॥ nArada uvAca ॥ viSNuziSya mahAzaiva samyaguktaM tvayA vidhe ॥ caritaM paramaM hyetacchivAyAzca zivasya ca ॥ 1 ॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, great devotee of Śiva and disciple of Viṣṇu, this great story of Śivā and Śiva has been narrated very well by you.

kastArakAsuro brahmanyena devAH prapIDitAH ॥ kasya putrasya vai brUhi tatkathAM ca zivAzrayAm ॥ 2 ॥
Who was this Tāraka demon, O Brahmā, by whom the gods were harassed. Whose son was he? Narrate his story with reference to Śiva.

bhasmI cakAra sa kathaM zaMkarazca smaraM vazI ॥ tadapi brUhi suprItyAdbhutaM taccaritaM vibhoH ॥ 3 ॥
How did Śiva of full control reduce Kāma to ashes? Please narrate that too with pleasure. The story of the lord is indeed wonderful.

How did Śivā perform the severe penance for the sake of happiness? How did the primordial energy who is greater than the universe secure Śiva as her husband?

O great scholar, narrate all these complete in every detail to me, your son, who has dedicated his soul to Śiva and who has developed full faith in Him.

brahmovAca ॥ putravarya mahAprAjJa surarSe zaMsitavrataH ॥ vacmyahaM zaMkaraM smRtvA sarvaM taccaritaM zRNu ॥ 6 ॥
Brahmā said: O celestial sage, of great intellect, O foremost of my sons, whose sacred rites are laudable, I explain the entire story after thinking on Śiva. Listen.

प्रथमं तारकस्यैव भवं संशृणु नारद॥ यद्वधार्थं महा यत्नः कृतो दैवैश्शिवाश्रयैः॥७॥
prathamaM tArakasyaiva bhavaM saMzRNu nArada॥ yadvadhArthaM mahA yatnaH kRto daivaizzivAzrayaiH॥7॥
O Nārada, first of all, you hear the birth of Tāraka himself, to secure whose death great effort was made by the gods depending on Śiva.

mama putro marIciryaH kazyapastasya cAtmajaH॥ trayodazamitAstasya striyo dakSasutAzca yAH॥8॥
My son Marīci begot Kaśyapa who married thirteen daughters of Dakṣa.

ditirjyeSThA ca tatstrI hi suSuve sA sutadvayam॥ hiraNyakazipurjyeSTho hiraNyAkSo'nujastataH॥9॥
The eldest of them Diti bore two sons: Hiraṇyakaśipu the elder and Hiraṇyākṣa the younger.

तौ हतौ विष्णुना दैत्यौ नृसिंहक्रोडरूपतः॥ सुदुःखदौ ततो देवाः सुखमापुश्च निर्भयाः॥ 2-3-14-१०॥
tau hatau viSNunA daityau nRsiMhakroDarUpataH॥ suduHkhadau tato devAH sukhamApuzca nirbhayAH॥ 2-3-14-10॥
When these two began to harass the gods, Viṣṇu assumed the forms of Man-lion and Boar and killed them. Then the gods became fearless and happy.

दितिश्च दुःखितासीत्सा कश्यपं शरणं गता॥ पुनस्संसेव्य तं भक्त्या गर्भमाधत्त सुव्रता ॥ ११॥
ditizca duHkhitAsItsA kazyapaM zaraNaM gatA॥ punassaMsevya taM bhaktyA garbhamAdhatta suvratA ॥ 11॥
The distressed Diti sought refuge in Kaśyapa and and serving him with devotion and observing the sacred rites she conceived.

तद्विज्ञाय महेंद्रोऽपि लब्धच्छिद्रो महोद्यमी॥ तद्गर्भं व्यच्छिनत्तत्र प्रविश्य पविना मुहुः॥१२॥।
tadvijJAya maheMdro'pi labdhacchidro mahodyamI॥ tadgarbhaM vyacchinattatra pravizya pavinA muhuH॥12॥।
On coming to know of it, Indra entered her womb forcibly and cut it off many a time with his thunderbolt.

तद्व्रतस्य प्रभावेण न तद्गर्भो ममार ह॥ स्वपंत्या दैवयोगेन सप्त सप्ताभवन्सुताः॥ १३॥
tadvratasya prabhAveNa na tadgarbho mamAra ha॥ svapaMtyA daivayogena sapta saptAbhavansutAH॥ 13॥
By the power of her sacred rites, the child in the womb did not die as she was sleeping at that time, by a stroke of good luck. They were cut into seven pieces and so she had seven sons.

देवा आसन्सुतास्ते च नामतो मरुतोऽखिलाः ॥ स्वर्गं ययुस्तदेन्द्रेण देवराजात्मसात्कृताः ॥ १४॥
devA AsansutAste ca nAmato maruto'khilAH ॥ svargaM yayustadendreNa devarAjAtmasAtkRtAH ॥ 14॥
These sons became gods by the name of Maruts. They all went to heaven along with Indra and were taken as his own attendants by the king of gods.

पुनर्दितिः पतिं भेजेऽनुतप्ता निजकर्मतः ॥ चकार सुप्रसन्नं तं मुनिं परमसेवया ऽ १५ ॥
punarditiH patiM bheje'nutaptA nijakarmataH ॥ cakAra suprasannaM taM muniM paramasevayA ' 15 ॥
Diti resorted again to her husband repenting for her action. She made the sage pleased by means of great service.

॥ कश्यप उवाच ॥ तपः कुरु शुचिर्भूत्वा ब्रह्मणश्चायुतं समाः ॥ चेद्भविष्यति तत्पूर्वं भविता ते सुतस्तदा ॥ १६ ॥
॥ kazyapa uvAca ॥ tapaH kuru zucirbhUtvA brahmaNazcAyutaM samAH ॥ cedbhaviSyati tatpUrvaM bhavitA te sutastadA ॥ 16 ॥
Kaśyapa said: Be pure and perform penance for ten thousand years of Brahmā. When it is completed you will have a son.

तथा दित्या कृतं पूर्णं तत्तपश्श्रद्धया मुने॥ ततः पत्युः प्राप्य गर्भं सुषुवे तादृशं सुतम् ॥ १७ ॥
tathA dityA kRtaM pUrNaM tattapazzraddhayA mune॥ tataH patyuH prApya garbhaM suSuve tAdRzaM sutam ॥ 17 ॥
Brahmā said: O sage, the penance was completed by Diti who performed it with faith. Thereafter from him she conceived and delivered of a son.

वजांगनामा सोऽभूद्वै दितिपुत्रोऽमरोपमः ॥ नामतुल्यतनुर्वीरस्सुप्रताप्युद्भवाद्बली ॥ १८ ॥
vajAMganAmA so'bhUdvai ditiputro'maropamaH ॥ nAmatulyatanurvIrassupratApyudbhavAdbalI ॥ 18 ॥
That son of Diti named Vajrāṅga (of adamantine limbs) was on a par with the gods. Befitting his name, his body was strong and powerful even from his very birth.

जननीशासनात्सद्यस्स सुतो निर्जराधिपम् ॥ बलाद्धृत्वा ददौ दंडं विविधं निर्जरानपि ॥ १९॥
jananIzAsanAtsadyassa suto nirjarAdhipam ॥ balAddhRtvA dadau daMDaM vividhaM nirjarAnapi ॥ 19॥
At the bidding of his mother, he immediately abducted Indra, the lord of gods, the other gods and punished them in various ways.

दितिस्सुखमतीवाप दृष्ट्वा शक्रादिदुर्दशाम्॥ अमरा अपि शक्राद्या जग्मुर्दुःखं स्वकर्मतः ॥ 2-3-14-२० ॥
ditissukhamatIvApa dRSTvA zakrAdidurdazAm॥ amarA api zakrAdyA jagmurduHkhaM svakarmataH ॥ 2-3-14-20 ॥
Seeing the distress of Indra and others, Diti became very happy. Indra and other gods became miserable due to their own actions.

तदाहं कश्यपेनाशु तत्रागत्य सुसामगीः॥ देवानत्याजयंस्तस्मात्सदा देवहिते रतः॥२१॥
tadAhaM kazyapenAzu tatrAgatya susAmagIH॥ devAnatyAjayaMstasmAtsadA devahite rataH॥21॥
Always engaged in the welfare of the gods, I went there accompanied by Kaśyapa. Employing gentle and peaceful words I got the gods released.

देवान्मुक्त्वा स वज्रांगस्ततः प्रोवाच सादरम् ॥ शिवभक्तोऽतिशुद्धात्मा निर्विकारः प्रसन्नधीः ॥२२॥
devAnmuktvA sa vajrAMgastataH provAca sAdaram ॥ zivabhakto'tizuddhAtmA nirvikAraH prasannadhIH ॥22॥
Releasing the gods with respect, Vajrāṅga, a great devotee of Śiva, was delighted in his heart, and he of pure soul, without any aberration, spoke.

॥ वज्रांग उवाच॥ इंद्रो दुष्टः प्रजाघाती मातुर्मे स्वार्थसाधकः ॥ स फलं प्राप्तवानद्य स्वराज्यं हि करोतु सः ॥ २३ ॥
॥ vajrAMga uvAca॥ iMdro duSTaH prajAghAtI mAturme svArthasAdhakaH ॥ sa phalaM prAptavAnadya svarAjyaM hi karotu saH ॥ 23 ॥
Vajrāṅga said: In order to achieve his interest, Indra killed the foetus of my mother. He has now tasted the fruit thereof. Well may he rule over his kingdom.

मातुराज्ञावशाद्ब्रह्मन्कृतमेतन्मयाखिलम् ॥ न मे भोगाभिलाषो वै कस्यचि द्भुवनस्य हि ॥ २४ ॥
mAturAjJAvazAdbrahmankRtametanmayAkhilam ॥ na me bhogAbhilASo vai kasyaci dbhuvanasya hi ॥ 24 ॥
O Brahmā, I did this only at the bidding of my mother. I have no desire for the enjoyments of any one of the worlds.

तत्त्वसारं विधे सूत मह्यं वेदविदाम्वर ॥ येन स्यां सुसुखी नित्यं निर्विकारः प्रसन्नधीः ॥ २५ ॥
tattvasAraM vidhe sUta mahyaM vedavidAmvara ॥ yena syAM susukhI nityaM nirvikAraH prasannadhIH ॥ 25 ॥
O Brahmā, foremost of those who know the Vedas, tell me the essence of real philosophy whereby I can ever remain happy, pleased in heart and free from aberrations.

तच्छ्रुत्वाहं मुनेऽवोचं सात्त्विको भाव उच्यत ॥ तत्त्वसार इति प्रीत्या सृजाम्येकां वरां स्त्रियम् ॥ २६ ॥
tacchrutvAhaM mune'vocaM sAttviko bhAva ucyata ॥ tattvasAra iti prItyA sRjAmyekAM varAM striyam ॥ 26 ॥
On hearing that, O sage, I said—“Sāttvika feelings constitute the essence of real philosophy. I shall lovingly create an exquisite lady.”

वरांगीं नाम तां दत्त्वा तस्मै दितिसुताय वै ॥ अयां स्वधाम सुप्रीतः कश्यपस्तत्पितापि च ॥२७॥
varAMgIM nAma tAM dattvA tasmai ditisutAya vai ॥ ayAM svadhAma suprItaH kazyapastatpitApi ca ॥27॥
After offering her who was named Varāṅgī, to that son of Diti, I went to my abode in great delight. So also Kaśyapa, his father.

ततो दैत्यस्य वज्रांगस्सात्विकं भावमाश्रितः॥ आसुरं भावमुत्सृज्य निर्वैरस्सुखमाप्तवान्॥२८॥
tato daityasya vajrAMgassAtvikaM bhAvamAzritaH॥ AsuraM bhAvamutsRjya nirvairassukhamAptavAn॥28॥
Thereafter the demon eschewed his diabolical feelings and resorted to sublime thoughts. Since he was free from fiendish feelings he became happy.

न बभूव वरांग्या हि हृदि भावोथ सात्विकः॥ सकामा स्वपतिं भेजे श्रद्धया विविधं सती ॥२९॥
na babhUva varAMgyA hi hRdi bhAvotha sAtvikaH॥ sakAmA svapatiM bheje zraddhayA vividhaM satI ॥29॥
But no sublime feeling entered in the heart of Varāṅgī. With chastity and faith she served her husband lovingly in diverse ways.

अथ तत्सेवनादाशु संतुष्टोऽभून्महाप्रभुः ॥ स वज्रांगः पतिस्तस्या उवाच वचनं तदा ॥2-3-14-३०॥
atha tatsevanAdAzu saMtuSTo'bhUnmahAprabhuH ॥ sa vajrAMgaH patistasyA uvAca vacanaM tadA ॥2-3-14-30॥
Her husband Vajrāṅga of great lordly status was glad very soon on account of her service. He then spoke thus:

वज्रांग उवाच॥ किमिच्छसि प्रिये ब्रूहि किं ते मनसि वर्तते ॥ तच्छुत्वानम्य तं प्राह सा पतिं स्वमनोरथम् ॥ ३१ ॥
vajrAMga uvAca॥ kimicchasi priye brUhi kiM te manasi vartate ॥ tacchutvAnamya taM prAha sA patiM svamanoratham ॥ 31 ॥
Vajrāṅga said: O beloved, what do you wish? What is it that you cherish in your mind? On hearing that, she bowed to her husband and revealed her desire.

वरांग्युवाच ॥ चेत् प्रसन्नोऽभवस्त्वं वै सुतं मे देहि सत्पते ॥ महाबलं त्रिलोकस्य जेतारं हरिदुःखदम् ॥ ३२ ॥
varAMgyuvAca ॥ cet prasanno'bhavastvaM vai sutaM me dehi satpate ॥ mahAbalaM trilokasya jetAraM hariduHkhadam ॥ 32 ॥
Varāṅgī said: O my good husband, if you are so pleased grant me a powerful son who will conquer three worlds and cause misery to Viṣṇu.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इति श्रुत्वा प्रियावाक्यं विस्मितोऽभूत्स आकुलः॥ उवाच हृदि स ज्ञानी सात्विको वैरवर्जितः ॥३३॥
brahmovAca ॥ iti zrutvA priyAvAkyaM vismito'bhUtsa AkulaH॥ uvAca hRdi sa jJAnI sAtviko vairavarjitaH ॥33॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of his beloved, he was disagreeably surprised and vexed. He was free from inimical thoughts. With perfect wisdom and Sāttvika feelings in his heart he said:

प्रियेच्छति विरोधं वै सुरैर्मे न हि रोचते ॥ किं कुर्यां हि क्व गच्छेयं कथं नश्ये न मे पणः ॥ ३४ ॥
priyecchati virodhaM vai surairme na hi rocate ॥ kiM kuryAM hi kva gaccheyaM kathaM nazye na me paNaH ॥ 34 ॥
My beloved wishes enmity with the gods. It does not appeal to me. What shall I do? Where shall I go? How can my vow be preserved from destruction?

प्रियामनोरथश्चैव पूर्णस्स्यात्त्रिजगद्भवेत् ॥ क्लेशयुङ्नितरा भूयो देवाश्च मुनयस्तथा ॥ ३५ ॥
priyAmanorathazcaiva pUrNassyAttrijagadbhavet ॥ klezayuGnitarA bhUyo devAzca munayastathA ॥ 35 ॥
If my wife’s wishes are fulfilled, the three worlds will be much distressed, so too the gods and the sages.

न पूर्णस्स्यात्प्रियाकामस्तदा मे नरको भवेत्॥ द्विधापि धर्महानिर्वै भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुवान् ॥३६॥
na pUrNassyAtpriyAkAmastadA me narako bhavet॥ dvidhApi dharmahAnirvai bhavatItyanuzuzruvAn ॥36॥
If my beloved’s desires are not fulfilled, I am sure to be cast into hell. In either case righteousness will be lost. This is what we have heard.

वज्रांग इत्थं बभ्राम स मुने धर्मसंकटे ॥ बलाबलं द्वयोस्तत्र विचिचिंत च बुद्धितः ॥ ३७ ॥
vajrAMga itthaM babhrAma sa mune dharmasaMkaTe ॥ balAbalaM dvayostatra viciciMta ca buddhitaH ॥ 37 ॥
O sage, thus Vajrāṅga whirled a lot in a dilemma. Intelligently he considered the corresponding strength and weakness of both the alternatives.

शिवेच्छया स हि मुने वाक्यं मेने स्त्रियो बुधः ॥ तथास्त्विति वचः प्राह प्रियां प्रति स दैत्यराट् ॥३८॥
zivecchayA sa hi mune vAkyaM mene striyo budhaH ॥ tathAstviti vacaH prAha priyAM prati sa daityarAT ॥38॥
O sage, as willed by Śiva, though intelligent the king of demons agreed to the proposal. He told his wife “So be it.”

तदर्थमकरोत्तीव्रं तपोन्यद्दुष्करं स तु ॥ मां समुद्दिश्य सुप्रीत्या बहुवर्षं जितेंद्रियः ॥३९॥
tadarthamakarottIvraM taponyadduSkaraM sa tu ॥ mAM samuddizya suprItyA bahuvarSaM jiteMdriyaH ॥39॥
For that purpose he performed another very difficult penance with great zeal with me as the object of worship, for number of years.

वरं दातुमगां तस्मै दृष्ट्वाहं तत्तपो महत् ॥ वरं ब्रूहि ह्यवोचं तं सुप्रसन्नेन चेतसा ॥ 2-3-14-४० ॥
varaM dAtumagAM tasmai dRSTvAhaM tattapo mahat ॥ varaM brUhi hyavocaM taM suprasannena cetasA ॥ 2-3-14-40 ॥
On seeing the great penance I went to him for granting the boon. With a delighted mind I told him “speak out the boon you wish to have.

वज्रांगस्तु तदा प्रीतं मां दृष्ट्वा स्थितं विभुम् ॥ सुप्रणम्य बहुस्तुत्वा वरं वव्रे प्रियाहितम् ॥ ४१ ॥
vajrAMgastu tadA prItaM mAM dRSTvA sthitaM vibhum ॥ supraNamya bahustutvA varaM vavre priyAhitam ॥ 41 ॥
On seeing me in the firmament in the pleasant mood he worshipped and eulogised me as well as craved for the boon as desired by his wife.

वज्रांग उवाच॥ सुतं देहि स्वमातुर्मे महाहितकरं प्रभो ॥ महाबलं सुप्रतापं सुसमर्थं तपोनिधिम् ॥४२॥
vajrAMga uvAca॥ sutaM dehi svamAturme mahAhitakaraM prabho ॥ mahAbalaM supratApaM susamarthaM taponidhim ॥42॥
Vajrāṅga said: O lord, give me a son who will be carrying out what is beneficent to his mother, who will be strong, valorous and efficient, who will be a storehouse of penance.

ब्रह्मोवाच॥ इत्याकर्ण्य च तद्वाक्यं तथास्त्वित्यब्रवं मुने ॥ अया स्वधाम तद्दत्त्वा विमनास्सस्मरच्छिवम् ॥४३॥
brahmovAca॥ ityAkarNya ca tadvAkyaM tathAstvityabravaM mune ॥ ayA svadhAma taddattvA vimanAssasmaracchivam ॥43॥
Brahmā said: On hearing his words, O sage, I said “So be it.” After granting the boon I returned to my abode thinking on Śiva, though a bit distressed.
