Vasiṣtha said: The king Anaraṇya hailed from the race of the fourteenth Manu Indrasāvarṇi.

anaraNyo nRpazreSThassa ptadvIpamahIpatiH ॥ zambhubhakto vizeSeNa maGgalAraNyajo balI ॥2॥
The great king Anaraṇya, born of Maṅgalāraṇya was very strong. He was a special devotee of Śiva and ruled over the seven continents.

bhRguM purodhasaM kRtvA zataM yajJAMzcakAra saH ॥ na svIcakAra zakratvaM dIyamAnaM surairapi ॥3॥
Having Bhṛgu as his priest he performed a hundred sacrifices. He did not accept the position of Indra even when offered by the gods.

babhUvazzataputrAzca rAjJastasya himAlaya ॥ kanyaikA sundarI nAmnA padmA padmAlayA samA ॥ 4 ॥
O Himavat, hundred sons were born to him and a beautiful daughter Padmā who was equal to Lakṣmī.

O excellent mountain, he was more fond of his daughter than of his hundred sons.

prANAdhikAH priyatamA mahiSyassarvayoSitaH ॥ nRpasya patnyaH paJcAsansarvAssaubhAgyasaMyutA ॥ 6 ॥
He had five queens who were endowed with great qualities and fortunes and were loved by him over and above his life.

sA kanyA yauvanasthA ca babhUva svapiturgRhe ॥ patraM prasthApayAmAsa suvarAna yanAyasaH ॥ 7 ॥
The girl entered the prime of her youth in her father’s palace. The king issued letters of invitation for the requisition of good bridegrooms.

एकदा पिप्पलादर्षिर्गर्न्तुं स्वाश्रममुत्सुकः ॥ तपःस्थाने निर्जने च गन्धर्वं स ददर्श ह ॥८॥
ekadA pippalAdarSirgarntuM svAzramamutsukaH ॥ tapaHsthAne nirjane ca gandharvaM sa dadarza ha ॥8॥
In the meantime the sage Pippalāda eagerly hastening back to his hermitage saw a certain Gandharva in an isolated place in the penance-grove.

स्त्रीयुतं मग्नचित्तं च शृङ्गारे रससागरे ॥ विहरन्तं महाप्रेम्णा कामशास्त्रविशारदम् ॥ ९॥
strIyutaM magnacittaM ca zRGgAre rasasAgare ॥ viharantaM mahApremNA kAmazAstravizAradam ॥ 9॥
The Gandharva was an expert in the science of erotics. He was in the company of a woman. He was therefore completely submerged in the ocean of pleasure, sexual dalliance and was lusty.

dRSTvA taM munizArdUlaH sakAmaH saMbabhUva saH ॥ tapatsvadattacittazcAciMtayaddArasaMgraham ॥ 2-3-34-10 ॥
On seeing him the great sage became very lustful. He lost interest in penance and began to think of acquiring a wife.

evaMvRttasya tasyaiva pippalAdasya sanmuneH॥ kiyatkAlo gatastatra kAmonmathitacetasaH ॥11॥
Thus the good sage spent a long time with his mind utterly agitated by pangs of love.

एकदा पुष्पभद्रायां स्नातुं गच्छन्मुनीश्वरः ॥ ददर्श पद्मां युवतीं पद्मामिव मनोरमाम् ॥१२॥
ekadA puSpabhadrAyAM snAtuM gacchanmunIzvaraH ॥ dadarza padmAM yuvatIM padmAmiva manoramAm ॥12॥
Once while the good sage was on his way to the river Puṣpabhadrā for taking his bath he happened to see the young maiden Padmā who was as charming as goddess Lakṣmī.

केयं कन्येति पप्रच्छ समीपस्थाञ्जनान्मुनिः ॥ जना निवेदयांचक्रुर्नत्वा शापनियन्त्रिताः ॥१३॥
keyaM kanyeti papraccha samIpasthAJjanAnmuniH ॥ janA nivedayAMcakrurnatvA zApaniyantritAH ॥13॥
The sage asked the persons standing by—“Who is this girl?” The people, afraid of the curse bowed to the sage and replied.

जना ऊचुः ॥ अनरण्यसुतेयं वै पद्मा नाम रमापरा॥ वरारोहा प्रार्थ्यमाना नृपश्रेष्ठैर्गुणालया ॥ १४ ॥
janA UcuH ॥ anaraNyasuteyaM vai padmA nAma ramAparA॥ varArohA prArthyamAnA nRpazreSThairguNAlayA ॥ 14 ॥
The people said: This excellent lady, the repository of all good qualities, is the daughter of Anaraṇya and is called Padmā. She is another Lakṣmī (goddess of fortune). She is being wooed by great kings.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा स मुनिर्वाक्यं जनानां तथ्यवादिनाम् ॥ चुक्षोभातीव मनसि तल्लिप्सुर भवच्च सः ॥ १५ ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ tacchrutvA sa munirvAkyaM janAnAM tathyavAdinAm ॥ cukSobhAtIva manasi tallipsura bhavacca saH ॥ 15 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of the people who spoke the truth, the sage became much agitated in the mind and was eager to possess her.

मुनिः स्नात्वाभीष्टदेवं सम्पूज्य विधिवच्छिवम् ॥ जगाम कामी भिक्षार्थमनरण्यसभां गिरे ॥ १६ ॥
muniH snAtvAbhISTadevaM sampUjya vidhivacchivam ॥ jagAma kAmI bhikSArthamanaraNyasabhAM gire ॥ 16 ॥
O mountain, the sage took bath and worshipped his favourite deity Śiva duly. The lustful sage went to the council-chamber of Anaraṇya for the sake of alms.

राजा शीघ्रं मुनिं दृष्ट्वा प्रणनाम भयाकुलः ॥ मधुपर्कादिकं दत्त्वा पूजयामास भक्तितः ॥१७॥
rAjA zIghraM muniM dRSTvA praNanAma bhayAkulaH ॥ madhuparkAdikaM dattvA pUjayAmAsa bhaktitaH ॥17॥
Immediately after seeing the sage, the king was struck with awe and bowed to him. He offered him homage (Madhuparka) and devoutly worshipped him.

कामात्सर्वं गृहीत्वा च ययाचे कन्यकां मुनिः ॥ मौनी बभूव नृपतिः किञ्चिनिर्वक्तुमक्षमः ॥ १८ ॥
kAmAtsarvaM gRhItvA ca yayAce kanyakAM muniH ॥ maunI babhUva nRpatiH kiJcinirvaktumakSamaH ॥ 18 ॥
Out of love, the sage accepted everything and ultimately requested for the hand of his daughter. The king kept quiet, being unable to give any decisive reply.

मुनिर्ययाचे कन्यां स तां देहीति नृपेश्वर ॥ अन्यथा भस्मसात्सर्वं करिष्यामि क्षणेन च ॥ १९ ॥
muniryayAce kanyAM sa tAM dehIti nRpezvara ॥ anyathA bhasmasAtsarvaM kariSyAmi kSaNena ca ॥ 19 ॥
The sage repeated his request saying—“O great king, give me your daughter. Otherwise in a trice I will reduce everything to ashes”.

सर्वे बभूववुराच्छन्ना गणास्तत्तेजसा मुने ॥ रुरोद राजा सगणो दृष्ट्वा विप्रं जरातुरम् ॥ 2-3-34-२० ॥
sarve babhUvavurAcchannA gaNAstattejasA mune ॥ ruroda rAjA sagaNo dRSTvA vipraM jarAturam ॥ 2-3-34-20 ॥
The king and his attendants were overwhelmed by the splendour of the sage. Staring at the old emaciated brahmin, they began to cry.

महिष्यो रुरुदुस्सर्वा इतिकर्त्तव्यताक्षमाः ॥ मूर्च्छामाप महाराज्ञी कन्यामाता शुचाकुला ॥ २१ ॥
mahiSyo rurudussarvA itikarttavyatAkSamAH ॥ mUrcchAmApa mahArAjJI kanyAmAtA zucAkulA ॥ 21 ॥
The queens, knowing not what shall be done, lamented. The chief queen, the mother of the girl, fell unconscious in the excess of her grief.

बभूवुस्तनयास्सर्वे शोकाकुलि तमानसाः ॥ सर्वं शोकाकुलं जातं नृपसम्बन्धि शैलप ॥ २२ ॥
babhUvustanayAssarve zokAkuli tamAnasAH ॥ sarvaM zokAkulaM jAtaM nRpasambandhi zailapa ॥ 22 ॥
The brothers of the girl were agitated with sorrow. O lord of mountains, everything and every one connected with the king was overwhelmed with grief.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे प्राज्ञो द्विजो गुरुरनुत्तमः ॥ पुरोहितश्च मतिमानागतो नृपसन्निधिम् ॥२३॥
etasminnantare prAjJo dvijo gururanuttamaH ॥ purohitazca matimAnAgato nRpasannidhim ॥23॥
In the meantime the wise brahmin, the excellent preceptor of the king, as well as his intelligent priest came there.

राजा प्रणम्य सम्पूज्य रुरोद च तयोः पुरः ॥ सर्वं निवेदयांचक्रे पप्रच्छोचितमाशु तत् ॥२४॥
rAjA praNamya sampUjya ruroda ca tayoH puraH ॥ sarvaM nivedayAMcakre papracchocitamAzu tat ॥24॥
The king bowed to them and paid homage. He cried before them. He explained to them everything and asked them what was the proper step to be taken immediately.

अथ राज्ञो गुरुर्विप्रः पण्डितश्च पुरोहितः ॥ अपि द्वौ शास्त्रनीतिज्ञौ बोधयामासतुर्नृपम् ॥ २५ ॥
atha rAjJo gururvipraH paNDitazca purohitaH ॥ api dvau zAstranItijJau bodhayAmAsaturnRpam ॥ 25 ॥
Then, the king’s guru — a learned Brahmin and the royal priest (purohita), Both of whom were well-versed in scriptures and ethics — began to instruct the king.

शोकाकुलाश्च महिषीर्नृपबालाँश्च कन्यकाम् ॥ उत्तमा नीतिमादृत्य सर्वेषां हितकारिणीम् ॥२६॥
zokAkulAzca mahiSIrnRpabAlA~zca kanyakAm ॥ uttamA nItimAdRtya sarveSAM hitakAriNIm ॥26॥
The queens, overwhelmed with grief, and the king’s young sons desired the princess — Who was noble, honored for her moral conduct, and a well-wisher to all.

गुरुपुरोधसावूचतुः॥ शृणु राजन्महाप्राज्ञ वचो नौ सद्धितावहम् ॥ मा शुचः सपरीवारश्शास्त्रे कुरु मतिं सतीम् ॥२७॥
gurupurodhasAvUcatuH॥ zRNu rAjanmahAprAjJa vaco nau saddhitAvaham ॥ mA zucaH saparIvArazzAstre kuru matiM satIm ॥27॥
The preceptor and the priest said: O wise king, listen to our beneficial words. Do not be anxious. In the company of your kinsmen turn your good attention to the sacred texts.

अद्य वाब्ददिनान्ते वा दातव्या कन्यका नृप ॥ पात्राय विप्रायान्यस्मै कस्मै चिद्वा विशेषतः ॥ २८ ॥
adya vAbdadinAnte vA dAtavyA kanyakA nRpa ॥ pAtrAya viprAyAnyasmai kasmai cidvA vizeSataH ॥ 28 ॥
O king, whether today or after a year, the princess is to be given to a deserving person, a brahmin or anyone else.

सत्पात्रं ब्राह्मणादन्यन्न पश्यावो जगत्त्रये ॥ सुतां दत्त्वा च मुनये रक्ष स्वां सर्वसम्पदम् ॥ २९ ॥
satpAtraM brAhmaNAdanyanna pazyAvo jagattraye ॥ sutAM dattvA ca munaye rakSa svAM sarvasampadam ॥ 29 ॥
In the three worlds we do not see more deserving person than this brahmin. Give your daughter to this sage and save your riches.

राजन्नेकनिमित्तेन सर्वसंपद्विनश्यति ॥ सर्वं रक्षति तं त्यक्त्वा विना तं शरणागतम् ॥ 2-3-34-३० ॥
rAjannekanimittena sarvasaMpadvinazyati ॥ sarvaM rakSati taM tyaktvA vinA taM zaraNAgatam ॥ 2-3-34-30 ॥
O king, if all riches face the danger of destruction due to one object or person, the wise man saves everything by abandoning that object or person unless it be that who has sought refuge.

वसिष्ठ उवाच ॥ राजा प्राज्ञवचः श्रुत्वा विलप्य च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ कन्यां सालंकृतां कृत्वा मुनीन्द्राय ददौ किल ॥३१॥
vasiSTha uvAca ॥ rAjA prAjJavacaH zrutvA vilapya ca muhurmuhuH ॥ kanyAM sAlaMkRtAM kRtvA munIndrAya dadau kila ॥31॥
Vasiṣṭha said: On hearing the words of the wise, the king lamented again and again but ultimately offered his daughter fully bedecked in ornaments to the excellent sage.

कान्तां गृहीत्वा स मुनिर्विवाह्य विधिवद्गिरे ॥ पद्मां पद्मोपमां तां वै मुदितस्स्वालयं ययौ ॥ ३२ ॥
kAntAM gRhItvA sa munirvivAhya vidhivadgire ॥ padmAM padmopamAM tAM vai muditassvAlayaM yayau ॥ 32 ॥
O mountain, accepting and marrying the beautiful maiden Padmā, on a par with goddess Lakṣmī, in accordance with holy laws, the delighted sage returned to his abode.

राजा सर्वान्परित्यज्य दत्त्वा वृद्धाय चात्मजाम् ॥ ग्लानिं चित्ते समाधाय जगाम तपसे वनम् ॥३३॥
rAjA sarvAnparityajya dattvA vRddhAya cAtmajAm ॥ glAniM citte samAdhAya jagAma tapase vanam ॥33॥
After giving his daughter to an old man, the king was much dejected in mind. Abandoning everything he went to the forest for performing penance.

तद्भार्य्यापि वनं याते प्राणनाथे तदा गिरे ॥ भर्तुश्च दुहितुश्शोकात्प्राणांस्तत्याज सुन्दरी ॥ ३४ ॥
tadbhAryyApi vanaM yAte prANanAthe tadA gire ॥ bhartuzca duhituzzokAtprANAMstatyAja sundarI ॥ 34 ॥
O mountain, when the king went to the forest, the queen, passed away, due to the pangs of separation from her husband and daughter.

पूज्याः पुत्राश्च भृत्याश्च मूर्च्छामापुर्नृपं विना ॥ शुशुचुः श्वाससंयुक्तं ज्ञात्वा सर्वेपरे जनाः॥३५॥
pUjyAH putrAzca bhRtyAzca mUrcchAmApurnRpaM vinA ॥ zuzucuH zvAsasaMyuktaM jJAtvA sarvepare janAH॥35॥
Without the king, the respectable sons and officers of the king became unconscious. The other people thinking that the king was dead lamented much.

अनरण्यो वनं गत्वा तपस्तप्त्वाति शंकरम् ॥ समाराध्य ययौ भक्त्या शिवलोकमनामयम् ॥३६॥
anaraNyo vanaM gatvA tapastaptvAti zaMkaram ॥ samArAdhya yayau bhaktyA zivalokamanAmayam ॥36॥
Anaraṇya went to the forest, performed great penance, and worshipped Śiva with devotion. In the end, he attained Śivaloka free from all ailments.

नृपस्य कीर्तिमान्नाम्ना ज्येष्ठपुत्रोथ धार्मिकः ॥ पुत्रवत्पालयामास प्रजा राज्यं चकार ह ॥३७ ॥
nRpasya kIrtimAnnAmnA jyeSThaputrotha dhArmikaH ॥ putravatpAlayAmAsa prajA rAjyaM cakAra ha ॥37 ॥
The eldest son of the king, Kīrtimān, virtuously ruled over the kingdom and tended the subjects like his own children.

नृपस्य कीर्तिमान्नाम्ना ज्येष्ठपुत्रोथ धार्मिकः ॥ पुत्रवत्पालयामास प्रजा राज्यं चकार ह ॥३७ ॥
nRpasya kIrtimAnnAmnA jyeSThaputrotha dhArmikaH ॥ putravatpAlayAmAsa prajA rAjyaM cakAra ha ॥37 ॥
Thus, O mountain, I have narrated to you the auspicious story of Anaraṇya, how he saved his race and his wealth by offering his daughter to the sage.

शैलराज त्वमप्येवं सुतां दत्त्वा शिवाय च ॥ रक्ष सर्वकुलं सर्वान्वशान्कुरु सुरानपि ॥३९॥
zailarAja tvamapyevaM sutAM dattvA zivAya ca ॥ rakSa sarvakulaM sarvAnvazAnkuru surAnapi ॥39॥
O king of mountains, you too, give your daughter to Śiva, save the entire family and keep even the gods under your control.
