॥ brahmovAca ॥ gateSu teSu deveSu zakraH sasmAra vai smaram ॥ pIDitastArakenAtidetyena ca durAtmanA ॥ 1 ॥
Brahmā said: When the gods had gone, Indra remembered Kama. He was so afflicted by Tāraka, the wicked demon.

आगतस्तत्क्षणात्कामस्सवसंतो रतिप्रियः ॥ सावलेपो युतो रत्या त्रैलोक्य विजयी प्रभुः ॥ २ ॥
AgatastatkSaNAtkAmassavasaMto ratipriyaH ॥ sAvalepo yuto ratyA trailokya vijayI prabhuH ॥ 2 ॥
In an instant, Kāma, the lover of Rati, came there along with Vasanta. He was accompanied by Rati too. Being powerful enough to conquer the three worlds he was very haughty.

Making due obeisance standing in front of Indra, the lofty-minded Kāma joined his palms in reverence and said:

काम उवाच ॥ किं कार्य्यं ते समुत्पन्नं स्मृतोऽहं केन हेतुना ॥ तत्त्वं कथय देवेश तत्कर्तुं समुपागतः ॥ ४ ॥
kAma uvAca ॥ kiM kAryyaM te samutpannaM smRto'haM kena hetunA ॥ tattvaM kathaya deveza tatkartuM samupAgataH ॥ 4 ॥
Kāma said: What is the matter that has cropped up now? Wherefore was I remembered? Please tell me. I am here to carry it out.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ tacchrutvA vacanaM tasya kaMdarpasya surezvaraH ॥ uvAca vacanaM prItyA yuktaM yuktamiti stuvan ॥ 5 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of Kāma, Indra, the lord of the gods, said praising him lovingly saying “well done, very proper”.

॥ शक्र उवाच॥ तव साधु समारम्भो यन्मे कार्य्यमुपस्थितम्॥ तत्कतुर्मुद्यतोऽसि त्वं धन्योऽसि मकरध्वज ॥६॥
॥ zakra uvAca॥ tava sAdhu samArambho yanme kAryyamupasthitam॥ tatkaturmudyato'si tvaM dhanyo'si makaradhvaja ॥6॥
Indra said:O Kāma you are blessed indeed, since you are in readiness to carry out the affair I have on hand. You have begun well.

प्रस्तुतं शृणु मद्वाक्यं कथयामि तवाग्रतः॥ मदीयं चैव यत्कार्यं त्वदीयं तन्न चान्यथा ॥७॥
prastutaM zRNu madvAkyaM kathayAmi tavAgrataH॥ madIyaM caiva yatkAryaM tvadIyaM tanna cAnyathA ॥7॥
Listen to what is relevant to the context. I shall tell you everything. My job is equally your job and not otherwise.

मित्राणि मम संत्येव बहूनि सुमहांति च ॥ परं तु स्मर सन्मित्रं त्वत्तुल्यं न हि कुत्रचित् ॥ ८ ॥
mitrANi mama saMtyeva bahUni sumahAMti ca ॥ paraM tu smara sanmitraM tvattulyaM na hi kutracit ॥ 8 ॥
I have many friends and great friends at that. But, O Kāma, I have no other friend on a par with you anywhere.

जयार्थं मे द्वयं तात निर्मितं वजमुत्तमम् ॥ वज्रं च निष्फलं स्याद्वै त्वं तु नैव कदाचन ॥ ९ ॥
jayArthaM me dvayaM tAta nirmitaM vajamuttamam ॥ vajraM ca niSphalaM syAdvai tvaM tu naiva kadAcana ॥ 9 ॥
O dear, for my conquest, the unparallelled thunderbolt has been made. Even that weapon may sometimes be ineffective but you are never so.

यतो हितं प्रजायेत ततः को नु प्रियः परः ॥ तस्मान्मित्रवरस्त्वं हि मत्कार्य्यं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥ 2-3-17-१० ॥
yato hitaM prajAyeta tataH ko nu priyaH paraH ॥ tasmAnmitravarastvaM hi matkAryyaM kartumarhasi ॥ 2-3-17-10 ॥
Who can be dearer than the person from whom one derives benefit? Hence you, my greatest friend, must carry out my task.

मम दुःखं समुत्पन्नमसाध्य चापि कालजम् ॥ केनापि नैव तच्छक्यं दूरीकर्तुं त्वया विना ॥ ११ ॥
mama duHkhaM samutpannamasAdhya cApi kAlajam ॥ kenApi naiva tacchakyaM dUrIkartuM tvayA vinA ॥ 11 ॥
Time being accursed, a great irremediable misery has befallen me. None other than you can dispel it.

दातुः परीक्षा दुर्भिक्षे रणे शूरस्य जायते ॥ आपत्काले तु मित्रस्याशक्तौ स्त्रीणां कुलस्य हि ॥ १२ ॥
dAtuH parIkSA durbhikSe raNe zUrasya jAyate ॥ ApatkAle tu mitrasyAzaktau strINAM kulasya hi ॥ 12 ॥
The test of a donor is at the time of famine; the test of a warrior is at the time of battle; the test of a friend is at the time of adversity and the test of a woman is in the financial weakness of the family.

विनये संकटे प्राप्तेऽवितथस्य परोक्षतः ॥ सुस्नेहस्य तथा तात नान्यथा सत्यमीरितम् ॥ १३ ॥
vinaye saMkaTe prApte'vitathasya parokSataH ॥ susnehasya tathA tAta nAnyathA satyamIritam ॥ 13 ॥
O dear, the test of a real friend is in the time of distress and is also based on what he does behind the back. It is not otherwise. This is truth.

प्राप्तायां वै ममापत्ताववार्यायां परेण हि ॥ परीक्षा च त्वदीयाऽद्य मित्रवर्य भविष्यति ॥१४॥
prAptAyAM vai mamApattAvavAryAyAM pareNa hi ॥ parIkSA ca tvadIyA'dya mitravarya bhaviSyati ॥14॥
Now that an adversity has befallen me, which cannot be thwarted by anyone else, O dear friend, it shall be a test for you today.

न केवलं मदीयं च कार्य्यमस्ति सुखावहम् ॥ किं तु सर्वसुरादीनां कार्य्यमेतन्न संशयः ॥१५॥
na kevalaM madIyaM ca kAryyamasti sukhAvaham ॥ kiM tu sarvasurAdInAM kAryyametanna saMzayaH ॥15॥
This is not a matter that brings pleasure to me alone. This is a matter that concerns all the gods and others too.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्येतन्मघवद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा तु मकरध्वजाः ॥ उवाच प्रेमगभीरं वाक्यं सुस्मितपूर्वकम् ॥ १६ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityetanmaghavadvAkyaM zrutvA tu makaradhvajAH ॥ uvAca premagabhIraM vAkyaM susmitapUrvakam ॥ 16 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these words of Indra the fish-bannered god Kāma spoke smilingly in words indicating love and gravity.

॥ काम उवाच ॥ किमर्थमित्थं वदसि नोत्तरं वच्म्यहं तव ॥ उपकृत्कृत्रिमं लोके दृश्यते कथ्यते न च ॥१७॥
॥ kAma uvAca ॥ kimarthamitthaM vadasi nottaraM vacmyahaM tava ॥ upakRtkRtrimaM loke dRzyate kathyate na ca ॥17॥
Kāma said: Why do you say like this? I make no answer to you. A helping unreal friend is neither seen nor spoken of in the world.

सङ्कटे बहु यो ब्रूते स किं कार्य्यं करिष्यति ॥ तथापि च महाराज कथयामि शृणु प्रभो ॥ १८ ॥
saGkaTe bahu yo brUte sa kiM kAryyaM kariSyati ॥ tathApi ca mahArAja kathayAmi zRNu prabho ॥ 18 ॥
He who speaks much at the time of adversity will not turn out much. Yet, O king, my lord, I shall say something. Please listen.

पदं ते कर्षितुं यो वै तपस्तपति दारुणम् ॥ पातयिष्याम्यहं तं च शत्रुं ते मित्र सर्वथा ॥ १९ ॥
padaM te karSituM yo vai tapastapati dAruNam ॥ pAtayiSyAmyahaM taM ca zatruM te mitra sarvathA ॥ 19 ॥
O dear friend, I shall cause the downfall of that enemy of yours who is performing a severe penance to usurp your position.

क्षणेन भ्रंशयिष्यामि कटाक्षेण वरस्त्रियाः ॥ देवर्षिदानवादींश्च नराणां गणना न मे ॥2-3-17-२०॥
kSaNena bhraMzayiSyAmi kaTAkSeNa varastriyAH ॥ devarSidAnavAdIMzca narANAM gaNanA na me ॥2-3-17-20॥
I shall topple gods, sages, demons and others through the side-glances of a beautiful woman. I do not at all take human beings into consideration.

वज्रं तिष्ठतु दूरे वै शस्त्राण्यन्यान्यनेकशः ॥ किं ते कार्यं करिष्यंति मयि मित्र उपस्थिते ॥२१॥
vajraM tiSThatu dUre vai zastrANyanyAnyanekazaH ॥ kiM te kAryaM kariSyaMti mayi mitra upasthite ॥21॥
Let your thunderbolt and other weapons of innumerable varieties be set aside. What will they do when I, your friend, am present?

ब्रह्माणं वा हरिं वापि भ्रष्टं कुर्य्यां न संशयः ॥ अन्येषां गणना नास्ति पातयेयं हरं त्वपि ॥२२॥
brahmANaM vA hariM vApi bhraSTaM kuryyAM na saMzayaH ॥ anyeSAM gaNanA nAsti pAtayeyaM haraM tvapi ॥22॥
I can undoubtedly make Brahmā and Viṣṇu go astray. Others are of no consideration. I shall make even Śiva fall.

पंचैव मृदवो बाणास्ते च पुष्पमया मम ॥ चापस्त्रिधा पुष्पमयश्शिंजिनी भ्रमरार्ज्जिता ॥ बलं सुदयिता मे हि वसंतः सचिवस्स्मृतः ॥ २३ ॥
paMcaiva mRdavo bANAste ca puSpamayA mama ॥ cApastridhA puSpamayazziMjinI bhramarArjjitA ॥ balaM sudayitA me hi vasaMtaH sacivassmRtaH ॥ 23 ॥
I have only five arrows that are soft and flowery. My bow is of three types. That too is flowery. The bowstring consists of bees.

अहं पञ्चबलोदेवा मित्रं मम सुधानिधिः ॥ २४ ॥
ahaM paJcabalodevA mitraM mama sudhAnidhiH ॥ 24 ॥
My support and strength is my beloved wife Ratī. Spring is my minister. O god, I am having five forces. The moon, the storehouse of nectar, is my friend.

सेनाधिपश्च शृंगारो हावभावाश्च सैनिकाः ॥ सर्वे मे मृदवः शक्र अहं चापि तथाविधः॥२५॥
senAdhipazca zRMgAro hAvabhAvAzca sainikAH ॥ sarve me mRdavaH zakra ahaM cApi tathAvidhaH॥25॥
The sentiment of love is my commander-in-chief. The coquettish gestures and emotions are my soldiers. All these are soft and gentle. O Indra, I too am of that sort.

यद्येन पूर्यते कार्य्यं धीमांस्तत्तेन योजयेत्॥ मम योग्यं तु यत्कार्य्यं सर्वं तन्मे नियोजय॥२६॥
yadyena pUryate kAryyaM dhImAMstattena yojayet॥ mama yogyaM tu yatkAryyaM sarvaM tanme niyojaya॥26॥
An intelligent man shall put together things that are mutually complementary. You shall therefore engage me in a task that accords with my capacity.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityevaM tu vacastasya zrutvA zakrassuharSitaH ॥ uvAca praNamanvAcA kAmaM kAMtAsukhAvaham ॥ 27 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing his words, Indra was much pleased. Pleasing Kāma, the bestower of cherished happiness, by means of his words, he spoke.

शक्र उवाच ॥ यत्कार्य्यं मनसोद्दिष्टं मया तात मनोभव ॥ कर्त्तुं तत्त्वं समर्थोऽसि नान्यस्मात्तस्यसम्भवः ॥२८॥
zakra uvAca ॥ yatkAryyaM manasoddiSTaM mayA tAta manobhava ॥ karttuM tattvaM samartho'si nAnyasmAttasyasambhavaH ॥28॥
Indra said: O dear Kāma, you are competent to carry out the task which I have conceived in my mind. It cannot be realised through anyone else.

शृणु काम प्रवक्ष्यामि यथार्थं मित्रसत्तम ॥ यदर्थे च स्पृहा जाता तव चाद्य मनोभव ॥२९॥
zRNu kAma pravakSyAmi yathArthaM mitrasattama ॥ yadarthe ca spRhA jAtA tava cAdya manobhava ॥29॥
O Kāma, foremost among my friends, listen. I shall explain truly for what I remembered you and desired your presence, O Kāma.

तारकाख्यो महादैत्यो ब्रह्मणो वरमद्भुतम् ॥ अभूदजेयस्संप्राप्य सर्वेषामपि दुःखदः ॥ 2-3-17-३० ॥
tArakAkhyo mahAdaityo brahmaNo varamadbhutam ॥ abhUdajeyassaMprApya sarveSAmapi duHkhadaH ॥ 2-3-17-30 ॥
Securing a wonderful boon from Brahmā, the great demon Tāraka has become invincible and a pest for everyone.

तेन संपीड्यते लोको नष्टा धर्मा ह्यनेकशः ॥ दुःखिता निर्जरास्सर्वे ऋषयश्च तथाखिलाः ॥ ३१ ॥
tena saMpIDyate loko naSTA dharmA hyanekazaH ॥ duHkhitA nirjarAssarve RSayazca tathAkhilAH ॥ 31 ॥
The entire world is harassed by him. Many virtuous rites are destroyed. The gods have become miserable and so also the sages.

देवैश्च सकलैस्तेन कृतं युद्धं यथाबलम् ॥ सर्वेषां चायुधान्यत्र विफलान्यभवन्पुरा ॥ ३२ ॥
devaizca sakalaistena kRtaM yuddhaM yathAbalam ॥ sarveSAM cAyudhAnyatra viphalAnyabhavanpurA ॥ 32 ॥
He had been fought by the gods to the utmost of their ability formerly. But the weapons of all the gods became quite futile.

भग्नः पाशो जलेशस्य हरिं चक्रं सुदर्शनम् ॥ तत्कुण्ठितमभूत्तस्य कण्ठे क्षिप्तं च विष्णुना ॥ ३३ ॥
bhagnaH pAzo jalezasya hariM cakraM sudarzanam ॥ tatkuNThitamabhUttasya kaNThe kSiptaM ca viSNunA ॥ 33 ॥
The noose of Varuṇa, the god of waters, snapped. When hurled at his neck by Viṣṇu, the discus Sudarśana was blunted.

एतस्य मरणं प्रोक्तं प्रजेशेन दुरात्मनः ॥ शम्भोर्वीर्योद्भवाद्बालान्महायोगीश्वरस्य हि ॥ ३४ ॥
etasya maraNaM proktaM prajezena durAtmanaH ॥ zambhorvIryodbhavAdbAlAnmahAyogIzvarasya hi ॥ 34 ॥
The death of this wicked demon has been foretold by Brahmā, the lord of the people, at the hands of the boy born of Śiva. the great Yogin.

एतत्कार्य्यं त्वया साधु कर्तव्यं सुप्रयत्नतः ॥ ततस्स्यान्मित्रवर्य्याति देवानां नः परं सुखम् ॥ ३५ ॥
etatkAryyaM tvayA sAdhu kartavyaM suprayatnataH ॥ tatassyAnmitravaryyAti devAnAM naH paraM sukham ॥ 35 ॥
O dear friend, this task must be achieved by you diligently. Then we, the gods, can be very happy.

ममापि विहितं तस्मात्सर्वलोकसुखावहम् ॥ मित्रधर्मं हृदि स्मृत्वा कर्तुमर्हसि सांप्रतम् ॥ ३६ ॥
mamApi vihitaM tasmAtsarvalokasukhAvaham ॥ mitradharmaM hRdi smRtvA kartumarhasi sAMpratam ॥ 36 ॥
It will be beneficent to me. It will render the whole world happy. Realising the duties of a friend you are now to act.

शंभुस्स गिरिराजे हि तपः परममास्थितः ॥ स प्रभुर्नापि कामेन स्वतंत्रः परमेश्वरः ॥ ३७ ॥
zaMbhussa girirAje hi tapaH paramamAsthitaH ॥ sa prabhurnApi kAmena svataMtraH paramezvaraH ॥ 37 ॥
Śiva is at present engaged in a great penance. The supreme lord is always independent. It is not to achieve any desire that He performs the penance.

तत्समीपे च देवाथ पार्वती स्वसखीयुता ॥ सेवमाना तिष्ठतीति पित्राज्ञप्ता मया श्रुतम् ॥ ३८ ॥
tatsamIpe ca devAtha pArvatI svasakhIyutA ॥ sevamAnA tiSThatIti pitrAjJaptA mayA zrutam ॥ 38 ॥
For the sake of gods, at the bidding of her father, Pārvatī is attending on Him, I hear.

यथा तस्यां रुचिस्तस्य शिवस्य नियतात्मनः ॥ जायते नितरां मार तथा कार्यं त्वया ध्रुवम् ॥३९॥
yathA tasyAM rucistasya zivasya niyatAtmanaH ॥ jAyate nitarAM mAra tathA kAryaM tvayA dhruvam ॥39॥
O Kāma, you shall certainly do everything necessary to bring about an interest in her in the mind of Śiva who has self-control.

इति कृत्वा कृती स्यास्त्वं सर्वं दुःखं विनंक्ष्यति ॥ लोके स्थायी प्रतापस्ते भविष्यति न चान्यथा ॥2-3-17-४०॥
iti kRtvA kRtI syAstvaM sarvaM duHkhaM vinaMkSyati ॥ loke sthAyI pratApaste bhaviSyati na cAnyathA ॥2-3-17-40॥
You will become contented after this. Your miseries will be destroyed. Your exploit will be permanently established in the world. Not otherwise.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्युक्तस्य तु कामो हि प्रफुल्लमुखपंकज ॥ प्रेम्णोवाचेति देवेशं करिष्यामि न संशयः ॥ ४१ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityuktasya tu kAmo hi praphullamukhapaMkaja ॥ premNovAceti devezaM kariSyAmi na saMzayaH ॥ 41 ॥
Brahmā said: On being thus addressed, Kāma was glad, his face beaming like a full blown lotus. He lovingly said to the lord of gods, “I shall undoubtedly do it.”

इत्युक्त्वा वचनं तस्मै तथेत्योमिति तद्वचः ॥ अग्रहीत्तरसा कामः शिवमायाविमोहितः ॥ ४२ ॥
ityuktvA vacanaM tasmai tathetyomiti tadvacaH ॥ agrahIttarasA kAmaH zivamAyAvimohitaH ॥ 42 ॥
After saying this when he said “So be it” he said “yes.” Kāma accepted it because he was deluded by Śiva’s illusion.

To the very place where the great Lord of Yogis was engaged in supreme austerity, went the ever-delighted one, Kāma (the god of love), joyfully, accompanied by Spring (Vasanta).
