॥ brahmovAca ॥ brAhmaNasya vacaH zrutvA menovAca himAlayam ॥ zokenAsAdhunayanA hRdayena vidUyatA ॥ 1 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of the brahmin, Menā spoke to Himavat with tears welling up in her eyes, due to grief and with. the heart extremely dejected.

मेनोवाच ॥ शृणु शैलेन्द्र मद्वाक्यं परिणामे सुखावहम् ॥ पृच्छ शैववरान्सर्वान्किमुक्तं ब्राह्मणेन ह ॥ २ ॥
menovAca ॥ zRNu zailendra madvAkyaM pariNAme sukhAvaham ॥ pRccha zaivavarAnsarvAnkimuktaM brAhmaNena ha ॥ 2 ॥
Menā said: O lord of mountains, please listen to my words conducive to happiness. Please consult important devotees of Śiva regarding what has been mentioned by the brahmin.

निन्दानेन कृता शम्भोर्वैष्णवेन द्विजन्मना ॥ श्रुत्वा तां मे मनोऽतीव निर्विण्णं हि नगेश्वर ॥३॥
nindAnena kRtA zambhorvaiSNavena dvijanmanA ॥ zrutvA tAM me mano'tIva nirviNNaM hi nagezvara ॥3॥
Many disparaging remarks about Śiva have been made by this brahminical devotee of Viṣṇu. O lord of mountains, on hearing these words, my mind is very much dejected.

तस्मै रुद्राय शैलेश न दास्यामि सुतामहम् ॥ कुरूपशीलनम्मे हि सुलक्षणयुतां निजाम् ॥ ४ ॥
tasmai rudrAya zaileza na dAsyAmi sutAmaham ॥ kurUpazIlanamme hi sulakSaNayutAM nijAm ॥ 4 ॥
O lord of mountains, I shall not give my daughter endowed with all good accomplishments to Śiva with ugly features, ignoble conduct and defiled name.

na manyase vaco cenme mariSyAmi na saMzayaH ॥ tyakSyAmi ca gRhaM sadyo bhakSayiSyAmi vA viSam ॥5॥
If you do not accede to my request, I shall undoubtedly die. I will immediately leave this house or swallow poison.

गले बद्ध्वांबिकां रज्ज्वा यास्यामि गहनं वनम् ॥ महाम्बुधौ मज्जयिष्ये तस्मै दास्यामि नो सुताम् ॥६॥
gale baddhvAMbikAM rajjvA yAsyAmi gahanaM vanam ॥ mahAmbudhau majjayiSye tasmai dAsyAmi no sutAm ॥6॥
With a rope I shall tie Pārvatī round my neck and go to a thick forest. I would rather drown myself in the great ocean. I shall never give my daughter to him.

इत्युक्त्वाशु तथा गत्वा मेना कोपालयं शुचा ॥ त्यक्त्वा हारं रुदन्ती सा चकार शयनं भुवि ॥ ७ ॥
ityuktvAzu tathA gatvA menA kopAlayaM zucA ॥ tyaktvA hAraM rudantI sA cakAra zayanaM bhuvi ॥ 7 ॥
Saying thus with great grief, Menā entered the chamber of anger. Casting off her necklaces she lay down on the ground sighing and sobbing.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तात शम्भुना सप्त एव ते ॥ संस्मृता ऋषयस्सद्यो विरहव्याकुलात्मना ॥८॥
etasminnantare tAta zambhunA sapta eva te ॥ saMsmRtA RSayassadyo virahavyAkulAtmanA ॥8॥
O dear, in the meantime all those seven celestial sages were remembered by Śiva whose mind was agitated by the pangs of separation from Pārvatī.

ऋषयश्चैव ते सर्वे शम्भुना संस्मृता यदा ॥ तदाऽऽजग्मुः स्वयं सद्यः कल्पवृक्षा इवापरे ॥ ९ ॥
RSayazcaiva te sarve zambhunA saMsmRtA yadA ॥ tadA''jagmuH svayaM sadyaH kalpavRkSA ivApare ॥ 9 ॥
All those seven sages, as soon as they were remembered by Śiva, came there in person as though they were another set of wish-yielding Kalpa trees.

अरुन्धती तथाऽऽयाता साक्षात्सिद्धिरिवापरा ॥ तान्द्रष्ट्वा सूर्यसंकाशान्विजहौ स्वजपं हरः ॥ 2-3-32-१० ॥
arundhatI tathA''yAtA sAkSAtsiddhirivAparA ॥ tAndraSTvA sUryasaMkAzAnvijahau svajapaM haraH ॥ 2-3-32-10 ॥
Arundhatī too came there as though she was an achievement personified. On seeing them resplendent like the sun, Śiva stopped his recitation of mantras.

स्थित्वाग्रे ऋषयः श्रेष्ठं नत्वा स्तुत्वा शिवं मुने ॥ मेनिरे च तदात्मानं कृतार्थं ते तपस्विनः ॥ ११ ॥
sthitvAgre RSayaH zreSThaM natvA stutvA zivaM mune ॥ menire ca tadAtmAnaM kRtArthaM te tapasvinaH ॥ 11 ॥
O sage, standing in front of Śiva and bowing to and eulogising Him, the seven sages of great austerity considered themselves blessed.

ततो विस्मयमापन्ना नम स्कृत्य स्थिताः पुनः ॥ प्रोचुः प्राञ्जलयस्ते वै शिवं लोकनमस्कृतम् ॥ १२ ॥
tato vismayamApannA nama skRtya sthitAH punaH ॥ procuH prAJjalayaste vai zivaM lokanamaskRtam ॥ 12 ॥
Then, as they were struck with surprise, they joined their palms in reverence, bowed to and addressed Śiva adored by all the worlds:

ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ सर्वोत्कृष्टं महाराज सार्वभौम दिवौकसाम् ॥ स्वभाग्यं वर्ण्यतेऽस्माभिः किं पुनस्सकलोत्तमम् ॥१३॥
RSaya UcuH ॥ sarvotkRSTaM mahArAja sArvabhauma divaukasAm ॥ svabhAgyaM varNyate'smAbhiH kiM punassakalottamam ॥13॥
The sages said: O most excellent of all, O great ruler, O Emperor of the heaven-dwellers, how can our fortune which is very excellent be described by us?

तपस्तप्तं त्रिधा पूर्वं वेदाध्ययनमुत्तमम् ॥ अग्नयश्च हुताः पूर्वं तीर्थानि विविधानि च ॥१४॥
tapastaptaM tridhA pUrvaM vedAdhyayanamuttamam ॥ agnayazca hutAH pUrvaM tIrthAni vividhAni ca ॥14॥
Formerly we had performed three kinds of penance; we had studied the excellent Vedas; we had made offerings in the fire, we had visited many holy centres.

वाङ्मनःकायजं किंचित्पुण्यं स्मरणसम्भवम् ॥ तत्सर्वं संगतं चाद्य स्मरणानुग्रहात्तव॥१५॥
vAGmanaHkAyajaM kiMcitpuNyaM smaraNasambhavam ॥ tatsarvaM saMgataM cAdya smaraNAnugrahAttava॥15॥
Thus whatever merit we have acquired verbally, mentally and physically that entire merit has now accrued to us by your blessing in remembering us.

यो वै भजति नित्यं त्वां कृतकृत्यो भवेन्नरः ॥ किं पुण्यं वर्ण्यते तेषां येषां च स्मरणं तव ॥१६॥
yo vai bhajati nityaM tvAM kRtakRtyo bhavennaraH ॥ kiM puNyaM varNyate teSAM yeSAM ca smaraNaM tava ॥16॥
A man who worships you always shall be blessed. How can that merit be properly described, the merit of those whom you yourself remember?

सर्वोत्कृष्टा वयं जाताः स्मरणात्ते सदाशिव ॥ मनोरथपथं नैव गच्छसि त्वं कथंचन ॥ १७ ॥
sarvotkRSTA vayaM jAtAH smaraNAtte sadAziva ॥ manorathapathaM naiva gacchasi tvaM kathaMcana ॥ 17 ॥
O Sadāśiva, we have become the most excellent of all people by your remembering us. Usually you never even come across the path of ambitions and aspirations of ordinary people.

वामनस्य फलं यद्वज्जन्मान्धस्य दृशौ यथा ॥ वाचालत्वञ्च मूकस्य रंकस्य निधिदर्शनम् ॥ १८ ॥
vAmanasya phalaM yadvajjanmAndhasya dRzau yathA ॥ vAcAlatvaJca mUkasya raMkasya nidhidarzanam ॥ 18 ॥
Like the result of height for a dwarf, or sight for one born blind, Like eloquence in a mute person, or a pauper seeing hidden treasure.

पङ्गोर्गिरिवराक्रान्तिर्वन्ध्यायः प्रसवस्तथा ॥ दर्शनं भवतस्तद्वज्जातं नो दुर्लभं प्रभो ॥ १९ ॥
paGgorgirivarAkrAntirvandhyAyaH prasavastathA ॥ darzanaM bhavatastadvajjAtaM no durlabhaM prabho ॥ 19 ॥
Like a lame man ascending a great mountain, or a barren woman giving birth — So too is the sight (darśana) of You, O Lord, rare and seemingly impossible to attain.

अद्य प्रभृति लोकेषु मान्याः पूज्या मुनीश्वराः ॥ जातास्ते दर्शनादेव स्वमुच्चैः पदमाश्रिताः ॥ 2-3-32-२० ॥
adya prabhRti lokeSu mAnyAH pUjyA munIzvarAH ॥ jAtAste darzanAdeva svamuccaiH padamAzritAH ॥ 2-3-32-20 ॥
By seeing you today we have become the most respectable sages worthy of the worship of all the worlds. We have reached the highest position.

अत्र किं बहुनोक्तेन सर्व था मान्यतां गताः ॥ दर्शनात्तव देवेश सर्वदेवेश्वरस्य हि ॥२१॥
atra kiM bahunoktena sarva thA mAnyatAM gatAH ॥ darzanAttava deveza sarvadevezvarasya hi ॥21॥
O lord of gods, by seeing you who are the lord of all gods we have become worthy of great respect. There is no necessity of talking more.

पूर्णानां किञ्च कर्तव्यमस्ति चेत्परमा कृपा ॥ सदृशं सेवकानां तु देयं कार्यं त्वया शुभम् ॥ २२ ॥
pUrNAnAM kiJca kartavyamasti cetparamA kRpA ॥ sadRzaM sevakAnAM tu deyaM kAryaM tvayA zubham ॥ 22 ॥
If any duty is assigned to us it will be a favour to us. An auspicious task befitting us, your utter slaves, shall be given to us.

Brahmā said: On hearing their words, Śiva the great lord, in conformity with the conventions of the world, spoke these pleasant words:

शिव उवाच ॥ ऋषयश्च सदा पूज्या भवन्तश्च विशेषतः ॥ युष्माकं कारणाद्विप्राः स्मरणं च मया कृतम् ॥ २४ ॥
ziva uvAca ॥ RSayazca sadA pUjyA bhavantazca vizeSataH ॥ yuSmAkaM kAraNAdviprAH smaraNaM ca mayA kRtam ॥ 24 ॥
Śiva said: Sages are always to be adored and particularly you all. O brahmins, it was for a specific reason that you have been summoned here.

ममावस्था भवद्भिश्च ज्ञायते ह्युपकारिका ॥ साधनीया विशेषेण लोकानां सिद्धिहेतवे ॥ २५ ॥
mamAvasthA bhavadbhizca jJAyate hyupakArikA ॥ sAdhanIyA vizeSeNa lokAnAM siddhihetave ॥ 25 ॥
My attitude of being helpful is known to you. That must be achieved, especially in the interest of the fulfilment of the desires of the world.

देवानां दुःखमुत्पन्नं ता रकात्सुदुरात्मनः ॥ ब्रह्मणा च वरौ दत्तः किं करोमि दुरासदः ॥ २६ ॥
devAnAM duHkhamutpannaM tA rakAtsudurAtmanaH ॥ brahmaNA ca varau dattaH kiM karomi durAsadaH ॥ 26 ॥
Cause for great misery has arisen for the gods at the hands of Tāraka the wicked. Boon has already been granted. He is invincible. What shall I do?

मूर्तयोऽष्टौ च याः प्रोक्ता मदीयाः परमर्षयः ॥ तास्सर्वा उपकाराय न तु स्वार्थाय तत्स्फुटम् ॥ २७ ॥
mUrtayo'STau ca yAH proktA madIyAH paramarSayaH ॥ tAssarvA upakArAya na tu svArthAya tatsphuTam ॥ 27 ॥
O great sages, all the eight cosmic bodies that I possess are not for furthering my self-interest, they are for helping the wide world.

तथा च कर्तुकामोहं विवाहं शिवया सह ॥ तया वै सुतपस्तप्तं दुष्करं परमर्षिभिः ॥ २८ ॥
tathA ca kartukAmohaM vivAhaM zivayA saha ॥ tayA vai sutapastaptaM duSkaraM paramarSibhiH ॥ 28 ॥
A great penance has been performed by Pārvatī. That cannot be performed even by great sages. I have to give her the great fruit thereof.

तस्यै परं फलं देयमभीष्टं तद्धितावहम् ॥ एतादृशः पणो मे हि भक्तानन्दप्रदः स्फुटम् ॥ २९ ॥
tasyai paraM phalaM deyamabhISTaM taddhitAvaham ॥ etAdRzaH paNo me hi bhaktAnandapradaH sphuTam ॥ 29 ॥
Indeed my vow is to render delight to my devotees. The fruit I bestow on her shall be conducive to her welfare. Hence I wish to marry her.

पार्वतीवचनाद्भिक्षुरूपो यातो गिरेर्गृहम् ॥ अहं पावितवान्कालीं यतो लीलाविशारदः ॥ 2-3-32-३० ॥
pArvatIvacanAdbhikSurUpo yAto girergRham ॥ ahaM pAvitavAnkAlIM yato lIlAvizAradaH ॥ 2-3-32-30 ॥
At the request of Pārvatī I went to the abode of the mountain in the guise of a mendicant. Clever in divine sports I thereby sanctified her.

मां ज्ञात्वा तौ परं ब्रह्म दम्पती परभक्तितः ॥ दातुकामावभूतां च स्वसुतां वेदरीतितः ॥३१॥
mAM jJAtvA tau paraM brahma dampatI parabhaktitaH ॥ dAtukAmAvabhUtAM ca svasutAM vedarItitaH ॥31॥
On hearing to know that I am the supreme Brahman, the couple were desirous of giving me their daughter with great devotion in accordance with the Vedic manner.

देवप्रेरणयाहं वै कृतवानस्मि निन्दनम् ॥ तदा स्वस्य च तद्भक्तिं विहन्तुं वैष्ण्णवात्मना ॥ ३२ ॥
devapreraNayAhaM vai kRtavAnasmi nindanam ॥ tadA svasya ca tadbhaktiM vihantuM vaiSNNavAtmanA ॥ 32 ॥
On the inducement of the gods, in order to reduce the quality of devotion (of Himavat and Menā) I took the guise of a devotee of Viṣṇu and rebuked myself.

तच्छ्रुत्वा तौ सुनिर्विण्णो तद्धीनौ संबभूवतुः ॥ स्वकन्यां नेच्छतो दातुं मह्यं हि मुनयोऽधुना ॥ ३३ ॥
tacchrutvA tau sunirviNNo taddhInau saMbabhUvatuH ॥ svakanyAM necchato dAtuM mahyaM hi munayo'dhunA ॥ 33 ॥
O sages, on hearing it they were dejected and have now lost interest in me and do not wish to give their daughter to me.

तस्माद्भवन्तो गच्छन्तु हिमाचलगृहं ध्रुवम् ॥ तत्र गत्वा गिरिवरं तत्पत्नीञ्च प्रबोधय ॥३४॥
tasmAdbhavanto gacchantu himAcalagRhaM dhruvam ॥ tatra gatvA girivaraM tatpatnIJca prabodhaya ॥34॥
Hence you all go to the abode of Himavat and urge the excellent mountain and his wife.

कथनीयं प्रयत्नेन वचनं वेदसम्मितम् ॥ सर्वथा करणीयन्तद्यथा स्यात्कार्य्यमुत्तमम् ॥३५॥
kathanIyaM prayatnena vacanaM vedasammitam ॥ sarvathA karaNIyantadyathA syAtkAryyamuttamam ॥35॥
Speak out the words as venerable as the Vedas. Do everything necessary to get the matter straightened out and settled.

उद्वाहं कर्तुमिच्छामि तत्पुत्र्या सह सत्तमाः ॥ स्वीकृतस्त द्विवाहो मे वरो दत्तश्च तादृशः ॥ ३६ ॥
udvAhaM kartumicchAmi tatputryA saha sattamAH ॥ svIkRtasta dvivAho me varo dattazca tAdRzaH ॥ 36 ॥
O excellent ones, I wish to marry their daughter. I have agreed to marry her and have already granted her that boon.

अत्र किं बहुनोक्तेन बोधनीयो हिमालयः ॥ तथा मेना च बोद्धव्या देवानां स्याद्धितं यथा ॥ ३७ ॥
atra kiM bahunoktena bodhanIyo himAlayaH ॥ tathA menA ca boddhavyA devAnAM syAddhitaM yathA ॥ 37 ॥
What is the use of talking too much? Himavat must be convinced. Menā too must be convinced similarly, so that the purpose of the gods shall be served well.

भवद्भिः कल्पितो यो वै विधिस्स्यादधिकस्ततः ॥ भवताञ्चैव कार्य्यं तु भवन्तः कार्य्यभागिनः ॥ ३८ ॥
bhavadbhiH kalpito yo vai vidhissyAdadhikastataH ॥ bhavatAJcaiva kAryyaM tu bhavantaH kAryyabhAginaH ॥ 38 ॥
Whatever mode is selected by you shall be more than necessary. The task is yours. You alone are the sharers of the credit.

Brahmā said: On hearing these words, the seven sages of pure mind became delighted and thought themselves blessed by the lord.

vayaM dhanyA abhUva~zca kRtakRtyAzca sarvathA ॥ vaMdyA yAtAzca sarveSAM pUjanIyA vizeSataH॥2-3-32-40॥

brahmaNA viSNunA yo vai vandyassarvArthasAdhakaH॥ sosmAnpreSayate preSyAnkArye lokasukhAvahe ॥41॥
He who is worthy of being respected by Brahmā and Viṣṇu, he who secures everything accomplished is sending us, his emissaries on an errand that is conducive to the happiness of all the worlds.

He is the master of the worlds and their father. She is considered the mother. Let this proper alliance increase for ever like the moon.

Brahmā said: Saying thus the celestial sages bowed to Śiva and went by aerial path in the direction of the city of Himavat.

On seeing that city of heavenly splendour, the sages were surprised. Expatiating on their good fortune they spoke to one another.

The sages said: We are really blessed and meritorious in being able to see this city because we have been engaged in a task like this.

This city seems to be better than Alakā, heaven, Bhogavatī and even Amarāvatī.

The houses are beautiful and well-built. The courtyards are well laid out and paved with different kinds of crystals and jewels of variegated colours.

Slabs of solar and lunar stones are found in every house. Different kinds of celestial trees are also growing here.

The splendour of festoons is also seen in every house. They are of different colours and sorts with shapes of parrots and swans carved on the walls of the palaces.

The canopies with hanging festoons are of diverse character. There are many lakes and ponds.

The gardens and parks are of various kinds frequented by delighted people. Here men are like gods and the women are like the celestial damsels.

karmabhUmau yAjJikAzca paurANAssvargakAmyayA ॥ kurvanti te vRthA sarve vihAya himavatpuram ॥ 52 ॥
In the land of activities (i.e. Bhārata), the sacrificial priests and the followers of Purāṇas perform holy rites with a desire to attain heaven. That is in vain because they have left off the city of Himavat.

Men are eager to go to heaven only as long as this city is not seen. O brahmins, when this city is seen what is the use of heaven?

On seeing those seven sages, resplendent like the sun, coming along the aerial path from a distance, Himavat was surprised and said:

Himavat said: The seven venerable persons, resplendant like the sun, are approaching me. These sages shall be worshipped by me now.

We householders are really blessed, to whom great men like these, bestowing happiness on all, pay their visit.

Brahmā said: In the meantime they descended on the ground from the sky. On seeing them Himavat advanced to welcome them.

With palms joined in reverence he bowed to them with stooping shoulders and worshipped them with due respect and honour.

hitAssaptarSayaste ca himavantannagezvaram॥ gRhItvocuH prasannAsyA vacanaM maGgalAlayam ॥ 2-3-32-60 ॥
Desiring welfare of others, the seven sages embraced Himavat, the lord of mountains and spoke words of auspicious blessings with pleasant faces.

Keeping them ahead he said—“My household life is blessed”. With great devotion he got and offered them seats.

himAlaya uvAca ॥ dhanyo hi kRtakRtyohaM saphalaM jIvita mama ॥ lokeSu darzanIyohaM bahutIrthasamo mataH ॥63॥
Himavat said: I am blessed. I am contented. My life is fruitful. I am the best person worthy of being seen in the three worlds. I am as pure as any of the holy centres.

यस्माद्भवन्तो मद्गेहमागता विष्णुरूपिणः ॥ पूर्णानां भवतां कार्य्यं कृपणानां गृहेषु किम् ॥६४॥
yasmAdbhavanto madgehamAgatA viSNurUpiNaH ॥ pUrNAnAM bhavatAM kAryyaM kRpaNAnAM gRheSu kim ॥64॥
All this is because you, verily in lord Viṣṇu’s forms, have come to my abode. Perfect ones such as you, what special purpose can there be in visiting poor persons like me?

tathApi kiJcitkAryaM ca sadRzaM sevakasya me ॥ kathanIyaM sudayayA saphalaM syAjjanurmama ॥65॥
Still I am your servant. Some task there may be to be entrusted to me. Mercifully may it be spoken out. May my life be fruitful.
