॥ ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ जगत्पिता शिवः प्रोक्तो जगन्माता शिवा मता ॥ तस्माद्देया त्वया कन्या शंकराय महात्मने ॥ १ ॥
॥ RSaya UcuH ॥ jagatpitA zivaH prokto jaganmAtA zivA matA ॥ tasmAddeyA tvayA kanyA zaMkarAya mahAtmane ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said: Śiva is the father of the universe. Pārvatī is the mother of the universe. Hence your daughter shall be given to Śiva, the supreme soul.

evaM kRtvA himagire sArthakaM te bhavejjanuH ॥ jagadgurorgurustvaM hi bhaviSyasi na saMzayaH ॥ 2 ॥
O Himālaya, by this activity your life will be fruitful. You will become the venerable person of the most venerable in the universe. There is no doubt about it.

Brahmā said: O great sage, on hearing these words of the seven usages, the lord of the mountains bowed to them with joined palms and spoke thus.

himAlaya uvAca ॥ saptarSayo mahAbhAgA bhavadbhiryadudIritam॥ tatpramANIkRtaM me hi puraiva girizecchayA॥4॥
Himavat said: O ye seven sages of great enlightenment, what you have just now said has been already cherished by me by the will of Śiva.

idAnImeka Agatya vipro vaiSNavadharmavAn॥ zivamuddizya suprItyA viparItaM vaco'bravIt ॥।5॥
Now, a certain brahmin professing Vaiṣṇava cult came here and spoke very critically about Śiva.

तदारभ्य शिवामाता ज्ञानभ्रष्टा बभूव ह ॥ सुताविवाहं रुद्रेण योगिना तेन नेच्छति ॥६॥
tadArabhya zivAmAtA jJAnabhraSTA babhUva ha ॥ sutAvivAhaM rudreNa yoginA tena necchati ॥6॥
Ever since, the mother Pārvatī has gone out of sense. Hences she does not wish her daughter’s marriage with Śiva.

कोपागारमगात्सा हि सुतप्ता मलिनाम्बरा ॥ कृत्वा महाहठं विप्रा बोध्यमानापिऽनाबुधत् ॥७॥
kopAgAramagAtsA hi sutaptA malinAmbarA ॥ kRtvA mahAhaThaM viprA bodhyamAnApi'nAbudhat ॥7॥
She has entered the chamber of anger. She is aggrieved and her clothes have become dirty. O brahmins, her obduracy is so great that she does not pay heed to any ad vice.

अहं च ज्ञानविभ्रष्टो जातोहं सत्यमीर्य्यते ॥ दातुं सुतां महेशाय नेच्छामि भिक्षुरूपिणे ॥
ahaM ca jJAnavibhraSTo jAtohaM satyamIryyate ॥ dAtuM sutAM mahezAya necchAmi bhikSurUpiNe ॥
I too am, you can say, out of sense. I am telling you the truth. I do not wish to give my daughter to Śiva who is apparently a mendicant.

ब्रह्मोवाच॥इत्युक्त्वा शैलराजस्तु शिवमायाविमोहितः ॥ तूष्णीं बभूव तत्रस्थो मुनीनां मध्यतो मुने॥९॥
brahmovAca॥ityuktvA zailarAjastu zivamAyAvimohitaH ॥ tUSNIM babhUva tatrastho munInAM madhyato mune॥9॥
Brahmā said: O sage, after saying these words, the king of mountains deluded by Śiva’s magic became silent and sat amidst the sages.

सर्वे सप्तर्षयस्ते हि शिवमायां प्रशस्य वै ॥ प्रेषयामासुरथ तां मेनकां प्रत्यरुन्धतीम् ॥2-3-33-१ ०॥
sarve saptarSayaste hi zivamAyAM prazasya vai ॥ preSayAmAsuratha tAM menakAM pratyarundhatIm ॥2-3-33-1 0॥
The seven celestial sages praised the magic of Śiva and sent Arundhatī to Menakā.

अथ पत्युस्समादाय निदेशं ज्ञानदा हि सा॥ जगामारुन्धती तूर्णं यत्र मेना च पार्वती ॥११॥
atha patyussamAdAya nidezaM jJAnadA hi sA॥ jagAmArundhatI tUrNaM yatra menA ca pArvatI ॥11॥
Then at the bidding of her husband Arundhatī, the bestower of knowledge, went quickly to the place where Menā and Pārvatī were sitting.

गत्वा ददर्श मेनां तां शयानां शोकमूर्च्छिताम्॥ उवाच मधुरं साध्वी सावधाना हितं वचः ॥१२॥
gatvA dadarza menAM tAM zayAnAM zokamUrcchitAm॥ uvAca madhuraM sAdhvI sAvadhAnA hitaM vacaH ॥12॥
After going in she saw Menā lying in her grief. The chaste lady spoke to her these carefully selected sweet and wholesome words:

अरुन्धत्युवाच ॥ उत्तिष्ठ मेनके साध्वि त्वद्गृहेऽहमरुन्धती ॥ आगता मुनयश्चापि सप्तायाताः कृपालवः ॥१३॥
arundhatyuvAca ॥ uttiSTha menake sAdhvi tvadgRhe'hamarundhatI ॥ AgatA munayazcApi saptAyAtAH kRpAlavaH ॥13॥
Arundhatī said: O Menakā, get up. O chaste lady, I, Arundhatī, have come to your house. The seven sages of sympathetic nature have also come.

brahmovAca ॥ arundhatIsvaraM zrutvA zIghramutthAya menakA ॥ uvAca zirasA natvA tAM padmAmiva tejasA ॥14॥
Brahmā said: On hearing Arundhatī’s voice, Menā got up quickly and bowed to her who was on a par with Lakṣmī in her brilliance.

मेनोवाच ॥ अहोद्य किमिदं पुण्यमस्माकं पुण्यजन्मनाम् ॥ वधूर्जगद्विधेः पत्नी वसिष्ठस्यागतेह वै ॥१५॥
menovAca ॥ ahodya kimidaM puNyamasmAkaM puNyajanmanAm ॥ vadhUrjagadvidheH patnI vasiSThasyAgateha vai ॥15॥
Menā said: Ha, what a meritorious thing is this! We are blessed. Arundhatī, the daughter-in-law of the Creator of the universe, the wife of Vasiṣṭha, has come here.

किमर्थमागता देवि तन्मे ब्रूहि विशेषतः ॥ अहं दासीसमा ते हि ससुता करुणां कुरु ॥ १६ ॥
kimarthamAgatA devi tanme brUhi vizeSataH ॥ ahaM dAsIsamA te hi sasutA karuNAM kuru ॥ 16 ॥
O gentle lady, what for is your visit now? Please tell me specifically. My daughter and I are your slaves. Be merciful to us.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा मेनकां साध्वी बोधयित्वा च तां बहु ॥ तथागता च सुप्रीत्या सास्ते यत्रर्षयोऽपि ते ॥१७॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityuktvA menakAM sAdhvI bodhayitvA ca tAM bahu ॥ tathAgatA ca suprItyA sAste yatrarSayo'pi te ॥17॥
Brahmā said: Arundhatī, the chaste lady thus addressed, advised her in various ways and returned to the place where the sages were seated.

अथ शैलेश्वरं ते च बोधयामासुरादरात्॥ स्मृत्वा शिवपदद्वन्द्वं सर्वे वाक्यविशारदाः ॥ १८ ॥
atha zailezvaraM te ca bodhayAmAsurAdarAt॥ smRtvA zivapadadvandvaM sarve vAkyavizAradAH ॥ 18 ॥
Then they began to advise the lord of the mountains, after thinking on the feet of Śiva. They were clever in speech and they spoke respectfully.

ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ शैलेन्द्र श्रूयतां वाक्यमस्माकं शुभकारणम् ॥ शिवाय पार्वतीं देहि संहर्त्तुः श्वशुरो भव ॥ १९ ॥
RSaya UcuH ॥ zailendra zrUyatAM vAkyamasmAkaM zubhakAraNam ॥ zivAya pArvatIM dehi saMharttuH zvazuro bhava ॥ 19 ॥
The sages said: O lord of the mountains, may our words, the cause of everything auspicious, be heard. Give Pārvatī to Śiva. Become the father-in-law of the world-destroyer.

अयाचितारं सर्वेशं प्रार्थयामास यत्नतः ॥ तारकस्य विनाशाय ब्रह्मासम्बंधकर्म्मणि ॥2-3-33-२०॥
ayAcitAraM sarvezaM prArthayAmAsa yatnataH ॥ tArakasya vinAzAya brahmAsambaMdhakarmmaNi ॥2-3-33-20॥
For the destruction of Tāraka, formerly Brahmā requested Śiva who is the lord of all and who does not beg of any one, to strive for this alliance.

नोत्सुको दारसंयोगे शंकरो योगिनां वरः ॥ विधेः प्रार्थनया देवस्तव कन्यां ग्रहीष्यति ॥२१॥
notsuko dArasaMyoge zaMkaro yoginAM varaH ॥ vidheH prArthanayA devastava kanyAM grahISyati ॥21॥
Śiva, the foremost of Yogins was not eager to marry. But since requested by Brahmā, the lord agreed to take your daughter.

दुहितुस्ते तपस्तप्तं प्रतिज्ञानं चकार सा॥ हेतुद्वयेन योगीन्द्रो विवाहं च करिष्यति ॥२२॥
duhituste tapastaptaM pratijJAnaM cakAra sA॥ hetudvayena yogIndro vivAhaM ca kariSyati ॥22॥
Pārvatī performed a penance and the lord promised her. Thus for these two reasons the lord of Yogins wishes to marry her.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ ऋषीणां वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य स हिमालयः ॥ उवाच किञ्चिद्भीतस्तु परं विनयपूर्वकम् ॥ २३ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ RSINAM vacanaM zrutvA prahasya sa himAlayaH ॥ uvAca kiJcidbhItastu paraM vinayapUrvakam ॥ 23 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of the sages, Himavat laughed but he was a little frightened. He spoke with humility.

हिमालय उवाच ॥ शिवस्य राजसामग्रीं न हि पश्यामि काञ्चन॥ कञ्चिदाश्रयमैश्वर्यं कं वा स्वजनबान्धवम् ॥२४॥
himAlaya uvAca ॥ zivasya rAjasAmagrIM na hi pazyAmi kAJcana॥ kaJcidAzrayamaizvaryaM kaM vA svajanabAndhavam ॥24॥
Himavat said: I do not see any royal paraphernalia with Śiva, He has none to support him. He has no assets. He has no kinsman.

नेच्छाम्यति विनिर्लिप्तयोगिने स्वां सुतामहम् ॥ यूयं वेदविधातुश्च पुत्रा वदत निश्चितम् ॥२५॥
necchAmyati vinirliptayogine svAM sutAmaham ॥ yUyaM vedavidhAtuzca putrA vadata nizcitam ॥25॥
I do not wish to give my daughter to a Yogin who is extremely detached. O ye sons of the Creator of the Vedas tell me decisively.

वरायाननुरूपाय पिता कन्यां ददाति चेत् ॥ कामान्मोहाद्भयाल्लोभात्स नष्टो नरकं यजेत् ॥२६॥
varAyAnanurUpAya pitA kanyAM dadAti cet ॥ kAmAnmohAdbhayAllobhAtsa naSTo narakaM yajet ॥26॥
If a father were to give his daughter in marriage to an unsuitable person, out of love, delusion, fear or covetousness, he is doomed. He will go to hell.

न हि दास्याम्यहं कन्यामिच्छया शूलपाणये ॥ यद्विधानं भवेद्योग्यमृषयस्त द्विधीयताम् ॥२७॥
na hi dAsyAmyahaM kanyAmicchayA zUlapANaye ॥ yadvidhAnaM bhavedyogyamRSayasta dvidhIyatAm ॥27॥
Out of my own free will, I will not give her to the trident-bearing Śiva. O sages, whatever arrangement is befitting here, may kindly be carried out.

brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacastasya himAgasya munIzvara ॥ pratyuvAca vasiSThastaM teSAM vAkyavizArada ॥28॥
Brahmā said: O excellent sages, on hearing these words of the mountain Himavat, Vasiṣṭha, the most eloquent among them replied:

वसिष्ठ उवाच ॥ शृणु शैलेश मद्वाक्यं सर्वथा ते हितावहम् ॥ धर्माविरुद्धं सत्यश्च परत्रेह मुदावहम् ॥ २९ ॥
vasiSTha uvAca ॥ zRNu zaileza madvAkyaM sarvathA te hitAvaham ॥ dharmAviruddhaM satyazca paratreha mudAvaham ॥ 29 ॥
Vasiṣtha said: O lord of mountains, listen to my words in every respect conducive to your welfare; they are not against virtue. They are true and shall bring about your joy here and hereafter.

वचनं त्रिविधं शैल लौकिके वैदिकेऽपि च ॥ सर्वं जानाति शास्त्रज्ञो निर्मलज्ञानचक्षुषा ॥ 2-3-33-३० ॥
vacanaM trividhaM zaila laukike vaidike'pi ca ॥ sarvaM jAnAti zAstrajJo nirmalajJAnacakSuSA ॥ 2-3-33-30 ॥
Statements, in ordinary language and in the Vedas, are of three forms. A scholar knowing all lores understands them by means of his pure vision of knowledge.

असत्यमहितं पश्चात्सांप्रतं श्रुतिसुन्दरम् ॥ सुबुद्धिर्वक्ति शत्रुर्हि हितं नैव कदाचन ॥ ३१ ॥
asatyamahitaM pazcAtsAMprataM zrutisundaram ॥ subuddhirvakti zatrurhi hitaM naiva kadAcana ॥ 31 ॥
It is only an enemy, though keen in intellect, who says what is pleasing to the ears now but what transpires to be untrue and unwholesome afterwards. He never speaks wholesome things.

आदावप्रीतिजनकं परिणामे सुखावहम् ॥ दयालुर्धमशीलो हि बोधयत्येव बांधवः ॥ ३२ ॥
AdAvaprItijanakaM pariNAme sukhAvaham ॥ dayAlurdhamazIlo hi bodhayatyeva bAMdhavaH ॥ 32 ॥
Only a virtuous and sympathetic friend will speak such words as are unpleasant in the beginning but conducive to happiness in the end.

श्रुतिमात्रात्सुधातुल्यं सर्वकालसुखावहम् ॥ सत्यसारं हितकरं वचनं श्रेष्ठमीप्सितम् ॥ ३३ ॥
zrutimAtrAtsudhAtulyaM sarvakAlasukhAvaham ॥ satyasAraM hitakaraM vacanaM zreSThamIpsitam ॥ 33 ॥
But the third variety of behaviour nectarlike to the ears, conducive to happiness on all occasions, essential and truthful is considered to be the most excellent.

एवञ्च त्रिविधं शैल नीतिशास्त्रोदितं वचः ॥ कथ्यतां त्रिषु मध्ये किं ब्रुवे वाक्यं त्वदीप्सितम् ॥ ३४ ॥
evaJca trividhaM zaila nItizAstroditaM vacaH ॥ kathyatAM triSu madhye kiM bruve vAkyaM tvadIpsitam ॥ 34 ॥
O mountain, these are the three types of behaviour as mentioned in the treatises on polity. Tell me which type of behaviour shall I adopt to please you.

ब्राह्मसम्पद्विहीनश्च शंकरस्त्रिदशेश्वरः तत्त्वज्ञानसमुद्रेषु सन्निमग्नैकमानसः ॥ ३५ ॥
brAhmasampadvihInazca zaMkarastridazezvaraH tattvajJAnasamudreSu sannimagnaikamAnasaH ॥ 35 ॥
Śiva, the lord of gods, is devoid of riches created by Brahmā. But His mind is engrossed in the ocean of true knowledge.

ज्ञानानन्दस्येश्वरस्य ब्राह्मवस्तुषु का स्पृहा ॥ गृही ददाति स्वसुतां राज्यसम्पत्तिशालिने ॥ ३६ ॥
jJAnAnandasyezvarasya brAhmavastuSu kA spRhA ॥ gRhI dadAti svasutAM rAjyasampattizAline ॥ 36 ॥
How can lord Śiva who is knowledge-Bliss Himself have any desire for articles created by Brahmā? An ordinary householder gives his daughter to one who has a kingdom and riches in his possession?

कन्यकां दुःखिने दत्त्वा कन्याघाती भवेत्पिता ॥ को वेद शंकरो दुःखी कुबेरो यस्य किंकरः ॥ ३७ ॥
kanyakAM duHkhine dattvA kanyAghAtI bhavetpitA ॥ ko veda zaMkaro duHkhI kubero yasya kiMkaraH ॥ 37 ॥
By offering his daughter to a miserable person, a father may be guilty of slaughtering his daughter. Who can think Śiva miserable whose servant is Kubera?

भ्रूभङ्गलीलया सृष्टिं स्रष्टुं हर्त्तुं क्षमो हि सः ॥ निर्गुणः परमात्मा च परेशः प्रकृतेः परः ॥ ३८ ॥
bhrUbhaGgalIlayA sRSTiM sraSTuM harttuM kSamo hi saH ॥ nirguNaH paramAtmA ca parezaH prakRteH paraH ॥ 38 ॥
He is attributeless, supreme soul, great lord and greater than Prakṛti. He can create and annihilate things by a mere sportive touch of His eyebrows.

यस्य च त्रिविधा मूर्त्तिर्विधा तुस्सृष्टिकर्मणि ॥ सृष्टिस्थित्यन्तजननी ब्रह्मविष्णुहराभिधा ॥ ३९ ॥
yasya ca trividhA mUrttirvidhA tussRSTikarmaNi ॥ sRSTisthityantajananI brahmaviSNuharAbhidhA ॥ 39 ॥
His manifestations are threefold, He is the cause of creation sustenance and annihilation in the names of Brahmā Viṣṇu and Śiva.

Brahmā stays in Brahmaloka, Viṣṇu in the milk ocean, Śiva in Kailāsa, all these are the attributes of Śiva.

In another Kalpa she was born of the womb of Dakṣa’s wife. Her name was Satī. She attained Śiva. Dakṣa gave her to Him.

She is victorious always in the form of Siddhā, the bestower of Siddhi (achievement) and is Siddhi personified. Śiva carefully preserves the bones and ashes from the funeral pyre of Satī.

Hence, you give your daughter, this gentle lady to Śiva out of your own free will. Otherwise she will herself go and surrender herself as his beloved wife.

All riches can be sacrificed, O lord of mountains, for the sake of a single entity, but the eternal Śruti has it that one should forsake a single entity for the sake of a unit.
