॥ brahmovAca ॥ tayorbhaktiM zive jJAtvA parAmavyabhicAriNIm ॥ sarve zakrAdayo devAzcicinturiti nArada ॥ 1 ॥
Brahmā said: On knowing their undistracted great devotion to Śiva, O Nārada, Indra and other gods, thought like this.

देवा ऊचुः ॥ एकान्तभक्त्या शैलश्चेत्कन्यां तस्मै प्रदास्यति ॥ ध्रुवं निर्वाणता सद्यस्स प्राप्स्यति च भारते ॥२॥
devA UcuH ॥ ekAntabhaktyA zailazcetkanyAM tasmai pradAsyati ॥ dhruvaM nirvANatA sadyassa prApsyati ca bhArate ॥2॥
The gods said: If the mountain were to give his daughter to Śiva with single-minded devotion he will attain salvation immediately and will disappear from Bhārata.

anantaratnAdhArazcetpRthvI tyaktvA prayAsyati ॥ ratnagarbhAbhidhA bhUmirmithyaiva bhavitA dhruvam ॥3॥
The mountain is the storehouse of endless gems. If he were to leave off the Earth and go, the name of the Earth—Ratnagarbhā (having gems in the womb)—shall be a misnomer.

स्थावरत्वं परित्यज्य दिव्यरूपं विधाय सः ॥ कन्यां शूलभृते दत्त्वा शिवलोकं गमिष्यति॥४॥
sthAvaratvaM parityajya divyarUpaM vidhAya saH ॥ kanyAM zUlabhRte dattvA zivalokaM gamiSyati॥4॥
He will cast off his immobile aspect and assume a divine form. He will give his daughter to the Trident bearing deity and will go to Śiva’s region.

mahAdevasya sArUpyaM lapsyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ tatra bhuktvA varAnbhogAMstato mokSamavApsyati ॥ 5॥
He will undoubtedly attain mergence into lord Śiva. having enjoyed pleasures there, he will attain salvation.

brahmovAca ॥ ityAlocya surAssarve kRtvA cAmantraNaM mithaH ॥ prasthApayitumaicchaMste guruM tatra suvismitAH ॥6॥
Brahmā said: Thinking like this and consulting one another they, in their bewilderment, decided to send god Bṛhaspati there.

tataH zakrAdayo devAssarve guruniketanam॥ jagmuH prItyA savinayA nArada svArthasAdhakAH॥7॥
O Nārada, then Indra and other gods, went to Bṛhaspati’s abode lovingly with humility, in their eagerness to achieve their self-interest.

गत्वा तत्र गुरुं नत्वा सर्वे देवास्सवासवाः॥ चक्रुर्निवेदनं तस्मै गुरवे वृत्तमादरात्॥८॥
gatvA tatra guruM natvA sarve devAssavAsavAH॥ cakrurnivedanaM tasmai gurave vRttamAdarAt॥8॥
Reaching there, all the gods including Indra bowed to Bṛhaspati and submitted every detail to him.

॥ देवा ऊचुः ॥ गुरो हिमालयगृहं गच्छास्मत्कार्य्यसिद्धये ॥ तत्र गत्वा प्रयत्नेन कुरु निन्दाञ्च शूलिनः ॥९॥
॥ devA UcuH ॥ guro himAlayagRhaM gacchAsmatkAryyasiddhaye ॥ tatra gatvA prayatnena kuru nindAJca zUlinaH ॥9॥
The gods said: O revered preceptor, please go to the abode of Himavat for the fulfilment of our task. After going there, you shall make disparaging remarks about the trident-bearing deity.

पिनाकिना विना दुर्गा वरं नान्यं वरिष्यति ॥ अनिच्छया सुतां दत्त्वा फलं तूर्णं लभिष्यति ॥2-3-31-१०॥
pinAkinA vinA durgA varaM nAnyaM variSyati ॥ anicchayA sutAM dattvA phalaM tUrNaM labhiSyati ॥2-3-31-10॥
Pārvatī will not marry any other person except Śiva. The mountain will derive the benefit only after sometime if he gives the daughter in marriage without his full concurrence.

कालेनैवाधुना शैल इदानीं भुवि तिष्ठतु॥ अनेकरत्नाधारं तं स्थापय त्वं क्षितौ गुरौ ॥११॥
kAlenaivAdhunA zaila idAnIM bhuvi tiSThatu॥ anekaratnAdhAraM taM sthApaya tvaM kSitau gurau ॥11॥
Let the mountain stay on earth for the present. O preceptor, you shall make him stay on the earth as he is the support of many gems.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इति देववचः श्रुत्वा प्रददौ कर्णयोः करम् ॥ न स्वीचकार स गुरुस्स्मरन्नाम शिवेति च ॥१२॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ iti devavacaH zrutvA pradadau karNayoH karam ॥ na svIcakAra sa gurussmarannAma ziveti ca ॥12॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these words of the gods, the preceptor of the gods, plugged his ears with his hands. He did not accept the proposal of the gods. He remembered the name “Śiva”.

अथ स्मृत्वा महादेवं बृहस्पतिरुदारधीः॥ उवाच देववर्यांश्च धिक्कृत्वा च पुनः पुनः ॥१३॥
atha smRtvA mahAdevaM bRhaspatirudAradhIH॥ uvAca devavaryAMzca dhikkRtvA ca punaH punaH ॥13॥
Then remembering lord Śiva, Bṛhaspati of liberal mind rebuked the gods again and again and said.

बृहस्पतिरुवाच ॥ सर्वे देवास्स्वार्थपराः परार्थध्वंसकारकाः ॥ कृत्वा शंकरनिंदा हि यास्यामि नरकं ध्रुवम् ॥ १४ ॥
bRhaspatiruvAca ॥ sarve devAssvArthaparAH parArthadhvaMsakArakAH ॥ kRtvA zaMkaraniMdA hi yAsyAmi narakaM dhruvam ॥ 14 ॥
Bṛhaspati said: All of you gods seem to be selfish in nature. You want to destroy other’s interests. Indeed I will go to hell by disparaging Śiva.

कश्चिन्मध्ये च युष्माकं गच्छेच्छैलान्तिकं सुराः ॥ संपादयेत्स्वाभिमतं शैलेन्द्रं प्रतिबोध्य च ॥१५॥
kazcinmadhye ca yuSmAkaM gacchecchailAntikaM surAH ॥ saMpAdayetsvAbhimataM zailendraM pratibodhya ca ॥15॥
O gods, one of you shall go to the mountain. Let him urge the lord of the mountains and achieve the desired object.

अनिच्छया सुतां दत्त्वा सुखं तिष्ठतु भारते ॥ तस्मै भक्त्या सुतां दत्त्वा मोक्षं प्राप्स्यति निश्चितम्॥१६॥
anicchayA sutAM dattvA sukhaM tiSThatu bhArate ॥ tasmai bhaktyA sutAM dattvA mokSaM prApsyati nizcitam॥16॥
Let him stay in Bhārata after giving his daughter without willingness. It is certain he will attain salvation if he gives his daughter with devotion.

पश्चात्सप्तर्षयस्सर्वे बोधयिष्यन्ति पर्वतम् ॥ पिनाकिना विना दुर्गा वरं नान्यं वरिष्यति॥१७॥
pazcAtsaptarSayassarve bodhayiSyanti parvatam ॥ pinAkinA vinA durgA varaM nAnyaM variSyati॥17॥
Afterwards the seven celestial sages will properly persuade the mountain. Except Pināka-bearing deity, Pārvatī will not marry any other person.

अथवा गच्छत सुरा ब्रह्मलोकं सवासवाः ॥ वृत्तं कथयत स्वं तत्स वः कार्यं करिष्यति ॥१८॥
athavA gacchata surA brahmalokaM savAsavAH ॥ vRttaM kathayata svaM tatsa vaH kAryaM kariSyati ॥18॥
Or, O gods, all of you go to Brahmā’s region taking Indra with you. Tell Brahmā all your details. He will get your work done immediately.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा ते समालोच्याजग्मुर्मम सभां सुराः ॥ सर्वे निवेदयांचक्रुर्नत्वा तद्गतमादरात् ॥१९॥
brahmovAca ॥ tacchrutvA te samAlocyAjagmurmama sabhAM surAH ॥ sarve nivedayAMcakrurnatvA tadgatamAdarAt ॥19॥
Brahmā said: On hearing it and consulting among themselves the gods came to my Assembly. After duly bowing to me they informed me about the details.

देवानां तद्वचः श्रुत्वा शिवनिन्दाकरं तदा ॥ वेदवक्ता विलप्याहं तानवोचं सुरान्मुने ॥ 2-3-31-२० ॥
devAnAM tadvacaH zrutvA zivanindAkaraM tadA ॥ vedavaktA vilapyAhaM tAnavocaM surAnmune ॥ 2-3-31-20 ॥
On hearing the words of the gods about censuring Śiva, O sage, I the reciter of the Vedas spoke to them in an aggrieved tone.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ नाहं कर्तुं क्षमो वत्साः शिवनिन्दां सुदुस्सहाम् ॥ संपद्विनाश रूपाञ्च विपदां बीजरूपिणीम् ॥ २१ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ nAhaM kartuM kSamo vatsAH zivanindAM sudussahAm ॥ saMpadvinAza rUpAJca vipadAM bIjarUpiNIm ॥ 21 ॥
Brahmā said: Dear children, I am incompetent to decry Śiva. It is unbearable. It destroys all riches. It is the seed of all adversities.

सुरा गच्छत कैलासं सन्तोषयत शंकरम् ॥ प्रस्थापयत तं शीघ्रं हिमालयगृहं प्रति॥२२॥
surA gacchata kailAsaM santoSayata zaMkaram ॥ prasthApayata taM zIghraM himAlayagRhaM prati॥22॥
O gods, all of you go to Kailāsa and propitiate Śiva. Make Him go to Himavat’s abode quickly.

स गच्छेदुपशैलेशमात्मनिन्दां करोतु वै ॥ परनिन्दाविनाशाय स्वनिन्दा यशसे मता ॥ २३ ॥
sa gacchedupazailezamAtmanindAM karotu vai ॥ paranindAvinAzAya svanindA yazase matA ॥ 23 ॥
Let him approach the lord of mountains and make disparaging remarks about Himself. Rebuking others is conducive to destruction. Rebuking oneself is conducive to fame.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ श्रुत्वेति मद्वचो देवा मां प्रणम्य मुदा च ते ॥ कैलासं प्रययुः शीघ्रं शैलानामधिपं गिरिम्।२४॥
brahmovAca ॥ zrutveti madvaco devA mAM praNamya mudA ca te ॥ kailAsaM prayayuH zIghraM zailAnAmadhipaM girim।24॥
Brahmā said: On hearing my words, all the gods, joyously bowed to me and went to Kailāsa, the chief of mountains.

तत्र गत्वा शिवं दृष्ट्वा प्रणम्य नतमस्तकाः॥ सुकृतांजलयस्सर्वे तुष्टुवुस्तं सुरा हरम् ॥२५॥
tatra gatvA zivaM dRSTvA praNamya natamastakAH॥ sukRtAMjalayassarve tuSTuvustaM surA haram ॥25॥
Going there and seeing Śiva they bowed to Him with bent heads and palms joined in reverence. The gods eulogised Śiva.

॥ देवा ऊचुः ॥ देवदेव महादेव करुणाकर शंकर ॥ वयं त्वां शरणापन्नाः कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते ॥२६॥
॥ devA UcuH ॥ devadeva mahAdeva karuNAkara zaMkara ॥ vayaM tvAM zaraNApannAH kRpAM kuru namo'stu te ॥26॥
The gods said: O great lord, lord of gods, O Śiva, the merciful, we seek refuge in you. Be sympathetic. Obeisance be to you.

त्वं भक्तवत्सलः स्वामिन्भक्तकार्यकरस्सदा ॥ दीनोद्धरः कृपासिन्धुर्भक्तापद्विनिमोचकः॥२७॥
tvaM bhaktavatsalaH svAminbhaktakAryakarassadA ॥ dInoddharaH kRpAsindhurbhaktApadvinimocakaH॥27॥
O lord, you are favourably disposed to your devotees, always carrying out their tasks. You are the uplifter of the distressed, and an ocean of mercy. You save us from all our miseries and distresses.

॥ brahmovAca॥ iti stutvA mahezAnaM sarve devAssavAsavAH ॥ sarvaM nivedayAMcakrustadvRttaM tata AdarAt ॥28॥
Brahmā said: Eulogising lord Śiva thus, Indra and other gods respectfully submitted all the details.

तच्छ्रुत्वा देववचनं स्वीचकार महेश्वरः ॥ देवान् सुयापयामास तानाश्वास्य विहस्य सः ॥२९॥
tacchrutvA devavacanaM svIcakAra mahezvaraH ॥ devAn suyApayAmAsa tAnAzvAsya vihasya saH ॥29॥
On hearing the words of the gods, lord Śiva agreed to the proposal. He made the gods return after assuring them smilingly.

देवा मुमुदिरे सर्वे शीघ्रं गत्वा स्वमंदिरम्॥ सिद्धं मत्वा स्वकार्य्यं हि प्रशंसन्तस्सदाशिवम् ॥ 2-3-31-३० ॥
devA mumudire sarve zIghraM gatvA svamaMdiram॥ siddhaM matvA svakAryyaM hi prazaMsantassadAzivam ॥ 2-3-31-30 ॥
Hastening to their abodes, the gods rejoiced much considering their work fully fulfilled and praising Sadāśiva.

ततः स भगवाञ्छम्भुर्महेशो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ प्रययौ शैलभूपञ्च मायेशो निर्विकारवान् ॥३१॥
tataH sa bhagavAJchambhurmahezo bhaktavatsalaH ॥ prayayau zailabhUpaJca mAyezo nirvikAravAn ॥31॥
Then the lord Śiva who is favourably disposed to his devotees, the lord of magic and free from aberrations went to the lord of mountains.

यदा शैलस्सभामध्ये समुवास मुदान्वितः ॥ बन्धुवर्गैः परिवृतः पार्वतीसहितस्स्वयम् ॥ ३२ ॥
yadA zailassabhAmadhye samuvAsa mudAnvitaH ॥ bandhuvargaiH parivRtaH pArvatIsahitassvayam ॥ 32 ॥
When Himavan (the lord of the mountains) sat joyfully in the midst of the assembly, Surrounded by his relatives and together with Pārvatī herself.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र ह्याजगाम सदाशिवः ॥ दण्डी छत्री दिव्यवासा बिभ्रत्तिलकमुज्ज्वलम् ॥३३॥
etasminnantare tatra hyAjagAma sadAzivaH ॥ daNDI chatrI divyavAsA bibhrattilakamujjvalam ॥33॥
When Himavan (the lord of the mountains) sat joyfully in the midst of the assembly, Surrounded by his relatives and together with Pārvatī herself.At that very moment, there arrived Sadāśiva (Eternal Shiva), Carrying a staff and a parasol, wearing divine garments, and bearing a radiant tilaka (mark on the forehead).

करे स्फटिकमालाञ्च शालग्रामं गले दधत् ॥ जपन्नाम हरेर्भक्त्या साधुवेषधरौ द्विजः ॥३४॥
kare sphaTikamAlAJca zAlagrAmaM gale dadhat ॥ japannAma harerbhaktyA sAdhuveSadharau dvijaH ॥34॥
He was in the guise of a saintly brahmin. He was repeating the name of Viṣṇu with devotion. He had the garland of crystal beads in his hand and the Śālagrama stone round his neck.

तं च दृष्ट्वा समुत्तस्थौ सगणोऽपि हिमालयः ॥ ननाम दण्डवद्भूमौ भक्त्यातिथिमपूर्वकम् ॥३५॥
taM ca dRSTvA samuttasthau sagaNo'pi himAlayaH ॥ nanAma daNDavadbhUmau bhaktyAtithimapUrvakam ॥35॥
On seeing that extraordinary guest, Himavat with his attendants stood up in reverence and prostrated before him with devotion.

ननाम पार्वती भक्त्या प्राणेशं विप्ररूपिणम्॥ ज्ञात्वा तं मनसा देवी तुष्टाव परया मुदा॥३६॥
nanAma pArvatI bhaktyA prANezaM viprarUpiNam॥ jJAtvA taM manasA devI tuSTAva parayA mudA॥36॥
Pārvatī bowed with devotion to her dear lover in the guise of a brahmin. On realising him mentally the goddess eulogised him with great joy.

आशिषं युयुजे विप्रस्सर्वेषां प्रीतितश्शिवः॥ शिवाया अधिकं तात मनोभिलषितं हृदा ॥३७॥
AziSaM yuyuje viprassarveSAM prItitazzivaH॥ zivAyA adhikaM tAta manobhilaSitaM hRdA ॥37॥
With great pleasure Śiva bestowed his blessings on all. O dear, He bestowed on Pārvatī her cherished desire in addition.

मधुपर्कादिकं सर्वं जग्राह ब्राह्मणो मुदा ॥ दत्तं शैलाधिराजेन हिमांगेन महादरात् ॥३८॥
madhuparkAdikaM sarvaM jagrAha brAhmaNo mudA ॥ dattaM zailAdhirAjena himAMgena mahAdarAt ॥38॥
The brahmin received with pleasure the articles of homage etc. offered by Himavat, the lord of mountains.

पप्रच्छ कुशलं चास्य हिमाद्रिः पर्वतोत्तमः॥ तं द्विजेन्द्रं महाप्रीत्या सम्पूज्य विधिवन्मुने॥३९॥
papraccha kuzalaM cAsya himAdriH parvatottamaH॥ taM dvijendraM mahAprItyA sampUjya vidhivanmune॥39॥
O sage, after duly worshipping the excellent brahmin with pleasure, the mountain Himavat enquired of his welfare.

पुनः पप्रच्छ शैलेशस्तं ततः को भवानिति ॥ उवाच शीघ्रं विप्रेन्द्रो गिरीद्रं सादरं वचः॥2-3-31-४०॥

The chief of brahmins said: O foremost among mountains, I am a brahmin devotee of Viṣṇu, and a great scholar. My occupation is that of a match-maker. I roam about on the earth.

I go where I wish. I go everywhere. By the power of my preceptor I am omniscient. I am simple-minded and by nature I help others and I am sympathetic and quell aberrations.

I have come to know that you desire to give your daughter to Śiva, this daughter so tender like a lotus flower, of divinely excellent form and endowed with all accomplishments.

To the one who is without shelter or support, detached from all associations, Ugly in appearance, devoid of qualities, dwelling in cremation grounds, Wearing serpents as ornaments, and taking on a frightening form — a yogi.

Clothed only in the directions (naked), with a deformed or unpleasant body, Wearing snakes as ornaments, of unknown family and name, And wandering about in evil or impure places.

His body smeared with ash, extremely angry and lacking discernment, Of unknown age, always wearing matted hair in a dreadful manner.

Wandering everywhere without a fixed abode, wearing serpents as garlands, a beggar, Engaged in wicked paths and stubbornly rejecting the Vedic way.

O mountain, this inclination of yours is not at all conducive to auspiciousness. O foremost among the wise, born of Nārāyaṇa’s family, learn sense.

For the marriage of Pārvatī, He is not at all a deserving person. On hearing of this, the general public will smile in derision.

pazya zailAdhipa tvaM ca na tasyaikosti bAndhavaH ॥ mahAratnAkarastvaJca tasya kiJciddhanaM na hi ॥ 2-3-31-50 ॥
O lord of mountains, see for yourself. He has not a single kinsman. You are the storehouse of great gems and jewels. He has no assets at all.

O lord of mountains, you shall consult your kinsmen, sons, wife and wise counsellors, except Pārvatī.

O lord of mountains, the medicine does not appeal at all to the patient. Wrong diet that brings about great defects always appeals to him.

brahmovAca ॥ ityuktvA brAhmaNaH zIghraM sa vai bhuktvA mudAnvitaH ॥ jagAma svAlayaM zAnto nAnAlIlAkara zzivaH ॥53॥
Brahmā said: Saying this, the brahmin stopped. He took food and left the place with pleasure for his abode. Śiva is one who quietly indulges in His divine sports.
