

शक्तिद्वयेऽथ संलीने यत्र विष्णुः स्थितस्स्वयम् ॥ परिघं क्षिप्तवांस्तत्र गणेशो बलवत्तरः॥१५॥
zaktidvaye'tha saMlIne yatra viSNuH sthitassvayam ॥ parighaM kSiptavAMstatra gaNezo balavattaraH॥15॥
When the two Śaktis became submerged, Gaṇeśa with more strength infused in him hurled the iron club in the place where Viṣṇu stood.

कृत्वा यत्नं किमप्यत्र वंचयामास तद्गतिम्॥ शिवं स्मृत्वा महेशानं स्वप्रभुं भक्तवत्सलम् ॥१६॥
kRtvA yatnaM kimapyatra vaMcayAmAsa tadgatim॥ zivaM smRtvA mahezAnaM svaprabhuM bhaktavatsalam ॥16॥
Viṣṇu strenuously dodged the same after remembering Śiva, the great lord, favourably disposed towards His devotees.

एकतस्तन्मुखं दृष्ट्वा शंकरोप्याजगाम ह ॥ स्वत्रिशूलं समादाय सुक्रुद्धो युद्धकाम्यया ॥ १७ ॥
ekatastanmukhaM dRSTvA zaMkaropyAjagAma ha ॥ svatrizUlaM samAdAya sukruddho yuddhakAmyayA ॥ 17 ॥
Seeing his face on a side, the infuriated Śiva took up his trident with a desire to fight and came there.

स ददर्शागतं शंभुं शूलह्स्तं महेश्वरम् ॥ हंतुकामं निजं वीरश्शिवापुत्रो महाबलः ॥ १८ ॥
sa dadarzAgataM zaMbhuM zUlahstaM mahezvaram ॥ haMtukAmaM nijaM vIrazzivAputro mahAbalaH ॥ 18 ॥
Pārvatī’s son of great strength and heroism, saw Śiva arrived there with desire to fight him to a finish, the great lord with the trident in his hand.

शक्त्या जघान तं हस्ते स्मृत्वा मातृपदांबुजम् ॥ स गणशो महावीरश्शिवशक्तिप्रवर्द्धितः ॥१९॥
zaktyA jaghAna taM haste smRtvA mAtRpadAMbujam ॥ sa gaNazo mahAvIrazzivazaktipravarddhitaH ॥19॥
Gaṇeśa, the great hero, who had been rendered more powerful by Pārvatī and the Śaktis remembered the lotuslike feet of his mother and struck him in his hand with his Śakti.

त्रिशूलं पतितं हस्ताच्छिवस्य परमात्मनः ॥ दृष्ट्वा सदूतिकस्तं वै पिनाकं धनुराददे ॥ 2-4-16-२० ॥
trizUlaM patitaM hastAcchivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ dRSTvA sadUtikastaM vai pinAkaM dhanurAdade ॥ 2-4-16-20 ॥
Thereupon the trident fell from the hand of Śiva of supreme soul. Seeing this, Śiva the source of great enjoyment and protection took up his bow Pināka.

तमप्यपातयद्भूमौ परिघेण गणेश्वरः ॥ हताः पंच तथा हस्ताः पञ्चभिश्शूलमाददे ॥ २१ ॥
tamapyapAtayadbhUmau parigheNa gaNezvaraH ॥ hatAH paMca tathA hastAH paJcabhizzUlamAdade ॥ 21 ॥
Gaṇeśa felled that to the ground by means of his iron club. Five of his hands too were struck. He took up the trident with the other five hands.

अहो दुःखतरं नूनं संजातमधुना मम ॥ भवेत्पुनर्गणानां किं भवाचारी जगाविति ॥२२॥
aho duHkhataraM nUnaM saMjAtamadhunA mama ॥ bhavetpunargaNAnAM kiM bhavAcArI jagAviti ॥22॥
Alas, this has been more distressing even to me. What may not happen to the Gaṇas? Śiva who followed the worldly conventions cried out like this.

एतस्मिन्नंतरे वीरः परिघेण गणेश्वरः ॥ जघान सगणान् देवान्शक्तिदत्तबलान्वितः ॥२३॥
etasminnaMtare vIraH parigheNa gaNezvaraH ॥ jaghAna sagaNAn devAnzaktidattabalAnvitaH ॥23॥
In the meantime the heroic Gaṇeśa endowed with the surplus power bestowed by the Śaktis struck the gods and the Gaṇas with his iron club.

viSNustaM ca gaNaM dRSTvA dhanyoyamiti cAbravIt॥ mahAbalo mahAvIro mahAzUro raNapriyaH ॥25॥
On seeing Gaṇeśa, Viṣṇu said—“He is blessed. He is a great hero of great strength. He is valorous and fond of battle. Many gods, Danavas, Daityas, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, and Rakṣasas I have seen.

bahavo devatAzcaiva mayA dRSTAstathA punaH ॥ dAnavA bahavo daityA yakSagaMdharvarAkSasAH ॥26॥
Many gods, Danavas, Daityas, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, and Rakṣasas I have seen.

naitena gaNanAthena samatAM yAMti kepi ca ॥ trailokye'pyakhile tejo rUpazauryaguNAdibhiH॥27॥
In the entire extent of the three worlds, none of them can equal Gaṇeśa in regard to brilliance, form, features, valour and other qualities.

evaM saMbruvate'muSmai parighaM bhrAmayan sa ca ॥ cikSepa viSNave tatra zaktiputro gaNezvaraH॥28॥
Gaṇeśa, son of the Śaktis whirled the iron club and hurled it at Viṣṇu even as he was saying so.

cakraM gRhItvA hariNA smRtvA zivapadAmbujam ॥ tena cakreNa parigho drutaM khaMDIkRtastadA ॥29॥
After remembering the lotus-like feet of Śiva, Viṣṇu took up his discus and split the iron club by means of discus.

khaMDaM tu parighasyApi haraye prAkSipadgaNaH॥ gRhItvA garuDenApi pakSiNA viphalIkRtaH ॥2-4-16-30॥
Gaṇeśa hurled the piece of iron club at Viṣṇu which was caught by the bird Garuḍa and rendered futile.

Thus for a long time the two heroes Viṣṇu and Gaṇeśa fought with each other.

पुनर्वीरवरश्शक्तिसुतस्स्मृतशिवो बली ॥ गृहीत्वा यष्टिमतुलां तया विष्णुं जघान ह ॥३२॥
punarvIravarazzaktisutassmRtazivo balI ॥ gRhItvA yaSTimatulAM tayA viSNuM jaghAna ha ॥32॥
Again the foremost among heroes, the son of Pārvatī took up his staff of unrivalled power remembering Śiva and struck Viṣṇu with it.

अविषह्य प्रहारं तं स भूमौ निपपात ह ॥ द्रुतमुत्थाय युयुधे शिवापुत्रेण तेन वै ॥ ३३ ॥
aviSahya prahAraM taM sa bhUmau nipapAta ha ॥ drutamutthAya yuyudhe zivAputreNa tena vai ॥ 33 ॥
Struck with that unbearable blow he fell on the ground. But he got up, quickly and fought with Pārvatī’s son.

एतदंतरमासाद्य शूलपाणिस्तथोत्तरे ॥ आगत्य च त्रिशूलेन तच्छिरो निरकृंतत ॥३४॥
etadaMtaramAsAdya zUlapANistathottare ॥ Agatya ca trizUlena tacchiro nirakRMtata ॥34॥
Securing this opportunity, the Trident-bearing deity came there and cut off his head with his trident.

chinne zirasi tasyaiva gaNanAthasya nArada ॥ gaNasainyaM devasainyamabhavacca sunizcalam॥35॥
O Nārada, when the head of Gaṇeśa was cut off, the armies of the gods and the Gaṇas stood still.

नारदेन त्वयाऽऽगत्य देव्यै सर्वं निवेदितम् ॥ मानिनि श्रूयतां मानस्त्याज्यो नैव त्वयाधुना ॥३६॥
nAradena tvayA''gatya devyai sarvaM niveditam ॥ mAnini zrUyatAM mAnastyAjyo naiva tvayAdhunA ॥36॥
You, Nārada, then came and acquainted Pārvatī with the matter—“O proud woman, listen. You shall not cast off your pride and prestige.”

इत्युक्त्वाऽन्तर्हितस्तत्र नारद त्वं कलिप्रियः ॥ अविकारी सदा शंभुर्मनोगतिकरो मुनिः ॥ ३७ ॥
ityuktvA'ntarhitastatra nArada tvaM kalipriyaH ॥ avikArI sadA zaMbhurmanogatikaro muniH ॥ 37 ॥
O Nārada, saying this, you, fond of quarrels, vanished from there. You are the unchanging sage and a follower of the inclinations of Śiva.
