Brahmā said: There Kumāra showed a miraculous feat. O Nārada, listen to it that bestows devotion.

dvija eko nAradAkhya AjagAma tadaiva hi ॥ tatrAdhvarakaraH zrImAJzaraNArthaM guhasya vai ॥ 2 ॥
Then a certain brahmin Nārada came there, seeking refuge in Kumāra. He was glorious and had been performing a sacrifice.

sa vipraH prApya nikaTaM kArttikasya prasannadhIH ॥ svAbhiprAyaM samAcakhyau supraNamya zubhaiH stavaiH ॥ 3 ॥
Approaching Kumāra, bowing to and eulogising him with auspicious hymns the delighted brahmin related his tale.

॥ विप्र उवाच ॥ शृणु स्वामिन्वचो मेद्य कष्टं मे विनिवारय ॥ सर्वब्रह्मांडनाथस्त्वमतस्ते शरणं गतः॥४॥
॥ vipra uvAca ॥ zRNu svAminvaco medya kaSTaM me vinivAraya ॥ sarvabrahmAMDanAthastvamataste zaraNaM gataH॥4॥
The brahmin said: O lord, listen to my words. Relieve my distress. You are the lord of the universe. I seek refuge in you.

अजमेधाध्वरं कर्तुमारंभं कृतवानहम् ॥ सोऽजो गतो गृहान्मे हि त्रोटयित्वा स्वबंधनम् ॥ ५ ॥
ajamedhAdhvaraM kartumAraMbhaM kRtavAnaham ॥ so'jo gato gRhAnme hi troTayitvA svabaMdhanam ॥ 5 ॥
I began a goat sacrifice. The goat got loosened and strayed away from my house.

न जाने स गतः कुत्राऽन्वेषणं तत्कृतं बहु ॥ न प्राप्तोऽतस्स बलवान् भंगो भवति मे क्रतोः ॥ ६ ॥
na jAne sa gataH kutrA'nveSaNaM tatkRtaM bahu ॥ na prApto'tassa balavAn bhaMgo bhavati me kratoH ॥ 6 ॥
I do not know where it has gone. I have searched for it here and there but have not found it. Hence this will cause a serious default in my sacrifice.

tvayi nAthe sati vibho yajJabhaMgaH kathaM bhavet ॥ vicAryyaivA'khilezAna kAma pUrNaM kuruSva me ॥ 7 ॥
While you are the lord, how can there be an obstacle to my sacrifice? O lord, after pondering over this matter please fulfil my task.

त्वां विहाय शरण्यं कं यायां शिवसुत प्रभो ॥ सर्वब्रह्मांडनाथं हि सर्वामरसुसेवितम् ॥८॥
tvAM vihAya zaraNyaM kaM yAyAM zivasuta prabho ॥ sarvabrahmAMDanAthaM hi sarvAmarasusevitam ॥8॥
O lord, O son of Śiva, who else can I approach except you, who are worthy of being resorted to, who are the lord of the entire universe and are served by all the gods.

दीनबंधुर्दयासिन्धुस्सुसेव्या भक्तवत्सलः॥ हरिब्रह्मादिदेवैश्च सुस्तुतः परमेश्वरः ॥९॥
dInabaMdhurdayAsindhussusevyA bhaktavatsalaH॥ haribrahmAdidevaizca sustutaH paramezvaraH ॥9॥
You are the kinsman of the distressed. You are worthy of being served well. You are favourably disposed to your devotees. You are the great lord eulogised by Viṣṇu, Brahmā and other gods.

पार्वतीनन्दनस्स्कन्दः परमेकः परंतपः ॥ परमात्माऽत्मदस्स्वामी सतां च शरणार्थिनाम् ॥ 2-4-6-१० ॥
pArvatInandanasskandaH paramekaH paraMtapaH ॥ paramAtmA'tmadassvAmI satAM ca zaraNArthinAm ॥ 2-4-6-10 ॥
You are Skanda the delighter of Pārvatī, the sole destroyer of enemies, the great soul, the lord who bestows his own self upon the good seeking refuge in him.

दीनानाथ महेश शंकरसुत त्रैलोक्यनाथ प्रभो मायाधीश समागतोऽस्मि शरणं मां पाहि विप्रप्रिय ॥ त्वं सर्वप्रभुप्रियः खिलविदब्रह्मादिदेवैस्तुतस्त्वं मायाकृतिरात्मभक्तसुखदो रक्षापरो मायिकः ॥ ११ ॥
dInAnAtha maheza zaMkarasuta trailokyanAtha prabho mAyAdhIza samAgato'smi zaraNaM mAM pAhi viprapriya ॥ tvaM sarvaprabhupriyaH khilavidabrahmAdidevaistutastvaM mAyAkRtirAtmabhaktasukhado rakSAparo mAyikaH ॥ 11 ॥
O lord of the distressed, O great lord, O son of Śiva, O lord of the three worlds, O master of magical art, I have to seek refuge in you. O favourite of the brahmins, save me. You are the lord of all. You are eulogised by Brahmā and other gods who bow to you. You have assumed forms through magical art. You are the bestower of happiness to your devotees. You are eager to protect. You wield power of deluding others.

भक्तप्राणगुणाकरस्त्रिगुणतो भिन्नोसि शंभुप्रियः शंभुः शंभुसुतः प्रसन्नसुखदस्सच्चित्स्वरूपो महान्॥ सर्वज्ञस्त्रिपुरघ्नशंकरसुतः सत्प्रेमवश्यस्सदा षड्वक्त्रः प्रियसाधुरानतप्रियस्सर्वेश्वर श्शंकरः ॥ साधुद्रोहकरघ्न शंकरगुरो ब्रह्मांडनाथो प्रभुः सर्वेषाममरादिसेवितपदो मां पाहि सेवाप्रिय ॥ १२ ॥
bhaktaprANaguNAkarastriguNato bhinnosi zaMbhupriyaH zaMbhuH zaMbhusutaH prasannasukhadassaccitsvarUpo mahAn॥ sarvajJastripuraghnazaMkarasutaH satpremavazyassadA SaDvaktraH priyasAdhurAnatapriyassarvezvara zzaMkaraH ॥ sAdhudrohakaraghna zaMkaraguro brahmAMDanAtho prabhuH sarveSAmamarAdisevitapado mAM pAhi sevApriya ॥ 12 ॥
You love devotees as your own vital air. You are the receptacle of all attributes. You are beyond three attributes. You are the beloved of Śiva. You are Śiva Himself. You confer welfare. You are the bestower of happiness with delight. You are the great Existent and cosmic consciousness. You are the son of Śiva, the omniscient who ḍestroyed the three cities of Asuras. You are always subservient to great and pious love. You have six faces. You love the saintly persons who kneel to you. You are the lord of all people and their benefactor. You destroy those, who harass the good. You are the preceptor of even Śiva. You are the lord of the entire universe. Your feet are served by all the gods. O lover of service, save me.

वैरिभयंकर शंकर जनशरणस्य वन्दे तव पदपद्मं सुखकरणस्य ॥ विज्ञप्तिं मम कर्णे स्कन्द निधेहि निजभक्तिं जनचेतसि सदा विधेहि ॥ १३ ॥
vairibhayaMkara zaMkara janazaraNasya vande tava padapadmaM sukhakaraNasya ॥ vijJaptiM mama karNe skanda nidhehi nijabhaktiM janacetasi sadA vidhehi ॥ 13 ॥
O Skanda, terrible to the enemies, the benefactor of the devotees, I bow to your lotus-like feet. You are the refuge of people and source of their happiness. Please hear my submission through your ears. Please instil into the heart of everyone the feelings of devotion to you.

करोति किं तस्य बली विपक्षो दक्षोऽपि पक्षोभयापार्श्वगुप्तः ॥ किन्तक्षकोप्यामिषभक्षको वा त्वं रक्षको यस्य सदक्षमानः ॥१४॥
karoti kiM tasya balI vipakSo dakSo'pi pakSobhayApArzvaguptaH ॥ kintakSakopyAmiSabhakSako vA tvaM rakSako yasya sadakSamAnaH ॥14॥
If you are the protector with efficient honour what harm can an opponent do even if he be strong and efficient and protected on either side? What harm can even Takṣakaor even a carnivorous animal do unto him.

विबुधगुरुरपि त्वां स्तोतुमीशो न हि स्यात्कथय कथमहं स्यां मंदबुद्धिर्वरार्च्यः ॥ शुचिरशुचिरनार्यो यादृशस्तादृशो वा पदकमल परागं स्कन्द ते प्रार्थयामि ॥ १५ ॥
vibudhagururapi tvAM stotumIzo na hi syAtkathaya kathamahaM syAM maMdabuddhirvarArcyaH ॥ zucirazuciranAryo yAdRzastAdRzo vA padakamala parAgaM skanda te prArthayAmi ॥ 15 ॥
Even the preceptor of the gods cannot eulogise you adequately. Then tell me, how can I a foolish and wretched creature? O Skanda, pure or impure, noble or ignoble, of whatever nature I be, I pray unto the dust of your lotus-like feet.

हे सर्वेश्वर भक्तवत्सल कृपासिन्धो त्वदीयोऽस्म्यहं भृत्यस्स्वस्य न सेवकस्य गणपस्याऽऽ गश्शतं सत्प्रभो ॥ भक्तिं क्वापि कृतां मनागपि विभो जानासि भृत्यार्तिहा॥ त्वत्तो नास्त्यपरोऽविता न भगवन् मत्तो नरः पामरः ॥ १६ ॥
he sarvezvara bhaktavatsala kRpAsindho tvadIyo'smyahaM bhRtyassvasya na sevakasya gaNapasyA'' gazzataM satprabho ॥ bhaktiM kvApi kRtAM manAgapi vibho jAnAsi bhRtyArtihA॥ tvatto nAstyaparo'vitA na bhagavan matto naraH pAmaraH ॥ 16 ॥
O lord of all, ocean of mercy, favourably disposed to devotees, I am your own servant. May even a hundred sins of your own servant or a leader of the Gaṇas be forgiven. O lord, you know even the slightest act of devotion done anywhere. You are the destroyer of the distress of your servants. O lord, there is no other protector save you and no other wretched vulgar person than I.

कल्याणकर्त्ता कलिकल्मषघ्नः कुबेरबन्धुः करुणार्द्रचित्तः ॥ त्रिषट्कनेत्रो रसवक्त्रशोभी यज्ञं प्रपूर्णं कुरु मे गुह त्वम् ॥ १७ ॥
kalyANakarttA kalikalmaSaghnaH kuberabandhuH karuNArdracittaH ॥ triSaTkanetro rasavaktrazobhI yajJaM prapUrNaM kuru me guha tvam ॥ 17 ॥
O lord, you are the cause of welfare, the destroyer of the sins of Kali age and a friend of Kubera. Your heart melts with pity. You have twelve eyes and you shine with six faces. Please make my sacrifice complete and perfect.

रक्षकस्त्वं त्रिलोकस्य शरणागतवत्सलः ॥ यज्ञकर्त्ता यज्ञभर्त्ता हरसे विघ्नकारिणाम् ॥ १८ ॥
rakSakastvaM trilokasya zaraNAgatavatsalaH ॥ yajJakarttA yajJabharttA harase vighnakAriNAm ॥ 18 ॥
You are the protector of the three worlds, favourite of those who seek refuge in you. You are the performer and sustainer of sacrifices. You remove those who bring in obstacles.

विघ्नवारण साधूनां सर्ग कारण सर्वतः ॥ पूर्णं कुरु ममेशान सुतयज्ञ नमोस्तु ते ॥१९॥
vighnavAraNa sAdhUnAM sarga kAraNa sarvataH ॥ pUrNaM kuru mamezAna sutayajJa namostu te ॥19॥
O warder of obstacles, the cause of the creation of the good in every respect, O son of Īśāna, please make my sacrifices complete. Obeisance be to you.

सर्वत्राता स्कन्द हि त्वं सर्वज्ञाता त्वमेव हि ॥ सर्वेश्वरस्त्वमीशानो निवेशसकलाऽवनः ॥2-4-6-२०॥
sarvatrAtA skanda hi tvaM sarvajJAtA tvameva hi ॥ sarvezvarastvamIzAno nivezasakalA'vanaH ॥2-4-6-20॥
O Skanda, you are the protector of all, the knower of all and the lord of all and Īśāna. By your penetration you protect all.

संगीतज्ञस्त्वमेवासि वेदविज्ञः परः प्रभुः ॥ सर्वस्थाता विधाता त्वं देवदेवस्सतां गतिः ॥२१॥
saMgItajJastvamevAsi vedavijJaH paraH prabhuH ॥ sarvasthAtA vidhAtA tvaM devadevassatAM gatiH ॥21॥
You alone are the knower of music, the great lord and knower of the Vedas. You are all-in-all, the creator, the lord of the gods and the goal of the good.

भवानीनन्दनश्शंभुतनयो वयुनः स्वराट् ॥ ध्याता ध्येयः पितॄणां हि पिता योनिः सदात्मनाम्॥ २२ ॥
bhavAnInandanazzaMbhutanayo vayunaH svarAT ॥ dhyAtA dhyeyaH pitRRNAM hi pitA yoniH sadAtmanAm॥ 22 ॥
You are the joy of Pārvatī, the son of Śiva. You are the perfect wisdom, the self-ruler, the meditator and the object of meditation. You are the father of the fathers and the source of origin of good souls.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य देवसम्राट् शिवात्मजः ॥ स्वगणं वीरबाह्वाख्यं प्रेषयामास तत्कृते ॥ २३ ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacastasya devasamrAT zivAtmajaH ॥ svagaNaM vIrabAhvAkhyaM preSayAmAsa tatkRte ॥ 23 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing his words, Śiva’s son, the emperor of the gods, sent his attendant Vīrabāhu on that mission.

तदाज्ञया वीरबाहुस्तदन्वेषणहेतवे॥ प्रणम्य स्वामिनं भक्त्या महावीरो द्रुतं ययौ ॥ २४ ॥
tadAjJayA vIrabAhustadanveSaNahetave॥ praNamya svAminaM bhaktyA mahAvIro drutaM yayau ॥ 24 ॥
At his bidding, the great hero Vīrabāhu who bowed to his master with devotion started in search of it.

अन्वेषणं चकारासौ सर्वब्रह्माण्डगोलके ॥ न प्राप तमजं कुत्र शुश्राव तदुपद्रवम् ॥२५॥
anveSaNaM cakArAsau sarvabrahmANDagolake ॥ na prApa tamajaM kutra zuzrAva tadupadravam ॥25॥
He searched throughout the universe but nowhere did he find the goat (although) he heard about the havoc done by it.

जगामाऽथ स वैकुंठं तत्राऽजं प्रददर्श तम् ॥ उपद्रवं प्रकुर्वन्तं गलयूपं महाबलम् ॥ २६ ॥
jagAmA'tha sa vaikuMThaM tatrA'jaM pradadarza tam ॥ upadravaM prakurvantaM galayUpaM mahAbalam ॥ 26 ॥
Then he went to Vaikuṇṭha where he saw the powerful goat working havoc with the sacrificial stake tied to its neck.

धृत्वा तं शृंगयो वीरो धर्षयित्वा तिवेगतः ॥ आनिनाय स्वामिपुरो विकुर्वंतं रवं बहु ॥ २७ ॥
dhRtvA taM zRMgayo vIro dharSayitvA tivegataH ॥ AninAya svAmipuro vikurvaMtaM ravaM bahu ॥ 27 ॥
The hero dragged it catching hold of its horns and brought it quickly before his lord even as it was bleating loudly.

दृष्ट्वा तं कार्तिकस्सोऽरमारुरोह स तं प्रभुः ॥ धृतब्रह्माण्डगरिमा महासूतिकरो गुहः ॥ २८ ॥
dRSTvA taM kArtikasso'ramAruroha sa taM prabhuH ॥ dhRtabrahmANDagarimA mahAsUtikaro guhaH ॥ 28 ॥
On seeing it, lord Kārttikeya who could carry the weighty universe, and the worker of great miracles, quickly rode on it.

मुहूर्तमात्रतस्सोऽजो ब्रह्मांडं सकलं मुने ॥ बभ्राम श्रम एवाशु पुनस्तत्स्थानमागतः ॥ २९ ॥
muhUrtamAtratasso'jo brahmAMDaM sakalaM mune ॥ babhrAma zrama evAzu punastatsthAnamAgataH ॥ 29 ॥
Within a Muhūrta, O sage, the goat walked round the universe and without exhaustion returned to the same place.

तत उत्तीर्य स स्वामी समुवास स्वमासनम्॥ सोऽजः स्थितस्तु तत्रैव स नारद उवाच तम् ॥2-4-6-३०॥
tata uttIrya sa svAmI samuvAsa svamAsanam॥ so'jaH sthitastu tatraiva sa nArada uvAca tam ॥2-4-6-30॥
Then the lord got down and resumed his seat. The goat stood there itself. Then the brahmin Nārada told the lord.

॥ नारद उवाच ॥ नमस्ते देव देवेश देहि मेऽजं कृपानिधे॥ कुर्यामध्वरमानन्दात्सखायं कुरु मामहो ॥३१॥
॥ nArada uvAca ॥ namaste deva deveza dehi me'jaM kRpAnidhe॥ kuryAmadhvaramAnandAtsakhAyaM kuru mAmaho ॥31॥
Nārada said: Obeisance to you, O lord of gods, O storehouse of mercy, give the goat to me. Let me perform the sacrifice with pleasure. Please assist me as my friend.

॥ कार्त्तिक उवाच ॥ वधयोग्यो न विप्राऽजः स्वगृहं गच्छ नारद ॥ पूर्णोऽस्तु तेऽध्वरस्सर्वः प्रसादादेव मे कृतः॥३२॥
॥ kArttika uvAca ॥ vadhayogyo na viprA'jaH svagRhaM gaccha nArada ॥ pUrNo'stu te'dhvarassarvaH prasAdAdeva me kRtaH॥32॥
Kārttikeya said: O brahmin Nārada, this goat does not deserve to be killed. Return home. May your sacrifice be complete. It has been so ordained by my favour.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य द्विजस्स्वामी वचनं प्रीतमानसः॥ जगाम स्वालयं दत्त्वा तस्मा आशिषमुत्तमाम् ॥३३॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya dvijassvAmI vacanaM prItamAnasaH॥ jagAma svAlayaM dattvA tasmA AziSamuttamAm ॥33॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of the lord, the brahmin was delighted. He returned home after bestowing his excellent blessings.
