Brahmā said: O sage, in the meantime the mountain Krauñca, harassed by Bāṇa came there and sought refuge in Kumāra.

पलायमानो यो युद्धादसोढा तेज ऐश्वरम्॥ तुतोदातीव स क्रौञ्चं कोट्यायुतबलान्वितः ॥२॥
palAyamAno yo yuddhAdasoDhA teja aizvaram॥ tutodAtIva sa krauJcaM koTyAyutabalAnvitaH ॥2॥
This Bāṇa had been fleeing from the previous battle, unable to bear the brilliance of the lord. He with the army of ten thousand persons, inflicted pain on Krauñca with the tip of his missiles.

प्रणिपत्य कुमारस्य स भक्त्या चरणाम्बुजम् ॥ प्रेमनिर्भरया वाचा तुष्टाव गुहमादरात् ॥३॥
praNipatya kumArasya sa bhaktyA caraNAmbujam ॥ premanirbharayA vAcA tuSTAva guhamAdarAt ॥3॥
The mountain Krauñca devoutly bowed at the lotuslike feet of Kumāra and eulogised him with reverence with words full of love.

क्रौंच उवाच ॥ कुमार स्कंद देवेश तारकासुरनाशक ॥ पाहि मां शरणापन्नं बाणासुरनिपीडितम् ॥ ४ ॥
krauMca uvAca ॥ kumAra skaMda deveza tArakAsuranAzaka ॥ pAhi mAM zaraNApannaM bANAsuranipIDitam ॥ 4 ॥
Krauñca said: O Kumāra, O Skanda, O lord of gods, O slayer of the Asura Tāraka protect me who have sought refuge in you. I am harassed by the Asura Bāṇa.

saMgarAtte mahAsena samucchinnaH palAyitaH ॥ nyapIDayacca mAgatya hA nAtha karuNAkara ॥ 5 ॥
O Mahāsena, O lord, O merciful one, routed and uprooted from the battle with you he came and harassed me.

tatpIDitaste zaraNamAgato'haM suduHkhitaH ॥ palAyamAno deveza zarajanmandayAM kuru ॥ 6 ॥
Afflicted by him I have run from him and sought refuge in you. O lord of gods, born amongst the reeds, be merciful.

दैत्यं तं नाशय विभो बाणाह्वं मां सुखीकुरु ॥ दैत्यघ्नस्त्वं विशेषेण देवावनकरस्स्वराट् ॥ ७ ॥
daityaM taM nAzaya vibho bANAhvaM mAM sukhIkuru ॥ daityaghnastvaM vizeSeNa devAvanakarassvarAT ॥ 7 ॥
O lord, please slay the Asura Bāṇa. Make me happy. You are the slayer of Asuras and a special saviour of the gods. You are a self-ruler.

brahmovAca ॥ iti krauMcastutasskandaH prasanno bhaktapAlakaH ॥ gRhItvA zaktimatulAM svAM sasmAra zivo dhiyA ॥8॥
Brahmā said: Skanda who was thus eulogised by Krauñca became delighted. He, the saviour of the devotees, took up his matchless spear and remembered Śiva.

चिक्षेप तां समुद्दिश्य स बाणं शंकरात्मजः ॥ महाशब्दो बभूवाथ जज्वलुश्च दिशो नभः ॥९॥
cikSepa tAM samuddizya sa bANaM zaMkarAtmajaH ॥ mahAzabdo babhUvAtha jajvaluzca dizo nabhaH ॥9॥
The son of Śiva hurled the spear aiming at Bāṇa. It gave loud report, blazing forth the quarters and the sky.

सबलं भस्मसात्कृत्वासुरं तं क्षणमात्रतः ॥ गुहोपकंठं शक्तिस्सा जगाम परमा मुने ॥2-4-11-१ ०॥
sabalaM bhasmasAtkRtvAsuraM taM kSaNamAtrataH ॥ guhopakaMThaM zaktissA jagAma paramA mune ॥2-4-11-1 0॥
O sage, reducing the Asuras to ashes along with his army in a trice, the great spear returned to Kumāra.

ततः कुमार प्रोवाच क्रौंचं गिरिवरं प्रभुः ॥ निर्भयस्स्वगृहं गच्छ नष्टस्स सबलोऽसुरः ॥११॥
tataH kumAra provAca krauMcaM girivaraM prabhuH ॥ nirbhayassvagRhaM gaccha naSTassa sabalo'suraH ॥11॥
The lord Kumāra told Krauñca, the chief of the mountains, “Go home fearlessly. That Asura has been slain along with his army.”

तच्छुत्वा स्वामिवचनं मुदितो गिरिराट् तदा ॥ स्तुत्वा गुहं तदारातिं स्वधाम प्रत्यपद्यत ॥१२॥
tacchutvA svAmivacanaM mudito girirAT tadA ॥ stutvA guhaM tadArAtiM svadhAma pratyapadyata ॥12॥
On hearing the words of the lord, the delighted lord of the mountains eulogised Kumāra the slayer of his enemy and went back to his abode.

ततः स्कन्दो महेशस्य मुदा स्थापितवान्मुने ॥ त्रीणि लिंगानि तत्रैव पापघ्नानि विधानतः ॥१३॥
tataH skando mahezasya mudA sthApitavAnmune ॥ trINi liMgAni tatraiva pApaghnAni vidhAnataH ॥13॥
O sage, with great pleasure and observing the rules Skanda installed three phallic emblems of Śiva that quell all sins.

प्रतिज्ञेश्वरनामादौ कपालेश्वरमादरात् ॥ कुमारेश्वरमेवाथ सर्वसिद्धिप्रदं त्रयम् ॥१४॥
pratijJezvaranAmAdau kapAlezvaramAdarAt ॥ kumArezvaramevAtha sarvasiddhipradaM trayam ॥14॥
The first is called Pratijñeśvara, the second Kapāleśvara and the last Kumāreśvara. The three are capable of conferring all the achievements.

पुनस्सर्वेश्वरस्तत्र जयस्तंभसमीपतः ॥ स्तंभेश्वराभिधं लिंगं गुहः स्थापितवान्मुदा॥१५॥
punassarvezvarastatra jayastaMbhasamIpataH ॥ staMbhezvarAbhidhaM liMgaM guhaH sthApitavAnmudA॥15॥
Thereafter Kumāra, the lord of all, joyously installed the phallic image Stambheśvaranear the column of victory.

ततस्सर्वे सुरास्तत्र विष्णुप्रभृतयो मुदा॥ लिंगं स्थापितवंतस्ते देवदेवस्य शूलिनः॥१६॥
tatassarve surAstatra viSNuprabhRtayo mudA॥ liMgaM sthApitavaMtaste devadevasya zUlinaH॥16॥
Then Viṣṇu and other gods joyously installed the phallic emblem of Śiva, the lord of the gods.

सर्वेषां शिवलिंगानां महिमाभूत्तदाद्भुतः॥ सर्वकामप्रदश्चापि मुक्तिदो भक्तिकारिणाम् ॥१७॥
sarveSAM zivaliMgAnAM mahimAbhUttadAdbhutaH॥ sarvakAmapradazcApi muktido bhaktikAriNAm ॥17॥
The glory of the phallic emblems of Śiva was marvellous, conferring all cherished desires and salvation to the devotees.

ततस्सर्वे सुरा विष्णुप्रमुखाः प्रीतमानसाः ॥ ऐच्छन्गिरिवरं गंतुं पुरस्कृत्य गुहं मुदा ॥१८॥
tatassarve surA viSNupramukhAH prItamAnasAH ॥ aicchangirivaraM gaMtuM puraskRtya guhaM mudA ॥18॥
Then the delighted Viṣṇu and the gods desired to go to the chief of mountains joyously putting Bṛhaspati ahead.

तस्मिन्नवसरे शेषपुत्रः कुमुद नामकः ॥ आजगाम कुमारस्य शरणं दैत्यपीडितः ॥१९॥
tasminnavasare zeSaputraH kumuda nAmakaH ॥ AjagAma kumArasya zaraNaM daityapIDitaH ॥19॥
Then Kumuda the son of Śeṣa who was harassed by the Asuras came and sought refuge in Kumāra.

प्रलंबाख्योऽसुरो यो हि रणादस्मात्पलायितः ॥ स तत्रोपद्रवं चक्रे प्रबलस्तारकानुगः ॥2-4-11-२०॥
pralaMbAkhyo'suro yo hi raNAdasmAtpalAyitaH ॥ sa tatropadravaM cakre prabalastArakAnugaH ॥2-4-11-20॥
Another follower of Tāraka—Pralamba who had fled from the previous battle wrought great havoc with full force.

सोऽथ शेषस्य तनयः कुमुदोऽहिपतेर्महान् ॥ कुमारशरणं प्राप्तस्तुष्टाव गिरिजात्मजम् ॥ २१ ॥
so'tha zeSasya tanayaH kumudo'hipatermahAn ॥ kumArazaraNaM prAptastuSTAva girijAtmajam ॥ 21 ॥
Kumuda, the great son of Śeṣa the lord of serpents, sought refuge in Kumāra the son of Pārvatī and eulogised him.

कुमुद उवाच ॥ देवदेव महादेव वरतात महाप्रभो॥ पीडितोऽहं प्रलंबेन त्वाहं शरणमागतः ॥ २२ ॥
kumuda uvAca ॥ devadeva mahAdeva varatAta mahAprabho॥ pIDito'haM pralaMbena tvAhaM zaraNamAgataH ॥ 22 ॥
Kumuda said: O excellent son of great lord, lord of the gods, O great chief, I am afflicted by Pralamba and am seeking refuge in you.

O Kumāra, O Skanda, O lord of the gods, O great lord, O slayer of Tāraka, save me harassed by the Asura Pralamba and seeking refuge in you.

त्वं दीनबंधुः करुणासिन्धुरानतवत्सलः ॥ खलनिग्रहकर्ता हि शरण्यश्च सतां गतिः ॥२४॥
tvaM dInabaMdhuH karuNAsindhurAnatavatsalaH ॥ khalanigrahakartA hi zaraNyazca satAM gatiH ॥24॥
You are the kinsman of the distressed, the ocean of mercy, favourably disposed to the devotees, the slayer of the wicked, worthy of refuge and the goal of the good.

कुमुदेनस्तुतश्चेत्थं विज्ञप्तस्तद्वधाय हि ॥ स्वाश्च शक्तिं स जग्राह स्मृत्वा शिवपदांबुजौ ॥ २५ ॥
kumudenastutazcetthaM vijJaptastadvadhAya hi ॥ svAzca zaktiM sa jagrAha smRtvA zivapadAMbujau ॥ 25 ॥
Eulogised thus by Kumuda and requested to slay the demon Pralamba, the lord took up his spear after remembering the lotus-like feet of Śiva.

The son of Pārvatī hurled the spear at Pralamba. It made a loud report. The quarters and the sky blazed.

तं सायुतबलं शक्तिर्द्रुतं कृत्वा च भस्मसात् ॥ गुहोपकंठं सहसाजगामाक्लिष्टवारिणी ॥ २७ ॥
taM sAyutabalaM zaktirdrutaM kRtvA ca bhasmasAt ॥ guhopakaMThaM sahasAjagAmAkliSTavAriNI ॥ 27 ॥
Reducing that powerful Asura to ashes in a trice the spear carried out the job without strain and returned to Kumāra.

ततः कुमारः प्रोवाच कुमुदं नागबालकम् ॥ निर्भयः स्वगृहं गच्छ नष्टस्स सबलोऽसुरः ॥२८॥
tataH kumAraH provAca kumudaM nAgabAlakam ॥ nirbhayaH svagRhaM gaccha naSTassa sabalo'suraH ॥28॥
Then Kumāra told the Nāga child Kumuda—“Go home fearlessly. That Asura has been slain along with his army.”

तच्छुत्वा गुहवाक्यं स कुमुदोहिपतेस्सुतः ॥ स्तुत्वा कुमारं नत्वा च पातालं मुदितो ययौ ॥ २९ ॥
tacchutvA guhavAkyaM sa kumudohipatessutaH ॥ stutvA kumAraM natvA ca pAtAlaM mudito yayau ॥ 29 ॥
On hearing the words of Guha, Kumuda, the son of the Nāga chief eulogised and bowed to Kumāra and went to Pātāla in great delight.

एवं कुमारविजयं वर्णितं ते मुनीश्वर ॥ चरितं तारकवधं परमाश्चर्यकारकम् ॥ 2-4-11-३० ॥
evaM kumAravijayaM varNitaM te munIzvara ॥ caritaM tArakavadhaM paramAzcaryakArakam ॥ 2-4-11-30 ॥
Thus the story of the victory of Kumāra, including the wonderful way in which Tāraka was slain, has been narrated by me, O noble sage.

सर्वपापहरं दिव्यं सर्वकामप्रदं नृणाम् ॥ धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं सताम् ॥ ३१ ॥
sarvapApaharaM divyaM sarvakAmapradaM nRNAm ॥ dhanyaM yazasyamAyuSyaM bhuktimuktipradaM satAm ॥ 31 ॥
It is the divine story that removes all sins. It bestows all desires on men. It is conducive to the increase of wealth, glory and longevity. It confers worldly pleasures and salvation on the good.

ये कीर्तयंति सुयशोऽमितभाग्ययुता नराः ॥ कुमारचरितं दिव्यं शिव लोकं प्रयांति ते ॥ ३२ ॥
ye kIrtayaMti suyazo'mitabhAgyayutA narAH ॥ kumAracaritaM divyaM ziva lokaM prayAMti te ॥ 32 ॥
Those who recite this divine story of Kumāra and glorify him are infinitely fortunate and attain Śivaloka.

श्रोष्यंति ये च तत्कीर्तिं भक्त्या श्रद्धान्विता जनाः ॥ मुक्तिं प्राप्स्यन्ति ते दिव्यामिह भुक्त्वा परं सुखम् ॥ ३३ ॥
zroSyaMti ye ca tatkIrtiM bhaktyA zraddhAnvitA janAH ॥ muktiM prApsyanti te divyAmiha bhuktvA paraM sukham ॥ 33 ॥
Those who listen to his glory with devotion and faith will attain divine salvation hereafter after enjoying great happiness here.
