brahmovAca ॥ devadeva guha svAmiJzAMkare pArvatIsuta ॥ na zobhate raNo viSNu tArakAsurayorvRthA ॥1॥
Brahmā said: O Guha, O lord of gods, O son of Śiva and Pārvatī, the fight between Viṣṇu and Tāraka is not proper. It is futile.

विष्णुना न हि वध्योऽसौ तारको बलवानति ॥ मया दत्तवरस्तस्मात्सत्यं सत्यं वदाम्यहम् ॥ २ ॥
viSNunA na hi vadhyo'sau tArako balavAnati ॥ mayA dattavarastasmAtsatyaM satyaM vadAmyaham ॥ 2 ॥
Tāraka the powerful cannot be killed by Viṣṇu. He has been granted such a boon by me. It is truth. I am telling you the truth.

nAnyo haMtAsya pApasya tvAM vinA pArvatIsuta ॥ tasmAttvayA hi kartavyaM vacanaM me mahAprabho ॥3॥
O son of Pārvatī, none except you can be the slayer of this sinner. O great lord, my words shall be carried out by you.

sannaddho bhava daityasya vadhAyAzu paraMtapa ॥ tadvadhArthaM samutpannaH zaMkarAttvaM zivAsuta ॥4॥
O scorcher of enemies, please get ready to slay him. O son of Pārvatī you are born of Śiva for killing that demon.

rakSa rakSa mahAvIra tridazAnvyathitAnraNe ॥ na bAlastvaM yuvA naiva kiM tu sarvezvaraH prabhuH ॥ 5 ॥
O great hero, save the gods distressed in the battle. You are neither a boy nor a youth but the lord of all.

शक्रं पश्य तथा विष्णुं व्याकुलं च सुरान् गणान्॥ एवं जहि महादैत्यं त्रैलोक्यं सुखिनं कुरु ॥ ६ ॥
zakraM pazya tathA viSNuM vyAkulaM ca surAn gaNAn॥ evaM jahi mahAdaityaM trailokyaM sukhinaM kuru ॥ 6 ॥
See Indra and Viṣṇu. They are agitated and distressed, So also the gods and the Gaṇas. Slay this great demon. Make the three worlds happy.

anena vijitazcendro lokapAlaiH purA saha ॥ viSNuzcApi mahAvIro tarjitastapaso balAt॥7॥
Formerly Indra and the guardians of the quarters had been conquered by him. Due to the power of his penance, the heroic Viṣṇu too has been threatened by him.

त्रैलोक्यं निर्जितं सर्वमसुरेण दुरात्मना॥ इदानीं तव सान्निध्यात्पुनर्युद्धं कृतं च तैः॥८॥
trailokyaM nirjitaM sarvamasureNa durAtmanA॥ idAnIM tava sAnnidhyAtpunaryuddhaM kRtaM ca taiH॥8॥
The entire universe of the three worlds has been defeated by this wicked Asura. Now, because of your presence, they have fought again.

तस्मात्त्वया निहंतव्यस्तारकः पापपूरुषः ॥ अन्यवध्यो न चैवायं मद्वराच्छंकरात्मज॥९॥
tasmAttvayA nihaMtavyastArakaH pApapUruSaH ॥ anyavadhyo na caivAyaM madvarAcchaMkarAtmaja॥9॥
Hence, O son of Śiva, this sinful being Tāraka shall be killed by you. Due to the boon granted by me he cannot be slain by any one else.

Brahmā said: On hearing these words of mine, Kumāra, son of Śiva, was delighted and he laughed. “So be it”, said he.

vinizcityAsuravadhaM zAMkarissa mahA prabhuH ॥ vimAnAdavatIryAtha padAtirabhavattadA॥11॥
Resolving to kill the Asura, the great lord, son of Śiva got down from the aerial chariot and stood on the ground.

padbhyAM tadAsau paridhAvamAno reje'tivIraH zivajaH kumAraH॥ kare samAdAya mahAprabhAM tAM zaktiM maholkAmiva dIptidIptAm॥12॥
Running on foot, seizing his lustrous spear blazing like a meteor, the powerful warrior Kumāra born of Śiva shone well.

दृष्ट्वा तमायातमतिप्रचंडमव्याकुलं षण्मुखमप्रमेयम्॥ दैत्यो बभाषे सुरसत्तमान्स कुमार एष द्विषतां प्रहंता॥१३॥
dRSTvA tamAyAtamatipracaMDamavyAkulaM SaNmukhamaprameyam॥ daityo babhASe surasattamAnsa kumAra eSa dviSatAM prahaMtA॥13॥
On seeing the incomprehensible six-headed deity coming forward, fierce and unagitated, the Asura spoke to the gods derisively—“O this child indeed will slay the enemies!”

अनेन साकं ह्यहमेकवीरो योत्स्ये च सर्वानहमेव वीरान्॥ गणांश्च सर्वानपि घातयामि सलोकपालान्हरिनायकांश्च॥१४॥
anena sAkaM hyahamekavIro yotsye ca sarvAnahameva vIrAn॥ gaNAMzca sarvAnapi ghAtayAmi salokapAlAnharinAyakAMzca॥14॥
I will fight with him single-handed. I will kill the soldiers, the Gaṇas and the guardians of the quarters led by Viṣṇu.

इत्येवमुक्त्वा स तदा महाबलः कुमारमुद्दिश्य ययौ च योद्धुम् ॥ जग्राह शक्तिं परमाद्भुतां च स तारको देववरान्बभाषे॥१५ ॥
ityevamuktvA sa tadA mahAbalaH kumAramuddizya yayau ca yoddhum ॥ jagrAha zaktiM paramAdbhutAM ca sa tArako devavarAnbabhASe॥15 ॥
Saying thus, the powerful Asura rushed at Kumāra to fight with him. Tāraka seized his wonderful spear and spoke to the gods.

॥ तारक उवाच ॥ कुमारो मेऽग्रतश्चाद्य भवद्भिश्च कथं कृतः ॥ यूयं गतत्रपा देवा विशेषाच्छक्रमेश्वरौ ॥ १६ ॥
॥ tAraka uvAca ॥ kumAro me'gratazcAdya bhavadbhizca kathaM kRtaH ॥ yUyaM gatatrapA devA vizeSAcchakramezvarau ॥ 16 ॥
Tāraka said: How is it that you all kept Kumāra face to face with me? You gods are shameless especially Indra and Viṣṇu.

पुरैताभ्यां कृतं कर्म विरुद्धं वेदमार्गतः ॥ तच्छृणुध्वं मया प्रोक्तं वर्णयामि विशेषतः ॥१७॥
puraitAbhyAM kRtaM karma viruddhaM vedamArgataH ॥ tacchRNudhvaM mayA proktaM varNayAmi vizeSataH ॥17॥
Formerly, both of them had acted in violation of the Vedic path. Listen. I shall describe the same.

तत्र विष्णुश्छली दोषी ह्यविवेकी विशे षतः ॥ बलिर्येन पुरा बद्धश्छलमाश्रित्य पापतः ॥१६॥
tatra viSNuzchalI doSI hyavivekI vize SataH ॥ baliryena purA baddhazchalamAzritya pApataH ॥16॥
Viṣṇu is deceptive, defective and indiscreet. It was by him that Baliwas formerly bound by taking recourse to deception with sinful intention.

तेनैव यत्नतः पूर्वमसुरौ मधुकैटभौ ॥ शिरौहीनौ कृतौ धौर्त्याद्वेदमार्गो विवर्जितः ॥१९॥
tenaiva yatnataH pUrvamasurau madhukaiTabhau ॥ zirauhInau kRtau dhaurtyAdvedamArgo vivarjitaH ॥19॥
The Asuras Madhu and Kaiṭabhawere beheaded by his roguishness. He forsook the Vedic path.

मोहिनीरूपतोऽनेन पंक्तिभेदः कृतो हि वै ॥ देवासुरसुधापाने वेदमार्गो विगर्हितः ॥ 2-4-9-२० ॥
mohinIrUpato'nena paMktibhedaH kRto hi vai ॥ devAsurasudhApAne vedamArgo vigarhitaH ॥ 2-4-9-20 ॥

When the gods and Asuras sat for drinking the nectar it was he who violated the sanctity of the vows when he assumed the form of an enchantress.Thus he slighted the Vedic path.

पापं विना स्वकीया स्त्री त्यक्ता पापरतेन यत् ॥ तत्रापि श्रुतिमार्गश्च ध्वंसितस्स्वार्थहेतवे ॥२२॥
pApaM vinA svakIyA strI tyaktA pAparatena yat ॥ tatrApi zrutimArgazca dhvaMsitassvArthahetave ॥22॥
Sinful that he was, he forsook his own innocent wife. There too, he violated the path of Śruti for achieving his selfish end.

स्वजनन्याश्शिरश्छिन्नमवतारे रसाख्यके॥ गुरुपुत्रापमानश्च कृतोऽनेन दुरात्मना॥२३॥
svajananyAzzirazchinnamavatAre rasAkhyake॥ guruputrApamAnazca kRto'nena durAtmanA॥23॥
In his sixth incarnation (as Paraśurāma) he cut off the head of his own mother. This wicked man insulted his own preceptor’s son.

कृष्णो भूत्वान्यनार्यश्च दूषिताः कुलधर्मतः ॥ श्रुतिमार्गं परित्यज्य स्वविवाहाः कृतास्तथा ॥२४॥
kRSNo bhUtvAnyanAryazca dUSitAH kuladharmataH ॥ zrutimArgaM parityajya svavivAhAH kRtAstathA ॥24॥
Incarnating as Kṛṣṇa he defiled the wives of others and forced them to violate the traditional virtues of the family. He contracted his marriages without any reference to the Vedic path.

पुनश्च वेदमार्गो हि निंदितो नवमे भवे॥ स्थापितं नास्तिकमतं वेदमार्गविरोधकृत्॥२५॥
punazca vedamArgo hi niMdito navame bhave॥ sthApitaM nAstikamataM vedamArgavirodhakRt॥25॥
Again in his ninth incarnation he slighted the Vedic path and contrary to its principles, preached and established the atheistic philosophy called Buddhism.

एवं येन कृतं पापं वेदमार्गं विसृज्य वै ॥ स कथं विजयेद्युद्धे भवेद्धर्मवतांवरः ॥२६॥
evaM yena kRtaM pApaM vedamArgaM visRjya vai ॥ sa kathaM vijayedyuddhe bhaveddharmavatAMvaraH ॥26॥
How can he be considered an excellent, virtuous man, how can he be victorious in battle who has committed sin without caring for Vedic cult?

भ्राता ज्येष्ठश्च यस्तस्य शक्रः पापी महान्मतः ॥ तेन पापान्यनेकानि कृतानि निजहेतुतः ॥ २७ ॥
bhrAtA jyeSThazca yastasya zakraH pApI mahAnmataH ॥ tena pApAnyanekAni kRtAni nijahetutaH ॥ 27 ॥
Indra, his elder brother, is a greater sinner. He has committed many sins for his self-interest.

निकृत्तो हि दितेर्गर्भस्स्वार्थ हेतोर्विशेषतः ॥ धर्षिता गौतमस्त्री वै हतो वृत्रश्च विप्रजः ॥ २८ ॥
nikRtto hi ditergarbhassvArtha hetorvizeSataH ॥ dharSitA gautamastrI vai hato vRtrazca viprajaH ॥ 28 ॥
To gain his selfish end, by him Diti’s foetus was destroyed;the modesty of Gautama’s wife was outraged,Vṛtra, the son of a brahmin, was killed.

विश्वरूपद्विजातेर्वै भागिनेयस्य यद्गुरोः ॥ निकृत्तानि च शीर्षाणि तदध्वाध्वंसितश्श्रुतेः ॥ २९ ॥
vizvarUpadvijAtervai bhAgineyasya yadguroH ॥ nikRttAni ca zIrSANi tadadhvAdhvaMsitazzruteH ॥ 29 ॥
He beheaded the brahmin Viśvarūpa,he nephew of Bṛhaspati. Thus he transgressed the Vedic path.

कृत्वा बहूनि पापानि हरिश्शक्रः पुनःपुनः ॥ तेजोभिर्विहतावेव नष्टवीर्यौ विशेषतः ॥2-4-9-३०॥
kRtvA bahUni pApAni harizzakraH punaHpunaH ॥ tejobhirvihatAveva naSTavIryau vizeSataH ॥2-4-9-30॥
Doing such sinful acts frequently Viṣṇu and Śiva are already deficient in splendour and their prowess is spent out.

तयोर्बलेन नो यूयं संग्रामे जयमाप्स्यथ ॥ किमर्थं मूढतां प्राप्य प्राणांस्त्यक्तुमिहागताः ॥ ३१ ॥
tayorbalena no yUyaM saMgrAme jayamApsyatha ॥ kimarthaM mUDhatAM prApya prANAMstyaktumihAgatAH ॥ 31 ॥
You will never gain victory in the battle by relying on them. Why then did you foolishly come here to lose your lives?

जानन्तौ धर्ममेतौ न स्वार्थलंपटमानसौ ॥ धर्मं विनाऽमराः कृत्यं निष्फलं सकलं भवेत् ॥३२॥
jAnantau dharmametau na svArthalaMpaTamAnasau ॥ dharmaM vinA'marAH kRtyaM niSphalaM sakalaM bhavet ॥32॥
These two, always seeking selfish ends, do not know what is virtue. O gods, without virtue every rite becomes futile.

महाधृष्टाविमौ मेद्य कृतवंतौ पुरश्शिशुम् ॥ अहं बालं वधिष्यामि तयोस्सोऽपि भविष्यति ॥ ३३ ॥
mahAdhRSTAvimau medya kRtavaMtau purazzizum ॥ ahaM bAlaM vadhiSyAmi tayosso'pi bhaviSyati ॥ 33 ॥
These two impudent fellows are presumptuous enough to place a child in front of me. Why? I will kill the child too. They too will have it.

किं बाल इतो यायाद्दूरं प्राणपरीप्सया ॥ इत्युक्तोद्दिश्य च हरी वीरभद्रमुवाच सः ॥ ३४ ॥
kiM bAla ito yAyAddUraM prANaparIpsayA ॥ ityuktoddizya ca harI vIrabhadramuvAca saH ॥ 34 ॥
But let the child leave from here and save his life.” After saying this, hinting at Indra and Viṣṇu he turned to Vīrabhadra and said.

पुरा हतास्त्वया विप्रा दक्षयज्ञे ह्यनेकशः ॥ तत्कर्मणः फलं चाद्य दर्शयिष्यामि तेऽनघ॥ ३९ ॥
purA hatAstvayA viprA dakSayajJe hyanekazaH ॥ tatkarmaNaH phalaM cAdya darzayiSyAmi te'nagha॥ 39 ॥
Formerly in the sacrifice of Dakṣa, many brahmins had been killed by you, O sinless one, I shall show you the fruit thereof.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्येवमुक्त्वा तु विधूय पुण्यं निजं स तन्निंदनकर्मणा वै ॥ जग्राह शक्तिं परमाद्भुतां च स तारको युद्धवतां वरिष्ठः ॥ ३६ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityevamuktvA tu vidhUya puNyaM nijaM sa tanniMdanakarmaNA vai ॥ jagrAha zaktiM paramAdbhutAM ca sa tArako yuddhavatAM variSThaH ॥ 36 ॥
Brahmā said: Saying this and dispossessing himself of his own merit by that act of censure, Tāraka the foremost among war-mongers seized his wonderful spear.

तं बालान्तिकमायातं तारकासुरमोजसा ॥ आजघान च वज्रेण शक्रो गुहपुरस्सरः ॥ ३७ ॥
taM bAlAntikamAyAtaM tArakAsuramojasA ॥ AjaghAna ca vajreNa zakro guhapurassaraH ॥ 37 ॥
Indra who was going ahead of Kumāra hit the demon Tāraka forcibly with his thunderbolt as he was approaching the boy.

तेन वज्रप्रहारेण तारको जर्जरीकृतः॥ भूमौ पपात सहसा निंदाहतबलः क्षणम् ॥३८॥
tena vajraprahAreNa tArako jarjarIkRtaH॥ bhUmau papAta sahasA niMdAhatabalaH kSaNam ॥38॥
Tāraka was shattered and split by that blow of the thunderbolt, his power being sapped up already by the act of censure. He fell on the ground.

पतितोऽपि समुत्थाय शक्त्या तं प्राहरद्रुषा ॥ पुरंदरं गजस्थं हि पातयामास भूतले ॥३९॥
patito'pi samutthAya zaktyA taM prAharadruSA ॥ puraMdaraM gajasthaM hi pAtayAmAsa bhUtale ॥39॥
Though he fell down, he got up immediately and furiously hit Indra who was seated on an elephant, with his spear and felled him to the ground.

hAhAkAro mahAnAsItpatite ca puraMdare ॥ senAyAM nirjarANAM hi taddRSTvA kleza Avizat॥2-4-9-40॥
When Indra fell down there was a great hue and cry. On seeing it a great pain entered the army of the gods.

तारकेणाऽपि तत्रैव यत्कृतं कर्म दुःखदम् ॥ स्वनाशकारणं धर्मविरुदं तन्निबोध मे ॥४१॥
tArakeNA'pi tatraiva yatkRtaM karma duHkhadam ॥ svanAzakAraNaM dharmavirudaM tannibodha me ॥41॥
Know from me the vile action that Tāraka has committed against virtue which is sure to bring about his own ruin.

He stamped on Indra with his foot after he fell down and seized his thunderbolt with which he hit him with great force.

Seeing Indra thus insulted, the powerful lord Viṣṇu lifted his discus and hit Tāraka.

Hit by the discus he fell on the ground. Getting up again, the lord of the Asuras hit Viṣṇu with his spear.

On being hit by the spear Viṣṇu fell on the ground. There was a great uproar. The gods lamented much.

Within a moment Viṣṇu got up but by that time Vīrabhadra came near the demon and dexterously raised his trident.

The powerful Vīrabhadra hit him with all his force.

Hit by the trident he fell on the ground. Though he fell down, Tāraka of mighty splendour got up again.

The great hero, the leader of the entire host of Asuras hit Vīrabhadra in his chest with his great spear.

Vīrabhadra, hit by the spear furiously in his chest, fell unconscious on the ground.

The gods, the Gaṇas, Gandharvas, Serpents and Rākṣasas lamented frequently with cries of “Alas” “Alas.”

Within a moment, the powerful Vīrabhadra, the slayer of enemies, got up lifting his trident aloft, that had the lustre of lightning and was blazing forth.

svarociSA bhAsitadigvitAnaM sUryendubimbAgnisamAnamaMDalam ॥ mahAprabhaM vIrabhayAvahaM paraM kAlAkhyamatyaMtakaraM mahojjvalam ॥53॥
The trident had a halo around, like that of the sun, the moon and the fire. It illuminated the quarters by means of its brilliance; caused terror even in the hearts of the brave. It had a deadly splendour and blazed well.

When the powerful Vīrabhadra was about to hit the Asura with his trident, he was prevented by Kumāra.
