brahmovAca ॥ vasiSThasya vacaH zrutvA sagaNopi himAlayaH ॥ vismito bhAryyayA zailAnuvAca sa girIzvaraH ॥1॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of the seven sages, Himācala, his wife and attendants were very much surprised. The lord of the mountains spoke to the other mountains.

himAlaya uvAca ॥ he mero girirAT sahya gandhamAdana mandara ॥ mainAka vindhya zailendrAssarve zRNuta madvacaH ॥ 2 ॥
Himācala said: O lord of mountains—Meru, O Sahya O Gandhamādana, O Mandara, O Maināka, O Vindhya, all of you listen to my words.

वसिष्ठो हि वदत्येवं किं मे कार्य्यं विचार्य्यते ॥ यथा तथा च शंसध्वं निर्णीय मनसाखिलम् ॥ ३ ॥
vasiSTho hi vadatyevaM kiM me kAryyaM vicAryyate ॥ yathA tathA ca zaMsadhvaM nirNIya manasAkhilam ॥ 3 ॥
Vasiṣṭha says like this. It is to be considered what I shall do now. You consider well, decide and let me know.

brahmovAca ॥ tacchutvA vacanaM tasya sumerupramukhAzca te ॥ procurhimAlayaM prItyA sunirNIya mahIdharAH ॥4॥
Brahmā said: On hearing his words, Sumeru and other mountains decided carefully and spoke to Himalaya lovingly.

शैला ऊचुः ॥ अधुना किं विमर्शेन कृतं कार्य्यं तथैव हि ॥ उत्पन्नेयं महाभाग देवकार्यार्थमेव हि ॥५॥
zailA UcuH ॥ adhunA kiM vimarzena kRtaM kAryyaM tathaiva hi ॥ utpanneyaM mahAbhAga devakAryArthameva hi ॥5॥
The mountains said: Of what avail is a long discussion and deliberation now? What should be done is only that. She is born only for the purpose of the gods.

प्रदातव्या शिवायेति शिवस्यार्थेवतारिणी ॥ अनयाराधितो रुद्रो रुद्रेण यदि भाषिता ॥६॥
pradAtavyA zivAyeti zivasyArthevatAriNI ॥ anayArAdhito rudro rudreNa yadi bhASitA ॥6॥
Incarnating for the sake of Śiva, she shall be given to Śiva. Śiva has been propitiated by her and Śiva has also spoken to her.

ब्रह्मोवाच॥ एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तेषाम्मेर्वादीनां हिमाचलः ॥ सुप्रसन्नतरोभूद्वै जहास गिरिजा हृदि ॥ ७ ॥
brahmovAca॥ etacchrutvA vacasteSAmmervAdInAM himAcalaH ॥ suprasannatarobhUdvai jahAsa girijA hRdi ॥ 7 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of Meru and others, Himācala was greatly pleased and Pārvatī laughed within herself.

अरुन्धती च तां मेनां बोधयामास कारणात् ॥ नानावाक्यसमूहेनेतिहासैर्विविधैरपि ॥ ८ ॥
arundhatI ca tAM menAM bodhayAmAsa kAraNAt ॥ nAnAvAkyasamUhenetihAsairvividhairapi ॥ 8 ॥
Arundhatī too convinced Menā with reasoned statements and examples from various mythological legends.

अथ सा मेनका शैलपत्नी बुद्ध्वा प्रसन्नधीः ॥ मुनीनरुन्धतीं शैलं भोजयित्वा बुभोज च ॥ ९ ॥
atha sA menakA zailapatnI buddhvA prasannadhIH ॥ munInarundhatIM zailaM bhojayitvA bubhoja ca ॥ 9 ॥
Then the wife of the mountain too was delightedly convinced. She entertained Arundhatī, the sages and the mountain with a grand feast and then took food herself.

अथ शैलवरो ज्ञानी सुसंसेव्य मुनींश्च ताम् ॥ उवाच साञ्जलिः प्रीत्या प्रसन्नात्मागतभ्रमः॥ 2-3-36-१० ॥
atha zailavaro jJAnI susaMsevya munIMzca tAm ॥ uvAca sAJjaliH prItyA prasannAtmAgatabhramaH॥ 2-3-36-10 ॥
Then the chief of mountains, freed from wrong notions and grown wise, spoke with palms joined in reverence and mind extremely delighted.

हिमाचल उवाच ॥ सप्तर्षयो महाभागा वचः शृणुत मामकम् ॥ विस्मयो मे गतस्सर्वश्शिवयोश्चरितं श्रुतम् ॥ ११ ॥।
himAcala uvAca ॥ saptarSayo mahAbhAgA vacaH zRNuta mAmakam ॥ vismayo me gatassarvazzivayozcaritaM zrutam ॥ 11 ॥।
Himācala said: O fortunate sages, please listen to my words. All my bewilderment has vanished since I have heard the story of Śiva and Śiva.

मदीयं च शरीरम्वै पत्नी मेना सुतास्सुता ॥ ऋद्धिस्सिद्धिश्च चान्यद्वै शिवस्यैव न चान्यथा ॥ १२॥
madIyaM ca zarIramvai patnI menA sutAssutA ॥ Rddhissiddhizca cAnyadvai zivasyaiva na cAnyathA ॥ 12॥
Everything that I possess, my body, wife, Menā, sons, daughter, assets and achievements and other things belong to Śiva and not otherwise.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा स तदा पुत्रीं दृष्ट्वा तत्सादरं च ताम् ॥ भूषयित्वा तदङ्गानि ऋष्युत्संगे न्यवेशयेत्॥ १३॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityuktvA sa tadA putrIM dRSTvA tatsAdaraM ca tAm ॥ bhUSayitvA tadaGgAni RSyutsaMge nyavezayet॥ 13॥
Brahmā said: After saying so, he bedecked his daughter with various ornaments. Then he took them all and placed them on the lap of the sage saying “These are the presents I have to give her.”

उवाच च पुनः प्रीत्या शैलराज ऋषींस्तदा॥। अयं भागो मया तस्मै दातव्य इति निश्चितम् ॥ १४॥
uvAca ca punaH prItyA zailarAja RSIMstadA॥। ayaM bhAgo mayA tasmai dAtavya iti nizcitam ॥ 14॥
Then, the King of Mountains (Śailarāja) again spoke to the sages with affection: "This portion (of merit or offering) is to be given by me to Him (Shiva) — such is my firm decision."

॥ ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ शंकरो भिक्षुकस्तेथ स्वयं दाता भवान् गिरे ॥ भैक्ष्यञ्च पार्वती देवी किमतः परमुत्तमम् ॥ १५॥
॥ RSaya UcuH ॥ zaMkaro bhikSukastetha svayaM dAtA bhavAn gire ॥ bhaikSyaJca pArvatI devI kimataH paramuttamam ॥ 15॥
The sages said: O mountain, you are the donor, Śiva is the mendicant, and the alms goddess Pārvatī. What else can be better than this ?

हिमवन् शिखराणान्ते यद्धेतोस्सदृशी गतिः ॥ धन्यस्त्वं सर्वशैलानामधिपस्सर्वतो वरः ॥ १६ ॥
himavan zikharANAnte yaddhetossadRzI gatiH ॥ dhanyastvaM sarvazailAnAmadhipassarvato varaH ॥ 16 ॥
Since the course of your summits is befitting, you are blessed, you are the chief of all mountains, you are great in every respect.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ एवमुक्त्वा तु कन्यायै मुनयो विमलाशयाः ॥ आशिषं दत्तवन्तस्ते शिवाय सुखदा भव ॥१७॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ evamuktvA tu kanyAyai munayo vimalAzayAH ॥ AziSaM dattavantaste zivAya sukhadA bhava ॥17॥
Brahmā said: After saying thus, the sages of pure mind offered their blessings to the girl—“Be pleasing to Śiva.”

स्पृष्ट्वा करेण तां तत्र कल्याणं ते भविष्यति ॥ शुक्लपक्षे यथा चन्द्रो वर्द्धन्तां त्वद्गुणास्तथा॥ १८॥
spRSTvA kareNa tAM tatra kalyANaM te bhaviSyati ॥ zuklapakSe yathA candro varddhantAM tvadguNAstathA॥ 18॥
They touched her with their hands and continued—“Everything will be well with you. As the moon in the bright half of the month, may your qualities increase.”

इत्युक्त्वा मुनयस्सर्वे दत्त्वा ते गिरये मुदा ॥ पुष्पाणि फलयुक्तानि प्रत्ययं चक्रिरे तदा ॥ १९ ॥
ityuktvA munayassarve dattvA te giraye mudA ॥ puSpANi phalayuktAni pratyayaM cakrire tadA ॥ 19 ॥
After saying thus and offering fruits and flowers to the lord of mountains, the sages made him believe that the alliance was a settled fact.

अरुन्धती तदा तत्र मेनां सा सुसुखी मुदा ॥ गुणैश्च लोभयामास शिवस्य परमा सती ॥ 2-3-36-२० ॥
arundhatI tadA tatra menAM sA susukhI mudA ॥ guNaizca lobhayAmAsa zivasya paramA satI ॥ 2-3-36-20 ॥
The great chaste lady Arundhatī tempted Menā further with Śiva’s good qualities.

हरिद्राकुंकुमैश्शैलश्मश्रूणि प्रत्यमार्जयत् ॥ लौकिकाचारमाधाय मंगलायनमुत्तमम् ॥ २१ ॥
haridrAkuMkumaizzailazmazrUNi pratyamArjayat ॥ laukikAcAramAdhAya maMgalAyanamuttamam ॥ 21 ॥
According to the worldly convention they smeared the moustache of the mountain with powdered turmeric and saffron as an auspicious custom.

ततश्च ते चतुर्थेह्नि संधार्य्य लग्नमुत्तमम् ॥ परस्परं च सन्तुष्य संजग्मुश्शिवसन्निधिम्॥२२॥
tatazca te caturthehni saMdhAryya lagnamuttamam ॥ parasparaM ca santuSya saMjagmuzzivasannidhim॥22॥
After fixing the auspicious Lagna for the marriage and congratulating and complimenting one another the sages came to Śiva’s abode on the fourth day.

तत्र गत्वा शिवं नत्वा स्तुत्वा विवि धसूक्तिभिः ॥ ऊचुः सर्वे वसिष्ठाद्या मुनयः परमेश्वरम् ॥२३॥
tatra gatvA zivaM natvA stutvA vivi dhasUktibhiH ॥ UcuH sarve vasiSThAdyA munayaH paramezvaram ॥23॥
After reaching the place, Vasiṣṭha and other sages bowed to Śiva and eulogised Him with different hymns. They then spoke to lord Śiva.

ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ देवदेव महादेव परमेश महाप्रभो ॥ शृण्वस्मद्वचनं प्रीत्या यत्कृतं सेवकैस्तव ॥ २४ ॥
RSaya UcuH ॥ devadeva mahAdeva parameza mahAprabho ॥ zRNvasmadvacanaM prItyA yatkRtaM sevakaistava ॥ 24 ॥
The sages said: O lord Śiva, lord of the gods, O great lord Śiva, please listen lovingly to the narration of what we, your attendants, have done.

बोधितो गिरिराजश्च मेना विविधसूक्तिभिः ॥ सेतिहासं महेशान प्रबुद्धोसौ न संशयः॥२५॥
bodhito girirAjazca menA vividhasUktibhiH ॥ setihAsaM mahezAna prabuddhosau na saMzayaH॥25॥
O great lord, the lord of mountains and Menā have been urged with different kinds of statements and examples from mythological legends. Undoubtedly he is enlightened.

वाक्यदत्ता गिरीन्द्रेण पार्वती ते हि नान्यथा ॥ उद्वाहाय प्रगच्छ त्वं गणैर्देवैश्च संयुतः ॥२६॥
vAkyadattA girIndreNa pArvatI te hi nAnyathA ॥ udvAhAya pragaccha tvaM gaNairdevaizca saMyutaH ॥26॥
Pārvatī has been betrothed to you by the lord of mountains. It is not otherwise. Now please start for the marriage with your attendants and the gods.

गच्छ शीघ्रं महादेव हिमाचलगृहं प्रभो ॥ विवाहय यथा रीतिः पार्वतीमात्मजन्मने ॥२७॥
gaccha zIghraM mahAdeva himAcalagRhaM prabho ॥ vivAhaya yathA rItiH pArvatImAtmajanmane ॥27॥
O great god, O lord, go to the abode of Himācala and marry Pārvatī in accordance with the customs for the sake of a son.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ tacchrutvA vacanaM teSAM laukikAcAratatparaH॥ prahRSTAtmA mahezAnaH prahasyedamuvAca saH ॥28॥
Brahmā said: On hearing their words, lord Śiva who was delighted and who loved to follow worldly conventions laughed and said:

महेश उवाच ॥ विवाहो हि महाभागा न दृष्टो न श्रुतो मया ॥ यथा पुरा भवद्भिस्तद्विधिः प्रोच्यो विशेषतः ॥ २९ ॥
maheza uvAca ॥ vivAho hi mahAbhAgA na dRSTo na zruto mayA ॥ yathA purA bhavadbhistadvidhiH procyo vizeSataH ॥ 29 ॥
Lord Śiva said: O fortunate one, a marriage ceremony has never been witnessed nor even heard of by me before. The details of the same shall be mentioned by you all, specifically.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ तदाकर्ण्य महेशस्य लौकिकं वचनं शुभम् ॥ प्रत्यूचुः प्रहसन्तस्ते देवदेवं सदाशिवम् ॥ 2-3-36-३० ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ tadAkarNya mahezasya laukikaM vacanaM zubham ॥ pratyUcuH prahasantaste devadevaM sadAzivam ॥ 2-3-36-30 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these words in a worldly vein uttered by Śiva they laughingly replied to Sadāśiva, lord of the gods.

ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ विष्णुमाहूय वै शीघ्रं ससमाजं विशेषतः ॥ ब्रह्माणं ससुतं प्रीत्या तथा देवं शतक्रतुम् ॥ ३१ ॥
RSaya UcuH ॥ viSNumAhUya vai zIghraM sasamAjaM vizeSataH ॥ brahmANaM sasutaM prItyA tathA devaM zatakratum ॥ 31 ॥
The sages said: Quickly invite Viṣṇu along with his full retinue, Also invite Brahmā with his sons lovingly, and Indra (Śatakratu), the king of the gods.

तथा ऋषिगणान्सर्वान् यक्षगन्धर्वकिन्नरान् ॥ सिद्धान् विद्याधरांश्चैव तथा चैवाप्सरोगणान् ॥३२॥
tathA RSigaNAnsarvAn yakSagandharvakinnarAn ॥ siddhAn vidyAdharAMzcaiva tathA caivApsarogaNAn ॥32॥
Also summon all the sages, along with Yakṣas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Siddhas, Vidyādharas, and likewise the groups of Apsarās (celestial nymphs).

एतांश्चान्यान्प्रभो सर्वानानय स्वेह सादरम् ॥ सर्वं संसाधयिष्यन्ति त्वत्कार्य्यं ते न संशयः ॥३३॥
etAMzcAnyAnprabho sarvAnAnaya sveha sAdaram ॥ sarvaM saMsAdhayiSyanti tvatkAryyaM te na saMzayaH ॥33॥
O Lord, bring all these beings here respectfully and with affection. They will accomplish everything needed for your task — of that, there is no doubt.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा सप्त ऋषयस्तदाज्ञां प्राप्य ते मुदा ॥ स्वधाम प्रययुस्सर्वे शंसन्तः शङ्करीं गतिम् ॥ ३४ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityuktvA sapta RSayastadAjJAM prApya te mudA ॥ svadhAma prayayussarve zaMsantaH zaGkarIM gatim ॥ 34 ॥
Brahmā said: Saying this and taking His permission the seven sages joyfully returned to their abodes praising the way of Śiva.
