Brahmā said: After going there, the haughty Kāma, deluded by Śiva’s magic power, stationed himself, after first spreading the enchanting power of Spring all around.

vasaMtasya ca yo dharmmaH prasasAra sa sarvataH ॥ tapasthAne mahezasyauSadhiprasthe munIzvara ॥ 2 ॥
The enchanting influence of Spring spread everywhere around Oṣadhiprastha, the penance-grove of Śiva, the supreme lord, O excellent sage.

O great sage, the groves bloomed with special exuberance, O excellent sage, due to his power.

The fragrant flowers of Mango and Aśoka trees shone heightening feelings of love.

The water lilies with bees hovering on them proved to be the causes for the rise of love in the minds of everyone.

The sweet cooings of the cuckoos heightened emotions of love. They were exquisite and pleasing to the mind.

O sage, diverse sounds of the hummings of the bees rang sweet in the ears of everyone heightening temptations of love.

caMdrasya vizadA kAMtirvikIrNA hi samaMtata ॥ kAminAM kAminInAM ca dUtikA iva sAbhavat ॥ 8 ॥
The bright light of the moon scattered all around appeared to be the emissary of lovers and their beloveds.

मानिनां प्रेरणायासीत्तत्काले कालदीपिका ॥ मारुतश्च सुखः साधो ववौ विरहिणोऽप्रियः ॥ ९ ॥
mAninAM preraNAyAsIttatkAle kAladIpikA ॥ mArutazca sukhaH sAdho vavau virahiNo'priyaH ॥ 9 ॥
At that time the Kāladīpikā (brilliant lamp) induced reticent haughty persons to love. O good sir, the wind blew gently but distressed those who were separated from their beloveds.

एवं वसंतविस्तारो मदनावेशकारकः ॥ वनौकसां तदा तत्र मुनीनां दुस्सहोऽत्यभूत् ॥ 2-3-18-१० ॥
evaM vasaMtavistAro madanAvezakArakaH ॥ vanaukasAM tadA tatra munInAM dussaho'tyabhUt ॥ 2-3-18-10 ॥
Thus the vast diffusion of Spring caused the display of emotions of love. It was unbearable to the forestdwelling sages.

अचेतसामपि तदा कामासक्तिरभून्मुने ॥ सुचेतासां हि जीवानां सेति किं वर्ण्यते कथा॥ ११ ॥
acetasAmapi tadA kAmAsaktirabhUnmune ॥ sucetAsAM hi jIvAnAM seti kiM varNyate kathA॥ 11 ॥
O sage, then, even the insentient beings had the emotions of love. What about the state of sentient ones?

Thus spring employed his unbearable power heightening the love of all living beings.

akAlanimitaM tAta madhorvIkSya harastadA ॥ AzcaryyaM paramaM mene svalIlAttatanuH prabhuH ॥ 13 ॥
On seeing the untimely display of spring, Śiva the lord, who had assumed a physical body indulging in divine sports, thought it surprising.

अथ लीलाकरस्तत्र तपः परमदुष्करम् ॥ तताप स वशीशो हि हरो दुःखहरः प्रभुः ॥ १४ ॥
atha lIlAkarastatra tapaH paramaduSkaram ॥ tatApa sa vazIzo hi haro duHkhaharaH prabhuH ॥ 14 ॥
But He, the chief of the self-controlled and the remover of man’s misery continued his severe penance.

वसंते प्रसृते तत्र कामो रतिसमन्वितः ॥ चूतं बाणं समाकृष्य स्थितस्तद्वामपार्श्वतः ॥ १५ ॥
vasaMte prasRte tatra kAmo ratisamanvitaH ॥ cUtaM bANaM samAkRSya sthitastadvAmapArzvataH ॥ 15 ॥
When spring spread everywhere, Kāma accompanied by Rati stood on his left side, with the arrow of mango blossom taken out and kept in readiness.

स्वप्रभावं वितस्तार मोहयन्सकलाञ्जनान् ॥ रत्यायुक्तं तदा कामं दृष्ट्वा को वा न मोहितः ॥ १६ ॥
svaprabhAvaM vitastAra mohayansakalAJjanAn ॥ ratyAyuktaM tadA kAmaM dRSTvA ko vA na mohitaH ॥ 16 ॥
Enchanting all people, he spread his influence. Who was not enchanted on seeing Kāma in the company of Rati?

एवं प्रवृत्तसुरतौ शृंगारोऽपि गणैस्सह ॥ हावभावयुतस्तत्र प्रविवेश हरांतिकम् ॥ १७ ॥
evaM pravRttasuratau zRMgAro'pi gaNaissaha ॥ hAvabhAvayutastatra praviveza harAMtikam ॥ 17 ॥
Thus they initiated their dalliance. The sentiment of love too accompanied by coquettish gestures and emotions reached the vicinity of Śiva along with his attendants.

मदनः प्रकटस्तत्र न्यवसच्चित्तगो बहिः ॥ न दृष्टवांस्तदा शंभोश्छिद्रं येन प्रविश्यते ॥१८॥
madanaH prakaTastatra nyavasaccittago bahiH ॥ na dRSTavAMstadA zaMbhozchidraM yena pravizyate ॥18॥
Kāma, usually stationed within the mind manifested himself outside. But he could not find any vulnerable loop-hole in Śiva whereby he could enter Him.

यदा चाप्राप्तविवरस्तस्मिन्योगिवरे स्मरः ॥ महादेवस्तदा सोऽभून्महाभयविमोहितः ॥ १९ ॥
yadA cAprAptavivarastasminyogivare smaraH ॥ mahAdevastadA so'bhUnmahAbhayavimohitaH ॥ 19 ॥
When Kāma did not secure any entry within the great Yogin, he became deluded and frightened much through the magical power of Śiva.

ज्वलज्ज्वालाग्निसंकाशं भालनेत्रसमन्वितम् ॥ ध्यानस्थं शंकरं को वा समासादयितुं क्षमः ॥ 2-3-18-२० ॥
jvalajjvAlAgnisaMkAzaM bhAlanetrasamanvitam ॥ dhyAnasthaM zaMkaraM ko vA samAsAdayituM kSamaH ॥ 2-3-18-20 ॥
Who could gain access to Śiva in meditation, who could fix an eye in his forehead that resembled fire with shooting blazing flames?

एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र सखीभ्यां संयुता शिवा ॥ जगाम शिवपूजार्थं नीत्वा पुष्पाण्यनेकशः ॥ २१ ॥
etasminnaMtare tatra sakhIbhyAM saMyutA zivA ॥ jagAma zivapUjArthaM nItvA puSpANyanekazaH ॥ 21 ॥
In the mean time Pārvatī came there along with her two maids and brought various kinds of flowers for Śiva’s worship.

पृथिव्यां यादृशं लोकैस्सौंदर्यं वर्ण्यते महत् ॥ तत्सर्वमधिकं तस्यां पार्वत्यामस्ति निश्चितम् ॥ २२ ॥
pRthivyAM yAdRzaM lokaissauMdaryaM varNyate mahat ॥ tatsarvamadhikaM tasyAM pArvatyAmasti nizcitam ॥ 22 ॥
Certainly Pārvatī had a greater beauty than the most exquisite lady described by people on the earth.

आर्तवाणि सुपुष्पाणि धृतानि च तया यदा ॥ तत्सौंदर्यं कथं वर्ण्यमपि वर्षशतैरपि ॥२३॥
ArtavANi supuSpANi dhRtAni ca tayA yadA ॥ tatsauMdaryaM kathaM varNyamapi varSazatairapi ॥23॥
When she wore pretty flowers of the season how could her beauty be described even in a hundred years?

यदा शिवसमीपे तु गता सा पर्वतात्मजा ॥ तदैव शंकरो ध्यानं त्यक्त्वा क्षणमवस्थितः ॥२४॥
yadA zivasamIpe tu gatA sA parvatAtmajA ॥ tadaiva zaMkaro dhyAnaM tyaktvA kSaNamavasthitaH ॥24॥
No sooner did she enter within the proximity of Śiva than He came out of his meditation for a short while.

तच्छिद्रं प्राप्य मदनः प्रथमं हर्षणेन तु ॥ बाणेन हर्षयामास पार्श्वस्थं चन्द्रशेखरम् ॥ २५ ॥
tacchidraM prApya madanaH prathamaM harSaNena tu ॥ bANena harSayAmAsa pArzvasthaM candrazekharam ॥ 25 ॥
Profiting by that opportune moment, Kāma, by means of his arrow Harṣaṇa delighted the moon-crest god Śiva who was nearby.

शृंगारैश्च तदा भावैस्सहिता पार्वती हरम् ॥ जगाम कामसाहाय्ये मुने सुरभिणा सह ॥ २६ ॥
zRMgAraizca tadA bhAvaissahitA pArvatI haram ॥ jagAma kAmasAhAyye mune surabhiNA saha ॥ 26 ॥
O sage, in assistance to Kāma, Pārvatī reached the place near Śiva with emotions of love and accompanied by Spring.

तदेवाकृष्य तच्चापं रुच्यर्थं शूलधारिणः ॥ द्रुतं पुष्पशरं तस्मै स्मरोऽमुंचत्सुसंयतः ॥ २७ ॥
tadevAkRSya taccApaM rucyarthaM zUladhAriNaH ॥ drutaM puSpazaraM tasmai smaro'muMcatsusaMyataH ॥ 27 ॥
In order to make the trident-bearing lord take interest in her, Kāma drew his bow very carefully and discharged his flowery arrow on Him.

यथा निरंतरं नित्यमागच्छति तथा शिवम् ॥ तन्नमस्कृत्य तत्पूजां कृत्वा तत्पुरतः स्थिता ॥२८॥
yathA niraMtaraM nityamAgacchati tathA zivam ॥ tannamaskRtya tatpUjAM kRtvA tatpurataH sthitA ॥28॥
As was her usual practice she approached Śiva, bowed to Him, worshipped Him and stood in front of Him (awaiting further instructions).

सा दृष्टा पार्वती तत्र प्रभुणा गिरिशेन हि ॥ विवृण्वती तदांगानि स्त्रीस्वभावात्सुलज्जया ॥ २९ ॥
sA dRSTA pArvatI tatra prabhuNA girizena hi ॥ vivRNvatI tadAMgAni strIsvabhAvAtsulajjayA ॥ 29 ॥
Pārvatī was stared at by lord Śiva, while she was laying bare some of the limbs bashfully, as is natural to women in such circumstances.

सुसंस्मृत्य वरं तस्या विधिदत्तं पुरा प्रभुः ॥ शिवोपि वर्णयामास तदंगानि मुदा मुने ॥ 2-3-18-३० ॥
susaMsmRtya varaM tasyA vidhidattaM purA prabhuH ॥ zivopi varNayAmAsa tadaMgAni mudA mune ॥ 2-3-18-30 ॥
Remembering the boon granted to her by Brahmā formerly, O sage, lord Śiva began to describe her limbs joyfully.

शिव उवाच ॥ कि मुखं किं शशांकश्च किं नेत्रे चोत्पले च किम् ॥ भ्रुकुट्यौ धनुषी चैते कंदर्पस्य महात्मनः ॥३१ ॥
ziva uvAca ॥ ki mukhaM kiM zazAMkazca kiM netre cotpale ca kim ॥ bhrukuTyau dhanuSI caite kaMdarpasya mahAtmanaH ॥31 ॥
Śiva said: Is this your face or the moon? Are these your eyes or lotus petals? These two eyebrows are the bows of Kāma of noble soul.

अधरः किं च बिंबं किं किं नासा शुकचंचुका ॥ किं स्वरः कोकिलालापः किं मध्यं चाथ वेदिका ॥ ३२ ॥
adharaH kiM ca biMbaM kiM kiM nAsA zukacaMcukA ॥ kiM svaraH kokilAlApaH kiM madhyaM cAtha vedikA ॥ 32 ॥
Is this your lower lip or Bimba fruit? Is this your nose or the beak of a parrot? Do I hear your voice or the cooing of the cuckoo? Is this your slender waist or the sacrificial altar?

किं गतिर्वर्ण्यते ह्यस्याः किं रूपं वर्ण्यते मुहुः ॥ पुष्पाणि किं च वर्ण्यंते वस्त्राणि च तथा पुनः ॥३३॥
kiM gatirvarNyate hyasyAH kiM rUpaM varNyate muhuH ॥ puSpANi kiM ca varNyaMte vastrANi ca tathA punaH ॥33॥
How can her gait be described? How can her comely appearance be described? How can the flowers be described? How can the clothes be described?

लालित्यं चारु यत्सृष्टौ तदेकत्र विनिर्मितम् ॥ सर्वथा रमणीयानि सर्वांगानि न संशयः ॥३४॥
lAlityaM cAru yatsRSTau tadekatra vinirmitam ॥ sarvathA ramaNIyAni sarvAMgAni na saMzayaH ॥34॥
Whatever is graceful and sweet in the creation has been incorporated here. Indeed, all her limbs are exquisite in every respect.

अहो धन्यतरा चेयं पार्वत्यद्भुतरूपिणी ॥ एतत्समा न त्रैलोक्ये नारी कापि सुरूपिणी॥३५॥
aho dhanyatarA ceyaM pArvatyadbhutarUpiNI ॥ etatsamA na trailokye nArI kApi surUpiNI॥35॥
How blessed is this Pārvatī of mysteriously wonderful features. There is no other woman equal to her in beauty in the three worlds.

सुलावण्यानिधिश्चेयमद्भुतांगानि बिभ्रती ॥ विमोहिनी मुनीनां च महासुखविवर्द्धिनी ॥ ३६ ॥
sulAvaNyAnidhizceyamadbhutAMgAni bibhratI ॥ vimohinI munInAM ca mahAsukhavivarddhinI ॥ 36 ॥
She is a storehouse of the finest beauty. She has wondrous beautiful limbs. She is an enchantress of even sages. She increases great happiness.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्येवं वर्णयित्वा तु तदंगानि मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ विधिदत्तवराध्यासाद्धरस्तु विरराम ह ॥३७॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityevaM varNayitvA tu tadaMgAni muhurmuhuH ॥ vidhidattavarAdhyAsAddharastu virarAma ha ॥37॥
Brahmā said: After describing her body again and again, recollecting the boon granted by Brahmā, Śiva stopped.

हस्तं वस्त्रांतरे यावदचालयत शंकरः ॥ स्त्रीस्वभावाच्च सा तत्र लज्जिता दूरतो गता ॥ ३८॥
hastaM vastrAMtare yAvadacAlayata zaMkaraH ॥ strIsvabhAvAcca sA tatra lajjitA dUrato gatA ॥ 38॥
When Śiva put His hand within her garment and moved it, she, as is natural to women, bashfully withdrew and kept aloof.

विवृण्वती निजांगानि पश्यंती च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ सुवीक्षणैर्महामोदात्सुस्मिताभूच्छिवा मुने ॥३९॥
vivRNvatI nijAMgAni pazyaMtI ca muhurmuhuH ॥ suvIkSaNairmahAmodAtsusmitAbhUcchivA mune ॥39॥
O sage, then Pārvatī smilingly laid bare some parts of her body and cast graceful glances at Him with great pleasure.

एवं चेष्टां तदा दृष्ट्वा शंभुर्मोहमुपागतः॥ उवाच वचनं चैवं महालीलो महेश्वरः ॥2-3-18-४०॥
evaM ceSTAM tadA dRSTvA zaMbhurmohamupAgataH॥ uvAca vacanaM caivaM mahAlIlo mahezvaraH ॥2-3-18-40॥
On seeing these movements and gestures Śiva became fascinated. Lord Śiva indulging in great divine sports spoke these words.

अस्या दर्शनमात्रेण महानंदो भवत्यलम् ॥ यदालिंगनमेनस्याः कुर्य्यां किन्तु ततस्सुखम् ॥ ४१ ॥
asyA darzanamAtreNa mahAnaMdo bhavatyalam ॥ yadAliMganamenasyAH kuryyAM kintu tatassukham ॥ 41 ॥
I feel great pleasure on merely seeing her. What pleasure shall I derive by embracing her?

क्षणमात्रं विचार्य्येत्थं संपूज्य गिरिजां ततः ॥ प्रबुद्धस्य महायोगी सुविरक्तो जगाविति ॥ ४२ ॥
kSaNamAtraM vicAryyetthaM saMpUjya girijAM tataH ॥ prabuddhasya mahAyogI suvirakto jagAviti ॥ 42 ॥

kiM jAtaM caritaM citraM kimahaM mohamAgataH ॥ kAmena vikRtazcAdya bhUtvApi prabhurIzvaraH ॥ 43 ॥
How wonderful and mysterious is the situation that has arisen! How is it that I have been deluded and fascinated? Though I am the lord and master, I have been perturbed by Kāma.

If I, the master, were to yearn for the touch of a woman’s limbs what will not be done by other incompetent and insignificant creatures.

Thus resuming detachment, lord Śiva forbade her sitting on the couch. How can there be a downfall for the great lord Śiva?
