नारद उवाच ॥ ॥ विधे नेत्रसमुद्भूतवह्निज्वाला हरस्य सा ॥ गता कुत्र वद त्वं तच्चरित्रं शशिमौलिनः ॥ १ ॥
nArada uvAca ॥ ॥ vidhe netrasamudbhUtavahnijvAlA harasya sA ॥ gatA kutra vada tvaM taccaritraM zazimaulinaH ॥ 1 ॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, please tell me “Where did the flame of fire emerging from the eye of Śiva go?” Please tell me also the further story of the moon-crested lord.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ ॥ यदा भस्म चकाराशु तृतीयनयनानलः ॥ शम्भोः कामं प्रजज्वाल सर्वतो विफलस्तदा ॥२॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ ॥ yadA bhasma cakArAzu tRtIyanayanAnalaH ॥ zambhoH kAmaM prajajvAla sarvato viphalastadA ॥2॥
Brahmā said: When the fire from the third eye of Śiva reduced Kāma to ashes it began to blaze all round without burning anything.

हाहाकारो महानासीत्त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे। सर्वदेवर्षयस्तात शरणं मां ययुर्द्रुतम् ॥३॥
hAhAkAro mahAnAsIttrailokye sacarAcare। sarvadevarSayastAta zaraNaM mAM yayurdrutam ॥3॥
A huge hue and cry was raised in the three worlds consisting of the mobile and immobile creatures. Immediately the gods and sages sought refuge in me.

सर्वे निवेदयामासुस्तद्दुखं मह्यमाकुलाः ॥ सुप्रणम्य सुसंस्तुत्य करौ बद्ध्वा नतानना ॥ ४ ॥
sarve nivedayAmAsustaddukhaM mahyamAkulAH ॥ supraNamya susaMstutya karau baddhvA natAnanA ॥ 4 ॥
All of them in their agitation bowed to and eulogised me with their palms joined in reverence and the heads bent down. They intimated to me their grief.

तच्छ्रुत्वाहं शिवं स्मृत्वा तद्धेतुं सुविमृश्य च ॥ गतस्तत्र विनीतात्मा त्रिलोकावनहेतवे ॥ ५ ॥
tacchrutvAhaM zivaM smRtvA taddhetuM suvimRzya ca ॥ gatastatra vinItAtmA trilokAvanahetave ॥ 5 ॥
On hearing that I pondered over the reason for the same, and remembering Śiva humbly I went there in order to protect the three worlds.

संदग्धुकामः स शुचिज्वालामालातिदीपितः ॥ स्तंभितोऽरं मया शंभुप्रसादाप्तसुतेजसा ॥ ६ ॥
saMdagdhukAmaH sa zucijvAlAmAlAtidIpitaH ॥ staMbhito'raM mayA zaMbhuprasAdAptasutejasA ॥ 6 ॥
That fire, out to burn everything, very brilliant with its shooting flames, was thwarted by me as I had the capacity by Śiva’s grace.

अथ क्रोधमयं वह्निं दग्धुकाम जगत्त्रयम् ॥ वाडवांतकमार्षं च सौम्यज्वालामुखं मुने ॥७॥
atha krodhamayaM vahniM dagdhukAma jagattrayam ॥ vADavAMtakamArSaM ca saumyajvAlAmukhaM mune ॥7॥
O sage, then I made that fire of fury, out to burn the three worlds, tender in its blaze and mare-like in shape.

तं वाडवतनुमहं समादाय शिवेच्छया ॥ सागरं समगां लोकहिताय जगतां पतिः ॥ ८ ॥
taM vADavatanumahaM samAdAya zivecchayA ॥ sAgaraM samagAM lokahitAya jagatAM patiH ॥ 8 ॥
Taking that fire mare-like in form, at the will of Śiva, I, the lord of the worlds, went to the sea shore, for the benefit of the worlds.

आगतं मां समालोक्य सागरस्सांजलिर्मुने ॥ धृत्वा च पौरुषं रूपमागतस्संनिधिं मम ॥ ९ ॥
AgataM mAM samAlokya sAgarassAMjalirmune ॥ dhRtvA ca pauruSaM rUpamAgatassaMnidhiM mama ॥ 9 ॥
O sage, on seeing me arrived there, the sea took a human form and approached me with palms joined in reverence.

सुप्रणम्याथ मां सिंधुस्संस्तूय च यथा विधि ॥ स मामुवाच सुप्रीत्या सर्वलोकपितामहम् ॥2-3-20-१०॥
supraNamyAtha mAM siMdhussaMstUya ca yathA vidhi ॥ sa mAmuvAca suprItyA sarvalokapitAmaham ॥2-3-20-10॥
Bowing to and duly eulogising me, the grandfather of all the worlds, the ocean said lovingly.

सागर उवाच ॥ किमर्थमागतोऽसि त्वं ब्रह्मन्नत्राखिलाधिप ॥ तन्निदेशय सुप्रीत्या मत्वा मां च स्वसेवकम् ॥ ११ ॥
sAgara uvAca ॥ kimarthamAgato'si tvaM brahmannatrAkhilAdhipa ॥ tannidezaya suprItyA matvA mAM ca svasevakam ॥ 11 ॥
The ocean said: O Brahmā, the lord of all, why have you come here? Please command me with pleasure knowing me to be your servant.

अथाहं सागरवचश्श्रुत्वा प्रीतिपुरस्सरम् ॥ प्रावोचं शंकरं स्मृत्वा लौकिकं हितमावहन् ॥ १२ ॥
athAhaM sAgaravacazzrutvA prItipurassaram ॥ prAvocaM zaMkaraM smRtvA laukikaM hitamAvahan ॥ 12 ॥
On hearing the words of the ocean I remembered Śiva. I spoke with love in order to benefit the world.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ शृणु तात महाधीमन्सर्वलोकहितावह ॥ वच्म्यहं प्रीतितस्सिंधो शिवेच्छाप्रेरितो हृदा ॥ १३ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ zRNu tAta mahAdhImansarvalokahitAvaha ॥ vacmyahaM prItitassiMdho zivecchAprerito hRdA ॥ 13 ॥
Brahmā said: O dear, intelligent one, causing the welfare of all the worlds, O ocean, induced by Śiva’s will, I shall explain to you.

अयं क्रोधो महेशस्य वाडवात्मा महाप्रभुः ॥ दग्ध्वा कामं द्रुतं सर्वं दग्धुकामोऽभवत्ततः ॥१४॥
ayaM krodho mahezasya vADavAtmA mahAprabhuH ॥ dagdhvA kAmaM drutaM sarvaM dagdhukAmo'bhavattataH ॥14॥
This is the fire of fury of lord Śiva, the great lord. It is in the form of a mare now. After burning Kāma it was about to burn everything.

प्रार्थितोऽहं सुरैश्शीघ्रं पीडितैश्शंकरेच्छया ॥ तत्रागत्य द्रुतं तं वै तात स्तंभितवाञ्शुचिम् ॥१५॥
prArthito'haM suraizzIghraM pIDitaizzaMkarecchayA ॥ tatrAgatya drutaM taM vai tAta staMbhitavAJzucim ॥15॥
At the will of Śiva I was requested by the gods who were harassed by it, and so I went there and suppressed the fire.

वाडवं रूपमाधत्त तमादायाग तोत्र ह ॥ निर्दिशामि जलाधार त्वामहं करुणाकरः ॥ १६ ॥
vADavaM rUpamAdhatta tamAdAyAga totra ha ॥ nirdizAmi jalAdhAra tvAmahaM karuNAkaraH ॥ 16 ॥
I gave it the form of a mare. I have brought it here. O ocean, I ask you to be merciful.

अयं क्रोधी महेशस्य वाडवं रूपमाश्रितः ॥ ज्वालामुखस्त्वया धार्य्यो यावदाभूतसंप्लवम् ॥१७॥
ayaM krodhI mahezasya vADavaM rUpamAzritaH ॥ jvAlAmukhastvayA dhAryyo yAvadAbhUtasaMplavam ॥17॥
This fury of lord Śiva, now in the form of a mare, you will bear till the final dissolution of all living beings.

यदात्राहं समागम्य वत्स्यामि सरितां पते ॥ तदा त्वया परित्याज्यः क्रोधोऽयं शांकरोऽद्भुतः ॥१८॥
yadAtrAhaM samAgamya vatsyAmi saritAM pate ॥ tadA tvayA parityAjyaH krodho'yaM zAMkaro'dbhutaH ॥18॥
O lord of rivers, when I shall come and stay here, you shall release it. This is Śiva’s wonderful fire of fury.

भोजनं तोयमेतस्य तव नित्यं भविष्यति ॥ यत्नादेवावधार्य्योऽयं यथा नोपैति चांतरम् ॥ १९ ॥
bhojanaM toyametasya tava nityaM bhaviSyati ॥ yatnAdevAvadhAryyo'yaM yathA nopaiti cAMtaram ॥ 19 ॥
His perpetual diet shall consist of your waters. This shall be preserved by you with effort lest it should go down.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्युक्तो हि मया सिंधुरंगीचक्रे तदा धुवम् ॥ ग्रहीतुं वाडवं वह्निं रौद्रं चाशक्यमन्यतः ॥ 2-3-20-२० ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityukto hi mayA siMdhuraMgIcakre tadA dhuvam ॥ grahItuM vADavaM vahniM raudraM cAzakyamanyataH ॥ 2-3-20-20 ॥
Thus requested by me, the ocean agreed. None else could have grasped Śiva’s fire of fury thus.

ततः प्रविष्टो जलधौ स वाडवतनुः शुचिः ॥ वार्योघान्सुदहंस्तस्य ज्वालामालाभिदीपितः ॥ २१ ॥
tataH praviSTo jaladhau sa vADavatanuH zuciH ॥ vAryoghAnsudahaMstasya jvAlAmAlAbhidIpitaH ॥ 21 ॥
That fire in the form of a mare entered the ocean and began to consume the currents of water. It blazed with all its shooting flames.

ततस्संतुष्टचेतस्कस्स्वं धामाहं गतो मुने ॥ अंतर्धानमगात्सिंधुर्दिव्यरूपः प्रणम्य माम् ॥२२॥
tatassaMtuSTacetaskassvaM dhAmAhaM gato mune ॥ aMtardhAnamagAtsiMdhurdivyarUpaH praNamya mAm ॥22॥
O sage, then, delighted in mind I returned to my abode. The ocean of divine form bowed to me and vanished.

स्वास्थ्यं प्राप जगत्सर्वं निर्मुक्तं तद्भवाद्भयात् ॥ देवा बभूवुः सुखिनो मुनयश्च महामुने २३ ॥
svAsthyaM prApa jagatsarvaM nirmuktaM tadbhavAdbhayAt ॥ devA babhUvuH sukhino munayazca mahAmune 23 ॥
O great sage, the entire universe, freed from the fear of that fire became normal. The gods and the sages became happy.
