Brahmā said: Then, the delighted lord of the mountains, took some fresh flowers and fruits with him and approached Śiva along with his daughter.

sa gatvA trijagannAthaM praNamya dhyAnatatparam॥ arthayAmAsa tanayAM kAlIM tasmai hRdAdbhutAm ॥2॥
Approaching the lord of the three worlds, engaged in meditation and bowing to Him he mentally dedicated to Him, his wonderful daughter.

phalapuSpAdikaM sarvaM tattadagre nidhAya saH ॥ agre kRtvA sutAM zambhumidamAha ca zailarAT ॥3॥
Placing the fruits and flowers in front of Him and making his daughter stand before Him, the lord of the mountains spoke to Śiva.

himagiriruvAca॥ bhagavaMstanayA me tvAM sevituM candrazekharam ॥ samutsukA samAnItA tvadArAdhanakAMkSayA ॥4॥
Himācala said: O lord, my daughter who is eager to serve you, the moon-crested lord, I have brought here with a desire to propitiate you.

sakhIbhyAM saha nityaM tvAM sevatAmeva zaMkaram ॥ anujAnIhi tAM nAtha mayi te yadyanugrahaH ॥5॥
Let her serve you, the benefactor, for ever, along with two of her maids. O lord, if you wish to bless me, please permit her.

brahmovAca ॥ atha tAM zaMkaro'pazyatprathamArUDhayauvanAm ॥ phullendIvarapatrAbhA pUrNacandranibhAnanAm ॥ 6 ॥
Brahmā said: Then Śiva looked at her in the first flush of her youth. Her complexion resembled the full blown blue lotus petals. Her face appeared as the full moon.

samastalIlAsaMsthAnazubhaveSavijRmbhikAm ॥ kambugrIvAM vizAlAkSIM cArukarNayugojjvalAm ॥7॥
Her auspicious dress and features were the repositories of all graceful charms. Her neck had the shape of the conch-shell. Her eyes were wide and her ears shone exquisitely.

मृणालायतपर्य्यन्तबाहुयुग्ममनोहराम्॥ राजीवकुड्मलप्रख्यौ घनपीनौदृढौस्तनौ ॥ ८ ॥
mRNAlAyataparyyantabAhuyugmamanoharAm॥ rAjIvakuDmalaprakhyau ghanapInaudRDhaustanau ॥ 8 ॥
On either side, her long-rounded arms resembling a lotus-stalk shone beautifully. Her two breasts resembling lotus-buds were stout, plump and firm. Her waist was slender and the curly locks of her hair shone well.

बिभ्रतीं क्षीणमध्यां च त्रिवलीमध्यराजिताम् ॥ स्थलपद्मप्रतीकाशपादयुग्मविराजिताम् ॥ ९ ॥
bibhratIM kSINamadhyAM ca trivalImadhyarAjitAm ॥ sthalapadmapratIkAzapAdayugmavirAjitAm ॥ 9 ॥
. Her waist was slender and the curly locks of her hair shone well. Her feet resembled the land-lotus and were comely in appearance.

ध्यानपंजरनिर्बद्धमुनिमानसमप्यलम् ॥ दर्शनाद्भ्रंशने शक्तां योषिद्गणशिरोमणिम् ॥ 2-3-12-१० ॥
dhyAnapaMjaranirbaddhamunimAnasamapyalam ॥ darzanAdbhraMzane zaktAM yoSidgaNaziromaNim ॥ 2-3-12-10 ॥
She was competent to shake the minds of even the sages deeply engrossed in meditation, even at the very sight. She was a crest-jewel of all the maidens in the world.

दृष्ट्वा तां तादृशीं तात ध्यानिनां च मनोहराम् ॥ विग्रहे तन्त्रमन्त्राणां वर्द्धिनीं कामरूपिणीम् ॥ ११ ॥
dRSTvA tAM tAdRzIM tAta dhyAninAM ca manoharAm ॥ vigrahe tantramantrANAM varddhinIM kAmarUpiNIm ॥ 11 ॥
Seeing her, O father, so enchanting in form and mind-captivating, she was the very embodiment of power and mantras, and the supreme goddess of desire, capable of fulfilling all desires in her divine form.

न्यमीलयदृशौ शीघ्रं दध्यौ स्वं रूपमुत्तमम् ॥ परतत्त्वं महायोगी त्रिगुणात्परमव्ययम् ॥ १२ ॥
nyamIlayadRzau zIghraM dadhyau svaM rUpamuttamam ॥ paratattvaM mahAyogI triguNAtparamavyayam ॥ 12 ॥
Quickly, the great yogi closed his eyes, meditated, and then perceived his highest form, the supreme essence, transcending the three gunas (modes of nature), and beyond the material existence.

दृष्ट्वा तदानीं सकलेश्वरं विभुं तपोजुषाणं विनिमीलितेक्षणम्॥ कपर्दिनं चन्द्रकलाविभूषणं वेदान्तवेद्यं परमासने स्थितम् ॥ १३ ॥
dRSTvA tadAnIM sakalezvaraM vibhuM tapojuSANaM vinimIlitekSaNam॥ kapardinaM candrakalAvibhUSaNaM vedAntavedyaM paramAsane sthitam ॥ 13 ॥
On seeing Śiva the lord of all, the chief of those devoted to penance, the lord with the moon as his ornament, who can be known through spiritual insight and who was sitting in the meditative posture closing His eyes, Himācala saluted Him again.

ववन्द शीर्ष्णा च पुनर्हिमाचलः स संशयं प्रापददीनसत्त्वः ॥ उवाच वाक्यं जगदेकबन्धुं गिरीश्वरो वाक्यविदां वरिष्ठः ॥ १४ ॥
vavanda zIrSNA ca punarhimAcalaH sa saMzayaM prApadadInasattvaH ॥ uvAca vAkyaM jagadekabandhuM girIzvaro vAkyavidAM variSThaH ॥ 14 ॥
Though he was not disheartened, he entertained some doubts. Thus he, the lord of mountains, foremost of the eloqueut, spoke to Śiva, the sole kinsman of the universe.

हिमाचल उवाच ॥ देवदेव महादेव करुणाकर शंकर ॥ पश्य मां शरणम्प्राप्तमुन्मील्य नयने विभो ॥ १५ ॥
himAcala uvAca ॥ devadeva mahAdeva karuNAkara zaMkara ॥ pazya mAM zaraNamprAptamunmIlya nayane vibho ॥ 15 ॥
Himācala said: O great lord of the gods, O Śiva, the merciful, O lord, open your eyes and look at me who have sought refuge in you.

शिव शर्व महेशान जगदानन्दकृत्प्रभो ॥ त्वां नतोऽहं महादेव सर्वापद्विनिवर्तकम् ॥ १६ ॥
ziva zarva mahezAna jagadAnandakRtprabho ॥ tvAM nato'haM mahAdeva sarvApadvinivartakam ॥ 16 ॥
O Śiva, O great lord, the delighter ofthe universe, O great God, I bow to you who destroy all adversities.

न त्वां जानंति देवेश वेदाश्शास्त्राणि कृत्स्नशः॥ अतीतो महिमाध्वानं तव वाङ्मनसोः सदा ॥१७॥
na tvAM jAnaMti deveza vedAzzAstrANi kRtsnazaH॥ atIto mahimAdhvAnaM tava vAGmanasoH sadA ॥17॥
O lord of gods, the Vedas and the sacred lore do not know you entirely. Your greatness is beyond the sphere of words and minds, inexpressible by means of words and incomprehensible.

अतद्व्यावृत्तितस्त्वां वै चकितं चकितं सदा ॥ अभिधत्ते श्रुतिः सर्वा परेषां का कथा मता ॥१८॥
atadvyAvRttitastvAM vai cakitaM cakitaM sadA ॥ abhidhatte zrutiH sarvA pareSAM kA kathA matA ॥18॥
Not to speak of others, even the Vedas describe you with awe and timidity not positively but negating what you are not.

जानंति बहवो भक्तास्त्वत्कृपां प्राप्य भक्तितः ॥ शरणागत भक्तानां न कुत्रापि भ्रमादिकम् ॥१९॥
jAnaMti bahavo bhaktAstvatkRpAM prApya bhaktitaH ॥ zaraNAgata bhaktAnAM na kutrApi bhramAdikam ॥19॥
Securing your grace through devotion, many devotees become acquainted with you. Seeking refuge in you they get correct knowledge about your real self.

विज्ञप्तिं शृणु मत्प्रीत्या स्वदासस्य ममाधुना॥ तव देवाज्ञया तात दीनत्वाद्वर्णयामि हि ॥ 2-3-12-२० ॥
vijJaptiM zRNu matprItyA svadAsasya mamAdhunA॥ tava devAjJayA tAta dInatvAdvarNayAmi hi ॥ 2-3-12-20 ॥
Please listen to my entreaty with a long heart. I am your slave. O dear lord, in humility I shall explain the same to you.

सभाग्योहं महादेव प्रसादात्तव शंकर ॥ मत्वा स्वदासं मां नाथ कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ २१ ॥
sabhAgyohaM mahAdeva prasAdAttava zaMkara ॥ matvA svadAsaM mAM nAtha kRpAM kuru namo'stu te ॥ 21 ॥
O great god Śiva, by your favour I feel most fortunate. O lord, consider me your slave and be sympathetic towards me. Obeisance to you.

प्रत्यहं चागमिष्यामि दर्शनार्थं तव प्रभो॥ अनया सुतया स्वामिन्निदेशं दातुमर्हसि ॥२२॥
pratyahaM cAgamiSyAmi darzanArthaM tava prabho॥ anayA sutayA svAminnidezaM dAtumarhasi ॥22॥
O lord, I shall be visiting you daily along with my daughter. O lord, be pleased to command me accordingly.

brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacastasyonmIlya netre mahezvaraH ॥ tyaktadhyAnaH parAmRzya devadevo'bravIdvacaH ॥23॥
Brahmā said: On hearing his words, the great lord of the gods broke His meditation, opened His eyes, thought a little and spoke.

॥ महेश्वर उवाच ॥ आगंतव्यं त्वया नित्यं दर्शनार्थं ममाचल॥ कुमारीं सदने स्थाप्य नान्यथा मम दर्शनम् ॥ २४ ॥
॥ mahezvara uvAca ॥ AgaMtavyaM tvayA nityaM darzanArthaM mamAcala॥ kumArIM sadane sthApya nAnyathA mama darzanam ॥ 24 ॥
Lord Śiva said: O mountain, you shall come every day to see me, leaving your daughter in your abode. Otherwise I cannot be seen.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ mahezavacanaM zrutvA zivAtAtastathAvidham ॥ acalaH pratyuvAcedaM girizaM natakamadharaH ॥ 25 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of Śiva in that view, the father of Śivā the mountain, bowed his head and replied to Śiva.

हिमाचल उवाच ॥ कस्मान्मयानया सार्द्धं नागंतव्यं तदुच्यताम् ॥ सेवने किमयोग्येयं नाहं वेद्म्यत्र कारणम् ॥ २६ ॥
himAcala uvAca ॥ kasmAnmayAnayA sArddhaM nAgaMtavyaM taducyatAm ॥ sevane kimayogyeyaM nAhaM vedmyatra kAraNam ॥ 26 ॥
Himācala said: Let this be kindly mentioned why this girl cannot accompany me here. Is she unworthy of your service? I do not know the reason thereof.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ ततोऽब्रवीद्गिरिं शंभुः प्रहसन्वृषभध्वजः ॥ लोकाचारं विशेषेण दर्शयन्हि कुयोगिनाम् ॥ २७ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ tato'bravIdgiriM zaMbhuH prahasanvRSabhadhvajaH ॥ lokAcAraM vizeSeNa darzayanhi kuyoginAm ॥ 27 ॥
Brahmā said: Particularly pointing out the worldly conduct of fake ascetics, the bull-bannered god Śiva laughingly spoke to the mountain.

शंभुरुवाच ॥ इयं कुमारी सुश्रोणी तन्वी चन्द्रानना शुभा ॥ नानेतव्या मत्समीपे वारयामि पुनः पुनः ॥ २८ ॥
zaMbhuruvAca ॥ iyaM kumArI suzroNI tanvI candrAnanA zubhA ॥ nAnetavyA matsamIpe vArayAmi punaH punaH ॥ 28 ॥
Śiva said:This auspicious slender-bodied maiden of comely hips and moon-like face should not be brought near me. I forbid you again and again.

मायारूपा स्मृता नारी विद्वद्भिर्वेदपारगैः ॥ युवती तु विशेषेण विघ्नकर्त्री तपस्विनाम् ॥२९॥
mAyArUpA smRtA nArI vidvadbhirvedapAragaiH ॥ yuvatI tu vizeSeNa vighnakartrI tapasvinAm ॥29॥
A woman is a phase of illusion. As the scholars who have mastered the Vedas say particularly, a young damsel is a hindrance to ascetics.

अहं तपस्वी योगी च निर्लिप्तो मायया सदा ॥ प्रयोजनं न युक्त्या वै स्त्रिया किं मेस्ति भूधर ॥2-3-12-३० ॥
ahaM tapasvI yogI ca nirlipto mAyayA sadA ॥ prayojanaM na yuktyA vai striyA kiM mesti bhUdhara ॥2-3-12-30 ॥
O mountain, I am an ascetic, a yogin, never affected by illusion. Of what avail is a woman thrust on me?

एवं पुनर्न वक्तव्यं तपस्विवरसंश्रित ॥ वेदधर्मप्रवीणस्त्वं यतो ज्ञानिवरो बुधः ॥३१ ॥
evaM punarna vaktavyaM tapasvivarasaMzrita ॥ vedadharmapravINastvaM yato jJAnivaro budhaH ॥31 ॥
O friend resorted to by great ascetics, you shall not say so again, since you are an adept in Vedic religion, a scholar and one foremost among the wise.

भवत्यचल तत्संगाद्विषयोत्पत्तिराशु वै ॥ विनश्यति च वैराग्यं ततो भ्रश्यति सत्तपः ॥३२॥
bhavatyacala tatsaMgAdviSayotpattirAzu vai ॥ vinazyati ca vairAgyaM tato bhrazyati sattapaH ॥32॥
O mountain, by contact with a woman, worldliness springs up; non-attachment perishes and the virtuous penance is destroyed.

अतस्तपस्विना शैल न कार्या स्त्रीषु संगतिः ॥ महाविषयमूलं सा ज्ञानवैराग्यनाशिनी॥३३॥
atastapasvinA zaila na kAryA strISu saMgatiH ॥ mahAviSayamUlaM sA jJAnavairAgyanAzinI॥33॥
Hence, O mountain, no ascetic shall have any truck with women. A woman is the root of all worldly attachments. She destroys all wisdom and detachment together.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्याद्युक्त्वा बहुतरं महायोगी महेश्वरः ॥ । विरराम गिरीशं तं महायोगिवरः प्रभुः ॥ ३४ ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityAdyuktvA bahutaraM mahAyogI mahezvaraH ॥ । virarAma girIzaM taM mahAyogivaraH prabhuH ॥ 34 ॥
Brahmā said: Speaking these and many other similar things to the lord of mountains, lord Śiva the great Yogin, stopped.

एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य शंभोर्निरामयं निःस्पृहं निष्ठुरं च ॥ कालीतातश्चकितोऽभूत्सुरर्षे तद्वत्किंचिद्व्याकुलश्चास तूष्णीम् ॥ ३५ ॥
etacchrutvA vacanaM tasya zaMbhornirAmayaM niHspRhaM niSThuraM ca ॥ kAlItAtazcakito'bhUtsurarSe tadvatkiMcidvyAkulazcAsa tUSNIm ॥ 35 ॥
On hearing these ruthless words of Śiva free from sickness and desire, the father of Pārvatī became nervous, O celestial sage, and a little agitated. But he kept quiet.

तपस्विनोक्तं वचनं निशम्य तथा गिरीशं चकितं विचार्य्य ॥ अतः प्रणम्यैव शिवं भवानी जगाद वाक्यं विशदन्तदानीम् ॥३६॥
tapasvinoktaM vacanaM nizamya tathA girIzaM cakitaM vicAryya ॥ ataH praNamyaiva zivaM bhavAnI jagAda vAkyaM vizadantadAnIm ॥36॥
On hearing the words of the ascetic and finding her father, the lord of the mountains, frightened, Pārvatī bowed to Śiva and spoke these words clearly.
