Brahmā said: Then that Varāṅgī. devoted to him, conceived. The child within her body developed in many years with its brilliance.

tataH sA samaye pUrNe varAMgI suSuve sutam॥ mahAkAyaM mahAvIryaM prajvalaMtaM dizo daza॥2॥
That Varāṅgī, when the time was complete, delivered of a son of huge body and great strength dazzling the ten quarters.

At the same time, several phenomena of evil portent forboding misery and distress happened, when the son of Varāṅgī was born making the gods miserable.

divi bhuvyaMtarikSe ca sarvalokabhayaMkarAH ॥ anarthasUcakAstAta trividhAstAnbravImyaham ॥ 4 ॥
O dear, the phenomena of three varieties indicating great calamity and terrifying the worlds occurred in the sky, heaven and earth. I shall narrate them.

With a terrifying noise, thunderbolts fell along with comets; shooting meteors rose up, making the world miserable.

cacAla vasudhA sAdrirjajvalussakalA dizaH ॥ cukSubhussaritassarvAH sAgarAzca vizeSataH ॥ 6 ॥
The earth with all the mountains quaked; the quarters blazed; the rivers and oceans were particularly agitated.

The rough wind blew with a hissing noise. Gusts of wind with troops of tempests and dust for banner uprooted several trees.

sarAhvossUryyavidhvostu muhuH paridhayo'bhavan॥ mahAbhayasya viprendra sUcakAssukhahArakaH ॥8॥
O great brahmin, the misty haloes around the sun and the moon in the grip of Rāhu became the harbingers of great fear and unhappiness.

mahIdhravivarebhyazca nirghAtA bhayasUcakAH ॥ rathanirhrAdatulyAzca jajJire'vasare tataH ॥9॥
At that time terrifying sounds that resembled those of the chariot issued forth from cracks and crevices in the mountains.

sRgAlolUkaTaMkArairvamantyo mukhato'nalam ॥ aMtargrAmeSu vikaTaM praNedurazivAzzivAH ॥ 2-3-15-10 ॥
Within villages, inauspicious vixens howled hideously vomitting fires; as it were, through their mouths along with the hissing and twanging sounds of the hootings and howlings of owls and jackals.

yatastato grAmasiMhA unnamayya zirodharAm ॥ saMgItavadrodanavadvyamucanvividhAnravAn ॥11॥
Lifting up their necks, the dogs barked in diverse ways producing sounds of singing or lamenting here and there.

khArkArarabhasA mattAH surairghnaMto rasAMkharAH ॥ varUthazastadA tAta paryadhAvannitastataH ॥12॥
O dear, groups of mad asses ran here and there braying loudly and digging the ground with their hoofs.

khagA udapatannIDAdrAsabhatrastamAnasaH ॥ krozaMto vyagracittAzca sthitamApurna kutracit ॥ 13 ॥
Terrified by the asses, birds flew up from their nests. In their excitement and flutter they honked and cronked. They did not find a peaceful perch anywhere.

शकृन्मूत्रमकार्षुश्च गोष्ठेऽरण्ये भयाकुलः ॥ बभ्रमुः स्थितिमापुर्नो पशवस्ताडिता इव ॥१४॥
zakRnmUtramakArSuzca goSThe'raNye bhayAkulaH ॥ babhramuH sthitimApurno pazavastADitA iva ॥14॥
Beasts in sheds and forests roamed here and there in great fright as though beaten and driven about, passing urine and shitting dungs as they pleased.

gAvo'trasannasRgdohA vASpanetrA bhayAkulAH ॥ toyadA abhavaMstatra bhayadAH pUyavarSiNaH ॥15॥
Frightened cows sprayed blood through their udders; their eyes brimmed with tears, clouds showering putrid matter became terrifying.

व्यरुदन्प्रतिमास्तत्र देवानामुत्पतिष्णवः ॥ विनाऽनिलं द्रुमाः पेतुर्ग्रहयुद्धं बभूव खे ॥१६॥
vyarudanpratimAstatra devAnAmutpatiSNavaH ॥ vinA'nilaM drumAH peturgrahayuddhaM babhUva khe ॥16॥
Idols and images of deities appeared to cry and fly up. Even when there was no gale, trees fell down. Planets in the sky clashed with one another.

इत्यादिका बहूत्पाता जज्ञिरे मुनिसत्तम ॥ अज्ञानिनो जनास्तत्र मेनिरे विश्वसंप्लवम् ॥ १७ ॥
ityAdikA bahUtpAtA jajJire munisattama ॥ ajJAnino janAstatra menire vizvasaMplavam ॥ 17 ॥
O excellent sage, these and similar portending phenomena occurred: Ignorant persons thought the submersion of the whole universe was imminent.

अथ प्रजापतिर्नामाकरोत्तस्यासुरस्य वै ॥ तारकेति विचार्यैव कश्यपो हि महौजसः ॥ १८ ॥
atha prajApatirnAmAkarottasyAsurasya vai ॥ tAraketi vicAryaiva kazyapo hi mahaujasaH ॥ 18 ॥
Then Kaśyapa Prajāpati thought well and named the powerful demon Tāraka.

महावीरस्य सहसा व्यज्यमानात्मपौरुषः ॥ ववृधेत्यश्मसारेण कायेनाद्रिपतिर्यथा ॥ १९ ॥
mahAvIrasya sahasA vyajyamAnAtmapauruSaH ॥ vavRdhetyazmasAreNa kAyenAdripatiryathA ॥ 19 ॥
That heroic demon, with his manliness and valour manifesting quickly grew and developed with his steely frame like the lord of mountains.

अथो स तारको दैत्यो महाबलपराक्रमः ॥ तपः कर्तुं जनन्याश्चाज्ञां ययाचे महामनाः ॥2-3-15-२०॥
atho sa tArako daityo mahAbalaparAkramaH ॥ tapaH kartuM jananyAzcAjJAM yayAce mahAmanAH ॥2-3-15-20॥
Then the demon Tāraka, of great strength and exploit, endowed with a lofty mind, requested permission of his mother for performing penance.

प्राप्ताज्ञः स महामायी मायिनामपि मोहकः ॥ सर्वदेवजयं कर्तुं तपोर्थं मन आदधे ॥ २१ ॥
prAptAjJaH sa mahAmAyI mAyinAmapi mohakaH ॥ sarvadevajayaM kartuM taporthaM mana Adadhe ॥ 21 ॥
The permission having been secured, that demon possessing great power of illusion and capable of deluding even experts in the magical art, thought of performing penance in order to conquer all the gods.

मधोर्वनमुपागम्य गुर्वाज्ञाप्रतिपालकः ॥ विधिमुद्दिश्य विधिवत्तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम् ॥२२॥
madhorvanamupAgamya gurvAjJApratipAlakaH ॥ vidhimuddizya vidhivattapastepe sudAruNam ॥22॥
Strictly adhering to the directions of his elders and preceptors he went to the forest of Madhu and performed a severe penance duly, having Brahmā as his objective.

ऊर्द्ध्वबाहुश्चैकपादो रविं पश्यन्स चक्षुषा ॥ शतवर्षं तपश्चक्रे दृढचित्तो दृढव्रतः ॥२३॥
UrddhvabAhuzcaikapAdo raviM pazyansa cakSuSA ॥ zatavarSaM tapazcakre dRDhacitto dRDhavrataH ॥23॥
For a hundred years he performed penance with his hands lifted up, standing on only one leg and gazing at the sun. With his mind steady and firm he observed all sacred rites.

अंगुष्ठेन भुवं स्पृष्ट्वा शत वर्षं च तादृशः ॥ तेपे तपो दृढात्मा स तारकोऽसुरराट्प्रभुः ॥२४॥
aMguSThena bhuvaM spRSTvA zata varSaM ca tAdRzaH ॥ tepe tapo dRDhAtmA sa tArako'surarATprabhuH ॥24॥
Then for a hundred years, the lord and king of Asuras, Tāraka performed the penance: stood steady touching the ground with the single big toe.

शतवर्षं जलं प्राश्नञ्च्छतवर्षं च वायुभुक्॥ शतवर्ष जले तिष्ठञ्च्छतं च स्थंडिलेऽतपत् ॥२५॥
zatavarSaM jalaM prAznaJcchatavarSaM ca vAyubhuk॥ zatavarSa jale tiSThaJcchataM ca sthaMDile'tapat ॥25॥
For hundred years he performed penance by drinking only water; another hundred years by sustaining himself on air alone, another hundred years standing in water and another hundred years standing on dry land.

शतवर्षं तथा चाग्नौ शतवर्षमधोमुखः ॥ शतवर्षं तु हस्तस्य तलेन च भुवं स्थित ॥२६॥
zatavarSaM tathA cAgnau zatavarSamadhomukhaH ॥ zatavarSaM tu hastasya talena ca bhuvaM sthita ॥26॥
A hundred years he performed the penance amidst fires, a hundred years in a topsy-turvy position and a hundred years supported on the ground by the palms of his hands.

शतवर्षं तु वृक्षस्य शाखामालब्य वै मुने ॥ पादाभ्यां शुचिधूमं हि पिबंश्चाधोमुखस्तथा ॥२७॥
zatavarSaM tu vRkSasya zAkhAmAlabya vai mune ॥ pAdAbhyAM zucidhUmaM hi pibaMzcAdhomukhastathA ॥27॥
O sage, a hundred years he remained with his head down and feet up clinging fast to the branch of a tree and inhaling the pure smoke of the sacrificial fire.

एवं कष्टतरं तेपे सुतपस्स तु दैत्यराट्॥ काममुद्दिश्य विधिवच्छृण्वतामपि दुस्सहम्॥२८॥
evaM kaSTataraM tepe sutapassa tu daityarAT॥ kAmamuddizya vidhivacchRNvatAmapi dussaham॥28॥
Thus with ardour, the king of the demons performed the severe penance duly unbearable even to those who heard about it.

तत्रैवं तपतस्तस्य महत्तेजो विनिस्सृतम्॥ शिरसस्सर्वंसंसर्पि महोपद्रवकृन्मुने॥२९॥
tatraivaM tapatastasya mahattejo vinissRtam॥ zirasassarvaMsaMsarpi mahopadravakRnmune॥29॥
O sage, in the process of such a penance, a huge mass of light shot up from his head and spread all round. It caused great havoc.

तेनैव देवलोकास्ते दग्धप्राया बभूविरे॥ अभितो दुःखमापन्नास्सर्वे देवर्षयो मुने॥2-3-15-३०॥
tenaiva devalokAste dagdhaprAyA babhUvire॥ abhito duHkhamApannAssarve devarSayo mune॥2-3-15-30॥
All the worlds of the gods were well nigh consumed by it alone. O sage, all the celestial sages were hard hit and distressed.

इंद्रश्च भयमापेदे ऽधिकं देवेश्वरस्तदा॥ तपस्यत्यद्य कश्चिद्वै मत्पदं धर्षयिष्यति ॥३१ ॥
iMdrazca bhayamApede 'dhikaM devezvarastadA॥ tapasyatyadya kazcidvai matpadaM dharSayiSyati ॥31 ॥
Indra, the lord of gods, was extremely terrified. He thought “Some one is performing a penance. Surely he will usurp my position.

अकांडे चैव ब्रह्माण्डं संहरिष्यत्ययं प्रभु ॥ इति संशयमापन्ना निश्चयं नोपलेभिरे ॥३२॥
akAMDe caiva brahmANDaM saMhariSyatyayaM prabhu ॥ iti saMzayamApannA nizcayaM nopalebhire ॥32॥
This master mind shall in a trice destroy the whole cosmos”. All those who entertained similar doubts could not decide what to do.

ततस्सर्वे सुसंमन्त्र्य मिथस्ते निर्जरर्षयः ॥ मल्लोकमगमन्भीता दीना मां समुपस्थिताः ॥ ३३ ॥
tatassarve susaMmantrya mithaste nirjararSayaH ॥ mallokamagamanbhItA dInA mAM samupasthitAH ॥ 33 ॥
Then all those gods and sages consulted one another and in their great fright they came to my world and approached me in a piteous plight.

मां प्रणम्य सुसंस्तूय सर्वे ते क्लिष्टचेतसः ॥ कृतस्वंजलयो मह्यं वृत्तं सर्वं न्यवेदयन् ॥ ३४ ॥
mAM praNamya susaMstUya sarve te kliSTacetasaH ॥ kRtasvaMjalayo mahyaM vRttaM sarvaM nyavedayan ॥ 34 ॥
Bowing to and eulogising me with palms joined in reverence, all of them explained everything to me distressed in mind that they were.

अहं सर्वं सुनिश्चित्य कारणं तस्य सद्धिया ॥ वरं दातुं गतस्तत्र यत्र तप्यति सोऽसुरः ॥ ३५ ॥
ahaM sarvaM sunizcitya kAraNaM tasya saddhiyA ॥ varaM dAtuM gatastatra yatra tapyati so'suraH ॥ 35 ॥
Coming to a definite conclusion with adequate thought as to the reason for the same, I went where the demon was performing penance in order to grant him the boon.

अवोचं वचनं तं वै वरं ब्रूहीत्यहं मुने ॥ तपस्तप्तं त्वया तीव्रं नादेयं विद्यते तव ॥ ३६ ॥
avocaM vacanaM taM vai varaM brUhItyahaM mune ॥ tapastaptaM tvayA tIvraM nAdeyaM vidyate tava ॥ 36 ॥
O sage, I told him thus—“Tell me what boon you want. A severe penance has been performed by you. There is nothing which cannot be granted to you”.

इत्येवं मद्वचः श्रुत्वा तारकस्स महासुरः ॥ मां प्रणम्य सुसंस्तूय वरं वव्रेऽतिदारुणम् ॥ ३७ ॥
ityevaM madvacaH zrutvA tArakassa mahAsuraH ॥ mAM praNamya susaMstUya varaM vavre'tidAruNam ॥ 37 ॥
On hearing these words of mine, Tāraka, the great demon, bowed and eulogised me and requested for a terrible boon.

तारक उवाच ॥ त्वयि प्रसन्ने वरदे किमसाध्यं भवेन्मम ॥ अतो याचे वरं त्वत्तः शृणु तन्मे पितामह ॥ ३८ ॥
tAraka uvAca ॥ tvayi prasanne varade kimasAdhyaM bhavenmama ॥ ato yAce varaM tvattaH zRNu tanme pitAmaha ॥ 38 ॥
Tāraka said: O Pitāmaha, if you are glad and ready to grant me the boon what is it that cannot be achieved by me? Hence I request you for this boon. Please listen.

यदि प्रसन्नो देवेश यदि देयो वरो मम ॥ देयं वरद्वयं मह्यं कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि ॥३९॥
yadi prasanno deveza yadi deyo varo mama ॥ deyaM varadvayaM mahyaM kRpAM kRtvA mamopari ॥39॥
O lord of gods, if you are pleased and if a boon is to be given to me, be kind enough to grant me two boons.

त्वया च निर्मिते लोके सकलेऽस्मिन्महाप्रभो ॥ मत्तुल्यो बलवान्नूनं न भवेत्कोऽपि वै पुमान् ॥ 2-3-15-४० ॥
tvayA ca nirmite loke sakale'sminmahAprabho ॥ mattulyo balavAnnUnaM na bhavetko'pi vai pumAn ॥ 2-3-15-40 ॥
O great lord, there should certainly be no man equal to me in strength in this entire universe created by you.

शिववीर्यसमुत्पन्नः पुत्रस्सेनापतिर्यदा ॥ भूत्वा शस्त्रं क्षिपेन्मह्यं तदा मे मरणं भवेत् ॥ ४१ ॥
zivavIryasamutpannaH putrassenApatiryadA ॥ bhUtvA zastraM kSipenmahyaM tadA me maraNaM bhavet ॥ 41 ॥
If a son born of Śiva becomes the commander-inchief of an army and discharges weapons against me, let my death occur then.

ityukto'tha tadA tena daityenAhaM munIzvara॥ varaM ca tAdRzaM dattvA svalokamagamaM drutam॥42॥
O excellent sage, thus requested by that demon, I granted him two boons and hastened back to my abode.

Securing the excellent boon in accordance with his cherished desire, the demon was very glad and went to the town Śoṇita.

That great demon was crowned the king of the three worlds with the permission of Śukra, the preceptor of the demons.

Then the great demon became the leader of the three worlds. He inaugurated his commanding position by harassing the mobile and immobile beings.

rAjyaM cakAra vidhivastrilokasya sa tArakaH ॥ prajAzca pAlayAmAsa pIDayannirjarAdikAn॥46॥
He duly established his suzerainty over the three worlds. He protected his subjects but inflicted pain on the gods and others.

Then the demon Tāraka seized gems and jewels of all the guardians of the quarters, Indra and others, offered under duress by them on being afraid of him.

iMdreNairAvatastasya bhayAttasmai samarpitaH ॥ kubereNa tadA dattA nidhayo navasaMkhyakA ॥48॥
Afraid of him, Indra surrendered his Airāvata (white elephant) and Kubera all his nine treasures.

varuNena hayAH zubhrA RSibhiH kAmakRttathA ॥ sUryeNoccaizzravA divyo bhayAttasmai samarpitaH ॥49॥
White horses were surrendered by Varuṇa, the wish-yielding cow Kāmadhenu by the sages, and the sun out of fear for him surrendered his divine horse Uccaiḥśravas.

yatra yatra zubhaM vastu dRSTaM tenAsureNa hi॥ tattadgRhItaM tarasA nissArastribhavo'bhavat ॥2-3-15-50॥
Wherever a fine article was espied by the demon, he seized it immediately. The three worlds became void of all valuable things.

samudrAzca tathA ratnAnyadustasmai bhayAnmune॥ akRSTapacyAsItpRthvI prajAH kAmadughAH khilAH॥51॥
O sage, the oceans the offered him their gems on account of fear. The entire earth became exuberant in productivity without being tilled and yielded what his subjects desired.

sUryazca tapate tadvattadduHkhaM na yathA bhavet ॥ caMdrastu prabhayA dRzyo vAyussarvAnukUlavAn ॥52॥
The sun glowed gently and mildly as not to make him distressed. The moon was always visible with his brilliant light and the wind blew always favouring him.

devAnAM caiva yaddravyaM pitRRNAM ca parasya ca ॥ tatsarvaM samupAdattamasureNa durAtmanA ॥ 53 ॥
Whatever riches the gods possessed or the manes or others had, were forfeited by the wicked demon.

vazIkRtya sa lokAMstrInsvayamiMdro babhUva ha ॥ advitIyaH prabhuzcAsIdrAjyaM cakre'dbhutaM vazI॥54॥
Bringing the three worlds under his control, he declared Indra himself. He became the undisputed lord and ruled over them with perfect self-control.

Dismissing the gods he installed demons in their places. Some gods he engaged in his personal service.

O sage, the gods harassed by him, led by Indra, sought refuge in me. They were helpless and extremely agitated.
