॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्युक्ता विभुना तेन निश्चयं परमं गताः ॥ सन्नद्धास्तु तदा तत्र जग्मुश्च शिवमन्दिरम् ॥ १ ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityuktA vibhunA tena nizcayaM paramaM gatAH ॥ sannaddhAstu tadA tatra jagmuzca zivamandiram ॥ 1 ॥
Brahmā said: When Śiva told them thus, they came to a decisive resolution. They got ready and went to Śiva’s palace.

gaNezo'pi tathA dRSTvA hyAyAtAngaNasattamAn ॥ yuddhA''TopaM vidhAyaiva sthitAMzcaivAbravIdidam ॥2 ॥
On seeing the excellent Gaṇas, fully equipped for war, coming, Gaṇeśa spoke thus to them.

gaNeza uvAca ॥ AyAMtu gaNapAssarve zivAjJApa ripAlakAH ॥ ahamekazca bAlazca zivAjJAparipAlakaH॥3॥
Gaṇeśa said: Welcome to the leaders of Gaṇas, carrying out the behests of Śiva. I am only one and that too a mere boy carrying out the directions of Pārvatī.

तथापि पश्यतां देवी पार्वती सूनुजं बलम् ॥ शिवश्च स्वगणानां तु बलं पश्यतु वै पुनः ॥ ४ ॥
tathApi pazyatAM devI pArvatI sUnujaM balam ॥ zivazca svagaNAnAM tu balaM pazyatu vai punaH ॥ 4 ॥
Yet let the goddess see the strength of her son. Let Śiva see the strength of his Gaṇas too.

बलवद्बालयुद्धं च भवानीशिव पक्षयोः ॥ भवद्भिश्च कृतं युद्धं पूर्वं युद्धविशारदैः ॥५॥
balavadbAlayuddhaM ca bhavAnIziva pakSayoH ॥ bhavadbhizca kRtaM yuddhaM pUrvaM yuddhavizAradaiH ॥5॥
The fight between the parties of Pārvatī and Śiva is the one between a strong army and a boy. You are all experts in warfare and have fought in many a battle.

मया पूर्वं कृतं नैव बालोस्मि क्रियतेऽधुना ॥ तथापि भवतां लज्जा गिरिजाशिवयोरिह ॥६॥
mayA pUrvaM kRtaM naiva bAlosmi kriyate'dhunA ॥ tathApi bhavatAM lajjA girijAzivayoriha ॥6॥
I have never fought in a battle before. I am a mere boy. I am going to fight now. Still if you are put to shame, it will be shameful to Śiva and Pārvatī.

mamaivaM tu bhavennaiva vaiparItyaM bhaviSyati ॥ mamaiva bhavatAM lajjA girijAzivayoriha ॥ 7 ॥
But that will not happen to me. If I am put to shame, the contrary will happen to me. Pārvatī and Śiva will be put to shame but not I.

एवं ज्ञात्वा च कर्त्तव्यः समरश्च गणेश्वराः ॥ भवद्भिस्स्वामिनं दृष्ट्वा मया च मातरं तदा ॥ ८ ॥
evaM jJAtvA ca karttavyaH samarazca gaNezvarAH ॥ bhavadbhissvAminaM dRSTvA mayA ca mAtaraM tadA ॥ 8 ॥
O leader of the Gaṇas, the war shall be fought after realising this. You shall look up to your lord and I to my mother.

क्रियते कीदृशं युद्धं भवितव्यं भवत्विति ॥ तस्य वै वारणे कोऽपि न समर्थस्त्रिलोकके ॥९॥
kriyate kIdRzaM yuddhaM bhavitavyaM bhavatviti ॥ tasya vai vAraNe ko'pi na samarthastrilokake ॥9॥
What sort of a fight shall be fought? Let what is destined to occur, occur. No one in the three worlds can ward it off.

brahmovAca ॥ ityevaM bhartsitAste tu daMDabhUSitabAhavaH ॥ vividhAnyAyudhAnyevaM dhRtvA te ca samAyayuH ॥2-4-15-10॥
Brahmā said: When thus taunted and rebuked they rushed towards him with big batons, decorating their arms and taking up different kinds of weapons.

घर्षयन्तस्तथा दंतान् हुंकृत्य च पुनःपुनः॥ पश्य पश्य ब्रुवंतश्च गणास्ते समुपागताः ॥११॥
gharSayantastathA daMtAn huMkRtya ca punaHpunaH॥ pazya pazya bruvaMtazca gaNAste samupAgatAH ॥11॥
Gnashing their teeth, grunting and bellowing and calling out “See, See”, the Gaṇas rushed at him.

नंदी प्रथममागत्य धृत्वा पादं व्यकर्षयत् ॥ धावन्भृंगी द्वितीयं च पादं धृत्वा गणस्य च ॥ १२ ॥
naMdI prathamamAgatya dhRtvA pAdaM vyakarSayat ॥ dhAvanbhRMgI dvitIyaM ca pAdaM dhRtvA gaNasya ca ॥ 12 ॥
Nandin came first and caught hold of his leg. He pulled at it. Bhṛṅgin then rushed at him and caught hold of his other leg.

यावत्पादे विकर्षन्तौ तावद्धस्तेन वै गणः ॥ आहत्य हस्तयोस्ताभ्यामुत्क्षिप्तौ पादकौ स्वयम् ॥ १३ ॥
yAvatpAde vikarSantau tAvaddhastena vai gaNaH ॥ Ahatya hastayostAbhyAmutkSiptau pAdakau svayam ॥ 13 ॥
Before the Gaṇas of Śiva had time to pull his legs Gaṇeśa struck a blow at their hands and got his legs free.

अथ देवीसुतो वीरस्सगृह्य परिघं बृहत्॥ द्वारस्थितो गणपतिः सर्वानापोथयत्तदा ॥ १४ ॥
atha devIsuto vIrassagRhya parighaM bRhat॥ dvArasthito gaNapatiH sarvAnApothayattadA ॥ 14 ॥
Then seizing a big iron club and standing at the doorway he smashed the gaṇas.

केषांचित्पाणयो भिन्नाः केषांचित्पृष्ठ कानि च ॥ केषांचिच्च शिरांस्येव केषांचिन्मस्तकानि च ॥१५॥
keSAMcitpANayo bhinnAH keSAMcitpRSTha kAni ca ॥ keSAMcicca zirAMsyeva keSAMcinmastakAni ca ॥15॥
Some got their hands broken, others got their backs smothered. The heads of others were shattered and the foreheads of some were crushed.

केषांचिजानुनी तत्र केषांचित्स्कंधकास्तथा ॥ सम्मुखे चागता ये वै ते सर्वे हृदये हताः ॥१६॥
keSAMcijAnunI tatra keSAMcitskaMdhakAstathA ॥ sammukhe cAgatA ye vai te sarve hRdaye hatAH ॥16॥
The knees of some were fractured, the shoulders of others were blasted. Those who came in front were hit in the chest.

तेषां मध्ये तु कश्चिद्वै संग्रामे सम्मुखो न हि ॥ सिंहं दृष्ट्वा यथा यांति मृगाश्चैव दिशो दश ॥ १८ ॥
teSAM madhye tu kazcidvai saMgrAme sammukho na hi ॥ siMhaM dRSTvA yathA yAMti mRgAzcaiva dizo daza ॥ 18 ॥
Some fell on the ground, some fled in various directions, some got their legs broken and some fled to Śiva.

तेषां मध्ये तु कश्चिद्वै संग्रामे सम्मुखो न हि ॥ सिंहं दृष्ट्वा यथा यांति मृगाश्चैव दिशो दश ॥ १८ ॥
teSAM madhye tu kazcidvai saMgrAme sammukho na hi ॥ siMhaM dRSTvA yathA yAMti mRgAzcaiva dizo daza ॥ 18 ॥
Now none among them stood face to face. Just as deer flee to any direction on seeing a lion, the Gaṇas, who were thousands in number fled in that manner.

तथा ते च गणास्सर्वे गताश्चैव सहस्रशः॥ परावृत्य तथा सोपि सुद्वारि समुपस्थितः ॥१९॥
tathA te ca gaNAssarve gatAzcaiva sahasrazaH॥ parAvRtya tathA sopi sudvAri samupasthitaH ॥19॥
Thus, all those Gaṇas (attendants) departed by the thousands, and turning back, he too arrived at the beautiful gate.

कल्पांतकरणे कालो दृश्यते च भयंकरः ॥ यथा तथैव दृष्टस्स सर्वेषां प्रलयंकरः ॥2-4-15-२०॥
kalpAMtakaraNe kAlo dRzyate ca bhayaMkaraH ॥ yathA tathaiva dRSTassa sarveSAM pralayaMkaraH ॥2-4-15-20॥
He was seen as the annihilator of all in the manner of Yama, the terrible god of death at the end of a Kalpa.

एतस्मिन्समये चैव सरमेशसुरेश्वराः ॥ प्रेरिता नारदेनेह देवास्सर्वे समागमन् ॥२१॥
etasminsamaye caiva saramezasurezvarAH ॥ preritA nAradeneha devAssarve samAgaman ॥21॥
At this time, urged by Nārada, all the gods including Viṣṇu and Indra came there.

समब्रुवंस्तदा सर्वे शिव स्य हितकाम्यया ॥ पुरःस्थित्वा शिवं नत्वा ह्याज्ञां देहि प्रभो इति ॥२२॥
samabruvaMstadA sarve ziva sya hitakAmyayA ॥ puraHsthitvA zivaM natvA hyAjJAM dehi prabho iti ॥22॥
Standing in front of Śiva and bowing to him with a desire to secure good for him they said—“O lord, be pleased to command us.

त्वं परब्रह्म सर्वेशस्सर्वे च तव सेवकाः ॥ सृष्टेः कर्ता सदा भर्ता संहर्ता परमेश्वरः ॥२३॥
tvaM parabrahma sarvezassarve ca tava sevakAH ॥ sRSTeH kartA sadA bhartA saMhartA paramezvaraH ॥23॥
You are the great Brahman, the lord of all, the creator, the sustainer and the annihilator of all created things. All are your servants.

जस्सत्त्वतमोरूपो लीलया निर्गुणः स्वतः ॥ का लीला रचिता चाद्य तामिदानीं वद प्रभो॥२४॥
jassattvatamorUpo lIlayA nirguNaH svataH ॥ kA lIlA racitA cAdya tAmidAnIM vada prabho॥24॥
You are intrinsically devoid of attributes but by means of your sports you assume Rājasika, Sāttvika and Tāmasika forms. O lord, what sort of sport you are indulging in, now?”

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां मुनिश्रेष्ठ महेश्वरः ॥ गणान् भिन्नाँस्तदा दृष्ट्वा तेभ्यस्सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥२५॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacasteSAM munizreSTha mahezvaraH ॥ gaNAn bhinnA~stadA dRSTvA tebhyassarvaM nyavedayat ॥25॥
Brahmā said: O excellent sage, on hearing their words and seeing the Gaṇas completely shattered, lord Śiva told them everything.

अथ सर्वेश्वरस्तत्र शंकरो मुनिसत्तम ॥ विहस्य गिरिजानाथो ब्रह्माणं मामुवाच ह॥२६॥
atha sarvezvarastatra zaMkaro munisattama ॥ vihasya girijAnAtho brahmANaM mAmuvAca ha॥26॥
O excellent sage, Śiva, the lord of all, the consort of Pārvatī, then laughingly told me, Brahmā.

ziva uvAca ॥ brahmaJchRNu mama dvAri bAla ekassamAsthitaH ॥ mahAbalo yaSTipANirgehAvezanivArakaH ॥ 27 ॥
Śiva said: O Brahmā, listen. A boy is standing at the entrance to my house. He is very strong. He has a staff in his hand. He prevents me from entering the house.

महाप्रहारकर्ताऽसौ मत्पार्षदविघातकः ॥ पराजयः कृतस्तेन मद्गणानां बलादिह ॥२८॥
mahAprahArakartA'sau matpArSadavighAtakaH ॥ parAjayaH kRtastena madgaNAnAM balAdiha ॥28॥
He strikes very dexterously. He has destroyed many of my Pārṣadas. He has forcefully defeated my Gaṇas.

ब्रह्मन् त्वयैव गंतव्यं प्रसाद्योऽयं महाबलः ॥ यथा ब्रह्मन्नयः स्याद्वै तथा कार्यं त्वया विधे ॥२९॥
brahman tvayaiva gaMtavyaM prasAdyo'yaM mahAbalaH ॥ yathA brahmannayaH syAdvai tathA kAryaM tvayA vidhe ॥29॥
O Brahmā, you alone should go there. This strong boy shall be propitiated. O Brahmā, you shall do everything to bring him under control.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya prabhorvAkyamajJAtvA'jJAnamohitaH ॥ tadIyanikaTaM tAta sarvairRSivarairayAm॥2-4-15-30॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of the lord and unable to know the reality, being deluded by ignorance, O dear, I went near Gaṇeśa accompanied by the sages.

समायान्तं च मां दृष्ट्वा स गणेशो महाबली॥ क्रोधं कृत्वा समभ्येत्य मम श्मश्रूण्यवाकिरत् ॥ ३१ ॥
samAyAntaM ca mAM dRSTvA sa gaNezo mahAbalI॥ krodhaM kRtvA samabhyetya mama zmazrUNyavAkirat ॥ 31 ॥
On seeing me approaching, the powerful Gaṇeśa came to me very furiously and plucked my moustache and beard.

क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतां देव न युद्धार्थं समागतः ॥ ब्राह्मणोहमनुग्राह्यः शांतिकर्तानुपद्रवः ॥ ३२ ॥
kSamyatAM kSamyatAM deva na yuddhArthaM samAgataH ॥ brAhmaNohamanugrAhyaH zAMtikartAnupadravaH ॥ 32 ॥
Forgive me. Forgive me, O lord. I have not come for fighting. I am a brahmin and shall be blessed. I have come to make peace and I will cause no harm.

इत्येवं ब्रुवति ब्रह्मंस्तावत्परिघमाददे ॥ स गणेशो महावीरो बालोऽबालपराक्रमः ॥ ३३ ॥
ityevaM bruvati brahmaMstAvatparighamAdade ॥ sa gaNezo mahAvIro bAlo'bAlaparAkramaH ॥ 33 ॥
While I said thus, O brahmin, the heroic Gaṇeśa, the boy of great valour uncommon to the boys took up the iron club.

गृहीतपरिघं दृष्ट्वा तं गणेशं महाबलम् ॥ पलायनपरो यातस्त्वहं द्रुततरं तदा ॥३४॥
gRhItaparighaM dRSTvA taM gaNezaM mahAbalam ॥ palAyanaparo yAtastvahaM drutataraM tadA ॥34॥
On seeing the powerful Gaṇeśa seizing the iron club I began to run away immediately.

यात यात ब्रुवंतस्ते परिघेन हतास्तदा ॥ स्वयं च पतिताः केचित्केचित्तेन निपातिताः ॥३५॥
yAta yAta bruvaMtaste parighena hatAstadA ॥ svayaM ca patitAH kecitkecittena nipAtitAH ॥35॥
The others too who were shouting “Go, Go” were struck down with the iron club. Some fell themselves and some were felled by him.

केचिच्च शिवसामीप्यं गत्वा तत्क्षणमात्रतः ॥ शिवं विज्ञापयांचक्रुस्तद्वृत्तां तमशेषतः ॥३६॥
kecicca zivasAmIpyaM gatvA tatkSaNamAtrataH ॥ zivaM vijJApayAMcakrustadvRttAM tamazeSataH ॥36॥
Some of them fled to Śiva in a trice and intimated to him the details of the incident.

तथाविधांश्च तान् दृष्ट्वा तद्वृत्तांतं निशम्य सः ॥ अपारमादधे कोपं हरो लीलाविशारदः ॥३७॥
tathAvidhAMzca tAn dRSTvA tadvRttAMtaM nizamya saH ॥ apAramAdadhe kopaM haro lIlAvizAradaH ॥37॥
On seeing them in that plight and on hearing the news, Śiva, an adept in sports became very angry.

इंद्रादिकान्देवगणान् षण्मुखप्रवरान् गणान् ॥ भूतप्रेतपिशाचांश्च सर्वानादेशयत्तदा ॥३८॥
iMdrAdikAndevagaNAn SaNmukhapravarAn gaNAn ॥ bhUtapretapizAcAMzca sarvAnAdezayattadA ॥38॥
He issued directives to Indra and other gods, to the Gaṇas led by the six-faced Kumāra and to goblins, ghosts and spirits.

ते सर्वे च यथायोग्यं गतास्ते सर्वतो दिशम् ॥ तं गणं हंतुकामा हि शिवाज्ञाता उदायुधाः॥३९॥
te sarve ca yathAyogyaM gatAste sarvato dizam ॥ taM gaNaM haMtukAmA hi zivAjJAtA udAyudhAH॥39॥
At the bidding of Śiva they all desired to kill Gaṇeśa. Lifting up their weapons in a suitable manner they came there from all directions.

यस्य यस्यायुधं यच्च तत्तत्सर्वं विशेषतः॥ तद्गणेशोपरि बलात्समागत्य विमोचितम्॥2-4-15-४०॥
yasya yasyAyudhaM yacca tattatsarvaM vizeSataH॥ tadgaNezopari balAtsamAgatya vimocitam॥2-4-15-40॥
Whatever weapon they had was hurled on Gaṇeśa with force.

हाहाकारो महानासीत्त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे ॥ त्रिलोकस्था जनास्सर्वे संशयं परमं गताः ॥४१॥
hAhAkAro mahAnAsIttrailokye sacarAcare ॥ trilokasthA janAssarve saMzayaM paramaM gatAH ॥41॥
There was a great hue and cry in all the three worlds consisting of the mobile and immobile. The inhabitants of the worlds were in a great fix and uncertainty.

na yAtaM brahmaNo'pyAyurbrahmAMDa kSayameti hi ॥ akAle ca tathA nUnaM zivecchAvazataH svayam ॥42॥
Brahma’s life span is not over, but the whole universe is undergoing untimely destruction. Certainly it is due to Śiva’s wish.

The valorous sixfaced deity alone did not flee. The great warrior stopped everyone and stood in front.

But the Gaṇas fought in vain with the two Śaktis. The weapons of the gods and the Gaṇas were broken and hence withdrawn by them.

Those who went in a body to Śiva bowed to him again and again and asked Śiva immediately “O lord who is that excellent Gaṇa?”

We have heard that battles used to be fought formerly. Even now many battles are being fought. But never was such a battle seen or heard.

O lord, let this be pondered over a little. Otherwise no victory is possible. O lord, you alone are the saviour of the universe. There is no doubt about it.

By indulging in a great sport, the arrogance of the Gaṇas has been removed by you. O Śaṅkara, the impudence of the gods too has been removed by giving this (Gaṇeśa) much strength.

O lord Śiva, your own wonderful strength has been known to the worlds, you who independently remove the haughtiness of everyone.

O lord who are favourably disposed to your devotees, do not indulge in that sport. Please honour your own Gaṇas and the gods suitably and make them flourish.

O bestower of the region of Brahman, please do not treat him leisurely but kill him in your play now.” O Nārada, after saying this, you vanished from the place.
