brahmovAca ॥ etasminnantare tvaM hi viSNunA prerito drutam ॥ anukUlayituM zaMbhumayAstannikaTe mune ॥1॥
Brahmā said: In the meantime, O sage, urged by Viṣṇu you went immediately to Śiva to conciliate Him.

tatra gatvA sa vai rudro bhavatA suprabodhitaH ॥ stotrairnAnAvidhaisstutvA devakAryacikIrSayA ॥2॥
After reaching there, with a desire to get the task of the gods fulfilled, you pleaded with Śiva after eulogising Him with different kinds of hymns.

zrutvA tvadvacanaM prItyA zaMbhunA dhRtamadbhutam ॥ svarUpamuttamandivyaM kRpAlutvaM ca darzitam ॥3॥
On hearing your words Śiva joyously assumed a wonderfully excellent and divine form and showed His mercifulness.

taddRSTvA sundaraM zambhuM svarUpammanmathA dhikam ॥ atyahRSyo mune tvaM hi lAvaNyaparamAyanam ॥ 4 ॥
O sage, on seeing the comely form of Śiva, the receptacle of exquisite beauty, far better than that of the cupid, you were greatly delighted.

stotrairnAnAvidhaisstutvA paramAnandasaMyutaH ॥ AgacchastvaM mune tatra yatra menA sthitAkhilaiH ॥ 5 ॥
Highly delighted you eulogised Him again and again with different kinds of hymns and returned to the place where Mena was seated along with other gods.

tatrAgatya suprasanno mune'tipremasaMkulaH ॥ harSayaMstAM zailapatnI menAntvaM vAkyamabravIH। ॥ 6 ॥
Reaching there, O sage, with great affection and delight, you spoke to the great pleasure of Mena, the wife of Himavat.

Nārada said: O Mena of wide eyes, see the excellent features of Śiva. The merciful Śiva has taken great pity on us.

Brahmā said: Extremely surprised on hearing your words, Menā the beloved wife of the mountain, saw Śiva’s form that afforded great bliss.

कोटिसूर्यप्रतीकाशं सर्वावयवसुन्दरम् ॥ विचित्रवसनं चात्र नानाभूषणभूषितम् ॥ ९ ॥
koTisUryapratIkAzaM sarvAvayavasundaram ॥ vicitravasanaM cAtra nAnAbhUSaNabhUSitam ॥ 9 ॥
It was as refulgent as that of a thousand suns. Every part of the body was exquisite. The garments were of variegated colours. He was embellished with different ornaments.

सुप्रसन्नं सुहासं च सुलावण्यं मनोहरम् ॥ गौराभं द्युतिसंयुक्तं चन्द्ररेखाविभूषितम्। ॥2-3-45-१०॥
suprasannaM suhAsaM ca sulAvaNyaM manoharam ॥ gaurAbhaM dyutisaMyuktaM candrarekhAvibhUSitam। ॥2-3-45-10॥
He was smiling with great delight. His comeliness was highly pleasing. He was fair-complexioned and lustrous. The crescent moon added to his beauty.

sarvairdevagaNaiH prItyA viSNvAdyassevitaM tathA॥ sUryeNa cchatritaM mUrdhni candreNa ca vizobhitam॥11॥
Viṣṇu and other gods lovingly served Him. The sun acted as His royal umbrella. The moon embellished Him.

सर्वथा रमणीयं च भूषितस्य विभूषणैः ॥ वाहनस्य महाशोभा वर्णितुं नैव शक्यते ॥१२॥
sarvathA ramaNIyaM ca bhUSitasya vibhUSaNaiH ॥ vAhanasya mahAzobhA varNituM naiva zakyate ॥12॥
In every way He was extremely handsome bedecked in ornaments. It was impossible to describe adequately the great beauty of His vehicle.

गंगा च यमुना चैव विधत्तः स्म सुचामरे॥ सिद्धयोऽष्टौ पुरस्तस्य कुर्वन्ति स्म सुनर्त्तनम् ॥१३॥
gaMgA ca yamunA caiva vidhattaH sma sucAmare॥ siddhayo'STau purastasya kurvanti sma sunarttanam ॥13॥
The Gaṅgā and the Yamunā were waving the Chowries. The eight Siddhis danced in front of Him.

mayA caiva tadA viSNurindrAdyA hyamarAstathA ॥ svaM svaM veSaM susambhUSya girizenAcaranyutAH ॥14॥
Viṣṇu, I, Indra and the other gods bedecked their bodies and dress and accompanied Śiva.

tathA jayeti bhASanto nAnArUpA gaNAstadA ॥ svalaGkRtamahAmodA girIzapurato'caran ॥ 15 ॥
The Gaṇas of various forms and features shouted cries of “Victory” “Victory” and walked in front of Śiva.

सिद्धाश्चोपसुरास्सर्वे मुनयश्च महासुखाः ॥ ययुश्शिवेन सुप्रीतास्सकलाश्चापरे तथा॥१६॥
siddhAzcopasurAssarve munayazca mahAsukhAH ॥ yayuzzivena suprItAssakalAzcApare tathA॥16॥
The Siddhas, the secondary gods, the extremely delighted sages went in company of Śiva. The others too were equally delighted.

एवन्देवादयस्सर्वे कुतूहलसमन्विताः ॥ परंब्रह्म गृणन्तस्ते स्वपत्नीभिरलंकृताः ॥१७॥
evandevAdayassarve kutUhalasamanvitAH ॥ paraMbrahma gRNantaste svapatnIbhiralaMkRtAH ॥17॥
Thus the fully decorated gods, were very jubilant and in the company of their wives they eulogised Śiva, the Supreme Brahman.

vizvAvasumukhAstatra hyapsarogaNasaMyutAH ॥ gAyantopyagratastasya paramaM zAGkaraM yazaH ॥ 18 ॥
Viśvāvasu and others along with the celestial damsels sang songs of Śiva’s glory.

इत्थं महोत्सवस्तत्र बभूव मुनिस त्तम ॥ नानाविधो महेशे हि शैलद्वारि च गच्छति ॥ १९ ॥
itthaM mahotsavastatra babhUva munisa ttama ॥ nAnAvidho maheze hi zailadvAri ca gacchati ॥ 19 ॥
O excellent sage, when Śiva was nearing the threshold of the palace of Himavat, there was much jubilation there.

tasmiMzca samaye tatra suSamA yA parAtmanaH ॥ varNituM tAM vizeSeNa kazzaknoti munIzvara ॥ 2-3-45-20 ॥
O excellent sage, who can describe the exquisite splendour of the supreme lord at that time.

तथाविधं च तन्दृष्ट्वा मेना चित्रगता इव ॥ क्षणमासीत्ततः प्रीत्या प्रोवाच वचनं मुने ॥ २१ ॥
tathAvidhaM ca tandRSTvA menA citragatA iva ॥ kSaNamAsIttataH prItyA provAca vacanaM mune ॥ 21 ॥
On seeing Him in that form Menā stood stunned as though drawn in a picture for a moment, O sage, and spoke these words.

मेनोवाच ॥ धन्या पुत्री मदीया च यया तप्तं महत्तपः ॥ यत्प्रभावान्महेशान त्वं प्राप्त इह मद्गृहे ॥२२॥
menovAca ॥ dhanyA putrI madIyA ca yayA taptaM mahattapaH ॥ yatprabhAvAnmahezAna tvaM prApta iha madgRhe ॥22॥
Menā said: O great lord, my daughter is indeed blessed, she by whom the great penance was performed. It is by virtue of that penance that you have come to my threshold.

mayA kRtA purA yA vai zivanindA duratyayA ॥ tAM kSamasva zivAsvAminsuprasanno bhavAdhunA ॥ 23 ॥
O lord of Pārvatī, be pleased now. Pardon me for the heap of repulsive words I showered on Śiva.

brahmovAca ॥ itthaM sambhASya sA menA saMstUyendulalATakam ॥ sAJjaliH praNatA zailapriyA lajjAparA'bhavat ॥ 24 ॥
Brahmā said: After saying thus and eulogising the moon-crested lord, Menā, the beloved of the mountain, bowed to Him with palms joined in reverence and stood shy.

tAvatstriyassamAjagmurhitvA kAmAnanekazaH ॥ bahvyastAH puravAsinyazzivadarzanalAlasAH ॥ 25 ॥
By that time the ladies of the town left the work they were engaged in, in their eagerness to see Śiva.

majjanaM kurvatI kAcittaccUrNasahitA yayau ॥ draSTuM kutUhalADhyA ca zaGkaraM girijAvaram ॥ 26 ॥
A certain lady in the midst of her bath and toilet was overwhelmed with the desire to see Śiva, the bridegroom of Pārvatī. She came out with the shampoo powder still held in her hands.

kAcittu svAminassevAM sakhIyuktA vihAya ca ॥ sucAmarakarA prItyAgAcchambhordarzanAya vai ॥ 27 ॥
A certain lady engaged in fanning her husband in the company of her maid left that job and came out to see Śiva with the fan still in her hands.

kAcittu bAlakaM hitvA pibantaM stanyamAdarAt॥ atRptaM zaGkarandraSTuM yayau darzanalAlasA ॥28॥
Another lady engaged in suckling her babe at her breast left him dissatisfied and came out eagerly to see the lord.

razanAM badhnatI kAcittayaiva sahitA yayau ॥ vasanaM viparItaM vai dhRtvA kAcidyayau tataH॥29॥
Another lady engaged in trying her waist girdle came out with it. Another lady came out with garments worn inside out.

bhojanArthaM sthitaM kAntaM hitvA kAcidyayau priyA॥ draSTuM zivAvaraM prItyA satRSNA sakutUhalA॥2-3-45-30॥
Another lady left her husband who had sat down to dine and came out athirsting and enthusiastic to see the bridegroom.

काचिद्धस्ते शलाकां च धृत्वांजनकरा प्रिया ॥ अञ्जित्वैकाक्षि सन्द्रष्टुं ययौ शैलसुतावरम्॥३१॥
kAciddhaste zalAkAM ca dhRtvAMjanakarA priyA ॥ aJjitvaikAkSi sandraSTuM yayau zailasutAvaram॥31॥
A certain lady holding the collyrium in her hand after applying it to one of her eyes came out to see the bridegroom of the daughter of the mountain with the salve stick still in her hand.

काचित्तु कामिनी पादौ रञ्जयन्ती ह्यलक्तकैः ॥ श्रुत्वा घोषं च तद्धित्वा दर्शनार्थमुपागता ॥ ३२ ॥
kAcittu kAminI pAdau raJjayantI hyalaktakaiH ॥ zrutvA ghoSaM ca taddhitvA darzanArthamupAgatA ॥ 32 ॥
Another damsel engaged in applying the red lac juice to her feet heard the tumult outside and so left it in the middle and came out to see the procession.

इत्यादि विविधं कार्यं हित्वा वासं स्त्रियो ययुः ॥ दृष्ट्वा तु शांकरं रूपं मोहं प्राप्तास्तदाऽभवन् ॥ ३३ ॥
ityAdi vividhaM kAryaM hitvA vAsaM striyo yayuH ॥ dRSTvA tu zAMkaraM rUpaM mohaM prAptAstadA'bhavan ॥ 33 ॥
Thus the ladies forsook their activities, left their houses and came out. On seeing the exquisite form of Śiva they were greatly fascinated.

Delighted on seeing Śiva and overwhelmed by affection they cherished the comely form in their hearts and spoke as follows:

पुरवासिन्य ऊचुः॥ नेत्राणि सफलान्यासन्हिमवत्पुरवासिनाम् ॥ यो योऽपश्यददो रूपं तस्य वै सार्थकं जनुः ॥३५॥
puravAsinya UcuH॥ netrANi saphalAnyAsanhimavatpuravAsinAm ॥ yo yo'pazyadado rUpaM tasya vai sArthakaM januH ॥35॥
The ladies said: The eyes of the residents of this town have become fruitful. The life of the persons who have seen this comely form has become meaningful.

तस्यैव सफलं जन्म तस्यैव सफलाः क्रियाः ॥ येन दृष्टश्शिवस्साक्षात्सर्वपापप्रणाशकः ॥३६॥
tasyaiva saphalaM janma tasyaiva saphalAH kriyAH ॥ yena dRSTazzivassAkSAtsarvapApapraNAzakaH ॥36॥
The life is fruitful and the rites are fruitful only of the person who has seen Śiva, the destroyer of all sins.

पार्वत्या साधितं सर्वं शिवार्थं यत्तपः कृतम् ॥ धन्येयं कृतकृत्येयं शिवा प्राप्य शिवम्पतिम् ॥ ३७ ॥
pArvatyA sAdhitaM sarvaM zivArthaM yattapaH kRtam ॥ dhanyeyaM kRtakRtyeyaM zivA prApya zivampatim ॥ 37 ॥
Pārvatī has accomplished everything inasmuch as she performed penance for Śiva. She is blessed, she is contented in securing Śiva as her husband.

यदीदं युगलं ब्रह्मा न युंज्याच्छिवयोर्मुदा ॥ तदा च सकलोऽप्यस्य श्रमो निष्फलतामियात् ॥ ३८ ॥
yadIdaM yugalaM brahmA na yuMjyAcchivayormudA ॥ tadA ca sakalo'pyasya zramo niSphalatAmiyAt ॥ 38 ॥
If Brahmā had not joined this pair, Śiva and Śivā, his endeavour of creation would have entirely become fruitless.

सम्यक् कृतं तथा चात्र योजितं युग्ममुत्तमम् ॥ सर्वेषां सार्थता जाता सर्वकार्यसमुद्भवा ॥ ३९ ॥
samyak kRtaM tathA cAtra yojitaM yugmamuttamam ॥ sarveSAM sArthatA jAtA sarvakAryasamudbhavA ॥ 39 ॥
This is well done. The excellent pair has been united. Everything has become meaningful in every activity.

vinA tu tapasA zambhordarzanaM durlabhannRNAm ॥ darzanAcchaMkarasyaiva sarve yAtAH kRtArthatAm ॥ 2-3-45-40 ॥
A vision of Śiva is inaccessible to men without penance. All of us have now become contented by seeing Śiva.

Just as Lakṣmī was blessed by securing Viṣṇu as her lord, formerly, so also the gentle lady Pārvatī has become embellished on securing Śiva.

brahmANaM ca yathA lebhe svAminaM vai sarasvatI ॥ tathAsau pArvatI devI haramprApya subhUSitA ॥42॥
Just as Sarasvatī was blessed by securing Brahmā as her husband, so also the gentle lady Pārvatī has become embellished on getting Śiva as her husband.

vayandhanyAH striyassarvAH puruSAssakalA varAH ॥ ye ye pazyanti sarvezaM zaMkaraM girijApatim ॥43॥
All of us, men and women, are blessed—we who see Śiva, the lord of all, the husband of Pārvatī.
